Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In October 2005, when President Bush announced his nominee for the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Sandra Day O'Connor, conservatives who had been loyal to the administration rose up in perfectly reasonable fury. Harriet Miers was not their idea of a Supreme Court justice. She was, they noted, intellectually undistinguished, ill-qualified for the job, lacking impeccable conservative credentials and inept in handling basic constitutional questions.

All those things, of course, could also have been said about Sarah Palin. But just as quickly and vigorously as conservatives rejected Miers, they embraced Palin. Even after her bungling performance in the 2008 campaign and her strange decision to resign as governor of Alaska, some of them still do.

"This unusual move might be the right move for her to become president of the United States," insisted William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard. Columnist Jonah Goldberg assured the governor that no matter what, "You are the 'It Girl' of the GOP." National Review editor Jay Nordlinger confessed, "I am an admirer and defender of Palin's. Oh, what the heck: I love the woman."

Why on earth are they infatuated with her? Palin has hardly helped to revive the conservative cause. For all her alleged star power, she did nothing to improve the GOP ticket's fortunes on Election Day. She showed no gift for articulating conservative themes, beyond ridiculing liberals as overeducated, big-city elitists -- a description that applies equally well to most conservative commentators.

In two months on the ticket, she boosted her unfavorable rating from 7 percent to 48 percent, while the unlovable Joe Biden ended up viewed negatively by only 32 percent of Americans. Finally, last week, she gave a pitifully incoherent explanation of why she was stepping down as governor of Alaska with a year and a half left in her term -- which you might think would mortify anyone who put his faith in her.

But it's really not hard to see why Palin inspires such devotion. And I do mean "see." She has one obvious thing going for her that Miers didn't: She's a babe, and she doesn't try to hide it.

As an article in the latest issue of Vanity Fair puts it, Palin "is by far the best-looking woman ever to rise to such heights in national politics." And while that fact doesn't earn her points with me, it obviously does with many other people.

It's hard to exaggerate how valuable a pleasing appearance can be. Numerous studies show that people rated good-looking make more money than those who are not so easy on the eyes. In the modern media age, the same effect holds in politics.

Good looks are a big advantage to male politicians as well. No one would have given the time of day to John Edwards or Mitt Romney if they were short, paunchy and bald. When Texas Republican Sen. Phil Gramm ran for president in 1996, he said, "The real question is whether someone as ugly as I am can be elected." He got his answer.

Palin is a clear rebuttal to the old line that politics is show business for ugly people. Tina Fey, who is pretty enough to make it in Hollywood, marveled after meeting Palin on "Saturday Night Live," "I'll tell you, that lady is five times better-looking than I am."

This may explain why, for all the talk about her as the stirring embodiment of the Walmart-shopping hockey mom, Palin's fans are heavily male. A June poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that her approval rating was 48 percent among men but only 41 percent among women. Females are less susceptible to feminine charms.

Palin is not alone in using her looks to enchant the Republican faithful. Carrie Prejean went from being a runner-up for Miss USA to a conservative heroine because she came out against gay marriage in her pageant interview -- but also because she wears a bikini well. Ann Coulter would be just another rabid pit bull if not for the long hair and short skirts.

Harriet Miers' problem was that she couldn't overcome her deficiencies with sex appeal. When people remain ardent fans of Palin no matter how badly she performs, it's reasonable to wonder what they are thinking. But thinking has nothing to do with it.

Another hit piece
I heard what Sarah Palin said during the election campaign. Perhaps Mr.Chapman was too busy drooling over her to actually hear what she had to say. She very articulately stated that she was pro the United States, against abortion, pro our military, against big government, pro drilling for our own oil, against terrorists(and would be willing to fight them) pro closing our borders, and against closing Gitmo. I think his comment that men were her biggest supporters was off the mark also. I believe women who are strong,love our country, are against abortion, and who are happily married and truly love men also love Sarah with a vengeance. I am one of millions of them.

Response to "Katepatate" & Mr. Chapman
RIGHT ON, Kate!

Mr Chapman, please re-do you research. Check it out with reality. Watch the videos. Read the facts by reading the all the text of all her messages. Talk with people who really know her.

And, most of all, be honest.

Thank you.

Steve, Steve, Steve
In general, I look forward to and enjoy your columns. This one is an exception. I watched Harriet Miers and Sarah Palin is no Harriet Miers.

When did Harriet Miers ever stand up to the corrupt establishment within her own party -- for starters?

And if candidates have to be good looking, how did Al Gore ever get a nomination? Or Hillary Clinton, for that matter?

Uh! UH!
Mr Chapman:

The title of your post was "The Secret Of Palin's Staying Power".

Your text shows that you are utterly incompetent to write a column on that subject. You are just about as far off the mark as it is possible to get.

And by the way -When the Republican party and you are asking for our support in next years' election I will be asking where their and your support for Gov. Palin was when she needed it.

I understand her resignation even if I am saddened by it- but I would CHEER YOURS!!!

Steve
Don't be fooled by Sarah's folksy delivery. She's a sharp woman and women gravitate to her message just as much as men. We conservatives are worried about our country being ravaged by the dim mob of unprincipled elitist punks, old lib dogs and skanky feminazis and have little time to ogle Sarah's looks. She has to lead the Tea Partiers to 2010. The sooner the better. If Alaska's legislature can't stop the nonsense then they can deal with it on their own time and money.

Elitist much?
Sarah Palin speaks to the people that "professional politicians" and "elitist reporters and columnists" don't have one clue about.

Columnists and reporters that fail to look beneath them at the "little people" below will never understand Sarah's popularity OR her staying power.

Don't try to expound on a concept when you won't even bother to understand it yourself.

Normality appeals even more.
It's been quite a long while since I disagreed with a TownHall columnist this severely.

Sarah Palin is a normal woman with good values, who obviously "walks it like she talks it." Beauty helps -- heauty is the main currency that put Obama in the White House -- but normality and decency are Palin's major strengths.

As a national campaigner, Palin is neither practiced nor polished...but I'd bet the rent that that amplifies, not reduces, the appeal of her normality.

Chicago and Corruption--Perfect Together
What's with Chapman? From Illinois, he may be a closet supporter of Barack Obama. Here's an attractive woman who believes in the Right-to-Life movement and practices it, who believes in fiscal integrity, and who believes we need to develop our own energy resources like oil, gas, and new nuclear energy plants.

Chapman, you've got to get a life--and a new career! If you don't understand why millions love and admire Sarah Palin then you really don't have the insight or intelligence to be a nationally syndicated columnist. Oh, I forgot you're from Chicago, Illinois, a state that foisted upon America the greatest, most unqualified presidential candidate in history who is methodically destroying Reagan's City on the Hill.

Seemingly, everything that comes out of Chicago is corrupt, including the intelligence of its columnists as well as its Marxist "bomb throwers."

Agree
...with all posters so far. Chapman demeans all fans of Sarah, who admire her character, the way she lives her life, and everything she stands for.

Misreading Palin's Appeal
By the Republican convention, it was clear the Presidential election would be between dumb and dumber. We had $4.00/gallon gas, and our candidate was still ignoring a decade of global cooling to support the Democrat's war on carbon emission.

Palin's nomination woke a small hope that maybe our national government would give an unbiased examination global climate data, the long range accuracy of computer models, and the actions Democrats had taken over the last three decades to restrict carbon related energy production.

Sarah Palin's continued popularity is a result of the fact that other than Sen. James Inhofe, we don't have a public voice.

Most amazing line in the entire article
"For all her alleged star power, she did nothing to improve the GOP ticket's fortunes on Election Day."

Nothing? You think it was McCain's magnetism that drew them out on election night?

Sarah Palin
Hey Chapman - -you're just continuing the brayinmg from Chicago. Guess what does the braying

Sar-aah!
God bless Sarah Palin! She came out of obscurity with a bang, and scared the liberals to death! Their only alternative was to bash her to death.
She has endured more than anyone should be allowed to. Enough already!

Couldn't Create a Better Americana
Palin is what ALL women in America would want to be, if they would admit it openly. Conservatives would do well to make sure Palin remains a success, instead of being the weak-kneed sissies they usually are.

I suggest checking out this guy, who gives it to Obama and liberals in general, DAILY. http://www.theblacksphere.net. A black conservative who tells it like it is. He is REFRESHING!

His book is http://www.amazon.com/BIG-Black-Lie-Learned-Democrat/dp/06 1530222X and is a PHENOMENAL read! Already up for one award

Man, she realy draws them out,
I'm beginning to think one can tell an awful lot about a pundit's insight by their perspective on Sarah Palin.

