Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

How can you not feel that emptiness in the pit of your stomach as you watch our financial markets spin downward? The broad stock market indices are down well over 40 percent since the beginning of the year. Losses are somewhere in the neighborhood of $9 trillion.

The real economic realities behind these numbers are starting to show up. The only question at this point is how severe the recession we are now entering will be.

Maybe, when everyone is depressed I am supposed to write cheery things to encourage folks. But I can't, because I care about our country and what I see is not encouraging.

We just had a presidential election that in some circles produced a lot of euphoria. But I believe that at some point -- I hope sooner rather than later -- many Americans are going to wake up and realize that this election was not a cure for our problems but a symptom of the disease.

I think this is what our crashing financial markets are telling us.

There is a well-known quote from a less well-known philosopher -- George Santayana -- that those who don't remember history will repeat it.

The failure of communism and socialism is not that far behind us. Yet Americans cannot seem to recall that it happened -- and why it happened.

What characterizes these systems? Government control. Central planning. And Godlessness.

Let's consider the sad and pathetic state of our American automobile companies.

As the chairmen of GM, Ford, and Chrysler sat in Washington begging for public money to survive, Honda was celebrating the opening of a new non-union plant in Greensburg, Ind., which will produce 200,000 vehicles annually.

The starting hourly wage at this plant will be $18.41 per hour -- about $10 less than at the American companies. There were 33,000 applicants for 900 job openings.

Americans want to work, can work, and can compete with anyone. They just need to be free to do it.

In 1970, GM had 50 percent of the U.S. auto market. Today it has 20 percent. What happened?

The world changed in 1973. We were hit with the oil shock. The oil producing countries' cartel, OPEC, discovered its power, and drove up energy prices.

The power of a free country and free markets is that people, when left alone, will adjust to change and do what they need to do. In fact, that's what happened in businesses that were left alone. Changes and adjustments were made and overall the country is about twice as energy efficient today as it was in 1970.

But in our high profile auto industry that's not what happened. Our politicians, with cooperation from our auto industry executives, decided that the auto companies could not be left to their own resources to adjust to new realities.

First, we enacted import quotas on Japanese cars. Second, we enacted fuel standards to dictate to our car companies what kind of cars to make. And, of course, third, the power of the union was left intact.

Now look where we are. We have a destroyed industry that is the product not of Americans not being able to compete, but of allowing itself to become dependent on government.

This is why our auto companies have failed. This is why communist and socialist countries have failed.

A few days ago Rahm Emanuel, who Barack Obama has picked to be his chief of staff, spoke to a gathering of CEOs at a Wall Street Journal conference in Washington.

He went through the agenda to expect from the Obama administration. He sounded like a commissar from the Soviet Union. Government control and planning in health care, energy, the economy, and financial markets.

Why are our financial markets so pessimistic? They are bracing. The market sees the sad news that Americans have not learned from history. And it looks like we are about to relive its hard lessons.

I guess the MSM and liberals finally got what they wished for these last 8 years and that is a recession. We kept hearing the constant drum beat of recession, recession, and recession. Remember, be careful what you wish for.

Next, the liberals think that the government is the solution to what ails us. Really it is the government intervention in the free markets that has led us to this mess and Obama promises even more big government.

Fact Checking
"The starting hourly wage at [the new Honda plant in Indiana] will be $18.41 per hour -- about $10 less than at the American companies."

In fact under this year's UAW contract, the starting hourly wage will be $14. Note that the Honda plant pays MORE. Better benefits, too.

The Big 3 auto makers got greedy and
shortsighted. They made huge gas guzzlers and jacked the price up because thats what Americans wanted. And for a time they made big profits and Japan meanwhile planned ahead and made smart economy cars that were well made. When GM came out with it's first hybrid they picked a giant SUV.

Two Years To Really Screw Us
This bunch of morons will have two years to put in place programs that will drag our economy down even further. Even if we get back majorities in both houses in 2010 there is little chance the damage could be undone.

The only hope we may have is a leadership willing to shut down the whole thing by refusing to pass a budget. That will take some guys with cojones made of brass. I hope they show up.

