Richards incident says something about morality, too

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Let's take a closer look at so-called comedian Michael Richards' racist outburst that is capturing so much press and airtime. The incident, and what has ensued, tells me more about the overall pathetic moral state of our country than it does about racism.

Richards claims he's not a racist, despite attacking a black heckler, at a comedy club where he was performing with a string of the most inflammatory, demeaning, and vulgar racial slurs.

Is it possible that he's not? Maybe. It's possible that he's just a moron.

But check out the deep soul searching that this inane incident has provoked across the nation.

The general sentiment is pretty much captured in a column by The Washington Post's Eugene Robinson who sees in what happened here sad proof that "racism is not dead" in America.

I am in complete agreement with Mr. Robinson that racial animosity lives. But I certainly didn't need Michael Richards' imbecility as proof of this.

If we should be thinking about anything, it should be to try and understand why, after all these years, racial consciousness persists.

As satisfying as it might be for some to watch, Mr. Richards groveling around on television apologizing isn't going to help much. Nor are any sums that left wing legal entrepreneur Gloria Allred might extract from him. Nor are apologies to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (the knee-jerk assumption that these two black ministers speak for 40 million black Americans I think is equally racist).

Allow me to suggest that racism and racial consciousness persist and loom large because we choose it to be this way.

Eugene Robinson says that Michael Richards did not see a heckler. Instead, says Robinson, he saw a black heckler. But we live in a country that insists on placing all its citizens in racial categories and using measures of how these categories stack up as measures of national decency.

Every major institution _ business, government, educational _ one way or another keeps track of how many blacks it has on board. Every major corporation has a diversity officer to make sure the colors of the beans are in order. Every corporation gets surveys from the NAACP asking them how many blacks they've got.

When I get a loan from the bank, the loan officer sheepishly asks if it's OK to report that I'm black.

We have institutionalized race consciousness to the very core of our society, so it should be evident why it persists. It's the law.

These laws, by transforming human beings into racial categories, dehumanize blacks and whites. Blacks feel less personally responsible for their own lives and whites are forced to relate to blacks as beans to count rather than human beings. One result is animosity of blacks toward whites and whites toward blacks.

Which leads to the second, and related, point. Racism is no longer understood as a moral problem. It is a political problem.

The success of the civil rights movement of the 1960's was its moral power. The few prevailed over the many because they had moral conviction _ truth _ on their side.

Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech was not a speech. It was a sermon. He talked about character and exhorted Americans to strive for liberty because we are "God's children."

King was not an impractical man. He knew that laws needed to be passed to deal with segregation and the absence of equality under the law. But he also knew that law "cannot change the heart" and that for us to become a greater nation, we needed to be a more moral nation.

This said, consider the circumstances of the Richards incident. It took place in a comedy club in Los Angeles. These places are cesspools of profanity and degrading sexual and scatological humor, delivered in a haze of alcohol.

The black heckler yelled out, "It's not funny. That's why you're a reject. Never had no shows, never had no movies. 'Seinfeld' _ that's it."

This tastelessness doesn't justify Richards' racist diatribe. But on the other side of the coin, blacks who want a better world ought to get out of the gutter.

For me it is commentary on our overall sorry moral state that as news shows obsessed over this mindless incident, they totally ignored an Associated Press story this same week reporting that out-of-wedlock births in the U.S. reached 37.5 percent in 2005, a record high. The figure for blacks is almost double this.

Perhaps this holiday season it is worth considering that racism will be with us as long as evil remains within us. The answer will not come from politicians and lawyers.

It will come only when we raise ourselves up. Only then, in the words of Dr. King, will we be able to say "thank God Almighty, we are free at last."

Richard's Comments
were decidedly un-Christian, but I don't see anything wrong with it outside of Christian standards. The world values retailiating in-kind for injury.

Richards is getting the treatment not because his remarks were un-Christian, but because he blasphemed one of the sacred cows of liberalism.

Michael Richard's Comments
What I feel is lost in all the furor over Michael Richard's comments is the fact that the hecklers responded by getting equally racist, calling Mr. Richard's a "Cracker". I find those actions, along with their behavior and rudeness, just as reprehensible. Anyone who has been to a comedy club knows if you heckle a comedian on stage expect to get put down. Michael Richards went for the juglar vein. The hecklers, in my opinion, got what they deserved.

Ms. Parker --
You have a dog in this fight. You are clearly very emotionally involved. One would not expect clear or rational ideations, under such circumstances. For this, you can be forgiven.

But the name-calling that you feel empowered to engage in is of the same caliber if not intensity as that of Mr. Richards. He was insulted and threated, in that he was publically invalidated while performing his craft. He lashed out as comedians do, striking at appearance and stereotypes. A couple of loudmouth blacks who talk during a performance. Hmm. Sort of a stereotype, wouldn't you say? True or not?

In such circumstances it isn't the highest part of the brain that responds. Witness your own one-sided opinion. So Richards, a free-association comic, made ample use of the enword.

By the way, it wasn't a "string" of "slurs." It was really one slur, repeated. Unless you count em-effer, which is rather non-specific racially.

I discuss it in detail here:

http://forgottenprophets.blogspot.com/2006/11/unforgiven.html

It seems necessary to clarify our definitions. Racism is not the mere acknowledgment of racial differences. It is the belief that one race is superior. Well. As Chris Rock has so ably pointed out, there is enwordish behavior. It's like redneck behaviour. Ignorant. Inferior. It isn't about race. It's about a culture, white or black, urban or rural, of ignorance and sloth and self-defeat. Is this racist?

No. It's culturist. And there are, most assuredly, inferior cultures. Cannibal culture. Inferior. Islamist culture. Inferior. Wife-beating culture. Inferior. Enwordish culture, where succeeding is "acting white" and where being an unwed teen mother is a badge of adulthood: inferior.

"As satisfying as it might be for some to watch, Mr. Richards groveling..." For shame.

"...apologizing isn't going to help much." Help whom? Who was hurt? Two loudmouths and their dates felt insulted. An audience felt awkward. It's called free speech. Deal with it. They, and they only, deserve an apology. Maybe.

"Eugene Robinson says that Michael Richards did not see a heckler. Instead, says Robinson, he saw a black heckler." Mr. Robinson must be a mutant, what with his mind-reading powers.

As for being free at last, of course self-governance is pivotal. Too bad you seem to think that includes the governance of others, as well. Mr. Richards, if he is, has the right to be a racist. Something about freedom. You get that idea, right? About freedom?

Manners
There's no way to justify the nature of Michael Richard's rant. But Ms. Parker seems determined to let this loutish heckler off the hook.

Let's put this incident in some kind of context. Michael Richards is a comic actor, not a comedian. There's a tremendous difference. A comedian--a standup comic--is used to dealing with hecklers, and has several lines ready to deal with them. A comic actor never has to put up with stuff like that, and so couldn't be expected to be ready for them.

The other thing to remember is that this was a benefit. The performers were there to raise money for charitable causes, and audience members would have to be pretty thick-headed not to know this. These kinds of events often bring noted performers onto comedy-club stages that they're not used to.

If the yahoo that heckled Michael Richards had had any class at all, he would simply have listened politely to Richards' routine, and clapped politely when Richards left the stage.

Instead, he started hurling insults at Richards. Richards, caught off guard, probably managed to ruin what was left of his career.

How much better off would everybody be if this nameless knucklehead had simply minded his manners?

Thanks
For putting this in perspective.

Here is a cesspools of profanity and everyone has thier feelings hurt that filth comes out of it.

The blob of this cesspool has spread fuller than these comedy clubs.

Star Parker

I believe that Star hit the nail on the head with her article re: Michael Richards derogatory remarks. God forbid that the liberal media pick up on what really happened here. In my opinion, the real news would have been exactly as stated by Star, that paraphrased, this country is in a moral decline, as compared to the decline of the Roman Empire. Let the truth be heard.

paranoia
This doesn't say much about US society-except maybe Hollyweird's society.

It says something about Mike Richards but to apply it to the whole country is ridiculous.

This is news?!
Richards is obviously an over the hill has been comedian with issues who had a "road rage" type melt down who by birth is a "white" guy. Yes it was offensive; geez, give it a rest.

May I edit...
edit: "...who by birth is..." insert: unfortunatley here "..a "white" guy."

Michael Richards not offensive
The only thing that I consider offensive about this whole thing is that Townhall would allow someone to come on here defending the idiot hecklers.

