Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

An open letter to the people of Iowa, from the people of Illinois:

Dear Neighbors:

Being proud citizens of the Hawkeye State, you are all probably still basking in the glory of helping our own Barack Obama's quest for the presidency by giving him a victory in the Iowa caucuses. As fellow Midwesterners, let us say: Nice work. In four years, Washington may be changed beyond recognition. But knowing the depth of public spirit in Iowa, let us also say: Your work is not finished.

As you may have noticed if you ever get the news on WGN, Obama was not quite able to transform our state during his time in the legislature. It's as ethically imperfect as ever, if not more so. How bad? Put it this way: If an Illinois politician moved into a pigsty, the pigs would leave in disgust.

Anyone watching from another state must be amazed by the amount of graft that is regularly on view here. It's enough to shock even people in Louisiana -- where after Hurricane Katrina, one Bayou wag said half the state was under water and the other half was under indictment.

This year has had a full quota of seamy developments. Our former governor, George Ryan, remains in prison after failing to win a presidential pardon. A onetime top aide to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is about to go on trial for his alleged role in a fraudulent city hiring scheme. A former Chicago alderman got sentenced to four years in prison for demanding bribes from local developers.

Our new U.S. senator, Roland Burris, faces a Senate ethics investigation after repeatedly changing his story about how he got appointed to the seat by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. That's the same governor who was recently impeached and removed from office for allegedly trying to sell that Senate seat for his own benefit.

We would like to say this is unusual, but it's really about as unusual as a cold day in February. Since 1970, according to a report done at the University of Illinois at Chicago, 1,000 people have been convicted of public corruption -- including three governors, 19 Cook County (Chicago) judges and 30 members of the Chicago City Council.

It may surprise you to learn that Illinois does not rank as the least honest state in the country. According to an analysis of federal data on the 35 most populous states by the Corporate Crime Reporter, we come in 6th in public corruption convictions per capita. But after the Blagojevich scandal broke, editor Russell Mokhiber said he was reconsidering. "If there was a BCS for corruption," he admitted, "I think right now you'd have to put Illinois in the title game."

That is not something Iowa would or could ever aspire to. CCR named Iowa the second least corrupt place in America, trailing only Oregon. Head west across the Mississippi River, and you are transported from Sodom to the Celestial City.

"Iowa political scandal" is an oxymoron. The worst one you've had recently was when the governor's wife was seen smoking in a state vehicle. Imagine that! In Illinois, we're happy if the governor's wife is not caught using a state vehicle as a getaway car in a bank robbery.

Illinois could learn a lot from seeing how things are done in Iowa. But let's face it: We've been located right next door ever since Iowa became a state in 1846, and we haven't learned anything yet.

So what can we do? Stop trying to clean up Illinois and let somebody else do it, and that somebody is you. We propose that the honest, decent folks of Iowa annex us, vote out all our grifters, shysters, thieves, extortionists, bagmen, flunkies and mopes, and replace them with clean-cut, plain-spoken guardians of the public interest -- of which you have a surplus.

It's a win-win deal, giving each state what it currently lacks. We'd get good government and honest politicians. You'd get major league baseball, Lake Michigan, great airline service, restaurants that serve something fancier than meatloaf, and the kind of nightlife you can't find in Oskaloosa.

We're confident that given this opportunity to spread the blessings of Iowa to less fortunate souls, you'll do it out of the goodness of your simple, honest, cornfed hearts. And if that's not sufficient motivation -- well, we have some friends who could make it worth your while.

Chicago, Chicago, That Toddlin' Town
Ah, but then Chicago wouldn't be Chicago. What a history we have! What a culture! Al Capone, John Dillinger, Daddy Daley, the St Valentine's Day Massacre...all Iowa has is cornfields and churches. Jeez. My favorite Chicago corruption story is from a friend who moved into office space in a city building that still had a human person driving the elevator (how's that for featherbedding?). The first time he got on the elevator and named his floor, say it was the 8th floor, the elevator operator held out his hand, palm upwards, and said, "I don't usually stop on the eighth floor". Chicago. Ya gotta love it.

WAY too tongue in cheek...
I love the concept of Ill. being ABLE to convince the slow, gullible cornfed people of Iowa to annex them--but it will never happen ;o)
Farmers have had to cope with poor results for hard diligent labor for so long; that they recognize from a mile away people who will never do what they say.
Nice try, but they ain't that stupid!

