Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Here's the Obama administration's plan for emptying out Guantanamo, as I understand it: Take each prisoner out of his cell. Give him a personal apology, a big kiss and an AK-47. Then hand him a free airline ticket good for any destination in the continental United States.

Maybe I've got one or two details wrong, but I'm having trouble thinking clearly right now. That's because I've been listening to politicians who have responded to the news of Gitmo's pending closure with disconcerting shrieks of panic.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was beside himself upon hearing Defense Secretary Robert Gates tell a Senate committee that the Pentagon might need to transfer 100 inmates to American soil. "The administration," announced McConnell, "needs to tell the American people how it will keep the terrorists at Guantanamo out of our neighborhoods and off of the battlefield."

How on earth could that be done? Hmmm. Maybe by locking them up in grim buildings replete with iron bars and concertina wire. Same way, in other words, it kept accused terrorists Jose Padilla and Ali al-Marri out of our neighborhoods and off the battlefield.

They were confined in a U.S. Navy brig in Charleston, S.C. That city has had the occasional murder, but none of them was committed by agents of Osama bin Laden. I'm willing to wager a week's salary that if some Gitmo alumni end up there, they will have zero effect on the crime rate.

But none of this is going to keep Republicans from opposing the relocation of the prisoners to the United States. They are advised that the issue will help them with voters, who don't want to have to worry about cutting off Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in traffic.

"This issue is at the intersection of good policy and good politics," Republican pollster Glen Bolger explained to Politico. "All in favor of having Gitmo terrorists housed in your congressional district, raise your hand. Whoa -- no hands go up!"

Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., in the party's weekly radio address Saturday, raised the possibility the detainees might be coming to "a halfway house in Missouri." To head off such threats, Republicans have introduced "The Keep Terrorists Out of America Act" -- which would forbid the president from moving the inmates to any state without first getting approval from the governor and the legislature.

It seems like only yesterday conservatives were intent on upholding the powers of the commander-in-chief against encroachment by 535 armchair generals. I'm trying to imagine the reaction if, after the 9/11 attack, Democrats had proposed legislation requiring the president to get a state's consent to send its National Guard troops to Iraq.

But some people can't be bothered with consistency when the stakes are so high. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., is apoplectic at the possibility some of the captives might be migrating to Ft. Leavenworth, in his state. This option, he lamented, would mean locals would have to "share their community … with terrorists."

Not only that, he said, but it would make their town a target for terrorists the world over. "Moving such a facility to hometown, USA will require security beyond reality," said Roberts.

From listening to Roberts, you might think he's going to be running into them at Home Depot. I don't have inside information, but I'm guessing the inmates would be bunking not at the Super 8 but at the maximum-security prison located at Ft. Leavenworth.

As for his worries about attracting terrorists, here is the interesting thing about Ft. Leavenworth: It's a U.S. Army base. With some effort, I can imagine a squad of al-Qaida operatives being able to enter the country, obtain weaponry and seize a vulnerable detention facility. But attack a military installation crawling with soldiers in hopes of springing their buddies? I suspect that would play out like the ending of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

Terrorists coming soon to my neighborhood? Thanks for the warning. I'll pass it on to Ted Kaczynski when I see him at the gym.

Oust Obama and All Liberals
Great Article Mr. Blackwell. You describe it so sublimely how corrupt and amoral Obama, Sebelius and the entire Liberal Establishment in this country are. And, these same Humane Liberals, will sit outside prisons and cry, chant, pray and moan over the impending death sentences of some who have tortured, raped and murdered children, but fully support the torture and dismemberment of unborn children without shedding a single tear for the fetus or for the would-be mother who has lost her soul, and in most cases, the taxpayers are forced to pay for these procedures that most civilzed people do not agree with.

