Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Politics, like nature, hates a vacuum. If candidates have nothing to say, or if voters aren't interested in what they are saying, we can be sure dirt will fill the vacuum.

So it should come as no surprise that in Virginia, where James Webb, the Democratic candidate challenging incumbent Sen. George Allen, is making disappointing progress, sludge is starting to ooze from Webb's campaign.

Suddenly, after 25 years in state politics, including a term as governor prior to being elected to the Senate, allegations emerge that the Republican uttered, years ago, the racist n-word when he was a college football player. According to another allegation, back in those same days the future governor and senator stuffed a severed deer's head into the mailbox of a black household.

The real issue on the table now is whether voters should be more concerned that Allen might have been racially insensitive in his youth, or whether, now, at a time when the country has real problems to address, an intellectually bankrupt Democratic Party chooses to spend its time excavating dirt rather than generating ideas.

Polls show that Americans are not happy with the direction of the nation today. This is not a partisan question, but a general discomfort with what passes for leadership. Too often our choice remains between those with whom we disagree and those whom we don't trust.

I think it's symptomatic of the fact that politics, which once defined the realm of public service, is today simply business. A huge commercial infrastructure exists of those who earn very handsome livings at advising candidates how to raise money, how to campaign and how to win. These operatives are not compensated for ideas about how to make the country better. They are compensated on whether their clients win.

With millions of dollars to raise, and a complex world of media to deal with, weak candidates, driven by lust for office that is stronger than any clear agenda, turn their campaigns over to these operatives.

Dredging up aspersions to question an opponent's character is now a common part of this sleazy business. It doesn't matter whether there is truth to allegations or not. Once an aspersion is made, even if it is never substantiated, the public perception of a man or woman is forever impacted. Even when incontrovertible evidence is brought to bear that the allegations are pure garbage, the shadow of the allegations remains.

Consider the price Clarence Thomas paid for the sickening campaign of sleaze that was run against him.

Those who get paid generously to dredge up the sleaze could care less that they may damage forever the most valuable possession of any individual _ their name and reputation. If they succeed at destroying an opponent, at whatever price, and their client wins, their cash registers ring today and will ring in the future.

It's not just individual candidates who are on the wrong end of sleaze campaigns that pay the price. It's the American people in general.

While the mud gets thrown, the real issues that need to be addressed are pushed to the sidelines. Is it any wonder that the country's many problems are ignored, accumulate and get worse?

Racism is one of the more popular allegations for the sleaze sleuths to dredge up. The Democratic operatives who found a few individuals, who for whatever reason want to damage George Allen, must have been thrilled with their find.

Again, whether or not the allegations are true, the operatives have done their job and have hurt Allen and can cash in for themselves. Does anyone think for a minute that these operatives care about blacks and improving their troubled lives?

Forget it. Today race is not an issue that is raised out of concern for the exploited. It is raised to exploit. The objective of the Webb campaign is to slander Allen and generate mistrust. There is no issue here about protecting black interests.

The fact is that Allen, with a conservative agenda to protect life and families, and to keep taxes low and limit the scope of government, would be far better for improving the lot of blacks in America today than his Democratic opponent.

But it would take some thought to appreciate this. The only thought the Webb campaign is interested in is how to smear Allen and brand him as a racist.

With the big-government formulas of the left irrelevant to dealing with black problems today _ of family breakdown and 50 percent high-school dropout rates in urban areas _ character assassination is the only thing left for Democrats to campaign on.

Voters should understand that today's real racists are those who choose to play political games while blacks languish as a growing underclass in America's cities.

Central tenet here is...

that the "forbidden word" (THUNDERCLAP!) story has been generated by the Webb campaign.

Let's see.

"In the preparation of the original article...Salon never communicated with...Democratic challenger Jim Webb or any Democratic Party entity." - http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/09/29/allen_sabornie/print.html

The stories don't say whether Salon found Shelton (the first "witness") or whether he found Salon. But either way, it looks like Salon then tracked down other team members to confirm the story, including the second teammate to come forward publicly.

I haven't found anything describing how the anthropologist from Alabama broke his story.

Pat Waring, the 75-year-old from Maryland, called MSNBC with her story, and says she never has had contact with the Webb campaign or the Democratic party of Virginia.

