Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

There's already plenty of punditry about what went wrong. What did the president and the Republican Party do and when did they do it.

Robert Novak summed up the consensus view of the Republican wipeout well, writing that, "opposition to the war and the president had produced a virulent anti-Republican mood."

My point of departure from most of the analysis that I've read would be to disagree that this election was about any single issue.

I think this election was about trust. Trust is the glue that holds relationships together.

The war, rather than being THE issue, was more a deal breaker.

It's like a failed marriage. It starts off with trust and hope. Then a lot of little things happen that create tension, disappointment, and disillusionment. Eventually, there is a deal breaker. Some incident that destroys any residual hope that things can be worked out, that you can rely on and trust the person with whom you once shared your dreams. That's the end.

I think this is what has happened with the relationship between our president and his party and the American people.

Americans hung tough with the president on Iraq for a good portion of these years that we have been embroiled there. Even after it seemed pretty clear that the initial intelligence that supposedly justified the war was wrong, we still hung tough with him.

But the ongoing death and chaos, with no clear and understandable picture coming from the administration about what the end of all this will look like, shook the nation's confidence.

This, coming with the nauseating string of scandals, abuses of power, undisciplined federal spending, and the failure of the president and his party to deliver on any of the major entitlement reform issues (Social Security, health care) or social issues (marriage amendment), broke the bond of trust.

Anyone knows that when the bond of trust is broken, any relationship _ political, business, or personal _ is over.

To paraphrase an observation once made by the great political philosopher F.A. Hayek, "If politics is the art of the possible, then great leadership is the art of making the impossible possible."

However, in order for any leader to reach for the impossible and bring it into the arena of the possible, he must have the trust of the people. They have got to believe in him, in his integrity, and his vision.

Leadership is hard to find. In my time, the only two Americans that I can think of that really had these characteristics were Ronald Reagan and Martin Luther King. They made the impossible possible and changed the world.

I believe these are unusual times when the need for leadership is particularly pronounced.

Great changes are taking place.

The very dangerous threat globally from Islamic extremists and terrorists is different from the types of threats we have faced before.

Domestically, the country is weighed down by dysfunctional systems we created in the last century at a time when many Americans thought that central planning had its place in our lives and when we were rich and independent enough to play these kinds of games.

Now a good portion of our population and economy is dependent on broken retirement, health care, and education systems.

We need to retool and replace the broken and the old with the new and dynamic.

We need a more deregulated health care market, private health and retirement accounts, and an approach to education that allows parents to choose how they wish to educate their children.

However, leading a whole nation to abandon the old and familiar and to step into the unknown and the new is no small task. It cannot be done without leaders who have vision, who have courage, and who, like Reagan, see the truth clearly enough, and believe in it deeply enough, that they will capture the trust of our people.

I haven't spent a lot of time talking about the Democrats because it is so clear that they still are the peddlers of the old and the broken. I have yet to read an analysis that defined this election as an affirmation of the Democratic Party.

We know about relationships that come on the rebound. It's just a matter of needing somewhere to go. But there's no substance and no future. The Democrats will soon remind us again about what getting government into our lives really means. Telling us what we should earn, what we should produce, who we can and can't hire, what the prices of things should be, what we can and can't teach our kids, etc.

Short of a complete transformation of the Democratic Party, if our country is going to maintain its standing as a great nation _ the greatest nation _ it will be under Republican leadership.

But it's not going to happen without real leaders. This is the challenge for the Republican Party today _ to re-articulate its vision and to re-establish the trust it has lost with the American people.

"I haven't spent a lot of time talking about the Democrats because it is so clear that they still are the peddlers of the old and the broken. I have yet to read an analysis that defined this election as an affirmation of the Democratic Party."

I found myself ignoring most of most of the columns written this past week. They seemed to me to be repetitions of each other.

Star has said something original and insightful and given us hope as well.

Now.....to find the leaders!!!

A lesson from 2004
It has been said that "when Republicans act like Conservatives, they win." I think there should be a clarifying correction. When Conservatives act like Republicans with loyalty, they win."

In the years preceding the 2004 election, the Republicans acted as conservative as they have during these last 2 years...but the results of those two elections were very different. Why?

In 2004, Bush and his merry GOP had the support and loyalty of the Conservative Media (which I adequently call the RINO pundits)...but in the 2 years since, the RINO press joined their Liberal counter parts in their negative bashing...

The pundits will tell you that 2006 was about the illegal immigration issue and pork spending...yet...

The illegal immigration issue has been going on since Reagan tried to give them unfettered amnesty. It was there after 9/11 and during those 3 years preceeding the 2004 Republican landslide.

There was just as much government spending--but no Reagan type deficit thanks to Bush's refusal to do a Reagan reversal of tax cuts--in those 3 years.

Why did these two issues become SO IMPORTANT that the RINO's press stopped emphasizing the positive and the real accomplishments of this administration and the GOP and joined their Liberal counter parts in blaming Bush and the GOP?

Why are they STILL blaming them.

Blaming Bush for being leader to ALL Americans not just those who agree with him politically.

Blaming the GOP politicians for being politicians who know that most voters aren't political idealist...they want THEIR Senators and Congressmen to get a piece of the Federal pie for THEIR roads and THEIR projects...and businessmen who fund campaigns want those who will help their industries: aka "pork spending".

Anyone who tells you differently is either ignorant or blowing smoke...and since the ex-lawyer talk show hosts are supposed to be educated and "smart", that leaves the latter.

Yes, I am still seething...for the GOP did NOT have to lose. Santorum and Hayworth did not have to go. We could have had a real solution to the immigration problem. We could have continued to bring the fight to the terrorists. We could have changed the Courts, protected property rights, define marriage, end the prosecution on Christianity and protected the Unborn.

We could have laid the foundation for a real and attainable Conservative Utopia.

The one, great thing Reagan gave Americans was a real belief in the possible.

It took but 2 years of constant negativity by the pundits (ironically aligning themselves with Reagan) to convince us that his party's efforts were worthless and not good enough.

Star,
I think that you defined the reality we must face now. The loss of power by the Republican Party was inevitable because of the incompetence of Party leaders, and the betrayal of conservative Republicans who voted twice to put George W. Bush in the Oval Office.

Republicans may be an endangered species. We have all heard about the way the Democrat Party has devolved into a Party controlled by radical, Bush hating, obstructionists. The Party that gave aid and comfort to the jihadists who are totally commited to our deaths. I think that is an accurate description.

