Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Barack Obama's campaign mantras were "change we need" and "change we can believe in." His victory, and the enthusiasm of his more ardent supporters, may suggest that Americans dream of doing what Thomas Paine proposed we do in 1776: "begin the world over again." In fact, underlying the vote is yearning to return to how things were before: before the Iraq war, before torture, before the housing bust, before the recession.

Also before George W. Bush, who has a way of reminding people why Bill Clinton, for all his wretched foibles, left office with a 65 percent approval rating. As Hillary Clinton was fond of saying of her husband's critics during this campaign: "What part of the 1990s didn't they like -- the peace or the prosperity?"

Ronald Reagan came into office in 1980 assuming he had an electoral mandate to diminish the size of government. Once there, he found that Americans are a conservative people -- in the sense of wanting to conserve what they have, especially any benefits they get from Washington. Result: The welfare state survived with little change. Obama may likewise discover that the appetite for new policies is smaller than it appears.

In his speeches, the candidate spent more time extolling the need for change than specifying exactly what form it should take. His calculated imprecision allowed voters to assume that the change he was offering was pretty much the same as the change they wanted.

As in 1980, Americans are enduring economic pain that makes them amenable to notions they might once have rejected. It's safe to assume that, like then, Americans are ready to experiment with moving in the direction the new president favors -- in this case, toward a more activist government. But it's also safe to assume that 1) they are in no mood for drastic steps that require sacrifice on their part and 2) they will support new initiatives only if they, you know, work.

Obama, as it happens, won by offering voters the same thing Reagan promised: tax cuts. Most of those who supported him did so on the assumption that they would not fall in the class of people who will have to cough up more to the IRS.

Not only that, but many voted against McCain partly because Obama successfully branded his health-care program as a tax increase. Americans are willing to embrace a bigger and more expensive federal government on one condition: that it doesn't cost them anything.

In this respect, the president-elect promises a continuation of the last eight years. With the exception of the recession brought on by the financial crisis, the biggest challenge is a vast array of commitments that have outgrown our willingness to pay for them. Living within our means is not a change Americans can quite believe in. Like Bush, Obama may hope to escape two terms without taking action on that front.

Of course, Obama would not have been the obvious choice if the goal were preservation of the entire status quo. His promises to abandon President Bush's policies on Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, the treatment of enemy captives, health care and wiretapping contributed greatly to his success.

The most notable change he will bring, though, is the most visible one: putting an African-American in the Oval Office. But that is in large part a validation of changes that have already occurred. It's no longer a novelty that some of our most admired public figures -- Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods, Colin Powell, Denzel Washington -- are black.

In this respect, the presidency is a lagging indicator of racial progress. But Obama's uniqueness will make it hard to portray him as moving too slowly to bring about change. His face alone will rebut the charge.

What his admirers and his enemies have in common is overestimating how much change he would, or can, bring about. Obama is an inspiring figure, but also a shrewd conventional politician who leaves the windmill-tilting to others. He is likely to resemble Bill Clinton, without the appetites and immaturity: a pragmatic incrementalist wary of being pulled too far left.

That would probably be fine with most voters, who may love the rhetoric of change but really miss the way things used to be.

Fooled you too, eh Steve?
He promised to fix whatever you don't like and someone else will pay for it. That's "change". "Health care" was the main thing he actually promised, but what everyone heard was "free health care". Of course, we already have that in this country and I have the unpaid charges for my son, who is a junkie living on the streets, for various hospital stays totalling about 80 thousand dollars and not all at Parkland -- the "free" hospital in Dallas. One 25,000 dollar stay was at Baylor which is the destination of choice for many people who travel 100's of miles to dallas to PAY for their care. Of course, almost NONE of the people who heard "free health care" are going to qualify for it or get it. What they will get is drastically inferior health care and THAT's a promise.