God, help us all, if Obama and his diabolical schemes actually succeed. Obama and his entire administration and his cohorts in the U.S. Congress need to be exposed and removed from office. The only means that, We The People, have to do that is to Unite and Vote in Record numbers to replace these morally bankrupt individuals from office, and for the MSM and their talking heads such as Oprah Winfrey, The Nags on The View, and others, they need to be boycotted and their miserable shows that support and promote these Scoundrels and the Despicable Acts that they condone, will also disappear from the airwaves, and then Oprah and these other Immoral Feel Good performers can disappear into the dark shadows where they belong.

Upside Down America
Terrorists/Illegal Aliens Above The Law
In this upside-down world of Obama and Company, the only enemies of the United States are us hardworking men and women who actually support our own families, go to church, believe in traditional values, customs, traditions and the U.S. Constitution of this Great Republic.

Under the Obama regime, we have a Justice Department that believes Foreign Enemies and Terrorists have the same rights as U.S. Citizens and are protected under our constitution, while at the same time this same so-called Justice Department is trying to deny Legitimate Rights protected by our Constitution to the legitimate citizens of this country.

Under the Obama regime, they hand out all Citizen Rights including Entitlments of welfare checks, food stamps, free medical care, social security to tens of millions of illegals who have invaded our country and are driving up our unemployment rates and drive down our wage rates.

It is time that patriots get busy and demonstrate against this upside-down administration and congress who are willing to go to any lengths to gain power at the expense of the citizens and the U.S. Constitution. Illegal aliens, terrorists and other asssorted Criminals are above the Law, and we hardworking citizens are being put under the Boot of these Socialists who are busy undermining the very foundations of this nation.

Okay, Elvis. Got me there.
But it still serves my point. The only politically stupider thing than bringing these terrorists onto our soil would be to release them to Muslim custody.

So despite my lack of precision my point still holds: until Obama can come up with a plan to securely hold these jerks somewhere outside the good ol' USA, Gitmo stays open.

Ratas.....ix-xi
Ratas- I can't quite make out your spelling
to Cappie? Let me see......(you know I love
these dots)A$$..HMMM? Ha,Ha,Ha.

NO country will take in the creeps from
Gitmo? Sure? Iran,Syria,Saudi(sp) Arabia,etc.?

And the idiot that posted Bush is to blame for
Gitmo: one of the few things that Bush did
right was kill the terrorists and was instrumental in improving our security...duh!
How many cities have been "9/11" since "9/11"?
Obarfa is going to accomplish a Miracle, he is going to make Bush look half way pretty good
in about 2-3 years!
Elvis

Nancy Pelosi
is koo-koo. Koo-Koo. Koo-Koo. It would be funnier than the Three Stooges if it wasn't really happening.

Why close Gitmo at all?
Isn't this just a symbolic gesture to progressive radicals from a jester? We should make Gitmo even more productive by housing the United Nations with the terrorists and they could all be buddy-buddy together!

Since the terrorist are going into the
hood, has Obama made a specialm deal for an equal number to join both the Crips & the Bloods?

Herman in Illinois
misses the point. Pres. Bush kept us safe after 9/ll by not releasing those terrorist thugs. Now it's in somebody else's hands. God protect us!

renny
You forgot to add the predictably insufferable windbag Lon to that trifecta.

Stupidest thing I've ever read.
Okay Chapman, time to get back to your home planet now.

I can just see O following through with his promise to close the Gitmo terrorist detention facility when no nation on earth is willing to take these pieces of garbage off our hands. There'll be no rendition because no nation will take them now. These men are certified radioactive.

So O brings them here to our backyard, and people start to finally realize he's a complete nutjob.

No, O may be reprehensible but he ain't stupid. Until he's got a plan to house these terrorists somewhere NOT HERE, Gitmo stays open for business.

L C #20
You're forgetting MURTHA, who asked for them to be sent to his district.

Steve, Steve, Steve
Obamba intends to bring the 245 terrorists to the US, and make them the officers of his domestic Gestapo, and a million Mexican illegal alien criminals as the foot soldiers.

