Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

LONDON -- More than 700 nude bicyclists pedaled from Hyde Park to Wellington Arch the other day to protest global warming and excessive emissions from automobiles. Their message was better "nude power" than "nuke power."

This was the fourth annual World Naked Bike Ride, with cyclers in 60 cities participating this year. The bikers want to flesh out the pleasures of fresh air cycling and persuade others to enjoy pedal pushing without pedal pushers.

"Bikes and naked bodies harm nobody," one biker told the BBC. That depends, of course, on your aesthetic sense. These were not necessarily the likes of the beautiful nudes on the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum. But we get the point.

Tony Blair has been giving vigorous farewell speeches in preparation for stepping down as prime minister, but anyone who knew London in an earlier day -- I lived here for several memorable years in the 1960s -- senses a country beset with doubts, fears and dark thoughts about what has happened to the culture. The world power is long gone. The royal family has become all too ordinary. Education once hailed for its discipline and rigor is as flabby as some of those exposed bums pedaling past Hyde Park.

A report by the General Teaching Council, an independent regulatory agency appointed by the government, describes children in British schools as unmotivated, intractable and bored. There's plenty of blame to go around, but the prescription ordered by the educationists sounds worse than the ailment: "Let's just stop testing." That's a little like saying to a sick patient that "you're fine as long as we don't take your temperature, your blood pressure and your pulse."

The council wants to abolish standardized tests now mandatory for students aged 7, 11 and 14. The tests are said to be so stressful that psychologists are more and more frequently called on to treat anxiety attacks. Surely these can't be descendants of the English sailors at Trafalgar, of Wellington's legions at Waterloo, or the blokes whose stiff upper lips could not be softened by the Blitz.

Today's teachers don't sound like Mr. Chips, either. They're feeling stress from the pressure to produce students who make high grades on the tests. One teacher under investigation for helping her students cheat on an exam hanged herself.

England's teachers have a problem Americans can recognize -- teaching so narrowly to the test, requiring memorizing facts and dates -- students fail to comprehend what actually happened. When test grades are all, teachers and students conspire to achieve high scores on statistical tables without thinking through complex ideas.

"The range of knowledge and skills that tests assess is very narrow, and to prepare young people for them they need a set of skills that are far broader," says Keith Bartley, chief executive of General Teaching Council, in an interview with the London Observer. That sounds about right, but surely it would be better to change the tests, not abolish them. Our own Scholastic Assessment Tests (SATs), for example, have added an essay question to open a wider sample to assess actual learning.

England, like America, suffers from the consequences of political correctness. What it means to be British is lost in a blush of multiculturalism. After the London Underground bombings in 2005 by three native Englishmen of Pakistani origin and one Jamaican immigrant, all Muslims, the government formed a commission to find a way to develop a greater sense of citizenship. The commissioners came up with one obvious suggestion. Along with learning about Martin Luther King Jr., Mohandas Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, great men all, English schoolchildren should also study the greatness of David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill, and how they led the nation through two world wars.

Themes of British identity are being debated now by Tory and Labor parliamentarians. Gordon Brown, soon to follow Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street, sounds like an old-fashioned Englishman, demanding "British jobs for British people" and rebuking firms that prefer to hire low-paid immigrants to Britons. (Sound familiar?) Others have joined him in proposing a national holiday to celebrate what it means to be British.

David Cameron, the Tory leader, urged Muslims to take pride in Old Blighty, and suggests copying the American model of shared values found in the daily Pledge of Allegiance, the celebration of the Fourth of July and the observance of Thanksgiving Day. Guy Fawkes, celebrated for trying to blow up Parliament two centuries ago, doesn't quite cut it. It's quaintly satisfying to an American to see the mother country looking to the colonies for inspiration.

At the risk of vulgarity
I wonder who decided to post this article right above one titled "Cracks show in Democratic house"?

I am with David Niven on this, who once commented that a man who streaked the Academy Awards was very brave to thus expose his shortcomings to the world.

