How Obama Got 'Ahead of the Curve' on Same-Sex Marriage

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

When presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke last month with Advocate.com -- which describes itself as an "LGBT" (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) news site -- he took a different approach to same-sex marriage than he took in 2004, when he was running for the U.S. Senate.

"I'm a Christian," Obama said then, "and so although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."

This statement, reported at the time by The Associated Press, came in a Sept. 24, 2004, interview with WBBM-AM, a Chicago radio station.

In his interview with Advocate.com, published on April 10, Obama did not suggest Christian tradition was at the root of his own views on same-sex marriage, but he did suggest it was a root cause of "homophobia" -- as he criticized traditionalist African American Christian clergymen.

"There's plenty of homophobia to go around," the interviewer said to Obama, "but you have a unique perspective into the African-American community. Is there a (ellipses in original)"

"I don't think it's worse than in the white community," Obama responded. "I think that the difference has to do with the fact that the African-American community is more churched, and most African-American churches are still fairly traditional in their interpretations of Scripture. And so from the pulpit or in sermons you still hear homophobic attitudes expressed. And since African-American ministers are often the most prominent figures in the African-American community, those attitudes get magnified or amplified a little bit more than in other communities."

When asked about his favoring "civil unions" but not same-sex "marriages," Obama was quick to point out that he understood why the "LGBT" community wanted not only same-sex unions that were equal in law to marriage, but also the word "marriage," too.

"So, I strongly respect the right of same-sex couples to insist that even if we got complete equality in benefits, it still wouldn't be equal because there's a stigma associated with not having the same word, marriage, assigned to it," he said.

Despite his unwillingness to advocate the use of the word "marriage" to describe the legalized same-sex unions he says favors, Obama boasted that he is in the top 1 percent of American politicians in advancing the "LGBT" cause. "And I think that it is absolutely fair to ask me for leadership," he told Advocate.com, "and my argument would be that I'm ahead of the curve on these issues compared to 99 percent of most elected officials around the country on this issue."

Just how far ahead of the curve is he?

In The Advocate, he noted that "I for a very long time have been interested in repeal of DOMA," the Defense of Marriage Act. In a position paper, "On LGBT Rights," published by his campaign, it says Obama believes "we need to fully repeal the Defense of Marriage Act."

The practical effect of fully repealing DOMA would be to force all the other 48 states to recognize same-sex marriages contracted in Massachusetts and California, where the state supreme courts have now said same-sex marriage is a "right." That is because the main purpose of DOMA is to exempt states from having to recognize same-sex marriages contracted in other states as they would otherwise need to under the "Full Faith and Credit Clause" of the Constitution.

But there is good reason to believe Obama does not want the entire electorate to pay close attention to the predictable consequence of the policy he advocates. When the California Supreme Court issued its same-sex marriage ruling earlier this month, his campaign issued a statement suggesting that he respected the right of states to determine their own marriage laws.

"Barack Obama has always believed that same-sex couples should enjoy equal rights under the law, and he will continue to fight for civil unions as president," the statement said, according to The Associated Press. "He respects the decision of the California Supreme Court and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage."

If this statement is true, Obama needs to reverse his call for repealing DOMA, which he was touting to Advocate.com as recently as last month. If he does not reverse his call for repealing DOMA, his true position is that every state in the union should be forced to recognize same-sex marriages.

Poetic
justice for ellen degenerate to be married at a BUSH ranch....lmao...rofl

No surprise here.
Isn't this type of political
waffling typical of demagogues?
Any UNprincipled politician worth
his or her weight in pork should
have this type of backsliding down
to a science. He says what he has to
to get elected. Kind of like the big, bad wolf who first tried to FOOL the 3 little pigs into letting him in.

The only difference here is that the
pigs are all sheep who swoon at the
tone and delivery of a flowery speech. Sure the man is eloquent. But give me an INarticulate southern man with a good heart over a smooth Svengali with a dark heart anyday.

I do not kill. I do not support killing.

I feel the same as you, here.

I try not kill people's spirit, either.

If two people love one another, they should not be persecuted. Sex may not be paramount either.
Assuming sex is the reason two people always come together is presumptuous on our parts, isn't it? Its none of my business what joins two people in matrimony. I hope its LOVE.

I'll go back and read the post you suggest.