Compare this with the Allen campaign:

"At the urging of the Allen campaign, a Fairfax County man contacted The Washington Post and said Webb told him in 1983 that while a student at the University of Southern California in the early 1960s, Webb drove around Watts and harassed blacks while shouting epithets." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/29/AR2006092901371_pf.html

"Allen, who is fighting for a second term, organized a news conference with five female U.S. Naval Academy graduates who said an article written 27 years ago by Allen's opponent, James Webb, prompted harassment by male midshipmen at the academy." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/13/AR2006091302301_pf.html

It's apparent that the Allen campaign's been involved in putting out the negative stories about Webb, but it's not at all apparent that the Webb campaign's been involved in the negative stories about Allen.

Three possibilities:

1. The Republicans aren't nearly as good at this kind of politics as the Democrats.

2. The media are partnered with the Democrats and aren't revealing it.

3. The Democrats haven't done what Parker claims.

.

BS
A. The Republicans AREN'T as good at this kind of politics as the Democrats.

B. DUH! The media ENDLESSLY reveal their partnership with the Democrats. They just don't SAY so (publically). But for anyone who follows politics and follows the media, it takes a WILLFULLY blind bias not to see it.

For Instance
It may be a bit obvious, but apparently you missed it.

While your media sources make sure the FIRST thing you know about Webb's accuser is ""At the urging of the Allen campaign"

How about those who have accused Allen??

"The stories don't say whether Salon found Shelton (the first "witness") or whether he found Salon. But either way, it looks like Salon then tracked down other team members" (surprise, surprise)

"I haven't found anything describing how the anthropologist from Alabama broke his story."
(I'm shocked!)

Notice a pattern here?

The POINT is. . . . . . .
Bs Detector misses the point of the column -- Star's point is that ALL politician's number one job has become to get re-elected. All of them do what ever it takes to be re-elected AND IGNORE the salient, essential interest of the people and the nation. I DON'T care if the mud slinging allegations made by or against any politician are true or not! Just knock off this crap and get to real issues and solve real problems, take real interest in the problems. have the GUTS to take a stand and stick with it on the issues that matter. Accept the responsibility of your stance and make decsions on the real stuff instead of weasle wording your stance on every issue to the point that no one can ever point a finger at you regardless of outcome! Bottom line is BE A LEADER. Lead, take charge, take ownership, take meanimgful action on real problems. Quit trying to make the other guy look bad. As for me neither the Republicans nor the Democarats have a leader among them. I would vote them all out of office if that were possible.

Mud Slinging for profit
Star,
Once again you have hit the nail on the head. These sleaze dealers do not care for the minorities that they supposedly defend. They only care for the fat pay check they get for defaming a great candidate like Senator Allen. I hope that African Americans will look at the record of actions in office and not accusations by hired liars, for the truth about the candidates true feelings.

Total BS
I bet that if it were in the interest of the Demon-crats, they could find someone who knew Ghandi when he was 12-13 years old and said a bad thing about someone. This is typical of politicians from both parties, but the Demon-crats have made an art of the mud-slinging. Mostly, because everything is relevant and lying to promote the left's agenda is just fine and dandy with them. In their warped little minds, the ends (defeat "Bush and conservatives) justify any means.

Jackson and Sharpton will be in Virginia real soon.

Full agreement, here...
What a load of garbage. Sen. Allen is being judged on ONE SINGLE WORD he uttered and something he may or may not have said 30+ years ago. Political spinners are the curse on our society. We are talking about Carvile and Begalla types, and IMHO these sortes should be erased from our political world. Ms. Star has it so correct it is scary. They get paid money....to ruin the OTHER person. Sen. Allen should be judged on what he has done for his state and people..not on one word or the possibility he said something...I think I wanted to hurt my rial back in HS...does that mean I am gulity of attempted murder....??C'mon, let's get some of our integrity back....after all the spinning being done by the Democrats and all the lies they foist upon us...gets some brains and vote the issues....I, for one, have had enough. Clean out the Democrat party...the country deserves no less.

NOTA

It's times like these when you almost wish NOTA (None of the above} was on the ballot.

Superb column!
So thankful Ms. Parker is willing to say it like it is! Now how do voters put a stop to it, short of not voting at all?

