Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

When I've been asked whom I thought could be the individual to lead the Republican Party out of the wilderness, my answer has always been Mark Sanford. His vision for his party and his country -- traditional values and limited government -- has always been clear, consistent, and, in my view, correct. And he has always pursued that vision, as a congressman and as a governor, with a boldness and courage rare among politicians.

The Cato Institute publishes a bi-annual report card of the nation's governors, ranking them according to fiscal responsibility. In the most recent report, three governors out of fifty received an "A." Sanford was one of the three.

So, like many others, I watched with disappointment his confession about his clandestine adulterous affair.

Now what?

No surprises that most predict the end of Sanford's political career. And, of course, we've got the usual, and gleeful, accusations of hypocrisy that another conservative Republican has been caught with his pants down.

But if there is a crisis in America today -- and I think there is -- is it that leaders fall short of standards, or is it that our answers to human frailty increasingly tend to deny that any standards exist?

The most strident accusations of hypocrisy come not from those saddened that Sanford fell short of the traditional values to which he subscribes. They're from those who want to de-legitimize and marginalize those traditional values. John F. Kennedy gave a famous speech during his 1960 presidential campaign to address the question of his Catholicism. Rather than argue that Catholic values are consistent with American values, he argued that religion and public policy have nothing to do with each other.

Kennedy turned out to be one of the great sleazes to occupy the White House (not unlike his brother Senator Ted who, in his last hurrah, is now trying to socialize American health care).

During the almost half century since Kennedy gave that speech, the moral, social, and legal fabric of our country has steadily unraveled.

In 1960, around 5 percent of our babies were born to unwed mothers. Today it is 40 percent.

The pillars upon which our free country stands -- sanctity of life, liberty, and property -- have been eroded to the point where they are barely recognizable.

Since the Roe v Wade decision in 1973, 50 million unborn children have been destroyed. The United States now has among the most liberal abortion regimes in the world. In some of our states, a 12-year-old girl can get an abortion without informing her parents, be assisted by her school administrators, and have it paid for with taxpayer funds.

We move step by definitive step to legalizing same sex marriage. By so doing, we will render our most sacred social institution, marriage, meaningless in the official eyes of government and as a nation will formalize the acceptability of behavior our Bible clearly calls sinful and abominable.

We will soon have a generation of Americans the majority of whom will not have grown up in a traditional family.

Government now claims over 40 percent of our national output, leaving Americans with personal control over barely half the product of their own labor.

And politicians, as we have seen over the last year, can at will take over our privately owned companies, dictate how they're run and what executives earn, and commit private taxpayers to trillions in spending and debt.

In a world in which there is sin, in which there is right and wrong, there is also repentance and redemption.

Mark Sanford's world is that world. Let's pray that he can fix what is wrong inside of himself and that maybe we can still have a leader with the courage and vision that America needs.

He should resign and work on family life
My advice for the governor would be to resign and put his wife and family first. `They are a smart couple that don't need the distraction of the office.

Sanford
50% of South Carolinians do not want him to resign.

The overwhelming majority of South Carolinians do not want the Lt. Governor to take his place.

And, the Lt. Governor does not want the top spot under the circumstances ... I heard him say as much.

Finally, let the Democrats cast the first stone because they can explain: President Clinton, Gov. Patterson, Gov. Spitzer, Mark Foley and his Democratic successor, Gov. McGreevey, Governor Edwin W. Edwards, Senator Gary Hart, JFK, Eisenhower, FDR, Governor Huey P. Long, Senator Earl Long, President Cleveland, President Thomas Jefferson ... I could go on, but I care more about fiscal responsibility than marital fidelity.

Pointless
Imagine if Sanford had devoted the same amount of time he spent on his mistress, to his sons instead. If that was the case, he wouldn't have to stand around today & pretend he is a great family man. Politicians & big executives w/ children have so much gall. They force their children to live out fake public lives. They make their kids endure draining political trips and countless public appearances for a Dad they hardly ever see. The kids are held to an impossibly high standard - especially compared to other kids today. Then, one day the bottom drops out and Dad announces that all along he has been a liar and a cheater. Even though now the kids will be subjected to taunts and jeers due to their Dad's cheating, their fake act must be put into hyper mode. Now, they have to pretend to forgive Dad and love him even more. Should we change the expectation level for these high flying men? Maybe, we should be more realistic and see it is okay for politicians to be childless. What is the point of this facade anymore? Perhaps the question should be changed from "Have you cheated on your wife?" to "How many times have you cheated on your wife?"

Living a Perfect Sin Free Life

Only One person in the history of mankind has achieved that.

However, it is possible to live a 'Repentant Life' before God.

God is just and willing to accept repentance and say 'Go and Sin No More'.

This forgiveness by God is for our 'Eternal Life' and unfortunately for us, sometimes does Not affect our Earthly life as much as we would like.

The fact that God is willing to forgive us, does Not give us a license to continue in sin, nor does it necessarily cause those our sins have hurt to grant forgiveness.

God said Not only would He forgive our Sins - He would never remember them against us anymore.

This is a 'Good Deal' and something we humans are incapable of doing, even when the one we have hurt the most is ourselves.

Actually, Jesus commanded us to love our brothers as much as we love ourselves.

If we cannot forgive ourselves, it seems to me that commandment would be impossible.

Many humans have recited or prayed this prayer:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours.
Now and for ever. Amen

Notice that Prayer states, we are asking God to forgive us in the same manner and with the same mercy that we show those who have sinned against us.

That prayer becomes scary and peace giving at the same time.

