Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"A Clean Start. Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, spent much of the campaign season vowing that if her party took control in January, the first order of business on day one would be ethics reform. It was a smart selling point to a country sick of Republican abuses. It looks even smarter now that the Democrats have won."

Thus the New York Times editorialized the day after the great Democratic take-over.

Now, barely two weeks after the elections, at least some folks have got to be slapping their forehead, realizing they're watching the same lousy movie they walked out on 12 years ago.

Pelosi's opening act, a failed attempt to install ethically challenged John Murtha as the new Senate Majority Leader, leaves little doubt that for her, the real stuff of ethics and statesmanship is favors, payback, personal loyalty above national interest, and, above all, the personal accumulation of power.

I mean, here's a guy, Murtha, called by one reporter "a master of pork-barrel spending," with ethics problems going back 25 years, that the soon to be first-woman-Speaker of the House, wanted to be her second in command.

Now that House Democrats have repudiated Pelosi's push for Murtha and picked Steny Hoyer as their man, everyone is making nice. It was all for show, they say. Hoyer had the deal sewed up from the beginning. Now that we're past this little bit of unavoidable dirty business, we're all on the same page and ready to be those squeaky clean ethical beings that we promised we'd be.

Now Pelosi is opposing Jane Harman to chair the House Intelligence Committee, who even the New York Times says should be given the job, because she doesn't like her.

This is the new beginning? You have to wonder whether they'll have to install a scratching post by the Speaker's chair after Pelosi is installed.

I've gotten plenty of mail saying "Star, why are you defending these sleazy Republicans. Nancy Pelosi. Tom DeLay. What's the difference? Who cares?"

Here's my point, one I've made before.

The issue is about power. Again, Lord Acton's famous observation that "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

So-called ethics rules in government are as much show as Nancy Pelosi's election theme of fighting the culture of corruption in Congress. Any rule can be circumvented. Anyone with power will find ways to exercise it, use it to intimidate, and advance a personal agenda.

There is only one way to fight corruption in government and that's to scale down the scope of government and limit the control that politicians have over our lives and money. It's what the founders of this great country had in mind to begin with.

What are the prospects that this will happen in a Democratic regime?

Consider what our new leadership on Capitol Hill is going to look like.

National Journal, the popular and prestigious Washington weekly about government and policy, compiles a Composite Liberal Score, based on voting records, for every senator and congressman. A score of 100 would be a flawless liberal voting record.

Looking over the prospective committee chairmen in the new Democratic House, the average Composite Liberal Score of the chairmen of the 21 standing committees is 78.5. In the leadership we have Pelosi with a rating of 90.2 and Majority Leader-Elect Steny Hoyer at 70.7.

In the Senate, the average Composite Liberal Score for the prospective 20 committee chairmen is 77.4. In the leadership, we have Majority Leader-Elect Harry Reid at 78.2 and Majority Whip-Elect Richard Durbin at 86.8.

What are the chances that this regime who, on average, vote liberal almost 80 percent of the time, is interested in limiting the size of government?

Sure, the current Republican regime has been a disaster in limiting government growth. But at least there are some Republicans who oppose this. Find me a tax cutting, spending cutting, regulation limiting, privatizing Democrat. Good luck.

So, if there is a 10 percent chance of getting smaller government under Republican leadership as opposed to zero chance under Democratic leadership, I'm not indifferent, nor should any caring American be indifferent, to what party is in power. We need Republicans.

Now, here's the nation's to-do list for the next two years. First, limit the damage that the Democrats do. Second, find the real limited government Republicans _- Republicans like Jeff Flake and Mike Pence in the House, or like the governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford. Get these guys in charge so we can take back the regime and start doing the government downsizing work on which this nation's future depends.

my 2 cents
Good piece. It's two weeks since the election so let's stop arguing among ourselves about why we got our posteriors handed to us and start getting our house in order - what is left of it - for 2008. We already know what pinheads the dems are and now they have a 18 months to prove it for us to the rest of the country. Surely we have better things to do.

IOW - let's stop the name calling and get to work. Break's over.

In November of 1998 how many had heard of George Bush?

second most misquoted statement
"power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

That should read : "power *tends* to corrupt".

And money is not the root of all evil...

The reason Pelosi wanted Murtha
is the age-old Leftie technique of using people who are "off limits" for criticism, such as Military Veterans, handicapped people and women with baby carriages.

I have learned through long experience that these things do not necessarily give you character, but there is a cultural taboo among people of good intentions that prevent them from attacking these decoys.

There is no equivalant on the Right, with perhaps the exception of Mark Foley, who the Repub leadership propped up to look more inclusive. But the Leftie attack dogs proved that they have no restraint in regards to attacking conservaitves, even when it makes them look like hypocrites. They don't care because they have not defined themselves in regards to ethics, so they feel they can behave any way they want with impunity.

Jack Murtha is a horror of a human being and should be roundly criticized at every turn. Of course, the Lefties will whine; "Boo-Hoo, you're picking on a war hero! Waaaaaaaaah!" But we should answer them by pointing out their ruse.