Hey, Steve, in an MSNBC interview, regarding her resignation, she used the line, "If I die, I die".

Guess where that's from.

Bingo
..."beyond ridiculing liberals as overeducated, big-city elitists -- a description that applies equally well to most conservative commentators."

Yes it does, doesn't it?

Every time another libertarian/conservative think tank proudly announces they've moved up to an inside-the-Beltway address, I cringe.

I've said it before
I'd give 1/10 of what Sarah Palin has coursing through her veins. Yes, I'm a woman who admires her style! She does it all and quite well I'd say. We desperately need "new" in government and she's just the lady to provide it. TIME FOR A CHANGE -- 2010 -- VOTE OUT ANYONE THAT DOESN'T MEET CONSERVATIVE STANDARDS AND SUPPORT SARAH PALIN. We either get involved or our country is lost!!!!

Chapman
UGH! Not everyone is as free of depth as you.

This whole article is ridiculous!

Palin is a different kind of politician.
She is not a pompous arrogant power-monger like 90% of the politicians in DC. She's far more down-to-earth than almost all of them.

She somewhat attractive for a politician, but she's not anything special.

She believes in limited federal power and individual liberty. Something that is almost non-existant amoung democrats and rare amoung republicans.

She drove the liberals crazy. They can not tolerate a conservative woman being the face of the republican party. She had to be destroyed at all costs. Their attacks on her may slow, but they will never stop as long as Palin appears in public.

I doubt that I would ever vote for her, but she was far better than McCain, Biden or Mr. Obama.

Big govt elitist republicans do not get her, for the same reasons the democrats don't.

Sara
Governor Palin continues to provide "Comic Relief", at a time in American history, when all is not well. If Ms. Palin can be seen as a serious candidate for the American Presidency? Then there are no "Impossibilities" in life. She gives everyone of US "Hope"!!!

MR. CHAPMAN
Although looking for work today is very difficult, I'd suggest you start that process. If you are not up to that prospect, please get your facts straight before you burden educated people with your blah, blah, blah! YOU DO NOT KNOW SARAH PALIN!

ZERO rating, Chapman
You get Sarah about as well as Maureen Dowd, and at least she has an excuse of being an envious, frustrated spinster.

I understood perfectly what Palin said, and I don't blame her. If she retires to private life, or goes on to a higher calling, I wish her well. Is she the savior of the GOP? I don't know but I like her anyway. She thinks like US, and that's what East Coast Elitists like Chapman CANNOT stand.

How dare we common people stand up for what we believe in, and AGAINST the know it all ruling class. You see, they think they're smarter than US, and when proven otherwise, it really torques them off.

Are trolls writing columns now?

“For all her alleged star power, she did nothing to
improve the GOP ticket's fortunes on Election Day.”

Mr. Chapman, can you cite your sources or reasoning
for this obviously false statement?

It is a matter of historical fact that Sarah Palin drew large
crowds and enthusiasm to the lackluster McCain campaign.

If you doubt this, watch her Aug 2008 acceptance speech.

Then watch John McCain’s acceptance speech.
John McCain told us-
“ Stand up! Stand up and fight! Stand up and fight with me!!”
And then HE HIMSELF did NOT fight: “My friends,
you have nothing to fear from an Obama presidency..”

The fault lies with McCain, not with Palin.

The rest of the points in your column
are equally weak.
1 star is more than this deserves.

Critics
Females are more highly critical of other females who are good looking. I have seen other females viciously savage other women who look nice. Little thought is given that the "other woman" might actually have a brain.

Nice looking women are characteristically viewed as being dumb. The better looking they are the more they are perceived to be a bubble head.

If a woman is good looking and successful in a corporation it must be that "she slept her way to the top".

This is not something I read in a study. This is something I have observed first hand.

By the way do you know any good "blonde" jokes?

Tibby

Pathetic
The assertion that Palin has earned a certain measure of admiration and even loyalty from many conservatives simply because she is physically attractive is asinine.

The final paragraph of this article sums up Steve's ridiculous argument, and exposes an obvious counter: Conservatives were wary of Harriet Myers because she was less conservative than they would have liked. Conversely, Palin continues to find support among conservatives despite her missteps in the face of the media's assault and battery simply because we agree with her principles.

I might have been insulted by the suggestion that I, along with other male conservatives, am incapable of rational thought in the face of physical attractiveness. However, Steve's argument is so easily dismantled that I'm only insulted by the fact that he is paid to make his opinion known to the world.

Mr. Chapman . . .
is a BELTWAY INSIDER who will NEVER understand what it is to be an average American. Get off the kool-aid, chapman.
This may disinvite you from the beltway, georgetown cocktail circuit but you will be better for it.

tj from flyover country.

Are you kidding me?
What a ridiculous, shallow, superficial article. That is exactly the way you depict conservatives in this article.

You never mentioned her outstanding rogue record in Alaska.
You never mentioned that she is the emobodiment of all things conservative.
You never mentioned she doesn't just talk the talk, but walks it.

Sarah Palin is popular because she is the real deal - period.

Mind you, looks don't hurt her, but that is hardly the reason she makes such a find representitive of conservatism in America.

You should be banned from writing any more articles after this lamer. It goes beyond the pale.

What a waste of read.

As introductions go....
I had never heard of Steve Chapman before reading this article.

Now, I know why.

Good grief!
I voted for the McCain/Palin ticket because of Palin - not because of McCain who was a terrible candidate. Chapman is as shallow as Liz Hotta Trotta who is also jealous. Quoting from Vanity Fair? I am cancelling my subscription to that rabid lefty magazine. They were better when they were writing about movie stars and their mascara.

I had never heard of Mr Chapman before
So I read a couple of article he wrote in the past, looked at his curriculum vitea, studied his background and now I have reached a judgement on why this article is so slanted. He is a political hack from Chicago who has been told to slander anyone who threatens the Chicago thugs plans to destroy our country.

Aside from that I think he is a nice guy. Get a grip and take Kathleen Parker and the other Quizlings with you as you return to the Huffpost. No wonder the Tribune is bankrupt. One star.

Beauty
Very perceptive! Beauty, both male and female, does have a lot to do with political success. You know, in old times presidential candidates didn't campaign for themselves, perhaps they let their better looking friends do it for them!

Besides Palin's beauty though is her ability to prepare and present excellent political speeches when she puts some effort into it.

Boy, Chappie, you really opened my eyes
Here all the time I thought I admired Sarah Palin for her strength of character, genuine conservative values, and courage to speak out against lord oblama despite mc cains reluctance to slam him during the campaign, and now I see it was just because she's a "babe".
Thanks, dude.

Ten Ways to Spot a RINO

1. Attacks Sarah Palin on nonissues – Steve, guilty as charged.
2. Says it’s time to “move on” from Reagan.
3. Spends like a drunkin’ Democrat on a Warren Buffet budget.
4. Does not talk about high taxes and wealth redistribution as being immoral and unethical.
5. Is for ANY type of “global warming” legislation.
6. Does not believe in developing US energy resources.
7. Does not speak out against government run health care.
8. Does not talk about the importance of State’s rights.
9. Does not talk about the importance of auditing the PRIVATELY HELD Federal Reserve and our banking system.
10. Does not talk about the importance of OBEYING our Constitution as our Founding Fathers wrote it.

What the heck?
This is absolutely the most ridiculous article I've read on TH. Well said by Tony in TX. And you said Palin's press conference was rambling......

Me Too Chappie, Thanks
I was afraid someone had voted for the big O, because of his good looks and TV personallity. But now I know it was because of his vast experience and knowledge that got him elected.

Hard to be nice
Sarah Palin got our attention because she is the first politician since Reagan to actually speak to (and live) conservative values.

I had to edit out multiple paragraphs of this post because of my temptation to call Mr. Chapman names. So let's just leave this at "He's gotten it totally wrong."

Time to press [Submit] before I am tempted again.

Stamp "Unenlightened" on his forehead!
Steve,

Do you really believe that the basis for Sarah Palin's attractiveness to conservatives is her physical appearance? Are you unable to see beyond her looks to recognize that her character, intellegence, morality, and family values are what make her the real deal?

If you truly believe your words, you may need to sign up for some personal therapy pretty soon, as your mind seems locked in some kind of male chauvinist time warp. Hopefully your therapist will help you to understand that a woman's looks don't determine her worth or her ability.

This column did not reflect favorably upon you. Good luck with your "enlightenment".