Too late Chapman
They've already come up with a better scheme. Send their rotten pols to DC. I can hardly wair. Detroit, LA, NOLA, DC and Chicago style govt coast to coast. Move over Barry, Hastings, Nagin, Kilpatrick, Jefferson and Burris. You're small time now. We have the big enchilada.

Chapman wrote
"Head west across the Mississippi River, and you are transported from Sodom to the Celestial City."

I guess he forgot that Californication is still part of US.

We'll take Dixon and her neighbors
We're all being annexed by the District of Columbia, so what's the point?

Chapman develops a voice after 25 years
I lived in Illinois, Cook County for 45 years and it has always been corrupt. Read John Kass' columns and he seems to be the only reporter who is willing to risk himself exposing these crooks.
Suddenly, as the world , finally, discovers the extent of the corruption Chapman awakes!
Where have the feeble journalists been all these years? If I and everyone I know is aware of the corruption why does it continue?
Durbin, Daley, Madagan, Stroger, any Jackson, Emil Jones, Blagojevish, Rostenkoski, the list is endless but they keep getting elected.
Why aren't the people of Illinois demanding an open election so the most honorable person can win instead of another corrupt democrat in Daley's pocket?
If you think for one moment Obama, Manuel and any other Illinois politician is clean you are a fool!

Chicago
They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys.

And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again.

And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.

Carl Sandburg- 1916

Illinois advantages?
I'll rather stick with meatloaf.

yeah
I moved from Iowa to here in Denver this last summer. I'm still a HUGE hawkeye fan and will always be.

Iowa disappointed me this election though. There are many reasons why I won't move back there.

Most of us have been to Chicago...
...and don't want any part of it. Illinois can keep their Blago, Daly, Obama's, Wright, Fleger, Jackson, Farakhan, Rezko and Oprah too.
Actually, we should look into closing the border with Illinois.
Oh yeah, we cant do that even with countries. I forgot.

In Milwaukee
it was always understood that Chicago and Northern Ill were corrupt. After all, they "selected, not elected" JFK in 1960.

Actually, I think if you look at the original scheme for the Old Northwest, Chicago would have been part of Wisconsin. But as states were created, the original scheme was broken up starting with Ohio's grab of Toledo (guess it made sense at the time) and that set off the dominoes until Wisconsin, the last state of the Northwest, got what was left over (having lost not only Chicago, but also the "upper peninsula" and Minneapolis).

Why pick on Illinois?
Why pick on Illinois? It seems to me that there is plenty of corruption to go around.

I paid for some of his pabulum

Now you don't have to read much history to find corrupt politicians, of any and all stripes. Recently as I watched the Mayor of Chicago on TV, I remembered that I paid for some of his pabulum.

Sixty years ago, when his father was the Cook County Clerk, I had to visit his office to pick up a copy of some official document. The sign said — fill out the form, it will cost $3.

I filled out the form, placed $3 with it and pushed it across the counter. The man on the other side angrily pushed it back at me. I read it again to make sure it was correct, and pushed it again. This time I was afraid he was going to jump the counter and attack me, but I noticed the next person at the counter pushed 5 singles across the counter, and that was that.

I took the hint and watched him open the cash register drawer and put in the three dollars, then open a large wooden drawer and put the two singles in with what looked like hundreds of other bills of various sizes. And the current Mayor’s pabulum was paid for that day.

I could tell of the $5,000 payment that eliminated the need for a fire escape in a building being remodeled, but I’ll let you guess what happened. It was something like keeping a $20 bill paper-clipped to your driver’s license.

Don’t think voting machine problems are anything new. Sixty-five years ago I wandered into a meeting near Chicago where they were discussing which cog wheel they were going to install in the manual voting machines, so that enough, but not too many votes, were transferred from “the other” candidate, to theirs.

Illinois...and Bust!
The bad news is, there is total corruption in that state. The good news is, EVERYONE is now aware of the depth of corruption in politics.
Personally, I'm going to move to the first state that cecedes from the new Socialist Obamaland. The states that cecede will continue to honor the Constitution, Bill of Rights, flag and laws of the 'original' United States of America.
We will build borders, we will open businesses, we will drill for oil, we will elect and provide term limits for Senators, Congressmen, Supreme Court Justices, and all other politicians who decide to try o lie to and live off of the American People.
Schools will once again teach the history of the United States, along with geography, penmanship, literature, ENGLISH, math and yes, even shop. We will give out appropriate grades, praise the winners and work with those who came in last. We will teach manners and speak to our children about the perils of jail, teenage pregnancy, lying and cheating. There will be consequeces for bad behavior.
Oh, I can't wait for the day when I once again become a part of my country.