THE GREAT WHITE NATION OF OBAMA
LOOK AT HIS ECONOMIC TEAM, HIS TRANSITION TEAM LOOK LIGHT IN THE REPRESENTATION OF MINORITIES COMPARED TO THE BUSH TEAM. THE MEDIA WILL NOT WRITE ABOUT THIS OCCURANCE. CLINTON HAD MINORITIES ON HIS TEAMS AS DID BUSH 41, REAGAN AND CARTER. SO MAYBE WHEN OBAMA TALK ABOUT MAKING AMERICA GREAT AS IT WAS LONG AGO HE WILL BRING BACK THE ERA OF REPRESENTING ALL THE BLACK RACE, HIMSELF.

Re; By God, that will show those folks who voted for Obama a thing or two.

Hope springs eternal, I guess.

Ah...not with these folks, for they hope for failure.

Now what could be more "American" than that?

Come on dude. We are just trying to be exactly like the good Dems that supported 'W' all these years. If it was 'American' for you why can't it be 'American' for us..???

My USA is Fading to White

Under the rule of King Obama and his royal family, we true conservatives will witness the progression from Star Spangled Banner to the white flag of surrender and appeasement. We will be there when the National Security Force comes for our guns and homes in the name of the State. We will die defending the Constitution as written with the blood of our forefathers in the aftermath of the King’s broad confiscation, taxation and censorship of any opposing view. We will watch as our country sinks under the waves of stifled innovation, retarded growth and stagflation. Our monetary system will become even more of a joke on itself and the net worth of most Americans will be nothing because all will be the state’s property and permission to live there will only be given to supporters of the socialist manifesto as prescribed by Princess Nancy and Prince Harry. The socialist government redistributors will then step in and rule every aspect of your lives. This is the scary vision of the future under the rule of King Obama and his royal court. Now I understand that old Che slogan that every liberal loves to quote, “One man’s Terrorist is another man’s Freedom Fighter.” In these times we may get to see that being said by conservatives very soon.

Chapman is on Obama Weed
This column is so wrong on so many levels it is not possible to correct them all. Obama will not be pulled left, he is left. Left of Saul Alinsky, Franklin Davis and R. Kahalidi, his socialist -communist mentors. Bought and paid for by the Daily Kos and Moveon.org, he has no choice to but rule from the extreme left. Taken together with Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Shumer, Murtha, and the rest of the congressional dingleberries, he will be out dismantling our intelligence community, Gitmo, criticizing our military and reducing it to a police force. Not to mention undermining our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and spending more money than Bush ever dreamed. Oh, he will also let the tax cuts expire, raise capital gains, bring back confiscatory inheritance taxes and give the proceeds taken from the industrious to the welfare rolls,

Your claim at any time to be conservative was just blown apart like a car over an IED. Why don't you apply to the NY Times or Washington Post. They will love you.

Just What is in That Koolaid?
And why are so many (so called)conservative pundits and leaders drinking it?

There must have been something subliminal in that message in the park last week.
I am really glad I didn't watch.

oprah,says hope won!
dear oprah,hope is not obama!read psalm 108 verse 12.

the winds of change!?
i hope we are still standing!katrina was a mild breeze!we all need to pray!when obama yells we are the ones,he dont mean us conservatives!

Everybody sing...
The Messiah's Children's Chorus:

"He's gonna change it and re-arrange it.....Obama's gonna change the world".

Where exactly ...
... was Chapman taking this column?????

Chapman
This is one of the most convoluted columns I ever read - well at least on Townhall.

