Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In almost poetic lockstep, Republican and Democratic caucus voters in Iowa rejected the political establishment. In picking Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama, they selected candidates who, at this time last year, conventional wisdom would have deemed inconceivable.

Beyond this common denominator, and equally fascinating, is the fact that these two candidates and two political stories are mirror images of each other. Huckabee a traditional values conservative and Obama a boiler plate liberal. And, of the leading candidates in Iowa, Huckabee spending the least money and Obama the most.

To the extent that these caucus outcomes point to the themes that will define this upcoming election, and I believe they do, we can expect a national referendum about what America is about today.

Regarding Obama, this is, of course, a great and moving story. The historic significance cannot be lost. Iowa Democrats, in a state whose population is perhaps 2 percent black, decisively picked a black man to be their candidate for president of the United States.

For anyone who follows public opinion polls, it's not news that race is no longer a factor of significance in American political choices. But to see this translate into hard reality is something else and sends a very important message to blacks and all Americans about what a great country this is.

But in understanding the Obama candidacy, we must go beyond recognizing that this is not about race. It is about who Obama is, and this is the story that will play out in this election.

Obama not only obliterates the lines on race, but he also obliterates the lines on everything else. The end of the racial line is a great achievement. But the other points of demarcation we do need.

I am talking about the lines that define right and wrong in the sense of our religious traditions. The lines that define family and establish the standard by which we measure its health and breakdown. The lines that we have used in the past to instruct our children about how to manage and direct their sexual impulses.

I am also talking about the lines in our nation's Constitution that draw a boundary where the federal government belongs and does not belong. And the lines that define property and ownership that go beyond our Constitution and reach to our ancient truths and traditions (Thou Shalt Not Steal).

The lines from our traditions that provide crucial direction for managing our own selves (Thou Shalt Not Covet) and the crucial line that defines the very beginning of life.

Unfortunately, these are lines that liberals, and Sen. Obama is certainly one, no longer see as relevant. If getting rid of these lines is what he and his enthusiasts mean by change, we'll have a chance to see what our nation at large thinks about this.

Everything that Sen. Obama is not, Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, is.

The story in Iowa was the large and enthusiastic turnout of evangelical Christians and their unequivocal support of him.

Huckabee's trouncing of Mitt Romney, despite being outspent by a factor something like 15 to 1, is a great political story. It has turned doubters into believers and it's now appreciated that he is a real and viable national candidate. The "Huckaboom" has been evident in that he has soared in national polling along with his emergence in Iowa.

I found it particularly rewarding that Huckabee even finished first among Iowa Republicans who said that their number one issue was terrorism.

Clearly the man is touching Americans. The plethora of televised national debates played a critical role, making it possible to get to know him without his having to have tens of millions on hand to spend on ads.

The road out of Iowa is, of course, long and many chapters remain after this first one.

There's a lot of talk about an independent run -- possibly Michael Bloomberg.

To the extent history tells us anything, third party candidates only serve to be spoilers. But I don't think this is what this about anyway.

I don't believe Americans today are looking for political technicians. I think they want to reach down, rediscover, and re-embrace the principles that have made this such a great nation.

I see a hint of prevailing sentiment in a Gallup poll of last week asking voters how important a consideration "family values" will be in their selection of a candidate. Seventy five percent replied either "extremely important" or "very important."

Huckabee and Obama are studies in contrasts that draw a line that will define this election. Stay tuned.

Choose your crook??
Nice choice. America loses either way. Judicial Watch, a non profit, non partisan lists top 10 crooked politicians. Four are running for POTUS. Obama and Huckabee made the list as do Hillary (#1-no surprise) and Rudy.

http://www.judicialwatch.org/judicial-watch-announces-list- washington-s-ten-most-wanted-corrupt-politicians-2007

For those who Defend the Huckster for destroying public property containing social security numbers, etc. bear in mind that this is not a practice in any other state for an outgoing gov. to destroy public records (ie. emails, etc.) that could prove corruption or disprove it.

A choice between Obama & Huckabee?
That choice would result in us getting a better President than if the choice was between Clinton & Giuliani like the MSM was 'predicting' before anybody even cast a vote. I'd really prefer to get somebody sensible like Ron Paul as President but voters seem to prefer to elect big spenders over someone who would make an effort to be more economical. I don't see the point in boasting about having a theology degree if he didn't have one. Maybe if he were running for our preacher instead of President it might be relevant. What use is a theology degree as a qualification for a President? Is it a character flaw to lie about having a theology degree (or any degree for that matter) when campaigning for President?

Huckabee vs Obama
I find so-called Black conservatives to be a curious breed. To come to a self-definition of being Black represents more than just having some tinge in one's skin. Rather, its having that tinge plus a knowledge and appreciation of the historical and current experience Black people have faced in a racist society. Consequently, his position on the issues would reflect this.

Obama's background is totally opposite of virtually all Black men in this society and as such, he is one who has only just the tinge in his skin.Consequently, I don't refer to him as a Black man. A Black man in the true sense of the definition would never get the majority of white votes in any type of an election.

I firmly agree with MLNicosia, I live in a border state and have knowledge of the mex. consulates and their missions. I am a Duncan Hunter supporter because he is also from a border state and fully understands the illegal alien problem. As far as religious beliefs go, I don't care if someone believes in a toe nail as long as they follow the constitution of the US and enforce the laws that are on the books. I can't believe anything the huckster says. And yes, I sit to right of Rurik the Viking and Attila the hun. Shillery or Obama, no way--.

Huckabee vs. Obama
Translation:
-Tax and spend liberal (in sheep's clothing) vs. Tax and spend liberal.
-Willing to create a vacuum in Iraq by immediately withdrawing troops vs. Willing to create a vacuum in Iraq by immediately withdrawing troops.
-Willing to say and promise anything to get people to vote for them vs. Willing to say and promise anything to get people to vote for them.
-Inexperienced, economic novice vs. Incredibly Inexperienced, economic novice.

Bottom Line take on these two choices:
The American people will get EXACTLY what they deserve if either one of them becomes president: A president who will do whatever he is told to do by those who care for nothing more than their own reputations, furthering their own political agenda's, and lining their pockets; it's always been about money and power: Those who have the money have the power!

