Republicans need shareholder revolt

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The first Gallup poll out on President-elect Barack Obama's stimulus plan shows a divided country, with Republicans in a distinct minority and in opposition.

Democrats support the $750-billion plan (67 percent to 19 percent) as do Independents (54 percent to 37 percent). But Republicans stand in opposition (56 percent to 34 percent).

But taking a look at Republican Party reality inside the Washington beltway, we see a rudderless ship, out of touch with the grass roots of its own party.

Our Republican president -- yes, he is still president -- has taken himself out of the discussion. And on Capitol Hill, the Republican leadership appears quite comfortable with the initiative in principle, expressing reservations only in regard to its form and content.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called it an "obvious need" but expressed concern about the massive spending proposal translating into "long-term systematic changes ..." House Republican leader John Boehner appealed to the importance of finding "the right balance."

Pretty tepid stuff, given the severity of the times and the underlying ideological implications of where Obama and his Democratic cohorts in Congress plan to take us.

Where is the Republican leader who is going to challenge the basic premise upon which our president-elect is rationalizing this massive new government intrusion into our economy and our lives?

Mr. Obama said it quite clearly. "...at this particular moment only government can provide the short-term boost necessary to lift us from a recession this deep and severe. Only government can break the cycle that is crippling our economy..."

The fact that there does not appear to be a single Republican leader who is capable or ready to challenge the assertion that "only government" can put our sputtering economy back on track shows we need a rebirth of the Republican Party. And that this rebirth must come from the grass roots.

Those 56 percent of Republicans that said "no" in this latest Gallup poll are looking for a leader. And that leader certainly does not seem to be in Washington.

The Wall Street Journal tallies up that when all is said and done, with the latest round of bailouts and the spending that Obama is putting on the table, the federal government will be sucking out 28 cents of every dollar produced in the American economy. The word "unprecedented" should be on our minds here.

Since World War II, the federal government take has averaged about 20 cents on the dollar. Now, take the 28 cents and add in state and local government spending and we arrive at about 40 cents of every dollar we produce that will be going to government.

Is this really the formula for restoring American greatness and prosperity?

Despite Senator McConnell's stated reservations about this spending tsunami becoming "systematic" and Obama himself saying "I'm not out to increase the size of government long-term," it's impossible to take these disclaimers seriously.

History shows that every expansion of government stays permanent.

Until now, the greatest expansion was under Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal that our president-elect seems to be taking as his model. At the beginning of the 1930s total government take was about 12 cents from every dollar. By the beginning of the 1940s it more than doubled to 25 cents of every dollar.

As Harvard Economist Greg Mankiw points out, the massive expansion of government during those years was supposedly to deal with temporary problems -- the depression and then the onset of World War II.

But there was never a subsequent cut back. The expansion just continued to where we are today.

As the political class in Washington transforms our once great, prosperous, and free country into a lumbering socialist mediocrity, a voice of dissent is needed.

In this sense, I like what Ken Blackwell is proposing in his run for RNC Chairman. Blackwell is calling for a "shareholder revolt" within the Republican Party and to move power, money, and influence to State organizations.

We do need a shareholder revolt in the Republican Party followed by one in the country as a whole.

Why do you think that only Republicans need
shareholder revolt?

I think a bailout was an absolutely necessary
evil, but the way Bush and gang handed out
money with virtually no oversight or
requirements, or punishments is outrageous
beyond belief.

A Revolution is Needed!
I'm with Star! I think it is outrageous to think that only government can (or will) solve our economic issues. We will have an expanded government that will never shrink back to even its current size. I believe in Capitalism and its ability to solve problems when creative minds are put to work to solve problems...for the people and by the people...not government! I is hard for me to believe we as a people have not marched on the halls of the Capitol!

Reminder from 1787..enuf said:
God forbid we should ever be twenty years without a rebellion. the people cannot be all and always well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of facts they misconceive, If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is a lethargy, The forerunner of death to the public's liberty...
And what country can preserve it's liberties if it's rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? ...
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It's natures manure..."

While you are kneeling at Gore's altar, maybe you can ask him why the Global Warming is causing the North to see record snowfalls.

As for Afghanistan, it WAS a 9/11 gut reaction to turn the country into a Sea of Afghanistan. Although, the Taliban was running the country, giving aid and comfort to AQ, and slaughtering thousands in soccer stadiums. Not to mention sequesting women in their homes in burqas, and killing little girls that dared to get an education.

How will you feel when BHO orders you to fly your phantom jet to build the nation of Afghanistan?

Of course, the psych ward will have to give you a leave on your treatment of BDS.