Even though our God 'forgiven' sins will Not disqualify us from our 'Eternal Life', they may disqualify us from positions in this life e.g husband, friend, employee, politician or any other position of 'Trust'.

Not committing adultery is very simple
How difficult is it to say "this woman is not my wife, I'm not going to touch her?" A man who cannot do that is no better than a dog.

Here's my problem with anyone suggesting, whether it was about JFK, or Bill Clinton, or Governor Sanford, that the private life and the professional/politica life needn't overlap: all three of these men showed that they would allow their personal interests to outweigh the interests of their respective positions. The governor is not more important than the governed, neither the representative more important than the represented.

If I say that it's correct to hold these people to a higher standard, it's because so much more is at stake.

Sorry, I don't want Mark Sanford standing as the last, best hope of the Republican party. I'd prefer someone who can at least uphold something as simple (and yet critically important) as a marriage vow. Why is that too much to ask?

Sanford should stay
Forgiveness and redemption. I do not think he should resign. It is too easy to trash the man and drag this drama out ad nauseam. He has the makings for a strong leader. Let's get beyond all the finger pointing and support this man.

Why was/is it ok for Clinton and other Democrats to do the same and remain in office. It is a double standard.

He done wrong. Let's move on. He should stay.

Who Would Have Thought?
Living in South Carolina and seeing the reaction hereabouts to Sanford's cheating, it is disappointing to see many willing to let him stay as governor. No problem, just separate the job and the life! There is forgiveness in heaven but not on earth when you are a leader like Sanford was supposed to be. At least Republicans in general mostly want Sanford to resign. In the Democrat Party, such performance is considered business as usual. I will be greatly disappointed if he does not resign, that is the proper thing to do. What can he do to repair his treachery to his wife and his sons? He should be ashamed to let his face show in public, such are the lengths to which our society has gone, you can do such a shabby thing and still be allowed to perform the duties of governor.

Ted Kennedy's fingerprints
are ALL over every single socialist issue crammed down our throats since the late 60's. He is a progressive, statist PIG and I can't believe the people of MA are so-oooo stupid they keep sending him back to Washington, again and again and again.

Then there is Dodd and Frank, who almost single handedly destroyed the housing market. And now there is Waxman and Markey - whose goal seems to be the total destruction of the United States of America.

Who are these people who elect dangerous enemies to the country, now including a foreigner, dictating from the White House?

It is US!

I'm no prude, but
the stakes are too high. I don't want a guy who could put us into a nuclear war to have a brain so easily controlled by an appendage below his waist.

morality or stupidity?
Regardless of skill, talent, accomplishment, education or any other factor, if an individual is in the public eye, someone is sure to notice bad behavior. Believing otherwise is stupid.

Sorry, But

Unless you are a resident of South Carolina, it is none, I repeat NONE, of your business.

Do I like what Sanford did? Absolutely NOT, but:

His marriage is between his SPOUSE and his God.

His Governorship is up to South Carolinians.

Enough said.

I will go on record

I will go on record as saying the inability to keep ones vows to their spouse, shows a deficit in Character and Trustworthiness.

If we are to take our Country back from the evil that now controls America - we need men and women with proven character - Sanford has proven otherwise in that regard.

I pray that Sanford will petition God for forgiveness and God will grant that request.

I pray that God restores the marriage, if that is what his wife wants.

I for one do NOT want him in any position of power or authority in this great country - Sanford has proven he is not worthy of such an honor.

Forgiveness from God will be an asset in this life on Earth and future spiritual life NOT on this Earth.

No matter how smart or principled his political views are, Sanford has proven beyond reasonable doubt, he cannot be trusted - future in politics - that ship has already sailed.

Sanford
Why would his career end? all he has to do is cross the isle and declare himself a liberal democrat and it'll be ok.

uwCharlie

Since you live in South Carolina, it is your business, not mine. The same is true about my former, four-term Governor, Edwin W. Edwards (D). He was a serial philanderer. I never voted for him and he is in Club Fed, NOW. I have always DISAPPROVED of him ... "dead girl or live boy" was his reasoning why he would not lose in LA.

The fact remains that I do not have any say in what you do in your State?

Should we have national elections for the Governors? And, the dog catcher?

Where Was The Outrage..

When my former Governor, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, and my Mayor, Ray Nagin, so mismanaged Hurricane Katrina's aftermath? People DIED.

Blanco wisely chose not to seek re-election.

Nagin is still here albeit under Federal investigation.

Who made him the front-runner?
Who exactly made Mark Sanford the frontrunner and standard bearer of the national GOP? Most people before and immediately after the stimulus fight could not have picked Mark Sanford out of a lineup, even if he had a nameplate on! Now that he gets caught with his pants down, suddenly he is the downfall of the GOP and the Party isn't going to be able to field a candidate in 2012 because Mark Sanford is it? C'mon folks, it's not as bad as the media and some conservative pundits are acting like it is!

The bigger problem here is not the adultery, it is the fact that Sanford misled his staff, in turn having them mislead the public, and that he used (apparently) public funds to pay for his Argentine fling. That's the breach of public trust here; everything else is to be woked out with is wife and family in private.

I'm with EDamon50
I was sitting on the fence figuring it was a SC problem until it came out that he used tax-payer dollars to support his habit. In a way, it's still a SC problem, BUT I won't ever vote for him for a national office.

Family values?