As for celebrating what is the backbone of your country, we are trying to encourage the Canadians to do the same, but since most of them here in the East are so apathetic that they are all in the bathroom waiting for The Government to come and wipe their heinies, we aren't making much headway.

Exactly what is happening in this country today. It would be politically incorrect of us to expect all those poor illegal aliens to actually assimilate into our culture. We would do well to learn from what's happening in England and pass an immigration bill that actually addresses these issues.

Do the Math
Are British and American schools still teaching mathematics? If so, the British should readily understand that with 200,000 abortions annually they are in the process of committing national suicide. A similar outcome can be predicted for the U.S. except it will take a little longer for the mathematical progression to work. Forget about the war against radical Muslims. N.B. Israel, Great Britain, and the USA: With their high birthrate the Muslims have already won and will inherit the world because potential Israeli, British, and American parents no longer see any value in procreating, instead destroy their progeny. The civilized world will disappear without even a whimper, and history will return with a vengeance as the barbarians take over once again. Not Global Warming, but progeny destruction is the real future disaster that looms.
The Law of Unintended Consequences has not been repealed!

Cushy desk jobs
Those nude bikers probably all have cushy desk jobs and have forgotten about what other jobs are like, or else they are students who don't know any better.

Do these people have any idea how much of a modern economy depends on hauling big and heavy things around? How do you do that with a bike? To make even a little house requires hauling lots of heavy materials to the building site. I don't want to discourage people from riding bikes, but they aren't the solution.

Maybe twenty years of hard labor on the collective farm would make them appreciate some of the advantages our modern era has over earlier eras.

***PLUG ALERT***
A new article will be posted at the Spade later today, check it out when you have a chance!

America HAS an identity
Fields makes a huge and incorrect leap. When any debate in any country transpires into one that sounds like "British jobs for British citizens," or "American jobs for American citizens," this is not a debate about national identity, for Pete's sake. It's an economic debate and there is a good chance it takes place because the government has forgotten or failed to represent the populace.

But, this article is all over the place, and doesn't make any talking points very well. Here is where it gets laughable: "England, like America, suffers from the consequences of political correctness. What it means to be British is lost in a blush of multiculturalism. After the London Underground bombings in 2005 by three native Englishmen of Pakistani origin and one Jamaican immigrant, all Muslims, the government formed a commission to find a way to develop a greater sense of citizenship."

What the heck kind of response is that to attack? Your subway gets bombed and you establish a commission to develop a greater sense of citizenship? If that is what governments do, we should all be ashamed. When a country responds to attack in this manner, political correctness is not the reason. Incompetence is the reason. Rest assured, America is no longer "the colonies," and Britain is no longer "the mother country." Maybe 150 years ago, but not now.

Millions and millions of very different and not-always-in-agreement Americans are now standing together united on one front -- immigration. Anyone who can't see the threads of enormous national identity on this issue isn't looking. They have all the national identity they need. What they need now is a way to get their elected Senate to pay attention and to vote according to their constituents' desires.

WHAT A JOKE!!!! ALGOR, CAN YOU READ??
Ask 100 people to measure the temp. of our earth - and you will get 100 different results.
A half a degree (if true) raise in last few years means mothing. there were and will be
MINUS jumps in the future...

Any backyard varies +/-10 or more degrees on any day...........

Another "minute" detail:
“To assure accuracy, stations (essentially older thermometers in little four-legged wooden sheds or digital thermometers mounted on poles) should be 100 feet from buildings, not placed on hot concrete, etc. But as photos on Watts' site show, the station in Forest Grove, Ore., stands 10 feet from an air-conditioning exhaust vent. In Roseburg, Ore., it's on a rooftop near an AC unit. In Tahoe, Calif., it's next to a drum where trash is burned.”

Nude cycling is about being naked
The nude bike ride is about being naked. It only claims other "protest" reasons because protestors are allowed more freedom than simple naked riders. You can "protest" naked in areas where just being naked would get someone arrested. So the World Nude Bike Ride generally attaches some local "protest" saying or two or whatever political speech some of the individuals want. I don't understand why clothes are a legal requirement anyway. Nobody has ever turned to stone, or been psychologically damaged seeing another human being.