Obama Isn't African-American!
It frosts me that the media isn't tell the truth about his race. They pulled the African-American "race card" so the American people could feel guilty and vote and feel that they've vindicated America and paid back their debt to the Afro-Americans who are now 1) Oprah first billionaire woman and first billionair Black African-American woman; 2) Olympic stars, 3) Multi-millionaire athletes, 4) Movie Stars, 5) Multi-millionaire rap stars, 6) talk show hosts, 7) living in the same lifestyle as the rest of America, some rich, some middle class, some upper middle class living in Obama's neighborhood; and a few of various breeds extremely wealthy! So, why did we have to vote for someone who hasn't stated to the public, "I am a natural born U.S. citizen. I was born in Hawaii. I am providing my live birth certificate and my citizenship papers to the Department of Justice for review so I can put this matter to rest?" He's Bi-racial. He's Black and White. He doesn't represent the Afro-American people who live in poverty or didn't have equal civil rights before the 60s. He was groomed and taken well care of and still is so he doesn't know their pain. I guess, we must start searching for the next American Indian candidate for 2012 as well as the next woman candidate because fair is fair and national security background checks about questionalbe character behaviors doesn't matter after all in America! Does that mean that after Obama hands out legal driver's licenses to illegal people that they, too, can run for U.S. President?

Change? How about none
Obama is going to be in an impossible situation. It won't be long before blacks will be telling him he sold them out.

They all think they are going to be able to go over their local social services office and pick up new checks every month as it is. Because they are persecuted. It's the easy excuse for doing absolutley nothing.

Then again, he may take Bill Cosby's tack - instill in them the need to put forth effort and strengthen the family at home with some normalcy. Then he'll be criticized like Bill Cosby was as uncaring and inconsiderate.

I wouldn't want to be in his shoes. He cannot possibly go on a spending spree in this economic environment created by Dems in Congress and their need to pander to their base for votes " a home for everyone, a chicken in every pot"......he is 4 and out.

Ideology
How comforting it must be to hew to an ideology, whether far right or far left. Means we only need to digest what's fed to us. No one never asks us to think for ourselves.

I'm not a radical, on either side of the political spectrum. So perhaps my post simply doesn't belong here.

Nearly 90% of those Americans polled think America is headed on the wrong direction. And nearly 80% disapprove of the way President Bush is doing his job. A nearly equal number disapprove of how Congress is handling its duties. Which part of those numbers do you not understand?

The new President faces enormous challenges. Some of his proposed solutions will clash sharply with far left-far right orthodoxy.

Let dogma eat dogma, I say.

A Lame Attempt to Lower Expectations
Remember, Obama ran promising a 'radical transformation' of America, promising to 'perfect' America, tax cuts and handouts for everyone and all at the expense of the 'rich'.

Now that Obama has won the election and cannot possibly deliver on his promises, his sycophants are out trying to lower the expectations Obama created. It isn't going to work.

Two terms? Try one.

Connect the dots

The Obama picture is becoming clearer each day. LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE:

Obama met with Iraq's Maliki in July 2008 and began or tried to negotiate with him BEFORE he was president.

In July 2008, at the same time the Bush administration was negotiating a still elusive agreement to keep the U.S. military in Iraq, OBAMA TRIED TO CONVINCE IRAQI LEADERS IN PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS THAT THE CURRENT PRESIDENT, GEORGE W. BUSH, SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO ENACT THE DEAL WITHOUT CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL.

A few weeks before the Nov. 4 election Obama threw conservative reporters off of his plane.

In October 2008 VP candidate Joe Biden predicted an international crisis would be staged in 2009 to test Obama after he became president, and predicted that people in the U.S. would not like the way Obama handles it. First time in known history that a VP candidate has made such a prediction about his presidential running mate.

On Nov. 8, 2008, President-elect Barack Obama's private conversation with Poland's president created an international disagreement, with President Lech Kaczynski saying Obama promised to continue a missile-defense system and the transition office saying the Democrat made no such commitment.

A CHANGE THAT IS NEEDED

.....CHAPMAN ...I think you need to get your nurse to "change" your depends ...they are beginning to reek .....COLOSSUS

Nov 4 2008…Judgment Day…

First, I would like to congratulate Obama for the greatest of victories. I hope and pray that he is able to keep this country together as “One Nation under God”.

He got his moneys worth from the Democrat Party Machine, ACORN, and all the other supporters of his campaign. Lies and deception won-out this time and once the truth is known President Obama will have a lot of explaining to do and will become history’s answer to; “WHY DID AMERICA IMPLODE ON ITS SELF”.