No TruLib....
What we really need is for Americans to show some self-reliance, personal responsibility and objectivity. Our current slide into socialism/communism was caused by ill-informed voters who allowed emotions and self-interest to place the most liberal senator in the white house. Now we are watching the government assume ownership and control of the financial world and our industries (in addition to the control they already exert over our media and our educational system). This will continue unless the deadbeats in our society like Peggy the Mooch agree to pay for their own gas and homes and the bleeding hearts agree to work for the good of our country rather than knee-jerk "social fairness". Personally, I'm buying a safe to protect the little bit of pay the government will allow me to keep and learning self-defense to prepare for the coming riots.

Regulation....
You forgot oil regulation.

I find it funny also that the Asian Pacific countries and China are talking they need to remove regulation, and taxation and this deflationary will be over shortly. Austrian economics there, unbelievable.

Yet, so called free America we talk of more regulation and taxation. Keneysian system that brought us to where we are and allows socialism. Is now being presented to get us out of it. It will prolong it, but then I figured that was Obama's mission anyhow, to destroy America.

Till the Federal Reserve is abolished. These cycles of national deflation will exist. Robbing the citizens of their wealth.

You can hold, your in it for the long term. Well, when retirement comes you wonder why inflation ate it all, if you did not go broke. If you know the cycles like an speculator you gain wealth. 2000 the recession began or financial correction, to the unawares. Some were moving money abroad for preservation.

Without Federal reserve the deflation is more like booms and bust. More local or district, not whole country.

Another Depression?
Too many in government believe they have the answers to solve the countries myriad of problems. Think Hoover, think FDR; they too had that same belief and pushed this country into the Great Depression. Read The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes to get a picture of whats coming.

The same people who think they have the answers, think that they have a right to the fruit of our labor. The power to tax is the power to destroy and it places man in servitude. The income tax gives that power. Remember the income tax was determined unconstitutional until 1913 when it was legalized by the 16th Amendment. Initially citizens were taxed 1% of their income rising to 7% with incomes rising to $500,000. Just compare that to today's rates to see how onerous it has become!

People like texaschuck are the problem.

The only thing more staggering than the abject ignorance of texashuck is imagining the magnitude of misinformation that has been successfully embedded in his brain that would cause him to be so belligerently proud of it.

How can one not despair for the fate of the nation knowing that more than half of the population is enthusiastically committed to marching off the cliff in lockstep with texaschuck?

Ms Parker:
These four sentences: "What characterizes these systems? Government control. Central planning. And Godlessness." constitutes a summation of why the Republicans in general, and conservative republicans specifically, fared so poorly at the polls this, and past election cycles.

The rhetorical question is appropriate. The first two answers are accurate, relevant and inclusive. The third is irrelevant, and divisive. It serves only to undermine the correctness of the first two. And, it scares away rational voters.

Adding that last little comment displays an unwillingness to recognize the necessity of keeping religion out of politics, and equally important, keeping politics out of religion. More than anything else, it is that blind spot in conservative thinking that has marginalized the Republican Party.

A large percentage of people in
this country do not want to be responsible for their life. They want a guarentee that no matter what choices they make they will suffer no consequences. I live in the People Repulic of Austin, TX. I am one of a handful of conservative (not Rebuplican) thinking folks in the office I work at. I listen to the others, it is scary, alot of them are 10 to 15 years younger than me and this is the future of the country. They are willing to give up their freedoms to have their health care paid for, school paid for. Heck, you should only have to spend your money and the things you want, not the things you need. Self reliance does not even enter their mind. Also listening to them you would think that Obama was the second coming and goverment will take care of everything. I have a feeling alot of them are going to be in for a rude awakening.

Big Guvmint
Star is correct: government doesn't run private enterprise efficiently in the long term.

One reason is that government can run a business into the ground without culpability or punishment. The private sector, on the other hand, suffers greatly when companies go broke.

I've read many posts from the leftists. NOT ONE OF THEM has defended socialism, but many have, in fact, advocated socialism.