Why the pessimistic vision of the future? The Psalmist says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." That statement also implies the opposite is true! Open your eyes Americans! If you think you have been to hell and back with President Bush, that's just the tip of the iceberg! It WILL get worse before it gets better!

My advice: Be Prepared! We have less than one year to get a year's supply of food, etc. and get out of debt because "foreclosure" is eminent.

"Frankly, your black separatist"

Oh brother, LOl.. What have I said that promotes black separatism???

"anti-West, pro-Muslim rants"

Wow!! Laying clear and indisputable facts on the table is being anti-West. Also what have I said that's pro-Muslim?

"and associated slant on history - carry no weight with me"

I didn’t slant anything, I just stated basic facts that a 3rd grader can look up in a history book. Have you read one lately?

"Islam is mankind's biggest ever cancer and eventually WILL be eliminated as the useless belief system it is, completely incompatible with a modern rational world."

Well, well, well, aren't you the little Necon Nazi. Anyway, you have no proof to support such a sweeping generalization of a religion like that. Everything Muslims have done, CHRISTIANS have done at some point in history. And I don't think Jesus would be condemning a religion like that with such harsh rhetoric. Please, repent!!!

Ms. Parker is off the mark here a little
It seem that everybody istalking about change these days, as Sen. Obama has thrust the concept into the light of the campaign. The problem is not only change from what and to what, but to actually make it happen. It is here that Ms. Parker and many others lose their way.

There cannot be change if we do the same thing once again and vote the lesser of two evils. The two parties are so invested in seeking power that partisanship has now replaced leadership in Washington. To beleive that electing another elite from either party will bring about a different result is insane (see Einstein).

Also, Ms. Parker misses the point of third parties. In the partisan atmosphere of Washington, the best thing that could happen would be to elect an independent President with no loyalties to either party. In such a case, the constant pull of the party on the President would be non-existent.

Please take a few minutes to visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT. ORG, where I have explained in much more detail how the elites have accrued so much power to the two parties and the effect that it has been having on our policies and legislation. Thanks, Joe

"We had a budget surplus at the end of the Clinton Administration. When was the last time we could say that about a Republican executive office?"

There was never an actual surplus. The national debt increased each year under Clinton. The surplus referred to by democrats assumes interest payments aren't included. He came very close to having a surplus towards the end of his presidency, but the interest owed on the debt we have outstanding was just enough so that our debt never actually decreased under his administration.

Furthermore, the increase in tax revenues that gave us the "surplus" was because there were a ton of taxes being paid on gains from speculation and from revenues derived from debt spending or taht didn't occur (et al, Enron). Look up the rate personal debt increased under the Clinton administration and you'll see that in the 90s we simply traded public debt for consumer debt.

Just so you don't think I'm blindly following republicans, consider this my disclaimer: We haven't had a decent president since the Depression.

Really, Islam isn't the problem. These terrorist are just evil, stupid, SOBs. Thats why every Muslim country in the world bans them and tries to kill them. Read the Looming Tower by L. Wright, it's very insightful.

"There are NO Constitutional Rights to be immoral, despite what the Democrats might think."

There are no Constitutional rights period. America was founded on the principle that rights are natural. The Bill of Rights simply reaffirms rights that are considered to naturally exist.

As for the moral authority debate, the first fault of it is separting it from economic freedom. Economic freedom and social freedom should not be split, they should be considered the same, under the category "freedom." Under "freedom" volutary transcations (economic or social) are allowed. The public can only set rules pertaining to involutary transactions and actions that take place in public when a free society exists. Even those actions in public places that are regulated in a free society must not allow exceptions (i.e. can't talk about abortion in public unless you're pro-life, or, can't talk about abortion in public unless you're pro-choice).

Obama bests Huckabee Hands down
in foreign policy knowledge. When Bhutto was assassinated Huck falsely claimed Muslims were the 2nd biggest illegal immigrants population coming into the US. Huck will try his hardest to scare his base into voting for him. sort of the better red than dead moronic philosophy.

Frankly, your black separatist, anti-West, pro-Muslim rants - and associated slant on history - carry no weight with me. Islam is mankind's biggest ever cancer and eventually WILL be eliminated as the useless belief system it is, completely incompatible with a modern rational world.

Re: Only after the fat lady sings
"The Nazis successfully invaded, and controlled large parts of Europe through military conquest during World War 2, did this give them moral authority?"

As I recall, before WWII was finished, Germany itself was invaded and conquered, and the "winners", the Allies, established the "moral authority" at Nuremberg.

Would You Support a Known Liar?
Mike Huckabee has a theology degree?

“I think I’m stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism,” Huckabee told the Christian Broadcasting Network. “These are people that want to kill us. It’s a theocratic war. And I don’t know if anybody fully understands that. I’m the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well.”

But as it turns out ,the theology-degree claim is false.

Re: Hysterical Historians
"Democrats see that 'controlling sexual impulses' is very much in the arena of where government does NOT belong. But of course, conservatives gleefully want to get government involved in people's most intimate lives."

So much for rules against rape, incest, and beastiality!

Since the Federal Court unconstitutionally tookover the power to regulate the morality of the community from local government, the Federals have set a "one size fits all" standard of immorality throughout the country.

There are NO Constitutional Rights to be immoral, despite what the Democrats might think. Of course, they always seem to confuse "license" with "libery". Since our founding in 1776, the local community has historically set its own standards of acceptable behavior and the Federal government didn't interfer. That is what was meant by the term "Banned in Boston". Now the Supreme Court sets a "National Standard" that is substantially lower than most communities would allow and the results are pretty obvious as are culture self-destructs.

"Moral Authority is claimed by the winners"

The Nazis successfully invaded, and controlled large parts of Europe through military conquest during World War 2, did this give them moral authority?