>But this is about perception ... don't you think a party that claims the mantle of "family values" should be expected to meet some minimum requirements? Both Ensign and Stanford were being touted as rising stars of the GOP ... if you can't trust them on their family values stand ... then what makes you think their are trust worthy on their fiscal responsibility?<

>And recall neither Govs McGreevey or Spitzer ran as family values candidates but when they were caught ... they both resigned!<

Political Suicide
Period.

St. Denis, you wrote...
"Unless you are a resident of South Carolina, it is none, I repeat NONE, of your business."

I respectfully disagre. When any individual is promoted as one of the front-runners for the POTUS candidacy, He or she is EVERYBODY'S business.

Dont waste support
We cant afford to throw any support to a lame canidate with no chance of becoming president. Mr Sanfford was a good candidate, however, I think most can agree now he has no chance of becoming president. Republicans need a leader right now that will pull more democrat votes than ever before so theres no chance of obama completely destroying our country by getting re-elected. It is time to quit thinking about who you want elected most and think about who actually has a chance of winning.

Heres what I do know.

Mark Sanford never did anything to hurt me or my family.

Ted Kennedy, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi have.

Ricci WINS!!!!

Take that Sotomayor and shove it!

Look, I Do Not Care

About his adultery. His is not the only case of adulterous behavior.

If I lived in SC, I would be calling for his IMPEACHMENT because he used tax dollars and went AWOL.

The adultery is between Sanford, his wife and their God.

michigander
I am a Republican and agree with your assessment of Sanford. Sanford did nothing to discourage the mention of his name as a potential candidate for POTUS in 2012. Further, he became head of the National Republican Governors Association, a move which signaled that he was available for moving up in the Party.

As for the Lt. Governor saying that he was/is not interested in moving into the Governor's slot, that is only politic and discretion. He would look like a power-grabbing nit-wit to push such a thing while Sanford's scandal is unfolding. He has the common sense to sit back and bide his time.

Useful Idiots
There is a basic difference between the politicians you named and Sanford. Those politicans are elected to federal office to represent their districts in their states. You have Representatives and Senators you have elected. Your job, then, is to encourage your Congressmen to vote the way you want in matters that impact you.

Think of Mark Sanford more like John Edwards. He is a man who might have become the GOP nominee. Fortunately, the skeletons in his closet became known before he ascended into higher office. Does his behavior hurt the GOP? That is debateable. However, had he been the POTUS nominee for the GOP and this scandal came to light, it would certainly hurt the GOP.

Sanford Needs to Retire
He placed his own libido over his responsibility not just to his wife and family, but to We, the People. The People of South Carolina, and the People of the United States who thought he might be a Presidential candidate worth voting for.

Thank goodness this happened BEFORE the primaries.

Governor Sanford is a disgrace to his office, and needs to go, willingly or be voted out.

Barney Frank
It is amazing that USA would allow such an unbalanced , known homosexual(which is synonimous with mentally ill) person to have so much power. We asked for the problems we now have by affording mental cases to make policy that we have to follow under threat of deadly force by the government that rules us no longer by the people for the people. Nancy pelosi is an obvious neurotic as can be easily seen in any picture of her that I have ever seen. She always has the whites of her eyes showing a clear and documented sign of craziness. I cant even make my eyes open as wide as hers are normaly with all the white showing. It is time to laugh these morons out of Washington.

SC Governor
http://eye-rate.blogspot.com/

He has got to go but the decision lies in the folks of SC who can demand an impeachment because he will not step down.
Amazing how the conservative republican mind can challenge half the country with being immoral, unpatriotic, unethical, and unintelligent if they have a bent toward moderation in government. This man is a phony, pretending to be conservative while wasting tax payer dollars, by insisting only republicans have family values, and by pretending to live by the Bible which he quotes but does not heed, and should step down to promote efficient government in South Carolina

Mark Sanford Saga
I totally agree with Star Parker on this issue. Instead of asking Republicans to step down when they sin (due to the party's standards), how about trying to restore them? Didn't Jesus tell us to forgive so God may forgive our sins? If not, then our enemies will have the last word and will define us. Sen. Larry Craig didn't have to resign. He had a good track record and his only infraction was that incident at the airport.

I voted for him
And I don't have a problem with him finishing his term. I do have a problem with him resigning and unleashing Bauer upon us. I disapprove of his adultery, but I voted for him to keep our budget under control and that he has done as well as anyone could have.

don't miss the point...
As a former SC resident, I've been admiring Mark Sanford's stance during the economic crisis and felt he had clear potential in the national arena. News of the affair is gut-wrenching, but is not the primary issue, which is his failure to transfer power while out of the country. As a responsible leader, he should have taken that step, and since he was already separated from his wife, it's hard to understand why this wasn't done. As contrite as he appeared in the news conference last week, I'd be inclined to forgive the infidelity and pray his wife and family can do the same. But isn't abandoning his state a dereliction of duty?

Star. Dear.
Mr. Sanford is toast. Not just for his affair (which only democrats can survive), but for making an utter ridiculous fool of himself in the way he's handled it.

Maybe he'll suvive locally in SC, but don't be looking to him for any sort of conservative leadership.
Toast.

Juan
"Didn't Jesus tell us to forgive so God may forgive our sins?"

Have you forgiven Bubba Clinton for his indiscretion yet?

"Sen. Larry Craig didn't have to resign. He had a good track record and his only infraction was that incident at the airport."

Yeah, he was only caught one time. You can take it to the bank that he's a serial bathroom stalker.

I'm sorry or I apologize
On a state level I have no opinion.

On a federal electoral level. He would not get my vote.
It has nothing to do with his obvious fiscally conservative values, which I admire.