To Ms. Parker:
So muh for your usual "common sense" ...What about the "low class " of the hecklers? Michael Richards has "hung" himself as his own punishment.

Wow!
Michael richards has the right to free speech. No one can tell him what to say. However, people also have the right to be critical of what he said. Think of the furor expressed on this very page about comments made by the Dixie Chicks a few years ago. Not many on this page wasted effort defending the Chicks' free speech. Jerubaal, I'm assuming that you must not be Christian, if you can make a statement such as "but I don't see anything wrong with it outside of Christian standards". There are many things that are done which are not wrong outside of Christian standards, but when taken within a Christian context, are wrong, and thus a Christian would not make such a statement.

There are a plethora of words that Richards could have chosen to aim at hecklers - MF, as whole, dumb as, ree tard, etc. But he chose exactly the words he wanted to use, and like the Dixie Chicks, he's now paying for it.

Apologize to Jesse Jackson
Am I the only one to see the irony in Richards going on the Jesse Jackson radio show to beg for forgiveness? Richards is Jewish. Did Jackson then apologize for his "Hymie Town" comments? I am shocked that JJ still has any credibility. Just proves that if you are on the left and make mistakes, the MSM will ignore it and/or cover for you.

Stop Defending Richards
It wouldn't have taken a rocket scientist to know that if this topic was broached on townhall that most of the bloggers would focus their attention on (and blame) the hecklers. Hecklers are a part of the comedy club scene. Stand-up comedians expect hecklers to be in the audience sometimes. How they deal with hecklers may often determine their success as a stand-up comedian. The fact remains that regardless of how rude the hecklers were, Richards' response was in no way justified. I don't know how this will affect his career, but he should expect certain consequences for his actions.

my 2 cents
Yes we still have a problem with racism in this country - white racists and black racists.

What angers me is not what Richards said but that he gave al & jesse yet another opportunity for some headlines.

A few years ago jj was in the headlines for having fathered a little girl out of wedlock and using some money from one of his organizations to pay for it. At the same time it was revealed that way back in 1998 when bill 'trailer trash' clinton had been having some extracurricular adventures - he had gone to jj for 'spiritual counseling' and this was at the same time that jj was having his adventure. The truly spectacular hypocrisy of the events seems to have eluded the press.

Now we have Richards apologizing to jesse 'hymietown' jackson in another act of tsh.

Which leads me to the simple question:

What are the qualifications of Al Sharpton and Jesse jackson besides the color of their skin?

Martin Luther King said he dreamed of the day when his children would be judged by the content of their character rather than by the color of their skin.

That day has arrived long ago, but folks like al and jj are hoping that there are still enough suckers out there not to notice.

the enword - get over it.

Richards and the Hecklers
Has anyone printed just what Richards had said that precipitated the heckler's comments; then what the heckler actually said; then exactly what Richards said in reply? If this were known, we could make our own opinions on the incident. What type civility do you expect in such an environment? The raucous behavior in such a location is what probably appeals to its patrons. I would suspect that club's business has vastly improved since this incident.

to Rushsux
It is absurd to compare what Richards said to what the Dixie Chicks said almost 4 years ago. Richards' career is probably over because of what hesaidd and the Dixie Chicks are riding high because of what they said. The made the comment almost 4 years ago and they are STILL getting mileage from it - their last album went gold or whatever within a week of its release, and not because of their musucianship - it is because of their statements about how much they hate President Bush. Every story you see about the uses that statement as a reference point, so it is fair to conclude that they are milking that puppy for everything they can. They are musical lightweights who are smart enough to hire top notch Nashville musicians and go out on the road and show a lot of leg and make noble statements about freedom of the press and make up stories about 'death threats' and pose as artists willing to stand up for their beliefs, etc. And anyone who questions them is automatically insensitive, or whatever derogatory adjective is in fashion these days.

This whole Situation
This is a situation that has gotten blown out of size. How many times have white people been the brunt of black comedian's tirades? How many times have we asked for a national apology from the comic? No.......90% of us would do one of two things, we'd ignore it or get up and walk out. Nothing was stopping those two men from leaving if they thought he wasn't funny. He didn't need to shout what he did in heckling Mike Richards. Besides what Richards does know how much it takes to get on ANY nationaly shown television program. That heckler has no idea how much work it actually is to be a successful comedian.
Personally I think he got what he deserved and is showing just how childish he really is by making a federal case out of it.
But, I do not like how Richards handled it. He could have done it differently. Maybe in what the heckler said hit a sore spot and Richards shouted back in the heat of the moment. In essence what we have here is TWO wrongs.
First the heckler should have kept his comments to himself and now not make himself look like a child in his wanting revenge.
Second, Richards is wrong in the way he handled it and showed just as much childish behavior. Let's be adults here, How many times does Richards have to apologize? Should we put him on a cross and let him suffer two or three months just because he insulted someone who is black? Wow! If I wanted a nationally televised or headline from everyone who has ever insulted me, I wouldn't be able to pursue other more worthy pursuits.
Let's stop all this crap and move on. Maybe just maybe ALL of us black, white, red ,brown, yellow who are comedians will stop and see it really isn't funny to poke fun at other people.

Michael Richards
It is a shame that Mr. Richards flamed out in such a spectacular way. He has destroyed his career, most likely. This may be warranted. The real shame is that this episode has opened up a frontal assault on our free speech. Mr. Richards did not yell "Fire!" in that crowded club, he ripped into some ill-mannered, foul mouthed cretins by making the unfortunate decision to stoop to their level rather than take the high ground and act like an adult. There is no case to be made that Mr. Richards committed a crime, either civil or criminal, but Gloria Allred seldom takes a case she is afraid of losing, so soon we won't be able to argue with someone for fear of being sued. The founding fathers must weep with broken hearts to see the results of their "Great Experiment."

Richards vs. The Heckler
The sound is poor and the visual is worse but if you are interested in the actual audio/visual recording of this incident go to:

http://us.video.aol.com/video.index.adp?mode=1&pmmsid=1772645

I agree with most of these posts
I posted this on another column but think it needs to be here----

a comment on Sean Hannitys radio show I thought was right on, we are slammed with this gangsta rap saying n***** over and over and in any comedy club or comedy network you hear the same word over and over .
Cars pull up to you with their speakers so loud you know the occupants are going to lose their hearing shouting the same n***** word.
How is this not going to get into your subconcious when you are hearing it all of the time.
Let the African-American community clean up their language and not endate the public with these words and maybe the public will no longer use them.
I do not fault Richards for striking out at rude behavior these young men were as much at fault as he was.
This PC world has made everyone a victim, when are we going to stand up and say "no more" act like men and women and take responsibility for your actions.
I too would like to see all of the heckling and not only Richards comeback.

Gloria Showmethemoney ,is going to do her best to get as much as she can out of an actor, who is on the downswing, shame on her.

Off the hook?
I beleive Ms. Parker is on the right track. Almost from the dawn of time, people have picked on "differences" to make themselves feel "superior" to others. There are a multitude of "differences" between any two human beings with the possible exception of identical twins.

By and large, we decry "favoritism" simply because we are not the one getting "favoritism". I guess it begins with sibling rivalry at home then becomes "teacher's pet" in school and finally, as Ms. Parker points out, it becomes some label that gets involved in politics.

Politics is when someone in or wanting to be in government says "I'm here to help you" to the one who is not receiving "favorite" treatment. The do-gooders who believe they have all the answers to social ills. In the process, thousands, if not millions, succumb to the snake oil salesmen and tacitly admit that they ARE inferior because they can't survive unless someone "superior" helps them get what they want -- often with "wants" camouflaged as "needs".

Equal opportunity is not the same as equal
outcome. But that does not necessarily address this guy Richards. He "offended" someone, but I find nothing that says it is wrong to offend anyone -- except those who have been treated as "favorites" under the law. After all, most "jokes" are at the expense of someone else. There are "red neck", "blonde", "Irish", "rabbi", "lawyer" and a host of other groups who are the targets of jokes. And if a black comedian uses black jokes, the audiences laugh, but where are the "joke" or "offensive language" police during their performances?

Far too many of us have become "alert" to any possible "legally offensive" action against us or others like us and hope that by claiming to be offended we and our lawyers can extract a lot of money from the situation. Of course, a large portion of our society are excluded form being "legally offended", hence such folks want "favoritism" under the law removed. In other words, they and many others do not see favoritism under the law as constitutional. How can it be "constitutional" if all people are NOT treated the same "under the law"?