Obviously, the lefties in America are clueless when it comes to allowing big government run their lives. After all, they elected Obama/Biden.

Now we know why you guys lost
So get rid of quotas, get rid of standards, get rid of the union, and everything will be just fine for the industry, the workers and the consumers.

You've got to be kidding.

Buy out, not bail out. Especially when it reaches penny stock status. If the feds or the UAW won't, the Chinese are waiting to pick it up.

Then fire the arrogant batch in charge, let the workers pick some smart managers, press the feds for single-payer heathcare, like they should have done in the late 1940s to get that burden off the price of each car, then we have a chance.

All Part of the Plan
Americans are ignorant of history and the principles this country was founded upon, and so they fall for a socialist demagogue like Obama. But why is this? It is because our schools have been infiltrated by leftist radicals who refuse to teach our children about such things. This was done intentionally and now we see the results. Shame on us conservatives for talking a good game about government schools but not really doing anything about it.

InsightingTruth - 8:08AM
I do not speak for Ms. Parker (I ain't smart enough). I disagree with your conclusion that her article intimates injecting religion into politics.

In context of her analysis, I believe Ms. Parker is saying that without an agreed to set of moral underpinnings, the United States cannot exist as a Constitutional Republic. A lack of agreed to moral underpinnings only leads to chaos and oppression.

Then again, I may be all wet. Wouldn't be the first time.

Thomas (NH)
The American right abdicated its responsibility and allowed the socialists to take over schools, unions, federal government employees, etc.

RINOs like the Bushes, Hagel and McCain thought they could appease the socialists. It didn't work.

The reason the left demonized Joe McCarthy in 1950 is that he was right, not wrong. As Obama plays the race card, so, too, does the left play the "McCarthyism" card.

Believe it or not, the socialists won and America is headed downhill. It will take herculean effort by the right to correct things and win our country back. I wonder if we've got enough people with cojones to do it?

Depressions are part of the market cycle
We are not entering a Depression that is likely to be the largest in history. People have to recognize that depressions are a natural part of the market cycle. When people are too optimistic during bubbles and incur too much debt, that debt eventually goes bad and a depression results. All the government bailouts can delay the effects, but can not prevent them. Eventually, the government must stop the bailouts since the government itself will be at risk of failure. Because of the timing here, Bush and therefore the entire Republican party will take full blame for the Depression. The Democrats will eventually "cure" the depression by a massive radical move - a coordinated devaluation of the currency or even a transition to a global currency at a highly devalued rate of exchange. Borrowers will reap huge windfalls and savers will be wiped out. The Dems will also get rid of defined contribution retirement plans, enact single payer medicine for all, reinvigorate the unions, and further the cause of socialist world government. The Democrats will be big heroes and will be runninbg against Bush's Depression for the next 60 years.

If Only:
For millenia human beings have recognized the value of certain principles. The principles I speak of are nearly universal. They transcend government, culture, and religion.

Human nature is human nature. There will always be those who seek advantage through fraud or force. Many of those who are so inclined, will seek positions of power within our institutions. The only protection we have against evil is the decentralization of power.

There is no need for complete agreement if you do not have the power to infringe on my rights, and I do not have the power to infringe on your rights. That means that neither of us can imbue government functionaries with the power to ignore our mutual rights.

I do not believe that you are not "smart enough" to see that Ms Parker's invocation of the term "godlessness" as being fundamental to the failure of communism is superfluous. This is a purely subjective comment that cannot be proven one way or the other. Its use only serves to mitigate the impact of the other factors, and undermines her ability to persuade her readers.

Amen, Sister!
Your comments are spot on. The hard part is going to be reversing the flood tide. Pray we can!

FREE MARKET CYCLES

.....Prosperity (heads) and Poverty (tails) are opposite sides of the same coin ...Prosperity depends on market growth but nothing can grow indefinetly ...when limits are reached then markets have to pull back ...

.....Free markets will always operate in boom and bust cycles and the wise investor plans accordingly ...squirrels and ants instintively store nuts and food for winter but foolish man believes in letting the good times roll until the bad times come and then he turns to Government for help ...