The incompetence of Republicans manifested itself in the inability of Party leaders to achieve any semblance of Party unity or disipline. I do not believe the Party can survive with members so far apart as Olympia Snow and Tom Tancredo, as examples There are certainly others who represent the chasm that exists between Republican politicians.

I always thought that crap about a big tent was a crock. A tent should never be big enough to hold a Lincoln Chafee and a Ron Paul. It can't work.
The Republican Party can also not survive a back stabbing megalomaniac like John McCain, or a nut like George Voinovitch, just to name a couple of liabilities.

Perhaps even more threatening to the survival of the Republican Party is its aging membership. I am active in several Montana politicical organizations. All of the members are acutely aware that most of us could accurately be described as senior citizens. That fact concerns us.

On a more positive note, I am very pleased that young Republicans are increasing their numbers in the universities. Many of them are smart and energetic. I frankly have my fingers crossed as to whether they will grow into leadership rolls before the Party turns belly up.

Public schools are manufacturing new Democrats every day. Universities are finishing schools for radical, robotic thinking leftists. They are the foot soldiers for a Democrat Party that is corrupt and increasingly nutty, but time may be on their side.

I watched Democrat campaign signs spout like mushrooms where I live. There must have been a half dozen signs touting Democrat candidates for every one representing a Republican. I am thrilled to be able to say that here in the Bitterroot Valley we demolished the Democrats. Nevertheless, Democrats unseated Conrad Burns and sent their guy to Washington.

Star hit the nail on the head when she referred to broken trust. I don't trust George Bush as far as I can throw my car. That man is really going to hurt us before his last term expires. Nor do I trust the majority of the clowns who were not ejected in this election. Frankly, I don't see anybody on the horizon who looks good for President who has enough money to make a run.

As painful as I find it that conservative voters who stayed home helped usher in the rule of the dangerous Democrats, I know that come 2008 I will be absent if McCain is the candidate. As far as I am concerned it will be in God's hands, just as everything is.

The Media
I am seeing a lot of comment about the meaning and reasons for this election disaster, but very little about one of the main reasons for it. Everyone is giving reasons such as the disappointment of the war in Iraq, overspending in Congress, the scandles, etc., but I don't believe these were the root causes of the disaster - the root cause was that since the election of George W. Bush in 2000, there has been a determined effort by the mainstream media, newspapers, cable TV, any kind of publication controlled by the left, that constantly put down anything done by Bush and made Bush out to be Hitler. We're even seeing the Democrats now screaming about doing oversight now on why things went wrong during Katrina, the worst natural disaster in American history and of course, that was Bush's fault, as trumpeted by the media. Anyone reading this who is honest can't deny that a large part of the reason the American people turned against the Republicans was because of the constant drumbeat of the media against George W. Bush. The American people did what they were asked to do by the leftist media and now sadly, they will get the exact things promised by the left. Welcome to 1984, people.

uwcharlie
You make an excellent point. A large number of Americans believe "Bush lied" about - insert your pet cause here - , thanks to the constant drumbeat of the left and their willing accomplices in the media. And they have proven that if you repeat a lie long enough, it becomes the "truth."

While I think the administration went politically tone-deaf, nobody will ever convince me that GWB is the "liar" so many would like us to believe. It is not in his nature.

uwcharlie - Me too.
I think this was a victory for the newsies. I'm hoping it was their last.

The newsies have been mostly liberals for more than 30 years. Remember the famous Pauline Kael reaction to Nixon's 1972 landslide,"Everybody I know voted for McGovern!" (or words to that effect.)

The predictable moral and professional decay has set in. They now present forgeries as evidence to bolster their cases. They suggest, mostly by repetition, that there's no meaningful difference between "stem cell" and "embryonic stem cell" or between "limiting funding for stem cell research" and "banning stem cell research". If they did this on purpose, they'd be demagogues. As it is, I think they believe their lies.

Other issues may finally have tilted the balance. These issues ought not to be ignored. But we need some more conservative rich folks to buy some LARGE media outlets and to burrow into AP and Reuters. We can do a lot on the net, but we can't do it all.

Healthy Debate. . .
Above all lets keep this kind of dialog going amongst ourselves. We definitely do not want the drive-by media and the dem's telling us where we went wrong. It is for us to clean our own house. We have a very short 2 years to get this done. And,of course, dialog/debate alone won't get it. Action is needed. We have to get the RNC's attention by stopping the dollars. We need to see Mr. Mehlman and Mr. Rove resign - now - not January. DD
http://streetlevel.townhall.com

my 2 cents
We haven't heard the last of the Bush family. The President's little brother is a good one.

We Do need new leadership. The Dems have 2 years and they have shown that they know this. If they can keep a muzzle on their legions of wackos they will have a chance in 2008. And if they can come up with a candidate who doesn't turn the stomach of John Q. it could be a horse race.

The winners are the ones who listen to the people they want to lead.

If you haven't had enough
political post mortem columns yet, I have one on my blog: Life Goes On. Check it out. Several other articles there as well.

I think Star has hit it on the head.
"We need a more deregulated health care market, private health and retirement accounts, and an approach to education that allows parents to choose how they wish to educate their children."

Sounds like the basis for a new Contract With America to me.

Loss of Trust / Democrat Victory
Starr's analysis about the message of the election as one of loss of trust, not affirmation of democrat ideology, is on target. Republican leadership failed to deliver on issues of boarder security, spending, judges, education reform, and moral and ethical conduct. However, the MSM and the liberal democrat leadership will announce loudly and often that the vote was all about affirmation of liberal, secular progressive policy and direction, not the failure of Republicans to deliver on those core conservative issues that put them into power in the first place.

Now is the time that we need to speak out with a clear and continuous voice to the Republican party and Republican elected representatives that strong conservative leadership is needed, not simply an elevation of individuals in the succession plan pecking order. Now is the time to speak out with a clear voice that voters are not looking to go back to the failed liberal progressive welfare state, federally controlled education, and entitlement spending structure of the past. Speak out!!!!

where are the leaders??
McCain? Are you kidding me? And someone mentioned Jeb Bush? What's so discouraging is yes, the media is one, big fat Agent for liberalism. And then you had RHINOs including J. Bush touting the lies about the illegal invasion. If you don't want it, CONSERVATIVES.. like Fred Barnes, Medved call us, xenophobes. The complete misunderstanding of this issue by those who SHOULD get it, is insane to me. Talk about a divided house.