Waterboard a liberal (Robert)

Who is John Galt
Liberals constantly scream for Separation of church and state (often missing the proper application of its meaning). I would LOVE to hear how thier logic for this separation doesn't also apply to the necessity for a separation of enterprise and state. At least private enterprise, when owned by the private sector, does not also control the military. Who is John Galt?

Had you wished more 'intellectual challenge' you would have started off establishing some personal credibility. Your history of exploits and employment were, for a while, slightly amusing just as a poorly written novel can be amusing. The dichotomy in your arguments was another indicator that you were not to be taken seriously. The last sign, which is ongoing, is that you fail and/or refuse to leave the forum even after being banned.

For many of us, who have been here for a long period of time, you are nothing more than a Scroll Troll. While I don't normally engage you, I do so now to drop a hint to newer, serious posters that they need to ignore you and scroll past your inane comments.

Wake Up American
How disappointing that the majority of our elected officials are so eager to throw our hard earned money away. Everyone of every party should stand up and say "that is enough". You were elected, but you have not listened to us for years - what's new? If we want to get back our country, we have to stop spending our money, get out of debt and elect "leaders" with a backbone to do what is best for our country. The revolt is already in the works - hundreds of thousands (and growing) are already fed up with the wimps in Washington. In the word of Thomas Jefferson:
The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world. Thomas Jefferson

Rowly, I Never Said "Priceless"
That was the word of call-a-drunk. I SAID "beautiful" given it is a word we used in a sarcastic manner. Also, the word "beautiful" came up regarding my choice to have a root canal rather than watch O's Cor.

Root canals aren't beautiful and O's Cor. is not priceless. But, I chose the lesser of the two evils. :)

Don't Tread on Me (re #25) & History
The best post in this very long thread.

"frank" and others take note: every time in the last 40 years that the GOP even made the slightest effort to reach out to the "Silent Majority" or the "social conservatives" or whatever you want to call us, the GOP won. Usually in a landslide. (POTUS 68, 72, 80, 84, 88, 00, 04, Congress 96).

Every time that the GOP has turned up its nose at us, it lost. Usually in a landslide.

Melvin- The Problem w/ Infrastructure
All of O's talk about buildings and bridges has driven the environuts crazy. Environmentalists have never met a building, bridge, dam or O&G project that they liked.

As a lawyer, I think the biggest "spread the wealth" part spent of the infrastructure policy will be going to attorneys.

Now, I don't practice environmental law, but I am a corporate lawyer and my O&G clients call me morning, noon and night in worry.

While I am not proud to proclaim that lawyers will hit a gusher in the infrastructure spendapalooza, it is ironic that Obama's "spread the wealth" policy will spread the wealth to the wealthy. Personally, I would like to just forego the wealth and decrease my income so I don't have to pay for his Socialist policies. Unfortunately, Americans will pay the price of his lunacy and our grandchildren will keep footing the bill.

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION and the "Peggy the Moochers" of the world should have zero say until they pay taxes.

It will not be priceless, since we will all pay a price for others' stupidity.

Hope For The Best
There is no doubt that the popularity of Obama wiil further increase as he starts distributing a trillion dollars. It is estimated that close to three million new jobs will be created. Thousand of miles of wide highways and thousands of well equiped new schools will be built. Lets hope before the stimulus money runs out we will have lots of trucks on the highways and lots of bright new students ready for newly opened jobs. If the opposite occurs which is empty highways and students using the new equipment to play games it will be the biggest waste of good money in history. All we can do is sit back and hope that good fortune smiles on the U.S. economy.

Miss Parker, excellent article, but you need to change your name so more people would read your articles. Whenever I see the name Parker, I think it is Kathleen Parker, a long-time liberal masquerading as a conservative. I never read her stuff, but when I saw the title of your article, I knew it was you and not Kathleen.

Yes, we do need a revolution. I have had my own little revolution since Bush Senior's first term, voting third party ever since. And, I will continue with my revolution until the Republican Party can offer up a candidate who is a conservative and not Dem Lite.

Denise
Yeah,I would probably be more like potty-mouth Prince Harry!!

God Bless and Thanks To Pres. Bush
Who cares about the opinions of the majority of ignorant and uninformed deadbeat Americans who voted for a know-nothing like Obama, except that his deadbeat, Obama, promises to give deadbeats even more for nothing. You ungrateful and ignorant deadbeats who get on this site and vote and spout off, better thank your luck stars that we have had President Bush as our president for the past 8 years. During his presidency, he has had to fight world terrorism basically single handedly as a nation. The majority of our so called allies, except for Israel, are gutless socialists. And, if this ignoramus Marxist, Obama, carries us in the direction that he wants to, we will be joining the Gutless ranks of our allies, France and England. When the United States stands down, and refuses to fight evil such as these scumbag Muslims in the Middleeast, you sorry cowards here in American better watch out, because the gutless terrorists right here at home will unleash their terror on you, and there will be nobody to stand and defend your sorry asses.

