Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Given his 20 years of pastoring to Barack Obama, you would have to assume that if any of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's declarations have a particular claim to credibility it would be his repeated assertion over the past week that Obama does not always say what he means.

"He's a politician," Wright explained to Bill Moyers on PBS. "And he says what he has to say as a politician. He does what politicians do."

"Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites, based on polls, Huffington, whoever's doing the polls," Wright said of Obama at the National Press Club. "He does what politicians do."

Wright's insight on Obama highlights one of Obama's underappreciated skills: a Bill Clinton-like ability to say one thing and mean another, and to say things listeners must parse and parse again in search of a solid meaning.

One of the best examples of this kind from Bill Clinton is found in the transcript of a White House press conference held on March 7, 1997.

Reporters were pressing Clinton in those days on his campaign fundraising methods. "I don't believe you can find any evidence of the fact that I had changed government policy solely because of a contribution," said Clinton.

What exactly did that mean?

Give Clinton the benefit of the doubt and you must assume he meant to say something neater, cleaner and less ambiguous: I never changed government policy because of a contribution.

But it doesn't take much imagination to conjure up alternative interpretations: I never changed government policy solely because of a contribution, only partly because of a contribution. Or, I did change government policy solely because of a contribution, but I don't believe you will ever find the evidence.

Take a look at some of the things Obama has said in the past year on the campaign trail, and you will see a true talent for Clintonisms.

In the CNN-YouTube debate last July, the aspiring populist and newly minted multimillionaire was asked whether he sent his children to private or public schools. "My kids have gone to the University of Chicago Lab School, a private school, because I taught there, and it was five minutes from our house," he said. "So it was the best option for our kids."

Had Obama taught at a public school five minutes from his house would that have been the best option for his kids? Had the private school been 10 minutes away and a public school only five minutes away, would the difference in distance trump his status as a former teacher?

One wonders at the sort of decisional crisis Obama might have undergone had he taught at a reform school just a minute from his house.

During the Democratic Compassion Forum at Messiah College on April 13, Obama turned another nice phrase when he defined for the audience the precise point at which -- in his generous view -- freedom of speech and the right to privacy intersect.

"And those who are opposed to abortion, I think, should continue to be able to lawfully object and try to change the laws," he said.

Presumably, reasonable people could take the opposite position that those opposed to abortion should no longer be able to lawfully object and try to change the laws.

Undoubtedly Obama's greatest Clintonism, however, is what he said about the Iraq War in a Jan. 31 debate in Los Angeles.

"So, I have said very clearly I will end this war," said Obama. "And I also think we've got to be very clear about what our mission is, and there may be a difference here between Sen. Clinton and myself in terms of the force structures that we would leave behind. Both of us have said we would make sure that our embassies and our civilians are protected. Both of us have said that we've got to care for Iraqi civilians, including the 4 million who have been displaced already. ... We both have said that we need to have a strike force that can take out potential terrorist bases that get set up in Iraq."

I will end this war, Obama was apparently saying, but after I have ended this war, I will keep troops in Iraq to fight people who attack our embassies, to fight people who attack our civilians, to fight people who attack Iraqi civilians and to fight terrorists who try to set up bases in Iraq.

Is it any wonder that even his former pastor parses what Obama says?

If he can do that, the Democrats could lose a third straight presidential election.

Unfortunate Events
The Wright episode is not very timely for Obama but was to happen sooner or later. It was going to come in Hillary's time or McShame's. It may be too late for Hillary. And don't forget, Wright is writing his book so look for it in the stores -- a few million for the Revrun Wright. He is not going to get his millions the good old fashion way like Jesse Jackson and Al the-hair Sharpton. Now perhaps the Stupid-delegates will have something to hang their votes on, not just plain old voter votes and silly things. Those voters need to be saved from themselves.

Obama can't perform under pressure
Obama can read scripts and placards on a podium but americans also need a president who can sound coherent under pressure. Has anyone noticed how weak and uneloquent Obama sounds when he is under pressure? During the last debate and during the 'wright' conference, he was stummering and staggering all over the place. He could not complete a sentence. This man is unqualified and too inexperienced to be POTUS. The president will need to show strength and resolve when dealing with our enemies and opponents domestically and abroad - Obama has not demonstrated those qualities given how he has handled his campaign crisis. It's time to pick a president - and Obama is not the change americans can believe in.