The mans personality set off alarms while watching his press conference. About traits that I may never have seen if it werent for these circumstances.
I watched it several times to try and understand what my gut was telling me.
And it boils down simply to this.

He repeatedly apologized to his mistress and the people of South Carolina first.
His wife and children last.
If he would have done that a single time ? I might have written it off to the stress of the moment.
That spoke volumes to me about his priorities.

If I were a friend of his. I would strongly suggest he take care of whats really important here first. His family.

If he can govern AND get his priorities in order thats a personel decision only he can make.

When voting for candidates I dont simply vote issues. I also take into account the person.

I was taught when wrong, to apologize is not simply saying I'm sorry. It is extremely important when making amends I do no more harm.
To apologize for my own redemtion at the expence of others is not just.

I sincerely hope he gets his priorities straight for his own sake AND his families.
South Carolina will get over this. His family will carry the scars.

Bill, CA

You are correct. His press conference was quite reminiscent of Senator Thomas Eagleton, but I still contend that it is up to the people of South Carolina whether he remains Governor or not.

bad comparisons
Any comparison between Sanford and the others (Clinton, Edwards, Craig, Vitter, etc.) is apples and oranges. Parker wants to write about the man and sins and redemption and completely fails to address the legal obligations that he abandoned. The governor went missing and told no one where he was, leaving the state without a governor. He used government funds to do it. He didn't just put his libido before his family. He put his selfish needs before the state. Imagine if you simply did not show up to work for 4 days. Would you still have a job to come back to? Of course not. From what I can tell those other egomaniacs who have cheated didn't completely abandon their post to have their affairs. Forgive the man for his sins if you like but dont forget his dereliction fo duty.

Mark Sanford join the sleaze crowd
I expect myself to be above the Kennedy's in morals.
I expect Conservatives for whom I vote to be above the Barney Frank's, the Chris Dodds, the Joe Biden's, the Obama's, the Charles Schumer's, the Charley Rangel's and the myriad of misfits both left and right who have so poorly represented us.
That does not mean I will lower my standards in voting to have my votes go to the misfits, of which Mark Sanford now joins. Behave yourselves!

To Those who say it is not our business

I agree that it is up to the people of South Carolina to decide whether Sanford remains Governor or not.

I strongly disagree, that it is no ones business about speaking out except for the Citizens of South Carolina.

Anyone who cannot keep their oath to their spouse is more likely to NOT keep their oath to whomever they represent.

Recidivism can only happen to those who have not kept the law or their oaths.

Barney Franks is a prime example of a man who has caused untold damage to this country.

Yes he was and is elected by the citizens of Massachusetts and that is their prerogative not mine.

How can any critical thinker believe Barney Franks is capable over oversight, when he didn't even know prostitution was going on in his own home?

There are narcissists on OUR side, too
In addition to cheating on his wife and leaving the helm of his state without notifying anyone, I would offer the following . . .

Multiple choice:

News reports have said that ever since the governor's cheating was discovered by his wife some five months ago (after which she told him she was willing to forgive him), he has been:

a) Thanking her for the bottom of his heart and promising to never do it again.

b) Repeatedly asking for her permission to go to be with his mistress.

The correct answer is ... B! (Good job, governor!)

When given a public opportunity to redeem himself he:

a) Demonstrated shame and embarrassment - and promised to never do it again.

b) Likened himself to the man who is considered to be the greatest king in Israel's history.

Again, the correct answer is ... B!

To offer that as your response when your immoral behavior is found out defies reason, and suggests that this is a person who has lost touch with reality.

Helpful hint: If you're REALLY ‘like King David’ (a man God said was "A man after His own heart"), I would suggest that you let OTHER people say that - not YOU! How full of yourself! Who would DO that?! And, BTW, I wouldn't take it very seriously unless they were saying it WAY after the fact - after someone’s fully demonstrated that they’ve turned their life back around.

The gun’s still smoking on this one - at this point, I don't think there’s any indication that repentance and redemption are even on a this man’s radar. Given that he has been whimperingly asking his wife for months for permission to go visit his mistress, I don’t even know why we should believe he doesn’t intend to ‘reconvene’ with his ‘girlfriend.’

I wish everyone in this situation well, but believe the governor to be a thoroughgoing narcissist – and I don’t dislike (and mistrust) narcissism only when it’s manifested in the behavior and attitudes of those on the other end of the political spectrum.

Greg
"According to the Gospel of Luke, "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

We HAVE the leader, and it's not Sanford
The party HAD and still HAS a leader to lead us out of the wilderness, but the ridiculous primary election schedule allowed New York and a couple of other states to pick McCain by Feb. 5. By the time we in Ohio got to vote, there was no chance of having a say in it.

The man to lead the party out is ROMNEY, because he LIVES the meaning of the word "FIDELITY". If a person is not faithful to his spouse and children, then he cannot be trusted to be faithful to unknown masses of constituents.

Meet Lynn Rosenthal

Obama's newest Tsar. She will advise Obama on violence against women.

Why does he need an advisor on violence against women? Is some violence acceptable? What would she advise on Sharia law?

Just the latest example of an Executive Branch's power grab.

Messanger and Messages
The message is no less valuable because the messanger doesn't follow its teaching. The message needs to be divorced from the messanger.

If the message is good and works, it doesn't matter who says it. On the flip side, a good person can just as easily have a bad message.

The person is irrelevant when evaluating what is said, messages must always be taken on their own merits.

Summers

I agree with the big picture you portray.

I don't agree the people of Mass. elected Ted Kennedy or Barney Frank to hurt my family.

I don't agree the people of California elected Nancy Pelosi to hurt my Family.

