The Supreme Court gives reason for hope

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In a week of news about tragedy, despair, pointless violence and death, the U.S. Supreme Court has brought us tidings of hope.

With the court's 5-4 ruling upholding the constitutionality of the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, passed in 2003, the court confirmed that this is a decent, moral, and civil nation. The ruling secures this fact in our present, and shines light of hope for our future.

If anything might be contributing to the sense of gloom that that seems to grip American hearts and minds these days, it is doubt about this. We forget that nothing unsettles the human mind more than a feeling that the social fabric is unraveling.

More disappointing is that what we have is a decision that only touches how an abortion may be done, not whether it may be done. The brutal and inhuman procedure that is banned _ partial delivery and then destruction of the unborn child _ accounts for a small percentage of the almost 1 million abortions that are now being done each year.

Although the nature and scope of the problem that has been addressed is limited, we measure the preservation of human life one at a time. So this is a great victory.

Justice Anthony Kennedy included in the decision he wrote graphic discussion describing the horror of this procedure. Liberal and pro-abort journalist Dahlia Lithwick calls this the "business of grossing us out."

In a graphic scene in the recent movie "Amazing Grace," about William Wilberforce's crusade to end the slave trade and slavery in the British Empire, Wilberforce pulls a boat of British elite, quietly and politely sitting and dining, alongside a docked slave ship. Wilberforce disturbs their peaceful respite with the stench of the slave ship.

So Justice Kennedy has done here. He includes the testimony of a nurse who participated in one of these procedures:

"The baby's little fingers were clasping and unclasping, and his little feet were kicking. Then the doctor stuck the scissors in the back of his head, and the baby's arms jerked out ... The doctor opened up the scissors, stuck a high powered suction tube into the opening, and sucked the baby's brains out ... Now the baby went completely limp. He threw the baby in a pan, along with the placenta, and the instruments he had just used."

I believe that Kennedy was conveying a message here, appropriately, that it is inconceivable that a free, moral, and civil society can tolerate this.

To state what should be obvious, law exists to sustain life, not the other way around. It is clear that certain lines, when crossed, create circumstances that, on the simplest levels of human intuition and sensitivity, are unacceptable. And, if indeed somehow, we seem to think they are acceptable, this should serve as an alarm to the state of our own humanity.

Partial birth abortion clearly crosses this line.

This said, I think we know a lot more today also about the moorings of our two political parties. Continued...

Aint it funny?
How a woman who has had FOUR abortions can now be a voice for the pro-life side of the debate?!

anti-partial-B-Yes, anti Roe idiots-Boo
In 1973 the country was 49% in favor while 47% indicated opposition to Roe v Wade. It has remained stable for the last +30 years with small variations. In later detailed polls it clear there is a hard core 15-25% on each side and about 50% that are in the middle, neither illegal or legal always. 62% would NOT like to see Roe V Wade overturned, 29% would and 9% unsure. Late term? against 61%, for 28%, unsure 11%. SO THERE YOU ARE.

When it comes down to party affiliation, Dems and Republicans, polls show 78%/70% want to allow some kind legal abortion. When it comes to not allowing abortions, the dems are 21% and republicans are 28%. Think about that when you call liberals baby killers.

Bottom line, not much has changed in 30 years. We are a democracy with a constitution. Law will prevail weather you like it or not. So all the pro-life evangelicals who are trying to manipulate the government, you are doing it the wrong way. You should be preaching the gospel and spreading Gods word in your church and your communities, not playing politics. Who is taking care of the flock while you are playing politics. Frankly churches that get into politics are going against Gods word and should also lose their tax exemption.

Yea for the supreme court. Aborting a viable fetus that's near or in the third-trimester is 100% wrong and in line with Roe v. Wade. Most ALL americans agree, including liberals. Anyone making it a political or liberal thing out of it is an IDIOT and likely an extreme hypocrite. Its a social issue that needs serious social change, not politics and law. From the polls not much has changed, except more people are against late term (about 69%), which is a good thing.

How many unwanted crack babies have you adapted? Do you think conservatives are NOT having sex and aborting unwanted babies? YEA RIGHT! You are a total moron. Teen sex, unwanted babies and abortion is a serious social issue, but its way beyond fools who have one agenda, to preach, feel holier than thou and make it about politics. The hard part is the work to help the people that need it, mostly poor and uneducated.

Regardless of political leaning, most people ARE for seriously restricting and prohibiting late term or partial birth abortion, including LIBERALS.

The crazy anti Roe v Wade fanatics are not going to be happy until they can regulate all our lives with religion. THESE FOLKS (+14%) SCARE THE MAJORITY OF AMERICA, conservatives, liberals, christian and non-Christians alike. Part of the anti-abortion group, not all but part, is like radical islamic fundamentalism. They will stop at nothing to impose their will.

These crazies took this court decision as a rally cry that government can and should be used to impose a theocracy. They think they can elect enough people to appoint justices until they can overturn Roe V Wade. Good luck, it will never happen. The founding fathers and constitution, bill of rights and law will keep the radical extremest from taking over the country. God bless America. MOST PEOPLE WANT Roe v. Wade for all the reasons that where debated over 30 years ago, in the GOOD OLD DAYS.

Fact, this late term decision really re-affirmed Roe v Wade, which is good news. The bad news is the republican neo-con's pander to the religious far right, aka, evangelicals, for one reason, VOTES. Every evangelical church leader and school that gets into politics should LOSE THEIR TAX EXEMPT STATUS.

No where in the bible does it say become the government or manipulate it. It does say FOLLOW IT, FOLLOW THE LAW OF THE LAND. Guess what, no one is MAKING YOU HAVE AN ABORTION (like they do in China). We live in a free country. Abortions are a private matter, as it should be. What part of OTHER PEOPLES LIVES AND NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND. Abortion is a sad choice and business, but its in Gods hands not ours. Pray for them. Put your faith in God, right.