Jerabaub
They'll run on change - but the real issue will become whether or not they can in fact find an avenue for change that anyone will support. I'm one who happens to believe that this is an interim stage, rather than a defining one. Americans have had quite a run since the end of WWII. Now, we find ourselves trying to spend 20 cents on each tax dollar for defense, and 10 cents for the $250 billion interest payment we're now making on that $9.7 trillion in debt we've wracked up since the early 80's. Yet, we have a public that is increasingly pushing congress into the same types of social programs that we see in Europe - and those countries, at best, are only spending 10 cents or so for debt service and defense for each tax dollar. Recently, there were several polls taken and 65% of Americans said they'd like to see a government insued health program for everyone. And, it also demonstrated that by the same count, peope do not want Social Security touched. And, as Reagan found out, you can cut taxes, but you cannot cut spending. As things are, we continue to run large deficits which undermine the dollar. Combine that with the aging of the boomers, the fact that the cost of existing entitlements (SS, Medicare, Medicaid, Drug)are now going to increase every year for several decades, and it seems that the politics of hope must give way to the politics of choice. We cannot pay for what we have today - so what makes us believe we can pay for all of this tomorrow? It's a clear and defining conflict - and given the promises those wanting to get electd today are making - it seems almost certain that the public is not ready to make the choices required to find whatever balance we must achieve.

Without raising taxes, deficits will increase, as will interest payments on those deficits, which will drive them even higher given such payments erode the tax base.

What "sixties garbage" are you referring to holy one? Plenty of significant things happened in the sixties for the benefit of many people. So I’m curious to what part of the "sixties" you say is “garbage”.

"shysters, politicians instead of statesmen as long as we refuse to honor God as we did as a people in the past."

What people? What past???

"That's what this battle is about, I've had enough of 60's morals"

What battle???? What sixties morals??? Your code phrases are cute.

HAPPILY, ALSO FOR LIFE AND LIBERTY....
AND MIKE HUCKABEE, whom Democrats,Liberals, Conservatives, saints and sinners UNDERSTAND...and connect with enough to elect him in 2008. A talking suit, a proponent of hope magic, he's not. His parents gave him his future, and he's grateful. I like the appreciation he demonstrates....

MIke is a man with problems and solutions, accomplishments and an actual family with problems (and inclusive love) and forgiveness...well that's Mike's family, like any good family. You love 'em and you don't leave 'em like they don't count...no matter what the condition of family members.

Mike has demonstrated making unity in "the essentials" work for Americans, while we exercise diversity in things the government should not be doing for us!

Mountain Rose
I realize that most of us are two bad breaks away from being in dire straits: spouse A loses job, spouse B develops long term illness. But most of us don't expect the government to bail us out when such things happen. Most of us also have a network of family, friends, church, etc. who will see us through such times. Most of us have the good sense to downsize, move out of the McMansion into an apartment, trade in the Cadillac for a Geo, etc., before we find ourselves on the street.

Any liberal who actually believes that government will bail him out needs to replay the tapes of New Orleans after Rita. That is what you get when you expect government to cover your backside.

But the poor stay poor by buying their groceries at 7-11, spending the rent on lottery tickets, eating most meals at McDonalds or the allyoucaneat buffet, buying big TV's with the electric bill money, buying a new car instead of health insurance, taking out a cash loan against the title to the car, buying a house that costs nine times their annual income with an ARM, skipping class to go to the game or play video games. This is a behavioral disorder.

Prolife/Security ticket
If republicans want to keep the whitehouse our ticket should have people who are strong on these two issues. Why? The difference between these two parties is a culture of life and foreign policy (given our list of candidates and Bush's spending - we have lost credibility on less government, immigration and electing qualified judges i.e. Miers Mess. ). However, we can still be the party of a culture of life and an offensive approach of defense. If we nominate Mitt the waffler on life and he picks another waffler or person weak on defense. It means we will have a candidate whose credentials and strongest argument are fixing the economic issues that impact average america - and Mitt can not overcome the authenticity of Obama or Hillary on this issue. Obama is truly an average american and the 18-40 age group will make a big difference in this election - and we can easily stay home on principle or vote Obama just for the heck of it!

Galltegfa- Lefties redefining welfare
At the time the Constitution was written, welfare did not have the same connotation it does today.

When the Preamble to the Constitution said "...provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare..." they were not speaking of taking money out of one person's pocket and putting it in another's.

Instead, they were speaking of the government's obligation to have in interest in the general wellbeing of the population.

While I don't agree that every person who finds himself down on his luck is due to character defects (though your statement is generally true), it still does not mean that charity is the duty of the government.

I think that charity is the perogative of the churches and private orgainzations, who can work with people as individuals and help them learn how to pull themselves out of their pathetic state. When the government treats people like numbers, they can live for generations under the raidar without ever having to reform their lifestyles.

Compassionate Conservatism Continued
If we elect a Leftie, or a "Compassionate Conservative," beware, because Socialized Medicine is likely to follow.

The Lefties have stepped up their misinformation campaign, trying to hoodwink the American people into thinking that Universal Healthcare is the way to go.

I have just written an article in my blog on this subject called "The Tragic Case of Nataline Sarkisyan." She is the young woman who died in a Los Angeles area hospital recently amidst a swirl of controversy.

Almost immediately, the family had a high profile ambulance chasing attorney, Mark Garagos, and shortly thereafter, Michael Moore started speaking out against her insurance company, making it look like the entire healthcare system had to be overhauled.

The case is very complicated, but the news media has been manipulated to make it look as if the insurance company was heartless in refusing a questionable treatment.

I predicted that the Lefties would be using her case to promote Socialized Medicine, and sure enough, there was her family this week, posing with John Edwards, who made his fortune suing doctors.

This is the reason that I fear having a man who is over desirous of appearing compassionate running the White House. He must always be making decisions regarding what is good for the country as a whole, and not just think about the individual case at hand.

We've spent something on the order of SIX TRILLION dollars trying to eliminate poverty, yet still it persists. Poverty is a behavioral disorder. The poor make bad choices which make and keep them poor. The government cannot spend us out of poverty. The government needs to get out of the way so the poor can start making the right choices. I think the FairTax would be a good starting place.

Mitt vs Mike
Did anyone watch Sunday's forum besides me?

Mitt and Mike were the obvious best candidates.

Mitt is good at talking to conservatives.

Mike is great at connecting with the average voter and making conservatism sound good.