They elected them to represent their district.

If representing their district is results in hurting people in other states, they they should not vote for Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama.

A big problem we have in this country is ignorant Liberals who don't understand that when John Murtha gets millions of Federal Tax dollars for an airport that only serves 14 people a day in his district, that that hurts the single mom in Kentucky who is driving 25 miles a day to some job making $18,000 a year trying to feed and house her family.

Useful Idiot
"A big problem we have in this country is ignorant Liberals who don't understand that when John Murtha gets millions of Federal Tax dollars for an airport that only serves 14 people a day in his district... "

Actually, they serve over 20 people per flight per day. Six flights per day, seven days a week. I have no idea how many military flights there are per day, but I'm sure you are OK with any amount for that portion... as long as it doesn't serve the public in any direct way.

Are you prepared to make up the military numbers as well? Do they spend millions to fly one admiral to DC every day? One monkey in a space suit? Who knows, but I'm sure you have all the answers.

A big problem we have in this country is when ignorant Conservatives make up numbers. What the ignorant Con will also ignore is that the airport serves a local military installation as well. I guess it would be OK with a Con if the military took over the airport, in which case the military would have to pay for it -- i.e., nothing changes. We both get socked for the bill, but there is absolutely no oversight for the military.

Chill Bump
This revelation about Gov. Sanford is another chill bump on the hide of an elephant.

It is obvious that American society is so far from simply obeying the Ten Commandments that unless God Almighty intervenes the downward spiral will continue.

There is no way the love of sin in American citizens will be rejected any other way.

Without the fear and help of Almighty God through Jesus Christ to change the hearts of men there is no hope. Garantizado!

inthemajority

Actually I used the same number John Murtha admitted to when questioned.

I also see you didn't grasp the bigger concept here.

You see, John Murtha's airport, paid by the good lady in Kentucky, serves just John Murtha, a few of his staff, and not many in the public.

The Military aircraft you object too, serves all the people in the United States.

So thank you for objecting to spending money that benefits everyone and supporting spending money that only benefits the few.

Its what Liberals do best.

re: The Ruse!!!!
Who Cares!!!! Look, why don't we focus on this crap that these clowns are voting on that is not even in print!!! Or, how about a focus on the way ClownBama is doing with this out right lying to people and telling them he will not raise taxes on the middle class when in fact this CAp&Crap bill is a handed down tax from buisnesses, and watch us import more oil from overseas because the local drillers with be forced out of business!! How about this hugh, there is alot more crap from these clowns in congress to deal with than some ruddypoop governor who just has crappy morals, and besides no one really roster Teddy for his bruehaha thing at Chappaquitic(Sp), that was murder and you know it!!!!

davpatt3
You are right - you've state THE BOTTOM LINE altogether.

CORRECTION
The last paragraph to Parker's column should read:
"Mark Sanford's world is that world. Let's pray that he can invent a time machine so he can go back and have himself fixed (castrated) before he began the affair and committed the most uncourageous and unleader like act of abandoning his marriage, his kids, and his state."

Judge Yourself, First!
Adultery has been going on since time began and adulterous men were kings, emperors, sheiks, Presidents, and so forth.....Adultery is a sin, but it exists and always has existed and even women are engaging in adultery more than in the past because everything is about ME! Didn't we tell society that if it feels good - do it! Aren't we trying to push sexual preference and orientations into pre-schools and up - Aren't the movies, video games, TV, internet filled with soft and hard porn? Aren't many of the radio stations filled with bad language and sexual inuendos that even cross over? Aren't the magazines filled with nude people wearing a pair of shoes and you're suppose to guess what' they're selling? Aren't schools trying to push for little minor kids to march in gay pride parades where adults are almost nude; expressing sexual gyrations; using inappropriate language for day time TV and kids? So, if you don't like this message then too bad - do something about it and stand up and fight back for decency in the media, schools, government, and fashion - little girls look like they're 25 - walking around in high heel shoes at five and wearing lipstick - what do you expect?

Great Stone Throwers!
I am really, really impressed by the verbal volleys presented on this site. UHH!! I am not referring to the libs and dems; they are who they are. Their plumbline moves and curves to embrace each new politician they esteem. In New Testament there was a name for such prolific stone throwers...pharisees; those white-washed on the outside and corrupt on the inside. They were proud stone throwers because they were blind to their own faults. How blind to your own need for grace are you? From what I know of Sanford, I am inclined to discard hope for his political career on the dung heap of time...BUT I know a very big GOD, who loves to forgive. Lets give the guy some time and space and even maybe a few words to God on his behalf. We might come out with a humble leader who has made the choice to acknowledge a healer stronger and wiser than himself.
Stop stoning, start praying.

Florida Jim -- why would you expect conservatives to be "above the sleaze"? All evidence points to the conservatives as being just as sleazy if not worse then the liberals. Most conservatives take the sanctimonious stand of how perfect & rightous they are, but they can't keep their pants zipped either.

And to Juan -- "...due to the party's standards?" Since when do the Repubs/Conservatives claim to have superior standards to the liberals? They're just as slimy if not more.

George: "...homosexuality is synonymous with mentally ill" According to who? Just because you're afraid of homosexuals doesn't mean they're mentally ill.

And to Denis: It was Bush the imbecile and "heckuva job Brownie" (Republicans) who mismanaged the assistance for hurricane Katrina. Bush should have been impeached for that and for his "compassion" as he told of his angst about his friend Trent Lott's million dollar plus home being destroyed without even pretending he gave a crap about anyone else (particularly if they were poor)

It is my opinion that if you called for President Clinton's resignation due to his lying to a grand jury about his infidelity, then you have the right to call for Governor Sanford's resignation as well.