Dear Nellie,
I went back and reread every comment to see what you meant about expressing anger against your "beliefs, opinions, religious study and candidate". You are choosing to misinterpret, apparently. The only truly hostile and insulting comment comes from a fellow BO supporter, in favor of gay marriage.

I do hope you take the time to check the sites that Don (TX) mentioned. Perhaps you'll understand why the majority of commentors here understand that Obama's track record is so despicable.

He stands for, and fights for (except when he votes "Present") practices that are contrary to the Lord's teachings. To say that he "has better moral character than any politican in a very long time", especially in view of his stated beliefs and public track record is not based in fact. I prefer NOT to "give him a chance to bring his principles to our nation's highest office". I believe they are NOT good principles, and will continue the corruption of moral standards in this country.

You said, "We need not attempt to instruct the Lord. We need to understand His commandments. They are clear and simple. But we keep trying to alter them, through our own lack of understanding." How can you interpret "Thou shall not kill" as anything other than a commandment NOT TO KILL?

guys, those of you who express anger
toward my belief, opinion, religous study, candidate, etc. Do you at least appreciate that I am not seeking your agreement, support or debate?

I'm simply stating something to think about. That's all. I know my Bible, my instinct, my intelligence. You don't hear me ranting cuss words at you. That's because my feelings on these subjects are grounded in what I know to be true and accurate from my years of prayerful study.

For anyone to be attacking another for his 'free speech' thoughtful opinions for which you may ponder or not, is utterly rediculous.

My instincts are God directed. They are not going to be changed by ranting and fearful bloggers or article writers of the same hysterical nature. I weigh sources, just like you.

When I've read the websites you site, I'll come back with my views of them.

Votes
seems Ohio may again play a pivotal role in the November election. This state is not very happy about outsourcing and illegal immigrants in our midst. Even though we have a Democratic Governor, he is literally from the backwoods in Southeast Ohio, more of a Reagan Democrat so to speak. EXTREME leftist views usually are not tolerated by the masses here. If previous trends and history are an indicator, The Repubs will most likely carry Ohio, albeit a close vote for sure.

You are doing the very thing that you accuse others on this thread of doing ~ stereotyping and judging. In addition, you've added namecalling to the list. Calling us "IDIOTS" and our posts "stupidity" does not make you any more correct than you were before.

Voting for infanticide, as Obama has done consistently and repeatedly, goes against everything that Jesus Christ instructed us to do. In fact, he warned against infanticide specifically, in the New Testament. Maybe non-Christians don't care about anything that Jesus said, but BO claims to BE a Christian, which entails following the teachings of JESUS CHRIST.

If we do not stand up for Christian principles, and exhort our brethren when they wander into the pathways of sin, we will be held accountable.

This nation has been blessed through the years, but as more people turn away from righteous behavior, we can reach a point where we, as a society, will deserve condemnation. It happened to the Greek and Roman empires and we have a biblical record of it happening to Sodom & Gomorrha. Why should this nation be any different, if we become corrupt?

killer, waddle on back
your trailer park and turn on the tv before you miss your alternative family on Springer.

We need more than DOMA. We need a constitutional ammendment protecting marriage. PERIOD!

it's very simple and everyone knows this
it' very simple, and everyone knows this:

homosexuals are sterile

homosexuality is sterile

that says all that has to be said about homosexuality, nothing more

but, we can add that homos are frustrated because their "sex" doesnt produce babies nine months after the "sex"

and we can add that the suicidal anal "sex" produces and spreads disease--how could it not?

nothing favors homosexuals

nothing favors homosexuality

nothing recommends homosexuals

nothing recommends homosexuality

Obama's Principles
Perhaps Dear Nellie would be interested in reading about Obama's principles. What say you Dear Nellie? Since you hold BHO in such high esteem, would you take a few minutes and read the following articles?

Conservative artist
These comments are also meant for the other "IDIOTS" on this thread. You have obviously decide not vote for Mr.Obama.This is your constitution right. However, no one has the right to reach the levels of "Stupidity" your post reflect.God will not judge America by ANYTHING,that Mr.Obama has done or will do.Those who make claims of knowing God and his intentions, are most often STRANGERS he has never met.You cannot live one life, that life is your own.Who will answer God when he calls your name;A Bigot,A Racist,A Fool,or a CHRISTIAN?It will not be funny!!!

