Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

When successful companies fail, when winning teams start to lose, what we're most likely to hear is an announcement from the CEO or the coach about returning to basics.

It's not unusual for success to lead to a loss of focus that indeed there are basics from which it all started. In the language of proverbs, pride precedes the fall.

Undoubtedly, at a time like this, when markets are in chaos and everyone is worried, moralizing is likely to provoke rolling of eyes. But, I think this is exactly the time to think about basics and principles.

The operative question is: If there were a national consensus about the need to return to basics, would there be a consensus about what those basics are?

If we agree that the United States is a great nation, what made it, what makes it, great? Shouldn't this be the question we're asking? Shouldn't we be concerned that no one seems to be asking it? Either there are some fundamentals or it's all a massive stroke of blind luck.

One hundred years ago, government took 10 cents of every dollar. Today, it takes 35 cents of every dollar.

Now we no longer have just government programs. As those government programs fail, instead of getting to the root and getting rid of them, we're creating new government programs on top of them.

Instead of getting back to basics, we're getting farther and farther detached from reality.

I can't help but think of the joke about neurotics building castles in the sky and psychotics moving into them.

It's no joke that we've moved into castles we have built in the sky. Today, even though some of these castles are tumbling to solid ground, it does not seem to be waking up most.

For good reasons, the financial mess we're in is bringing back memories of the 1930s.

Let's recall that we responded to events back then with fundamental changes in how we viewed government. It became less what the founders of the nation intended it to be -- protector of individual life, liberty, and property -- and it became a tool for social policy.

One product was Social Security. This is one of the castles we have built in the sky.

Sure it may take years to build these castles, and then more to realize you're moving into them. But sooner or later, reality sets in.

As we try to stay afloat with the trillions of dollars of debt we now realize we've taken on as result of government housing programs, who is thinking about the $10 trillion unfunded liabilities of Social Security?

Or how about Medicare? Social Security came from the "New Deal." Medicare was a product of President Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society." The unfunded bills staring at us for Medicare piles about another $50-to-$60 trillion on top of the $10 trillion Social Security debt.

How about our fundamental moral collapse over these years? Today, with almost 40 percent of our babies born to unwed mothers, it won't be long before few Americans will even know what growing up in a traditional family means.

Returning to basics in America means remembering what private property, personal responsibility, and traditional values mean.

After the tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001, many got upset with a few evangelical preachers who suggested that the tragedy presented good reason for Americans to check themselves and the moral condition of our society.

America was built on basics. It's time to get back to them if our children and grandchildren are to enjoy what their parents and grandparents had.

Back To Basics
Star, Americans were willing to overlook the fact that politicians over the years, from both parties in some respects, were willing and able to blindly steel from them because financially things were "OK". Now that thier true colors are being exposed in waste, corruption, greed and turning away from the wisdom of God in favor of thier own desires, those other than the wealthy are truly hurting from this!! I hope they find no more places to hide-it is time they are all held accountable!!

LAURA BUSH: LADY LUCK OF REP. POLITICS
Laura Welch Bush, First Lady and wife of the 43rd President, a women who gave birth to twins in 1981 (when John McCain quit the Navy to prepare for his career in politics), spoke in the Twin Cities on day two of the Republican Convention which fell on the first Tuesday of the month. What most Americans don’t know about Laura is that she’s the 44th First Lady in U.S. history; and that 63 days from her convention speech, on the first Tuesday of November, when the nation picks the 44th President, she will be celebrating her 62nd birthday. Indeed, just as that day of decision and destiny falls on the First Lady’s birthday so did this occur twice before in her life. For whenever Laura’s birthday converged with a presidential election the nation went Republican putting Ike in the White House in 1952 and the Gipper in 1980.....

Back to Basics
A greater case of NOT going back to BASICS will be the elevation of a Marxist (Communist)to POTUS. I cannot imagine a greater case of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face in a year or more. Basics will be gone forever, then. Good article/advice, Star.

Ms Parker:
This was an great article until you started babbling about morals. It is too bad you found it necessary to mix solid reasoning with befuddled posturing. Truly, I expect better from you. Such nonsense is the stock-in-trade of dimwits like Adams, Grabar, Giles, and D'Souza. But, why would you stoop to such foolishness? How disappointing.