Cultural Taboos and Racism
.....Star...

.....I don't know if Richards is a racist or not...I define racism as believing that other races are inferior to your own...

.....I tend to see the confrontation in terms of human nature...when a person is insulted verbally and retaliates in kind he/she will use words that are intended to hurt his antagonist...in this case the word n*gger...

....the question arises... what if Richards had been black and used the same language?...in this case I don't think it would have been an issue and here is where the racial overtones come in...it is only because Richards is "white" that his words are considered offensive...

.....Here is where I agree with Jerubaal that Richards is being vilified because he blasphemed one of the sacred cows of Liberalism...Liberals have always used race as a divisive issue for political reasons...to quote Ms Parker..."to keep blacks on Uncle Sam's Plantation"...so naturally the Liberal Press is going to make a Federal case out of this incident and demand their pound of flesh...

.....Richards copious and demeaning apologies only make the matters worse....we still have free speech in this Country...nobody has a Constitutional right not to be offended...is Richards a boorish lout?...sure...but he has a right to be stupid.....COLOSSUS

update:
Hear something you don't like and ITS PAYDAY!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15855423/

Thats right, they want compensation(money).

Any white person
...who is offended by being called a "cracker" or a "honky" needs to get a life.

"Cracker" as an insult is especially weird, given its etymology in US slavery. By calling you a cracker, a black ignoramus is actually granting you racial superiority. Which you do not deserve, I might add...

And if there is a word with less literal meaning than "honky," I have yet to hear it.

Racism
"One result is animosity of blacks toward whites and whites toward blacks."

Thank you for putting that into print. There is without a doubt racism on both sides of the aisle. As the old saying goes you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink. The government can force political correctness on the masses but the only outcome I have seen is growing tensions and animosity.

I figure in this day and age nobody is owed anything based on their race. If I cannot earn what I want with my own hard work, I do not deserve it in the first place. I don't care what race you happen to be, if you are determined, you will overcome the obstacles in your way. Look at Bill Cosby, Oprah, Michael Steele and all of the other successful black people who got where they are because they worked hard.

But the one thing that does tick me off more than anything is when people like Howard Dean says men like Steele just aren't black enough to represent the masses. Or someone like Jesse Jackson running to the defense of the Duke Lacrosse accuser. I believe his statement was he would pay for her education and proceeded to qualify it with whether the incident happened or not. Not to mention Kanye West's "Bush doesn't care about black people" statement. Or maybe Charlie Rangle's, "there aren't enough rich white kids in the military" justification for a draft. As long as racism remains a political platform for Dems the animosity will continue.

Michael Richard's Outburst
What does all of this say about humankind? WE
are all sinners before a holy God. We all need
Jesus Christ Who offers forgiveness for our sin.
We need to go to Him in repentance. That's the
only way we can really live in peace with one another. Lawsuits, ordinances, panel discussions nothing else, will change the human
heart.

That's just the way it is.

C. Carr

I'm more disturbed by...
what Richards said after he yelled the n-word. He also called the rest of the audience "stupid emeffers" and told them "what lies beneath".

Yes, beneath the lovable character of Kramer, there is a short tempered racist who has contempt for anyone stupid enough to pay good money to watch him on stage.

Don't get me wrong. I don't excuse his racist rant. I don't excuse the heckler. But I see Richards as I used to see my father that would use racial slurs in traffic when he was cut off by anyone darker than he. He never yelled "you stupid anglo" when he was cut off by a white person.

But Richards is much worse because my father didn't think the very people paying his way were stupid to employ him, which Richards seems to believe.

more on this column and subject
As for the Dixie Chicks.........well I'm white and if I really called them what I really think (White Trash)..does that make me racist against my own kind? I really am ashamed of them.

I'm gonna retire!
Does anyone have the number for Ms Allred? I have been insulted so many times by so many people (black, white, hispanic, asian, etc.) that I know that I am owed some money. I mean, your first amendment rights don't give you the right to p*ss me off, right? I have the right to be fat dumb and happy and I'll sue you to protect that right.

clinton fan
Thank you for pointing out TH's superiority. Here, multiple cause/effect analyses can actually be discussed. If you read the posts, few give Richards a pass. In the real world, few actions come without precipitating events. We must determine, however, if the response by Richards was justifiable. Most seem to conclude that his response was not justified, however, it's nice to also conclude that those who tried to get their notoriety and "day in the limelight" by heckling a bonifide TV star were not guiltless.

Cintonfan...I (GULP) agree
It is amazing that this incident was so quickly turned on the hecklers. Like I posted elsewhere, stand-up comics have had to deal with hecklers since the genre started. If Richards wanted to get on stage and try to be funny, he had better be willing to deal with the heckling that comes when you're not funny. Comics deal with this by turning it back onto the hecklers, or they push on...not launch into racist diatribes because their itty bitty feewings got hurt!

Mike Richrds was wrong in what he did, period! And if you try to defend him, then answer me this: Where were all of you when Ron Artest went after the fan that threw a cup of beer and ice on him? If it is okay for Richards to call a couple of hecklers n*ggers for saying something he didn't like, then surely it was okay for Artest to go after someone that physically assaulted him...right?

Cramer versus Cramer
I bet nobody would have cared if the offending comedian wasn't worth what Michael Richards is. Deep Pockets draw many interested parties to the offense...

Her is what was said!
I searched the web, and this is about the best description of what happened.
Personally I think he got p!ssed off, and lot it.
So what!
If it had been me, I would have gone down and hit the dumb sh!t.
We all have our breaking point.
He simply does not have the intelect to deal with personal insult's.
To put this in perspective.
If you were doing your job, and a group of people were standing on the sideline's heckleing you about the quality of your job,how would you handle it as a man?

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Michael Richards said Monday he spewed racial epithets during a stand-up comedy routine because he lost his cool while being heckled and not because he's a bigot.

"For me to be at a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry," the former "Seinfeld" co-star said during a satellite appearance for David Letterman's "Late Show."

"I'm not a racist. That's what's so insane about this," Richards said, his tone becoming angry and frustrated as he defended himself in a clip from the show played on CBS before "Late Show" aired Monday night. (Watch Richards' apology and why Letterman's show is the wrong place to make amends Video)

Richards described himself as going into "a rage" over the two audience members who interrupted his act Friday at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Richards responded to the black hecklers with repeated use of the "n word" and profanities.

Jerry Seinfeld, who had issued a statement saying he was "sick over this horrible, horrible mistake" and calling it offensive, was scheduled as a Letterman guest Monday. He encouraged Richards to make a satellite appearance to talk about the incident, a CBS publicist said. (Watch why Sinbad thinks the apology via satellite 'is a piece of trash' Video )

"I'm sure Michael is also sick over this horrible, horrible mistake. It is so extremely offensive. I feel terrible for all the people who have been hurt," Seinfeld said in a statement.

Richards, 57, who played Seinfeld's eccentric neighbor Kramer on the hit 1989-98 sitcom and whose major credit since was a failed 2000 comedy, hadn't spoken publicly about his remarks before the "Late Show." Calls to his representatives were not returned Monday.

A video posted on TMZ.com shows Richards launching into the tirade after two black audience members started shouting at him that he wasn't funny. (Watch Michael Richards spew racial epithets to the audience at the Laugh Factory Video )

Richards retorts: "Shut up! Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f------ fork up your a--."

He then paces across the stage taunting the men for interrupting his show, peppering his speech with racial slurs and profanities.

"You can talk, you can talk, you're brave now mother------. Throw his a-- out. He's a n-----!" Richards shouts before repeating the racial epithet over and over again.

While there is some chuckling in the audience throughout the outburst, someone can be heard gasping "Oh my God" and various people "ooh" after Richards uses the n-word.

Eventually someone says: "It's not funny. That's why you're a reject, never had no shows, never had no movies. `Seinfeld,' that's it."

On Monday, about a half-dozen community activists gathered at the club to denounce Richards' remarks and demand an apology.

"These kind of comments hurt all of us," said protester Lita Sister Herron of the Youth Advocacy Coalition. She called Richards' comments "hate speech."

The protesters also demanded an apology from the Laugh Factory. At a news conference a short time later, club owner Jamie Masada expressed remorse and said Richards will not be back at the club until he says he's sorry.

"This is one thing we don't tolerate. ... I personally apologize. I apologize from my heart," Masada said Monday.

Richards did appear at the club Saturday, without incident, but that was because he had told the club he intended to apologize, according to a Laugh Factory statement Monday.