Barack Hussein Obama,

the champion of sodomy who believes the law should protect sodomists exactly as it protects married heterosexuals.

Barack Hussein Obama, the champion of sodomists. Who believes he has been chosen to lead sodomists and sodomy to social accpetance. How can anyone fail to support a leader with an agenda like that?

Barack Hussein Obama, champion of

sodomy!!! Kind of has a ring to it, do not you think?

Oh, what a Joy
"Obama/fake, we will head into HELL if he is elected."

A very rational thought there Joy.

Ken Doll Candidate
That is what Obama is. He is given free passes on everything because the liberal media, bloggers, homos and government are all dressing him up to convince the sheeple he is a viable candidate. He will say whatever he needs to, to whatever audience he is in front of.

He is like the good looking dumb jock stereotype that has always been able to skate by because he may be charming or is just a dumb cute guy to whomever he is near.

Now we have politicians and useful idiots who have propped him up to near God status and no matter how many times he screws up, they are all blinded by that 'charm'.

My God, have any of you libs ever heard him speak without a pre written speech is front of him? He is like mush mouth and I am not trying to be a bigot here, just a description. He stutters and stammers his way through, trying to come up with words that will appropriately fit his agenda at that moment. When he is confronted with real questions he can't answer he runs the other way. He is not ready to answer that 3 am call, or even a 3 pm call.

He is educated in Law but has never practiced it. He is a 1 term Senator and seems to think he knows how to run not just America but apparently the world too. Because, ya know, the homosexuals have given him a pass, well I guess Whackmadinajad will too. Then Kim Jong will just give up his Super Power aspirations, Chavez will follow and hey maybe even the Castro brothers will have a change of heart because BO will just wink and smile and they will be swayed by the sparkle in his eyes.

That is why the Advocate gave him a free pass. Since homosexuals are defined by and live by there sexuality, they most likely just pictured him naked the whole time.

Be careful what you wish
for, you may get it and find out what Obama is really like.

Go McCain, we need a man who speaks his principles and values and not who will vote for him.

Obama/fake, we will head into HELL if he is elected.

Joy

When judgment comes, each person must answer for themselves. This is why I keep my mouth out of "Other People's Business".God said "Love one Another".Do you ever wonder why he didn't say;"Love Each Other"?What is the consequence for being unhappy?Leave people to their own "Choices", since they are the ones who have to "Pay" for them.To each his/her own!

killer
You bring a good point. The main reason for turning to homosexuality is human narcissism. It's all about me, me, me, me...
My Father knows what's best for me and it's all in the Good Book. It surely isn't sexual immorality. Homosexuality is only part of the larger problem of sexual promiscuity in this country, like adultery and fornication.

Hate vs right or wrong
Killer says that Obama has not been "apprehended by hate". Also, he/she seems to think that only "Christians (not) in good standing themselves" are opposed to homosexuality. Talk about being judgemental!

True Christians don't "hate" homosexuals, but they understand that God has told us that homosexuality is an "abomination" and should be exhorted against.

A clear understanding of sacred scriptures tells us to learn the difference between right and wrong, and willingly obey ALL God's laws, including the injunction to "love one another".

Anyone may decide to pick and choose which of God's laws to follow, or break, but there are ALWAYS consequences to those choices.

I don't "hate" homosexuals. I pray for them.

Discrimination against Religious Peoples
In overturning Prop 22, that marriage is only between a man and a woman, the California Supreme Court has discriminated against religious peoples that hold the Marriage Sacrament to be Holy and a primary practice that sanctifies sexual intercourse between a man and woman.

Judeo/Christian ethics and religious practice sustains the moral judgment that promiscuous sexual intercourse is wrong and sinful (not that believers are without such sin). Homosexuals, on the other hand, have never held that their promiscuous same-sex practices are wrong. They have in fact boisterously exclaimed such practices in their Gay Pride events and incidents of Bath House conduct, all of which have been a source of criticism by both religious and non religious peoples who are offended by promiscuous sexual conduct that has promulgated, by way of one example, the AIDS epidemic in the USA.

The fallacy in the Court's finding is obvious: Bisexuals and Transgender people are not discriminated against because they are prohibited from marrying. They typically have no need to marry in a same-sex relationship. Further, the Bisexual population subscribes to a fully promiscuous lifestyle and represents by far the largest group of the Homosexual Classification. A prominent number of Bisexuals are married in heterosexual relationships and deceitfully violate the marriage commitment with tragic results.