Death and Taxes
The United States is dying because of taxes. If the Creator of the universe only asks for 10%, why does our congress (the oppposite of progress!) demand 35? I know God is better at everything and can obviously feed the hungry and clothe the naked through US for only 10%, but our US Government can only make things worse with 35.

Buy One of McCain's Luxury Homes !!

While most Americans worry about their jobs and mortgages, the McCains worry about which of 8 luxury homes in 3 states to stay at tonight!!

Hey, you voters worried about the economic crisis, you may want to pool your money together, and bid on one of McCain's several homes!

His luxury home in Phoenix that he and Cindy lived in for 20 years and they sold in Dec. 2006 for $3.2 million is being auctioned off this month. It has 13 bedrooms, 14.5 bathrooms and a 7-car garage, and there is no minimim bid.

To learn more about it, see this story from Phoenix's ABC-TV station:

http://www.abc15.com/content/news/phoenixmetro/story.aspx?c ontent_id=36f5e357-dc1e-42a7-bc8b-415edf76b24a

McCain could care less about poor and middle income voters. That is evident from his policies and lifestyle.

McCain Victory Easily within Grasp
I’m an organizational psychologist and pollster. Notwithstanding what the MSM reports to demoralize and deactivate Republicans, I assure you that this is a VERY CLOSE race; it’s two points in either direction after adjusting for (1) the Bradley Effect and (2) and what is likely is exceptionally high McCain-Palin turnout based on fear and loathing of Obama’s radical socialist ideology, Chicago machine origins, terrorist connections and black separatist church roots. This second factor CANNOT be captured in the current sampling frames. Bottom line, if the McCain-Palin registered voters participate at a 75% level, the election is ours.
Stir the turnout motivation by speaking directly to everyone about how an Obama presidency would be a disaster for America through legislation, executive orders and judicial appointments:
X A massive tax increase on small business owners sucking the life out of an already weakened economy and sending us to the brink of a depression
X Increases in capital gains rates—another economy-killing measure
X An end to any reasonable prospects for offshore drilling for oil and gas to create energy independence
X Open borders, subsidized college tuition, social security and drivers’ licenses for illegal aliens
X Unfettered far left policy making power in the troika of Obama, Pelosi and Reid
X Reinstitution of affirmative action and racial quotas
X Increased federal funding for abortions
X Restriction of the Bill of Rights with union thug card-signing intimidation and imposition of the inappropriately labeled Fairness Doctrine
X A weakened defense and foreign policy , including derailing the Reagan Strategic Defense Initiative
X Appointments to the Supreme Court, Courts of Appeal and District Courts that distort the Constitution.

John of IL,
...I can't wait to get a Tony Rezko home and land purchase deal (wink/wink/nod/nod). George Obama might benefit from a nice hut upgrade if big bro Barack would lend a brother a hand.

History shows it...
History shows in every society that crumbling of empires came because they left certain basic values.

Washington only reflects American citizentry. When Washington goes, it is evidence of self examination of all Americans and what group ideology has changed.

Are we going to wink or examine.

Back to basics
Star is right on about what we need to do and what has caused US where we are today. Medicare and Medicaid are perfect examples of the failures of corrupted goverment to manage anything, no matter how noble the cause, and where obama's "health care" answer would lead US. The answer to health care, which is not a "right" as most socialist and obama, state, Is to get (before I go on, humbly I say, look for the obama campaign to add by words, copy, to their "basket of promises," they won't keep or will to their advantage and the detriment of US) the answer to health care is to eliminate non health medical procedures, abortions, viagra, etc., to give tax credits to physicians who will take on some unisured patients (without a lawyer attached to them), extend the life protection of the patten of a medicine if the pharmaceutical company agrees to start out with a lower price since it will have the exclusive on the drugs for longer time, lower the exposure of health care plans as commodities, genuine health care should not be for so much property as for management..

William Kristol: "Fire The Campaign"

Another leading conservative talks about McCain's near-dead campaign.

William Kristol, a conservative writer, says in today's New York Times that McCain should "fire the campaign."

Read it at:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/13/opinion/13kristol.html?re f=opinion

McCain is a L-O-S-E-R.