A friend of mine mentioned that the Rep. should have their own media outlet. But thinking about it...I disagree. Because the MSM is still viewed as 'fair' and objective, we need to start pressuring these outlets to do what they say they're doing..reporting fairly. We need some new leaders at ABC, NBC and CBS. Vain hope?

The disinegration of the belief in law and order, above greed and the bottom line, I feel, is the foundation of all the GOPs destruction. It shows up in the spending, in the lack of courage to govern, in supporting the illegal invasion, of not fighting a war courageously.

It's pretty dang disgusting.

Main Stream Media's game plan worked
Yes, the Iraq war , the Foley incident and other associated scandals by the Republicans played a role in last Tuesday's nation wide defeat. But, a much, much bigger part of the blame for the huge loss, or credit, must go to the main stream media's game plan that was put in place immediately after President Bush was elected in 2000.

Just think, the left basically controls all the major newspapers, the major Television news organizations and much of the internet. They have all those broad based platforms to spew their twisted views on any issues that may arise each day. The average American sees and hears this every day, over and over. Believe me, these bias and distorted views will soak in over time and will become reality in people's mind. The all out war against President Bush and the Republicans has been a successful one for the Democrats.

The only outlet the Republicans have is a few talk radio programs and Fox News Channel to give people a view of what REALLY happened or to filter out the stupid bias spin on everything.

Since the DEmocrats are now in control, look for a radical change in the way policical news is reported. Suddently anything that is associated with the congressional end of the goverment will be just great and free of critism by these major reporting agencies.

To Fred's point...
Haven't you already heard the Dems/media talking nice and sweetly about not getting out of Iraq?

It's already happening.

And can you imagine how we would have ever won WW11 had we had CNN and the liberal mental illness so pervasive today. Can you just imagine how that war would have gone?

We'd all be either speaking German or Japanese.

Republicans need to police themselves...
Dems too! The number of scandals is outrageous.

The parties should monitor their members activities, so they catch the problem children before they run amok.

The real growth is in Independents anyway - suggesting that the electorate does NOT trust either party.

How else can you establish the trust of the voters.

Lies
Can somebody please define the word lie to me?

I always thought it was when you intentionally to an untruth, not when you repeated something you believed to be the truth.

Clinton lied to the grand jury, the people of the country, and the court but there is no outrage. When Bush repeated what Clinton, Clinton, Kerry and a slew of other libs had said about Iraq the uproar was defening.

Our MSM seems to think that the first amendment gives them license to make it up as they go. The documents were made up but the story was credible? They can't show favoritism by allowing anchors to wear a flag pin but they can unabashedly show terrorist propaganda. They couldn't remember when all the dems were constantly crying that social security had to be fixed when they spent more time reporting the dems claiming social security was ok.

Oh well, the other side is in the majority now. I can't wait for the MSM to discover that the economy to suddenly moving along greatly. And I'll be glad that after we cut and run from Iraq we won't have to listen to what happens there. Something else that will be interresting will be to see is how the vengence of the dems will be spun in the MSM.

Now is the time to collect and save the campaign statements of the freshman Dems to use against them in a couple of years. They may have campaigned as conservative dems but they won't be allowed to vote that way in congress. The comparison in a couple of years should be interresting.

The election
Star,

While I agree in part with the premise of your article, I see that there was a great effort on the part of the main-stream-media to make this happen.

Let me list a couple of examples.

Sen. George Allen of Virginia. Late this summer, Sen. Allen held a double digit lead. Then, the Washington Post set out after him. First, there was the "mecacah" statement which was a remark made to one of his opponents operatives who tracked Sen. Allen, taping every word and waiting for him to slip up. They caught him, and the Post ran with it for a week. This was followed up with the discovery that Sen. Allen had some Jewish heritage; which he only recently became aware of; and was portrayed as trying to "hide his heritage" in the Post. Lastly, was the ongoing story of about one month ago as to wether or not he may have used a racially insensitive word 35 years ago. This again was headline news for about two weeks in the Post.

Nowhere does the Post ever mention the KKK background of distinguished Sen. Byrd. Nowhere does the Post mention the Democrats who threw Oreo's at Republican Senatorial Candidate Michael Steele.

Example two. "It's the economy stupid". Well, if I read the papers or listen to Nancy Pelosi, we are in the midst of a terrible economy. Where are all the stories about low inflation, low un-employement, low interest rates, record high stock markets and a shrinking defecit? They are nowhere to be found in the media.

Example three. "Bush lied" about the war. First, I would like someone to state what lies he actually told. Was it the Joe Wilson, "Iraq wasn't interested in obatining Uranium" one? That's clearly been disproved, but little mention in the MSM. How about all the Democrats who claim they never would have voted to authorize war if they knew all that they know now? Can anyone look back to December of 1998, when Clinton was President and the comments coming out of the mouths of the Democrats when they approved 97-3 the authorization to bomb Iraq and to use whatever means necessary to remove Sadam? This is never brought up. All you hear in the media is that "Republicans" try to use the war to scare people.

There are many more examples that could be discussed. But I chalk up a large part of the election to media complicity.

Contract with America II
A great column... Ms. Parker identifies the broken trust between the President and the Republican majority and Conservatives (Education bill w. Ted Kennedy, Agricultural give aways, new Medicare entitlement, Campaign Finance Reform, runaway spending, dropping the ball on personal health savings accounts, Social Security Reform, indpendent judges... etc.). She also defines the Democrats by reminding us of what their Liberal doctrine really means in our lives, and finally, provides a short list of goals that should become our Contract with America II. This column should be required reading for all the Republican politicians and candidates.

Newsies
I also agree that the big media are, in part, responsible for the election results. But there is enough credit to go around: Republicans spending like drunken democrats, wimpy immigration policy, lack of a clear direction in Iraq, etc.

Conventional wisdom is that you can't beat something with nothing. Not being the other guy is not usually enough to win an election. That was not the case this time around.

The bottom line is that people voted for change for change's sake alone. If you look at any issue with which the people claim dissatisfaction, the democrats have provided no alternate direction. So, I guess you can beat something with nothing provided the known "something" is perceived to be worse than the unknown "nothing" (That is where the media played a huge role).