You want to go out and convert people to Christianity, than you better be wearing out shoe leather knocking on doors EVERY DAY to make new disciples. You can't do it by government.

Where does the bible talk about abortion? No where. Murder? yea but we're in Iraq, indirectly causing mass death of innocent lives and have no problem supporting and pandering to the NRA's no gun control special interest. Get your story straight. What about priest having sex with little boys while your church looked the other way and covered it up? That's evil, immoral and wrong. Take a deep breath self righteous hypocritical preachers and get a mirror. You are no better than, as you say, liberal or anyone that had an abortion. Ouch that is going to leave a mark. You are a sinner; to think other wise, means you are not a Christian.

America is a free country with personal rights and freedoms. Which means you don't get to tell people what to do or think, sorry. But with freedom comes responsibility. I think woman should choose what to do with their bodies, like keep their legs together, and men should choose to not stick it in every warm spot they can find. Yep, personal responsibility.

If teens or adults are going to have recreational sex in or out of marriage than use protection. Duuh. Why we don't see birth control ads on TV? I don't know. Why don't we teach it more in school and the communities. It should be taught and available. It will save unwanted pregnancies and abortions. AM I THE ONLY ONE? Is that not obvious. I would be for the government paying for birth control. Yep. But OH NO, we can't do that because THE CHURCH does not want to talk about birth control. Well TOO BAD. THE CHURCH (made up of men not Gods) are wrong. All anti-abortion folks should be handing out condoms on every street corner.

Yep the family and church should teach this. The decay of the family is all the gays and liberals fault? NOPE. Its a problem for all of us.

Decay of family? How about the GOP presidential candidates. They are all serial adulterers (except the flip flop liar mormon). WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE! I bet there was an abortion or two in there to boot. The top three democrat candidates have all been married for a long time, ONCE, not three times. From this we can assume ALL conservatives are PRO divorce and adultery? Nice family values.

ATTN: To all you who equate liberals exclusively to ABORTION BABY KILLERS, SHUT UP. Every time this comes up its LIBERALS!!!! I know lots of liberals that are against abortion. I also know lots of conservatives who are against making abortion illegal. I know of republicans and conservatives that paid for or asked their mistress to get an abortion. SHUT UP YOU GOSH DARN HYPOCRITES!! There are 1.2 million of them a year, you think none of them are republicans or conservatives? ha ha ha.

The supreme court did the right thing. MOST AMERICANS, ACROSS ALL PARTY AND BELIEFS AGREE. There is a radical small group that thinks you should be able to kill a baby post delivery, they are sick and crazy, but stop saying this is what ALL liberals want or any liberal is about.

Mark Foley is a raging, homosexual, predatory, pedophile, so that means all republicans are pedophiles? Bush is a terrible leader, so all republicans make terrible President?

All problems are caused by liberals is so over used and lost all meaning, used like a slur, a pejorative. Blame all social decay on liberals? At the point you say LIBERAL, I know you are no longer thinking. You are just spewing rhetoric and propaganda.

Roe V Wade has been around for over 30 years, GET OVER IT. If you want to work on social issues, work on social issues, but you can't legislate people into submission or morality.

Everyone that wants to lower the number of abortions in the USA, work with your church and civic groups and pray a lot. Donate all your free time and spare money to sex education, adaption and spreading birth control to everyone, including poor people, who are more likely to be the ones having late term abortions. Heavy weight woman (usually uneducated or low IQ) end up getting pregnant and DON'T EVEN KNOW IT! This is america for God sakes. What about the high school girl that gave birth during her prom and dumped the child into a dumpster. This is crazy for things like this to happen in the USA.

Anti-Roe v Wade protest are not helping these poor woman or babies. If you want all these babies, YOU BETTER STEP UP TO adopt some babies if Roe v Wade is overturned.

Leave the government out of our lives and legislating morals. If not, why stop at abortion, make fornication illegal. Arrest anyone having premarital sex. Hey the Taliban stones woman to death for having premarital sex. YIPPEE !!!!

Frankly I'm not to thrilled about having LOTS of unwanted babies born into poverty. A young fertile white couple does not want a crack baby. They want their own. For this to work we need to stop having our own babies and adapt all of these 1.2 mil babies. We are not talking designer Madonna or Angelina Jolie babies, we're talking about some babies with serious problems. Some mentally retarded or incapable of having a productive life. The out look is not pretty. They end up in foster homes or state homes there whole life. I am just saying with birth control we would have less of them.

You think the 10 million undocumented illegal aliens is a problem...... think about it. Why is the Catholic church against birth control and has the approved and weird rhythm method BS. The bigger the family the more people in the church and more money. The bible does say go forth, be fruitful and multiply, but does not say have a litter of puppies. Why does the catholic church want unlimited immigrants from Mexico? More catholics. Bishops in the US are not going to follow the law and hide illegal aliens. The catholic church should lose its tax exempt status in each parish that does this. They are also are not following Gods law.

Sadly the Evangelicals don't want to spread the idea of birth control, especially the ones that need it the most, youth and poor in america and world wide. WHY? Because they say so. Interpretation of the bible based on opinion is a dangerous thing. No where does the bible forbid birth control.

******
Unwanted pregnancy and abortion is a complicated social problem; we don't need radical people that have no ability to think and compromise to do what is best, reasonable and workable. Sadly politics is about special interest pandering and not what is best for the common good of the nation.
******

I HATE THE IDEA OF ANY ABORTION, but than I hate all sin; no sin is worse than another. Serious social issues take serious minds.

For the folks that PLUG the word liberal in as a synonym for baby killer or evil, I know you are totally stupid. Get an original thought.