When in doubt, blame everyone
Meanwhile, some very competent people have been assembled to deal with our current problems. The world has become very complex in a way that can not be solved by only fasting and praying. Pray that our leaders will be guided by basic principles but also knowledge to operate complex mechanisms necessitated by modern technology and conflicting populations.

Back to basics ll
there have been many incredible additions to health care from the private sectors and they need to be rewarded, tax (I hate taxes but when they apply they apply)ttax all the industries such as gambling, all "sex" industries that contribute to bad health through deseases, mental illnesses, additions, etc, all ciitizens need to pay for health care and/or have a tax free acct to save for it, increase the reward for good doctors, nurses and all in the medical field....But it all goes back to the basics that Star writes about, most importantly, the value of INTEGRITY,in Washington where using "compassion" as an excuse, it has been thrown aside, in mainstreet where all kinds of excuses are used to ignore it, in all businesses (specially Wall Street) and in our courts where the business of making money through creating work is in full use ! That basic Value of Integrity needs to come back and obama has proven with his exposed past and the way he has run his campaign, that he is not an agent of Integrity !Instead he is an agent of the opposite !

Back to Basics lll
Let me just add that I do not believe in big goverment or goverment answering all our problems, there is a difference where goverment controls, dictates and corrupts, like obama has in mind but won't tell the truth about it (not surprsingly so, his business as usual !) and where govt, without taking $$ at gun point and for wealth redistribution (obama's, "American dream stops at $250k now that he has made his millions under the Bush tax rates, obama's "fairness, wealth redistribution act") there is a difference between that "using the goverment to rape the peoples' earnings and common sense cooperation, using the govt as another party involved in the working process of solutions for working and responsible Americans(obama's people will steal these words) but it all depends on those bsic values Star talked about and on none more than INTEGRITY, which many do not even know what it means....then we wonder why we have an economic "crisis" !!!

Socialism leads to pigdom.
It's time to stop the hand-outs. Socialism is not charity. Government taxes are not the churches collection basket for the poor. Socialism turns perfectly good human beings into pigs. Socialism is the antithesis of LIBERTY, Life and the pursuit of happiness.

rdk:
Your assessment of the competence of the those in charge could not be more wrong. Technology does not change human nature. Americans do not need leaders. Americans need the power of self-determination.

Palin Lying About TrooperGate Report

It would be nice if the McCain-Palin Campaign started telling the TRUTH for once.

Based on Palin's weekend responses on the TrooperGate report, the Campaign is still focused on telling many lies.

The leading media say Palin is still lying about the TrooperGate findings and her guilt. See these stories:

ABC News, “Palin Makes Troopergate Assertions that Are Flatly False”
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/10/palin-makes -tro.html

The Atlantic, “The Odd Lies of Sarah Palin,”

NO CREDIBILITY

.....JOHN IL ...

.....Anyone stupid enough to be represented by B. Huessin Obama and "Little Dick" Durbin is too stupid to post on this site .....COLOSSUS

Go away.
It's this simple, you have no credibility. You need to publish on a website that fits the way you REALLY think, and it isn't conservative.

John
The Troopergate Report claims that Gov. Palin abused her power. Yet it also says the disputed dismissal was "legal and proper." Am I the only one who sees an inconsistency here?

John #8 & 18:You don't read well, do you

It's either that you can't read and comprehend very well, or you just read the leftist sites!

Or, perhaps BOTH!

But then, one doesn't need to be able to read and comprehend, much less have any analytical or critical thinking skills when one reads those leftist sites...

No wonder you simply parrot such one sided and INACCURATE drivel! lol

odd column
Parker thinks that the fact that we are now worried we might have a repeat of the economics conditions of the thirties, that that is a reason for returning to the policies that produced the economic crisis of the '30s. That is a very strange argument. One would think a more natural argument would be that we should learn from what happened in the period leading up to the '30s not that we should emualte it.

John
you are an idiot. I assume you did not vote for John Kerry or Al Gore because they are wealthy. And Obama is worth several million as well - so who will you vote for this year?

What I find funny is that Obama gave pretty much nothing to charity while John McCain gave so much. But I guess the way to show you care is to confiscate and redistribute other peoples money while hoarding your own.