When a president of other man of power does what is right, he will always be unpopular with irresponsible folks who play the blame game all their lives. Bush could care less about popularity. He has and has had a job to do. You cowardly whiners who get on here and bash Bush better thank your lucky stars that George Bush has the courage and wisdom to take the war to the terrorist thugs, instead of having them terrorize us here at home. Now, if he would go to war against the illegals and the homegrown thugs here at home, the job would be complete. While fighting terrorism abroad, our inner cities are run by local hoodlum punk terrorists who call themselves Gangstas. We need to fight the terror here at home and clean up our towns and cities of the trash that roam our streets

a party just like the dems
Maximilian, I agree with you on one count, President Bush has kept us safe, but he has disappointed me in just about everything else. You sound like you want a republican party that is almost, but not quite like the democrats. Many of us left the dems because of who they have become. We do not want the republicans to be like them. If so, then a new party must be established for we true conservatives.

Denise:
The Doofass brags about being an invited guest to the Obugout coronation. What's the big deal about that? Make no mistake about it being a coronation. The DMSM will see to that. Going through my parents effects aftre they passed, I found invitation for the entire family to the 1984, '88 '00 and 08 POTUS inaugurations, and the 86, 94, 98, 02' and 06 Texas Gubernatorial Inaugurations.

No more republicans
First I left the democrat party because it had become the party of the left and the perverse. Now I am going to have to leave the republican party bacause it has capitulated to the dems far too many times. When I hear President Bush say just this morning the republican party is going to have to have a bigger tent, in other words bring in all the lefties and perverse ideas from the dem side and I hear that when republicans got together recently and mainly agreed they must not go against Obama, I knew the party was lost. We have a bunch of milktoast, namby-pamby people in our party now and they must be gotten rid of or we need to form a new party. I am angry as all get out and I will never vote for another person who is not against abortion, not against an ever more intrusive government, not against taxing us until we can hardly pursue happiness anymore because we have no money and will not give us a government that gets the heck out of our way. A government that lets us drill our own oil and dig our own coal. A government that doesn't have its finger in every single pie and tells us what to do at every turn. Listen up, republicans, you better get your act together or you will go the way of the dinosaurs and the democrats will run this country into the ground.

Robert/MO: Now that was intelligent! NOT

About as bright as the usual intellectually limited liberal gets.

But, if you want to see a list of democrat sex offenders and criminals, you can look at the left side of the aisle in Congress.....

And what's astounding is, the dems keep on electing them, time after time after time after time..... :-)

Hal and my three year old
Hal reminds me quite a bit of my three year old. He injects himself, uninvited, into a conversation which does not concern him and that he does not understand. Then he offers unenlightened commentary which only serves to illustrate to the rest of us how little he knows about the topic. Then he imagines that he has contributed something of interest and of value to the subject at hand, when really what everyone wants is for him to go away and let the adults have a real conversation.

Chicago,Obama's Kind Of Town

Chicago, a typical Democratic town :

Chicago .... Who Runs it?

Senators: Barack Obama & Dick Durbin
Representative: Jesse Jackson, Jr.
Illinois Governor: Rod Blogojevich (recently arrested)
Illinois House leader: Mike Madigan
Illinois Attorney General: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike)
ChicagoMayor: Richard M. Daley (son of Mayor Richard J. Daley)

The leadership in Illinois? ...... all Democrats.

Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago.

Body count in the last six months: 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago
221 killed in Iraq

State pension fund - $44 Billion in debt, worst in the country.

Cook County(Chicago) sales tax - 10.25% highest in country. (Look it
up).

Chicagoschool system - rated one of the worst in the country.

Of course, they're all blaming each other. They can't blame Republicans
because there aren't any.

This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois. And
he's
going to '"fix" Washington politics for us? Good luck and may God help

Simple solution
The Republican Party is not the conservative party. Form one.

DanNV - I'm Always True
"It's funny how after 8 years Republicans are fiscal conservatives all of a sudden."

Any one familiar with my substantive posts (instead of responses to The Unholy Trinity of Wobbie, Hal-a-doo, and Mario) knows that I am on a constant rant (as some would say) about fiscal discipline and no taxation without representation.

The only tax that I would favor would be The Butt Tax, which the food police believe we should impose on obese and overweight Americans. They want to impose the "Carbon-Free Diet" or heavy taxes on steaks, etc. in order to save the planet. Carbohydrates are no longer important, but if you eat a steak you should fear for your life.

