Why Adultery is Political Suicide

Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

By now, it's clear that Mark Sanford has about as much of a future in politics as he does in sumo wrestling. His confession of adultery was all it took to demolish any hopes he had of running for president -- and perhaps even to force him to step down as governor of South Carolina. But why?

After all, we've had presidents who are revered by posterity despite being unreliable husbands. Hardly anyone even remembers now that Franklin Roosevelt had a mistress, that Dwight Eisenhower may have had one, or that John Kennedy had several.

In the intervening decades, we've also become far more aware of just how common such behavior is among officeholders -- not only Gary Hart, Bill Clinton and Rudy Giuliani but lesser-known mayors, governors, congressmen and water commissioners. Nowadays, finding that a politician breached his marital vows is about as surprising as learning that a professional athlete failed a drug test. If Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi can overcome their guilt, why not Sanford?

Other politicians have survived -- most conspicuously our 42nd president. In fact, you'd think the Monica Lewinsky scandal would have settled the issue once and for all. Democrats found themselves excusing Clinton's conduct, and Republicans who condemned it wound up on the losing side in both public opinion and the impeachment battle.

When it was over, Clinton left office with a 65 percent approval rating. Trust him with your daughter? Not a chance. But your economy? Sure.

George W. Bush, by contrast, finished his term with an approval rating of 22 percent. Trust him with your daughter? Sure. But keep him away from the economy! Both parties could have drawn the same conclusion: Voters have more important things to worry about than their leaders' sex lives.

Yet here we are again, disqualifying a possible White House aspirant because he couldn't keep his pants on. After two decades of high-level political sex scandals, we seem to have reached a consensus that marital fidelity is actually pretty important in a leader. Given the choice, we would prefer peace and prosperity to presidential rectitude. But we really want all three, and we think we can have them.

Call it residual puritanism or an overdose of religion if you want, but most Americans think wedding vows are not to be disdained. In recent decades, sexual mores have gotten considerably more relaxed, with one major exception: extramarital affairs. A 2009 Gallup poll found that 92 percent of us think adultery is "morally wrong" -- which presumably means there are a lot more people who commit it than defend it. Only 40 percent of Americans think premarital sex is morally wrong, and only 47 percent say that of homosexual relations.

So Barney Frank's career survived his romp with a male prostitute, while John Edwards' fling with a campaign aide made him politically radioactive. Sex without marriage is OK. Sex in violation of marriage is not.

Why not? Because adultery, unlike a frisky bachelor lifestyle, connotes a reckless dishonesty at odds with our basic notions of integrity. Because it shows a lack of respect for the most important commitment that most of us will ever make. Because it indicates that the adulterer will always place his selfish desires above those who depend on him.

There is a cost to this approach, obviously. It disqualifies some smart, dedicated and able people merely because they suffer a single flaw -- and one that apparently is pretty common among the politically ambitious.

But so what? A talented executive can expect to lose her position for a single act of embezzlement. An outstanding journalist may be banished from his profession for one incident of plagiarism.

Of course, those lapses bear directly on how the offenders do their jobs, which is not the case with a governor who strays. But we don't vote for CEOs or newspaper reporters, which means they don't embody our higher aspirations. Americans think those elected to positions of public trust should have enough regard for the public to conduct themselves in an honest, upright way even in matters unrelated to their official duties.

Is it naive of us to believe that a politician who keeps his commitments to his wife will also keep his commitments to us? Probably. But not as naive as thinking that if he betrays her, he'll treat us any better.

Forgiving Sanford?

“I do believe that if he can reconcile with his family, if he is willing to try, then the people of South Carolina would be willing to give him a second chance,” said Sen. Graham.

What does this have to do with Governor Sanford Abandoning his job for a week? If he was in the private sector or if a government employee took state money and abandon his or her job for a week would they have a job?

Sanford is crazy
Who asks his wife to go see his mistress while undergoing Christian Counseling? He did. He should resign!!!

Cal Thomas' article
AuHunter, you are right, it is a good article, I just wish he'd used the name of the "voice", it is Lucifer the deceiver.

Temptation is something we all have to deal with every day, however many are never aware of the source and don't even think temptation is wrong.

Useful Idiots
You are so correct. Barney could only get in trouble in a library, where bending over a page is a bad offense. In the Congress it as a great thing, unless you're a Flah-e-duh GOP representative. The weird people of the PDR of Taxechusetts keep that porcine slob in office, just like their "esteemed" senior Sinator.

Political Suicide
Yep, if you are are Republican it is... it is eminently survivable if you're a male donkey party member. I think the Governor should step down, but I am a Texan and not a South Carolinian, their call. Would I vote for him? Maybe, after all he is an adulter and liar, but he sure ain't a socialist off-spring of an unmarried mother.

CAarchitect, Wrong Again
You say "I am totally against adultery, but since Dems NEVER resign, why force out this (R)?"

NY Gov Spitzer resigned.

Only if you are a Republican
Adultry ios political suicide for Republicans, but look at the examples of some Democrats; Te4d Kennedy and his big brother Jack, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, and the list goes on; and they enjoyed or do enjoy strong political lives.

I read Cal Thomas' column the other day about the Voice taking another casualty, and if you haven't read it, I would suggest you find it and take in what he is saying.

What a double standard we have in this country. We will re-elect some scoundrel who has committed adultry, but will politically kill politically, a good man who has done far less.

Ricci WINS!!!!

Take that Sotomayor and shove it!

Family

Mark Sanford never did anything to hurt me or my family.

Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi have.

Adultery only fatal to conservatives
Because conservative voters expect their leaders to live moral lives. They want them to tell the truth too.

But it seems liberal left voters don't care if their leaders lie or are immoral. At least that is my take on why immoral behavior does not seem to hurt left politicians.

The Joke May Be On You Libs
You silly ones support the "Cap-n-Trade" bill, even though it is a regressive tax, fails to control pollution, and is an economic killer - both for the Country and for individuals.

You do not even realize that an Amendment to the 1300 page bill, entered at 3:00 AM, would require a FEDERAL inspection of your homes for energy effectiveness should they decide to sell it. Also, you would be FORCED to UPGRADE their houses prior to any sale.

So, much for the "AS IS, BY IS" language that I put in many of the contracts that I draft.

None of you is an "USEFUL" Idiot. Your idiocy is USELESS.

will from CA

Eh Wrong.

Barney Frank is still in Office because Liberals don't hold their leaders accountable as long as they are "right" on the issues. Period!

