Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have many differences and something in common: Each governed a liberal place, and each, while in office, often sided with liberals on particular issues. They are both making the presidential campaign more entertaining through strenuous but unconvincing attempts to live down those youthful indiscretions.

Lately they have been arguing over the line-item veto, which lets a president excise individual spending programs without killing an entire bill. Romney faults Giuliani for going to court to challenge the line-item veto enacted under President Clinton, and Giuliani insists he couldn't tolerate this well-meaning law because of his deep respect for the Constitution.

In last week's debate, Romney declared, "The best tool the president has had is a line-item veto. And Mayor Giuliani took the line-item veto that the president had all the way to the Supreme Court and took it away from the president of the United States. I think that was a mistake."

Giuliani said it was not a matter of loving spending cuts less but loving the Constitution more. "The line-item veto was unconstitutional," he replied. "What the heck can you do about that, if you're a strict constructionist?"

Romney has proven time and again that if he has to look ridiculous to become president, he's willing to make the sacrifice. No position he took in the past was so firm or clear that he is not willing to abandon it like a burning car. Abortion, gay rights, immigration, gun control -- you name it, he's argued it either way.

But his latest venture puts him in an even odder position. When the Supreme Court struck down the line-item veto, he insisted, only two people applauded -- Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Giuliani.

Not exactly. Contrary to Romney's recollection, it was not Giuliani who took away the line-item veto but the Supreme Court. Among the justices who voted to strike it down were two justices revered on the right: William Rehnquist and Clarence Thomas. Continued...

Reagan Today Part 2
California in 1967 was liberal by the standard of most of the rest of the country. It is a big state and most of it may have been like Talent Scout described but then words like 'hard working average men and women' descibe much of the people in Mass. By the end of Reagans second term as governor it fully had the reputation whether deserverd or not as being liberal.

In 1983 I was stationed at Ft Ord and even then we called it "land of fruits, nuts and flakes". (no offense, since you are certainly on the “right” ).

Pres Reagan may have wanted to go after illegals with things such as going after the people hiring illegals but he never had huge success enforcing it.

Pres Reagan WAS a great president. However, look at only the surface of his record prior to taking office and you might not have known it. Take a DEEP look at the man and you get a more accurate picture of him and would have seen how he would and did accomplish great things.

I posted those statements because I take umbrage at Mr. Chapman's opening statement "Each governed a liberal place, and each, while in office, often sided with liberals on particular issues. They are both making the presidential campaign more entertaining through strenuous but unconvincing attempts to live down those youthful indiscretions" as being superficial looks at men whose surface (but not Deep down) is similar to Pres Reagans. We should expect more in depth thought then he opened the article with was my point.

Let me educate you

Reagan Today
Reagan was from a liberal state. Can't get much more liberal then Cali (well except for maybe Mass). Reagan was part of one of the most liberal cultures (hollywood). He was divorced and remarried to an actress. Reagan was President of a union (screen actors guild). Reagan was for AMNESTY of illegals.

Having been born and raised in California you are wrong about the State at that time.
It was made up of your basic hard working average men and women.

Mostly conservative, not liberal.(LA and SF are not all of California)
Immigration from all over the world and all other States beginning with the hippys from across the country came flocking and changed it to what it has become today.
And Reagan was against the amnesty but went along after a fight, and with restrictions.

quote:
In exchange for legal status for the group, Reagan insisted that the magnet attracting illegal aliens to the United States be removed by extinguishing any incentive for U.S. employers to hire illegal aliens. In tandem with the amnesty, Reagan campaigned for employer sanctions for hiring illegal aliens, sanctions so stringent that many at the time regarded them as draconian.

Reagan reasoned that if an employer were fined for hiring an illegal alien (as much as $1 million in the worst cases), any payroll savings achieved by the hiring would be wiped out by the fine. In effect, it would be more expensive to hire illegal aliens than to hire Americans or lawful permanent residents. The few illegal aliens who continued to take the gamble and cross the border would be intercepted by a robust and more generously funded Border Patrol.