KY Rep Ben Chandler endorses Big O......
On the same day that Obama cries foul against Rev Wright, my local congressman uses his super delegate vote to endorse Obama. Just the day before Mr Chandler had said he was not prepared to endorse either candidate. He would make a good VP for Obama, both are now disconnected from the real average folks.

OT from a seldom-poster
OT OT OT
OT: To any and all who tend to reply to this "svirk" person:
Are you stupid, or insane, or both? This person, whose replies and discourse in these threads is (thankfully) mostly confined to discussions about Islam and Muslims, is engaging in something called Taqiyya. I'm sure you've heard the term, but if you had any real clue what the term means, and what the practice IS, then stupidity and insanity can be the only reasons to bother responding. The only good reason to respond to taqiyya is to bring out more of it, so you can learn even more about it. One thing you do not understand, and it is painfully obvious after reading otherwise intelligent posts, is that you cannot win. It is not possible to win any debate with someone who is practicing this Dark Art. Go back and read all DSouza articles, and read the threads. You may notice a pattern with svirk and the (obviously) unwitting dupes (who are otherwise quite intelligent and reasoned posters). You make statements, he/she responds with taqiyya, you continue to respond back as if svirk cared to have a reasoned discussion, and nobody, but NOBODY calls him/her on the taqiyya. Please understand that this svirk (Peace...ha.) is practicing something he/she has been taught from a very young age. Most, though not all, of his responses are along the lines of:

You would have to be ignorant to believe that. You are stupid when you say such things. You are not a Muslim and therefore you have no idea what you are talking about. You show by your response that you are ignorant of Islam. Etc. Etc. Etc. It's also called "outwitting" and is anything but. There are many more aspects to this form of "debate", and svirk uses a lot of them. And you otherwise intelligent posters fall for it.

(cont.)

OT continued
I have not (yet) seen svirk use the tactic of saying You do not know Arabic, therefore you did not really read the real Quran, but I expect that it's been used. (Nevermind that if I p*ss on an English Quran, millions will riot...but i thought it wasn't a real Quran? Only for the purposes of Taqiyya.) WHEN WILL YOU PEOPLE WAKE UP. You cannot reason with non-reason, especially when the non-reason is intentional.

At LGF we have a concept called GAZE. Pretend that svirk never posted at all, scroll by. You are fighting a losing battle when attempting to reason with svirk. If you think you know what Taqiyya is, and you continue to respond to him/her, then you need to do more research. GAZE. Learn it. Use it. Otherwise you're just playing 3-card monty with a (ahem) pro, and showing yourself to be gullible.

Apologies
My apologies, but I seldom post here, I have limited time at the library, and it's something I wanted at the beginning of a thread. I'll probably post it one more time on a more relevant thread (i.e. one about Islam in which svirk and his unwitting responders are likely to appear.)

Fighting the unending battle against taqiyya and Da'wa,

my two cents
Lest we stand accused of running the republican hate machine, lest we stand accused of a vast right-wing conspiracy, I would advise that we let the bo phenomenon run its course.

Miracle of miracles, even BILL MOYERS is doing our bidding by running the film of rev. wright (?) doing his thing. We are SO unworthy.

And the dems are STUCK with this guy for the foreseeable future. If they have an attack of common sense they will find a way to get the nomination away from bo and give it to Sen. Hillary "50% negatives out of the gate" Clinton.

This is theater of the highest caliber - you CAN'T make this up. I suggest we keep our powder dry for the time when we need it and for the time being just stand to one side and enjoy this foodfight.

The Pastor Parses Obama
Your article has hit on the very reason why I detest the far left. They all say one thing but mean something else. Or, they was make an assertion but finish by withdrawing it with a barrage of words that most people miss.

At least the Rev. Wright is honest. He outwardly hates America. white people, and democratic government. There's only one thing he lies about; he uses words of hate yet says he follows Jesus. I would challenge everyone everywhere to read the gospels and ascertain if Jesus' words were filled with hate.

Gee
17 out of 21 TH columns are about Pastor Wright today - I'm so glad conservatives are staying on top of the really important stuff.