Have you lost your mind?!?!?
Mr. Chapman:

You just insulted every person who voted for Sarah Palin! She's bright, articulate, conservative to the core, and the best thing that has ever happened to the GOP. None of that has anything to do with the fact that she looks good! Did writer's block catch up with you?

chappie the clown...

Chappie,

If you are trying to put the make on Kathleen Parker, by showing you are in complete agreement with her, I suggest you give it up.

She is so full of hatred she could not give you a second glance.

I have now relegated you to the same bin of trash that she wallows in.

I am puzzled as to why TH has 'clumnists' [ I cannot call them columnists ]
like you, Parker, Gerson and a few others on a supposed Conservative site.

Perhaps they do this, so we, the readers, can see 'Huffypost' and 'Move'em'out'
without having to log on to those sites.

I honored you by giving you one check.

I would have rather given you a minus 10, but TH does not give us that option.

Oh alas and alack, drat, darn, heck, durn burn it, oh phooey.

May poo poo reign in your apartment and rain down on your head.

~~~
I am genuinely outraged, and I am sending a few of my relatives over to gnaw on your furniture, trash your pantry, and leave rat droppings in your refrigerator.
You will learn not to tick off the Rat.
Sarah Palin,
and Michael Jackson have been in the news way too much, and are last week's overkill.
It's time to switch the focus from show business and celebrities to something important.
Interesting that I have yet to see a post about Afghanistant, riots in China, the next demonstrations in Iran, or the t\Trade meetings happening this week.
Too boring for you all? Too much work to actually learn about it?
Republicans need less eccentric wierdo types and more solid, educated, articulate people to represent them.
Moron!
Clearly you've never been to Alaska or tried to stay connected with the Lower 48 from way up north.
Instead of writing this stupid column last night, you should have been watching Greta--she gets it.
I cannot disagree strongly enough
"For all her alleged star power, she did nothing to improve the GOP ticket's fortunes on Election Day."
Huh?? Nothing?? I was only voting for McCain because I saw him as the lesser of the two evils. When Sarah made her debut as VP pick I was suddenly energized. Finally, a candidate that had my values and walked the talk. A true conservative. Obama barely got by with a bare 3% lead in popular vote. It was hardly a mandate from the people. Sarah was one of the factors that closed the gap. Conservatives actually took time to vote because of her. How can you say she did nothing for the GOP with a straight face? Were you hiding out in a cave a the time of the election?
Chapman just doesn't get it
In his own words:
"In two months on the ticket, she boosted her unfavorable rating from 7 percent to 48 percent, while the unlovable Joe Biden ended up viewed negatively by only 32 percent of Americans."
What kind of a naive fool doesn't recognize that this comparison has nothing to do with the respective merits of the two individuals and everything to do with the mainstream media's relentless campaign to tear down Palin and apologize for Biden. And he things it reflects negatively on Palin. Chapman sure is one of those "overeducated, big-city elitists."
Mr. Chapman, please!
"No one would have given the time of day to John Edwards or Mitt Romney if they were short, paunchy and bald."
Putting Mr. Romney in the same sentence as this untalented hack adulterer(so as to smear him. I guess Romney can't count on your vote in 2012) demonstrates your lack of insight and ability to research. Mr. Romney is extremely accomplished both in the private sector and as a public servant.
Your extreme lack of judgement in that matter tends, at least in my mind, to taint any opinion on Mrs. Palin, whom you continuously smear.
One would be led to believe you are one of those elitist, empty conservative commentators you mentioned in this pile of dung you call a journalistic article.
The Real Basis for Palin's Appeal
Sarah Palin is popular among the minority of people who actually agree with her positions (and it is a minority, thank god) because she is a novelty. She's our generation's George Wallace or Ross Perot. The press covers her because she's the flavor of the month. She'll never attract enough support to be more than a marginal candidate, even though like Wallace and Perot she draws large, enthusiastic crowds of supporters.
Think of it this way--when people go to the State Fair, they don't come home talking about the quilt exhibit. They talk about the two-headed calf or the kid who had too many corn dogs and too much Mountain Dew and threw up on himself on the Tilt-a-Whirl.
How many mothers of 5 do you know who wear skirts, stockings, and red leather 3 inch pumps during the week?
Great Article!
I'm a conservative and when Sarah Palin gave her acceptance speech I was thrilled, and even emotional about it. However, as the weeks went on, it was clear to me that she didn't have the ability to put forth anything more than the statements she gave in her first national speech, which she kept regurgitating over and over. I was less and less enchanted with her as the campaign went on, and only voted for McCain/Palin because of McCain. I listened to her resignation speech too, and agree that it was very rambling and incoherent. I hope Palin supporters can see that she can help the GOP in many ways, but being a Presidential candidate in the future is not one of them.
Huh?
Chaspman says:
"For all her alleged star power, she did nothing to improve the GOP ticket's fortunes on Election Day."
Are you kidding? Without Palin on the ticket, McCain might not have gotten 30% of the vote!
The only reason we are seeing so much negative press about her is that the liberals are shaking in their boots thinking that she might be the candidate in 2012.
Steve Chapman You're a Pig.
this article was offensive. I mean after all you didn't get explicit enough. Maybe you could have gone into more detail about her caboose or her ta tas. Perhaps her pouty lips or her well toned thighs.
Cheap shotter that you are,why not spend your ink on some real problems like Hillary's thighs or Obama's scrawny bod? Geesh.Keith O. needs a new writer,think about it.
You are exactly right, Mr. Chapman
I am so glad that someone has finally said it outright: Sarah Palin's approval numbers come predominantly from male Republicans.
In reading through the comments to various articles written about Palin these past couple of weeks, I was struck by how many times it was either stated or implied that women, especially Democratic women, hated Sarah because they are jealous of her good looks.
The reality is that the largest percentage of her supporters are male and it is not difficult to figure out why.
Obviously, Sarah was lying
Of course. It's just ridiculous to imagine that among her friends and allies in the Alaska legislature this year a sarcastic “gee thanks for helping out loyal old McCain” can be heard from time to time as well financed out of state money ensures that no Republican/Conservative programs go anywhere in Alaska. It's just absurd to think that Gov. Palin would care about Alaska and try to get the Soroses of the world out of Alaskan politics.
Everyone I know either (like I) changed his mind and voted for Sen. McCain (D-Ariz) despite his positions or was reassured in her McCain vote because of the selection of Gov. Palin.
If anyone who talks to Gov. Palin sees this humble words please tell her to LOOK AT WHAT THE REPUBLIWHIGS HAVE DONE TO YOU! They are quislings, more dangerous to America than the socialists they help. FORM A CONSERVATIVE AMERICAN PARTY AND RUN! Run for Senate, run for dogcatcher, run for president, but RUN TO DESTROY THE REPUBLIWHIGS BEFORE THEY DESTROY AMERICA!
Sarah Palin
The main reason for her staying power is....The stupidity of the electorate
STEVE CHAPMAN THE IDIOT
It goes without saying that Sarah Palin is attractive. But only an idiot like Steve Chapman would declare that her looks is what keeps her popular. Maybe that's how YOUR mind works, Steve, but real conservatives love her for her conservative positions on issues that matter to us. How insulting that you would assume conservatives look no further than a person's appearance. So I say, speak for yourself, you shallow-minded jerk. No matter what you and the rest of the jerks in the drive-by media say, I will continue to support Sarah Palin as long as she supports my conservative positions. And if she gains 200 pounds and her hair falls out and her teeth rot out, I will still support her for the same reasons. Now why don't you go get a real job.
Sarah Palin
Mr. Chapman sounds like one of the "inside the Beltway" elitist snobs. I am a man, but looks has nothing to do with why I support Sarah Palin. I support her because of her strong stand on Conservative issues and because she does not talk "down" to we the people like so many elitist politicians do these days. She talks "to" us. I don't judge a politician by their race or gender or religion. I just want them to be qualified to do the job and to be honest and ethical and to truly listen to the people who elect them. I also like Sarah because she stood up to the corruption in her state and even in her own party.Now she needs to go to Washington and help clean up the "massive" corruption inside of the Beltway. She is a breath of fresh air for the Conservative movement and I hope she will be our President in 2012.
Dear Clueless
If you think that all (or even most) of what distinguishes Ann Coulter is her looks, you are truly clueless.
I am reserving my opinion on Sarah, but I do want a President who is not affected by the Washington group think that says that we can borrow our way to prosperity.
Sarah Palin