Nellie ~ Good Principles?
Surely you jest! You ask, "Is it sinful to cherish humanity?" How can allowing a baby to be born (even if only to the shoulders) then sticking a needle or a pair of scissors into his/her brain before sucking the brains out to KILL the partially-born baby be a "good principle" or "cherishing humanity"?

What kind of "good principles" did Obama get sitting in a church and listening to hate messages for 20 years? What do his claims of "not hearing the message" say about his devotion during those 20 years? What did his children and his fellow parishioners, including his wife, learn during those 20 years? How will that message benefit the White House?

What kind of "good principles" belittles our constitutional right to bear arms or go to church?

"Good principles"? I think NOT!

TRUTH
Mr.Jeffrey, Senator Obama was able to get ahead of the "Curve" because he had not been apprehended by "Hate".Most people tend to quote the bible when "Gay Marriage" is discuss, even though they are not Christians in good standing themselves.Procreation at one time was the measure but it was overruled by the fact, that everyone does not want children. Then came the "Fire and Brimstone" and this too had little or no impact. Finally, the young began to realize;I have one life and my father would want me to be happy.Man had a chance to stop this turn to the same sex,but his "Stupidity" and "Prejudice" forced people to seek a "Change".Did we honestly think, that Western Civilization with all it's "Prejudices" would remain un"CHANGED".You don't have to answer that...I know!!!

Nellie
The God that I know does not accept homosexuality. It's a deviant behavior and therefore it's a sin, and the wages of sin is what...death. He does not aceppt lying either. Obama is a liar, a racist pig and worst of all a communist. Have you read "Dreams from my Father" or "The audacity of Hope"? Racism is oozing from the pages. He advocates communal and socialist policies that failed everywhere else, just ask uncle Stalin. Just how stupid are you?
Remember, God does not change but the definition of sin does not change either: sexual immorality, sodomy, covetousness, malice, envy, murder, slander, insolence, rebellion against parents, ruthlessness, deceit, pride and the like (Romans).
Jesus never condemns homosexual behavior, but his words about marriage and singleness are very pertinent. In Matthew 19:1-12, Jesus offers two options in regard to sexual behavior--fidelity in marriage or celibacy in singleness. He suggests that divorce was not God's original intent for human beings, and that he was now reinforcing the original creational intent for men and women to be together in holy wedlock. He then suggests that anyone who cannot handle fidelity in marriage should either become (or remain) a eunuch, or stay celibate for the sake of the kingdom of God. The implication of absolutely no sexual sharing outside of marriage, whether of a heterosexual or homosexual sort, is very clear. Jesus is indeed asking for celibacy in singleness, whatever one's sexual predilections might be.

You need to relize that God is really just God and He will punish you unless you repent. Living in homosexual lifestyle earns you death and punishment for eternity.

Steven, Whether Obama 'panders' is not
so important [as politician]. We hope he will pander the least of all politicians.

Clinton "wasn't so dumb"?, "knows a sin from a non-sin"? Clinton(s) sin, and expect us to hail them for it. Bill Clinton's sins are written all over his worn and torn face. Look, we all sin. God is our judge. He brings us to where we need to be, inorder to know Him. We have our own personal monitoring to do. Haven't we?

There is no free pass from sin. We all must face it head on, sooner or later.

Obama has better moral character than any politican in a very long time. His stature is misunderstood, unfortunetly. Try to see this man from God's eyes. Give him a chance to bring his principles to our nation's highest office. They're good principles.

And by-golly, we sure can use good principles leading our nation for humanity's sake, today.

Is it sinful to cherish humanity? It IS sinful to degrade the Oval Office.

November will tell the truth!
In November we will go to the polls to vote. If we are opposed to abortion, especially partial-birth abortion, bigger government, more social troughs and same-sex marriage, we will vote for the more conservative candidate.
If we are worried about having a President who wants to sit down with Ahmadinejad and debase the USA, we will vote for his opponent.
It seems that ALL politicians say whatever is expedient. Obama answered critics who groused because he didn't sit down and talk with Petraus to discuss conditions in Iraq by stating he "saw Petraus". I "saw" Bush, Obama, McCain, Ahmadinejad, David Letterman and Jay Leno. Course I viewed my TV, rather than sitting across the room, but I wasn't lying, was I?
Obama is a slick politician, ergo, he double-talks & kisses up to whomever will bring him votes

Jenna Bush and Ellen
I guess that some of you have not heard but Jenna Bush, who recently got married, has invited Ellen her friend to be married on the Bush Ranch.