Although my Senator and Rep were able to hold their seats, I'm not pleased with the outcome. This could be beneficial in the long run. If the career pols get the message that they must actually do the will of the people or they will be ousted, it will be a good thing.

I'm not holding my breath.

The more likely outcome will be more partisan bickering and gridlock. Business as usual.

It's a perfect storm
This was not a one issue election by any means. The left ran on nothing and still won because the Reps lost on Iraq, scandal, immigration, spending, and let's not forget the left mouthpiece media. Meanwhile the left has no alternative plan for Iraq, redeploy, a fancy term for cut and run, is not a plan. The Dems have as much scandal, if not more, than the Reps any day. Jefferson? Reid? Oh right, you won't hear about those on the news. Immigration: no surprise there, the left answer is amnesty. Spending: if you think the Reps could spend like crazy, you ain't seen nuthin' yet!

So how did they win? By not telling the public any of this during the campaign. Every single campaign ad I saw on televison was "we're not Bush and this administration, vote for us." Except that the ads didn't say it as nicely as that.

As for the MSM, yes they delivered the election to the left but it's nothing new. They've been writing revisionist history for years, often with bald faced lies, to spin things so it looks like the left actually has a clue. The sad thing is that if they tell a lie long enough, the public starts to believe it.

One final thought: everyone reveres Reagen nowadays as a great leader but when he was actually in office, the left sought to destroy him too. I remember it well.

Elsinore660
I hate having to go back to this, it's like beating a dead horse, but much of our problem is the MSM. Most voters know only what they hear in 30 second sound bites or read in the papers and fewer of them are reading.

How many news reports were dedicated to the corruption of republicans? I don't have enough fingers and toes to count that high. How many news reports were dedicated to the glowing economy?

The only way we will be able to get the message out in the future is to KNOW the facts and be able to tell other people in a way they can understand. FOX news may be the most watched cable knews and they are more likely to report news the MSM ignores, but what how large is their viewing audience compared to the number of voters?

Republicans lost...
In my state, conservatives DID vote - that is evident as a state-wide proposal to end Affirmative Action was approved by large margin, and another proposal that would have indexed raises for public teachers' pensions to inflation (requiring tax hikes and/or cuts in other services) went down in flames.

However, we still re-elected a governor who has bankrupted the state - not state government, mind you, but a lot of private citizens and small businesses. Personal banruptcy declarations are hitting (or have already hit) an all-time high. The real estate market has collapsed - it is a "buyers' market" in a big way, because no one from out of state wants to move here, while a LOT of people want to sell everything they have here and move out. The rest of the country has a booming economy, but if you look only at what's happening here, you wouldn't know anything about the Dow soaring, more jobs being created, etc.

Last year, there was a push to eliminate our small business tax; the governor insisted that if it were eliminated, the revenue would have to be replaced - "I'm all for tax cuts, as long as there's a way to pay for them. You pay for them with money you have, not with money you don't have." I'm waiting for someone to point out to her that the same principle (You pay for them with money you have, not with money you don't have.) applies equally to the checkbooks of private citizens AND small businesses - I can't pay for tax hikes with money I don't have.

And how did the governor spin her way out of this "single-state recession" in her campaign commercials? Oh, it's all because of "the failed policies of President Bush" Where have I heard that "failed policies" phrase before? It sounds so lame - and familiar.......

We also sent a Democratic Senator back to Washington, DC.

On a more local level, my (Republican!!!) representatives in Congress and the state legislature were re-elected.

I think state-wide elections went Democratic because the Republicans did not keep their base "energized". Notice that I said "keep" - reading between the lines in all kinds of news reports for the last thirty years, it seems to me that Liberals have the shortest memories (except _elected_ Liberals, who maintain archives from which they can dig up dirt when it suits their purpose); Liberals are also motivated more by emotions, compared with Conservatives who are motivated more by reason.

Six years of every bloated porky spending bill from Congress being signed immediately, combined with the "Non-Amnesty" Amnesty biils concerning illegal immigration (these are the two biggest disappointments I recall) turned Conservatives off. There was also that flap about Harriet Miers' nomination to SCOTUS, but I'm not sure how much effect that had in 2006, as she withdrew her name and we got Sam Alito instead. I think that both GWB and Congressional Republicans suffered the wrath and frustration of conservative voters - GWB indirectly, since he wasn't up for re-election; but whether or not he had a cake walk from 2005 to 2006, 2007 and 2008 are going to be much more difficult.

Any Republican Congress(wo)men and/or Senators reading this? We didn't send you to Washington, DC, instead of Democrats, so that you could act like Democrats!!!!

Lack of clear direction in Iraq
Please, all my fellow posters, note "lack of clear direction in Iraq" is being given as a main reason for the Republicans losing this election. Now, please, those of you who can remember back to WWII, please try to imagine an opposing party (the Democrats were and had been in charge back then for more than 10 years), so the Republicans were the opposing party - and try also to imagine all the ups and downs and uncertainties and failures of that war, its terrible loss of life through outright error and stupidity, as well as just deaths in combat - and imagine what would have been the result if the Republicans (and media) back then had constantly repeated during WWII what the Democrats have been repeating nearly since the start of the war in Iraq, that the U.S. and Britain were losing hundreds of thousands of men with "no clear direction" being seen. Does it begin to make sense how the Republicans now and for years since Bush has been in office have been taken advantage of by the Democrats and the MSM - by this constant reference to a lack of clear evidence of direction in Iraq? Direction is in the eye of the beholder - and what do the American people know of direction of the war in Iraq, since the MSM has been peddling it as a failure since day one? Fair is fair - the American people have been sold a bill of goods by the MSM that the war is a failure, but I do not see how you can say that is a fair accusation, when it is all in the eyes of the MSM and the Dems.

Kozinator13
"Blaming the GOP politicians for being politicians who know that most voters aren't political idealist...they want THEIR Senators and Congressmen to get a piece of the Federal pie for THEIR roads and THEIR projects...and businessmen who fund campaigns want those who will help their industries: aka "pork spending"."

____________________________________________

Did you get the part about "MOST", most voters are NOT political idealist; they don't care if their congressman does what's best for the other 49 states...he's in there to make sure that THEY get a part of the Federal pie.