Ms. Palin gave a dynomite acceptance speech. She proved that she can do great teleprompter. From there she began to stumble and fall. In interviews and the debates she proved herself weak on ideas, weak as an extemporaneous speaker and rather sadly disinterested and uninformed about economics, law and world affairs. She proved herself adroit at cliches ('you betcha!') and dodging questions but could not articulate a broad unified vision of governing in America. She proved herself painfully below average on the hustings. It is true she has lived her principles and deserves credit for that. Yet Mr. Chapman is correct. If Eleanor Roosevelt had taken Ms. Palin's place, and taken her words, the campaign would have gone flat immediately rather than enjoying a brief lift in the polls before drifting and stumbling to defeat. Take away Ms. Palin's looks and her ability to deliver good teleprompter and she is painfully below average.
another hate job
Another Palin hate job in TH. There is no secret to Gov. Sarah Palin's 'staying power'! She's one of us. You, Mr. Chapman is not one of us. Jeeeeeeez.
Sarah Palin vs.
Sarah Palin & Harriet Miers is same thought as Sarah Palin & Richard Nixon. Out of the ballpark nonsense. Jeeeeeeez.
Atemely Shows Why She Won't Win
If Sarah appeals to those who prefer to think of America as being divided into people who are "like us" and "not like us" then she's going to stay a marginal candidate, because those are marginal people.
2012
Palin/Beck in 2012
Hey what's your name!
I'll have to look again to see who wrote this column and so I can remember that you're not worth reading. Your logic is flawed, and your statements are not backed up by the facts that you present. Stating that her supporters are heavily male then presenting poll results that indicate a 48 vs 41% difference in approval ratings between the two genders is hardly indicative of sex appeal being the reason for a mere 7% difference in a poll. (What is the statistical significance of this 7% difference) The poll did not delve into why individuals approved or disapproved of her and your efforts to assign those reasons seem extremely shallow. The reason why I admire her (unlike yourself I don't claim to know why someone else likes her) is because she has some integrity. She follows her beliefs and works to bring about results. She appears to place the needs of her state and country above the desires of herself. This explains to me why she resigned, and why I would vote for her should I have the chance. You need to get over yourself. You really aren't as smart as you think you are.
Shallow
I generally do not post comments but could not let this one go. Let me start by saying that I am surprised that this would be seen fit to be on Townhall. more importantly I think that this article says a lot more about the author than it does about Sarah Palin. Clearly Mr. Chapman is blinded by Sarah Palin's good looks and can not get beyond that to see why so many people support her. It is you Mr. Chapman that has the problem here, you are the one who can be seen as being shallow.
Brutus
"Take away Ms. Palin's looks and her ability to deliver good teleprompter and she is painfully below average. "
Sounds a lot like our current president, except replace the "Ms Palin's looks" with Mr Obama's skin color.
Article
This article was vapid, insipid, and some other word that ends with "pid"............oh yeah, that's it: stupid!
The Meme Attacks continue
The idiot-class continues to throw everything at Sarah like throwing spaghetti on the wall to see what sticks. Once the spaghetti hits the wall, then whatever "sticks" becomes the meme--something repeated over and over by the intelligensia until the proles accept it as truth. The Soviets used this approach as do our Dems.
You, sir, are obviously a member of this idiot class. Either you are a full-fledged member or you are so clueless why we "proles" love Sarah that you ought to be. Either way, elitist, out of touch, idiots like you belong to the pages of Newsweek or tompaine.com. Whether or not the editors of TH.com have the good sense to remove you from this site, I've read your last column.
I welcome substantive criticism of any potential, political leader. These pithy arguments lack any substance and diminish this web site. The fact that elites like you attack Sarah in this way only makes me more sure that she's the leader for me. Please go away.
idiotic
the only word to describe this drivel. As another poster said, 1 star is too much. I voted for Palin due to the fact she was the only conservative anywhere to be seen. She could have been as troll-like as Kerry and I still would have done so.
aliens!!!!!
Have put Kathleen Parker's brain into Steve Chapman's head. I don't think a SCOTUS, a life appointment is equivelant to POTUS.
Brutus
Barack Obama
Mr. Obama gave a dynomite acceptance speech. He proved that he can do great teleprompter. From there he began to stumble and fall. In interviews and the debates he proved himself weak on ideas, weak as an extemporaneous speaker and rather sadly disinterested and uninformed about economics, law and world affairs. He proved himself adroit at cliches ('hope and change!') and dodging questions but could not articulate a broad unified vision of governing in America. He proved himself painfully below average on the hustings ..... Take away Mr. Obama's race and his ability to deliver good teleprompter and he is painfully below average.
Fixed it for you.
Chapman
Everything you had to say about Palin, you must have been looking in the miror.
Or maybe you were listening to Joe Biden, and somehow got confused.
Or Urkle without his teleprompter.
Normal personalities understand Palin
All along, Palin has said she puts her family and Alaska first. Married to a commercial fisherman, she is not wealthy. She owes $500,000 in legal bills for fighting bogus ethics charges, which take up an inordinate amount of her time, leaving her with little time for her family and Alaska. Given her stated values, resignation is the logical step, especially since the Lt. Governor is a proven conservative. Not hard to figure, and utterly consistent with her long-stated priniples.
Such a step is unthinkable to career pols like Robert Byrd and Arlen Specter, whose psychological identity depends on their status as U.S. Senators. Such pathological self-aggrandizement seems normal to someone like Chapman, who is unable to conceive of a sense of duty to family and community.
That's the problem with the elites and why the conservative base understands and likes Palin.
PALIN'S LOOKS DON'T APPEAL TO CHAPMAN
.....I'll bet he thinks JOHN EDWARDS was a cutie .....COLOSSUS
Chapman and Parker
I am not a huge Palin supporter as a politician. I do like her very much as a person (from what I can see). Articles like this are remarkably shallow, however. Chapman and Parker must write for each other, because neither of them are particularly insightful or particularly conservative. Palin was one of the only ones who consistently espoused conservative principles. She was also treated very unfairly by the liberal media. When people perceive someone from "their group" being attacked unfairly, it tends to encourage support as opposed to discouraging it. I am sure the fact that Ms. Palin is attractive is helpful to her. However, this article is just another example of someone who dislikes Sarah Palin taking an opportunity to critique....probably because of perceived class differences. I am sure Mr. Chapman thinks he is better than Governor Palin, although I have not been terribly impressed with him.
GO SARAH
Liberals, “moderates”, and RINO’s, say that Sarah Palin “Quit” when she resigned from the Governorship of Alaska for a number of personal reasons, and that it was a big mistake for her to do so.
Sarah was the most-qualified candidate in 2008, and was stabbed in the back by McCain and the RINO Party. She is the most honorable person who can run for public office in the country. She will not run as the Governor of Alaska, and will not collect a salary from the People of Alaska. She will not be charging one cent in expenses to the state or the nation.
Barack Obamination ran for President while he was supposed to be working as the Senator from Illinois. Most of his term was spent campaigning, and the People of Illinois were not represented in the Senate. All this time he was collecting Senatorial pay and benefits and racking up expenses for the Senate.
Hanoi John Kerry ran for President as the Senator from MA, and collected Senatorial pay and benefits, even though his wife’s $5,000,000 annual stipend from Heinz Foods could have sustained him throughout the campaign. He also left the people unrepresented in the Senate while he campaigned.
Sarah Palin has refused to force her constituents to support her while campaigning for whatever job she may seek. The State of Alaska will be governed by the new Governor who trained as Lt. Governor. Again, Sarah is the most honorable person on the political scene today. We need many more Honest Conservatives to run for national office. The blueblood, country club elites, and RINO’s should be forced out of the GOP and run as the liberal Democ-rats they are, and be replaced with Authentic Conservatives.
Election Farce
The 2008 Presidential Election was a farce. It was not between a Democrat Party candidate and a Republican Party candidate. It was between a CPA (Communist Party of America) member and a RINO (Republican In Name Only). The RINO candidate was chosen by the CPA because he had military experience, and their anointed CPA candidate didn’t. The RINO candidate was nominated by Democrat voters in states with open primaries where they could use crossover votes to select the GOP candidate before Republican voters had chance to vote for their choice.
The big mistake was in the selection of the VP candidate for the RINO Party. Sarah Palin was the most qualified, and exciting candidate in the campaign, including all the members of Congress in line for the Presidency. As soon as they realized their mistake, the CPA sent out the attack dogs to vilify Palin whenever and wherever possible. The RINO Party put her in the crosshairs of the CPA wherever and whenever they could.