A supermarket tableau said that the angels will be fighting the Antichrist in DC. They'll find Odumbo in the WH. The angels will use their wings to fly, and Odumbo will flap his ears.

Know the Enemy
Know the Enemy
The basis of politics is religion.
Politics is the battle between good and evil.
The basis for the battle between good and evil is the salvation of the human soul; who is saved and goes to heaven, and who is damned and goes to hell.
The battle for the human soul is between the Devil or Satan, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Those allied with the Devil are Anti-Christians and they are constantly at war with Jesus Christ and his Church, the Holy Roman Catholic Church.
The enemies of Jesus Christ and His Church are those that worship the body and the material world and who are opposed to the dignity and freedom of the individual.
The Enemies of the Church and Jesus Christ are: Communists, Socialists, Atheists, Materialists, Secular Humanists, Polytheists, Pantheists, Homosexual Activists, Abortionists, Secret Societies, all Governments that prohibit free speech and free worship, and all Activists that work to suppress Christians, Christianity, and Christian morals.

Solution

Prez -- Just tell us when you're letting them out, and where they're headed. They'll be "taken care of" soon enough. Thank God for the Second Amendment.

What to do with the terrorists
send them to Korea so Kim can attach them to his hypodung missles during test flights. He still has some way to go before they hit the target and uh ...duh... I wonder what that is?

Let Obama have them at the W. H.
He's their good buddy anyhow. Let him & Michelle offer them a place to stay. Couldn't be much different then when the Clinton's rented out the Lincoln Bedroom.

IN NANCY PELOSI'S BACKYARD
HS Pelosi just gave a new conference stating that the CIA mislead and lied to Congress about enhanced interrogations.

This is her 6th spin on this situation. She is lying and we all know it. Pelosi should resign or be impeached. She is not the kind of leader we should have as House Speaker.

Hey, Herman....
Where would you have had him put them? The Big Island of Hawaii? Is that far enough from mainland U.S.A. for you? How many folks do you know who can swim 90 miles with the Navy and the Coast Guard after them?

Bush
I think we have to blame this problem on the despicable, grossly incompetent Bush.

Obviously this disgusting man never thought this through. What did he think was going to happen when we brought all the terrorists to Cuba (90 miles from the U.S.).

Organized Crime Controls the Prisons

Organized crime is almost by definition a monster with a thousand tentacles. Certainly this is true of Radical Islam.

We all believe that the Warden and the guards control the prison.
That might be true if all of the criminals in a particular organization are in prison. But they are not.

So when the important imprisoned members of a criminal syndicate need a cell phone or a change of cells what do they do. They simply instruct their (outside the prison gang members) to threaten the guard's and the guard's families. Its easy just deliver a picture of the guard's seven year old daughter going up the steps to her piano lessons. Maybe draw a target around the picture. Radical Islam can easily and believably do these things.

They can also threaten file clerk's and prosecutor's, and investigator's families. So files disappear, witnesses are not interviewed and charges dropped with little or no explanation.

Radical Islam just has one little problem at Gitmo. The problem is that these vicious criminals don't know who the guards, file clerks, investigators, and prosecutors are. So they don't know where the families live. On an isolated island preserve there is no way to find out. Take these criminals stateside and finding out will be very easy.

Its going to be a totally different ball game. The Iraqi and Afghani chickens will now indeed be coming home to roost.

There's always Devil's Island...
but I do not think it remote enough to ensure they cannot reach the mainland. How about Bikini Atoll? Maybe, if they escape, they will glow in the dark, and we can easily find them again. Or, maybe, we can let North Korea and Iran test their non-existent and not-being-developed nuclear bombs there, after we have put the detainees there. Dr. doogie, hal, ranger29, left angle and their ilk can serve as the caregivers, but, otherwise, just let the (what is Napol(eon)itano's current PC term for terrorists?) fend for themselves.