.....When Government tries to contol markets the end result is uniform poverty for all except a small elite class of wealthy rulers ...this is a Government two headed coin ...heads they win .....COLOSSUS

Ms. Parker's invocation of the term "Godlessness" is on point. History is on her side.

We will agree to disagree.

In.Tut. - as if

In my opinion,
There is something missing in all of your posts, which
is the phrase- “In my opinion”

Along with such facts as are in your posts,
you state your personal opinions as if they are also facts.
They are not facts; they are merely your opinions.
“They are purely subjective comments that cannot
be proven one way or the other.”

You are reading the sentence:
” What characterizes these systems?
As if it says:
” What made these systems fail?”
So you are quite wrong to attribute the
““invocation of the term "godlessness" as being
fundamental to the failure of communism”
to the author- it is your predilection clouding your perception.

Star Parker
writes, "many Americans are going to wake up and realize that this election was not a cure for our problems but a symptom of the disease."

Well said. The disease is primarily pride coupled with a good dose of ignorance. The pride of the few that believe they can order things and make them better when the opposite is true. The ignorance of the masses that want to believe the right man or woman can order things and make them better. The ignorance and pride that believes they know enough, that they know all that is necessary when that will never be true. Obama will be humbled and perhaps humiliated but, he will never admit it and neither will his followers, devout believers in their own ability to order things just so.

If Only:
What evidence do you have that godlessness is a factor in the failure of communist and/or socialist regimes?

Insighting Truth
As I said, we will agree to disagree. This is not the forum for more formalized debate. And no, I am not deflecting or refusing your challange.

If Only:
Okay. It was not a challenge. It was a question.

We fail to learn from history
So true Ms Parker: "Many Americans are going to wake up and realize that this election was not a cure for our problems but a symptom of the disease."

B.O. will most likely disgrace himself in the next two years. His very questionable win does not signal the death of the GOP. The GOP is not dead but it needs to reconfigure and appeal to the younger voters without pandering. The young typically gravitate toward the "nanny state" until they “grow up” and they see and get the common sense of conservative values.

"If you're a good enough organizer, panderer, and BS artist, you can get elected against a truth teller. No one wants to believe reality when they can look forward to 'hope' and 'change' especially 'change' that will energize 'hope' and 'hope' that'll bring about 'change.' Wow! I feel like dancing amongst the daffodils, don't you?" --comedian Dave Weinbaum

Americans are short sighted!!
I love reading this stuff, GM and Ford,Dodge made huge Gas Guzzlers, Ya there Trucks and SUV"s, but Toyota and Nissan both with there Tundra and Titan plus both of there huge SUV'S are gas guzzlers just like GM,Ford,Dodge are so what is the difference except American Disloyalty. Toyota and Nissan did the same thing as GM,Ford,Dodge building big trucks and SUV'S for the American market to get a piece of the Truck & SUV market share since the big 3 Owned and %100 market share until Toyota, Nissan built there Trucks. Americans are short sighted because minus just the small cars which Americans only buy when there is a gas crunch or price hike or the normal Liberal crying Wolf most Americans want a mid to large car to Cruise in that is Comfortable and would sacrifice economy for Comfort, plus go back and factually look at how Toyota and Nissan and Honda have had there cars grow in size to meet the American Market and most of the Mid sized American cars have comparable gas mileage to any of the Mid sized Foreign cars and don't forget that Toyota and Nissan created Lexus, Infiniti and they don't have spectacular gas mileage so unless we are talking just the small cars which in comparison to the small cars of the 70's and early 80's gas mileage is not as good, so what it boils down to is a lot of whining from Liberals who spend more making assumptions based on emotion instead of going out or back and looking at facts about the cars and the trends of Americans and what we want based on the times. Plus Build Quality American Vs Foreign are pretty close its Design Engineering that American cars have lacked in when comparing to the tight Build Tolerances of Foreign Cars, but that is getting better.