You might ask why I would support any taxes, but I love the Law of Unintended Consequences... SAVE THE PLANET AND STARVE FAT AL GORE.

I'll stick to my one daily meal of broccoli and sea-kittens (salmon). MEOW!

fiscal conservatives?
It's funny how after 8 years Republicans are fiscal conservatives all of a sudden.

Mark
"Subject: Denise, with gas at $1.69

It is now affordable."

Yes, and it has risen twelve cents in the last week while the Obamagasm Scream Team wants to raise gas taxes so that it is $4/gal.

Personally, I think that a butt tax would raise more in revenues since most Americans carry more trunk trash (fat) than toss cigarette butts.

The Ultimate Law of Intended Consequences is represented by the SF food police that are waging a war by instituting "The Carbon-Free Diet" or want increased prices on food of which they disapprove. Screw carbohydrates because the planet is more important. A spinach salad or your life no longer refers to a healthy diet, but a healthy planet.

The irony: SAVE THE PLANET AND STARVE FAT AL.

Personally, I will stick to my daily diet of broccoli and sea-kittens (salmon). MEOW!!!

I think the best thing for Ron Paul would be becoming a Libertarian. It would give him a movement that is ready made for him. He would also bring with him many current Republicans, and thus make the Libertarian Party more viable. At this point as there appears to be no radical paradigm shift within the Republican Party, I'm for emptying it out. Are you of the Social Conservative bent and believe we need to adhere to the Constitution in this nation, then go Constitution Party. If you're not spiritually inclined or a social conservative but are for Constitutionality go Libertarian. We need to have a strong party that will not back down in pushing back all the encroachment that power lovers have wrought on us in the Federal Government.

Gay Conservative
Please know that my post about the "Center of Queerdom" was not a personal attack. Esplanade and Decatur IS called the "Center of Queerdom" by gays.

I wouldn't want you to think that I am homophobic. In fact, I think people like you, regardless of sexual preference, are an asset to Conservatism.

Weak Republicans
Shame on EVERY Republican who DOES NOT stand against this massive governmental power grab.

Republicans have got to take EVERY opportunity to teach Conservatism.

If Bush ever goes 'before the Hague',it will be on a sight seeing tour in a limo with other dignitaries.

Where will the 'Pride of Scranton' be? Sitting on a barstool in the nearest dive. Between falls,of course.

Waterboard a liberal.

Go along and get along philosophy
The subject to my discourse is exactly where the rudderless Republicans are headed. Just like in the 1960s and 1970s, it was liberal light, and they remained a minority. Well, do that in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and they will remain a small minority.

Why did I desert the Republicans in the last election cycle, voting for two Libertarians and only one Republican? They stand for a diluted version of the Democrats. So I voted for people who had principles and backbone, something the GOP has lost.

Saturday Night
I had a long heated discussion with an RNC member asking me to renew my membership The upshot of our conversation centered on my telling him that the RNC woul not get any more of my money until they actually started to walk and talk like true conservatives. No promises of yes we will. I swore off promises after they shoved mccain down our throats. Furthermore, if they couldn't get the current set of Rs to act and sound like conservatives, why should I give any more money? His comeback was they NEEDED the money to start financing dissent of the dems. I guess it was a standoff and then he hung up on me. I hope he heard me and reports to the powers that be what I said.

Republicans
hurt themselves by ostracizing Ron Paul. When the youth gets interested in politicians who have a decidedly conservative slant to them, don't mock, censor, and dismiss the guy. You made enemies of friends and it is too late to embrace them now.

Rowly, I Meant..
"Now, that Richardson has taken a powder (or threw himself under the bus, if you will) as Secretary of Commerce"

Rowly
Now, that Richardson has taken a powder (or threw himself under the belt, if you will) as Secretary of Commerce, Dean is grasping at the hope that Obama will change and throw him a bone.

Communicate the message
Republican leadership continues unable to clearly communicate the conservative position. How can it be that the solution to our economy being over-leveraged is to be even more over-leveraged? The only difference the Democrat plan makes is that now the public owns the debt privately and they want the public to own the debt through the government.

Madoff's Hanukkah Presents..
Anne: "Seems Madoff didn't rise to the legal requirement to revoke bail in one instance"

The judge is insane. The guy, who stole at least $50B, tried to send millions of dollars in heirlooms to relatives.

In letting Madoff out on probation, the judge pretty much signaled that he is going down for the rest of his life; otherwise, he would be getting credit for time served.

Slow boat to Switzerland in sight. Heck. He ought to just hire to Somali pirates. Of course, they lost 6 of their crew in the ultimate divine justice of a sea storm.

Howard Dean
The Democrats have kicked Dean to the curb, now. He is just their has-been 'useful idiot'. Will they do that to their messiah when it is proven he is not what he pretended to be?