Calls to Richards' representatives were not returned Monday.

He refused to comment on-camera when reached by CNN, but the network reported he said off-camera he felt sorry for what had happened and had made amends.

Comic Paul Rodriguez, who was at the club, said he thought Richards' remarks crossed the line.

"Once the word comes out of your mouth and you don't happen to be African-American, then you have a whole lot of explaining," he said. "Freedom of speech has its limitations and I think Michael Richards found those limitations."

Rodriguez, also at the news conference, said: "I kept expecting a punch line. It didn't come."

Veteran publicist Michael Levine, whose clients have included famed comedians George Carlin, Sam Kinison and Rodney Dangerfield, called Richards' remarks inexcusable. Comics often face hecklers without losing their cool, he said.

"It's never seen anything like this is my life," Levine said Monday. "I think it's a career ruiner for him. ... It's going to be a long road back for him, if at all."

Daryl Pitts, a Laugh Factory audience member interviewed by CNN, compared the incident to another recent celebrity controversy.

"You think about Mel Gibson and what he said, and put that in the context of this, it's very upsetting," Pitts said, referring to Gibson's anti-Semitic outburst during his arrest for drunken driving.

Scrutiny of Richards' remarks likely will continue but won't match the level prompted by Gibson's behavior because Richards is far less famous, Levine said.

Comedian George Lopez told Los Angeles television station KTLA he thought Richards' lack of stand-up experience may have been a factor.

"You have an actor who is trying to be a comedian who doesn't know what to do when an audience is disruptive," Lopez said. "He's an actor whose show has been off the air, he shouldn't ever be on a stand-up gig."

I want to be clear, when I say that Mr. Richard's outburst was inappropriate, unacceptable and really just plain mean. Your comparison of him and Ron Artest, however, holds no water, and furthermore plays right into the hands of the Gloria Allreds of this country. Mr. Artest assaulted a man. When he was "assaulted" with the thrown beer(and I agree that was an assault) he was well within his rights to press charges. He was not within his legal rights to pummel the man about the head, face, and chest. (Whether he was morally within his rights is debatable, and I probably would come down in Mr. Artest's favor.)
Mr. Richards, on the other hand, expressed his constitutionally protected right to free speech. No matter how reprehensible the speech, it is protected.
To equate what Mr. Richards did to a crime puts Ms. Allred halfway home, and our free speech right halfway into the grave. When we can have our livelihood, and eventually our freedom of movement endangered by our words, we are a quantum leap toward a police state, run by the PC gestapo.

honkey
according to my co-worker, the word honkey was used to describe hungarian immigrants working in the coal mines of Pennsylvania.

I don't care enough to investigate...

racism
Once again, most people are misdefining what racism is. It correctly is defined as the belief that one race is inherently superior to another race or all other races. The Nazis were racists, because they believed Aryans were superior to Jews and other races.

Did Michael Richards profess the superiority of his race (whatever it is) to blacks, or did he indiscriminately call them n*ggers? If he is guilty of anything, its ignorance. His remarks were intended to be funny (Lenny Bruce hah-hah) but he fell short (kind of like Lenny Bruce).

What a stupid controversy involving stupid people.

Question: Is one a racist if he finds a specific race's culture to be inferior and/or dangerous?

Star, You are right on the Money!
This idiot does not speak for me or millions of other white Americans. He just got haeckled and handled it the worst possible way.
Demean the heckler, not the race, dude. DUH!!!
Why do we put these idiots on pedestals anyway?
They are not of superior intelligence. They are not war heroes. They are not sports heroes.
What are they? They are people who pretend to be someone else. Does that make them something special. I think not. I get so tired of hearing everyone talking about what George cLooney, Martin Sheen, or Tom Cruise have to say. They are also idiots. Let's quit elevating idiots to positions of importance when all they do is act. Another elevated bunch are singers. What gives Barbara Streisand, and her ilk the right to badmouth conservatives, Christians, Catholics, and Republicans, singing old songs through her enormous nose? Puulllease
If we quit elevating idiots to prominence, we will stop having these embarassing outbursts.

Everybody is a victim?
The only people who should be upset with what Mr. Richards said is...the people he said it too.
After all, the only people Mr. Richards was upset with were the ones heckling him. The way it should have been.
This jump-on-the-bandwagon, pack-of-dogs mentality amongst blacks is ridiculous. Richards was called a "...cracker-a**...", "F***ing white-boy", etc. Does this mean, that I am supposed to be offended? I hope not. Because I am not. The hecklers in the audience, should also be required to apologize, not only to Mr. Richards, but to the other audience members as well. These hecklers ruined the show for everyone.
Equality does not come from special treatment and appeasement of people who insist on being perpetual victims.

After thought: Al " never had a job" Sharpton and Jesse " the hypocrit adulterer" Jackson, should keep their big, useless mouths SHUT! But, I guess they can't. This is how they make their money. With phony concern about the plight of black folks.

def of racism
If you look at the video of M.R.'s comments(available on YouTube) you will see that his remarks strongly implied rascism; his commment that "40 years ago we would have had you hanging with a fork up your a**" implies that there is/was some inherent right/ability for the "white man" to torture and kill African-Americans. I think this fits the definition of an assertion of racial superiority.

He has no talent
I used to watch Richards when he was on Second City TV(SCTV).
I used to laugh mu A$$ off.
But he was a one trick pony, never did much of anything funny, other than to fall down.
Then came Seinfeld, I was already board of his act by then.
If you notice his character never grew on the show.
Which bring's us current, the guy has no talent, he has really never done standup before.
This event was created to raise money for a nonprofit group.
Then a few audience member's of equal intelect as Richards, heckle him during his entire act.
What did you expect from either side?
The heckler's got into a battle of wit's with an idiot.
And now the left use this as fodder to raise the racism issue once again, as if the entire population is on a par with these few nitwit's.
I was raised that when a man interfere's with your job, whether by word or deed, then he should expect the consequinces, a busted nose from a well placed KO.
But now we must be PC.
So much for manhood.

Racism
As for me, I believe racism arises when you do not see others as, "children of God". As far as I know, the color of a person's skin does not change when you go to heaven. Also. doesn't racial prejudice tell us something about ourselves? Looking at life from an eternal perspective enables one to overlook one's human impulses. Why allow your human nature to get the best of you as did Mr. Richards? Although some call his behavior on the stage "ignorant", I choose to call it immaturity. Being old in years does not translate into being wise for many people. In addition, Gloria Allred's pursuing of monetary damages for those who feel they were insulted is making a bad situation worse which doesn't say much for her maturity nor the defendants.

Kramer
"When I get a loan from the bank, the loan officer sheepishly asks if it's OK to report that I'm black. " - Star Parker

Hmmm the loan officers never sheepishly or otherwise asked if it was okay to report I'm White. Actually, I'm sitting her wondering why they would even need your consent to report your race on a form.
--------
Hey, I too would like to find that AllRed person and start my civil rights case for all the times I've been called White 'ho, White b--tch, Honky, Honky MF, Honky B--ch, MF Honky B---h, and my personal favorite "CRACKA." How about all the black guys crotch grabbing, topssing condems and threatening you as you walk by? Isn't that sexual harassment? Let's see, over 40 years of this type of behavior towards me should bring me quite a tidy sum. WHAT? Monetary gain is only for the African American? Whites need not even try? Sigh.

Considering the way whites are treated in this country because of their race, my only question is why such Kramer outbreaks don't occur more often.

Star, you glossed over the best point!
Allow me to add:

Kramer believes that there is some arbitrary “black guy” that you can call in order to cleanse yourself of any racial sins put on the world.

In turn, Sharpton(who happens to be that guy, I guess) ACCEPTS the call; as if to say, “yes Kramer, you have called the correct man”.

The entertainment here is priceless!

Star Parker
Wish I had said that.

Getting personal
Imagine you are Michael Richards. Some punk just called you washed up, a has been that's not funny and outside of riding Seinfelds coat-tails you're a nothing. You get pissed. Normally you would ignore the comments, normally you would brush them off with some witty counter, but this time this guy hit you where it hurts and you want to hurt him back. You don't know anything about this guy. You've never met him, you don't know what he does for a living, you don't know whether he's rich or poor, married or single. You know 2 things: 1) you want to hurt him back... bad 2) he's black. So, blinded by rage, you pull out the only word you can think of that will hurt him like he hurt you: the enword.