This election maybe a “first”, Obama will be this country’s first black president, but it certainly is not ground-shaking. It only confirms what many have known for years, the white-against-black racism is a relic of our past. And is only used by the race-baiters such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to extort money and favors for themselves; and to keep African-Americas dependent on the Democrats and Governments that will continue to “take from Peter and give it to Paul”, Paul will always vote for a Government that continues this policy.

Now…(I hope I am wrong)…Let the revolution begin with…”WE THE PEOPLE”, have decided that our founding fathers were wrong. Their principles, ideals and their American Dream flawed. “WE THE PEOPLE” have decided that the Socialist principles, ideals and the Marxist Dream are a much better way.

I find it unbelievable that America would elect an unknown far left Liberal/Socialist as President of these United States of America. What have we done? Do we realize that we just enabled a far left Liberal/Socialist agenda upon ourselves? Our forefathers must be turning over in their graves. Mr. “HOPE AND CHANGE” with a total lack of grit will, both at home and aboard; be tested early and often. What if he fails these tests? Then WHAT…? Can we afford his failures?

some wishful thinking here.
There is a lot right in Champman's column. People want success without sacrifice. Whether they will accept sacrifice on the way to success is unclear.

But it is amusing that Chapman takes Obama to be closer to his own opinions than Obama portrayed himself to be. Obama ran on an expansion of health care, not just an objection to McCain's health care plan. But since that does not fit with Chapman's libertarianism he seems to be hoping that Obama will simply drop it.

I agree that Obama will be cautious in what he pushes. But I doubt he will restrict himself to only pushing things Chapman is comfortable with.

Most admired?
What?

I'm tired of the race-pandering nonsense - especially columnists who say, "some of my best friends are black." And since when is one "of our most admired public figures" Colin Powell? He was briefly admired and respected when he kicked Hussein out of Kuwait. He lost our admiration and respect when he failed to go all the way to Baghdad to rid the world of the thug in 1991. Powell's nonsensical and illogically-argued endorsement of Obama moved him even further down the list of respected Americans.

If the author believes Obama fears being "pulled too far left," he's been smoking some of Obama's leftover cocaine. The guy hasn't even been sworn in yet and he's already working on reversing executive orders that would allow oil driling in Utah, and his change.org web site had to be quickly re-worded when people made a fuss about it saying Obama would REQUIRE national service for all people aged 18-25 (a rqeuirement which, by the way, Rahm Emanuel endorsed in a book he wrote a few years ago).

Obama will not only veer left, he'll dislocate a shoulder he'll do it so quickly.

"If Obama Wins..." at:

All those enthusiastic youngsters
who voted for Obama won't be so happy in the years ahead when their standard of living is lowered, as jobs are difficult to find, as much of their earnings go to pay off the tremendous debt incurred by the bailouts that seem to continue. Making this all worse, is Obama's desire to use great sums of American money filtered to that great institution the UN to fight global poverty. The head of the UN has already signaled an immediate meeting to coordinate efforts.

Lets also consider the economic impact of Obama's desire to ignore domestic drilling and push for the alternative energy he sees in 10 years but which we know if beyond that. Oil will go up again and we will be hit hard.

THE CONSTITUTION
It's about the constitution aka WE the people find these truths.

Why is this Guy on TH?
Oh yes, the good old 90’s; Kobarg Towers, the USS Cole and our Embassy’s attacked world wide. Chapman fully admits Obama ran on tax cuts primarily a Republican issue and blasts President Bush for doing the things that kept us safe post 9/11. What ignorant people such as Chapman don’t understand if Americans and American interests are not protected world wide the other issues are meaningless. Obama will treat terrorist as criminals and hamper the ability of our intelligence services to gather vital information.

Chapman is part of the Chicago machine cheering for Obama. If I wish to read his liberal rhetoric I can go to the Huffington Post.

Why Wall Street Changed Its Mind About
Socialism

Recently I heard that Obama received a larger amount of dollars from Wall Street than did McCain.