I have never heard a "Conservative Polictical Leader" "preach" family values.

What they do advocate, promote and support is legislation that is not destructive to the family.

Liberals on the other hand do advocate, promote and support legislation that is destructive to the family.

A candidate claiming to have "Family Values", is just communicating his/her understanding of the importance of government not intruding into the family.

Its is not nor has it even been a proclaimation that they are somehow above human weakness.

Using the Liberal media, Liberals have successfully manage to spin the term "Family Values" into some call on the part of Conservatives telling people how to live their lives. People without critical thinking skills buy this hook, line and sinker.

The fact is Newt Gingrich, Bob Armstrong, David Vitter, Mark Sandord, and others never have preached or told anyone how they should conduct their married life, how to raise their children, or how or when they should attend their house of prayer.

You may believe their is hypocricy at play, but educated people know better.

Let's Review
50% of South Carolinians do not want him to resign.

The overwhelming majority of South Carolinians do not want the Lt. Governor to take his place.

And, the Lt. Governor does not want the top spot under the circumstances ... I heard him say as much.

THIS MEANS THAT IT IS NOT UP TO YOU, UNLESS YOU LIVE IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Finally, let the Democrats cast the first stone because they can then explain: President Clinton, Gov. Patterson, Gov. Spitzer, Mark Foley and his Democratic successor, Gov. McGreevey, Governor Edwin W. Edwards, Senator Gary Hart, JFK, Eisenhower, FDR, Governor Huey P. Long, Senator Earl Long, President Cleveland, President Thomas Jefferson ... I could go on, but I care more about fiscal responsibility than marital fidelity.

John & Tammy
"It was not my intent to misspell your name, and for that I do apologize."

Accepted.

"However, you espouse certain views and make such illiterate statements that will inevitably lead to conclusions about you and therefore, names."

Honey, I have two degrees from H'vard (Fin & Econ), a Juris Doctorate from G'town, and a Masters in Economics from the London School of Economics.

"There is no avoiding that."

No, you just want me to agree with you, which will not happen.

"Where would you be, St. Denis, if your money went only to your state?"

I am fine. In fact, I cashed out over a year ago, paid my taxes, converted to precious metals, and sent it overseas.

"Right now you would have a red star and a hammer and sickle over your head instead of fleur de lis."

Why do you think that I call it Obama's Red America?

"You are an anachronism and regardless how much you yearn for Zion, it will not return."

When have I ever said that I wanted to return to Zion? Your Otopia is not sustainable.

Tammy, drink your Evian and spell it backwards because that is what you are.

Governor Sanford
In all the television commentary I have heard regarding the adulterous acts of Governor Mark Sanford, the concern has been more about how he left the state undefended and without notice rather than the fact that he committed adultery. The adultery seems to have taken second stage. However, if he wasn't committing adultery, he wouldn't have left the state undefended and without notice, so the adultery really is the center piece of the whole issue. Adultery is an indicator of low moral character. The author of this column is right on when he asks the final question: How can we, the citizens of South Carolina, think that Sanford will treat us any better than he did his wife for whom he had such little regard that he cheated on her, or his children for whom he had such little regard that he chose to leave them on Father's Day weekend. This country was not won by men and women of low moral character, it will not prosper under the leadership of men and women of low moral character. Governor Sanford should resign. My name is veritaseequitas and I am a Republican...

@ Jo-el:
This much.

The simple rule on fidelity
Norm! from the program Cheers once said (in character, not the real person) he was a bad husband because he was never around for his wife but that if he had cheated on her, he would not have been a bad husband but instead...... a bad person.

Screw the politics and think deeper here, people!

@ CAar:
The reason is very simple: Dems do not preach the Christian bull-ish about marriage and whatnot. Dems do not paint themselves as the party of god, but as a party of humans. GOPErs have made their bed, now they shall lie in it.
HAha!

I'm indifferent
I am totally against adultery, but since Dems NEVER resign, why force out this (R)? Why not just ignore him like Dems do each of their party who strays? I won't re-type the list of philanderers in both parties. Notice which ones LEAVE office as a result - the Repubs. Which party has the adulterers and tax cheats still in office? Only an atomic bomb or a conviction will get a dem out of office before the term's over. Yeah, Sanford shouldn't have done it, should resign, but if I were him I would make a speech about how Clinton is his inspiration and how he wants to finish the job the "great people of SC elected him to do," etc etc.

@ St. Denis:
It was not my intent to misspell your name, and for that I do apologize. However, you espouse certain views and make such illiterate statements that will inevitably lead to conclusions about you and therefore, names. There is no avoiding that.
Where would you be, St. Denis, if your money went only to your state? Right now you would have a red star and a hammer and sickle over your head instead of fleur de lis.
You are an anachronism and regardless how much you yearn for Zion, it will not return.

I am not hear to argue
against your point, but I wouldn't call Bill
Clinton dead in the water in spite of his
embarrassment. He left office with the highest
rating in recent history. He still is active
in both politics and charities.

St. Denis:
I will call you a hate monger
I will call you a woman full of rage and

I will call you a scaredy cat
I will call you a woman who is full of herself.
I will be among those who accuse you of using

I fear for your child or children if you
explode with anger around them as much
as you do here.
I fear for your child or children because
they must have a great lack of attention.

We have more jobs available than we have citizens.

Do you?

Oh BTW,
And who is moving to YOUR state, Louisiana?
Thank you.

@ Dennis:
Yeah, people are leaving NY because Spitzer and Patterson banged some strange. Very incisive analysis, Denis, I am amazed at your analytical skills!
The reason I laugh at your fallen heroes is the fact that they were the first to talk sh1t about other men getting into affairs, only to be revealed as hypocrites a tad later on.
Once again, just for your sweet cheeks mon cheri: I could care less about his affair. I laugh at his hypocrisy, and at his fall.
Just as I am about yours, as a GOP brownshirt you do have at least one skeleton in the closet. You all do.

John, NY

Please say "Hello" for us to former Gov. Spitzer and current Gov. Patterson.

It is no wonder that people are leaving your Tax State in droves and moving to Florida and Texas.