The messiah was the 'change'candidate. He went 'back to the future' with Clinton Retreads. He has changed his mind on most of the promises he made to con the masses.

He knows his days are numbered until his past catches up to him. He cannot hide it forever. Most of us are onto him. Others will follow suit. They will deny it until it can no longer be denied.

Then the third Clinton Administration will step in. They are already set in place and anyone who knows anything realize what they are. Not to be trusted.

The socialists/Marxists will have succeeded in getting a real place in the government and the New World Order soon will be a done deal. The MSM will hype it just as they have the Democrat Party, which they are the lapdogs for.

Waterboard a liberal.(socialist/Marxist)

Mario in Mourning
Hugo Chavez on Fidel Castro:

"That Fidel in his uniform who walked the streets and towns late at night, hugging the people, won't return," Chavez said during his Sunday television and radio program. "That will remain in memories."

Chavez, who says he is steering Venezuela toward socialism, fondly recalled the last time he and Castro appeared in public together during a trip to Argentina in July 2006.

"He walked to the door of the plane and we hugged. My God. I didn't think it would be the last time."

Fidel must be on life support for Chavez to state the obvious. At least, we know where Mario is today... at High Mass for The Dead AND Dying.

Airdrop the Kleenex to Mario. He is going to be distraught.

Denise:Just heard Judge Napolitano (Fox)

explain the legal implications as to why Madoff is not in jail just now.

Seems Madoff didn't rise to the legal requirement to revoke bail in one instance, and the other was not adequately addressed in the complaint by the DA.

I KNEW the area before it became, as the homosexuals claim, "the Center of Queerdom." Not my words. Theirs.

New Orleans sort of works on a Plessy v. Ferguson rule. In the Quarter, we all just have our own little corners... Galatoire Gals, the Latin Quarter, the Irish Center, Queerdom, Hookers, Strippers, Female Impersonators, the No-Go (without personal safety device) Zone After Dark, etc. All equal, but independently separated. You pretty much need a local tour guide.

Of course, had Hal been correct about me being in bed with gays, I may have been visiting the Esplanade and Decatur corner bar...

Shareholder Revolt
Sorry Ms. Parker,

Shareholder Revolt
As usual, Michelle Malking nailed it. Republicans have been cowed into a corner by the folks who own and control the liberal media. Despite the immature gloating by Liberals, we all will benefit or suffer from the policies our Government will implement. Government spending without Government being friendly to business will not result in a better economy. That should have been learned during the Depression. Obama is a creation of the media. He is supposed to be smart, let's hope he is smart enough to know where the money really comes from. It's not from the Government.

"That any premise that unregulated free markets were a sound idea ended with the Great Depression so why do Republicans continue to parrot economic concepts that are both historically inaccurate and economically untenable?"

Credibility
McCain lost quite a bit of credibility on earmarks when he swallowed $150B of them in his rush to vote for the first bailout bill. The fact that most Democrats and independents are now in favor of Obama's proposed bailout doesn't encourage me.

I believe that the initial instincts of almost everyone were correct. The fact that the prevailing wisdom now is different hasn't convinced me that the bailouts are correct. I believe the results will be new meaning for the term trickle down: a few benefits will trickle down to the poor and middleclass and power and riches will be lavished on our rulers and selected special interests.

McCain did vow "no earmarks, strong defense, and cut spending." He was the first candidate in history to seriously propose earmark reform. He also has no law degree. I hope you voted for him.

Since McCain failed, however, no other presidential candidate will ever again run on a similar platform. I agree, instigating a one-day national primary system is a real reform that would help our party.

Once the nominated candidate emerges from the primary, however, Conservatives must stick together in spite of any disappointments. That means that social Conservatives should stand behind the Goldwater-style candidates and the fiscal Conservatives should be willing to support a Huckabee-style candidate. Let's stop fighting amongst ourselves.

Reflect for a moment on all the anti-McCain, anti-Bush venom spurted by Conservatives here on Townhall. Wouldn't that energy have been better directed against Obama? I, for one, would have gladly "bit the bullet" and voted for Ron Paul had he won the nomination, despite sharply disagreeing with his foreign policy. A Ron Paul presidency would certainly be better than this: someone with the same pacifism minus the free-market ideals. Simply, NO CANDIDATE from the election could have done a worse job than B.O.

McCain causes RINOism.

Will A Shareholder Revolt Matter?
I suspect that there is a lack of meaningful ideas emanating out of the Republican Party due to the fact that the very essential concepts that the Party is predicated upon are profoundly in question at this time.

