Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The notabilities of the mainstream media are suffering acute PMS. That's Palin Motherhood Syndrome.

Instead of appreciating Sarah Palin as mother, experienced executive and smart politician, they're venting their rage at the multitasking mom. How could she hide her pregnancy for so many months? How dare she return to work as governor of Alaska three days after giving birth? How could she deprive her teenage daughter of effective sex education? And how could she have deprived both herself and the daughter of an abortion when that would have solved everything so neatly?

National Public Radio interviews women about what they think of the way Sarah Palin fuels the "Mommy Wars." Unlike the pollsters, NPR finds mostly women who describe the governor as "selfish" and "overambitious," whose heart simply isn't in the right place. The working mothers who juggle work and children say that juggling five children is wrong, but don't say exactly what the perfect number would be. Four? Three? Six? Some of these women were liberal feminists who only yesterday applauded women who combine children and careers. Not now. Not with Sarah Palin. The times, they must be a-changing back.

Modern feminism pushed careers for mothers with such success that by 1980 more than half (54 percent) of married women with children under 18 worked outside the home. Newsweek magazine that year identified "the Superwoman Squeeze," cataloging the pressures exerted on the 18-hour mom. By 1998, more than 60 percent of children under 6 had working mothers. Stories abound of women leaving the workplace to enjoy the domestic tranquility of mothering, but Pew researchers find that over 10 years of polling Americans disapprove of working mothers by a margin of two to one.

Pollsters, of course, ask only general questions about attitudes, and Americans are now asked to judge one specific working mother, as Sarah shakes up the findings in a very different way. As the Republican candidate for vice president of the United States, she identifies several new subsets of voters who are likely to vote for her:

-- Mothers (and fathers) accused of bad parenting because a teenage daughter gets pregnant or a teenage son gets a girl pregnant. (It still takes two.) The parents of these children may have given personal, sensitive, correct messages about birth control or abstinence, their children may have had the best sex education courses that public and private schools offer, but "life happens," and not always for the best in a pop culture saturated with sex.

-- Mothers who joined the PTA to support their children's education and learned that as important as it was to work on the local level there were many unexpected reasons why their children didn't do well in school. They may have had poor teachers, pushed forward through union seniority rather than merit, and they may have had no alternative to bad schools, such as vouchers and charter schools.

-- Educated women, scorned for retreating from an "elite" education and careers only to become hockey and soccer moms, adopting, like Sarah Palin, different timetables for different times in their lives.

-- Feminists for Life, whose choices in behalf of the sanctity of life are scorned as "anti-woman" because these feminists believe it morally wrong to choose abortion. Like Sarah Palin, these women understand that hard choices require taking painful ethical responsibility.

-- "Oprah viewers" who thought America's most popular women's talk-show host meant it when she said she would interview women of accomplishment, but who now says she will entertain Sarah Palin only after the election. (She might find it more difficult to get an interview with a vice president.)

-- Working men and women who feel put down by Barack Obama's claim that they are embittered and cling to guns and religion, and who agree with the governor that "we tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco."

-- Men and women who admire John McCain, "the maverick," and who prior to the conventions thought him too conventional for an authentic maverick. His unconventional choice for running mate restores the image of independence.

Voters are continuing to measure the two men at the top of the tickets and their judgment in choosing running mates. The Democrats continue to push the notion that John McCain and George W. are attached at the hip, but Sarah Palin has squeezed the president out of the frame. She's showing America that sometimes the best man for the job is a woman.

Sarah Handled Interview Exceptionally
Poor Charlie Gibson, thought he would be able to make Governor Palin stumble. I thought she had a quick, decisive response to all his questions. I'd like to see Charlie sit Obama down and ask him those exact same questions. What's kept Charlie from asking Obama so far? He's had 18 months to get some specifics from Obama, and hasn't done it yet. I though Palin was pretty good during the interview and I think she will do very well in the VP debate.

Good Article Ms. Fields!
You clearly reveal the hypocrisy of the so-called feminists. These FemiNazis believe in womens' rights or accomplishments only as it serves their agendas or purposes, nothing more. Gov. Palin is a brilliant ray of sunlight shining through a world of feminist shadow, revealing clearly and without question that women have other options besides abort on demand.