HAha!
I could care less when it comes to adultery and the likes (as long as we are talking about consenting adults). What he did is, ultimately, between him and his wife. He has to deal with that, and explain why he did what he did to a woman who bore FOUR SONS to him.
But, since it is payback time, I must tell you that I am brimful with schadenfreude! Wanna chase Clinton for Monica? Here you go Marky Mark, all grown up in the big world, with a Monica all his own. BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!! Eat it, you punk! Eat it and enjoy! We are laughing at your and GOP's expense!
And I bet that Tangelo Boehner is knee deep in some strange beef vat as well!

Andrea

The Lt. Gov. does not want to assume the Governorship under these circumstances. I heard him say it himself.

A great article and I think your last paragraph is the best in the whole thing ! I couldn't put it better myself.

Very nice, for a Con.

"... how about you release the perpetual liplock you have on your messiah NObama,"

I think your therapist would have something to say about your references.

"... get up off your knees and try clearing your head for a while before offering more of this silly looking ka,ka."

Ka ka? And since when does my opinion about a politician who lies about his whereabouts, cheats on his wife, then asks for forgiveness AFTER asking Clinton to step down for doing less have ANYTHING to do with Obama?
-----

OK, so we know that we are dealing with a Middle School child (ka ka?), maybe a HS student, who thinks that body references and childish name-calling belong in a discussion about a serious offense.

Looks like a sexual freak waiting to explode. I hope your parents know what you are doing in the basement.

a waste of time
I just wish these pious conservatives who make their careers sticking their moral heads up everyone elses arse would mind their own business. If they wherent such hypocrites these issue would remain private ...where they belong.

Liberius2009

Aliens, as in those from outer space, or those, who come here illegally?

BTW, congrats on the usage of 2009. I keep telling TD2008 that his handle is sooooooooooo last year.

Reply to your article governors adulty
Thank you for your aritcle.
In my opinon, when the majority of American citizens condone adulty in men or women in high government responsiblities, it will signal that their own lives are not lived within the bonds of what is right and what is wrong. By the way, General/President Eisenhour has been cited by journalists and others as having been an adulterer - actually while his affair with Kay Sommersby was a kissy, huggy, touchy relationship, it never went to the limit according to the book written by Kay Sommersby, "Past Forgetting." He seemed to be constrained by the teachings of his parents and his own marriage to Mamie - whom he loved. The others who you nameed, had a sense of egoistic selfish entitlement only to themselves, than to those who trusted and loved them.

Liberius and Roadmaster
You both are wrong. Sexual urges, like food, drugs and other pleasurable activities are COMPLETELY separate form rational decisions one has to make on his or her job. Even the brain centers controlling logical, intelligent decisions versus impulsive cravings are on different hemispheres! One weakness does not mean weakness in the other! The Bible whom we, conservatives like to quote abundantly, clearly shows that the best of Biblical leaders have committed indiscretions, (for which they sincerely repented), yet their outstanding leadership qualities, as well as their wisdom and love of their nation, stand as immortal examples for how one quality or weakness does not define the other!
Only naïve, and yes, hypocritical conservatives, will condemn Sanford for his sad and immoral behavior. That does not preclude that he is an outstanding Republican conservative, that might lead this nation with a lot more conservative convictions, than many so-called “faithful” Republicans. One more thing: If a man, or for that matter woman, “strays”, is it always the “sinner’s” fault? I know men whose wives were such mean spirited, selfish creatures, or such insufferable bores, that I was not surprised when the man cheated on the wife. Why not divorce her?! Are you kidding? In this society, in a divorce only the male loses everything, including his rights to parent his children!
Let’s just be reasonable AND compassionate towards those who brought themselves down through thoughtless actions, and give them credit where credit is due. We don’t know Mrs. Sanford what kind of person she is in a personal and intimate relationship.

Here's the problem...
the adultery in the case of a politician is rarely a private act with no public consequences. Clinton cheated and when caught lied under oath...perjury is not something our presidents should be committing. Sanford cheated and went AWOL from his governing responsibilities for five days. There are only two explanations for this, both bad: either his staff knew where he was and how to get in touch with him and they lied to cover for him. Or, no one knew where he was and no one was running SC for 5 days. I know it's a little early in the season, but what if there had been a hurricane?

Let's compare this to another situation. What if your doctor disappeared for several days and didn't provide any coverage for his patients?

You Are Failing To Miss

That only 50% of those in SC want the Governor to resign...

And, nearly ALL do not want the Lt. Governor to become Governor.

FIRST - II
"One of the principal reasons America is in steep decline and has lost its face in foreign affairs is that it has been morally mismanaged and betrayed under Republican administrations since Nixon."

If I had been alive and of voting age, I would have voted for Kennedy. I was a newborn when Nixon was elected and using training wheels when he left. My first vote was for Reagan, who won 49 out of 50 states. BTW, I have no problem with Iran-Contra.

"What is obvious to observers outside of their bubble is that a majority of Republicans have abandoned God, embraced a lifestyle of greed, decadence, and corruption, deceived their constituents by breaking fundamental Conservative principles, misused GOP money for sexcusrsions and still feel that they are entitled to retain office after they've been exposed as hypocrites."

I'm not a Rep. or Con., but do have a great spiritual life.

"Many then run for President for naked power and have no shame or genunie remorse for their immorality. Adulter Newt, Incestuous Giuliani, "South America Sex" Sanford, and Office Plugger Ensign all feel entitled."

Do not most pols do the same?

"Are they?"

None of them are.

"Don't voters deserve better alternatives than the same old excuses?"

Yes, which is why I am a fiscally-conservative CONSTITUTIONALIST without Party affiliation.

FIRST - I

"However, Republicans commit 8 sex crimes for every 1 that Democrats do AND they make audacious claims about their moral purity and commitment to God when their actions reveal their stony hearts filled with cold black wickness and sin adoration. The proof is in the stats."
"But you seldom find Democrats giving lectures on family values and the ten commandment either. I will say again the sin is hypocrisy;
not adultery."

Since when did the Democrats talk about religion?

"Kudos to Hal! This guy is smart and tough and fair. You gotta love a straight shooter (unlike Cheney)"

Hal wants Secularism. And, he is as dumb as a Pet Rock.

"To St Denis. Partial credit. 1/2 point. True enough that adultry is found in both parties."

Thank you very much. When do I get a full credit?

Prove it. Name names.