Mike won every voter demographic in Iowa except voters who made over $100,000 (Mitt's only win).

So do Republicans want to win in November 08 and beat Obama or do they want an elitist Rich Republican come-lately named Mitt???

I want to win and Mike is a winner and connects with the average voter and he is just as conservative as Ronald Reagan.

Remember Reagan signed an Amnesty bill and appointed Sandra D. O'connor to the Supreme Court. Mike will not make either of these mistakes.

None of these candidates are perfect, but I predict the Mike Huckabee will be the next great Republican communicator who will win in November 2008 (and he is not my first choice either, I like Duncan Hunter on his record).

animalgirl
Please enlighten us with the passages in the Constitution where the Federal Government is made responsible for "building an efficient, reasonable and economy-oiling healthcare system and alleviating poverty."

My read of the constitution limits the powers of government to staying out of the way of such things. It is my observation that any undertaking the government gets involved with becomes horribly inefficient and ineffective.

The true role of the government is to protect the citizens from aggression and fraud. That means the military and the judiciary. The rest is self-serving bureaucracy that consumes as much as 80 percent of allocated funds before servicing the intended party. Imagine a healthcare system where 80 percent of allocated funds feed the bureaucracy - this is what you are advocating.

animal girl
I will agree to people doing what ever they want in the privacy of their bedrooms, if you Lefties will extend that courtesy to permitting people to use what every lightbulbs they want in there, and to letting people use whatever kind of toilet they want in their bathrooms.

Beware of "Compassionate Conservatism"
Governor Huckabee, in his compassionate release of a plethoria of criminals, showed a lack of compassion for their subsequent victims.

The thought of a "Compassionate" Republican in the White House really scares me in this transitional time, when Left and Right are battling for the soul and character of America.

Star
Does not see the contradiction in her own column.

She wants to recognize the clear line from the Constitution as to were government belongs and where it doesn't.

Democrats see that 'controlling sexual impulses' is very much in the arena of where government does NOT belong. But of course, conservatives gleefully want to get government involved in people's most intimate lives.

Democrats see that our government does NOT belong in Iraq, or other sovereign countries that do not pose an imminent threat to the U.S. Neocons think we should be nation-building all over the world.

Government DOES belong in controlling crime and providing for the general welfare, as per the Constitution. This includes building an efficient, reasonable, and economy-oiling healthcare system and alleviating poverty. Conservatives are constantly pushing government where it doesn't belong, but want to limit it where it very much does.

redlac
"No one knows if there is much difference between a liberal and a compassionate conservative - given what we've seen over the last 7 years...".

Obviously there is no substantial difference.

I think what Huckabee, Obama and even McCain all have in common is a departure from the status- quo, from the inevitability of the Clinton machine dictating whom the democrat nominee will be, to the rejection of those who would presume to be heirs to the Bush legacy especially on foreign affairs. McCain does endorse the "surge", but he has been a stalwart critic of Bush(and especially Rumsfeld)on how the war was managed, or mismanaged, for years.

"Change" is what people want, which explains why Huckabee emerged in Iowa, despite spending 1/15th what Romney spent, and why Obama won in Iowa, despite the Clinton juggernaut.

People need to "flesh out" the specific policies of both Obama and Huckabee, but I think any candidate who seeks a continuation of current policies will lose.

However, we must bear in mind that "all progress is change, but not all change is progress".

RATS not RINO's are GOP Problem
Huckabee is the new choice to expand the GOP and reach out beyond those already enrolled. He is not a RINO, (Republican In Name Only) but a real Reagan Republican, and similar to Reagan in the sense that the establishment GOP was originally against him and they always said that Reagan raise taxes in his state.

The problem is not the RINO's but the RATS. These are Republicans Against ThemSelves. They would rather lose with Romney or McCain than support a winner like Huckabee who appeals to new voters and draws back in the Reagan Democrats.

Experience and Fiscal Responsibility
If experience were what people voted for, Lincoln who had been a congressman for only two years - would never have been elected. Similarly, Nixon would've beat Kennedy, and Bush Sr. would have beat Clinton. Ike, of course, had never been in office or run a business, and Harding had more experience playing cards, than running a government.

Obama appears to be pulling away from Clinton in NH, indicating the Democrats never had as much interest in Clinton as the press thought. They just responded when the press acted as if she was the nominee and the only possible candidate. Huckabee does not appear to be catching on as much in New Hampshire - so he'll have to wait for South Carolina to continue his surge.

In the end, a lot of Americans will vote for form - not necessasily substance. Most will not know what these candidates will do until after they're elected, and no one knows if there is much difference between a liberal and a compassionate conservative - given what we've seen over the last 7 years. How, after all, can anyone explain the $4 trillion in debt we've added in that period of time - other than to recognize that the next president is not likely to run up such debts - even if they are a democrat.

Tea Party
If your last sentence is true, then why does it matter who is president or why even vote?

those of us who are longing for a return to sanity and respect, and those who have ingested
the sixties garbage.
I'm an evangelical Christian but I'm leery of Huckabee, there's just something there that makes me very uncomfortable. Can't quite describe it. Sadly, there are too many people
of faith who are gullible and believe that because he's a pastor (he mentioned last night, his former occupation,) sorry Huck, but once an ordained pastor, always one in God's eyes and you are judged on a higher standard. That bothered me, it tells me that perhaps his pastoring was just another job. My husband waited years to ordained, he's honored by the call.
Bottom line, we will always be served platters of
shysters, politicians instead of statesmen as long as we refuse to honor God as we did as a people in the past. That's what this battle is about, I've had enough of 60's morals. And
those of us who are believers need to PRAY, PRAY
PRAY because it's evident man cannot solve our problems nor keep our children safe, only a forgiving, loving God can. 2 CHron. 7:14

Republican Party Listen Up
This Iowa Caucus should be a wake up call. Christian's vote largely on social conservative issues. I will not vote for anyone who is not pro-life or pro 2nd Amendment. Not gonna happen. If that means Hillary Clinton as President then so be it. I cannot give up my core beliefs for someone like Rudy because of security. I don't believe on 911 Rudy did anything but play to the media anyway. I know other voter who feel the same way. Lets put a good man in the office of president, I can think of only two running on the GOP side and none of the Democrat side. Wake up America!!!

the prosperity of the 1990s was a carryover from the prosperity of the 1980s.