The RINO Party candidate campaigned as a RINO, not as a Republican. Whenever possible, the RINO Party candidate praised the CPA candidate, and crossed over to the CPA whenever possible. He had established a record in Congress as a RINO, not as a Republican.
CPA members of Congress deliberately caused the national economy to go into the worst recession in decades and blamed the RINO Party. The RINO Party candidate happily accepted the blame.
The CPA spent as much campaign money as possible on the CPA candidate; while the RINO Party spent as little as possible on their candidate. This election was like a soccer game where the net at one end of the field was one foot larger than the ball diameter, and the net at the other end was ten feet high and as long as the field was wide.
After deliberately losing the election, the RINO Party candidate is praising and kissing the a@@ of the CPA candidate.
Libs just don't get it.
What RINOs and libs don't understand about Palin is that she is real. She had genuinely humble beginnings in the rugged and potentially unforgiving state of Alaska. She wasn't like the pretentious and smarmy Walter Mittys of her opponents who feign heroism amidst hard providences. She lived it out before us.
She is about God, family, country, guns & guts; things that are held in contempt and irrelevant to the elites and glitterati. She came from among hoi polloi. She went to a small college and not an snobbish Ivy League school. She is a commoner with a Christian world view. That is the sum and total of why they hate her. Granted she was almost ready for the presidency but not quite, in my opinion. But nothing that could not be remedied by a couple years as VP. She is like a gold nugget who needs a little more refinement. She is like fresh Alaskan snow-melt amidst the putrid waters of the aristocracy. One thing's for certain, she was far more qualified than the demagogue and cadre of clowns who corrently occupy the Whitehouse or even her running-mate. She was only running for VP, much less president. As for Joe Biden, one can scarecly mention his name without snickering. As a Democrat senator said, "Joe tends to say a lot of stupid things." Who in their right mind, and with a straight face, could say that this boob is her equal?
Much ado was made about JFK and Obama's looks as a positive. With Palin, it is used against her as a bludgeon to abuse both her and her supporters. Sexism is alive & well with libs and RINOs.
Steve Chapman
confirms the depth of his intellect. I would judge it is just a little above 1/4 inch.
Steve have you met Kathleen
Steve Chapman have you met Kathleen Parker?
I don't understand your (or KP's) antipathy for Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin didn't add anything to the ticket? Do you think we went to the poles to vote for a man responsible for one of the worst pieces of legislation in our history. McCain/Feingold abriged my freedom of speech and I was seriously contemplating a third party candidate.
Why don't you and KP tell us the reasons you dislike Palin... instead of hiding behind generalities (without backup)!
It has nothing to do with sex appeal
Chapman and the other elites who run the GOP just don't get it, do they. What an idiot he is. There is nothing else to be said as all of you have said it well here and in other posts covering numerous columns here on TH.
Elbert
Excellent throughout! Well stated.
Another useful idiot shows his colors!
After I read Chapman's column, I paused and said to myself, "And he thinks SARAH PALIN was rambling and incoherent?!?" I had to re-read that mess a couple of times to follow his thoughts, if that's what they were.
The bottom line is: Sarah Palin is still a free citizen (that is until BHO sends her to a re-education camp) and she can do whatever she wants. If she doesn't want to be governor anymore, that's her choice--whatever the reasons. We don't need pointy-headed intellectuals telling us it was "strange" or "wrong" or she's a quitter.
If she wants to kill caribou bare handed in a bikini, she should be able to...wait a minute, I need to get mental picture of that...
Palin Appeal
Being good looking definitely helps but Palin's appeal to many goes far beyond her beauty. She is a down-to-earth wife and mother who comes from humble roots and who has worked hard to get where she is. And she does have charisma.
I think that liberals perceive her as a threat because in her looks she doesn't fit their profile.
I heard a few commentators recently who said that liberal men and women look down on her because she reminds them of the high school head cheerleader they couldn't get a date with back then because she was already dating the high school football quarterback. Thus she represents the fantasy they couldn't fulfill then or now.
I know there is more to it than that but when I look at David Letterman, Keith Olbermann, Chris Mathews and other liberal male talking heads, I have to wonder if they looked that "geeky" in high school. Food for thought.
Sarah Palin
Come on Steve -
Where were you during the election?
Palin did not bungle - she was bludgeoned by rabid, cruel, mean spirited and determined media. Admit it, the media was intent on crushing her AT ANY COST - and they gave Obama a simple pass on the most egregious and stupid blunders imaginable.
A lot of tainted money and a determinedly biased media (plus ACORN’s illegal work) cost Palin the election, not anything she did or did not do!
N'est pas?
Forgive Us! Please!
As a native Chicagoan, I must say B.O. and Chapman are covering us in shame. So what if CHI is corrupt. It's just the way things are. Isn't Blago just an adorable guy? Didn't he give us a lot of laughs? We thought CHI politics cute as long as it was hermetically sealed within the Chicago area. If you didn't like it, you could leave. Now it's gotten out. It's kinda like the elegant and demure lady at the prayer meeting who audibly let one slip. Yes these foul gas bags exist, but they were never intended to get out; especially in an audible manner. I am absolutely red-faced.
Interesting twist of perception
As a WOMAN, I too am completely "enamoured" of Mrs. Palin - I'm a fan, an admirer.
From her first speeches, her incredibly straight talk was a refreshing relief from the tortured, pandering rhetoric that littered the campaign landscape.
You say Sarah "has hardly helped to revive the conservative cause" - in what rock (or beltway) have you been hiding? Out here in the real world, Sarah, Glenn Beck et al have given us hope that someone can pursue and articulate the truth.
She "did nothing to improve GOP fortunes on Election Day". Actually, more of us bothered to vote BECAUSE of her !
"... no gift for articulating conservative themes" Perhaps you can't recognize a conservative theme on a grass roots level - individual liberty, for instance. She has consistently articulated my sentiments with unmistakeable clarity.
Her "pitifully incoherent expanation" was a breathtaking masterpiece of cramming a ton of information into the brief time she knew she would have before the media's short attention span cut her into sound bytes. And she did it without a teleprompter, with hardly any recourse to her notes !! The only way I can comprehend your INcomprehension is that you (and apparently a majority of the media) lack the ability to follow a complex train of thought, or lacked the patience to pay attention for the entire 17 minutes of her announcement.
The general public, and notably Sarah Palin's fans, have no such handicaps.
she'll get my vote
Sarah recently met the highest qualification for becoming our president. She proved to me at least, that she doesn't suffer fools gladly. Letting David Letterman have it squarely, she served him a can of kick-@ss;
That's something should not surprise us at all. This lady thins out wolf packs with a high-powered rifle. Added to her youthful great looks, the most opportune of times, there's wonderful things ahead for our GOP.
Deja Vu
The more things change, the more they stay the same. How many times have we heard that a successful woman must have gotten where she is because she "slept her way to the top"? What sexist garbage.
Steve Chapman must not have read Douglas MacKinnon's column of July 7, else he wouldn't have been so quick to reveal his deep-seated insecurities:
"Seriously, look at the "men" who belittle Palin on a regular basis. For the most part, they fit the description of "the pencil-neck geek" from high school. Are they now trying to make Palin pay for their long-ago inadequacies?"
Jilted for the prom Mr Chapman?
Two problems that I saw with the election - 1) McCain wasn't enough different from a Democrat to win on his own. 2) Palin could not get a straight deal from anyone in the media. Therefore, not enough people got/are getting any straight story on Palin from where they get their news.
What people run Palin down for has nothing to do with her successes or failures in political office. It is all the personal things that your article bought into.
Hillary did well, in spite of her appearance and, to me, shrill voice and demeanor. So looks are not the only thing that works in the real world. Maybe in yours.
This article reads like screed from someone who is reminded of the girl that jilted them for the prom, or somewhere. I hope that is not what is behind it, because I generally enjoy reading your articles.
Another mis-informed opinion
Why is it that liberals seem to think only with their emotions and cannot use their rational part of their brain before engaging their mouth. The first thing they look at/feel is race or sex. That is the last thing to consider when forming an opinion about a politician. Sarah is my governor, at least for a short time longer, and I have watched her, listened to her, and observed her for as long as she has been a politician. She is one of the few politicians who is true to her beliefs and will take on the corrupt politicians no matter what party they ascribe to. Sure she is attractive but her real attraction is that she will act on her core principles and not on what "experts" tell her what is best for her future. She is no quitter and is a tough adversary, so don't count this woman out. She is a real breath of fresh air.