I'm not saying Richards is or isn't racist; but I highly doubt Richards thinks that whites are genetically superior to blacks. My guess is he wanted to hurt the heckler as much as the heckler hurt him. That's why I think hate crime legislation is BS as well, just because someone uses racial slurs in a beatdown doesn't mean the beating was racially motivated, it could just mean that the guy doing the beating wanted to hurt the person emotionally as well as physically.

The heckler and Richards both demonstrated a lack of kindness, goodness, and self-control. That's bad enough if you ask me, but our society doesn't care about any of those things, so our society pulls out the only thing it knows how to be outraged over: racism. This is totally juvenille.

Bad behavior begets bad behavior
If you heckle a comedian, you can expect to be embarrassed. I wasn't witness to the incident, so I cannot say what the hecklers may have said to cause a seasoned performer to overstep such a taboo, but I'm thinking it was probably bad. Maybe that "cracker" comment came before the other racial slur. Neither was right and neither was proper and both should be having their mouths washed out with soap, but we live in a country that allows free speech which means that both the heckler and Michael Richards have the right to say what they said. Having the right doesn't make it morally right, but then again, I don't think God would approve of Mr. Richard's comedy act to begin with.

Point here is that racism is wrong, but so is just plain bad behavior and there was plenty of it floating around there. One kind of bad behavior is no more reprehensible than another. We've just "colored" it that way!

Labels
Our society likes labels as a way of explaining things so you don't have to deal with people who might be individuals. So it is easier to speak of a Black man or Gay man than just a man. You can assign attributes to these categories either positive or negative and when most of them are negative then racist can justify his racism. To see a person as an individual requires you to really look a the person and think about them and thinking is not something that everyone likes to do as it is too much like work. We define someone by what they do for a living as to what they are. What are you means? What do you do to make money. In my area of Illinois if you are neither a Cubs fan or a Cardinal fan then there is something very strange about you that immediately draws suspicion.

Who to blame
Michael Richards cracked some jokes about blacks, implying that blacks are inferior in some way. Okay, he's racist, and he's to blame.

The hecklers' response seems to be based at least partly on the idea that blacks are protected from any racial insults coming from anyone of any other race. So why would blacks need such protection? Granted that many of them were enslaved for a couple hundred years, but the Emancipation Proclamation was signed 140 years ago, and we've had Affirmative Action in force for about 40 years, so get over it. I know that there still are some racist whites in this country, but statistically, they're disappearing. That some blacks (apparently) prefer the free ride the government gives them in the name of Affirmative Action, rather than working hard, making their own progress, and making it something they can be proud of, is wrong, and they're to blame. Whether they are racist or not, I don't know: maybe they believe all races to be equal, and they just see all of us white Americans as suckers, from whom they can get a living while they do the work of couch potatoes.

Affirmative Action assumes that members of _any_ minority, including blacks (any minority except white Christian males) is "handicapped" - I can't think of a better word for it - and therefore government has to give them a "hand up", which has come to be more like a handout. Ex, "You can't possibly get admitted to a high-class university unless we give you extra points to make up for your test scores. We KNOW that your test scores are going to be lower than white kids' scores, BECAUSE you're black." (I think this fits the definition of racism, but as far as I can tell, this is the only justification for Affirmative Action.)

The MSM are to blame, too, for blowing this out of proportion, and as nearly as I can tell, it's because they also think that blacks are inferior and need this protection. In this election year, they pushed hard for keeping Affirmative Action in force, moaning about how terrible it will be for all minorities if Affirmative Action is repealed. Thus they betray their own racism, while they avoid even using the word "racism", as if it were one of those words that could provoke the FCC to yank a radio/TV station's license.

racism
I have never seen it better said and more truthfull. Thank you Star.

Clinton Fan and Flagwaver
You two might want to read other folk's comments a little more closely before you dispute them. Nobody here is defending what Michael Richards said, because frankly it's indefensible.

But if we want to talk about that indicident in moral terms, as Ms. Parker wants to do, we have to look at both sides of the issue. The "hecklers" started the whole incident by yelling insults at a guy who was volunteering his time and taking a risk by doing work he doesn't normally do. This is the kind of thing that happens at charity events like this. What kind of morality--or lack of it--made these two jerks think this was appropriate behavior?

Living in Southern California I know actors who have done stints like this. They'd never done a day of standup in their lives, but got hold of some material, went up on stage, and performed. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't (Pauly Shore, whom I don't know, did a set as part of a Jerry Lewis telethon and he was absolutely awful). Fortunately, no one in the audience saw fit to yell insults at them.

And the "hecklers" are kind of putting it back on themselves. Or have you not heard that they've hired busybody attorney Gloria Allred, and are talking about a lawsuit--over something they themselves started.

As for Michael Richards being a has-been or not having any talent, let me tell you--doing a convincing portrayal of a character and making it funny is damned hard. I can't do it, and I doubt anybody else here can do it either. He hasn't had another show since Seinfeld? I know some extremely talented people who've never had anything more than a guest role or two--let alone a ten-year run on a major hit.

I'm not in any way excusing what Richards said. But I don't think we should excuse those two jackasses in the audience, either.

If Ms. Parker wants to talk about the issue in moral terms,

Honky
My understanding of this has to do with prostitution: a white man drives his car to one of the poorer (black, of course) neighborhoods in town, rolls the window down, holds a fistful of money out the window as he drives slowly around, honking the horn (that's why he's called a "honky") to get attention. When a black approaches, he starts negotiating the price. Obviously, this is despicable and vile - to say the least! - behavior on the part of the white man.

Despicable and vile because of the racist aspect, AND because we're talking about prostitution. I don't think about this much; I've never done it and no one I know has done it - as far as I know. Still, when I do think about it, it turns my stomach.

TexasLady
Your comment: "Let the African-American community clean up their language and not endate the public with these words and maybe the public will no longer use them."

You should not categorize this language as "AA" language. Growing up and even now my parents do not use this word. My sibling and I were not allowed to use this word. Family members did not use this word. (At least not that I'm aware.) Unfortunately I think this type of language among some black Americans (both of my parents were born in this country and so was I so I don't consider myself AA) and AA is actually "spun" as the norm...but it isn't the norm. That's like saying whites need to clean up their hateful language against blacks because a few ignorant people say hateful things. I would never classify the actions of few ignorant people as a racial norm. These things get classified this way because they are "sensationalized" and broadcast to get a reaction.

None of the black Americans or AA's in my social circle uses this vile word to refer to one another. Although I can see how public glorification of this word can infest all races and desensitize people to it's hurtful past; it is not as widely accepted amount the black community as some may think.

I've never understood the "comedic" value of this word. Anytime I've watched a stand-up with the liberal use of this word, I've oftentime scratched my head and had a blank stare on my face. Just didn't get the connection. Hopefully this incident will make people not feel the need to use this word. Although I think it is a person's right to say whatever they want. However, I think they should be willing to accept the backlash. Free speech is just that...free speech. Not "free speech" with an asterisk.

MStone and Micheal
As much as I respect your opinion (and I think it's very well thought out), I also believe racism doesn't come flowing out of you unless it dwells within you. The hecklers were wrong, but being a comedian and not expecting to be heckled during a bad performance is equivalent to being a professional football referee and not expecting to be booed after making a bad call against the home team. Every respected stand-up comedian realizes that being heckled (when not funny) is a risk that comes with the territory.

What's really disturbing is that Richards didn't resort to comedy to deal with his verbal attackers. Constantly shouting "he's a ni**er" over and over hardly qualifies as comedy. And where's the humor in "Shut up! Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f------ fork up your a--"? Was there no other way to ridicule his attackers without demeaning a whole race of people?

And my white brothers and sisters, please understand that regardless of how mad you get, that word is simply off limits to you. I hear women (both black and white) refer to themselves affectionately as bit@hes, hos, and heffers and not get mad at each other. But I also realize that if I do it (being a male) I could be cut into several different pieces. Just as women may feel that they share a bond that allows them to engage in otherwise derogatory banter like that, the same is true for African-Americans when it comes to the N-word. If white people would stop trying to justify instances in which they can use the N-word and realize there's never a reason for a white person to use it, then we (both races) could turn our attention to more pressing problems.

BTW Micheal, after reading your 4:20 p.m. post, I'm thinking maybe you should give comedy a try. If these white drivers were searching out prostitutes in the poor white section of town, or maybe the trailer parks, how were they then referenced?