The prosperity of the '80s was thanks to Ronald Reagan's policies, which reversed the disaster of the Carter administration.

The prosperity of the '90s was thanks to Newt Gingrich's Senate, and Bill Clinton only went along with them at last because it was clear that he and the Shrillster were going to get kicked out of the White House after they tried to hijack the entire medical industry and force us into socialized medicine.

After that experience, Bubba began his practice of sticking his moistened finger in the wind to see which way it was blowing.

Once again, the Leftie propaganda machine has started up, trying to force us into socialized medicine again. And as usual, they are using the misfortune of a bereft family as fodder for their scheme machine.

This is based PURELY on emotion, and has nothing to do with what will work.

SOS
Obama new Mantra: SOS Style Over Substance Why isn't anyone (the media) asking for details from this clown? He has none. Just hope and dreams... At least Romney, McCain, Giuliani have specific ideas on taxes, immigration, and Social Security. Wow, how stupid the American People are.

MLNICOSIA
I guess my point was that there are so many liberal seminaries, a degree in Theology tells me nothing.

Ever watch "Mysteries of the Bible" on cable TV? It is filled with comments by so-called Bible scholars who believe nothing in the Bible, and spend their lives trying to convince people that it is all a Fairy Tale.

"To shills for Romney"
**********************************************

I suppose you are speaking to MOI!

I am not a shill, because I am not getting paid for supporting the man.

I am not a Mormon, I am an Evangelical Christian.

I have no reason to support Romney except for the fact I would like to see the man win. So please comment on the statements I make instead of attacking my character.

Mountain Rose
A theology degree does mean something - and i respect the achievment. However, i would not choose a president because he did or did not have one.

I also would never support someone who lied about having one.

Mountain rose
"This is not the Republican Party that attracted me: the steadfast, logical techincians who wanted to run our economy based on sound principals rather than on emotion."

Who was the last Republican president to our country on sound economic principals? Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. all ran up our national debt with irresponsible spending and irresponsible tax cuts. Bush Jr. is topping them both with the national debt he's running up with this idiotic war.

Our economy is in shambles compared to what it was in the 1990’s. Is it me, or does it seem like we always have a national debt after a republican president has been in office? We had a budget surplus at the end of the Clinton Administration. When was the last time we could say that about a Republican executive office?

armagedon - Huck's Theology Degree
If I remember, Jerry Brown went to seminary...

Out here in California, we used to call Brown "Governor Moonbeam," when he was mayor of Oakland, the murder rate tripled, and now, as Attorney General of California he has been linked to Norman Hsu, of the Democratic fundraising scandal.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Brown

BTW, while you are at Wikipedia, check out Brown's official portrait as governor (LOL)!

Jerry Brown is also in the process of leading California in a law suit against the EPA, because he wants draconian law to reduce tailpipe emissions by 30% by 2016 (only 8 years away).

A theology degree means nothing, except to demonstrate that you stuck it out and finished school.

armagedon
If you support someone for president after he admits he lied about his theology degree than so be it. However, calling me a dirt digger for putting forth such evidence makes it clear that you are not a worthy debater and not worth listening to.

"Sheople" is not denigrating?
In another thread I listed a long list of name calling and smearing from conservatives, but I forgot "sheople," which I noticed one of the posters here used to describe the American people. Or even if he meant only a segment of the American people, this is a name which has the intent of repudiating, denigrating and demonizing a group of Americans. Liberals have more class than this.

Parker's Gratuitous, Grandiose Nonsense
REIFICATION: "To regard or treat an abstraction as if it had concrete or material existence."

Parker probably does not realize the extent to which she reifies reality. Remember, the major fault line for conservtives is between individualism and the collectivism of tradition.

Conservatives like Parker consistently speak of the abstractions of tradition as though they had "concrete material existence," rather than organic, though not necessarily moral, growth.

Parker has a notion here that the winner of this presidential election will be the one with the "right" morality and that "the majority" will have been the torch bearers of that rightness of morality.

Typical conservative Utopianism.

What a "Girlie" Comment, Star!
"I don't believe Americans today are looking for political technicians. I think they want to reach down, rediscover, and re-embrace the principles that have made this such a great nation."

This particular comment reminds me of why I regret us women getting the right to vote.

How pathetic if America picks our President based on such touchy-feely criteria!

This is not the Republican Party that attracted me: the steadfast, logical techincians who wanted to run our economy based on sound principals rather than on emotion.

It is smart to elect a political technician who is also a business expert, who can lead this country in the direction it needs to go rather than engage in a national therapy session.

Leave the therapy sessions to Oprah and Dr. Phool.

To shills for Romney
I have nothing much against Mitt, except I see him and Giuliani as positioning themselves as custodians of the Bush foreign policy. And I think that foreign policy is a disaster.

Apparently I am not the only one, given how Huckleberry won in Iowa, despite being outspent 15:1 by a slick Romney campaign. Even Romney now concedes that he, too, is for "change".

I think Mitt is bright, articulate, a great businessman, and would probably assemble a competent crew within his administration, which would be a welcome relief from our current president.

Voters are rejecting the ruthless Clinton machine, and "inevitability" of Hillary, among democrats, just as they are rejecting candidates among republicans who are heirs to Bush policies.

This election is about change...a repudiation of the status-quo, whether it be Bush on Iraq, or more years of a Clinton whitehouse.

I think dems will likely emerge victorious this November. The only slight chance for republicans is if they do NOT position themselves as advocating 4 more years of a Bush administration.

mlnicosia
uhuh...ok...and what else? does it really matter if he has a degree in theology to be a president? you are seriously making me think you are a little nonsense dirt digger. get over it! and i suppose you are just a perfect holy person yourself. let me guess...your a guliani supporter huh? intersting...

One more point
We turned down Mitt's dad in 1968, and got Richard Nixon, who may have done some good things, but also turned out to be an embarassment to the Republican Party.