I can't wait for your Miley Cyrus columns - don't keep us in suspense! We need to know what is really important to conservative Americans!

Take 5 Think 4
Liberals apparently don't think keeping a raving racist out of the White House is an important issue .... Besides it's the DEMS doing this to themselves not us.

Agent

Liberals apparently don't think keeping a raving racist out of the White House is an important issue .."
------------

Not true, Agent - It's just that Dems don't think that Wright is running for office.

Rhetorical trick
If you say you're going to be very clear about something, you can follow with gobbledegook and there's still a chance your listener will think you've been clear.
The other advantage is then you can say "I've been very clear about that it the past..."

deathstar
And I presume you still believe Mr. Clinton was impeached because he was having illicit sex with anything that had female secondary sexual characteristics, and that is why we should have all "moved on"?

Speaking Code
I think that this split between Obama and Wright may be contrived.

Is it conceivable that when Wright says "He's a politician... And he says what he has to say as a politician. He does what politicians do." it is code to all the leftist listeners to mean "He really doesn't mean this about me, we're still bro's, he's just saying that to make the whiteys relax"?

Meaning
In re "Countryman's" question, "Is it conceivable that when Wright says "He's a politician... And he says what he has to say as a politician. He does what politicians do." it is code to all the leftist listeners to mean "He really doesn't mean this about me, we're still bro's, he's just saying that to make the whiteys relax"?" I respond by asking yet another question.
Is it not true that when Wright says ""He's a politician... And he says what he has to say as a politician. He does what politicians do." that this is a verbose way of saying, "Obama is a liar?"

wbheff
An interesting thought, that that is his way of calling Obama a liar, but from reading and listening to Wright, he doesn't seem the type to beat around the bush. If he wanted to call him a liar, he would have said so in no uncertain terms, invoking the 9th Commandment, etc.

Obama screws Wright without a kiss
Obamba screws Wright without even a kiss
I never thought I'd be defending Rev. Wright, HOWEVER, Obamba is the WORST liar by denouncing his "friend" and pastor, and it is obvious now that he just used him.
THAT is despicable.

Obamba used Rev. Wright, his church, his connections, and anything else he could get to jumpstart his campaign. And NOW he actually thinks that he can just screw him and split?
Think again.

Obamba's chickens will come home to roost for this one.

Look to see Rev. Wright come out and mock Obamba and worse for feigning shock and disgust over his speech. He is NOT going to let Obamba screw him without so much as a kiss. That’s RAPE in my book, and worse, perverted Obamba insists we WATCH!

Rev. Wright is a lot of things and I've been one of his fiercest critics, but he's not a LIAR like Obamba.

I'm on Rev. Wright's side on this one.

monique
all the oblahma has proven is that he is nothing more than your typiucal politician. Thinking he will never be held accountable for what he says or who he wraps his arms around.'

But like his roile models the clintons he has learned that any and all can and should be sacrificed if itr furthers your careers.

The oblahma however can only look good while he stays on script. Once he gets off script or is asked questions he doesn't like, he stumbles badly.

If he can't stay nimble facing the msm or gets thrown off key by his sudden realization that wright was speaking in very divisive terms brings into question his judgement of others.

But for wright and his church, they must feel totally betrayed by nothing more than a conniving politician. The oblahma needed wright and his church to find his black identity and to establish his street credentials.

Now that he has found favor amongst the coastal elites and the brie and chablis set he can cast aside his chicago connections to hobnob with his new buddies who can proudly speak of their new black friend

wildwest
Really, why shouldn't Obama have thought he could weather this storm if it came up?He knew it would come up sooner or later.Better sooner, than later, too.Get it out of the way.

As far as being held accountable for all his errors in judgement, since when has ANY Democrat been held accountable? Name any of the dastardly Democrats who have paid for their sins?
Even the impeached Bill Clinton got much less than he deserved.

Clinton paid for lying under oath, when he was guilty of so much more.Time or space will not allow me to name all the Democrats who have broken the law and have never paid.It would only take a second to name the ones who have.

You've proven all by yourself, with your "cut and paste" approach to these columns, that you cannot. So, once again I invite you to depart, if the columnists and the subject matter is offensive to you go back to Huff'n glue.com, or the daily Kommunist. That is where you belong.