Of course, this might shock some people, unless...

Unless you think GLOBALLY!

In case anyone didn't notice, jobs have been leaving America like rats leaving a sinking ship. There is a huge taxation burden on American corporations, which makes it attractive for them to do business elsewhere.

Socialist Canada has been luring American jobs for years. They cut corporate taxes, and shift the burden of nationalized healthcare and the welfare state onto the shoulders of the ordinary people, making it a corporate-friendly environment. No bennies to provide for the workers: the government pays for it.

And look at Communist China, where the people are so empoverished from their corrupt system that there is lots and lots of cheap labor!

Why not create a world-wide socialist state, that evolves into corporate feudalism? Make America into a third-world cesspool, and as long as the executives and movie stars get to live in their gold-plated ghetto, who cares about the fate of Joe the Plumber?

Certainly not Obama, whose goons set about demonizing the man ASAP.

Thus, the mystery is solved. Wall Street loves Obama, because his economic principals will finish off the middle class and make the corporations happy to return to the United States.

Goodbye Constitution
is the change when the people can elect a President without a legal birth certificate and born in Kenya.

With people still signing the petition to request a COLB and the judges keep dismissing show "We the People" have no say. People need to wake up and take this serious.

Hide your assets....
I advise all patriots to hide, shelter your money and assets, for Barry "Teleprompter Jesus" Obambi has got his Messiah-like eyes on it. For His "O"-liness believes firmly that government's purpose is to take from the producers to redistribute to his favorite constituencies, i.e., "inner city folk". And of course, the illegal alien "community".

Also, consider signing up for social programs, i.e., welfare. There are soooo many duplicated social programs that surely there are a few that we all qualify for. Drain this "Fedzilla" government. It is sick and getting sicker.

Government is the problem. Rule by elitist lawyers, yeah that sounds good to me. Lead me Obamessiah!!

wisdom not change
Obama and his followers can only be defined as a group, a mass-movement, not as Americans. Any group (Dem)(Lib)(Marx)(Soc)(Com) who would choose to so drastically change our country, obviously no longer identifies with what it truly means to be American.

Obama will never unite Americans, conservatives will continue to stay grounded in GOD because it’s in our nature that we work hard and be spiritually and morally balanced as individual American who makes up this great country.

The mass-minded mob who voted for him is far from unified, they live and die by the group mentality, and they are divided race, creed, and color, far left loons, socialists, Marxist and full blown communists.
They fight among themselves for their master’s(the States) attention as much as they fight with us.
(See prop 8 Cal)

Conservatives come in three shapes and sizes, moderate, centrist and far right. The difference is, for the most part we are all willing to meet in the middle as long as we can maintain our virtues, principles and morals and above all justice within the structure of our Constitution and laws.
All it takes for people to start a revolution. Lost faith in the courts,(already happening) the police, or in Marxist Obama’s case (civilian security force) and high taxation. All that mixed with freeborn people and see what happens.

Memo to Chapman
The only do-over the world ever got was the Great Flood. Yet sin still reigns in the hearts of men, and always will. The Clintonista hubris about the peace and prosperity of the '90s galls me. How many times did Clinton have Bin Laden in his sights and let him go? He was too busy with his broken zipper, I guess. This is the kind of analysis we get from self-appointed illuminati like Chapman. He needs a vacation.

What drivel from Chapman...
Face the facts Chapman, BJ Clinton's very good economy in the 2nd half of the 90's was the direct result of....(to quote Barry-boy) um, eh, ah, ... THE INTERNET, duh.

Anyone who actually thinks presidents have more than the smallest effect on the economy are naive fools, who don't have a command of their own lives.

As Peter Hitches said in England...

"The night America changed: Barack and Michelle Obama in Chicago

It already has all the signs of such a thing. The newspapers which recorded Obama’s victory have become valuable relics. You may buy Obama picture books and Obama calendars and if there isn’t yet a children’s picture version of his story, there soon will be.