Do we really want to turn down Mitt for the Huckster, who seems to have a bit of the bitterness that was an earmark of Richard Nixon? This bitterness came out in Huckabee's face and words at the Saturday night debate.

Do we really want to turn down Mitt Romney in favor of a man who's policies may turn out to rival Jimmuh Carter's?

Nice Article
People just jump to irrational conclusions all the time when Huckabee is mentioned.

Apparently, the ants.... I mean voters, are just supposed to line up and support any slick monkey with a lot of money to blow on propoganda and smear tactics.

mlnicosia
nice...and where did you get those facts? and do you really know what was going on there or did you just pick that part up from the establishment as well....seriously i can make up facts all i want but fats that are from a credible source means more. besides...who the heck cares? was it your business? i think not. so get over it. you guys make me sick with all your little nonsense complaining. its a tough world out there. suck it up and support a known christian that will hold up america not shove it down. because all of the republican candidates are a gamble anyway. politics is politics.

Ms. Parker's bad judgment
Ms. Parker's gushing praise of Huckabee is based on one thing--his religious views. She pays no attention to anything else about his record. She seems to think that the President of the United States should be anointed, and not elected. LIke most religioius conservatives, she thinks she's electing a high priest, a pastor-in-chief, rather than a political figure. I suspect she doesn't really like American politics very much--all that uncertainty, all that give-and-take. It would be much nicer to put God's guy in, and she's convinced that the Huckster is God's guy.

Too bad.

Class Envy hits the Republican Party
Huckabee seems to simply HATE Mitt Romney. Perhaps it is just because the diet is making the Huckster cranky, but I would like to suggest that it is envy.

Think about it: Mitt Romney has been successful in every arena that counts: He has a beautiful articulate wife, handsome well adjusted sons, a pile of money he made himself, pulled the Olympics out of a morass and made them into a successful event.

Mitt's family goes against the stereotype that children of successful people are n'er-do-wells.

Just the opposite: George Romney, Mitt's dad was successful in business as well, having been Chairman of the American Motor Corporation (AMC). He was also successful in politics, and served as the Governor of Michigan. In the late '60s, he ran for President, and though he lost the nomination to Richard Nixon, George served in the President's cabinet as Secretary of HUD. He was also became a prominant leader in the LDS church.

In spite of such a high profile upbringing, Mitt Romney turned out to be a stellar person, who seemed to do everything right. He has a family that would make Ozzie Nelson green with envy. In business, he takes dross and turns it to gold. He is the poster boy for the American Dream.

Mitt Romney is partly lucky, because he has a good background, but everything he has is from doing everything the right way, while living a clean, disciplined life. Isn't that what we as Republicans advocate?

How ironic that Republicans would behave jealously toward such a man!!!

Do we really want a Huckabee or a McCain, who stir up the flames of class envy, or do we want a positive man, who knows how to live the American Dream, and wants to show us the way?

Mike Huckabee has a theology degree?
More Facts for you armagedon:

“I think I’m stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism,” Huckabee told the Christian Broadcasting Network. “These are people that want to kill us. It’s a theocratic war. And I don’t know if anybody fully understands that. I’m the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well.”

But as it turns out ,the theology-degree claim is false.

You disagree with Obama's politics and positions. To equate that into the nation's self-destruction only shows that you'll say anything regardless of how moronic.

Huck's taxes
Someone enlighten me. Wasn't Huckabee compelled to act on the two biggest tax increases during his tenure as Gov. The sales tax was via a court order to increase funds for gov't schools and the gas tax had about 80% support from the residents in order to improve roads.

What he didn't do is spend the additional funds that came into Little Rock Treasury. I don't know about anyone else but don't we want someone that's going to willy nilly spend money because it's there?

HUCKABEE DEFIES THE US CONSTITITION
AND STATE LAWS

U.S CONSTITUTION, ARTICLE 1, SECTION 10 – No state shall enter into an agreement with a foreign Power . . . without the consent of Congress.
Mike Huckabee has also violated Arkansas State Law: Codes ANN 6-65-101, 22-2-114C(i), 22-5-401(b), 22-2-108.

Your tax dollars are funding a Mexican Consulate in Little Rock which will facilitate illegal alien jobs in violation of federal law. The consulate will also provide illegal aliens with legal assistance, passports, non-mandated benefits that American citizens cannot get, as well as other services.

Governor Huckabee has been asked to declare exactly what functions the Mexican Consulate will provide in addition to those listed. He has refused to answer.

FACTS:

A Huckabee bureaucrat, Robert Trevino signed an agreement with Mexico to lease state property to Mexico for one dollar. The agreement also provides for the use of one Arkansas state employee.
Note: Robert Trevino, former President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), funded by taxpayer dollars who are lobbying to obtain amnesty for 20 million or more illegal Mexican aliens, etc. LULAC is actively involved in the anti-American Mexican reconquista (take over) of the southwestern US by colonization and occupation.

A PRIVATE consortium of Arkansas corporations has signed a three year contract to fund all expenses incurred by the Mexican Consulate upon the expiration of the state’s lease. Why?
Note: The names of the consortium were blacked out by Trevino. Why and who are they? Guess!

The purpose of the Little Rock Mexican Consulate is to encourage Mexican illegal aliens to come to Arkansas which is ALSO a violation of the Federal Immigration Laws called ”Aiding and Abetting” illegal entry.

Mexican Consulate’s street address is a deserted building at 3500 So University in Little Rock.

Huck?
Huckabee increased state spending 65.3 percent (1996–2004) and supported five tax increases.

Huckabee publicly opposed the repeal of a sales tax on groceries and medicine in 2002, signed a bill raising taxes on gasoline in 1999, and signed a $5.25 bed-tax on private nursing home patients in 2001.

Iowa voted for a preacher - america will vote for a president.

Your post is filled with hypotheticals and conjecture that fail to address reality.

For instance:

The threat that Iran, Saddam's Iraq, Pakistan, Syria and Libya, to be specific (all of whom possess or are pursuing or have tried to pursue WMD), pose is that elements within these countries will supply Islamic terrorists with WMDs, the same terrorists who declare openly that this is precisely what they wish.

the powers in Iran or Pakistan or Syria could furnish terrorists with WMDs without them being traced back to them, they would do it in a heartbeat.