Constitutional Crisis
The Supreme Court CANNOT DUCK Obama’s Birth Certificate Constitutional Crisis (albeit the media blackout on the issue). The messiah will NOT become President! This 90-minute blogradio program explains why:

http://politicalpistachio.blogspot.com/2008/11/why-is-obama s-birth-certificate-still.html

A clear view
Star gives a concise description of the past and of the future. Too many Americans voted because they were "hearing with their eyes and thinking with their feelings". When our nation is again suffering as it did in the 1930's, only those who understand how to endure and how to be free of depending on the government will be able to survive. This sounds pessimistic, but it actually sees the light at the end of the tunnel. We will not be destroyed. There are 366 "Fear nots" in the Bible-one for each day including Leap Year. We live a day at the time. Each day must begin with "Fear not for I am with you always".

Simple Solutions
If you do not graduate from high school - no vote, no benefits from the US treasury. There will be exceptions due to physical/mental illness. Education, or lack thereof, has to have teeth.

Political money only from individual US citizens with no limits and 24hr publishing via the internet. No more collection funnels via PACs and Unions. Ther is no guarantee for money to redress the Republic - Only individuals with a Voice and Vote.

Repeal the amendment that allows direct election of US Senators. This needs to go back to the State(s) Houses for a Voice in the Federal House. Current configuration allows bypass of local governments and the masses to vote themselves benefits form the Treasury. Founding Fathers wanted Bicameral legislative body - One side representing the population and the other representing the States.

We must end Politics as a career position. Term limits or no lifetime benefits would force electees back to the private sector - where the voters live. Politics is one of the only professions where the longer you practice it - the worse you are.

We must remember that government is of the people, by the people, for the people and at the Federal Level - If We the People (Voters) cannot do it (insert issue here) the Federal Government should not do it.

Enact the Fair Tax Plan ASAP!!!!

Who dumb? Who Smart.
Well Said, Star. We love ya. you always make so much sense. tv has "SMART" overflowing our media but "WISE" is more needed and less available.

If I were a liberal and wanted to make a people dependent on my party and take them socialist so they would keep electing me, Id start forty years ago educating conservative kids in schools to my way of thinking.

If I were a republican, Id start forty years ago and get so greedy that Id lean more and more to support of big corps and payoffs from lobbyists, along with pork barrel spending, that Id ignore a little old thing like the liberals stealing all future elections by educating my kids with liberal thinking while I was so busy making money I forgot I had kids. Are we missing something here?

David:
It is obvious that you have given your simple solutions considerable thought. Of your five suggestions, only appointed Senators and the Fair Tax represent positive steps. The other three ideas have been tried in one form or another, and are unworkable for a variety of reasons.

Doomed to Repeat History
Excellent column Ms Parker! Great posts by redsand-CT & sarah conner-TX!
I am not old enough to have experienced what Hoover& FDR's administration did to this
country, but still have relatives who did and
can read about history!!!
However, I WAS..repeat WAS one of the 20 yr old idiot-democrats who voted for CARTER!,who saw the Nixon-era as catastrophic!
(goes to show 20 yr olds are SO NAIVE & stupid)!
Thinking the "long gas lines" & "high interest rates" were a hold-over from the Nixon-era!!!
Just like these "Gen-X&Y-ers-obamanites" think Bush is the cause of this economy "circling the drain"!
WRONG! Wake-up(obamanites/Rinos) and smell the Starbucks(if any are left)and when you
are standing in the unemployment lines(if there's any money left after the rest of us folk are taxed into Bankruptcy),History is re-peating itself!!!
Hmmmm, wasn't it the "Private-Jet Auto-Execs" who helped put Obama/Biden in office, piloted themselves to D.C. asking for more taxpayer monies????!!!!
*Hosea 4:6* "People are destroyed for lack of knowledge;and because you(a powerful nation) have rejected knowledge(or refused to learn from history),I(God) will also reject you,so that you are no longer(the powerful nation)and seeing you have forgotten the law(of God),I will also reject your children"!
............you have been warned..........