Political Opportunism
isnt just confined to the Progressive DemonRATs,
which is why the Republicrats lost so big in 'o6 and lost more in '08 and why they are so obtuse about it is beyond my comprehension. If they were truly concerned, they'd be willing to do what it takes to protect U.S. They'd push relentlessly to close and protect the Borders especially the southern one; they'd be of one accord regarding amnesty; and demand investigations regarding the so called training compounds scattered around the country. Instead they pay lipservice rather than be consistent. They won't even get in the faces of the Progressives in their own party and the DemonRats whenever they can to call them on their stupidity. No instead, they are submissive dogs, rolling over on their backs and piddling on themselves whenever Dingy snarls.

I think I saw this movie
..then Michael Vick comes to the prison & the warden talks him into quarterbacking a terrorist football team to play the guards team.

I preferred the original

Single Mom Syndrome
Mr.Chapman, this article clearly defines your upbringing by a single mom, therefore you wound up so "delicate" and confused, a true "metrosexual" of the 21st Century.

With people like you, who think they are "conservative", it won't be long before Shariah laws will prevail in our new USSA.
I, for one, see redeeming value in Shariah laws, at least we won't have to endure "metrosexuals" like yourself, dimbo Barbi wannabees strutting their sluttiness and the Homo "warriors" or even people like Nazi Pelosi. Now that would be a whiff of fresh air for this decadent, perverted society.

This article is inane!
It's biased too!

I felt like I was reading a Rachel Madoff rant from M.S.N.B.C.!

Mr. Chapman...,no Democratic politician wants them in their disrtict either. It ain't partisan!

You did not hear what the good Senators' Feinstein and Boxer said about placing them in Alcatraz? How did you miss that piece of info?

I guess the real difference between the two parties is that the Dems. have been screeching for years about the horrors of "Gitmo", and DEMANDING it be closed. Of course they never projected past their hissy fits to understand what the closing would mean. Typical of this crop of Dems..

The Republicans never called for its closure.

Don't you have an editor? How did this piece get by him?

Oh wait...,I forgot. The Fourth Estate is dead. You are no longer required to seek the truth.

What a bunch of juvenile idiots.
I recall the libtard traitors whining their sick pieholes off about Gitmo, right from the beginning. Then the lafty fruits and nuts went into action and demanded an upgrade. I don't know how many hundreds of millions were spent on Gitmo, but i got my reward as a citizen.
I got too see all the pretty pictures of "the new facility" congress spent gazillions on.
Then came the torture whining.
Well, I really don't care.
I had flat out expected interrogations then executions. I started to wonder what was wrong when I didn't hear the sad, dejected news that another half dozen terrorists were executed at Gitmo agains today.
I guess the final answer is " NO YOU BUILT THE NEW FACILITY WHINING AND MOANING THE TERRORISTS NEEDED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF, NOW YOU'VE GOT A BRAND SPANKING NEW 1000 TERRORIST'S INN, AND YOU WANT TO EMPTY IT - TO overcrowded prisons on the mainland.
What a bunch of juvenile idiots.
Could anything as wasteful be imagined or conjured up out of thin air ?
Hey, you idiots in Congress took our money and built the brand spanking new Gitmo - NOW YOU'RE STUCK WITH IT YOU GOD FOR SAKEN COMMUNIST RETARDS!

As for Chapman
In his rush to be a wiseass and pile on the GOP, he is ignoring the fact that Obama does not have a plan for closing GTMO in place at all! He issued his executive order to close the detention camp, then started slapping panels and commissions together to figure out what he wants to do...and he instituted a 1 year window to study the issues involved, formulate his plans, and execute them. Does anyone really expect that to work?

And when was the last time that we housed terrorists or enemy combatants with civilian prisoners? How about never! And the problem with what Chapman says about the others who were tried here is twofold: First, those people were tried and convicted in civilian courts, and were then sentenced to time in civilian prisons. In the case of the GTMO detainees, they have not been tried (and the administration has no idea of when or how they will be) so they should not be held in civilian jails or military brigs. Also, in the previous cases there were individuals on trial, not a group of over 200 to be dealt with. And since the SCOTUD weighed in last year, the prisoners generally have to be kept together in the jurisdiction of the appeals court they originally dealt with. You can't just send them all over the place willy-nilly!