Can we also agree
that Richards was caught in a situation where it takes wit and/or humor to get out of a hecklers grasp!
He has neither... I've heard little about his actual lack of talent-
The character Kramer was Jim Ignatowsky (sp) from Taxi-so Kramer wasn't even original!
Comedians everywhere should be a proud bunch; discussing how difficult a profession this really is.
If we concentrate on talent, this story will go away. Obviously, it's the race matter that gives it legs.

Racist vs bigot
I define racist as culturalist. After all, have you been to Jamaica or Peurto Rico? How about Mexico or India? Certainly skin color shouldn't the major factor in determining "race".

Acknowledging that there are differences between "races" shouldn't be a crime- as much as the PC pool would like to make it one. This leads me to:

Bigotry- which I define as discrimination, often based on "racial" stereotypes.

Clintonfan- while I agree with you that whites are never going to get a pass for using the n-word, or men calling women derogitory names to women use amongst themselves, this is discrimantory behavior and shouldn't be tolerated. So much for a colorblind and equal society.

Uncle Max and others....
So let's review what happened immediately after the Chicks' statement was made public - country stations refusing to play their music, "fans" crushing their CDs; even now, their album is selling, but it's being marketed in an entirely new genre. My point was that the Chicks did pay a price for their free speech, and Richards is paying too. Consider also that if those country music fans did not get in such a public uproar over Natalie Mains' statement, then maybe the Chicks couldn't get as much mileage out of it.

But the Richards issue really boils down to this - no government can take away your right to use racist language. But really, are whites just dying to use that word so much that they seek any justification to do so? If blacks using it to describe other blacks is reprehensible, why then would a Caucasian want to use it? Do whites really desire to emulate blacks in this regard? Finally I'll reiterate: Richards has the freedom to be a complete ignoramus. And most of us have not only the freedom, but the responsibility, to call him one.

From a black man's point of view
1. Michael Richards is racist, plain and simple. It’s not him calling those men "nigg*” that makes me believe that. It’s the comment about "if this was 50 years ago you would be upside down with a fork in you azz." There is an argument to be made over the word "nigg*" and its use in American society. But what can explain him making reference to our horrible racial history? This was prior to be called a "cracker" also.

2. Him being heckled doesn't justify him making racist comments. Heckling and stand-up goes hand and for better or worse. I have lost respect for him not just because of his language, but also due to his lack of wit in dealing with it. Plus from what I understand a good part of the audience was black, does he really think they found that funny?

3. As in many cultures blacks have inverted a word that was used in a derogative manner towards them into a word of bonding. I have used the word and to be honest still uses it, although a lot less frequently than in the past. However there is a profound difference when a white person uses the word nigg*, versus when a black does. In American history it started out as a way for whites as a way to verbally demean a black person as much as possible. So when someone black hears that word from the mouth of an Anglo we think back to how and why white people have always used the word and that’s where the anger comes from. Its because we believe that not only are we being called a slur, but that person is also demeaning our entire race, approving of slavery and the oppression that came with it. We believe that because that is always how white people have used the word. Don't deny history. I don't know when or why blacks began to use the word, but it was never (ok, rarely) said in order to demean the entire race and approved of past injustices. Rappers today may say it every other word, but they don't mean it in that way, obviously Richards did.

4. Yes, black comedians say their own share of slurs against whites, but its evened out by their ribbing of blacks, Asians, Mexicans, etc. Comedians such as George Carlin have made fun of black people, but it was done so with wit and humor behind it. This guy Richards just went off on a hate filled tirade that he admitted lurked beneath.

Stick a Fork in Him
"It is absurd to compare what Richards said to what the Dixie Chicks said almost 4 years ago. Richards' career is probably over because of what hesaidd and the Dixie Chicks are riding high because of what they said."

The main difference, I believe, is that expressing a dissenting political opinion still is considered acceptable and noble in this country, but expressing racist opinions is (thankfully) not.

The Dixie Chicks' albums continue to sell as many people agree with them, but Richard's carreer may well be over because very few people will publicly agree with him. He's about as likely to get an acting job as OJ is.

And the "Cracker" comment was not made by the original hecklers, but by another patron who was insulted by Richard's racist rant. If he had been called a Cracker first, then his rant might have made a bit more sense. But seeing how Richards was the first to bring race into it, I see no possible justification.

He lost his temper, his mind, and his carreer all at the same time.

rjas
My point was not to defend Ron Artest, but that the same level of outrage has NOT been heaped on "Kramer". I well know that calling someone a n*gger is not the same as a physical assault, but it is an assault of a different kind. Unless you are black, and have been called that name by a person that is not black, you don't know exactly how it feels. It would be the same as if I called a Hispanic a spic, or a Jew a kike; it is hurtful and dehumanizing, period. There is no place at all for it to be used in a civil society, as it can never have a truly positive meaning.

Further, the point that both I and Clintonfan were making is that the conversation here quickly turned from the offender to the hecklers. It became a situation where the hecklers were being dragged through the mud for heckling an unfunny 'comic' and the actions of Richards were being minimized. Read some of the posts here and at the other thread dealing with this and see how many are saying "Yeah, he was wrong...but the hecklers started it." Maybe the hecklers called him some names in response to what he said to them, but there is no excuse for calling people n*gger and making reference to lynching because you got heckled at a standup comedy gig. Would anyone be going after the hecklers if Richards had said "60 years ago we would have had you roasting in a gas oven"?

Equality

Brothers we have to man up and take the hit on this one.

The following is speech by John Conyers in another context, but he could have been talking to those rappers and comendians, just as well, who use the N-word:

"In the speech, Conyers looked back to civil-rights days, when corrupt judges sometimes twisted and ignored the law. “We did not wage that civil rights struggle merely to replace one form of judicial corruption for another,” Conyers said. “The principle of equality requires that a black public official be held to the same standard that other public officials are held to.…Just as race should never disqualify a person from office, race should never insulate a person from the consequences of wrongful conduct.”
***

The principle of equality requires that black rappers and comedians be held to the same standard that Richards is held to.

All this talk about the N-word being used as a "term of enderement," and as "greatings," among friends is inconsistent.

How can we bar someome else from using the word and then use the word ourselves?

And how can we require Richards to apologize and not require it of ourselves?

That is intellectually dishonest and undermines our own credibility.

Get rid of the word altogether.

Paul Mooney has the right idea, and has begun a movement to get the entertainment industry to voluntarily give up the word.

Richards has aplogized, now the rappers and comedians who use the N-word, should apologize to the nation for unleashing this vile word and making it appear as if it was OK to use it.

Winfrey had this conversation with the cast of "Crash," and told them, Ludacris included, that they, the rappers and the entertainment industry in general, should stop using the term. They ignored her.

Now this. Hope they now take heed.

You don't have to. Honkey originated in Illinois. Legend has it that white guys would drive by black wh0re houses in the red light district and honk their horns. They became "honkies".

Hungarians in Western Pennsylvania coal mines were "hunkies".

Don't start unfounded etymology.

Star Parker saying "comedian" is rascist
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought I read that "Dr" King was an adulterer and fornicator and somewhere near a terrorist. I guess I could check it out on Google. Yes here it is on Google:
Quote:
What is not mentioned in this article is that Martin Luther King was having sex with three White women, one of whom he brutally beat while screaming the above mentioned quotes. Much of the public information on King's use of church money to hire prostitutes and his beating them came from King's close personal friend, Rev. Ralph Abernathy (pictured above), in his 1989 book, "And the walls came tumbling down."

So how can you quote the great "Dr" King" Mrs Parker? I guess we can't hide from Google!!!

REVERSE RACISM
I have several black children in my Sunday School class and they are adorable and well behaved and their parents are lovely. I have black neighbors and they are lovely. I have no problems with black people as a race. I was always taught that racism was wrong and have always believed that black people are just like me, only a different color. Like most white people I feel terrible about the horrible things that were done to blacks before civil rights.I think most white people my age (50) were raised to feel the same. In the final analysis though, I didn't do those things and I'm tired of being made to feel it's my fault and that I should feel apologetic. My ancestors were very poor and never owned slaves and even if they had, I would not condone it now. Unfortunately, I think many black people still feel like it's my fault and are raised to hate white people. I have stopped being friendly or helpful to black people (outside of church or people I know) because I usually get a hateful comment or curled lip or am made to feel unsafe. I don't want to feel this way but there is a distinct reverse racism going on in this country. Let's be honest! There IS racism in this country, but it's coming from the other side now.