EVERYBODY WILL BE UNION
The fix is in. The unions were promised that the FIRST agenda item, more important than fixing the economy, more important that national defense, more important than ANYTHING is card check. 100's of times in the last few decades the unions get a majority of workers to sign a petition for a union election, but when they have a chance to vote in a secret ballot they don't unionize. Now, just signing the petition is enough. There will be no election, no secret ballot. Just a couple of thugs shoving a card and a pen at you and telling you to sign. Every plant, every industry, every profession in this country without exception will be unionized in the next 2 years. Just like the auto industry they will be unable to compete, but the unions will push for punitive tariffs or other charges that will "level the playing field" and "save American jobs". The first great depression will look like a Sunday school picnic after this one. Some of this is just greed. Some is a conscious desire to destroy the capitalist system. Either way this will be the end of the country you grew up in and love.

There is merit to your point, but your opinions would have much more clout if you were respectful towards those whose opinions differ from yours. if she is a dumba$$ broad for disagreeing with you, then does that make you a dumba$$ for disagreeing with her? Be polite and impress us. If others didnt have opinions that differ from yours it sure would be boring.

Hmm, whats the male version of broad? lol well, any way get get my point. have a great day, and stay off those chat rooms, they teach ya bad manners. lol Jer

Government planning!
We are now seeing the stark evidence of the lack of government planning and mangagement. Somehow, there has to be a balance of government planning and too much government planning. Just ignoring things leads inevitably to crisis.

"Government planning!

Why is it that government planning can accomplish what the market cannot? On what planet are corrupt, power-hungry bureaucrats more competent and trustworthy than profit-driven executives?

Government oversight? Yes.
Central planning? No, lest we become another failed socialist state.

BASEBALLDOC
Your post on the markets is exactly correct and my opinion for years. I have been around long enough to see three economic cycles, operating my own business successfully during these cycles, sometimes as an consultant to individuals who bought and sold companies.. Economic cycles are like water, it will seek it's own level and re-adjust to the market, basic economics 101, supply and demand. When there is a demand by consumers for a product, the supply will increase by companies which are aware of the market. When the demand decreases a company either provides a better product or a different product and the price of the product will adjust accordingly. This works as long as the government does not try to manipulate the economy.
I have done feasbility studies for companies to make a 5 year projections on company expansion or retraction. So, where have the brillant, highly paid executives of the Big Three Auto Makers been for the past 20 years? Asleep at the Wheel? (pun intended)
Let them file bankruptcy and start over as many other companies do each year. Maybe they will learn something.
I have let my opinion about the Big Three be known to my congressmen/women and senators. One responded in agreement. Please let your representation in Washington know how you feel about what they are doing with OUR money. If we don't take a hand in OUR government Obama and his motley crew will run rough shod over us all.

Don't Buy Foreign Products!
The only way to stop the far left liberals from making us dependent on foreign products is not to buy them just like people stopped buying as much gas for their cars when they spiked up the costs and were forced to bring them down. We don't need nationalized prisons and health care programs without oversight to ensure that those private corporations involved in the take over of free enterprise aren't sitting on the boards of directors or invested in their stocks such as the prison scandal recently and other private corporate scandals that have made some politicans quite wealthy who they helped with our tax dollars. Don't be fooled when the far left liberals say they want to help everyone because they're helping themselves and their friends and you'll be waiting in long lines for hours just to see a doctor at a clinic or signing up one year in advance for surgery. Don't let them nationalize anything, America!

Obama - More Government Intervention
You can call it whatever you want -- Nanny government, socialism, totalitarianism, fascism, big government, collectivism but when a government's ideology is to ask its citizens to "sacrifice for the common good" . . . "redistribute wealth to let those behind catch up" and propose giving tax credits to those who do not pay taxes, I call it SOCIALISM. Combine that with job-to-job unemployment insurance, a national health care system to cover everyone, closing loopholes for the wealthy and corporations, exempting more people at the lower income levels from all taxation, substituting more taxes on the rich in place of regressive sales taxes, to say nothing about cutting the military budget in half and transferring the savings to social programs. Perhaps, those cuts would be put to good use in Obama's re-education camps. Yes, I have heard President-elect Obama suggest all of the above. So others may call it what they like . . . I certainly know what I call it!