And I stand by my statement...if you think MOST voters are like you, paying attention to what's going on in politics instead of who won the super bowl or who some actress is dating(geez some people have no idea who the Vice President is)...then you ARE ignorant or blowing smoke.

And if that offends you...unfortunately, I'm not the kind of conservative that make apologies I don't mean...and I'm not here to make YOU feel better about buying the con that lost the GOP Congress--and a majority that may have been America's only hope in the fight against terrorism.

It's more basic than that
The reason the voters gave the Democrats control?

"The Republicans are acting like the Democrats.
We might as well let the Dems run things.

"At least they're honest about their utter and complete contempt for the rest of us."

cheers

eon

Rodent 2Tell me what is' the Dem plan?
You chastise the right for wanting it out of Gov.
control, yet I still have'nt heard how the left plans to fix it'
Please'enlighten me.

Re-Articulate
This has been, I believe, a central failure of the current Republican leadership. Articulation has been intermittent at best from the President. Without articulation of goals and successes the MSM is the only thing to fill to vaccum.

Scandals
Elsinore660

It may interest you to know that 70% of the "scandals" under investigation by the House Ethics Committee involve Democrats. Source: Rush Limbaugh.

Kraut has it right, but doesn't finish the thought. He(or she) points out that the (liberal) media broadcast only stories of Republican corruption. What is also true is that the corruption on the Democrat side has HISTORICALLY been more common and more severe because the Republicans DO self discipline. When Cunningham (a real war hero- Tom Cruise eat your heart out) was caught he had to resign. The same with Foley. But Democrat William Jefferson still has his seat despite being caught red-handed with tens of thousands in illicit cash in his freezer.

The list of Democrats with blots on their resumes that would have ended the career the career of a Republican is too long for this forum. Ted Kennedy is only the tip of a huge iceberg.

The Contract with America...
was a CONSERVATIVE platform. It swept Republicans to power in 1994. Four 6 years a liberal Democrat in the White House masquerading as a "centrist" frustrated the will of the majority in Congress, and, as evidenced by their votes, the American people.

When Bush took office in 2001 we justifiably expected our agenda to finally come to fruition. Instead we got pussilnimousness on an unprecented scale; McCain and his "gang of 14", immigration amnesty, no drilling in domestic sources for ANWR, campaign finance, steel tariffs, failure to make the tax cuts permanent, Medicare Prescription benefits, deficit budgets, failure to reform Social Security, etc., etc., ad nauseum, ad infinitum...

Many conservatives figured "Why elect Republicans if they're going to legislate like Democrats?"

GOP Leadership
How about Lt. Gov Steele of Maryland to replace Ken Mehlman?

Piece of the pie...
Re:

"Blaming the GOP politicians for being politicians who know that most voters aren't political idealist...they want THEIR Senators and Congressmen to get a piece of the Federal pie for THEIR roads and THEIR projects...and businessmen who fund campaigns want those who will help their industries: aka "pork spending"."

I have to side with Kozinator on this one. True conservatives are ideological AND practical. We want minimal government. We don't look at government as a font from which good things flow. We look at government as an obstacle that has to be overcome.

Ronald Reagan once said the most frightening words a citizen can hear are "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Lessons not learned
In 1992 we were mad at Bush41 for breaking his "No new taxes" pledge. So some of us voted for Perot and we got Clinton.

So what did we learn? Apparently nothing. In 2006 we got mad at Congressional Republicans for failing to convince a Republican President to close the border. So we didn't vote for Republicans. So now what are we going to get?

Amnestia! Amnestia! Viva McCain! Viva McCain! McCain el Presidente! McCain el Presidente!

Puke.

Trust and Leadership

.....Ms Parker...

.....I agree with your choice of Reagan and King as men who were leaders and inspired trust among their followers...

.....As an ex-Dogface I would add Douglas McCarthur and George Patton...their men would have followed them through the portals of Hades...

.....Is there a leader of that calibre on the Republican horizon?...the pickin's look pretty slim...In a recent vote of Virginia Conservatives they picked Newt Gingrich as the man they favored to be the Republican nominee for President in 2008...

...Gingrich won 31% of the vote
...Romney won 14%
...McCain won 12%
...Guiliani won 7%
...Frist won 3%

.....When Gingrich led the 1994 revolution that took over control of the House I thought we had found our successor to Reagan...but when Gingrich confronted Clinton on the Budget...the House Republicans abandoned him like a bad habit and folded up like wet napkins under the constant negative press of the NY Times and the MSM...

.....A strong leader would have commanded their loyalty...but twelve years have passed since then and Gingrich is older and wiser I presume...anyway I would hate to have to choose between McCain and Guiliani to lead the Conservative Party...Gingrich has been making a lot of sense in his "Winning the Future" articles and maybe he'll get it right this time...if he runs I would be interested in watching the debates to see if anyone was able to shoot him down.....COLOSSUS

postscript: Ms Parker has written a powerful and moving book entitled, "Uncle Sam's Plantation", for those who would like to understand the essence of poverty...both materialist and spiritual...it's roots and causes...I strongly recommended reading this book..... http://www.urbancure.org .....COLOSSUS

Let's see if I understand this
Dem Plan:

Raise taxes.

Increase spending on social programs.

Throw money at research that has proven nothing and is filled with promises of maybe, might, could, possibly and promote abortions for raw materials.

Blindly follow recomendations of political hacks under pressure to recommend something.

Guarantee wage increases for union workers and harm small business.

Make lots of noise about reforming system.

Tie up administration and waste money on vengence investigations.

I think I got it.

You go guys!!

Hindsight and Macaca
Perspective everyone....with hindsight at the side!
No matter your personal position,
This election was about normal-
with maybe a "one seat" tip to the Macaca incident!
To watch seasoned democrats celebrate this as an upset is comical.
To watch repubs hang heads is sort of sad.
2008 is around the corner-
Look and move forward!

Democrat plan
"Put new rules in place to "break the link between lobbyists and legislation." Stop the GOP raping of America."

You mean like how obstructionist Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle got the bill protecting the airlines and airplane manufacturers from lawsuits passed in record time after 9/11 because his wife was a lobbyist for Boeing and Northwest? Oh wait, he was a Democrat...

"Enact ALL the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Which BushCo promised to do."

The 9/11 Commission's real mission was to protect Clinton's reputation, and their report reflects this mission perfectly. Of course the Dems want to do everything it says. The fact that we haven't been attacked since is irrelevant to the Dems compared to them being able to take credit for it.

"Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, maybe in one step. As the states showed, is LONG overdue."

History shows that government interference in the private sector dampens economic activity and costs Americans jobs. The notion that the minimum wage increase is "overdue" assumes that it is supposed to rise. Theonly justification for this assumption is that inflation is either desirable or inevitable (hint: if you make it desirable it will become inevitable).

"Cut the interest rate on student loans in half.
Helping All America afford a better education."

How about paying teachers and professors on an incentive program and getting rid of social promotion? Subsidizing education is the same as making a campaign donation to the Democrat Party, which you can do without writing a new law.

"Allow the government to negotiate directly with the pharmaceutical companies for LOWER drug prices for Medicare patients. It WORKS for the VA."

The government already "negotiates" with drug companies on Medicare prices. They make the drug companies justify the prices they charge. What the Democrats want is government control of Health Care. Senator Carl Levin (D, MI) has admitted that this doesn't work unless government has control of the whole system. The Demoicrats position on this is a "lie". They tell us it's about prescription medicine when it's really about controlling ALL health care.

"Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds. Most people know SOMEONE this could help."

Another LIE. Democrats want embryonic stem cell research funded by government money even though there is NO evidence that there is anyone "this could help." Democrats want embryonis stem cell research funded as a support for their holy grail of legalized, govrnment-funded abortion on demand.

Maybe the reason Solar was unaware of the Dems platform is that it's such a pack of lies that the Dems didn't "articulate" it one time for every ten times they complained about Iraq or "corruption."

""Pay as you go," meaning no increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority."

The Dems controlled Congress from 1954 to 1994. During that time the national debt rose from a few billion to over 6 trillion. No Democrat controlled Congress in that period EVER enacted a balanced budget. Even during the glorious '90's in which the media credited Clinton with balancing the budget even though it was Congressional Republicans who did it, the national debt continued to rise by at least 17 billion every year because Mr. Wondeful couldn't keep his administrations spending within budget despite ever-increasing revenues from an economic boom and 6 years of peace.

Sorry to include Rodent 2 in this post to you.
But you are exactly right about Newt,He has made some major improvements in his thinking,he comes across as grounded and more mature.
Newt in 08' You nailed it!

Rodent 2
All of your points'They are all Socialist'
Is that what you are?
A freakin commie?

Correction
In the final paragraph of my last post it should read "107 billion" instead of "17 billion"

McCain delenda est
The real winner last Tuesday: John McCain. He who would beat Hillary today by five points, if the election were held today. But do conservatives really want a candidate who: signed onto campaign reform that only helped incumbents; took his gang of 14 nincompoop senators and took over the senate, making a fool out of Bill Frist [chalk up one opponent finished and two GOP Senators, toast] badmouthed the tax cuts; acted like a flaming liberal so that he could get free air time and generally made himself a one-man wrecking-crew for Republicans.
McCain's one virtue, as far as Republicans are concerned is that he is pro-life and Rudy is not.
McCain is not an option for me to consider. I will vote for Newt if he runs.

wiseone You wrote:

And you included me in this as ignorant'
I would like to know how you came to that conclusion.
I'am quite aware of the Dems. platform.
It is Socialism'masked quite well by the MSM.

Why Guiliani won't be president....
He recommended that political leaders “do immigration reform” before the 2008 Presidential election cycle begins because it should be easy for both sides to agree on such legislation. “I think that would restore people’s confidence in government (to) get something done,” he said….
Turning to immigration, he said “Illegal immigrants have some constitutional rights,” and the authority of local governments to legislate on immigration issues “depends” on whether the laws infringe upon those rights. He supports “strict” border security, but “at some time, (the government should) allow for people who are working, who are legitimate, to make them come out of the underground.”

“We need to know everybody in the United States,” he said, “because a larger underground network makes it easier for terrorists to hide in America.”
__________________________________________

Hey Rudy!!! If they were "legitimate" workers, they wouldn't be "illegals" you twit! And so do we give US Constitutional rights to foreigner regardless of allegiance to our country or not? Why even have a Constitution at all if that's the case?

Strength and Honor
You're right about Guiliani,he has Socialist hidden in him.
He want's new legistation'We already have laws regarding imigration,we don't need new laws,we just need someone with a spine that can institute them.
Newt in 08

Solar
I don't know where I refered to you as ignorant and that certainly was not my intention.

In your post to Rodent2 you asked what the Dems plan was. r0_d2 replied with these Democrat talking points (aka "lies"). I merely attempted to expose these lies for what they are.

In any case I agree with your assessment of the Dems platform. And that's just the part they've actually admitted to. Wait till we see the things they haven't even told us about yet.

GunnyG
McCain has Clintonitis.

It's a disease that causes the victim to begin reading polls, sucking up to the press, mouthing whatever the latest buzz-phrase is, and emoting for the nearest camera as a substitute for thinking and without regard for the truth.

If the patient is not quickly treated and the infecting virus arrested the victim's cognitive abilities are reduced to becoming essentially a tape recording of DNC talking points.

In advanced cases the failure to win a national election by mouthing DNC tenets after giving up lifelong beliefs on issues like abortion and gun control can result in delusional adherence to extremist theories like global warming as a means of getting attention (for more info on this google "Al Gore").

wiseone
That is exactly why I ask the question of Rodent 2
I wanted them to show their true colors.
And they did,Rodent 2 and GOP both'are hard core Socialists,I just want them to admit they have Comunist ideals,so we can debate them and their lack of values out in the open.
I assume you had'nt read many of my posts,I'am a far right Conservative,A true Constructionist.

I've read your post's, and see we are pretty much in line in thinking.
Tom

tombo777
Right now I'm also behind Newt unless and until someone better comes along, meaning a better conservative option.

Solar...
My worry is that with the Guilianis, McCains, and G.W. Bushs out there- where do we get conservative candidates who still have a pair? I can't believe how loathsome the Republicans have gotten coddling illegals as much or more than the Democrats do. It appears that no vote is so expensive that Republicans and Democrats won't sell their soul and betray their nation to get it.

GunnyG
Christmas came early for the terrorists of the world, that's for sure.

"Amnesty Mel Martinez" to run RNC!!!
"This is the challenge for the Republican Party today _ to re-articulate its vision and to re-establish the trust it has lost with the American people."