Those are opinions and propoganda, not backed up by any credible evidence. You further discredit your position with:

..Lying, backstabbing, underhanded deals, sneakiness, corruption are all integral parts of Middle Eastern culture..

which goes a long ways toward understanding that your phobia has overcome your common sense.

Russia and China are busy making energy deals with Iran and the former Soviet Republics of Central Asia. Our military solutions, based on hypotheticals, do not serve our interests in a spirit of cooperation necessary to maintain our position as the economic and moral leader of the 21st century.

Kristol, Obama, Huckabee
I believe that William Kristol's column this morning in the New York Times is his first there after much controversy about the Times hiring him, so I was eager to read it and see what Kristol had to say. He said that Huckabee may be the Republicans' best weapon against Obama since the two have a similar message. Interesting thought.

Almost excellent Article
What Star failed to point out is that O'bama and the Socialist Democrats will bankrupt the future of this Country, basically forcing the Sheople to beg for the Government to take control and give us Equality, at the expense of Freedom. The Younger Generation following O'bama is brain dead or they have been so indoctrinated by Academia that they don't even realize the threat that the Demonrats pose to America and our Liberties and Freedoms that we enjoy.
In regarding Huckabee, I don't think that she adequately pointed out that Huckabee's Federalistic beliefs will also further erode our Freedoms. Our Founding fathers realized that a Strong Federal Government would place in jeopardy everything that they our Country was founded on. Remember, the States should have more Power and Control then the Federal Government. Our Federal Government's only responsibility was to insure the rights granted by our Bill of Rights and Constitution and to protect ourselves from Foreign threats. By the way, Illegal immigration is a Foreign Threat, and Huckabee isn't our protector here, even though he says he is. Huckabee should not even be a consideration for the Conservative GOP, he is by definition a RINO. Huckabee is another George Bush who will end up violating his Conservative Core Supporters as GWB has done. The only GOP Candidates that can be identified as Conservatives in almost all issues: Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, and Newt Gingrich. McCain violated Conservatives with his Gang of 14 and in dealing with the likes of Feingold, Kennedy, and Kerry.

Interesting comments you have, lets go through a few of them.

"Islam has been at war with EVERYONE, repeat - EVERYONE, ever since its inception in violence"

As has Christianity, the Christian Crusades and the Atlantic Slave Trade waged by European “Christians”, and Israel’s violent actions to maintain their land are prime examples.

"The West is fighting religious fanatics to whom life is something to be destroyed, including their own, in the service of their killer god."

"Killer God"? Not all Muslims kill, and referring to the Muslim God as a “Killer God” is culturally offensive and ignorant on your part.

"The threat that Iran, Saddam's Iraq, Pakistan, Syria and Libya, to be specific (all of whom possess or are pursuing or have tried to pursue WMD)"

The United States is the ONLY country in human history to use a nuclear bomb on any nation. We have no moral authority TO SAY WHO CAN AND CAN'T HAVE NUKES.

"The Middle East does not play by the rules of civilized society. Lying, backstabbing, underhanded deals, sneakiness, corruption are all integral parts of Middle Eastern culture"

"Lying, "backstabbing", "underhanded deals" as you call it, has been apart of our American government as well. The neocolonialism that the United States has engaged in over several years has cost the lives of millions of people around the world. The Bay of Pigs, the Iran Contra scandal, and supporting Iraq, with weapons during the Iraq/Iran war are all obvious examples. As I stated earlier, the U.S has no moral authority to dictate what other countries can do within their own borders, a continuation of this kind of foreign policy will lead to more terrorist attacks on our soil

Obama in 2008!!!!

Every one has their own idea
of the change for which they have hope. Because Obama speaks in generalities, all kinds of meaning can be read into his words,... meaning to satisfy each voter.

As for Huckabee, voters see a return to civility and good. That is what they read into him. Not policy. (And he is touchy when raising taxes is brought up.)

But I think we all want change and that is change from the negativity, partisanship and lack of civility in Washington.

In earlier times, the office of the presidency was respected even if the person in it wasn't. I guess a real breakdown started when Clinton wore jeans in the oval office and had sex with Monica there.

Now, Pelosi, Reid and Dubin use the national media to call the president names.

A lot of people on the left talk about the lack of respect for our country felt by other countries around the world. Does it occur to others that daily bad mouthing by our leaders aided and abetted by the MSM is a telling message to the world others read about and hear? They don't know it is all nasty, no holds barred politics.

Is it any wonder the world doesn't respect either the accusers or the accused?

Change from this nastiness is what we want whether we are democrat or republican.

You beat me to it. I started reading this article believing that Star would highlight significant differences between the two candidates, but alas, that delusion evaporated by her third paragraph.

I would take your recommendation to abolish political speeches a step further. I think candidates should be given 10 or 12 topics and be compelled to write specific plans and platforms for those topics, for those of us who are interested in more than a few verbal pep rallies, along with specifics about his or her past voting records related to these topics.

For anyone who is interested in the WOT, illegal immigration, education, earmarks, spending cuts, tax reform -- anything -- we would have something more than political speeches to go on. And for the vast majority of silly voters who vote because this one looks presidential or that one was a Baptist minister -- they are going to vote just as dangerously anyway.

It is YOU who fails to understand the Islamic threat. First of all, let's get one thing straight. Islam has been at war with EVERYONE, repeat - EVERYONE, ever since its inception in violence. Today's manifestation in the form of global terrorism is simply its latest incarnation. Do you get the word "global"? The West is not fighting an ultimately rational nation such as China or Russia. The West is fighting religious fanatics to whom life is something to be destroyed, including their own, in the service of their killer god. The foremost threat to the civilized world today is the conjunction of these killer fanatics with WMDs and the use of these WMDs OUTSIDE the auspices of a national government. The threat is not the destruction of Western civilization, as you accuse those of us concerned with it, but the threat is the killing of potentially millions of innocents in one attack that would dwarf 9/11. This threat is orders of magnitude larger than the one posed by Russia and China, who frankly are only economic adversaries. The Middle East does not play by the rules of civilized society. Lying, backstabbing, underhanded deals, sneakiness, corruption are all integral parts of Middle Eastern culture. If there is a way the powers in Iran or Pakistan or Syria could furnish terrorists with WMDs without them being traced back to them, they would do it in a heartbeat. That is why Saddam needed to be taken out and why a massive American military presence in the Middle East is absolutely necessary.