Motherhood-Bashing Helps McCain-Palin
There are a lot more people who have (or have had) children than those who don't. Bashing motherhood serves to bind us more closely with McCain-Palin because they more closely resemble "us," the little guy or gal. Palin is more than qualified; she's earned it without being a victim. The liberal feminists feel like Sarah shouldn't be where she is if she made it there without their angry-lib feminist support. Sarah Palin achieved on her OWN, and it bugs the heck out of the liberal feminists.

It's not the economy, stupid.
It's all about Roe vs. Wade - that ad hoc judicial construction which assures women the equal right to be irresponsible.

Gibson interview
I did not see the Gibson interview of Palin, but read a 4 page transcript which I assume to be the complete interview.

For sure Gibson ought to ask similar questions of McCain, Obama and Biden.

Palin did pretty well, although she had to explain when asked if Georgia were admitted to NATO and Russia invaded it, would we be obligated to go to war with Russia over Georgia(McCain and Bush both favor placing Georgia in NATO).

She said yes, but then had to do a little dance and say that what she meant was "economic and diplomatic" warfare, which is what Bush is doing now.

And then she said there is no need to resurrect the Cold War.

I think only an idiot would actually support getting into a hot war with Russia over Georgia.

But there are some real idiots out there.

And Palin, when confronted with the possible consequences of an asinine policy of NATO-izing Georgia, did have the judgment to amend her remarks to economic and diplomatic measures, rather than military confrontation.

Still, the fact she supports McCain and Bush on this is troubling.

I thought she did well on the energy and global warming questions.

Sarah Palin is a Feminist like me
She is a Feminist like Mama, who worked full time and raised five children back in the early 1960s and did not consider herself a feminist and never would. She was concerned with giving her kids the best start she could. She could not stop us from misbehaving (neither could Daddy -- four of us were teenagers at the same time) any more than Mrs. Palin could; no mother can be with her children 100% of the time. Like Mrs. Palin she instilled morality in us and was there when we screwed up to remind us and be sure we picked up the pieces.

I reared two boys on my own with the help of extended family and did not consider it anybodys business *how* I managed; I knew how to prioritize and learned how to juggle, and the boys learned that old Red Green motto *We are all in this together* was the bedrock of th family. Mrs. Palins kids clearly know they are all in this together. Even the seven year old is clearly not a helpless toddler.

In the old days, before that halcyon time between 1948 and 1960 that people seem to believe was the norm instead of an idyll, Mrs. Palin was the norm among women. And if you do not believe that, read the Little House on the Prairie books.

Surprise!
Is there any discussion about the People magazine's description of Willow's discovery of Trig's condition?

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Palin admitted she didn't know how to break the news."

In all those months leading up to the birth, Mom couldn't figure out how to break the news?

Jerabaub
Hello, I did not see the Gibson interview either, but to read the media reports of it, the slant is obvious and immediate.

Per the ABC 'Report': When asked if Georgia joined NATO, whether the United States should go to war if the country was again invaded by Russia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help."

What she said it true, NATO allies are expected to come to aid if one of their members is attacked. In reality though, this doesn't happen if history is any indication.

"Palin has no previous foreign policy experience and her comments hewed closely to the McCain camp's established foreign policy positions on former Soviet nations joining NATO, and the threats posed from Islamic terrorists and a nuclear Iran."

"Palin -- whose military experience is limited to her gubernatorial role as commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard, an organization with fewer members than there are citizens in the town of which she was mayor"

"Though seemingly flummoxed by the term, Palin agreed in principle to the "Bush doctrine," or the idea that the United States has the right to preemptively strike another country before first being attacked."

The "Bush Doctrine" is a negative media connotation. Does it matter that she may have been confused as to exactly which reference 'Charlie' was making? I loved her use of 'Charlie'. Put him in his place quickly.

I saw nothing positive in the report. Obviously ABC did not see anything positive either.

She did extremely well. Biden is probably losing sleep worrying about that debate. If not, he should be.

She loves her man
Declarations that "he's my guy" and the man she admires most in the world appeal to many and drives the feminists nuts. Getting along with men, not fighting them reflexively is one key to success.

Also, per my previous post:
Per ABC: "Palin -- whose military experience is limited to her gubernatorial role as commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard, an organization with fewer members than there are citizens in the town of which she was mayor"

Sarah Palin as Governor is Commander of the Alaska National Guard consider this:

Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.

As governor of Alaska , Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden's and certainly by far exceeds Obama's. She's also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security's counterterrorism plans.

Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country's defense. Given Alaska 's proximity to Russia , she may have security clearances we don't even know about.