Sherry, aren't you confusing values with
view points?

Values: we are God's creating. not man's.
He's designed us and declared us beautiful.

View points: can change over time, as we comprehend just how infinite God's creations are.

We need not attempt to instruct the Lord. We need to understand His commandments. They are clear and simple. But we keep trying to alter them, through our own lack of understanding.

Aren't we wiser when we grow older? God's goal posts are not moving. Our understanding of His goal posts must change, inorder for us to meet Him.

Human Life is precious. We must grow to understand that Truth. Otherwise, we perish.

Terence, haven't read your article yet,
but just wondering...

isn't it natural to desire to learn and to grow? As we grow, we can't help but to alter our views of the world in which we live in.

there are basic fundamental laws which sustain us, even as our views change. granted.

Marriage for homos and other Sexual Dev
Brak Obama the famous ORATOR, Abe Lincoln of Negroes has spoken again on another subject he most likely knows very little, Perverts.
Marriage of these deviant perverts is outrageous! Remember Brak Obama, a pimple on the behind of society, 57 states, guns and religeon for the NASCAR beer drinkers and an Uncle in the Russian army. Whatever!
More important is the toilet don't work in the space station! Thats a real problem!

Vying for "First White Metro President"?
Remember when Bill Clinton was dubbed by (I believe) Alice Walker as the nation's "first Black president"? Wow, that seemed like eons ago, not to mention the recent drubbing of the Clintons by Obama's campaign in the South, especially the Carolinas.

It remains to be seen how well Obama's statements recorded above in the Advocate will go over even within his new strong African American consituency, especially after a lot of the preachers get a look at these remarks.

He admits his Christian faith, but he's not willing to put his faith before political expediency. Nothing new there, but the brazeness in the casual way he puts it.

Then he gives predominately African American churches/parishes the same elitist brush off he gave "frustrated" gun-owning, religious white folks living in blue-collar factory towns.

Maybe he's more interested in being the first "white Metrosexual president." Maybe Bubba will still be America's "first Black president" after all. Compared to Obama, Bill Clinton, despite his peccadillos, and pile of (admitted) sins, increases in stature every day. At least Clinton wasn't so dumb as to dis DOMA. And even Clinton knows a sin from a non-sin. What does Obama know. Or better yet, what did Wright drum out of him and the rest of his parishoners?

And I'm writing this as a white potato-faced Catholic son of Erin!

Gay in the Family
I know the angst felt by a gay couple not accepted as a married couple; although, they have been together exclusively for fifteen years. And they're men! BUT they knew what they were getting into, and they shouldn't expect the rest of us to change our values to assuage their consciences. We need DOMA!

Marriage
Once again trying to have it both ways. I also ask, what curve?

Summary
In summation: Obama shows his willingness to pander to anything and/or anybody to try and gain a vote. Now that's real leadership....

What Curve?
Obama's curve keeps shifting depending on how much the voters like the idea in question. The curve that indicated Wright was a problem or that wright was an uncle who could not be disowned? The curve that made him say the lapelle pin was 'false' patriotism or the one that makes him wear a lapelle pin everyday? the curve that made him describe small town middle class americans as 'bitter and frustrated americans' or the one that made him say he supports gun ownership rights? The curve that made him vote to withhold medicine for featuses that survive abortion or the one that made him say 'i'll teach my kids about morals first'? The curve that made him say in 2004 that he would be not be experienced enough to run for president in 2008 or the one that drives him to argue that the position of POTUS does not require experience? The curve that makes him join a religion that is race-obsessed or the one that makes him argue because of his mixed-race background he can 'unite' this country? The curve that makes him say he has superior judgement and therefore voters should overlook his lack of experience or the one that makes him say he will hire experienced people to guide him in his decision making process as POTUS? What curve? In obama's life - all curves lead to one place LIES LIES LIES!

No Surprise Here . . .
. . . among Mr. Obama's biggest campaign contributors are openly gay Hollywood executives and other entertainment moguls of that particular stripe, not to mention billionaire Tim McGill.