The movie "Blackboard Jungle" 1955....
Had a scene where teacher Richard Dadier (Glenn Ford) uses the terms M*ck, Sp*c, and N*gger as a lesson what NOT to say. If you watch Michael Richards rant, after he says "He's a N*gger, it's a n*gger...". He then says "It shocks you, it shocks you....." I may be going out on a limb on this, but maybe HE was trying to teach the hecklers that same lesson. But he never got a chance to finish making his point.

Whites and others= 43 Blacks = 0

Where is the reverse discrimination?

There are 50 governors

Whites and others = 49 Blacks = 1
***

Where is the reverse racism?

Who runs the Fortune 500?

Whites = 497 Blacks = 3

Where is the reverse racism?

What percentages of teachers are black or white, per USA Today?

Whites and others = 95% Blacks = 5%
***

Where is the reverse racism?

As of October 2006, white men make $764 per week on average, and black men make $610.

This means black men make 79.8% of what white men make.

That's like Jeff Gordon being allowed to run 200 mph at the Daytona 500, and Jimmie Johnson, the NASCAR points winner, being allowed to run only 159.60 mph, and still be expected to win.
***

Where is the reverse racism?

There are 124,334,000 whites in the civilian labor force, and 17,368,000 blacks as of October 2006.

If whites stood still, added no more jobs, and blacks gained one million jobs per year, it would take us 124.33 years to catch up, or until year 2130.

So much for Affirmative Action. Give my a flying break!!!
***

For those conservatives who believe there is a mythological "reverse discrimination," what did you or your parents personally do to stop the real forward discrimination against blacks, before the term reverse discrimination was made up?

Name one conservative who spoke out against the slaying of Emmit Till, the bombing of the 4 little girls, and stood by us when we were catching fiery _ell, in the 50s and 60s.

Bill Buckley?

William Rehnquist?

Pat Buchanen?

Rush Limbaugh?

Newt Gingrich?

Post the article. Let the world see it.

Anybody can stand on the sidelines when the bombs have stopped dropping now in 2006 and lipoff; and say how bad it used to be.
***

Before Affirmative Action what was the excuse for denying blacks then?
***

If you are against Affirmative Action, will you lead a crusade against legacy preferences, as your side led a crusade against affirmative action?

Where is your side's California Legacy Prop 209?

Where is your side's Michigan Legacy CRI?
***

How many blacks are on your executive team at your work?
***

For those who claim reverse discrimination, that's like allowing, a criminal kidnapper, who has been caught and locked up as a remedy for his crime, to claim "reverse kidnapping," because law enforcement has locked his sorry butt up.

To the contrary, your side still has a strangle-hold on this country and economy.

"This guy Richards just went off on a hate filled tirade that he admitted lurked beneath."

That's why I can't give him a pass, and why I don't believe his apology one bit.

In fact, the ONLY reason he apologized is because:

A. He found out it was out on Youtube
and
B. The new Seinfeld DVD hit the stores at about the same time, so there was damage control to do on Jerry's part. I'm sure Seinfeld had to drag him into apologizing.

"I'm not a racist". My azz. Now take your millions, go home, stay off of my TV screen, and STFU!

There are more than 194 million non-hispanic whites in America and a mere 36 million blacks, so whites can elect whomever they choose.

I will tell you what my parents did, they voted for republicans who voted in larger numbers to pass civil rights laws.

Republican party was created to oppose slavery.
Republicans voted in larger percentages to pass civil rights laws.
Republicans put the first non-white attorney General, first black Secretary of State(2), Supreme court Justice, and Education Secretary.

So why aren't you a Republican?

Your assumptions all lie in the fact 'white people are bigots'. Sorry that is not the majority of cases, and it makes you just as much a bigot as those you are smearing.

When similarly compared white and black males(equal education) blacks usually EDGE OUT WHITES. How many black men or women have run for President/Vice President?

Bennett and Gingrich were 12 years old in 1955. Why would they be writing about Emmit Till?

Stop making excuses, you have all the tools you need to succeed.

Get rid of the high percentage of school dropouts and unwed births and then talk to me about 'racism'. Its a lot higher than it was in 1950.

Get the chip off your shoulder about your struggle with white bigotry and see to your own house before accusing the rest of us for your lack of achievements.

It's Just a Word

.....Years ago George Carlin had a bit about words that could not be said in public...they were all profane and his act was all about repeating them out loud...his point was that they were just words and no matter how offensive to ones ears...they did not cause physical harm...sort of like the childhood chant of "sticks and stones"...

.....n*gger is just a word...it is in the dictionary... it is a derivation of the Spanish word negro... meaning black...so one could say that is is a slang word for black...

.....If the word has become so toxic...so radioactive....then maybe it shouldn't be used by anyone...to say that it is OK for blacks but forbidden to whites is ridiculous, rank discrimination and a violation of free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment.....COLOSSUS

Postscript: Black Knight...Republicans nominated Michael Steele for governor of Maryland...75% of blacks voted against him...your statistics on the scarcity of black politicians proposes that the fault lies in the bigotry of whites....in this case it was the ideology of blacks that kept Steele from being elected...your posts reveal a deep seated resentment of whites that twists your logic...get counseling Black Knight...all that pent up hostility cannot be good for you.....COLOSSUS

Turn that leaf over. Are you also then admitting that they also voted for these kind of Republicans?

Richard Nixon with his racist Southern Strategy;

Ronald Reagan with his racist Welfare Queen ad to blame black people, eventhough whites are the majority on welfare;

Bush41 with his racist Willie Horton ad;

Jesse Helm's fear-mongering racist ad to make it appear as unqualified blacks are taking jobs from qualified whites;

Democrat later Republican Strom Thurmond said this: "I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the n----r" race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches."

Those Republicans who voted for the Civil Rights bills were moderate to liberal, the kind that Ronald Reagan, Conservatives, and Rush Limbaugh hates today.

A Democrat appointed the first black Supreme Court Justice, Lyndon Johnson, Justice Thurgood Marshal.

***

I never said ever that all white people are bigots, all I said was that reverse discrimination is a myth; and presented facts to support that.

In fact I respect one of the greatest white Americans, President John F. Kennedy, who said this:

"This is not a sectional issue. Difficulties over segregation and discrimination exist in every city, in every State of the Union, producing in many cities a rising tide of discontent that threatens the public safety. Nor is this a partisan issue. In a time of domestic crisis men of good will and generosity should be able to unite regardless of party or politics. This is not even a legal or legislative issue alone. It is better to settle these matters in the courts than on the streets, and new laws are needed at every level, but law alone cannot make men see right."

Kennedy believed in promoting the highest common denominator. Today's republicans believe in promoting the lowest common denominator. See RNC Tennessee ad against Harold Ford, for example. That's why I'll never be a republican.

Do you also respect Kennedy, this great American?
***

I know in your universe, anyone who states the facts, and does not believe as you do, is a bigot.
***

"When similarly compared white and black males(equal education) blacks usually EDGE OUT WHITES (DM)."

That's an opinion not supported by any facts; and anyway it would take blacks 124 years to edge out whites, if whites stood still; which is never going to happen.

Don't get it twisted. Don't blame shift this to blacks.

There are more than 194 million non-hispanic whites in America and a mere 36 million blacks, so whites can elect whomever they choose.
***

Republican Florida Governor-elect Charlie Crist got 18% of the black vote. Steele got, per your numbers, 25% of the black vote. George Bush got 8%.

All three have conservative ideology. Two won. One didn't.

First Steele was a republican then he advertised on bumper stickers as a democrat; all over the map. That's on Steele, not the Black electorate.

In addition, in most schools:
91-100% = A
81-90% = B
71-80% = C
61-70% = D
Below 61% = F

Even if Steele had won, 2 out of 50 = 0.04%, is still a dismall "F."
***

"your statistics on the scarcity of black politicians proposes that the fault lies in the bigotry of whites (BBD)."

No, my statistics say that after 230 years, since the signing of the Declaration of Independance, from 1776 to 2006...2,760 months, 83,950 days that America can't find the time to elect not one Black President or VP?

Not nary one black person has been deemed worthy, in all that time? Give me a flying break!!!

You decide what it is and let the world know.

Pretty sorry record whatever the reason.

Hannity can rant 4 hours per day.

O'Reilly can rant 4 hours per day.

Bennett hours per day.

John and Ken hours per day.

But that's OOOOOOOOOOOOOKAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY!!!

But as soon as I present the facts and disagree with these guys, then I have to some how have a deep seated hatred of whites. Stop the garbage!!!

