Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Der Spiegel, the German newsweekly, came up with the most telling headline on the war in Gaza, its interpretation of the voice of Hamas: "Hurray! We Lost!" This interpretation took a cue from the soccer coach who was fond of telling his team about to play a weak opponent, "They cannot win against us, but we can lose against them."

That's what Israel discovered for itself when its soldiers went into Gaza to answer the Hamas rockets. The Israelis killed 1,300 Palestinians, including a number of high-ranking Palestinian officials, wounded several thousand more and destroyed much of the Hamas military infrastructure, all in just three weeks. They were nevertheless told they had lost.

After Israel announced a cease-fire, Ismail Haniya, the "prime minister of Gaza," came out of hiding and declared victory. Such chutzpah, observes der Speigel, could only be compared to the Black Knight in a Monty Python movie: "After King Arthur cuts off both of the knight's arms and legs, he tells him, 'All right, we'll call it a draw.'"

What happened in Gaza is tragic, but the satirical comparison is not far-fetched. Hamas is winning world public opinion for a seat at the negotiating table as the hue and cry against Israel's "disproportionality" continues to dominate the international media. The moral balance weighs on behalf of Hamas despite its cowardly decision to place rocket launchers and armaments in mosques, schools and hospitals.

Talk about "eyeless in Gaza" (with apologies to Aldous Huxley). In the Middle East, it's the blind who think they see most clearly. The Europeans, terrified into paralysis by the Muslims in their midst, echo Arab claims. Protesting crowds in Paris, Berlin and London blame the Jews and elevate Hamas to heroic status merely for surviving Israel's onslaught in Gaza.

"Hamas has survived the war," observes Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the German newspaper. "It exists, and it is here to stay. Therefore, it is essential that an easing of the Western boycott against the Islamists is considered."

By this logic, the Palestinians might deserve a seat on the United Nations Security Council as soon as they lose a few more wars. Humanitarian help for wounded civilians is the honorable thing to do, but anything more is perverse. The cease-fire was quickly broken by Hamas.

Not everyone in Gaza sees "survival" as euphemism for victory. Gaza builder Mohammed Sadalah, whose house was appropriated by Hamas to use as an emplacement for guns to shoot at Israelis, spoke to reporters as he stood in the ruins of what used to be his bedroom. Hamas came to power by handing out groceries with a message of change, an antidote to the corruption of Fatah, but Mohammed Sadalah is not persuaded. He points to the destruction of his village: "That is the change that they brought about. We were blasted back 2,000 years."

Some former Hamas supporters like Sadalah think Hamas is likely now to follow the example of Hezbollah, which like Hamas claimed dubious victory against Israel in 2006. But Hezbollah gave no help to Hamas for fear of Israeli retaliation. It understands how bad that bad can be. When rockets were fired at Israel from Lebanon, the Lebanese prime minister lost no time in condemning them.

On Jan. 27, many people interrupted their daily routine to recognize Holocaust Memorial Day, an observance marked this year against the marches of those who wish Israel and the Jews only ill. Jewish-owned shops across Europe were sprayed with insulting graffiti, and marchers shouted insults reprised from the Nazi days: "Gas the Jews," and, "Get back to the ovens!"

Anti-Semitism always speaks with a forked tongue. Few Europeans decried the excessive force of Hamas as it fired more than 6,000 rockets since 2005 at Israel, killing and wounding civilians, and turning every night into a fearful nightmare. Where was the appreciation of the skill of Israeli pilots who carefully calibrated targets in neighborhoods where Hamas hid weapons and supplies, dropping leaflets warning Palestinians to get out of the neighborhood?

Remembering Jews killed in the Holocaust is important, but memory must recognize the perpetrators of violence as well as change attitudes. As long as a double standard exists toward Jews, memorializing the Holocaust becomes empty sentiment and "never again" a vacant promise.

"There are a great many people in the world," writes Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, in The Wall Street Journal, "who even after Auschwitz just can't bear the Jewish state having the same rights they so readily grant to other nations."

That's the real disproportionality. This is the message for George Mitchell, the new presidential envoy to the Middle East, to keep firmly in mind as he attempts to "process" peace.

who won
Who won the war depends on what the purpose of the war was. If the goal was to kill more people then clearly the Israelis won without breaking a sweat. If the goal was to advance various aims, then clearly Hamas one.