Same with foot-in-mouth John Kerry who is trying to crawl out of the hole he dug for himself. Thank goodness we have all of that footage of him slamming the troops when he came home from Vietnam. Let the Lefties cry their crocodile tears about Mr. Kerry's purple hearts that he got by filing for them over every little scratch. We need to use the Freedom of Information Act to make public Kerry's medical records from that era.

Another related technique they use to shut us up is to complain in advance before we make an argument.

For example, they whine that we are calling them unpatriotic. So all the Repubs say; "we aren't calling you unpatriotic!"

Well, why the heck not?

The Lefties ARE unpatriotic, and it is about time someone says so!

Or how about the manipulation they used when the Lefties all started saying; "You better not politicize 9/11! That wouldn't be sensitive." Then they proceeded to use 9/11 themselves constantly like a dripping faucet.

We know the ploys of the Left. Why do we fall for them every time? We let them use out own standards against us continually.

We need to stop it and get tough.

And we need to continue taking back the media, the courts and the educational system.

Time to Start
As Uncle Max typed, "...let's stop the name calling and get to work. Break's over."

Now is the time to start looking for another batch of conservatives, like the ones who went to Washington 12 years ago. After seeing what happens if you go native they should remain faithful a few years longer than the current batch.

The break is over. Let you currnt congressman know that you are looking for a conservative replacement. He may just surprise you and wake up. If he doesn't you're already looking and that puts you ahead of the game.

I'm thinking we may be able to turn
some of the newly elected conservative "blue dog" Democrats into Republicans. It will become clear to them soon that keeping their campaign promises will be impossible while in the donkey party. Hopefully, some will switch sides when they have their reelection support cut out from under them by the liberal power-brokers.

Note to David M
Lord Acton left several memorable quotes. One appropriate to the occasion is: "And remember, where you have a concentration of power in a few hands, all too frequently men with the mentality of gangsters get control. History has proven that. All power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely." Not all politicians are favor trading crooks but they are in a distinct minority.

Does Anyone besides me...
get the feeling that "we the people" are being duped daily. Lately I have been having the distinct impression that ALL politicians are just playing the American public for fools. I keep getting this image of a dark, smoke filled room somewhere in the bowels of Congress where they go to slap each other on the back, trade big black cigars, and drink to their superiority, while lining their pockets with our dollars.

and I should add....
while lining their pockets with our dollars and playing Russian Roulette with our lives.

Mountain Rose...
...you are so right about the lefties being unpatriotic. Ever wonder why? Check out non-normie.com to find out why, as well as how to deal with them--not that you aren't doing a great job of skewering them already!

You all might want to check out my blog as well for something else we conservatives and sensible people should consider doing to get out of the squeeze being put on us by the non-normies at both ends of the spectrum (Demo-socialists and Islamo-fascists).

THINKING ABOUT THINKING TALKING ABOUT...
ANOTHER GREAT ARTICLE BY STAR PARKER.
DIDN'T WE USED TO HAVE A WAY OF COMMENTING ON THE OTHER COMMENTS TO OPINIONS IN TOWNHALL. FOR EXAMPLE IF I WANTED TO COMPLIMENT "MOUNTAIN ROSE" FOR A GREAT RESPONSE, I THINK I USED TO BE ABLE TO DO IT RIGHT UNDER ROSE'S RESPONSE. ROSE HAS PROBABLY MOVED ON NOW, NEVER TO RETURN TO THIS PARTICULAR COLUMN AGAIN. BUT FOR WHAT ITS WORTH, IT WAS A GREAT COMMENT ROSE. I AM LEARNING THROUGH COMMENTS/ARTICLES LIKE YOURS HOW TO IMPROVE MY THINKING. I USED TO HEAR THE THE LIBERAL COMMENTS YOU MENTION AND KNOW SOMETHING WAS WRONG AND FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHY. AND SO I FELT DISEMPOWERED, FRUSTRATED AND FUTILE. NOW I CAN SEE EXACTLY WHAT THESE POLECATS ARE TRYING TO PULL. SO THANK YOU FROM MY HEART ROSE.

Ending corruption
If congressional actions were limited to the powers granted to Congress by the Constitution, there would be much less room for corruption.

Treadmilljoe: Just a word of advice: Typing in all caps is considered impolite because that's how one designates that one is shouting.

Vigilance Works....In Time
I recommend constant surveillance on our politicians. Matt Drudge, DO YOUR JOB!!!
One encouraging sign is that atleast one of the major Dem blogs is working to expose the corruption-oriented Dems. Ahhh, if only we had done the same!!!

Quote
The love of money is the root of ...evil.

Where in the spectrum would you put Reid , Hastings, Kerry, Murtha??

Club For Growth
I supported the Club for Growth during the past election cycle in an effort to move the Republican party in the direction of fiscal sanity. Why do I never hear them mentioned by the world of conservative punditry? They seem to be exactly what we need.