It is not the President's job to "care." Politicians need to go back to governing by the Constitution -- that would be the fastest way out of most of our troubles.

Simplest Basic
If someone can't afford to pay you back you do not give him a loan. Even if the government is shoving the order down your throat.

Let's go back to common sense. Such as

Tax increases hinder the growth of an economy.

Redistributing income creates a lazy permanent underclass. And destroys the charitable spirit of those that have money at the moment.

The responsibility of the poor leaves the people and is usurped by a government trying to buy votes.

In other words socialism comes from an evil worldview and has evil consequences. Even though it sounds nice.

John
Why do you care about 2 incompetent wife-beaters. THis is why you will vote for Obama. Because 2 incompetent wife-beaters got fired.

Let's go back in time to Bill's troopergate, using tax dollars for sexual liasons. Your a hypocrite.

Are you an incompetent wife-beater. Is there an incompetent wife beater and cheater club?

Obama will destoy our chances
It is obviously Obama's plan to further the destruction of our economy.

I have to believe this is on purpose.

Facts are facts.

Under Obama we will not drill for oil here or be allowed to build Nuclear Plants. He will not allow an increase in the number of refineries or update with new technology the 30 year old refineries currently here in the United States.
He is using class warfare to be elected and promises to tax those dirty rotten people that make more than 250,000 dollars a year.

By raising any taxes jobs will be lost.

He believes the redistribution of income is fair.

Social Security will not be dealt with and will cause further collapse.

Conservatives and Republicans
We need a 100% turnout. They are trying to dishearten us so we do not turn out to vote. We will win if we all go vote.

Thank you Star Parker.
Thanks again! As a relatively new fan of yours, I look forward to your common sense opinions. I would look forward to reading your views on Back to Basics for the Home and Family. For some of us it's an integral way of life, for the others (unfortunately it appears they are a majority) it would be an elementary level lesson never before expressed to them because they bot into, were taught, or were raised with their hands out, without a sense of responsibility. Goes hand in hand with the mentality in current government and businesses at all levels with rare exception.

Dr Chaz: Very well layed out. How I wish your post could be presented in the media and heard loud and clear without the smirking overspeak we are currently subjected to. Sigh.

More politics of envy
I see the O-bots have returned to the McCain has lots of homes you should be jealous meme.

I think the fundamental difference between a conservative and a liberal is conservatives don't begrudge anyone else their success.

I struggled with this myself for a while with my older sister, I would look at the things she and her husband had obtained and felt like I was a failure. It took me a long time to finally realize that her success did not diminish me. Her success did not prevent me from achieving my own success, and my success did not have to be measured by the same terms as her success.

Stop whining about the success of those around you and focus that energy on creating your own success.

reply to Star Parker
What an excellent article!!!! Please keep on this theme. Everyone needs to hear it!

Too Late To Go Back Now!
It's too late for America to go back to basics now, because we must go forward and deal with the mess that either was premeditated or just a fluke or a bunch of negligent acts which we'll never know but must fix quickly so that we avoid those biting at the reigns - anti-American leaders who are thrilled at the American economic crisis - and can't wait to get their grubby little hands on all of our bank accounts and create a one world bank under the 10 or it it 7 or 3 who are waiting for their crowns! Well, anyway, the number doesn't matter right now - Let's go forward and DRILL FOR OIL and protect our freedoms, sovereignty and throw out NAFTA, outsourcing of jobs, and stimulate America's economy.

The ORIGINAL US Government
Do you know what the original government of the U.S. was?

It consisted of the Department of State, the Department of War (not defense), and the Department of Treasury to pay the costs of the other two.

The Department of State was meant to deal with other governments to get them to leave us alone. The Department of War was to deal with them if they didn't leave us alone.

Everything else has been added since then.

I think we should go back to the Basics.

OBAMA ALL PUFF AND FLUFF

.....OBAMA'S flowery speeches are a combo of buzz words and populist psychobabble ...He is the King of Fools preaching to an audience of fools ...

.....His promises to eliminate Capitol Gains taxes on small businesses that invest in themselves tells me that he does not even know what Capital Gain income is ...