Proper books, recording his sordid associates, his cowardly voting record, his astonishingly militant commitment to unrestricted abortion and his blundering trip to Africa, are little-read and hard to find.

If you can believe that this undistinguished and conventionally Left-wing machine politician is a sort of secular saviour, then you can believe anything. He plainly doesn’t believe it himself. His cliche-stuffed, PC clunker of an acceptance speech suffered badly from nerves. It was what you would expect from someone who knew he’d promised too much and that from now on the easy bit was over."

Some posters are right.
'Tis amusing to see some comments here apparently recalling the Clinton era with such fondness...that a 65% approval rating is not such a despicable thing afterall.

Who woulda thunk that from this bunch?

But then again, aren't these the same folks who thought Clinton was the Devil Incarnate?

I suppose their fervent hope now is for Obama to leave office with a G.W. Bush approval rating of 21%.

By God, that will show those folks who voted for Obama a thing or two.

Hope springs eternal, I guess.

Ah...not with these folks, for they hope for failure.

Now what could be more "American" than that?

Cough.

Pistol's 3:10 comments relating to the staggering financial mess Obama will inherit have some merit.

Very silly column!
Sir, Obama has to deal with a huge debt/deficit, a horrendous financial crisis, unsustainable entitlements and two unresolved wars and a nuclear-ambitious Iran that if not handled properly can lead to a foreign policy nightmare, and his repeated promises not to raise taxes on people who make any less than at least 200K! He cannot simply ride the favorable economic and foreign policy tides like Clinton did and claim credit for all its goodies! People expect from Obama to fix all these problems without raising their taxes which is a physical and mathematical impossibility and also his far left supporters who really did everything in their power to make him president will not give up on their payback which by definition will put Obama in an impossible situation! In these hard times he has given so many promises to so many conflicting groups that he is bound to disappoint many! And then at that very moment, Mr. Chapman, sir, you and all the conservative pundits should be alert and on guard to jump on his throat and expose him to for the lying fraud that he is! The only way Obama might pull this presidency off without losing face completely is if the media continue to cover for him and we never must let that happen! He will never leave the office with anything as high as a 65% approval rate! Not if you pundits and the alternative media is doing its job of exposing Obama right!

Were you sleeping when you wrote this?
This is an unusul column for Townhall- took so much room to say absolutely nothing.

Bull Shat
Once there, he found that Americans are a conservative people -- in the sense of wanting to conserve what they have, especially any benefits they get from Washington. Result: The welfare state survived with little change
----------------------------------------------

That is as far as I read because it is absolute bull shat. The welfare State and big government survived Reagan because he had a DEMOCRAP congress who did NOT consist of a lot of DINOs who crossed the aisle on socialism issues.

I swear I think a lot of our so-called conservative pundits have gone off the deep end lately.

Chapman
Your column implies that Obama may leave with a 65 per cent positive rating too, just by being another Slick Willie. Highly unlikely. Clinton inherited a dynamic economy driven by investors eager to exploit the pro-business govt which crushed the Air Traffic controllers strike. The computer revolution increased productivity which enabled business to increase wages. But Reagan failed to deal with the longer term problems of unfunded entitlements like social/security, and the illegal immigrant situation. Bush made these problems worse and added the unresolved Iraq situation. Obama is inheriting an economy which has had the first sniff of the financial impact of running up huge amounts of debt. Moreover, its not the existing debt that is most dangerous, its the future debt that current entitlements make certain. Prosperity depends on investment, which depends on investor confidence. Its not investors who elected Obama. The ocean of debt already in place makes it extremely difficult to buy our way out of this situation when much of the rest of the world is being much more financially responsible. Investment goes where it is safe and best rewarded. Jobs follow investment, as even some fools realize. No doubt this number will rise over the near future.

Isn't this the guy
who was Gung Ho for Obama?

Now he is doing the centrist's mantra with "he won't make any changes that was BS"

could have expected you to tell us to slip into a coma after teh election.

To the other readers...Is this Obama admiration scary or what?