Hypocrites, Part 2
I think Sanford should resign (as well the other guilty conservatives), but there is also another side to this story and liberals' reaction to it. I quote from Rev. Voddie Baucham's blog: "While homosexual marriage advocates are being paraded before the cameras to argue for a redefinition of marriage based upon the hypocrisy of 'conservatives' and 'traditional marriage' advocates, we need to know that they are wrong. Governor Sanford’s sin points to something that many will overlook. We can only talk about failure in marriage to the degree that we believe in success in marriage. In other words, it is only because we know that marriage is supposed to be a monogamous, life-long covenant between a man and a woman that we can call what happened here a failure. Far from being an argument for the deconstruction and redefinition of marriage, this is evidence that we all know what the institution is supposed to be!

Calling for a redefinition of marriage based on the failure of a traditional marriage advocate is like calling for a redefinition of English grammar because most famous writers split infinitives and misspell words from time to time. This is an untenable position. Far from being a cut-and-dry argument for redefining marriage, what we see in this tragedy is the indisputable fact that marriage is a clearly defined institution. What is necessary here is a call for strengthening marriage."

Hypocrites, Part 1
Sexual sin is found in both parties. SO IS HYPOCRISY. Obama signs anti-smoking legislation when he is a smoker himself. (What, he never heard of the patch?) Al Gore promotes the global warming fantasy while he lives in a 10,000 sq. ft. house that consumes 12 times the amount of electricity of an average Nashville house (as reported by The Associated Press). Do Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid eschew limos and jets and drive around in a Prius? I thought not. How many environmental activists have wind turbines in their backyard? Liberal Democrats are pushing through "health care reform," but how many of them will choose the public plan to save the taxpayers money? Speaking of taxes, liberal Democrats are all about raising taxes, but how many of Obama's Cabinet appointments have been caught evading their own tax payments? Conservatives aren't the only ones who are hypocrites! The only difference between liberals and conservatives is what they are hypocritical about.

I can't decide which is more despicable
the governor, for what he's put his family through OR, dhimmicrats, who get absolutely giddy when a weepublican gets caught screwing around. Can you spell Schadenfreude? I'd tell most of the posters here to GROW UP, but then I remember that the beauty of being liberal/progressive/statist is that you NEVER have to be an adult as that would require maturity, knowledge, wisdom, integrity and taking responsibility.

Myself, I have equal disdain for anyone who cheats - whether it's poker or poke her. Many years ago, when a bit of a carouser myself (but single), it became obvious to me that people who cheated on their spouses didn't make good friends. Why would I trust them in anything, when the very person they're supposed to be closest too, their wife, cannot?

Cheaters are unable to resist temptation. Even after being caught and promising not to do it again, they will, IF the temptation is stronger than their will to resist. They're always looking, and wondering, "Is this one worth it?" And, "Can I get away with it?"

Most Americans don't care
"Is it naive of us to believe that a politician who keeps his commitments to his wife will also keep his commitments to us? Probably. But not as naive as thinking that if he betrays her, he'll treat us any better".

Both thoughts are naive because the relationships being discussed have different boundaries. If Sanford has fiscal conservative values i.e. low taxes then his commitment to keeping taxes low is ALL I care about. If he does not keep his other commitments i.e. to be faithful or show up at his kid's soccer game - then that is non of my business because it is nto within the boundaries of his commitment to me.

Have a personal relationship with Sanford, absolutely not! the man is a pig!! Vote for him to run this country, absolutely! One is personal the other is public service. For the same reasons I don't ask my doctor if he or she is happily married when I pick him or her. His or her medical expertise is what matters to me.

Poor Guy
An elderly man suffered a massive heart attack. The family drove wildly to get him to the emergency room. After what seemed like a very long wait, the ER Doctor appeared, wearing his scrubs and a long face. Sadly, he said, "I'm afraid he is brain-dead, but his heart is still beating."

"Oh, Dear," cried his wife, her hands clasped against her cheeks with shock!
"We've never had a Democrat in the family before!"

You know
everyone is condemning Sanford in one way or another but we forget as they say "it takes two to tango" I'm not giving this "Maria" a pass, she was a married woman, and she knew Mark Sanford was a married man. She's as guilty as he is.
Apparently he was 'counseling' her about some marital problems she was having..Mistake Number 1..No man should be counseling another woman without his wifes knowledge, consent and presence. That's the road to perdition because
one thing most certaily can lead to another.

2. Both Mark Sandford and Maria were selfish
only out for themselves..there was NO thought to either of there families (children).

3. If my husband had confessed publicly as Sanford did and the first person he mentioned as being sorry he hurt was the Mistress and not Me..well H hath no fury like a woman scorned.
That showed that he's still got 'this inappropriate love' for this adulteress woman; to me that was a humiliating slam at Jenny..I don't know how she will get over that one, if she does she's a bigger person than I. She asked him NOT to got to Argentina, and he did, so his priorities were for this other woman not his family.
I know and I said it on this site, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God..the beauty of that is there is forgiveness if one is truly repentant...Sanfords words do make me wonder how sorry he really is. By putting Marias feelings first before his wife's
and mentioning her down the line..was as humiliating as if he'd had her standing by his side. Yes he should resign and go back to his farm..

I Love This..

“Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties. After all, everyone dies - so the living should take this to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us. Couple that with unlimited temptation from lobbyists and you just about predict the outcome. I gave up trying to tell which party is the least moral a long time ago. NARAL - Baby slaughtering organization
NAMBLA - Man Boy loving perverters
ACLU - American Communist League un-Ameriican POSs
KKK - We all know what a bunch of low lifes this scum and Sen. Robert "KKK" Byrd (D-West Virginia are. Or, former DembulbOCraphead USSC Justice Hugo Black.

Plus, the DumboCraphead Party is the home of hundreds more such low life nasty perverted organizations in this nations. All liberal organization set on destroying this nation in one manner or another.

Good to know we are discussing this topic with adults.

So in summary, a Con who broadcasts and legislates against things they deem immoral, who then commit the sin they rail against, is NOT a hypocrite if they are no longer in office.

We are getting a better sense as to why it is difficult to have this conversation. If you keep moving the goal posts, then there is no chance at discussion. Add to that the childish name-calling and you have, in my opinion and experience on TH, a Con conversation at its finest.

"Where are They?
I keep hearing how Republican politicians are hypocritical when they commit adultery because they are holier than thou Bible thumpers who are always condemning adultery and talking about family values."

For starters, Google Sanford in SC. There was some sort of hubbub recently you may have missed.
------
Quotes from the Inter-Tubes:
Bob Barr, Republican Congressman from Georgia. Sponsored the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act, saying "The flames of hedonism, the flames of narcissism, the flames of self-centered morality are licking at the very foundation of our society, the family unit." Was married three times. Paid for his second wife's abortion. Failed to pay child support to the children of his first two wives and while married to his third and present wife was photographed licking whipped cream off of strippers at his inaugural party.