Yes, re-establish trust with it's conservative base by putting the author of the "amnesty bill" in charge of the RNC????

Talk about being "Stuck on Stupid"!!!

To all of you who have
posted about John McCain...have you noticed how he is prominently being displayed (chipmunk cheeks and all!) in the MSM following the election? Gag! Conservative voters need to email his web site and tell him that he is NOT wanted
in 2008 (or any Presidential election to come.)
There is no way I could vote for that guy, and to have it come down between him or Hillary is just plain sickening. I agree, Newt in 2008.

Minimum Wage Fallacy

.....The following is a quote from Ms Parkers book, "Uncle Sam's Plantation"...

....."The only true beneficiary of minimum wage laws is the government, which collects more sales tax on the higher prices. Higher prices means higher taxes, and the struggling poor cannot understand why although government demanded they get a raise, they have no more money left over than before."...

.....The Dem/Libs love minimum wage laws because they empower themselves...it fits right in with their Marxist ideology of control...they want to control everything... wages ...prices ...means of production etc. etc....

.....I think Federal Wage laws violate Article X...like Roe...they should be decided by the States...

.....Compassion cannot be dictated by the government....it can only be coerced through the government.....COLOSSUS

baseballdoc
Fallacy' should be spelled with a ph'
as in phallic.
Because that what the min. wage is to small Buss. owners.
A really big screwing!

Good post buddy!

trust and betrayal
This election was very much about trust and betrayal. Mainstream, libertarian Americans brought Newt's reformers into power in 1994, and we kept Republicans in power because government still needs overwhelming reformation.

We trusted Bush's Republicans to continue reforming, but they betrayed us. They became the same big government, self-serving, corrupt problem that the Democrats have been all our lives. They betrayed the voters and the voters turned them out.

Republicans seem reluctant to embrace the will of the voters and elect all new leadership dedicated to reform to regain our trust. We have to get the message to our representatives - return to the ways of Reagan and Newt, and elect all new leadership in that vein.

http://freedomistheanswer.blogspot.com/

Minimum wage
In addition to increasing the prices of goods and services provided by minimum wage workers, an increase in the minimum wage usually results in the loss of minimum wage jobs.

If the market will not bear a price increase substantial enough to cover the wage increase, the payroll must be cut.

Throw in the pending repeal of the "tax cut for the rich" and we'll likely have tens of thousands of unskilled laborers searching for work.

Dems. Party of the little guy?

Hardly.

MacZ,
some here at TH have said that Newt is unelectable because of his image. I think if he runs on ideas instead of image, it's his to lose. And if representative hopefulls are smart, they'll sign on to the new "Contract With America."

Handy
He may be fat'but the Dems. are stupid.
He can diet'the Dems.'Well, you know how it goes.
And the Rinos always get out in front, they get the most from the MSM.
But will never get the nomination.
So feel free to trash the Rinos. I plan to,with all the Volume I can muster.

election
Why did the Republicans get defeated? Simple, they had a president who could not communicate. Clinton told lie after lie but he was able to get a gullible electorate to have faith in him even though they knew he was lying. Bush had no ability to convey his message to the voters, I personally spent more time waiting for him to screw up his speech (which he did time after time) than trying to interpret his thoughts. The prospective presidential candidate must be conservative, but also must be able to get his message across.

MacZ,
"As to your concept of - if they are smart...hold your breath..."
Or not. I don't plan on turning blue any time soon.

"the last leader the Republicans have had sice John F. Kennedy (Yes I mean that) and Ronald Reagan."

I was a bit surprised S. Parker didn't note him when she said, "Leadership is hard to find. In my time, the only two Americans that I can think of that really had these characteristics were Ronald Reagan and Martin Luther King. They made the impossible possible and changed the world." Maybe he didn't change the world, but he made the impossible possible.

Newt and Media
I hope Newt runs. I'll vote for him.

As far as the MSM telling lie after lie, we need to do something about it. A couple years ago on Free Republic we sent emails out every time the LSM lied and swamped them. It made them mad as hell and a lot of the lies got exposed. Another campaign needs to start.

A lot of people are uninformed because all they get are the sound bites on MSM at night, so their that's all they know.
Anybody have any good ideas on how we can spread the word to a lot of people out there that there are alternative news sources without all the lies. We need to bring the uninformed into the tent.

I agree with some of the other posters here that the lame stream media was a big winner in this election.

I wonder how many people know that the "compromised" democrats caught in scandal usually stay and are re-elected?

How about Murtha right now? He was on tape caught in the Abscom scandal. He testified against his peers and got himself off scot free but he talked about taking money in the future. So, this guy is going to be the possible "majority leader". Now how much of that is the LSM going to reveal?

How about Jefferson with the money in the freezer? He's still there and if you listen to the LSM, hey so what, he's a dem.
So, it's ok.

How about Studds, who not only emailed pages but had sex with pages. He continued to remain in congress and got standing ovations.
Foley resigned which he should have but the LSM went on and on.

Scandal and corruption abound on both sides of the aisle.
If people think they elected dems because they are lily white little saints, there will be a big surprise.

Now, we have Hillary bringing back her "socialist health care reform". How's that for small government? I hope people didn't think smaller government when they voted for the dems.

And, yeah, minimum wage increases will only hurt those who need those jobs and the businesses. It will only put people out of work. What a scam that one is.

Oh, well, we can hope for a better tomorrow. So far Nancy and her mobsters are already playing their hands. They aren't even waiting for the first 100 days before they show themselves for who they really are. We are blessed by their arrogance in revealing themselves. Right now they are so impressed with themselves and their "big win" they think they can do anything including baring themselves to the voters. It looks to me they have miscalculated what the voters meant when they voted the dems in. It certainly wasn't for big government and more taxes.

But, then again, I don't think Nancy's gang ever intended to pay attention to the middle. All they wanted was the chance to get their hands on the majority and run from there. Their ruse worked.

Hoots:
Are you out of your mind? There is no way Rudy has even a slight chance of winning. He has way too many liberal ideas and all the dems would have to do would be to put up someone just slightly to Rudy's right; shouldn't be too difficult for them to accomplish. I'm sure they won't forget this election or how they won it and they will simply take a page out of that same playbook.

Heck, I would even consider voting for a Dem if he was conservative and Rudy was my only other option. The guy is so left it is not even funny. He is pro partial birth abortion, pro gun control, pro gay rights.