I agree--
with most of this article by Star. Unfortunately, many of these younger liberals that are out there and voted for BO will soon learn that with big government in control that abundance does not spread, but famine does.

judgment
This Nation is under divine judgment. This is the the first of several catastrophes headed our way.We have passed the point of no return.

David
Good solutions.

I would add one thing. Make ALL government posts volunteer positions or institute salary caps.

How much money would that save us taxpayers?

"There will be no election, no secret ballot. Just a couple of thugs shoving a card and a pen at you and telling you to sign."

Then, at your leisure, you drop a note to the NLRB RESCINDING YOUR SIGNATURE. Presto, chango, you've voted against unionization, and nobody knows about it. Why, it's like a "secret ballot" or something!

Given that you can rescind your signature in secret, exactly how does card check take away any of your rights? (No one ever answers that question, and I predict that no one will.)

Not much to be hopeful for........
in 2009......let the circus begin....It should be a year more entertaining than anything Hollywood could bring up on the tube.....after all, the "people" have spoken with their choice........lmao......lol...

Star, Good article.
I was lucky enough to have a professor in history who insisted we learn and understand what happened and why vs. who and when. His point was that if you didn't know what happened when something was done before, how would you know is was a mistake to try it again?

It is too bad that far more teachers didn't teach the same thing the same way. I was bored to tears in history classes where the teachers required you to memorize names and dates. They don't teach you a thing you can use later.

And, yes, I have a history book collection that most libararies can't duplicate.

Bob Munck
Have you ever tried to follow your advice? It is much harder than you think. And how do you know your act will actually be done?

It is MUCH easier to vote in secret in the first place.

Besides, at present, the unions approach a company and get the cards so they can speak to the people and let them present their union and its goals. As a result a lot of people will vote to allow them to make the presentation to see what they have to offer. The way they want to do it now would eliminate that and go with the initial cards. The 'voters' don't have the opportunity to actually see what the union offers them.

Greed is to blame
Sounds like you are letting your hurt emotions find something to blame on Obama already. The very thing you say is the down fall of US auto companies is how the Japanese auomakers beat them, centralized strategic planning. Bottom line $ per unit greed is why US companies have sunk. Bigger cars make more per unit, it wasn't some liberal conspiracy. Japanese out plan and out market most US companies. When you plan for the future then you will be part of the future. Stay with your short term gains and you eventually get left behind and eventually has now happened to the automakers just like tlevisions a generation ago.

"It is much harder than you think."

What's hard about sending a letter?

"And how do you know your act will actually be done?"

How do you know your secret ballot will be counted correctly? It's the same group doing the counting in each case.

"It is MUCH easier to vote in secret in the first place."

Walk through both procedures, showing how one is harder than the other.

"The 'voters' don't have the opportunity to actually see what the union offers them."

If that were true, why would they vote in favor? Something like 60% of the workers in the country would like to have a union if they could.

DO YOU BELIEVE…
Yes, the next four years will be a long troubling and for many agonizing four years to be sure. Why is it, that politicians' of all flavors seem to have trouble doing what is right? They seem to always choose the “wrong”, even when “right” is staring them in the face.

“We the People” must put a STOP to this madness:

1. STOP…Congress from serving more than two terms. Presidents are only allowed two terms why should Congress be any different.
2. STOP…Congress from voting for their own pay & benefits.
3. STOP…Paying for Congress’ high-priced insurance and other benefits.
4. STOP…Paying Congress’ full salary after serving just one term, or at retirement.
5. STOP…Congress from receiving life-time benefits; make them pay into Social Security like everyone else.
6. STOP…Congress from ignoring the will of the majority, over that of the special interests.
7. STOP…Giving out aid to illegal aliens.
8. STOP…Anyone from entering this country illegally.
9. STOP…Allowing babies born to illegal aliens in the USA automatic US Citizenship.
10. STOP…The abuses of the welfare system.
11. STOP…Fraud and identity theft. Cross check Social Security Numbers with finger-prints and use it for voter registration.
12. STOP…The “Bailing-Out” of banks and mortgage companies that gave loans to people who could not afford them. Or to any company that has made bad business decisions, including the Auto Industry.
13. STOP…Companies from giving CEOs and other executives outrageous salaries, bonuses and golden parachutes while the company goes “belly-up”, taking its workers pensions with it.
14. STOP…All unnecessary spending, especially “ear-marks”.
15. STOP…Permitting anyone from having a driver’s license with their face covered.