Jeff Miller, (R-Cleveland), Senate Republican Caucus Chairman in Tennessee and the sponsor of Tennessee’s Marriage Protection act, getting divorced (as of April 2005) because of an affair he was having with an office aid. Miller described the Tennessee Marriage Protection Act as a means of preserving the sanctity of marriage.

Ed Schrock, two-term Republican Congressman from Virginia, with a 92% approval rating from the Christian Coalition. Cosponsor of the Federal Marriage Amendment, consistently opposed gay rights. Married, with wife and kids. Withdrew his candidacy for a third term after tapes of him soliciting for gay sex were circulated.

Randall Terry, Right to Life activist. His son Jamiel is gay; his daughter Tila had sex outside of marriage, became pregnant, had a miscarriage - she is no longer welcome in his home; his daughter Ebony had 2 children outside of wedlock and became Muslim. He has campaigned against infidelity and birth control, gays and unwed mothers. Terry himself was censured by his church after committing adultery.

Robert
You don't have to go far to find puritanical ideology among conservative Republicans (although at this point, most conservatives like to call themselves libertarians rather than Republicans). The Republican Party HAS BENN hijacked by puritanical ideology based Christian Conservatives who put way too much emphasis on the abortion issue, not willing to compromise on a reasonable, beneficial for today’s society, EARLY GESTATION DILATION AND CURETAGE ABORTION. Personally, I encountered vicious attacks whenever I brought up this issue, being told to "keep my legs together" rather than acquiesce to reason! In response to my reasoning and proving my fellow “conservative Republicans”, I got numerous Bible quotations about my “immorality” regarding my own abortions and views on abortion, and was WARNED to regret what I have done, before it was too late. Now, if the "CORE" of the Republican Party has become SO vehement about morality, the liberals can rightfully attack even the most conservative politician, that could be otherwise successful in a presidential run, for his or her sexual misstep.
Don't blame "them", but take a good look at "us"!

Sorry to deflate one of your fantasies again but it is good to see you in print again. Mr. Sanford was "screaming at the top of his lungs" about how Pres. Clinton couldn't keep his pants zipped (which is obviously a true fact) and how he needed to be impeached when he was a congressman but when he not only carries on an affair, has taxpayers paying for it and lies to not only his family (including his children) but also to his own staff so that they had no idea who was governing SC you don't see a diference?!

Adultery
There is another reason why adultery by an elected official is wrong: it sets him/her up to be blackmailed. People in elective office usually have control over public funds and/or contracts involving lots of money. A public official with something to hide is a bad combination.

Cons boast about their standards
So why shouldn't Cons be held to their own standards? If someone like Sanford says "anyone who has an affair while in office should be impeached" then let his stand by his own standard. Anything else is hypocrisy.

If Sanford wasn't such a holier-than-thou Bible-thumping idiot, then I'd say let the rest of his record --his political record -- be your voting guide.

I really would NOT care (politically) that he cheated on his wife/family if his own political policies didn't include extramarital affairs as an impeachable offense. His wife and family would decide his personal fate. It is the hypocrisy on the Con that places the them in the middle of a firestorm that mixes politics and personal family business. Sanford, by his own words, is to be either impeached or voted out. End of story.

Add to this the problem of skipping out on your duties and you have an obvious answer.

As an aside, if Cons voted based on matters of infidelity, you would have had Romney, and Romney ONLY as a candidate. All others should have been summarily excluded from running. Stick to your principles (of which I do not entirely disagree) or stop pretending that there is a fair comparison between a cheater and a cheating hypocrite.

Security Clearance
Committing adultery is cause for losing or being denied a security clearance..."

Actually it usually is not.

"...More than one man has lost his job because his clearance was revoked after his boss or the FBI learned he was having an affair..."

it is the circumstance,,,

"... After all, if a man will not keep the Oath he made to his wife, how can he be trusted to keep his Oath to the Constitution? Who will trust that man to keep secrets? He could easily be blackmailed by a foreign power after being ‘honey trapped.’..."

seldom happens wonder why that is loon?

Perhaps you should learn a little about Christianity. Standards are set, but not always met, because no one is perfect. That is where repentance and forgiveness comes in.

WALK A MILE.......
Hypocrisy or fidelity should not be equal vices. Those spouting righteous indignation or contempt for moral values need to "walk a mile in the moccasins"! The betrayal, distrust and loss of self-worth experienced by the person who becomes the victim of adultery are irreparable . From 1960 and the Haight-Ashbury, free love crowd, to the forgive a President, he or she has more pressing problems and are brilliant Rhodes Scholars, America and its citizens have lost their sense of family values and moral ethics. "CHANGES" promoting these values and ethics will serve America and its citizens well, as have the 10 Commandments.

Adultry is NOT Political Suicide
Let's not forget that Conservative "Values Voters" overlooked Reagan's adultry and remarriage to Nancy. Hollywood culture at work with multiple divorces' and affairs that Conservatives approved.

Yet Conservatives(like triple divorcee' Rush Limbaugh) as well as Newt, Henry Hyde and Larry Craig among others) screamed at Clinton's infidelity and railed against his affair while they carried on with their own Unlike Reagan, Clinton did not give up on his marriage but remained married to Hillary, made his apologies, and mended and repaired their relationship as much as can be done.

Newt Gingrinch is hailed as "Brilliant and thought provoking" by Conservatives who consider him a serious presidential contender. Of course, they overlook and excuse his "Youthful indescretions. What about Larry Craig? Did he resign as promised after his anonymous gay sex at airports?

We have seen this week Sen. Ensign and GOv. Sanford still stay in their powerful elected positions. Rationale? Once elected, morals don't really matter and power begets privelege for sexual promiscuity.

Whats the Difference
Our Politicans are screwing us, whats the difference. They are lying, cheating and stealing away the future of all American Families with their selfrightous GREED. They won't do a dam thing about the Illegal's to give jobs back to American's. They won't stop giving out H1B Visas to give foreign workers jobs. They won't lower taxes on Corps to save American Jobs. They put in this Crap and Trade to benefit those that are screwing us, and the worst Snake in all of this screwing is Al Gore. Where is our Government Pride of taking care of American's. 3 Presidents in the past,Hoover, Truman and Eisenhower rounded up all illegal's to put AMERICAN'S to work , but today they are bought and paid for by Lobby and Special Interest Groups to keep cheap labor over American Pride.
When are the American People going to Wake up to the Crime being done by our Worthless Idiots in Washington. It does not make any difference if they are Democrat or Republican. They are the scum of this Country, They are worse than an adultrous Gov. They are screwing all American's not just 1 person. Open your EYES America !!!