For starters, in a period of financial turmoil is the pontificating of the virtues of unrestrained free market economics likely to resonate with a majority of Americans? We should not forget that it was House Republicans that insisted in a partial socialization of the banks as a quid-pro-quo in the bailout package. Moreover it is historically dishonest to talk about America as ever having been a truly free market economy seeing as it has a history of government involvement in economic affairs dating to the administration of James Madison. That any premise that unregulated free markets were a sound idea ended with the Great Depression so why do Republicans continue to parrot economic concepts that are both historically inaccurate and economically untenable? To what extent is the idea of limited government an engaging concept in a globally connected world where most problems are national and international in scope.

Is it time for a reformulation of what the Republican Party stands for? How will it attract the voters beyond the white conservative base that it needs to win elections? One thing is for sure and that is that the idea of Karl Rove that most Americans are right of center is wrong and thus there is no prospect of a permanent Republican Majority just as it is unlikely that the Democrats can achieve the same.

Could it be that the Repblicans are ideologically bankrupt at this point in time and if so what would a shareholder revolt accomplish if the party has shot its bolt with regard to the ideas it has to offer the electorate.

"I do care simply because it makes us weaker and terrorists stronger"

that they care what we do. I doubt that Iran or AQ is going to change its behavior if we agree to impose no torture harsher than shorten potty breaks.

The terrorists always believe that we are doing something that we are not or not doing something that we are supposed to do. Even AQ takes responsibility for 9/11, the Arab Street still argues that we flew our own planes into our own buildings. I remember after the Boxing Day Tsunami that there were rumblings that we had caused it.

If we say yes to gays in the military, will Iran say yes to gays period? Heck, no, because there are no gays in Iran since they are executed.

What has damaged conservatives and the Republican Party more than anything else is social conservativism. That kooky fringe of Haggert, Fallwel, Dobson, Robertson and their followers has driven the vast middle and what they call RINOs into the Democratic Party.

GET OUT!
The Republican Party is DEAD. It needs a total ENEMA. This Party needs to be REBUILT, from the ground up. No more ATTORNEYS. Let's seek out all the returning HEROES that we can find. If all of the GOP candidates were given equal coverage in the primaries by the GOP pundits and the MSM, the nominee would have been either Hunter, Paul, Tancredo or Keyes.....and any one of them would have made a fool of Obama in a debate.

The only reason Congressman Paul has not risen in stature is because of us Republicans. We have a leader out there, we just do not want him. Just remember elections have consequences and you get what you vote for. The Republican voters wanted John McCain, followed by (not in order of votes won) Rudy G., M. Romney, M. More Obama madness.
Stephen Dinan reports at the Washington Times:

Until last week, Carol M. In the words of the Incredible Hulk
The line I will always remember from the first TV movie, The Incredible Hulk, was when Dr. Banner said to the obsessive reporter, "don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

We need to repeat this sentiment to the sorry excuse that pretends to be the elected members of our party. We can start with the RNC; they seem bent on pushing the party to an even more groveling state. You want to torture me???? I guess that does prove that you really do not want any part of Christians. A real Christian would never approve of torture

13 Bravo
My sentiments exactly. The issue is not that 56% of the Republicans say they oppose the latest spending bill (following the Bush/Paulson bailout), but that 34% say they support it and the other 10% have no opinion. By definition, this demonstrates why Bush/Paulson took the actions they did - and got most of the GOP in the Senate to support them.

Listening to McConnell and Boehner, one is left with the perception that those who think the GOP can stage a comeback in two years, are merely dreaming. After all, just what position does the GOP have that looks or feels any different from that of the Democrats on the economy?

So now, we see 4 GOP senators have decided to retire, three of which are in competitive states, and one of which - Kansas - has a Democratic governor that may well choose to run.

56% of a party that represents only 31% of so of the voting public - isn't going to elect anyone to much of anything.

We're reaping what we have sowed - and this has been coming for 10 years.

Combine thuis with the fact that we have failed to enforce immigration laws for the last 20 years, guaranteeing the systematic change in our national makeup, and whatever the GOP becomes, Conservatives are going to need a new home.

Let's Be Clear - Bush Fiscal Policies
were absolutely not conservative in nature. Is there still a question about that fact? And no, I don't mind being called a meanie conservative if it means we're passing on no debt, and no entitlement budget-busters to our kids.

Prescription drug program, bailouts to nowhere, No Child Left Behind, etc.... Bush policies angered fiscal conservatives. To those of you who lump him in with us - he isn't one of us. I can't even believe the guy claims to be a mountain biker. I want him out of that sport, too, before he gives that a bad name.

A general strike . . .
would get the attention of BOTH the government and wall street. In addition, the demise of the federal reserve and the REQUIREMENT for "money" to be backed by GOLD would straighten out this situation in a hurry. Current "debts" would be paid back with existing "federal reserve notes" (which would be increasingly worthless) while ANY future debts would be paid back with REAL money (backed by gold.