However, if, like most democrats, you that the Clinton affair was much ado about nothing, then you don't have the credibility to make this request.

Where do you stand on this issue?

Regards

Sorry to all about last incomplete post
2nd & 3rd paragraphs should have read:

However, if like most democrats, you think that the Clinton affair was much ado about nothing, and you didn't call for his resignation, then you don't have the credibility to make this request.

I don't see what your position is Jerry.

Not stone throwing...
I hope the governor wins back his family, and wish him and them all the best.

But when his wife forgave him, for the next 5 months he kept begging her to let him go visit his mistress. Not surprisingly, his wife said no - but he went anyway. That's not a stone - that's what he did in the face of the forgiveness (unmerited favor) that his wife extended to him.

And when he publicly addressed the issue of what he'd done, he didn't talk a good deal about how sorry he was for what he'd done to his wife and children - instead, he said he was like King David. As I said before, let someone ELSE talk about how much you remind them of King David - I see here delusions of grandeur in a situation where embarrassment and regret would have been more appropriate.

I want the governor to express sincere regret (not maudlin theatrics), to honestly accept responsibility for what he's done, and to get things back on track in his relationship with his family and with God.

I simply pointed out two things that make it easy to wonder whether he's done either of those things.

I don't want him to be stoned, I don't want him to not be forgiven, and I don't want the rest of his life to be miserable and unhappy.

It is difficult, however, to envision how someone who has demonstrated such irresponsibility and betrayal to be a good candidate for the presidency anytime in the near future.

This
I did not think that President Clinton's behavior warranted an impeachment hearing, and likewise, I don't think Governor Sanford's conduct warrants his resignation either, at least in a legal sense. If he wants to stay on, and his state does to, then that's what he should do. If the overall opinion of his constituents is that he needs to resign, than that is what he should do. However, what could make this a legal matter is his trip to South America and how that affected his role as Governor. I'm not a lawyer so I'm not sure if he violated any laws there.

This is not something to celebrate. Infidelity is all too common nowadays and it hurts not just the people directly involved, but their families and friends as well. I am not happy that Mr. Sanford has done this, but, I am happy that a potential conservative candidate for Presdient with name recognition is now most certainly not that a potential candidate any longer. I would have been equally as happy if Mr. Sanford came out and said he was retiring from politics to stay home and whittle wood. I do not rejoice in his troubled marriage, just that he will not have a chance at being my President.

Star I See
What you are saying! But I see Gov. Sanford the same way I see the 8 Liberal Republicans who supported this Cap & Trade Bill, or the 3 Liberal Republican Senators who sold out to the Democrats and supported the Stimulus Bill, or the 70 Liberal Republicans who voted for HR 1256 to punish a segment of our population for their life style choices. Gov. Sanford issues confirm for me that the people we have representing us in Congress at the Federal and State levels are all the same. The majority of Politicians have no principles, have no values, and could care less about what the American People think. That's why they can pass laws like these or commit other so-called sins. Gov. Sanford is just a symptom. An irrelavant one if you would ask me.

Greg @ 2:57 re: Sanford
Doesn't it make sense that if the person supposedly closest to him, his wife, can't trust him, why should the voters of his state trust him?

I did not hear his mea culpa, but generally they are more sorry for being caught, then for actually doing something that is wrong.

Regards

MNDuck...
I agree with you ...

I hope he gets his life back together, but that doesn't mean I think he is a suitable candidate for political office.

As far as whether he ought to resign, I will leave that to be worked out between him and the people of South Carolina - though (from where I sit) I doubt whether he can govern effectively.

No sympathy
Sorry, i have no sympathy for this man who went to another continent to hook up with his mistress. Such a public disgrace! During a trial separation from his wipe in order to remedy the marital issues, he took that opportunity to cheat once again. Scum, scum, scum! He basically threw away his marriage and his children.
For him to compare himself with David is laughable. Yes, David was both a very great and very flawed man. It should be noted that David had the most messed up family situation ever. He had one son who mutinied (Absolem), there was incest (rape) by another brother against a half sister and there were many other issues as bad. But David was also a very REPENTENT man. The Psalms are his personal diary.
For me, Mark Sanford doesn't hold a candle and needs to go. What a scum - I did not hear any true repentence.

MN
I don't know that "where I stand on Clinton's impeachment" has any bearing on this. First of all, it was 10 years ago. Second, these "if-then" arguments don't mean anything. That's a tool that conservatives use as a litmus test and I won't buy it. Each case is different, and by the way who (besides you) decided what the credibility test was? I don't know if Sanford should be impeached -- I don't think all the facts are in yet. As for Clinton, since you want to know, he was a sleazebag personally, but I really resent the sanctimonious, high-moral tone that the Repubs tried to take. Fortunately, it backfired big-time on them and they were soon shown up for who they truly are but "let he who is without sin..." So, hope that helps

Heres what we do know.

With all the corruption, dis-honesty, lack of morals, lack of respect for the voters, we still see Liberals wanting to give more and more power over our lives to Elected Officials.

This is not rational. Liberals are not rational people.

To Star:
I pray that Sanford's public humiliation will be the catalyst for his inner transformation.
Humility often comes at a high cost. Many never recover. It appears that most of the essential components for personal recovery are in his petri dish. Time is also essential.
I agree with your readers that he should consider himself disqualified for the 2012 national election, but do not believe him to be disqualified forever.
Thanks for reminding people of their opportunity to consider and employ the tack of forgiveness.