The leap from the World Naked Bike Ride to "multiculturalism" and "diversity" is not made well. Does our author believe that nakedness confronts Islamic immigrants? Does our author believe that naked bike riding is a sign of degenerate liberal times?

I'm a person who believes that the government should protect our borders, defend us from invasion, facilitate commerce, and get off our backs and out of our lives in every other way. What clothes someone wears or doesn't wear should not be a government concern. The World Naked Bike Ride is really protesting oppressive governments that are controlling our lives from cradle to grave. The problem in the UK and the US is that our governments fail utterly at the jobs they are supposed to do, and focuse their energy on police state control of the people.

Naked Bike Riders
Anyone stupid enough to ride a bike naked deserves whatever is likely to happen to them if they should fall off.

nudes vs. nukes
What in Heaven's name does bike riding naked have to do with nuclear energy??? Nuclear energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy. If these "hippies" had a clue they'd know this. If the Goracle had a clue he'd be promoting nuclear energy as well.

Jerseyvet
I recommend "America Alone" by Mark Stein to you. I think you will like it.

Stein discusses the very theme of your post. According to Stein, a minimum birth rate of 2.1 children per woman is required to maintain a culture's population. Of the free western societies, only the US has the minimum rate. All of free Europe is at a birthrate of less than 2.0.

Stein argues that the populations of these countries are maintained only by massive immigration and that much of this immigration comes from the muslim world, which averages more than 3 births per woman.

BTW - the US birthrate is barely at the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman. By aborting over 40 million pregnancies in the last 40 years we have put ourselves in a situation where our population increases only through immigration. And, as you know, immigration is a touchy issue right now.

Bizzi
"If these "hippies" had a clue they'd know this."

They're idiots. They're riding nude because they want attention.

The liberal left of the western world has a history of being its own worst enemy when it comes to energy. They have consistently opposed every form of energy, made it more difficult to produce, clean or otherwise, and then complained that there is not enough energy and the energy we have isn't clean enough.

Morons
These Liberal, Leftover, Hippies are stupid to the point of being comical! Take The Ethanol Debate, Ethanol is Alcohol. To get Ethanol from grain requires some cooking. Natural Gas, Coal or Wood are best for this purpose. WHOOPS! This means you have to either Drill a Natural Gas Well, Dig a Coal Mine or Chop down some Trees! Come on Liberals, which of the 3 fuel sources will it be?

What a Bunch of Morons!

Nude Protesting
Yes, bike riding naked surely helps the Global Warming cause.....It got real nipply outside.

Sorry, couldn't help myself to follow up with a stupid comment for a stupid cause ran by stupid people...

Carry on.

Gotta love teacher unions
I note that this is yet another article that references "teaching to the test" as being a problem. Of course teachers should be teaching towards the test, because they should be testing what they teach. If your students don't understand the material, but are capable of scoring well, then your test has an inadequate level of rigor.

for JFP
JFP writes: "Do these people have any idea how much of a modern economy depends on hauling big and heavy things around?"

Actually, a lot less than it used to.

In the post-industrial economies of America and Britain, what is getting "hauled around" is INFORMATION--like this very Townhall.com blog we're on right now.

The old-style heavy industries are being outsourced to the developing world. These days, China does manufacturing, America does software development.

Even in construction, it's antiquated zoning regulations and building codes that prevent the use of modular, prefabricated housing in many locales. You wouldn't need a zillion trucks and cranes to stick-build a house on its lot; all you need is an assembly line to build the house elsewhere efficiently and have it delivered on just TWO trucks.

As for shopping, I now order most stuff over the Internet and have it delivered to me via UPS. It takes only one UPS truck to service a neighborhood rather than each resident driving his own car to a shopping mall. I have even started ordering some groceries that way.