You can't think he seriously has a chance of winning? I would even take McCain over him though I shudder at the thought.

I pray Newt runs!

Peppermint
The broadcasting license of each network has to be renewed. I am not sure of the time interval but there is a way to petition to block the license renewals.

CNN broadcast outright enemy propaganda during the campaign and that surely is just cause to petition to block their license renewal.
That would certainly get their attention.
I don't know what is involved but someone around here probably can find out.

MyOpine
What the Free Republic set up was some kind of form you could fill out and automatically it would go to the LSM that had committed the offense. I don't know how to do it myself. Maybe someone else here would know.
The freepers would have a news article by one of the offensive socialist slime news outlets where everyone could read it and then slam them with emails calling them on it.

I like your idea about the petition on CNN. There's a columnist here on townhall who may be able to help with that. Unfortunately I can't think of his name right now.

MyOpine
For the first link are you referring to the "victim Murtha" story by Katie Couric?
Good grief! It sure gets deep on CBS. They never quit.
I didn't see the show. I wonder if Katie asked him about his involvement in Abscam.

Oh good grief
Parker: "We know about relationships that come on the rebound. It's just a matter of needing somewhere to go. But there's no substance and no future."

This is arrogance. Parker sounds as if she believes the American people were somehow in love with the Republicans. This was never the case outside of the conservative echo chamber. The Republicans maintained power by the slimmest of margins. The GOP was barely tolerated. The Democrats were tolerated by slightly fewer people. That is the story of the past 12 years.

Conservatives have always been proud of their agenda and have gleefully pointed out that the Dems lack one. What does it say when half of the country prefers nothing over the GOP agenda? The GOP better activate the prayer circles...The Dems need to broaden their appeal in the middle only slightly (providing they maintain the support they now have) and the GOP could be out of power for another 40 years.
This is quite possible, considering that the GOP seems intent on ignoring the message they just received from the middle.

wiseone
When are you guys going to get it...you are NOT the majority...not even the majority in the Republican party (which is good since so many of you deny being Republicans at all.)

And drop the "TRUE" Conservatives BS definition...I ain't buying...and from the results of this last election, neither is the rest of the GOP.

If a "true" conservative cuts government spending, are for closing the borders, refuse to cooperate with the "enemy", then Reagan was NOT a conservative. The man had record...that's right RECORD deficits...he had to withdraw some of his tax cuts...if he hadn't offered 3 million illegals amnesty, we might not have 11 million in America right now...and the man was willing to put aside American's interest to join with the Soviets to "defend" Earth from space invaders.

As for what "Reagan said"...he also said "Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do" and that "Facts are stupid things."

If you're going to follow the man, may I suggest you change your handle?

Civil War II
Leadership from today’s Republicans? Must we keep pretending?

Anyone who thinks today’s Republican Party will be capable of restoring the liberties that are soon to be confiscated during the rule of the Reid & Pelosi parliament and the reign of the Clinton 44 administration is acting like an 1860 Whig.

It will take a party of determined warriors to remove the leeches who the “Stupid Party” has just allowed to reattach to the teat of the Treasury. Rockefeller-Bush Republicans are whipped wimps and cowards. The shrews that have infested the party of Lincoln have desecrated it.

Have you no idea how determined Democrats are to never again lose their grip on power – even if it means bringing the blade down on the neck of Liberty?

You want us to look to Republicans for leadership out of the coming Tyranny? Really?

Take a look at what the Wuss Party has done for us in the last 40 years. Aside from Ronald Reagan and a couple years of the Gingrich Congress, Republicans can be counted on to let conservatives down egregiously, constantly and consistently.

For crying out loud, Nixon gave us the EPA, OSHA and Title IX. Both Bushes have been a conservative's nightmare. Reagan and few Congressional folks excepted, Republicans are worse than worthless. The GOP is the party of infuriatingly wimpy pushovers.

Republicans are the party of the proverbial frogs swimming around in the pot of cold water being slowly brought to a fatal boil.

It will have to get a lot worse before the party willing to fight the battle for Liberty will emerge to save it. Liberty will prevail. It will be saved. But the party to do it will not look anything like the Republican Party as it is now constituted.

The neocomms are at the door. It will take the creation of a new party to fight the Second Civil War just as it did the First Civil War.

Throw the whole
gang load of bums out is what I say.

Since that would be extremely difficult to do the only way we will see it is when the dirty bomb hits Washington. The terrorists will do it for us.

And, the wimps, libs, betrayers and all will be evaporated.

Start looking in your community for a few good men and women. We'll need them afterwards.

Please excuse me, my patience is thin this late and I'm sick of the whole lot of politicians. Like one poster said, once they get to Washington, they forget why they went there in the first place.

Star says:
"Leadership is hard to find"
I guess the following is the face of our new leadership.

Katie Couric to Murtha during interview:

"You were called a 'defeatocrat,' a 'liberal turncoat.' Senator John McCain said you had become too emotional, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said your comments were damaging to troop morale.” She then cued him up: “Did you feel vindicated last Tuesday?" Murtha, naturally, agreed with Couric's characterization: "Oh, I certainly did feel vindicated.”"

you kidding
MacZed you must be quite young. Evidently you have been brwainwashed by the elites who idealize the Kennedy boys. Their whole existence was a fairly tale made up by their cohorts in ths MSM. The only thing they did to get star status was to be assasinated. Bobby Kennedy was a spoiled little brat, much the same as his brother Teddy.

Another great article!
Right on the money about the root of the issue.

Mel Martinez to lead RNC????
Not just NO, but HE!! NO.

GOT IT?

IF the GOP did not learn from this election, the voters will happy to return to remind you again in '08 & beyond.

This nomination/appointment is done by the President. Let your voices be heard:

Martinez will be voted on in January - CALL THEM NOW!

You do NOT lie to OR insult you largest voting block and remain in power!

Handy:
I don't argue that Newt will have a few obstacles to overcome, but if you think the MSM isn't going to exploit even the smallest of obstacles for any candidate, you are fooling youself. Yes, Newt will need to address insiderness, etc. As far as his issues with his wife, Rudy has a rather large skeleton in his own closet with regard to marriage and fidelity.

I'm sorry but you cannot just ignore RG's liberal stance on issues like abortion and gun control. Moving to the left is not a winning strategy, just ask the democrats.