"...Is it naive of us to believe that a politician who keeps his commitments to his wife will also keep his commitments to us? Probably. But not as naive as thinking that if he betrays her, he'll treat us any better. "

A cartoon in this mornings paper nailed it. A woman asked what the difference was Republicans and Democrats both commit adultery? The other woman answered the Republican always starts with a lecture on family values. LOL I could be wrong here but it seems to me that it is the hypocrisy not the adultery that raises the ire of constituents. Adultery may be bad but it is personal; hypocrisy states exactly who you are. Rev Haggert is a classic of what I mean

Cheating politicians
Too bad, if he had cheated on his taxes instead of his wife he would be on Obama's cabinet.

Political Suicide
The four main reasons in order of importance to me for a philandering, unethical, immoral, or law-breaking politician are:
1) He/she disgraces/degrades the office they swore to uphold and in effect is an affront to voters.
2) The gross hypocrisy that’s usually involved.
3) The lying and deception to evade detection of their wrongdoing and further lying and deception when they are discovered.
4) The ridiculous hubris and lack of shame that these disgusting examples of humanity project as if the rules don’t apply to them.

morality
Political figures are a composite of the aspirations of society. They are the people who make the decisons that members of society will enforce on each other. So the society of America is immoral and hypocritical. We already knew that. That does not stop the individual person from being moral and honest, whether he lives in a society with a murderous dictator like Uganda or Cambodia in the 1970's, or a nation like the present day United States where all are being educated that the individual has no choice but to do whatever the majority are doing. When political party politicians commit adultery, fornication, or homosexual acts, they are doing these things in behalf of the people who put them in office. Party members are much more interested in being part of a soap opera than they are in governing. People who cannot govern themselves are not going to be successful in governing a nation. George Washington did not make note of this problem that political parties have in his analysis, but it exists nevertheless. Political party members are forced to justify the immorality of their political party politicians.
That is why I am registered independent. Immorality by an independent voter is wrong. An immoral independent voter should not be elected or retained in public office. Regardless of however many immoral independent voters there are, I am free to be moral myself. As an independent voter, I am free to believe what I want to believe and do not have to suscribe to any agenda put in place by hypocrites trying to make a false impression.

Vows
When one gets married, you take a vow to remain faithful to that person.
When you take a public office you also take a oath or { vow } to the public..... it is realy very simple if you think about it. If your wife can not trust you to remain fathful then how in the world can the public excpect anything different????
Couple this with the fact that because they DO hold a public office theyy are automaticly held to a higher standered of morals and ethics.. and should always be.. Out with the bum!!!!!

Governor Sanford
OH!!YE!! Of little understanding and forgiveness.
For the pious ideolog who believes everything is black or white, emotions on intellectual/physical level play even a larger part in our lives than an ideolog would like to admit.
Read the e-mails from him to her and her to him they did not start as a premeditated affair they started from one friend to another. Friendship often ends in Love. The later notes were romantic, poetic and filled with a despair of what would never be. So they took a week out of a lifetime it’s between him his God, his wife and the “Other Woman”. Leave them alone they have enough unhappiness and misery in their lives. None of it has anything with his ability to a good father and Governor.

JMO51from NY

Try to understand. Bill Clinton broke the law.

Monica got a $60,000 a year Pentagon Job. Was every intern at the White offerred and received a $60,000 a year Pentagon Job? The answer is no. That violates the Federal Sexual Harrasment Laws.

You can't give special benefits to someone who is providing sexual favors to the boss and not give the same or similar benefits to others not giving sexual favors to the boss. Thats the law!

Let alone the perjury, coverup, and millions spent to investigate.

Now we all know how the National Organization for Women and other left wing groups support the Federal Sexual Harrassment Laws.

Oh thats right. They defended Bill Clinton violating the Federal Sexual Harrassment Laws.

The word is *hypocrite* if you intend
to use it: a person who affects moral values he/she does not practice.

Clinton's adultery was worse because it included unlawful activities like perjury and obstruction of justice (an impeachment count against Nixon, also).

One of Cliton's involved an intern, directly subordinate to the pres. and White House staff. It was worse because he had relations with her while he was conducting business with generals in the Balkan *incursion*--never validated by Congress or the UN. It was worse because even his decisions about attacking the terrorist enemies of the US were influenced by his legal problems over his adulteries.

Sanford made an *ss out of himself by not simply saying he made a mistake and now wanted his marriage and career to continue. Period. Rambling, teary-eyed slobbering makes everyone cringe, and no one believes such a person can administrate anything.

But I don't think he should resign unless investigations can prove his affair jeopardized his state or violated the law. Dems. don't. Stubbs in the Congress molested a 17-year-old page and got applauded, showing Dem. values.

Spitzer resigned because he was using prostitutes and violating federl law (the Mann Act) involving human trafficking.

Sanford was merely silly. But if silliness is the issue, the entire senate in Albany should resign post haste.

teapartypatriots.org--find a place to take back the streets and tell both parties *Don't tread on us.*

Gov. Mark Sanford ,R.I.P.
If one has no standards to uphold he can do anything immoral, illegal or indecent and live to tell about it. Just ask Bill Clinton.

A true conservative does have standards. High standards. I believe Gov.Sanfords has them. He let his guard down and did the unthinkable. For that he should resign. His judgement is flawed.

Had it been only one time, he could have possibly been forgiven as just succumbing to a weak moment. That was not the case. It has continued and he has lived a lie for months.

He put his family out there for ridicule and shame. He put his job in jeopardy. He could have been blackmailed and for what? His own selfish pleasures.

He swore an oath to his wife and broke it. He swore an oath to his state and broke it. Could he be trusted again? I don't think so.

Bizarre behavior
Sanford did more than make a moral mistake. He completely stepped out of character or at least the character we thought he was.

Adultery and Politicians
The willingness to violate one's marital vows is a sign of a narcissistic and even sociopathic personality. Is it smart to give a person who is that full of himself or herself that he/she thinks she can violate something so important as their marital vows so much power over our lives? I think doing so is potentially dangerous.