Another Mis-infomed Opinion
40 Mile Phil says "Why is it that liberals seem to think only with their emotions and cannot use their rational part of their brain before engaging their mouth. The first thing they look at/feel is race or sex."
Another mis-informed opinion...
Wow! Sexist pig!
Unbelievable...This is why I hope Sarah runs as an independent. There is no place for a strong, attractive and NORMAL female in the Republican party. In case you didn't figure it out yet mister, PTA moms are already running the world and we certainly can do a better job than Bush or Obama. In fact, I'll bet Barbara, Laura, and yes, even Hillary - I'm not so strongly biased. If you have a mother, this article is an insult to her. You need to apologize.
Sarah has changed the definition of "feminine mystique." All the bitter, man-hating feminist liberals have ruined this country. There are real woman - normal moms, doing the right thing, working, raising children, balancing budgets, supporting their husbands, taking care of their parents and HAPPY. That's what really kills you, she's pretty, happy and unapologetic about it.
Of course she or any other of my PTA sisters could run the whole darn country. You betcha!! MOMS unite and let's get rid of these "bullies" and "know-it-alls" on the left and the right. Time to put them all in TIME OUT!
Palin’s Secret
Palin’s Secret
Palin’s appeal is her sincerity. People sense that she really believes what she is saying.
What frightens the godless liberal left is that she is a Christian who practices what she preaches and who is not afraid to offend those who are opposed to her Christian beliefs and conservative agenda.
Her good looks are secondary and would mean nothing if she lacked her basic sincerity and honesty.
Palin is the Best American EVER
Palin showed in the 2008 election that she is the smartest, most beautiful, most fertile and bester politician in the entire planet, excluded those unAmerican, less proAmerican parts of the country of Africa! and democracy, ((*FREEDOM*)), the Troops, and pro-American, also.
She is just so darn-tooting qualified to be the leader of the ((*GREATEST COUNTRY EVER*)), also, that I'm willing to sell my trailer, divorce my cousin, and go Washington to help her get elected, and too, also.
Fourthlyish, she is the bestest speaker ever, also, and as evidencing by her Quittin' Speech last FRIDAY.
To use a basketball analogy: When I dribble a basketball, also and too, then shoot the basketball, I shoot to win!, and also, it's about country! and the full court press, and not about, also, the liberal elite media, with they're educations and knowledgeables, also, and too. When it's time to quit in the 3rd quarter, a winner passes the ball, then quits, then also leaves the game so that others can win, also, for the Troops, smaller government, and national security, and tax cuts, also.
Those pointed headed smart-i-pants I will never understand, also, it's about country! and basketball, and I'm not a dead fish! also, hell yeah!
((*GOTTA PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST*)).
I quit.
Thanks, also.
Sarah's Resignation is a Good Filter
I'm building a list of "conservative" writers that I won't bother reading any more based on how they react to her resignation. You've just earned a spot on that list, Mr. Chapman. This was one of the stupidest articles I've read all week - and there have been some really stupid articles this week. Bye-bye Chappie - Townhall should dump you, too. It's highly insulting to TH's readers to say that we vote based on looks....that's like saying we'd vote for someone because he was black.....what? You did??? Well, that's not hard to belive...so long, sucka.
I will donate to Sarah Palin
to help pay her bills!
Mr. Chapman, your story deserves only one half of a star - for attempting to lure your readers with Palin's name.
Meaning of expression "Staying power"
Dear participants of the discussion, esteemed Steve Chapman !
Have you ever heard or read an e-mail with advertisement of substances with the function of "Viagra" of "Cialis" ?
The expression "Staying power" has there very definite meaning, quite different from how it is used in this article.
To the extent you wish Mrs. Palin good (I do), you better choose some other combination of words.
Your F.r.
Aw, Shucks !
Reply #91:
I am guilty of being one o'them dumb hicks you so meticulously bash in your parody of Palin's admirers.
Wow ! It is an unsurpassed specimen of supercilious snobbery !
Question; Do you account yourself a fair-minded thinker who is against discrimination?
'Cuz there's a boatload o' bigotry on display!
Myopic
Chapman's myopic view of what attracts every day Americans to Sarah Palin is staggering to say the least. Did you catch her speech at the convention Steve? Oh, you know, the one without the teleprompter that connected with so many and actually caused excitment amongst conservatives despite Mc Cain.
Melanie
"I'm building a list of "conservative" writers that I won't bother reading any more based on how they react to her resignation. You've just earned a spot on that list, Mr. Chapman."
You are the perfect example of what is wrong with conservatives - you pretend to be in favor od "freedom of speech" and the free exchange of ideas, but God help the conservative who disagrees with you, even slightly. TH columnists who present opposing views receive death threats, poison pen mail, and hate rants by the thousands when they so much lift one toe from the party line.
This explains why the world sees conservatives as parochial, limited, fact-phobic hysterics who do what they can to fortify the conservative echo-chamber. You spend so much energy parroting each other, it would be useful to divert a little of that hyper-vigilance to honestly question your own assumptions.
What is going to do Palin is is people exactly like you, the kind of person liberals and indpendents are REALLY afraid of.
Clueless in Chicago
A stunning display of ignorance even by the standards set by Chicago's head in the sand press. Chapman obviously has no understanding of Sarah Palin's appeal. Why is his column even appearing in Townhall? He sounds like an Obamaniac plant trying to convince readers he actually has a clue. No Steve, sorry to burst your overblown bubble but Gov Palin's appeal is far from esthetic alone.
The frequent assumption that Gov Palin is simply a matinee idol and therefore to be despised reminds me of high school girls who "hate" the attractive cheerleader who's dating the football hero and on the Honor Roll. It's simply envy of someone who seems to have it all....a brain, a beautiful family, the love of friends and an amazing ability to communicate with the American people. We need more like her to revive the Conservative movement.
It just occurred to me
Palin's "Department of Law" may exist after all; in that "real America" she talks about, you know, the one reserved for people who adore her. (which is the only price of admission, it turns out.)
Looks like Mr. Chapman
will become the latest conservative columnist to be villified for speaking the truth (see Parker). Good luck.
@BeeVee, #97
Someone says "Based upon your article, Mr. Op-Ed person, I'm not going to read any more of your stuff", which you equate to "TH columnists who present opposing views receive death threats, poison pen mail, and hate rants by the thousands when they so much lift one toe from the party line."
Does your forehead hurt? From your knee jerking that hard I mean. What color is the sky in your world?
PALIN WON'T GO ON FOREIGN SOIL
.....AND APOLOGIZE FOR AMERICA ...
.....That's why she'll clean OBAMA'S CLOCK when the folks get wise to the Manchurian Candidate .....COLOSSUS
Approval Rating
"...her approval rating was 48 percent among men but only 41 percent among women."
Wow what an astounding disparity! You've got to be kidding with that statistic. First off, that's not a huge gap, secondly republicans/conservatives in general tend to be more men. That stat does nothing to advance your theory that being attractive is her only reason for popularity. By that reasoning all dems would have to do is run Angelina Jolie and she would win by a landslide.
Chapman attacks Sarah, ?
Sarah Palin is THE reason I even bothered to vote on election day. "Did nothing for the GOP"?, indeed.
Chapman doesn't get it about Sarah Palin, and so now can be chalked up as part of the problem with this country. This column insults conservative men into liking Sarah Palin based on sex appeal and hormones. This column insults conservative women too. Chapman, spare us the elitism.
Most of us conservatives, men and women, have more than adequate control over our libido, and are smart, too. Sorry, Chapman, your dog don't hunt. I don't have to take the insults, so sayonara. Won't bother reading your column anymore after this trash. Trying to get an appearance on PMSNBC or CNN?
VeeDee
"You are the perfect example of what is wrong with conservatives - you pretend to be in favor od "freedom of speech" and the free exchange of ideas, but God help the conservative who disagrees with you, even slightly"
Wow, is this ever a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Robert
The point here is not the truth of falsity. We are dealing with opinions, that were the stuff of the article and the diatribes against Palin. Your opinion will be truth to you.
The attacks against Palin, and for that matter Prejean and Coulter were primarily ad hominem. They dealt with things taken out of context and the way she talked. That is where the article failed.
Had the same approach been applied to Obama, he would look equally foolish.
The article dealt with, and many of the responses deal with, opinions and not with facts of her true accomplishments or failures.
Or falsity -
sorry for the typo.
And if not
