Will Obama choose to be somebody or to do something?

With unemployment at 10.2%, what will happen by the end of Obama's first term?

Jean Monnet, the founder of the European Common Market, once observed that there are two different types of people. Those who want to be somebody and those who want to do something.

So which is Barack Obama? He says he's running for president to "transform the country." But until he delivers on policy specifics that clearly show how, we've got to conclude he's really just another smooth politician who wants to be somebody.

I have good news for Senator Obama. He can capture the high ground he's trying to claim, reinvent his party, help the country and improve the lives of low income folks, all with a single, courageous swath.

Obama should embrace two important reforms that heretofore have been identified with the Republican Party. He should come out in support of transforming Social Security into a regime of privately owned retirement accounts and in support of school choice.

The private retirement account reform initiative has, of course, gone nowhere. School choice, included in the initial version of No Child Left Behind and then stripped out, has made selective inroads through local initiatives around the country.

An important reason why both these key and innovative reforms have made so little progress is that, although they have been proposed by Republicans, their primary beneficiaries are low income voters who traditionally vote Democratic.

Because of this disconnect, the large and energetic political constituency essential to any major reform has never crystallized for either issue.

For higher wage earners, the payroll tax is an annoyance, but not a major obstacle to wealth creation. After paying in their portion of the 12.4 percent tax, and reaching the $97,500 cap, they have plenty of disposable income left to invest in real wealth creating assets.

For low-income earners, however, this is not the case. All or most of the income they might have had to invest is locked into paying the payroll tax that yields payments at retirement that equate to returns hovering around zero percent.

Unfortunately, these low income earners have been subjected to disinformation campaigns by Democratic Party politicians, unions, the AARP, the NAACP and others that contributions into a highly diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds over 45 years is a risky proposition not worth taking over the guaranteed zero return of Social Security. Obama
My friend and co-worker sent me this website to give me a perspective on what people are saying about Sen Obama. And needless to say, I am dismayed and disgusted with all of the hate that is premeating this board. I too, am a minority, and a recently retired senior ranking military officer. I am saddened by most your comments.

I watched Obama's speech, and did not hear him say that he was like Lincoln. Yet some of you said he made that comparison. That is shameful and irresponsible to pin those comments on him. Some, or most of you are just plain pityful, too much time on your hand to spread nothing but hate. I have traveled the world and now realize why so many foreign countries hate Americans. It is because of people like most of you on this board twisting the truth to spread hatred and fear. One of you commented that Obama lacked qualification to become President. What a ridiculous statement.

According to my studies, to become a U.S. President you need to be a naturalized citizen and over the age of 35. I think you meant to say, he lacks experience...now that would be a more reasonable comment. I will concede his limited experience, but that surely did not stop Arnold from being Govenor of California. Or, someone you champion as one of your greatest Repulican Presidents, Ronald Raegan. I don't recall President Raegan having near the mental acumen as Obama, yet, I am sure to most of you conserative types, he was "The Man". At the end of the day, what really makes a good, bad, or a great President are his Cabinet members.

Just as in the military, a good Officer, is only as good as his NCO's and his Soldiers. Nothing more, nothing less. The shameful part of the majority of your comments is, whatever happened to giving someone a fair chance? That is what all people want in life. How can someone make it to the pinnacle if that person is never given a fair shake...For Blacks and minorities, you people never cease to amaze me, here it is 2007, in the midst of a war on all fronts, Soldiers from all walks of life pitching in, some losing their precious lives almost daily.

Soldiers fighting for what you obviously take for granted, democracy and equality for all. It is easy to understand why the vast majority of Blacks vote Democratic, it is because of the comments on this board that solidifies our beliefs that we live in a very racist country. For confirmation, all we have to do is check this very board. I would like to address one of this board contributors comment about "Black Leadership".

For sometime now, the blacks have been slowly but surely moving to the middle class. We don't think of black politicians, lawyers, doctors, and others as our leaders. They are simply professionals who happen to be Black. So, please stop the outdated assertion that Blacks need leadership. What we need is equal opportunities and fairness. We want good schools for our children, medical coverage, security, and good jobs just as you do to name a few. We don't need "Black Leaders", to tell us that. I earn in excess of 250K a year, why do I need "Black Leaders" to tell me what right looks like...

So, conservatives--please stop making yourselves look like the a bunch of racist idiots. Stop w/the Black Leadership crap--it's woefully outdated....Some of you have said Obama has not shown any substance--wow--what a revelation. Can someone please tell me which President candidate has? I don't think so, yet you are demanding something from this candidate that I have yet to see ANYONE demand from Hillary, Mitt, John, or any of the other candidates.

Now you know why Blacks are always suspicious of Republicans/Conservaties...As I sit in the heart of Afghanistan moving with ease amongst the Afghans and sometimes under the threat of the Taliban in a civilian capacity. Sadly, I am more fearful of your comments and racist expectations than being here in the heart of the Taliban's Last Stand...

"But until he delivers on policy specifics that clearly show how, we've got to conclude he's really just another smooth politician who wants to be somebody (SP)."

Yes, just like Richard Nixon who had a "Secret Plan," to end the war in Vietnam.
***

"The private retirement account reform initiative has, of course, gone nowhere (SP)."

So why should Obama hitch his ride to a Republican loser idea that's going nowhere?
***

"For low-income earners, however, this is not the case. All or most of the income they might have had to invest is locked into paying the payroll tax that yields payments at retirement that equate to returns hovering around zero percent (SP)."

Yeah, the payroll tax which George H.W. Bush said Reagan raised five times.

Some friend of the poor.

Give me a flying break!!!

"Unfortunately, these low income earners have been subjected to disinformation campaigns by Democratic Party politicians, unions, the AARP, the NAACP and others that contributions into a highly diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds over 45 years is a risky proposition not worth taking over the guaranteed zero return of Social Security (SP)."

Nope. Blacks see clearly the reason behind the RNC Naked White Lady ad and vote accordingly... AGAINST REPUBLICANS.

Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the AARP, the Unions, nor the NAACP have anything to do with it.

We can think for ourselves!!!
***

"Thus, these individuals are deprived of the opportunity of prudent accumulation of hundreds of thousands of dollars of wealth over their lifetime (SP)."

Yes, America can start by making black incomes 100% of that of white incomes instead of the 79% it is at present.
***

"But low-income families' kids are trapped in hopelessly failing inner city public schools (SP)."

Yeah, because States like Virginia shut down the public schools rather than integrate with blacks, and then built all-white pristine schools, while the black kids were left to rot in the ghetto.

Now you want to propose giving public voucher dollars as a reward to the pristine all white suburban schools, to integrate with the very blacks they ran away from in the first place.

Is that any way for a Strict Constructionist to act?

Strict Constructionist do not be believe in rewarding people for bad behavior.
***

"Senator Obama could change the political landscape. It's no secret that the Democratic victory last November was a vote against Republicans and had nothing to do with any positive Democratic agenda. Here's a real chance to help low-income folks, the country, and re-invent a Democratic Party bankrupt of ideas (SP)."

I wonder how Obama got this far... Without Conservative Help!!!