Another factor is that we like to elect officeholders who are charming and charismatic. The problem is that charm and charisma that gets our votes can't be turned on and off as easily as a light switch and can draw someone as easily into bed as into the voting booth. Maybe we should vote for the candidate who is colorless and speaks to us in a monotone!

Ambivalence
These men think they can have it both ways.
They don't have a realistic view of cause and effect. They can't believe their actions have consequences.
It would be dangerous having someone who thinks this way as commander in chief.

Bruce A from CA
Bruce A has it all exactly correct. I could never had said so well.
"Vows and Oaths
The rationalization by the author, that one can be unfaithful in the marriage commitment, but still walk the straight and narrow with the responsibility of government, is beyond logic. Reminds me of the old joke: A guy in the bar asks a very attractive woman if she'll go to bed with him for a million bucks. She looks him over, grins a little mischievous grin and says, "Sure." He says, " Will you go to bed with me for $20?" She says, "I'm not that kind of girl!" He replies, "We have already decided what kind of girl you are, now we are just haggling over price."

If the politician has not the moral backbone to resist the temptation to deny the vows made to his wife, all it will take for him to disavow the oaths of office is a large enough "temptation." Whether they be money or power, when his price is reached, he will then be able to "rationalize" that also. The affair is a clear indicator of the true dept of moral convictions. Betraying your wife is only a stone's throw from betraying his office and his country." Thanks, Bruce.

What's good for one...
is good for all. If SC determines to toss Sanford aside, then ALL the offenders (adulterers) should be kicked out. You would then be amazed at how much better our country is governed (assuming that there are enough innocent leaders left)! The problem is that the American populace is guilty of this same offense repeatedly, and they can somehow "excuse" themselves since their favored political leaders can get away with it.

Adultery
Didn't seem to hurt Bill Clinton, but maybe multiple adulteries don't count.
Donald W. Bales

Missing word: "Caught"
The premise of this article is wrong. The title should read: "Why Getting Caught In Adultery Is Political Suicide."

From Thomas Jefferson all the way up to Clinton, we've had plenty of very successful (even great) Presidents who were wildly unfaithful to their wives.

Getting caught seems to be the problem.

JMO51

Sadly, you do not know Stormy Daniels. By the way, she admits to knowing NOTHING about G'ment, but does know bjs. Of course, so does Barney Frank.

My Hope
My hope is that we someday stop judging politicians on their marital fidelity but on their competence in office. This marital fidelity thing is getting old and about as relevant as whether you took a puff back in college. Politicians are not saints, or spiritual leaders.

I will take a competent adulterer any day over an incompetent family values guy or gal.

St. Denis In Obama's Red America
Sadly, we often do have to choose between bad and worse. But thats OK as long we still appreciate that bad is bad. Besides being a jerk Vitter is also a phoney. But worse is worse.

Tadd Peake
So let me get this straight. The politician who attacks their opponents for their life choices like when Sanford and Ensisn attacked clinton for adulerty and furthermore demand that he resign because of it and then do the very same thing and don't resign themselves is not being a hyocrate because they still think it is wrong, even thought they do it?

It seems to me that if you get up on a soap box and are critical of others because of their behavior you ought to be held to a higher standard when it comes you your own conduct. Don't you agree?

JMO51

I'll take The Vitter, anyday.

The only challenger, Stormy Daniels, is a porn star, who is still practicing her "craft".

O: You're No Jack Kennedy

Barack is not Jack, who signed an across-the-board tax cut, was a war hero, acted constitutionally, and was not afraid of rogue bullies. He certainly was not a Marxist.

Yes, he cheated. So what?

Michelle is not Jacqueline in any way shape or form.

Jacqueline did open the White House to television cameras, but that was to show off historic restorations.

If I had been alive and of voting age at the time, I probably would have voted for JFK.

And, I certainly would have cried on 11.22.63.

Politicians do survive
You know politicians do survive. Take David Vitter, I don't hear any calling for his resignation. Guliani's wife learning about his intention to divorce on television was not a campaign issue, it was his support for abortion and gay rights that did him in. Sanford could have survived an affair, going AWOL not.

Neither party has a monopoly on adultury, bit it is one party that has been self righteous on the issue and yet its leaders who are caught in the act don't resign.

Hypocrisy is a Sub-set of Trust

The word Hypocrisy is nothing more than a Sub-set of the word 'Trust'.

Trust, when applied to Humans, is the confidence or assurance that one can believe the Character, Values, Integrity or Words of another Human, will produce results that are desirous and beneficial to those who 'Trust' that individual.

I have never granted my 'Trust' easily to any individual, unless they have proven over a long period of 'Time' their Trustworthiness, both in Private and Public life.

Trusting an Individual initially, is based on their record, their associations, their alliances, their 'Dogged' commitment, to do the right thing for all and NOT self serving or for the 'Expediency' of their personal agenda.

Continued Trust, is based on their 'Personal Compass', that guides them back to the original 'Course', even when they stray or become lost.

Initially, Barack Obama has 'Proven' over a long period of time that he CANNOT be 'Trusted' by the aforementioned guidelines and continues to 'Prove', almost daily, that he cannot be 'Trusted' now or in the future.

Why write about Barack Obama and the 'Fact' that he cannot be trusted, instead of Bill Clinton or George Bush or a host of others?

Well Duh!

Barack Obama is in charge, the others are History.

Clinton...amoral
Bruce you're correct he was scum and hasn't mellowed with age that's very true!

Family Values

This Liberal idea that those who support "Family Values" are hypocrits is false.

The term "Family Values" applies to "family friendly" legislation that is not destructive to families like some tax increases are, parental notification laws etc. etc.

A public official can be all for legislation that supports family values and be a train wreak in his/her personal life. One has nothing to do with the other.

When Bill Clinton supported legislation providing tax credits for Child Care, he was supporting "Family Values".

When Bush 41 supported legislation that provided for the Family Medical Leave Act, he was supporting "Family Values."

In the United States, the number one source of friction in a marriage is money. Couples under economic stress have a hard time making the marriage succeed.

Only Liberals support taking more money from married wage earners making their lives more stressful.

Unless you can walk on water...
>The 4 democrats, 1 republican, on the list were power hungry greedy jerks who didn't have the country at heart or Constitutionally Correct Values.Just self glorification.<

One can question whether Clinton allowing critical technology to be sold to China was a betrayal in payback for the enormous contributions to his political (and other)funds. But, I believe that Clinton was amoral rather than immoral with loyalty to no one or thing other than himself.