This Article
Good piece. I heard alot of I will and I can and I will go to Washington and fix things if elected. Seems to me I heard this somewhere before and we ended up with a VERY great deal of Democratic lies! Like the "balanced budget" Whose government did the Democrats and Slick Willie balance the budget? It wasn't ours! Where are those 100,00 police officers? I've yet to see them? And where is all those programs to help us when the Democrats passed laws for them? Where did the money come from?
Yes, we were watching this same picture twelve thirteen years ago and the now the music and dialogue I heard coming out of the mouths of Democrats is the same that was playing a decade or so ago. Can this country stand to be taxed again like the Clinton Democrats did? Are the rich and wealthy going to pay the increased taxes and provide more employment with less profit margin? Where are all the jobs going to come from to pay for all these changes "I will change?" Again its the Democrats cashing in on the selctive memory and apathy of the American people. Yep again, also, wrap it up and put it in a new light and make the public think we have a "New" plan to correct things when its the same old crap! Stop and think america, we did you put the Democrats back when they made more of a mess of things than before? Was it because of the scanals and sex? Look a little deeper...the only difference between some of these corrupt lawmakers and others is some of them have covered their tails and trails better. They haven't gotten caught yet. corruption knows NO political party, only the outstreched hand to help keep it going.

Alarmed and active
The Dems are always shouting do this or do that but it usually turns out to be 'Do as I say, not as I do' I grew up in a Dem house and I think my mother would have voted for the devil if he ran as a Dem but today I think even she would be amazed at the gall of the majority of the Dems. Even F.D.R. is rolling over in his grave at the open stupidity of the Dems. The only thing that saddens me more is the low level of education of the American voters as to what they are voting on and the policy changes that will come with the people coming into office. Most young Americans have neither read nor understand the important papers of our nation and don't know of the history of the sacrifices of those who have gone before. As a poll worker for many years I was always alarmed at the number of people coming in to vote who would say that they didn't know who the people were and what the issues were but that they wanted to be sure and vote - they would just guess. With most people relying on the local paper and the national t,v, stations or the C(linton) N(ews) N(etwork) for their only portion of information with which to make decisions it forcasts a foreboding future. It becomes necessary for us to 'forward' to and talk about articles like this one with many of the people that we come in contact with. "Praise the Lord and pass the (information) ammunition: to paraphrase an old quote.

Poor Timing for Dems
Looks like the economy is slowing down and for voters in '08, Dems will reap the blame.
Will Bush and the Republican team of 2000 to 2006 accept the responsibility for the downturn to come?
Iraq is a mess and the Dems have taken over the janitorial duties.
I am forced to wish them success lest we suffer the consequences of the last 6 years of recklessness.

Saw a piece on 60 minutes
I saw a piece on 60 minutes a few weeks back about a young congressman from Arizona. Challenged the earmarks of everyone regardless of party. I'm not from Arizona but I would certainly like to see more of Congressman Flake and people like him. I wrote my congressman and senators, and was told in response how important earmarks were to the state. One was just re-elected, earmarks must work......

AHA! A way to articulate this at last!
"So, if there is a 10 percent chance of getting smaller government under Republican leadership as opposed to zero chance under Democratic leadership, I'm not indifferent, nor should any caring American be indifferent, to what party is in power."

Correct. But by voting Republicans out of power, the electorate has increased the odds of a future Republican majority promising to scale back government and delivering on some of it by an order of magnitude - right up to 100%.

I voted Republican in the election except for the RINOnator. However, any future Republican majority will be much better at delivering what we want. Or at least promising it. I know this, because no other kind of GOP will ever take power again.

OldCountryBoy
Earmarks are very important to any state. If a state doesn't bring home a fair share of earmarks, it pays for everyone else's with nothing for itself. That's NOT good, even if only an infinitessimal amount isn't wasted.

The only way to reform the earmark system is by a party-wide election promise. Each half of Congress must create a rule that no budget item the benefit of which flows primarily to a certain state or place within that state may be proposed by a member representing that state without a full floor vote on the individual item. It's called accountability.

Under that rule, California could not earmark for California, but would have to get New York to do it for them. And good luck with that. The only election bragging rights from such a situation would sound corrupt to anyone.

Earmarks
are wrong on principle. If enough voters punish unprincipled pols, earmarks will stop. If enough voters try to vote themselves rich with earmarks, we're history. We get exactly the pols we deserve. Its a bit hard on the worker bees, but its going on all the time.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.............
Why is the government spending taxpayer money(yours and mine) on abortion, alcholics, and druggies?? Why is the government (you and me) in the abortion business?? Why does Roe vs Wade mean the government (you and me) have to pay for abortions?? Why are druggies and alchoholics getting medicare benefits?? If people decide to throw their lives away on alchohol and drugs, why does the government (you and me) have to pay the price?? Until I start hearing a politician who understands the issue of personal responsibility, I will continue to vote against ALL incumbents!!