Jerry - Thanks for the response
I think we all, as citizens get to set the credibility test as we see fit. Also, hypocrisy is hypocrisy. I thought Clinton should have resigned because he couldn't be trusted. I think Sanford should resign for the same reason.

I would only disagree in a small way with the impeachment backfiring on the republicans - the election of GWB. Al Gore should have won that election going away ala GHWB.

As far as the litmus test for a politician, both sides have them, and you know it. The "if-then" argument holds water because the issue is the same - trust in the leader. Or should I say, the loss of trust.

Anyway, I do appreciate the civil and thoughtful reply.

Just between us...
This is absolutely not directed at any individual in this string, but I think we would all be well advised to go back and read what we've written before we post it.

If it sounds angry, petty, or hateful, it needs more revision.

If it sounds sanctimonious or self-righteous, it needs more revision.

If it involves calling people names (especially misspelled names), it needs more revision.

If these forums are ever going to change anyone's minds (on the 'other side') or educate anyone (on either side) – we need to be presenting coherent, logical thoughts in a civil way. And I don't think that the fact that ‘many on the other side are no better’ is a good response. If there was a stark difference between the postings from the two camps, that might actually be persuasive in and of itself.

The tone and quality of our culture in general and our political discourse in particular needs to be elevated ... and where better to begin than townhall.com?

Jerry from NJ question for you?

The alimentary canal was designed with two orifices beginning with the mouth, a tubular passage ending with the Anus.

The natural purpose of the Alimentary Canal, was for the entry of food and its digestion and absorption and then the elimination of residual waste.

There are obviously other uses for the two orifices, one end can expel words and the other can expel flatulence - it is sometimes very difficult to differntiate the two when dealing with a Liberal, but I digress.

Sexual organs (genitalia) were designed for the reproductive system (procreation) and a means of pleasure, gratification and reward for the male and female.

Homosexuals have made a willful choice, to make the alimentary canal their means of pleasure, gratification and reward.

Jerry do you call call this 'Normal Behavior'?

It's their business--
I believe that like several others on this thread that whether or not Sanford stays in office as guv. is the business of the residents of SC, but if he decides to run at some time, for a national office, then it is all of our business.
As for the total flakes we have in DC now, we all know that bad times ahead are not that far off. The storm is rising.

As a liberal...
...I agree with a column Alec Baldwin wrote on huffingtonpost about this whole scandal: there isn't one.

Adultery and divorce are a big bummer, but ultimately it's a personal family matter and not imho terribly relevant to public office.

Neither Sanford nor anyone else should lose their jobs over matters of the heart. It's just not our business. What are we, puritans? Or libertarians? I'm not interested in a moral police, and I don't think the fact that Sanford fell for someone other than his wife should be the end of his, or anyone's, career.

I love conspiracy theories. One of my faves is that J. Edgar Hoover used evidence of Kennedy's affairs to blackmail him into taking Johnson as his VP. Boy, I can daydream all day about what a wonderful world it would be if Johnson hadn't been tempted to assassinate JFK. Vietnam would have gone down much differently, I'm sure. And also LBJ wouldn't have been emboldened to take down RFK and MLK. :)

And Retired Geek I am eagerly awaiting your dissertation on the evils of kissing for its misuse of the alimentary canal, just as you have so willfully plugged my eye-hole with your vile hatred.

Jerry, I LIVE in New Orleans. I suggest tha you review the Posse Comitatus Act and ask yourself why my former Governor waited so long to allow in the Federal Govt. And, you might want to take a look at the investigations, the prosecutions and the convictions associated with Katrina corruption. Finally, you might want to demand to know where ~30% (according to reports) of the money went. POOF! It was GONE and went right into people's pockets.

Do me a favor. Next time, tell the Feds to stay out and keep the money.

The real hypocrites…

‘The most strident accusations of hypocrisy come not from those saddened that Sanford fell short of the traditional values to which he subscribes. They're from those who want to de-legitimize and marginalize those traditional values.’ –Star Parker

Who are the biggest hypocrites and the most self-righteous: those who deny sin and man’s accountability before the Law of God or those who believe in the Law as the standard of righteousness and yet transgress the Law?

The lost man doesn’t know that he is lost; he is completely blinded by his sin, thinking he is free while a slave to unrighteousness. He does what is right in his own eyes, judging others by his own standard of judgment; he is righteous in his own eyes.

But he does not understand that in his condemnation of another man’s transgression he has agreed that the Law is good. He condemns himself as a law breaker and is without excuse. Since sin is of the heart, how shall any escape its condemnation? How can a man change his heart?

The Christian does not claim sinlessness because he knows his own heart. He has a renewed heart, but it is not without sin. There is a struggle now against sin, where before he was a willing captive to its power. He knows that all his righteousness is as filthy rags and claims no righteousness of his own, except that imputed to him through faith in Christ.

We see again the deceitfulness of sin in the believer and in those who accuse him. All men know that God exists by the living things He has made and through the world He has made to sustain their life. The biggest hypocrites are the ones who suppress this knowledge and deny that they will give account to God for their own sin.

How about a FedBulb? To me, it seems as though the Feds want to control all, even the uncontrollable ... like cow farts. Why only cows? What about dogs?

When the Fed. government has a least $50tn to $100tn in unfunded mandates and the government keeps spending, borrowing, printing, and taxing, REAL economic collapse is on the horizon.

Consider what I learned today from my personal banker: It is the opinion of his employer, a large bank in the South, that the Federal Reserve has artifically kept interest rates 9% less than they should be.