While I won't say
that in running for office today it is almost a given that you are looking to betray your office and country, that blanket statement is pretty close to the truth.

In the easiest job in the world (House/Senate), incumbents have far too much free time on their hands, time that is spent on 1) getting reelected, 2) cultivating lobbyists and their 'pay for play' schemes, 3) legislating for more and better perks for themselves, 4) figuring out who they can screw (both literally and figuratively) to advance their careers, etc.

After those important items are covered, they are then able to devote some time to actually doing the job they were elected to do (that does not necessarily include reading or understanding a bill before voting on it).

We are the ones at fault folks, we allow this to happen over and over again by not demanding clear cut standards from our politicians - just take time to contemplate the scum that continue to get voted into office (I know, I know - it's not YOUR scum, it's other people's scum).

I have purposely left party affiliation out of this comment because we are all guilty. It is not going to get any better until we demand more and better safeguards against this infestation of corruption.

Think deeper
The charge of "hypocrisy" is misused above. You actually have it backwards.

Wikipedia has a good explanation of the term.

One of Wikipedia's examples is a doctor who tells patients that smoking is unhealthy. If he believes what he says, he is NOT a hypocrite whether or not he smokes. A doctor who tells patients that smoking isn't healthy, but doesn't believe it IS a hypocrite, whether he smokes or not.

So you see, a liberal who pretends to believe in marital fidelity to garner centrist votes IS a hypocrite, not the conservative who believes in it but fails to practice it.

Betraying Your Children
When married men with underage children commit adultery, they are primarily cheating on their innocent children. When you become a parent, you are making a commitment to stand by, in person, to raise and protect your vulnerable children. To divide your heart, time, money and loyalties with a third party is completely wrong - no matter what the circumstances. No living person is immune from temptation. We all fight it on every level in every area. Real parents endure almost anything to keep their children living in an intact home to spare them the hell of divorce. After affairs and divorce, children are treated to counseling, getting to live in 2 houses, annoying, trying visitations and being told they have no right to be angry about what happened to them. And then, we all sit around and complain about the way children are turning out. These kids really need to get with the program.

Unless you can walk on water or
feed a crowd with a couple of fish and loaves of bread you probably have no room to talk.

Mark Sanfgord did what a bunch of Americans In politics or not have done ...let temptation get the better of him.

I personally don't think it was right and I feel bad for his wife and kids and have never been and adultress. That doesn't change my thoughts.

If we consider the greatest Americans Ben Franklin had a son out of wedlock and had a thing for what he described as "low" women aka prostitutes. Thomas Jefferson probably fathered some kids with one of his slaves (Sally Hemmings)

These things had nothing to do with their political carreers just their personal goof ups. or weakness' if you will. It was their beliefs in the Country that made them good politicians Mark Sanford has a lot of gumption to get the Country on the right track with small government and we need more like thinkers.

The only BAD presidents who had moral issues were James Buchanan (D) who was reported to be a homosexual and lived with his "roomate" for 20 odd years. FDR (D) who was so full of himself congress had to pass an amendment that no president could serve more than 2 terms after he broke with the precedent set by George Washington...Richard Nixon (R) power hungry liar from the get go..Then there was Bill "bad liar" Clinton (D) who wasn't enough of a man to admit he inhaled or had sex and had to be impeached.

The 4 democrats, 1 republican, on the list were power hungry greedy jerks who didn't have the country at heart or Constitutionally Correct Values.Just self glorification.

will is right
The idea that these are men who support the DOMA is ludicrous.
It IS the hypocrisy which makes their actions unforgivable and their sanctimonious objections to same sex marriage even more so.

These are men entrusted with laws and important decision making. Which their betrayals show they are incapable of. They can't protect marriage from a minority population that wants to marry (and can't), while at the same time destroying their own.

Which is exactly why the DOMA and anti gay marriage amendments from state to state obviously don't protect marriage from one of THE most destructive elements that attack it.

So there isn't much point in such laws, or for someone like Sanford to demand resignation when he's not prepared to do the same.

But corruption is actually a crime.
If you had to hire a lawyer - would you be more upset to find out that he cheated on his wife or that he cheated you on the bill?
I don't want to condone infidelity but I'm more concerned about the number of elected official that are on the take.

Unfaithful
Being unfaithful in such basic moral principles as marriage signifies a possibility of being unfaithful in leading the country, plain and simple.
Being a successful political leader does not give license to be unfaithful to one's wife and family nor does being faithful to wife and and family give license to being unfaithful to the leadership of our country.
"The One" may be "devoted and faithful" to his wife but it does not give him license to destroy our country which he is doing.
Morality is on the decline and has been for quite awhile and many of our so-called "great leaders" have been guilty of being unfaithful in many areas, both to our country and in their personal lives.
Sad.

Heart vs. Brain
I would rather have a love-lorn philandering politician who thinks with his heart in matters of love, BUT, more importantly, thinks with his brain in matters of governing, than a politician who thinks with his heart in matters concerning governing.

There's a huge difference between making decisions based on feelings, as opposed to making decisions based on thoughtful contemplation.

It's very sad that someone who is very capable of being an effective leader in politics, based on his reasoned approach (using the brain), is shot down because his feelings (the heart) led him down a self-destructive path.

The reason that people aren't holding
on to their sacred marriage vows is that they don't mean them. Or they mean them as long as it's easy. If there's work involved, forget it, Hard work never mind!!!! They swear to love a person that they don't even know. Now it takes very hard work to get to know someone and a lot of trial and error. The best way to fall in love is to become best friends first. My wife is my best friend hands down. No doubt, no mistake. We've also been married 33 years. Now you take that with the fact that we are both people of very high morals and there is a distinct chance that we will never cheat on each other.
Now to the politicians? Don't know each other, aren't good let alone best friends, and have no morals at all, or at least no more than a cat in heat!! DOOMED DOOMED I TELL YOU!!!

It makes sense, doesn't it?
The basic concept behind marriage is that it is supposed to be a major commitment, as is evidenced by the fact that someone wanting to get married has to make 'wedding vows'. People who hold political office also take vows, or rather 'oaths'. Amounts to the same thing.

When an official decides that one vow doesn't mean squat to him/her, why on earth should anyone believe that another vow means anything to them?