The can be no shareholder revolt as long as Democrats in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Florida pick the Republican presidential nominee. Elections have consequences
..and the funny thing is, you guys act as though the massive failure of baby boomer conservatism--the economic collapse, the strategic blunders, the widespread moral erosion--is because the Republicans were not conservative enough. That is silly and ridiculous. While the Reeps were not conservative in the sense of properly defending our moral heritage and the fragility of civilization and public order and those things that conservatives have classically done, they were plenty conservative in the Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannity sense of the term--in YOUR sense of the term. And it drove our country into the ground.

You clowns go sit down. Try to recover a conservatism that is a tribute to our country and our humanity--maybe a type of post-boomer conservatism. In the meantime, the adults are going to be cleaning up your stinking mess..

Only the government... my posterior.

Great kudos to you, Star... for continuing to do the work of several full-grown conservative men.

I will, however, most enthusiastically support the GOP again, when... and if... a principled leader with "a pair of them" emerges.

Now, that would really be something.

But no matter how angry or disguisted I get, I will NEVER "go third party" or sit at home in a general election... giving the destructive opposition a free ride.

And I will NEVER EVER become part of the gang of leftist thugs who consistently keep hurting their own... you know, the very ones who they say they claim to want to help.

But tragically, I fear that the ever growing government monster is here to stay.

And real people will suffer real pain.

And the media will keep on "spinning".

And pols will continue to "assist" us with the problems that they themselves helped to create and perpetuate.

And most Americans will do nothing.

Apparently, We Hold Non-Voting Shares
If you want to continue making an analogy b/t the Republican Party & a publicly held business corporation, well, it looks as though the grass roots all hold non-voting common stock. The voting stock is all held by the elite party politicians & apparachikocracy, & the pop media, its pundits, & academia. The voting stock isn't for sale to the little people.

Every time we try to tell our elected GOP reps "No! Don't do that! It's poison!" or "Stand up for this, it's a basic value to us!" with all-too-rare exceptions they shove their pudgy lil' fingers in their ears, holler "LALALALALA!" & run as fast as their bandy lil' legs can scurry to vote w/ the Demmies for "bailouts," tax hikes, energy rationing, land grabs, confirming leftist activist judges, gun bans, activist lawyers' full employment acts, suppressions of political speech, new departments & agencies, porky public works "infrastructure" $$$, surrender of US sovereignty, pandering to victimology rackets, you name it.

Furthermore, the GOP elite & pundits have already worn out their excuses and stupid phoney strategies aimed at attracting phantoms into a meaningless "big tent". We did "moderate" & "bipartisan" now, & look at the result. McCain McLost. Been there. Done that.

The only possible reason for the party to continue on that path is because it WANTS to lose. Suppressing & marginalizing conservatism is more important to them than winning elections; they've got jobs either way.

Look closely at Illinois
We are seeing what a cesspool of corruption exists in Illinois has Obama escaped the stench? I seriously doubt it.
Look at those in congress who are supposed to represent us 95% of them are as corrupt as the Illinois politicians.
If we are to take back our beloved country from the filth who represent us we must start at once by dumping McConnell and Boehner who are far too weak to lead anything. McCain was our candidate and he was weak, now we are led by more old, weak defeated politicians tryig desperately to hang on to power. WE need leadership in Congress for the Republicans whom shall they be?

Star/folks
"...Is this really the formula for restoring American greatness and prosperity?... "

Actually yes it is. The current conservatism has so ravaged the nation that massive and extreme actions are needed. I must add that I am throughly enjoying the extreme rants of the primarily minority red state folks although I do see blue states like IN and FL represented by red remnants.

Trying to stay relevant
is what an associated press "news" release called republican reactions to the stimulous proposal. This "news" went on in a similar vein not once allowing for the fact that there are well intentioned opinions on both side of the asle.

Shareholder Revolt.

What is a shareholder revolt? Not sure what shareholder means.

Conservatism is not dead
It's divided. Until all conservative thought and effort congeals around fiscal responsibility, with rampant spending and deficits snowballing into the single biggest threat to liberty, I don't see any hope for conservative philosophy to prevail anywhere.

Obama and the Socialists have won the battle, but not the war. I cannot believe the Republicans have conceded to Bush and Obama on this issue. By failing to consistently voice strong objections based on conservative spending and fiscal management principles, opting instead for consensus and bipartisanship, they guarantee Republicans WILL lose in 2010. Maybe by 2012 they'll get a clue and figure out a sizable group of voters are witholding support for them over this issue.