The Federal Govt. has more important matters to worry about than lightbulbs and cow farts. The question is: Will they?

Gov.Mark Sanford....For Now,At Least.
When compared to many Democrats who have sinned and lived to tell about it,and are still in office,Gov.Sanford stands tall.

This is the first time I have ever heard a discouraging word about him,his life ,his family and his work for SC.

Having said that,it is my belief that he can never earn the trust of his fellow South Carolinians again. He may be able to finish his term, but it won't be easy.

Yes this is the end of Mark Sanford
He is just another in a long line of "Hypo-Christians" who got busted. The only thing that is is truly sorry for is that he got caught. Becasue if he was a "True Christian" he would not have done what he did. And don't feed me any of the baloney about temptation. I for one am tired of another false, half-hearted apology from another politican. And for those of you here are going to talk about Democrats doing it, yes they do too. Personally I don't care which side of the isle you are from. If it was a Democrat that did it, you people would be jumping all over it. The man cheated on his wife, used tax payer money (more or less) to take the trips, lied to his staff and family about where he was. Yes, I think that adds up to the end of his political career and his marriage. What I also find to be hypocritical of people is once again, that this was the same man who was calling for Clinton to step down for his past indescrition, but yet turns around and does the exact same thing! What did he not think that he would get caught in the act? And yet if it was a Democrat and they apologized, you folks would not buy it. But yet, since it is one of the folks on your side, you all eat it up like there is no tomorrow. Now that is very hypocritical. All politicans are liars and yet, all of you (to the left and right) believe the garbage that flows out of their mouths...Have a nice day....

If what greg/Kansas says is true
Throw the bum out!
Forgive him? That is up to his family!
This guy asked his wife to see his mistress?
Are we totally bankrupt here on Townhall?
Morally bankrupt?! I think he is sick!"Oh honey
can I have a little more sex south of the border
just for a little spice? When I get worn out I
will come back to see my son(s) and you" The guy is a jerk! I prefer a guy/gal who is more trustworthy and a good administrater(sp)!!
Like Gen."S" of the DESERT STORM said about
Clinton "he's not just some joe schmoe he is Prez.of the U.S. HE SHOULD SET AN EXAMPLE for us and our children!Same for GOV.,Sen.,etc.

OK but where's Obama's birth certificate
Well, here we are AGAIN discussing usurper Obama, as if he were a REAL PRESIDENT, when in fact he doesn’t even meet the basic ELIGIBILITY requirements to BE president (not born on American soil). It’s not a small matter of him not providing a real US birth certificate when asked by the American people, it’s that HE DOESN’T HAVE ONE TO BEGiN WITH because he was BORN IN KENYA.

Which by the way, makes every bill Obama signs and every THING he DOES acting as president, iLLEGAL. And pretty much means if we let this go on we are breaking the law right along with him. CONSTITUTIONAL CRISES!

Come join me and help put up another billboard around the USA:
“WHERE’S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?”

Mrs Sanford is the power behind Mark
Other sites describe her as a self-made women with a lot of ability and character. I think Mark is not the man we want as a candidate.

Sanford is Toast
This is very unfortunate, Gov. Sanford had everything going for him and then he does this!!

That said, I do not believe that he has the proverbial snowball's chance in H**l of playing on the team at the national level. Our marvelous, unimpeachable, totally fair and evenhanded MSM would see to it.

What they did and continue to do to Sarah Palin should give anyone pause regarding Sanford's political future.

Something "snapped" in the Governor. I think after the "slap down" regarding the "stimulus" money and a look around at the devastation propagated by the BHO administration in only 5 months he "blew".

I, for one, can hardly blame him.

PC is Thought Control

God knows the heart
Mark Sanford is probably a good man and a strong one too. But he is no King David.

And he does not love this woman he had the affair with. Lust has no power over love.Love would not jeopardize friendship...not for sex.Not according to I Corinthians 13.

And his children and this other woman will now examine their "faith".

"Father in Heaven...I pray right now...first and foremost...please do not bring this back upon Mark's family. Do not allow anyone within that families circle to lose his/her soul to an eternity of Hell because of this transgression. Turn it back upon Satan! Use it to strengthen his family and help heal our nation. In Jesus name, Amen"

MSM Decides? First McCain, Now Sanford?
Certainly, the State Media (MSM) is having a field day over Sanford. They are trying to get the Right to "eat their own" in the same way they lowered the competition by giving us McCain.

I think that Sanford should have made it public that he and his wife were separated and proceeded accordingly. He did not. However, his actions are not illegal or unacceptable in normal business. As an example, Clinton would have been fired in any typical business for exploiting employees for sex, no matter his marital status.

I would like this event to be an issue for Sanford's party to determine, but my guess is that the State Media will use this as a method to eliminate competition. Too bad.

Is he really even sorry?
I can't find any forgiveness for yet another self-indulgent, egotistical lecher who wants to have his cake and eat it too. In a world where we are all sinners, I think there needs to be a little more emphasis on private, as well as public, penitence. I guess I don't see where he has any reason to regret this, except that he's been exposed.

while no one is perfect, this guy turned into an adulterous scumbag. kinda like clinton, teddy, twosome newsome, and the rest of the elected officials.

Sanford is a heartless, quisling, adulterer.

He has nothing to offer the GOP--certainly not in the next ten years.

The GOP has its visionary, its leader who draws in the independents, its leader who draws college students and the young: Ron Paul.

But the GOP and Townhall won't follow their leader. Instead, some rationalize about a PIG.