....He says nothing but he sure makes it sound good ...God must love fools because he made so many of them .....COLOSSUS

Trickle Up theory is not back to basics!
The “Trickle Up” Theory

For the past 75 years or so the federal government has been increasingly aggressive in claiming it has the inalienable right, or ‘god’ like duty, to ‘create’ jobs and improve the economy. The Democrats and some Republicans want the majority of us to believe that the government provides the money that “trickles up” to create jobs and improve our economy. The truth is the government can neither create the capital needed (create wealth) to start a business nor guarantee its survival.

The simplest way to understand what it takes to create a job is to divide the assets of a business by the number of people employed. A business with $2,000,000 of assets that employs 50 people knows it takes $40,000 to create a job. A business with $50,000 in assets that employs 2 people knows it takes $25,000 to create a job. The birth of the business requires an investment, then it requires an income to survive, to grow and pay employees, and neither the birth nor the survival of a business is ever guaranteed.

All government revenue i.e. taxes, must be siphoned from earned income; it cannot tax unearned income because there is no such thing as unearned wealth. Governments only source of money is from taxes. When it taxes citizens it decreases investment income, and when it taxes businesses’ it disables their survival. When government sucks money from the earned and gives it to the unearned (income redistribution) it starves and weakens our economy. Tragically, the more people that become dependent on government to take care of them (the Katrina Syndrome) the fewer people there are who will take the risk to invest and grow a business. In fact a business has no social value if it doesn’t survive, and the more socially oriented it becomes the more likely it will fail.

The “trickle up” plan will become a law, not a theory when water starts to flow up hill.

Dean Poppe

Insighting Truth
First off, insight is a noun, insighting is not a word. But, assuming you have a inner knowledge of truth like your name applies, why does talking about morals strike such a sour note? Truth is from God. The same God that Giles, Adams and D'Souza write about. You may think it's foolishness but here is what God says about their foolishness in 1Cor 1:21--For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
Pray you find the real truth: Jesus!

Neverland
And if we go to the third star on the right, we might get back to basics. Neither political party has any motivation to "return to basics". We can wish and wish, but it will never happen.

Both candidates voted for the bailout. Neither candidate has made any plans to reduce government interference in the market, or much of anywhere else. McCain's plans are slightly less intrusive than Nobama's but the best we can hope for is a conservative judical pick.

I'm in California, so my vote for Potus doesn't really matter. Maybe we can give Bob Barr a boost.

insighting truth
It is a fool's errand to think that a return to basic American principles can occur without a simultaneous accompaniment of Judeo-Christian ethics. Question: Why is it necessary for Marxists, socialists, and communists to eradicate religion? Not because they are apologists for atheism. It is because they know that the free market is founded upon a belief in The God of the Bible. I can't go into the explanation here. And don't take my word for it. Read Hobbes and Locke et al.

Let's get rid of Social Security now
Let's get rid of Social Security now before it gets so out of hand that we become powerless to do anything later. We don't need Social Security. It's just another way to buy votes for the Democrats. The elderly shouldn't have to pay any taxes instead of recieving Social Security. That should be close to even. We are just going to have to work until we are dead. Social Security was a stupid idea and became stupider over the years as the Democratic Party got its hands on the money. What a bunch of maroons.

Raila Odinga and Obama and the media
Has anyone else read about Obamas involvement in Kenya and Raila Odinga the corrupt man responsible for the chaos and butchering of a once peaceful nation. A nation that is now being held hostage by his violence until they put him into the office of president. He lost the election and through extreme violence and persecution is forcing his way in. He is an Islamist and a Communist. This man claims to be Obamas cousin and Obama was there helping this disgusting man with his campaign. Obama grows more and more corrupt as more and more information leaks out about him. What is wrong with our media? Who owns our media? Let's get back to the basics of a media that gets the truth out no matter what.

Basics..
The basics you seek lie in the wisdom of the ancients...the US Constitution and the Holy Bible. Your column is remarkable in that you mention neither in a discussion of "basics".

As we wander further and further from the teachings of these documents, we get closer and closer to the abyss.

star parker
Star is spot on with her analysis......

and sorry folks she did not choose to mention the Constitution or the Bible as she would be denigrated either way. (And she is not shy of either subjects but her columns are fundamentally geared to rational thinking persons in a secular forum.)

this county is going the wrong way and one has to be an idiot or insane not to realize this.