Well, Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
Frank says: "Unless it involeves sodomy, a gun, an illegal alien, a fetus, or a bible conservtaives don't seem much to care. What about the economy?"

Frank, you are an IDIOT! I am a FISCAL CONSERVATIVE. My two priorities are fear from terrorism and fear from terrorist BIG GOVERNMENT.

If you spent half a nanosecond here, you would quickly realize that most of us don't talk about religion. In fact, the only time the subject heats up is when gays come and tell how we are "discriminating" against them.

Frankly, I have been married and don't know what the furor for marriage is all about. After spending 6 years in the matrimonial penitiary, I have NO desire in discussing marriage. PERIOD.

No taxation without representation.

Back to the Future
There's one line that summarizes what should be the Republican platform, "Back to the Future." Even liberal Democrats must know that an expansion of the government is not good for anybody. Governors like Schwarzenegger should be turned out of office because they were not fiscally responsible. I also include N.J. Gov. Corzine who has run up a huge deficit.

We voters have the power and we only have to use it. If we must manage our personal budgets than our elected officials are required to manage state and national budgets.

It should be our way or the highway!

Of course, in N.J. we have a lot of dimwit Democrats who would elect Bernie Madoff as governor if he ran on the Democrat ticket. Asking "Are there any intelligent Democrats?" is like asking, "Is there any other intelligent life in the universe?"

54% to 37%???
Over a third of republicans are OK with this. This is exactly why I do not trust nor belong to any party. First the socialists took over the Democratic Party and now with barely over half of Republicans actually opposing bigger government. Disgusting! What does GOP stand for again? Government Over Principle?

I guess that either the trolls who show up here to proclaim the death of conservatism are right or most of us conservatives no longer identify with the Republicans and thus do not call ourselves Republicans. Reagan once said that he did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left him. Do we now add the Republican Party to that sentiment?

I agree

I think Ken Blackwell needs to lead the charge. He can articulate free market priciples and why we need to fight these Bailouts.

Duncan can fundraise and Saul, Chip, Michael and Katon can split up the country and hammer applied conservative principles on a local, State and Federal level.

My Plan
Good article, Star.

Personally, I am waiting to see who is elected Republican National Chairman later this month. If it's somebody who starts a conservative revolution in the party then I will hang around.

If not, I think all conservatives have no choice but to go elsewhere. The problem is that there needs to be a well-known national leader that says "everybody go join this party" with others that soon follow.

Thoughts?

Still Holding Out For Steele
I still believe that Michael Steel and his Blueprint for the Future will help lead our party out of chaos. Remember, it's not that our party has lost its way, but instead its that our party has lost the ability to channel great ideas from the grassroots up into the leadership inside the Beltway. Michael has made it clear in his platform that stronger state parties and more input from the republican ranks down at the grassroots is what will eventually bring us back into the forefront once again.

The stimulus package is based upon fundamentally flawed philosophy. However our current system is so broken that for any member of congress to openly opppose it he/she is exposing themselves to immediate cries of elitism or for not helping create jobs. In a system where you get re-elected every two years, can a representative truly afford to take that risk in the current environment where everything Obama says is glorified by the media and the liberal throngs who see him as messiah? Sen. McConnel is right to cautiously follow and try to win small battles where he can - that's the only way that in the long run he can win the war.

Shareholder Revolt?
Absolutely! Folks, it's your children’s' future which is at stake, both in the horrendous tax burden to pay off the debt and the interest on the debt but also on a behemoth and oppressive government with greatly reduced liberties.

The “recovery plan” (aka, bailout) and the “stimulus package” (aka, mega load of garbage) is nothing less than an advanced taxing scheme without representation.

There are other options: 1) Tax holiday for 6 months combined with government belt-tightening.
2) Let the private sector self-correct without bailout or stimulus. Reform the financial industry in the right way (minimum government intervention and maximum private sector accountability).
3) There are others but less do-able.

What a revolting development
And remember just one thing:
The Republican administration of "whats his name" got us here.

Switching Loyalties ...Bye Bye GOP
Switching my loyalties from the GOP to "independent" is my silent revolt.

NO LONGER will I settle for holding my nose and flipping the voting switch.

I'm done, I've had it, and NO MORE!

Face it, the "republicans" of today are just the equal of "JFK's democrats" of the early 60's.

The CONSTITUTION isn't living, it doesn't breathe or have a heat beat, it was shot and killed 230 odd years ago (referring to what it's written on)it doesn't "evolve," it exists, and is our LAW.

The GOP is nothing but Lawyers and lawyers exist to make more laws and see their names on them.
They don't represent the "PEOPLE" anymore.

The USA has tons of great "people" and "WE THE PEOPLE" need to take control again and not let lawyers rule us.