Despite that one guy who gets quoted in every anti-Hamas article, Hamas' position among the Palestinians was strengthened. While Israel got nothing it couldn't have gotten by agreeing to a continuation of the cease fire which had been in effect.

Essentially what one sees in Fields sputtering column is a list of ways that Hamas gained and Israel lost. It is true if this was like an NFL game should could point to reasons why killing more people should count as winning.

But in the real world the things she points too as people missing who really won, are actually the things that count as winning.

Well said Suzanne
One thing that is disheartening is the fact the USA is really against Israel. With Mitchell, Rice, Hillary C Israel is in fire straits. I would hope Israel will follow Gods instructions versus the World Community. If she doesn't she is lost.

Acquired taste
We've got piles and piles of feces and vomit mixed to just the proper consistency. We'll continue to shovel it down your throats, because this action then creates more vomit and feces. We gather it up, put it in piles and the process begins again: We shovel it down your throats! I think I've just more than adequately illustrated the Hamas position with regard to the Palestinians under their rule. No wonder many prefer death.

Numbers are important
Funny that you didn't say how many fatalities were caused by those 6,000 rockets fired from Gaza since 2005? I think it stands at around 20. Compared that to how many people have died on Gaza due the Israeli blockade and you might see why some have a different perspective on the issue that has nothing to do with anti-Semitism...

Sparky
Do numbers tell the whole story?

What if only 1 person was killed by the Hamas rocket attacks? Does that mean Israel can never respond? Isn't the shooting of even one rocket an act of war?

And why don't you focus on another number - the number of bomb shelters provided by Israel for its citizens (the real reason why there are so few Israeli casualties) vs. the number provided by Hamas to the citizens of Gaza (and you cannot count the bunkers in which the cowardly Hamas leadership hides itself under the Gaza hospital).

Try to change the name from Israel, to a differnet country, and then think really hard about whether a double standard is being applied.

Cowards?
You might call Hama technoligically dissadvantaged. You might say they mix terrorism with political blackmail. You might say they are egotistical fools.

But calling them cowards is not only false, it is counter productive whenyou realize they are really fighting for their pride, the main objective of Arab culture.

PRIDE COMETH BEFORE DESTRUCTION,AND A HAUGHTY SPIRIT BEFORE A FALL. WHEN YOU THINK YOU ARE SUPERMAN,THAT'S WHEN YOU USUALLY FALL FLAT ON YOUR FACE.

I'll presume you were trying to be sarky or to post satire. Otherwise, how do you explain "two-nation theory" (the one promulgated 1937-1947 as basis for Pakistan--and still taught in that country despite of its undeniably being revealed in 1971 as based on fallacy).

...........
Great article.

Chad you bedwetting sap, these hamas cockroaches hide under womens skirts when they shoot at Israelis. They're cowards just like those on the left.

Mark-FL
Re Numbers--I've asked several times that someone explain to me what proportionality in war/armed conflict means..If I were teaching the class I might say something like "if Ur gonna fight the d@mned thing fight to win!! How's that for proportional?
By the way I'm still waiting for a definition of "Middle class" since we, I hope I'm middle class, are the stated recipients of all these goodies aka Stimulus..I've never seen any *help*

I'd
be careful RW, you are either ignorant or an
atheist but God was very specific when he called Abraham. He promised Abraham, that He'd bless those who bless Israel and He'd curse those who curse Israel..and believe me God keeps His promises. If we dare to betray Israel, and go against her, this current trouble we are having will look like a picnic compared to what we'd be subjected to by being like the other cowardly socialist countries.
I don't care if you believe me or not, but
believe God says what He means and means what He says. The Jewish people were given that land centuries ago by God, it doesn't belong to
any one else.

HAMAS' BAGDAD BOB IS NOT WINNING
But Eurostan is loosing. They chant 'THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE' - but they're all lieing all over the place, maube thinking they get free salvation with a bonus 70 virgins for killing Jews [oops, I mean Zionists!].

Its not a 2-state but a deathly 3-state.

They're not Palestinians.

Israel is falsely being accused of 'OCCUPYING' 12% of the land allocated her in the Balfour.