Finally, it has not been just the GOP taking on the administration on this issue. I seem to recall that David Obey was just making headlines about the issue, and he is certainly no Republican. If there is nothing else that the two parties can agree on, they can agree that housing the GTMO detainess in American jails or military brigs is not a good idea.

Actually lilly
Actually the Obama administration has said that some of the detainees could be released into the US. The WSJ reported on 19 March 2009 that AG Holder said this: "[For] people who can be released there are a variety of options we have and among them is the possibility that we would release them into this country." Keep in mind that these people are considered too dangerous by their home nations to be readmitted, but the adminstration is seriously considering releasing them into our country!

And if you weren't such a predictable liberal ninny, you would understand that when the writer used those words he was not usig his own words, but was relaying what others have said. As a matter of fact, if your reading comprehension skills were any good, you would understand that he is actually arguing your point!

Is Chapman an Idiot?
Here's the problem with moving the Gitmo prisoners to locations in the USA.

The USA has poorly secured borders. It's easy to enter the country illegally and people are free to move about the country once they get in. It would be much easier for terrorists to attempt to rescue prisoners in the USA than at Gitmo. Gitmo is isolated. It's not easily attacked.

Get it?

Gitmo, Terrorists & Us
The president has said he will close Gitmo as a detention center and he will. The world opinion demands it and heaven knows, we wouldn't want to go against world opinion. After all, once we have them happy with us again, they'll be more than willing to help out in our war against Muslim extremists. Just look at all the help we have been given in Afghanistan.
We can incarcerate them here in the U.S., but that alone affords them certain prisoner rights including visitation, which will most assuredly include the ACLU. Also, there are Muslim populations already present in our prisons and we are talking people already an anathema to society.
Of course, we can rent a prison somewhere else, like in outer Mongolia perhaps. Again, this would still include prisoner rights issues but at least the ACLU will help with the economy with all those plane tickets back-n-forth.
Hey, why not release them back from where we got them in the first place. After being released, our responsibility ends. After all, once a Mafia guy serves his term, he is released back into the arms of his fellow gangsters. Can't be responsible once that happens can we?
To be fair, we do need to have concrete evidence that everyone we're retaining was a combatant and not just Freddy's rival warlord in Afghanistan. Who really cares if we release some that should have been retained? That is the price we pay for our justice system. Just look at all the "regular" criminals we release here in the good ole USA every day that wind right back in prison after committing some mayhem or other.

There is no place to TRANSFER
them. Ninnies.

They are not US citizens.

They cannot be brought to civil/criminal trial on US soil.

They would recruit and corrupt any regular prison.

I think we should send them to Lily, Ranger 29, and Hal. They know all the answers. They can be the Gitmo Three and solve all their hero's the Big O's problems by taking the detainees off his impotent hands.

won't be able to hold them
If taken to US prison system, they could be released because they were not Mirandized or other rules we have with regards to convicting someone.

Also, I agree that they would be excellent recruiters. The radical Muslims living in our neighborhoods already are.

As for the Chinese Muslims, they are haters of America and very radical. The previous post made it sound like they were peaceful.

Before closing Gitmo, these and other issues must be addressed, but this administration is hell-bent on closing it quickly for appearance's sake. Heaven help us.

Is Our Prison System So Useless?
Note the language used in this article to describe the destination of Guantanamo prisoners if transferred to mainland USA:

1. "a free ticket to any US destination" (implies, destination of their choice).

2. "our neighborhoods"

3. "our community"

4. "hometown USA".