Spending

Bush oversaw an administration and Congress that has run up over $4 trillion in debt in 7 years, which is something no previous administration or congress ever remotely approached. He may not have taxed, but he certainly did spend. The fiscal line that Star talks about has been completely erased. It is the GOP that now wears the crown once worn by the Democrats. The GOP cannot hope to win an election based on being more fiscally responsible than the Democrats, because their recent track clearly demonstrates that they are not. And this, as much as anything, is likely to define the campaign. It will be a continuation of compassionate conservatism, or of a liberal democrat. However, both translate into spending - and neither will spend less. They will only spend more.

Obama/Huckabee
Star,my second comment...just heard that Iranian
war ships are coming after USNavy ships, saying I
am coming after you and you WILL explode, etc. Is
anyone scared? I'm terrified of the wing-nut in charge over there!!! We need to stop using the luxury of "my party-your party" and concentrate on surviving and taking care of our country...and
we need to vow not to let another wing nut take over here!!!"Party time" is almost over, how about
getting down to business? Which candidate can best do that? How do we know? What is our yardstick?

New Political Parody
Huckabee-do-dah. My Blog

Shame on you Star!
Calling the Huckster a conservative is a joke! How can anybody so in love with tax & spend, and out of love with protecting our borders be considered anything but a RINO???? I am a firm advocate of the Fair Tax, but is this the only thing in his tank? Are ANY of the republican candidates going to stand up against the alien invasion? This is the most pressing problem affecting the country today folks! The supposed quotes of 20 billion dollars leaving the country could easily be quadrupled for what those in the country cost us in taxes being utilized for prison care, hospital care, drug and gang warfare, etc, etc, etc. So just how many hundreds of billions of dollars do we want to spend to further the invasion?
If Ron Paul could understand that we can no longer be isolationist, because the terrorists are already calling (remember 9/11?)then he could get my support, but it seems we are destined for another "compassionate conservative", tax & spend, whatever president regardless of who is elected. I am totally frustrated by all these candidates.

Obama/Huckabee
At this critical time ,we need a group of leaders for president who have
the best interest of the whole country as their
thrust...not the best interest of a political party.Not one person,but a group,working together.We are in trouble and I pray(and I'm NOT
an evangelical Christian, imagine that,I pray! And,I'm patriotic...doesn't THAT fly in the face of conventional "wisdom"?Or was that "Rovesque spin"?)for
guidance and direction so that we can survive. We
have so many fine minds in America, incredible resources for change...can we do it? Do we care
enough?Are we scared enough yet?

Not a Whole Lot of Differences
Assuming that Huck would do as his history show, there is not that much difference. Huck is a liberal, compassionate conservative -- equals large government and giveaways. Obama is a gross liberal that starts with large government and larger giveaways. Obama or Klintoon -- will dwarf LBJ's Great Society.

Spineless!!!
Ha, this man actually ran the state of Arkansas.
He captured the governorship and held it in a standoff. Arkansas is so heavily Democrat, and the Huckster actually got things done.
Should he be Prez? I don't know, but spineless does not fit.

baffled
I am, quite honestly, baffled by Star's support of Huckabee. He is all the worst things of G.W. Bush without any of the redeeming qualities. He seems to sign up for the compassionate conservative ideals, which we all know is neither compassionate nor conservative. His compassion for illegals is totally misplaced - whatever benefits we give illegals is truly taken out of the pockets of working Americans. It's not like a job overseas that actually acrues some benefit to the country as a whole. What I hear when Huckabee talks about foreign policy is a really squishy, over-cooked-pasta kind of sound where his spine ought to be. When one couples that with the corruption that passes for retail politics in Arkansas what we would end up with under a Huckabee administration is the Republican version of Jimmy Carter whose only redeeming quality is that he didn't do as much actual damage as LBJ.

Huck Sucks
But he is the only one that can touch people enough to beet Obama.
The Conservatives have no principles and better yet no idea of why they should have them.
Huck can preach to motivate people. He can explain things in a way that reached out to people.
Romney can not.
People simply do not identify with him. The only people that like Romney are elites and pundits. Out side the base he is toast. Obama is reaching across demographics the only other person able to do that is Huck.

Excellent column, Star!
Excellent column, Star!!

Keep up the good work,

Star this your absolute worst column
You talk about drawing lines. But you don't talk about the Huckster in this regard. Among other things he is a tax and spend, somewhat corrupt, pro-amnesty father of a possibly sociopathic if not psychopathic son.

You are not viewed by your readers as another hack that has to get out a column every month. You are highly respected for your expertise and passion in the areas of education, morality, and race.

But now you seem to be dipping into the exciting world of political sportscasting. And you are just no good at it. If you put in the time I am sure you will have a lot to contribute. But you obviously haven't put in much time studying this campaign. You keep this up and you are going to start losing credibility.

BEING AMAZED AND LOVING HUCKABEE'S GRACE
GO MIKE, YOU'RE ABOVE NORMAL IN EVERY AREA, BUT YOU DON'T RUB OUR NOSES IN YOUR OWN IMPORTANCE AND YOU MAKE US LAUGH---AND SING...I'M LOVING BEING AMAZED ...HOWEVER, I'M SURE YOU CAME OUT OF SOMEWHERE INSTEAD OF NOWHERE...THE PRESS WAS BUSY DOING BAD NEWS AND MISSED THE GOOD NEWS OF YOU.

Huckabee will be our greatest President
He will be greater than Reagan.

Hope
Hopefully the boom will keep going across America. I think he is the best to win nationally. He is the only one talking about new ideas, the fair tax, the GOP isn't just for the rich. He does well in debates, quick mind and knows his stuff.

If you think he's weak on foreign policy or the war on terrorism, watch him on Meet the Press rattling off facts about Pakistan and saying tactical strikes on terrorists inside Pakistan is acceptable and needs to be done.