The irony is, the same weapon Europe planned for Israel - overwhelming by Muslims - is actually happening to her perpertrators. Frank N. Stein has made a U-Turn.

'AND THOSE WHO CURSE YOU...

Its an Aussie invention - not European - not Arab.

Not true, Iran didn't want Hezbollah to respond because they knew Israel was looking for a pretext to bomb Iran, they almost did anyway. Iran held back.

Also, this wasn't a war. The Israelis bombed and killed indiscriminately hundreds of people. And they lost the battle, the seeds they sowed no one in their right minds would look forward to.

Tea Party
Show us the deed, teabag (and no, it isn't the one the Gideons place in hotel rooms). Now you make an even dozen, so scram.

proportionality
Talk of proportionality in warfare is a display of stupidity. Let me tell you what someone who knew had to say about it –

If you are going to use military force, then you ought to use overwhelming military force. Use too much and deliberately use too much. You will save lives. Not only your own, but the enemy’s too. – Curtis LeMay

Rick
Yes, of course use full force against opposing armies, the Israelis used it against kids and women and schools.ect. You can't seriously believe that slaughtering thousands of people will save lives?

Some perspectives on these methods.

Definition of insanity
Continue to fire rockets into civilian areas of a nation that surrounds you and can destroy you without breaking a sweat.

What did the Gazans THINK was going to happen?

Double standards?
The left tells us that we can resolve conflicts peacefully if we just talk enough to our enemies and find out what they want.

Why doesn't this apply to Hamas?

Make Love Not War
It is not possible for Israel to win a final war with Hamas. The third world owns the high ground of public opinion which checkmates Israel. Peace in Gaza can only be bought by giving a monthly welfare check to its residents. We would create a paradise of soccer players by day and romantic Hash smokers by night. Their thoughts of revolution would end. Lovers want peace not war.

The goal
of Islam is to make the whole world Islamic, or bow to the power of Islam. (Muslims actually LIKE slavery...do you understand THAT, all you blacks who deify Obama?)

If you truly want peace with Islam, Islam offers a choice; join us or die! If you can't get that, think of it this way: "You will be assimilated!"

The problem Arabs (notice here I say Arab, not Muslim) have with Jews is that God chose the legitimate seed of Abraham as his chosen people. So, unfortunately, Israel get double enmity; they're not Muslims and they are Jewish.

I really do wish that Israel can some day find peace, that their neighbors can somehow learn to live and let live. But I fear that will not be the case, as Muslims LIKE being "slaves to Allah."

THE BLOODSHED IN GAZA
PLEASE. THIS ARTICLE IS ONE-SIDEDNESS TO THE EXTREME!

No outcry over Kassams?
Susan notes that the Kassams killed people every now and then didn't create a public outcry. Why is that? Hamas is better at the Torah than you are. Devearim 7:22 says take the land over little by little. If small fighting in is normal in Israel no one cares. The Palestinian women take over the land by babies little by little. Bankers make money grow little by little. Religious settlers in the west bank take the land over little by little. To bad it seems like all these guys in charge of Israel were raised in Soviet Russian and don't even know what the Bible is. A doy!

Admit they were dragged into doing bad
Claiming moral superiority really doesn't work when you reluctantly are dragged into being the accomplice to murder by forced marterdom. Better to just do the dirty deed as clean as you can but admit it is still unsavory. In fact, the benefits of vociferous counterprotesting are decreased if you make a bitter deal about the kassams than they really are. Just stop or slow the rockets and get on with life. They are no longer human shields if you shot them one way or another. My illustration would be in soccer if you opponent comes on the field with bare shins instead of guards there. Don't complain, just play the game full speed, don't draw atention to it if you kick him by accident. Then when you win you know you won and who cares if he says he won cause then people won't blame you cause he said he won.

Israel to be betrayed by USA

It was Mitchell who brokered the UK's surrender to Irish terrorism, with the hard left Tony Blair capitulating in a rare show of passivity (the only other conflict where Blair advocates surrender instead of war is Israel Palestine - elsewhere he managed ten wars in eleven years, two of those being illegal (Bosnia and Iraq)) and with a Clinton forcing through the deal because it was getting in the way of his fornication schedule.

Mitchell and Blair will now try to force surrender onto Israel. I pray god that they have the strength to resist.

Racist socialists like you make me sick.