According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets where National Security is concerned.

She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is.

Can anyone tell me....
how much foreign policy experience Governor William Jefferson Clinton of Arkansas had (other than protesting against America while overseas)???

Nicely Done
I couldn't agree more with your assessment. We need this change in our government. Not the Barak change on changing our taxing policy and increased social programs. I believe John showed a true resolve to try to change the way our government has been operating by choosing Sarah. I have seen this kind of true honesty in a candidate in 40 years. It great.

Palin changes the scenery
One change is that a new term has been forced upon the right wingers. It is "liberal feminists." Up until two weeks ago all feminists were alike, all were bad, all were dykes, all hated men, ate their children for lunch, & kidnapped the family court system, while beating their chests in the jungle.

Then all of a sudden this self-proclaimed
feminist who is a Republican, doesn't look like
a "Bulgarian weight lifter" (I am quoting a
paid TH columnist here - isn't that pathetic),
who actually has and likes her children and even her husband, works full time, shoots a
gun, and who knows what other wonderous things she is all about.

Being a feminist and being married to a feminist who is also smart, beautiful, graceful
as the dancer she was, and who also happens to
love both her kids and me, I have known
this all along. Feminists come in all shapes,
sizes, persuasions, and velocity of argument. But if that were to be acknowledged officially half of the posters on Town Hall would have to find another source of amusement.

And I do not in any way find it amazing that
I have not seen Demosthenes and his ilk for the
last week or two. I guess they decided to lay
low for awhile. Smart move.

So what in heaven's name are they going to
do. Hence - "liberal feminists." They remain
the bad guys while just plain old feminists
stand a chance of being good guys once they
have PROVEN themselves.

SARAH and MSM
Do you want to know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about Sarah’s comments to Charles Gibson? The socialist interviewers and their readers always hear and see what they want from an interview. They also continue to badger all GOP interviewees with the same question phrased in a different style hoping they will finally get their “I gotcha”.
http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2008_09_07-2008_09_13.s html

The top journalists in the nation give us different plays on the “Bush Doctrine”. Sarah was correct to ask for a specific question on the subject. Read more truth about the scam Gibson uses to ask a baiting question that even he cannot answer concerning the “Bush Doctrine” presented by Richard Starr.
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives2/2008/09/021487.php

Anne E. Kornblut. Washington Post reports from Fort Wainwright Alaska with even more distortions about Sarah’s send-off speech to her son and his Infantry Stryker Brigade that departed for Iraq on the 7th anniversary of 9/11 that they would, "defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans." Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard clarifies the truth.
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives2/2008/09/021487.php

I believe the real reason Sarah is being ground up by the media grist mill is her executive experience which is equal to and better than Obama’s and Biden’s. The feminists of the sixties are getting a bit long in tooth and the pretty VP nominee in high heels has them reeling.

Elizabeth Williamson of the WSJ wrote, “She stood before two wall-sized U.S. flags. Flanked by friends and local pols, she stepped to the podium. The crowd, many in flannel shirts and jeans, waved signs reading “Welcome Home,” “Drill Baby Drill,” and even: “You can put lipstick on a community organizer but they’re still a community organizer.”

Juggling five children?
With Track enlisting last year, Ms. Palin and her husband were temporarily down to being responsible for three children. And honestly, high school students don't require the care that younger ones do either. Yes, they can make bad choices, but parents have to start giving older teens gradual freedom. I'm in the middle of this with kids ages 15 to 19.

A few remarks
I have been voting for four decades. I have never seen so much attention paid to a VP
candidate. That in itself tells us a whole lot
about the Presidential candidate. I keep hearing
about the desperation of the left. I think it
is the other way around.

Silver Lion and ClaireSolt: Please read my post
of 09/12 - 1:31 p.m. "the scenery."

Grow up, Silver Lion
Silver Lion.

Claire - Explain how getting along with
your husband makes you a great candidate for
anything political. Besides Hillary stated a
thousand times she was still in love with Bill.
And everyone on this side of the fence called
her a liar. Maybe that works both ways.

Tall Chick - in my opinion, teenagers need MORE
careful watching than younger kids. The
difference is that the younger kids want more
watching, the teenagers do not. I have been
there, done that. My wife never worked full
time while kids lived with us. I waited for
my dream job until they left home also because
my dream job, which I have now, meant being
away from home for weeks at a time. I have
never regretted that.