I could come up with some more, but you get the idea. These are common sense items that a free people should have demand long ago.

DO YOU BELIEVE…

Mr. “HOPE AND CHANGE”...

First, we should congratulate Obama for the greatest of victories. I hope and pray that he is able to keep this country together as “One Nation under God”.

He got his moneys worth from the Democrat Party Machine, ACORN, and all the other supporters of his campaign. Lies and deception won-out this time and once the truth is known President Obama will have a lot of explaining to do and will become history’s answer to; “WHY DID AMERICA IMPLODE ON ITS SELF”.

This election maybe a “first”, Obama will be this country’s first black president, but it certainly is not ground-shaking. It only confirms what many have known for years, the white-against-black racism is a relic of our past. And is only used by the race-baiters such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to extort money and favors for themselves; and to keep African-Americas dependent on the Democrats and Governments that will continue to “take from Peter and give it to Paul”, Paul will always vote for a Government that continues this policy.

Now…(I hope I am wrong)…Let the revolution begin with…”WE THE PEOPLE”, have decided that our founding fathers were wrong. Their principles, ideals and their American Dream flawed. “WE THE PEOPLE” have decided that the Socialist principles, ideals and the Marxist Dream are a much better way.

I find it unbelievable that America would elect an unknown far left Liberal/Socialist as President of these United States of America. What have we done? Do we realize that we just enabled a far left Liberal/Socialist agenda upon ourselves? Our forefathers must be turning over in their graves. Mr. “HOPE AND CHANGE” with a total lack of grit will, both at home and aboard; be tested early and often. What if he fails these tests? Then WHAT…? Can we afford his failures?

Well said. I used to work in an office with numerous people under 35 years of age. They are in for a rude and painful awakening. The lessons of Great Depression are going to be relearned all over again.

Hope He Changes
I hope he changes the things he said , but free health care for everyone, Look at The V.A.
Hospitals . The Gov. cannot even take care of the soldiers coming home today, much less yesterday. What about the ones of tommorow . Now they want to add 3 hundred million more, what a laugh . or LOL .

Star Parker: We fail To Learn...
Ms. Parker,

Good article with sound advice and information! I only hope that those workers and managers aren't so stubborn about the finances involved within the "Big Three" car compancies, that they end up not doing the right thing and cut their benefits in order to compete once again with Toyota/Honda...etal!! I'm sorry that the Big Three and the unions have dug themselves a big hole that nearly buried them and now want Big Government to dig them out...they'll have to make concessions or keep declining until all is lost to foreign car-makers!! With economics involved, it's always a tough call, but I lean to bankruptcy for them to re-do things...re-structure the mess and dig themselves out without gov't interference. They are big boys, they know what to do...or at least should!! They get the big bucks, let them do it. The tax payers are already too burdened!

Star writes......
"The failure of communism and socialism is not that far behind us. Yet Americans cannot seem to recall that it happened -- and why it happened.

What characterizes these systems? Government control. Central planning. And Godlessness."

The more Godless we become the more vulnerable we become to the wiles of satan. And that is just where the liberal left wants to abide. More than half of the voting population, on Novenber 4th, 2008, said yes; we prefer to serve satan; they cannot be more adament in their denial and bitterness toward what is really GOOD. Lucifer's lefties is their title.

Jesus already has won the WAR, but satan is winning many a battle for many perditioned souls.

America is suffering
America is suffering unlawful deception from the Alinsky group.
Group u$urp$ power on January 20th—the constitution violated.
The United States Supreme Court alone can relieve this outrage.