Has Obama said he would RELEASE these prisoners, or that he would TRANSFER them? And are we now a nation so weak that we have no competent prisons on US soil? Somehow we have managed to keep Charles Manson and John Wayne Gacy under lock and key; neither was sent to "a halfway house" or to camp in a citizen's back yard. Do townhall's avid readers of fear-mongering never catch on to the authors' careful choice of inflammatory language?

good column
Chapman has a difficult job here, he is trying to satirize people who are busy satirizing themselves. That makes it hard on all satirists.

What is funny is how strained are the arguments that we can't keep these prisoners in a maximum security prisoner as if they were the supervillain Bullseye able to break out of jail with a paperclip.

I also like the idea that these inmates are hypnotists who are going to turn the entire prison polulation into al qaeda agents. Why do conservatives seem to believe that our enemies are so much better at everything than the US is. The US is the most dominant country in the world, and the right seems to think we are the Keystone Kops.

wmou is right that we have the problem that some of the gitmo inmates are not actually guilty of anything. But that is hardly a reason to keep them indefinitely at Gitmo. It is also true that we are likely never going to be able to prove the guilt of the guilty because the idiots who favored torture tainted such cases.

But we do not benefit from addressing such situations by keeping ourselves outside of the rules that we demand every other country follow.

It is true that closing Gitmo was less important that ending the policies that surrounded Gitmo. But there will have to be a lot of things done to undo the harm the Bush administration did to the US. And closing Gitmo is not likely to be the worst of it.

Oh, I know....
How about this: BO just changes his mind--like he did with the photos--and keep Gitmo open. It seems that there is no better solution after all. Or, maybe the weekend of good publicity it will bring is worth all this.

eric blair
I like your comments. Obama the supposed messiah has his heart strings pulled with these POS terrorist in Gitmo. I sure as heck don't want them on US soil. I would rather see them wacked then bring them here.

Steve Chapman disappointe me
with this article. I used to think he was a serious writer.

Trivializing terrorism is not serious writing. Making stand-up comedy jokes about killing Americans is not serious writing. Throwing stones at one's opponents to divert attention is not serious writing. Sorry, Steve: you just lost this reader.

Even
Even some dimwitted liberals can see the potential impact of the White House Kenyan Resident's plan for these terrorists. If they are going to be moved to the United States, why not put them in Chicago where they will easily blend in with the other gangs!

Chapman misses the 2 biggest problems.
Some of the detainees are not guilty of anything except being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are some Chinese Muslims that would be free now if there was some place to send them. If returned to their home countries they will likely be tortured and killed.

The second and most serious problem is that once on US soil, they will have access to the civilian court system and many would not be found guilty. Then they would have to be freed but no country will take them.

I'd rather strap a parachute on them and drop them back into their home countries than allow them on US soil.

Gitmo is one of Bush's biggest screw up and there were thousands. Now how do we clean it up without putting US citizens in danger?

Steve, try thinking outside the box
or should that be "outside the cell".

There are many reasons why these terrorists should not be jailed within our borders.

A key one you are missing is that these thugs are masters of recruitment. You put them in a jail amongst the general population of easily manipulated prisoners (you know, obama voters) and now you've created a breeding ground for home grown terrorism.

Cappie a$$

Chappie, I think you are an a$$.

Not a joke
Chapman you seem to think this is some kind of joke,be assured when the dieing starts, not even you will be laughing.

What occurs to me`is that the author is
probably correct. They can be contained, but that is not the point. They shouldn't be here and involved in our criminal justice system.

As far as the Republicans are concerned, they are despicable. These creeps refused to close our bordes and there is no telling how many terrorists have entered America across those open borders. I'd like to see them all locked up together.

Missing the point
I think the concern is that, if they're on U.S. soil, even in prisons, they'll wind up with all the constitutional protections of American citizens, to which they are in no way entitled. Presuming that would happen, who knows how our imaginative federal courts would further insert themselves into the situation? The sky's the limit!

In ignoring this point and doing so with his jocular remarks, Chapman demonstrates anew that he is a wiseass lightweight.