That took 30 seconds to track down.

I am sure you will tell me Sowell made up those statistics. Are you saying its ok to steal my money because blacks aren't getting educated fast enough?

"I guess Buckley and Rehnquist were 12 years old too. Where are the articles that Rehnquist, and Buckley wrote?"

So because they didn't write on that killing, that means they condoned it? That justifies you smearing their character? How petty and ridiculous.

The willie horton ad was relevant. Dukakis signed the prison furlough law which allowed Horton to rape and murder a mans wife in front of him. You are making it the racial issue when it is not.

"Whites commit the majority of crime and the majority of violent crime; so why does your side continue to say the opposite?"

In absolute numbers you are right, but only because there are more whites than blacks.

It doesn't matter though, as this is largely a cultural issue. People do what they believe they have to.
- I am saying get an education, get a job, get married and stay married and you will succeed.
- You are telling them they can't get ahead no matter what.
Do you believe you are part of the solution or the problem?

"Hispanics have a higher unwed birth rate than blacks, but somehow they are not attacked as visciously as blacks are. But that's OK. That's typical."

How are they attacked viciously? Thats just pathetic. Unwed birth rates are in response to silly diatribes such as yours which ascribes economic disparity to discrimination.

Hispanics aren't crying racist anytime they don't win the lottery either.

I still like Mike Adams definition of racist:
Someone who brings race into a situation where it doesn't belong. Sounds like you fit that definition.

ps.
Why do whites need a Prop 209?
Are there white affirmitive action programs?

I need further clarification to answer because on its face this makes no sense.

That little trick won't work. Changing the subject.

I made reference to to individual income, one on one, black men vs. white men, $610 to $764, apples to apples, the same hard work, working the same hours.

Sowell is talking about household income.

But that's ok, I'll comment on Sowell's ideas.

Sowell says:
"Yet there is such a heavy vested interest in the notion that American society is grossly unfair that statistics concentrate overwhelmingly on what percentage of households get what percentage of the total income -- with very little attention to the per capita income that shows how the average American's standard of living is rising. For example, this Census publication, with dozens of pages lavished on income disparities, mentions in one brief sentence that the real per capita income of whites rose 13 percent from 1989 to 1999, while the real per capita income of blacks rose 24 percent during that same period.(TS)."
***

In 2002 the rightwing trumpeted that blacks had attained the level of middle class at $30,000. They were dancing in the streets.

But what they failed to mention is that whites attained the $30,000 level in 1976.

Only in conservative circles is our remaining 30 years behind considered a landmark event. Give me a flying break!!!

End disparity now!!!
***
Let's take one more on Sowell.

Again, Sowell says:

"Rising rates of intermarriage and the widespread popularity of black and other minority public figures like Oprah, Colin Powell and Tiger Woods makes it hard to keep pretending that things are still the way they were back in the days of the Selma marches and the Birmingham bombings (TS)."
***

For every rise in rates of intermarraige, there is a corresponding rise in parents who will do anything, kidnapping included, to prevent their daughters from marrying and having children by blacks:

September 20, 2006

BY KATHARINE WEBSTER

SALEM, N.H. -- A Maine couple accused of tying up their 19-year-old daughter, throwing her in their car and driving her out of state to get an abortion were upset because the baby's father is black, a Maine sheriff said Tuesday.

Katelyn Kampf, who is white, told Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion that her mother ''was pretty irate at the fact that the child's father was black, and she had made a number of disparaging remarks about that,'' he said.
***

With respect to Oprah, Colin and Tiger, scientest will tell you that self-selected people, no matter the race, will rise no matter the odds. This proves nothing about the average black.

In addition 3/36,000,000 blacks = 0.0000000083%

Only is 83 billionths of a percent a big deal in conservative circles.
***

Mr. Sowell is a brilliant man, but the holes in his arguments are self-evident.
***

I'm not saying that Sowell made up the statistic; I'm saying that Sowell is very good at spinning a yarn.
***

I'm not saying that they condoned the killings, I'm saying show me where conservatives stood on the side of blacks when bombs were falling on our heads.

I'm not smearing their character, I'm saying that they don't admit that America's race problem is a two sided problem, personal responsibility on our part, and the governments part: to be fair, set a level playing field as Kennedy recognized:

"As I have said before, not every child has an equal talent or an equal ability or an equal motivation, but they should have the equal right to develop their talent and their ability and their motivation, to make something of themselves (JFK)."

And:

"We have a right to expect that the Negro community will be responsible, will uphold the law, but they have a right to expect that the law will be fair, that the Constitution will be color blind, as justice Harlan said at the turn of the century, (JFK)."

Kennedy says it is a shared responsibility; conservatives say it is all on us.

***

Keep denying that Willie Horton was a racist ad. You are about the only one in America, remaining, who says it wasn't.

In addition, it sent the wrong impression about blacks. Whites commit the majority of crime, 69%, and the majority of violent crime 59%.

"Among the four categories of race reflected in UCR arrest data, 69.8 percent of all persons arrested were white, 59.0 percent of persons arrested for violent crime were white, and 68.8 percent of persons arrested for property crime were white.

White juveniles comprised 67.5 percent of all juveniles arrested in 2005 and 67.2 percent of juveniles arrested for property crime.( FBIUCR)

***

Yes, you agree that whites commit the majority of crime, so why don't all the conservative commentators say so. They never do and I've been listening for 40 years.

In fact I'll do it:

Total Arrests: 10,189,691 : FBI UCR 2005:Table 43

whites = 7,117,040 arrests

blacks = 2,830,778 arrests

That only took 1 second.

Oh and by the way, can you tell me why if we commit 39.77% of the crime, why from 45-65% of us end up in prison?

Wouldn't you think that in a fair criminal justice system we would be 39.77% of those jailed?

I'm not telling them they can't get ahead no matter what, I'm telling them that if it they were 100% perfect it would not make any difference.
***
The majority of us do get an education. A good percentage of us do work hard and have jobs. We are woafully lacking in marriage. We have our patholgies that we need to work on. I have never denied that.
***

Attacked viscously: You never read the right wing, Thermstrom, D'Sousa, Murray, with regard to black pregnancies, crime, education, and how they attack blacks? Suggest you do so.

They don't just report the facts, they spin it not to try and assist like Kennedy, but to skewer.
***
Just look around you. Millions of Hispanics marched in the streets, just last year; all over the country.

Reagan minions screemed bloody murder over a TV movie.

Clinton minions did the same thing.

Muslims marched by the hundreds of millions all over the world, over a cartoon.

Every nationality screems bloody murder when their ox is being gored.

This is not unique to blacks; yet the right wing has you believing that we are the "only ones."
***
No, you are about 387 years too late with that race card thing; and I'm not a pilgrim.

***
Yes, there are hundreds of white affirmative action programs:

Legacy preferences
Tennis preferences
Swimming preferences
Rural preferences
Lacrosse preferences
Band preferences
Bowling preference
Horse team prefernces
Scull team preferences
Archery team preferences

Just to name a few.

If you are against affirmative action, lead a crusade against white preferences, just like your side did against affirmative action.

Or just get your side to lead that crusade.

You'll probably never see this but your reply to my post about the dc was a good one.

When they made the remark they lost a goodly amount of their "country" audience. That's life - that's the way it goes. (I for one don't believe it was an "offhand" remark.) As a result they became the victims of a boycott, or if you want you can call it censorship - economic censorship. There's nothing wrong with that. Because they expressed opinions that people didn't like those people didn't buy their CDs or go to their concerts. There is nothing wrong with that.

But now - almost 4 years after the 'offhand' remark they have become the beneficiaries of that statement. EVERY piece written about them has that statement as a starting point. They have new legions of fans who are mostly lefties who ordinarily look down their noses on country music. Their publicists are smart people who know how to market the product and as a result of that their latest release attained some mythical mark within a week of its release. There are any number of pea-brained columnists who urge their equally pea-brained readers to buy the dc's latest offering and now they even have a movie and what do you wanna bet they will keep beating the horse (although it died a few years ago) and continually posing (showing lots of leg) as embattled artists, yada yada yada.

They made that statement almost 4 years ago and it can be argued that they are doing better financially now than before the the statement. Where do you think Michael Richards will be 4 years from now? That is the point I was trying to make.

Let me end this opus with 2 smart a** remarks and then I'm going to bed.

1) Follow the money

2) Can you say "marketing ploy" boys and girls?