"Wow, is this ever a case of the pot calling the kettle black. "
Really?
Then I'm sure you can provide even one instance of a high profile Democrat getting death threats from other demos when they have taken an unpopular position.
Thought not.
Ok Plano
All those ridiculously overpaid, brilliant Harvard and other ivy league thinkers have done a great job with the economy. They continue to sink it even further. They are not even smart enough to figure out how to pay their taxes properly...using Turbo Tax - duh. I'm afraid Harvard is rather lacking in Economics classes but you are entitled to your vote.
oops forgot
all those brilliant minds in Congress...great job too!!!
Sarah Palin
Only got support because she is attractive? What kind of Harvard weeney are you? What state have you been elected governor of Mr Chapman. I noticed you graduated from Harvard as did I, what does that make you? Are you somehow a superior being who can deride all of the millions of Americans who voted for Sarah Palin, not because they believed in her but only because they thought she was attractive. Maybe just maybe there is a reason why tens of thousands of people bother to stop what they are doing and flock to her rallies and why millions of Americans have given her their support. Maybe that is a reason greater than just the fact that she is attractive, maybe it is because they see in her character a leader who can help the people of this country regain the control of their nation. Your criticism of her and her supporters is a reflection on your own shallowness. Elitism and self delusion go together, maybe it is a time for you to take stock of your own failings and either stop pontificating or at least have the decency to pay some modicum of respect to your intended audience.
Stevie boy are you joking?
Without Palin the gang of fourteen, amnestier, la raza (the race)lover, first ammendment restricter, cap and tax promoter, tax cut derider, state media darling, McCain, would have lost 49 states.
Everytime Palin energized conservatives McCain did something dumb. He still garnered 46% of the vote thanks to Palin.
If you wore those goofy spectacles that charlie gibson wears you'ld be looking down your nose at her too. Guess what, you are looking down your nose at many, many, of us as well.
Get out once in a while dipwick.
PIANO ROLL
Sarah will go on to be president, and Dave Letterputz can insult her every night.
Since I do not watch the putz, and no one else except putzes like you do either, we can consider his @ss kicked.
My point went over your head, I see. All it was, is Sarah doesn't suffer fools gladly. We need that kind of no-nonsense president.
Your Funky Shineboy who suddenly finds himself an executive suffers fools to serve in strategic positions throughout his Funky Administration. Tax dodgers, racketeers, abortion peddlers, and that wierd Lady Macbeth of his, Michelle.
You liken Cool Anne to a mantis, and maybe she is. Michelle walks like an ostrich with prolapsed innards; buys weird clothes and hates her country.
You can see then, why we appreciate Sarah Palin. We would never trade our Gold for your Teflon.
Weird
At least we are finding out who actually listens to politicians. I know many people who would have stayed home instead of voted, and many who would have flipped the R ticket.
I'm looking forward to her unleashed. Maybe she could hedd the RNC or start a conservative party.
BeeVee
Alaska has a Department of Law. It took me three seconds on google to find it.
The more you babble about it, the more of an idiot you look like.
Why don't you ask Obama how many states there are, or Biden to count letters in a word.
You Do Not Understand This, Mr. Chapman
The governor of my state, Mrs. Granholm, is at least as good looking as Mrs. Palin, and I would never vote for her.
Mrs. Palin HAS supported conservative principles, such as sanctity of life, freedom of religion, and less government intrusion.
It escapes me why some Republicans are as afraid of her as Democrats.
Sarah needs her own party!
Sarah walks her talk, and the more the liberal AND conservative pundits try to over-analyze her, criticize her or admit they like her because she's cute, the more the "base" loves her.
I'm hoping she becomes the leader of a third party in 2012, I think she'd win -despite the advice of Michael Medved and many other commentators who are convinced she "blew it".
I'm sick of the RINO's and from what I can tell, that's all that's left out there. Cute or not, I'm a former Republican precinct member and middle aged married mom who thinks she can save the USA...and there are a lot more gals like me.
Repubs and Dems, go fight among yourselves in the corner and let this gal do the job the rest of you haven't proven man enough to do right.
Tort reform Palin
Nobody is better suited than Palin to speak out in favor of tort reform. Lawyers are a big part of the problem with this country and we need to cut off their oxygen. When someone files a frivolous lawsuit and loses, there should be a price to pay.
Schnoodler
"Sarah walks her talk, and the more the liberal AND conservative pundits try to over-analyze her, criticize her or admit they like her because she's cute, the more the "base" loves her."
Great. She'll garner 15% of the vote.
"I'm hoping she becomes the leader of a third party in 2012, I think she'd win -despite the advice of Michael Medved and many other commentators who are convinced she "blew it"."
Even better. She'll split the dumb-dumb vote and Obama will win by 30 points. Ha - using Palin and "blew it" in the same sentence.
"Cute or not, I'm a former Republican precinct member and middle aged married mom who thinks she can save the USA...and there are a lot more gals like me."
Save the USA?!?!? More like quit have way through the job.
"Repubs and Dems, go fight among yourselves in the corner and let this gal do the job the rest of you haven't proven man enough to do right."
Perfect, like I said, split the stupid person vote and Obama won't even have to campaign.
Send Chapman, Parker and Deb Saunders
To the Huffington Post where they belong with turds like Hal Donahue Alec Baldwin, Gavin Newsome, Nancy Pelousi and Arriana Huffington.
Chapman what an idiot!!!!!!!!
I think he must be carrying a crush for Michele Obama
What is a real babe?
Another example of what so many conservatives aspire to. It reminds me of all the evangelical 'babes' out there who flaunt several layers of make up and plenty of cleavage. How about flaunting brains? To me, that's a requirement for babe-dom. Palin is not a babe to people with higher IQ's. Well, with the exception of those who are shallow and happen to be somewhat intelligent.
Sorry, Baradiel
"Alaska has a Department of Law. It took me three seconds on google to find it."
When your intellectual superior, Sarah Palin, referred to the Department of Law she was talking about the FEDERAL government, and why should would be protected from ethics complaints if she were president.
Take another three minutes and google FEDERAL government vs. STATE government.
Schnoodler
"I'm hoping she becomes the leader of a third party in 2012,"
Oh, so am I. More than you can possibly know.
Piano
"Didn't she say the Department of Law up there in Washington, also, too, there?"
Actually, she did. I googled it and found it in three seconds.
Wink.
Hey Instinctive Gesture of Reciprocal..
You listen to the media too much, both sides. I think there would be plenty of independents who voted for Obama that would welcome a third party in 2012.
In case you haven't noticed, the Repubs and Dems have gotten us into what will surely be one of the worst economic messes this country has ever seen, and at this point I don't trust any of the "inbreds" (or maybe "in-beds?) to get us out.
So if either party is serious about being at the helm at 2012, they'd damn well better get their heads screwed back on and get out the pry-bars to remove the lobbyists, banks, and who knows who else out of their behinds, because Sarah is who many of us will be holding them up to.
I suppose it depends on what your definition of "is" is....You trolls sure love to poop where you eat. Isn't there another sandbox in which you should go play?
Do you realize how unremarkable you are? I believe you said you have been stalking (my word) TH for about a month and gave us the standard,...you guys are homophobic, xenophobic, snake handling, etc. etc. blah blah blah....we heard it all before. Why don't you step out of the mold and think for yourself? You can do it Plano, I know you can.
I'm not saying you should agree with everything you read here. Fire away if you must. But don't use the same invectives we've all heard a zillion times over. Get a Thesaurus. Get a perspective. Get away from yourself. Do you know how boring and predictable you are? You haven't said one thing on any of these threads in any manner different than we have seen a zillion times over. But I repeat myself. See, it's boring and tedious isn't it? And, you will persuade no one if you persist down your current worn to the thread path.
Step out of the box, breathe the fresh air and go for it. You are more than likely way to young to be as stale as you are now. It's tragic, it really is.
You don't know enough about me to make any of those ridiculous accusations. The reason most people don't bother denying the things you accuse them of if because they probably think you are not worth their time.
I can't go bake a cake and greet my husband because he died of cancer in April. I have cancer myself and will leave our only child without parents at a very young age. So, I'm sorry I tried to engage a jerk like you in the first place. I only did it out of kindness and caring in the first place, but I really don't expect you to really understand that because I doubt that you do any of the things that you suggested I do. I would also bet that I have done way more helpful work in the community than you have. I just don't like to cram it down people's throats like you do.
I will not waste my time on you again.
Furthermore, I doubt that you give a rat's a
I mean he cannot actually mean any of this. I mean no one can actually be that out of touch to think her appeal is based on her looks.
Misplaced moral priorities
Those who are good to the bad will be bad to the good.
So much time/energy wasted on hating Palin...
http://robbymoeller.blogspot.com/2009/07/misplaced-moral-pr iorities.html
Sigh
It is interesting how some people love to hone in on a couple of Palin's inartful phrases or mis-steps while overlooking the huge number Obama has made.
57 states? What's a few states between friends?
Hey USSR, have a BUTTON to push! (Don't bother reading it...)
Oh, Prime Minister, here are some DVD's! I know they'll work in the U.K.! (By the way, here's that dusty old bust of some fat guy... And, would you mind putting this IPod on the Queen's desk? Nah, no need for a card...as soon as she plugs it in, she'll know who it's from...)
(If only he could speak "Austrian," he might be better able to communicate with those Austrians...)
Hey, Mr. Pope. How's it hanging! Let me introduce you to... Huh? Oh, well, then, how about....? No? Now, THIS one... Not so much? Wow, you must REALLY be tied into that whole "life" thing!
Hey! What's that statue down there? I bet it would make a good photo! Let's send a photographer to New York and shoot a few shots, eh?
And, overlook his flat out lies about himself as he padded his slim resume:
Nope. Not a constitutional law professor. A lecturer.
Nope. Wasn't conceived as a result of Selma.
Nope. Knew Rezko was a crook.
Nope. Aires wasn't just some guy in the neighborhood whose kids went to school with his. (Double lie for your money!)
Nope. He really did know Rev. Wright said those things. Why else dis-invite him to the launch of his Presidential Campaign?
Then, the lies after election ...
No lobbyists in MY administration!
Transparency all the way! Five days for public viewing on all bills before signing!
We don't bow to Kings in America!
No earmarks on MY watch!
No more "politics as usual! Let me introduce you to Geitner, Sebelius, Daschle, Kirk, Killefer, and Nazareth -- all good, tax-paying Americans!
Now about that whole "95%" thing...
HOW she can make a comeback:
OBVIOUSLY none of the others have had the spine to take action and become the leader aka advocate, etc. of the
TEA PARTY MOVEMENT
912 Project
Freedom movements
IF PALIN has the intelligence, she would beocme "active" and help link all of the networks and become the spokesperson leader with a spine to advance and motivate that movement.
SHE DOES NEED "competent" advisiors"
"COMPETENT" speechwriters"
Competent research team
and start doing her homework:
Stick to the ISSUES
STOP RESPONDING TO THE MEDIA !
she can just tell them:
1. we already know that
2. you already depleted that personal attack
3. Is your question or remark vital to the salvation of our liberties, freedom, does it create jobs ?
WHY DOES SHE BELIEVE she needs to respond to them:
SURROUND THEM WITHOUT A SOUND!
Say NOTHING
Absolutely NOTHING about anything personal
GO TO WORK TO SAVE THE USA
Response to personal attacks
B2Slim: I disagree. Palin should directly confront those who engage in the politics of personal destruction.
We've tried ignoring them. They don't go away.
We've tried caving in to the. They just keep attacking.
We need to put a mirror to them. Let them see themselves for what they are. And, while doing so, perhaps the country will see them for what they are.
Personal attacks have to be identified as such and the attacker must be called out. Demand of them civility.
You may not get it from all, but you will get it from some.
There are issues which MUST be discussed in a substantive manner. The Left has no arguments other than SHUT UP!
By ignoring their attacks, we just allow them to keep yelling "SHUT UP!"
Can't see the comments ...
Where are they? Why don't they come onto the screen for this article the way they did earlier today, and the way they do for the other articles??
Palin vs. the RINOs
--
Getting clear of the Republican Party's current mis-management seems to be the best course of action for Sarah Palin.
Contrary to Mr. Chapman's puzzling opinion, it's not so much that she's a "babe" but that she's a real person.
A "mensch," if you'll pardon my Yiddish.
Her appeal to real conservatives is that she's lived the conservative life, dealing with the same kinds of embarrassing and unpleasant realities that each of us faces, and doing it with quiet and unassuming self-responsibility.
We can see ourselves in her place, trying to do the job as best we can, taking care of our families and the other people who depend on us.
Politics is part of her life, but not the be-all and end-all of her life. She's a citizen first, and takes the power of government in her hands only to the extent that she sees it as her citizen's duty.
The average conservative has to like that.
The power-seeking professional politician, however....
Well, does it really matter to a power-hungry government goon whether he gets that power as a conservative or as a "Liberal"?
And pundits like Mr. Chapman really don't understand true conservatives, do they?
oh really...
Stevie Wonder...
With your very narrow appoarch to life and politics..particularly speaking of Sarah Palin et al, how would you explain the success of Golda Meier,{sp} Margaret Thatcher...or does your ideas/notions apply to only this side of the ocean? Because Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter have outer beauty as well as inter beauty, doesn't disqualify them from anything. There is some truth to what you say, but also plenty of people who get elected who aren't exactly Paul Newmans...think Henry Waxman!!
Lib charity-an oxymoron.
Libs are generous only with OPM (other people's money)!! EVERY LAST SINGLE study shows that conservatives (including the hated Christians) are FAR more charitable than liberals. Remember the Clintons taking tax deductions on their used underwear at Good Will?
"When your intellectual superior, Sarah Palin, referred to the Department of Law she was talking about the FEDERAL government, and why should would be protected from ethics complaints if she were president."
Lets use some critical thinking skills here bee.
Ok, safe to say that the Alaska Department of Law probably performs a similar role to the Federal Department of Justice, no? So, as the governor of Alaska, which institution do you think she works more with? HMMMM?
She obviously meant DoJ, she slipped and said Law. Ooops. Not like she miscounted how many states there are, or how many letters in jobs, or claimed the FDR went of TV during the great depression.
"CharletonHeston
I think he must be carrying a crush for Michele Obama
As is most of America. "
Somehow, I doubt most of America is in love with Chewbakka, especially Mr. Heston.
I agree with this article
Sorry you had to get penalized for stating the obvious to fellow Republicans. Palin is nice and pretty, but currently has no business leading our great nation.
I'd offer my alternative, but with the emotional reaction I see from others here I don't want to harm his chances with their knee-jerk mentality until they can sober up again.
so the little head does the thinking ?
The only problem I have with the piece is Chapman assuming that because Palin is attractive anyone supporting her must be thinking with the small head. Did I miss his column about how Obama's support among females and gay men is because they think he's hot? Equating her to Harriet Meirs in terms of experience is fair. You can make a case for that although I don't necessarily buy it. But do not discuss Palin in terms of her cup size. That "thing"s her and as a feminist I won't stand for it. I like Mr. Chapman's writing but he should have thought three times before sending in this piece.
Planoblue
That's a lot of rage you have there. What would you make of me, I wonder? I write here a fair amount of the time, and I have an ACLU award that I'm proud of. We currently are fighting for gay civil rights protection in my town. The last time it came up I was one of the people who started it. I don't know what is in your back story but I hope you manage to salvage yourself.
Gayle,
I cannot comprehend what you are living through right now. Please know that people you will never meet pray for you and wish you well. Kiss your little one on the head for me.
Steve Chapman's Misogynist Column
Get your head out of it and look at all factors involved in the 2008 campaign. A rabid, leftist press pounding Sarah and ignoring the opponents' flaws, nasty, vile bloggers smearing her and her family, stupid voters, etc. I am a professional woman and I support Sarah. Go Sarah! Steve Chapman, how 'bout stuffing it.
take her at her word
If you take her at her words it is clear...she said the state of AK will be fine if she lets the other people run the ball and she is part of that team, she complimented them for being servants to the people (she is too)...she said you don't need a title to help...I think she can help Alaska and help the US and my quess would be on the energy front...the nat. gas program is underway and that should help...if she can get ANWR drilled that would be a plus (Alaskans don't mind) and if she can teach people about predator control that would be great...just think of all those wolves in sheep clothing knowing Sarahs coming to town....the end of the story is always better...After scrapping his wind energy program, Mr T. Boone Pickens needs her voice pushing logic and rational thinking on the energy front...
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??
SARAH PALIN IS "HATED" BY THE LEFT & MSM BECAUSE SHE IS NOT ONLY BEAUTIFUL BUT IS HAPPY WITH HER LIFE, HER FAMILY & HER FAITH. THESE ARE THINGS THAT WE "REGULAR" PEOPLE THINK & FEEL. SHE WALKS HER TALK & NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK OF HER POLITICS, YOU HAVE TO RESPECT HER WILLINGNESS TO STAND FIRM IN HER BELIEFS. IF SHE WERE A BEAUTIFUL PRO-CHOICE POLITICIAN, THERE WOULD BE LITTLE OR NO CRITICISMS MADE.