Kimberly
The SCV is NOT a neo confederate group, but is one that does Civil War reenactments and tries to keep the memory of the soldiers that honorably served in the Confederate armed forces alive. The SCV has not engaged in any kind of racial discrimination, or in any type of racial attacks. And there is nothing wrong with the SCV keeping the memories of the brave soldiers that served in that war alive. And for your information, there are a good number of blacks that are buried and honored by the SCV in the South.

And if being affiliated with a group that has some history of racial discrimination or violence is the great disqualifier, how do you justify the continued affiliation of your 'progressive' leaders with the Democrat Party? This is, after all, the party that reisited the Reconstruction era Civil Rights act, that gave birth and continued support to the KKK, and stood firm against the CRA and VRA of the 1960's.

So by your logic, that means that Bill "First Black President" Clinton is a confirmed racist, eh?

Oh for goodness sake, Kimberly
Now do a dissertation on Sen. Robert "KKK" Byrd.

And about how the Dems immediately expelled him from the Senate when they discovered his racist past.

And, I presume, how only them thar racist Southerners have voted him back into office over the many years. The many, many, many, many years.

Personally, I think KKK trumps CCC. Trumps even CCC plus SCV. And yet, the Dems don't seem to hold his membership against KKK Byrd. Whassup with that?!!!

Flagwaver
If that's the extent of Kimberly's logic, then she is indeed correct (for once). Just ask Mr. "Say" McIntosh!

Also see http://www.geocities.com/republican_strategist/clinton-racist.html

Whose Gore is being oxed.

It depends on who you are.
Hillary can make cracks about the Indians at 7-11 or Dean that the Blacks at the GOP are wait staff, but no problem.

After all, the left does not recoginize Powell, Rice , or Thomas as "real" Blacks. After all they worked for Bush.

Webb's "Disappointing Progress"?
So Ms. Parker says Democrat Jim Webb "is making disappointing progress." That's an interesting description. According to the newest Mason-Dixon poll, Webb and Allen are tied, at 43% each.

And here's a sentence from a Sept. 30 story from the "Richmond Times-Dispatch": "Allen was up by 16 percentage points in July and by 4 percentage points earlier this month." The story is here:
http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD/MGArticle/RTD_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1149190901160

Why get so upset? Vote!!!
Actions speak louder than words.

It's fine to complain about negative campaigning and how we are being disserved, but what are we doing about it? Are we refusing to vote for anyone who uses such attacks as a substitute for addressing the issues, regardless of which party he's in? Are we willing to vote for another candidate in response to such attacks?

Until we do, let's be ready for more of the same. Business is business. And now, government is business. And politics is business.....

If this is a business, then voters are also consumers. When are we going to find another supplier (like an independent)? If enough people did so, one or both of these parties would end up where they belong: on the ash heap of history. We have to be willing to vote for someone who might not win the election.

Sure our federal government is set up to work with a two party system, but that's not set in stone. We don't have a parliamentary system, but a third party could have an influence. Remember when Jim Jeffords switched party affiliation? Imagine a group of ten to fifteen independent representatives in a closely divided house. Which side would court them (us) more?

Libel
Makes you think our libel laws need rewritten so that those who would libel anyone -- including political enemies -- could be made to put up (their hard evidence) or shut up and pay up big time.

Clarity from Star
Thanks Star for providing the clarity needed in the Va race.

Allen is not a racist, nor does he use race to further his career. His record is perfect compared to the demagogery of the Sharptons, Jacksons and others who demean their race by their victimhood propaganda.

To Kimberly
Kimberly .."You ignorant _ _ _ _!....How come you Dems NEVER mention Good 'ole boy Robert Byrd!

Education is a major part of the fix for this sorry situation. My second career involves being a teaching assistant at a public Charter School. I am delighted to report that at least at "my" school, black parents and kids are doing quite as well as anyone else. As a patriotic American who wishes to see us as strong as possible, and an unabashed idealist who enjoys watching success rather than failure, acceptance and serenity rather than rejection and misery, i am delighted every day by the positive situation i see. Having said this, the public school system is obsolete and broked, a hideously expensive dinosaur. Choice is what has made this country great, and its necessary to improve education now. Home schooling, vouchers, alternative schools are needed NOW.

To Kimberly
If you Really want a Republican to lay into....Why not This idiot from Florida...Rep.Foley!...Now ,that would be legit! But, no you're too dumb and too partisan...

Wild idea to solve the garbage campaigns
Gee, if every American voter DID NOT vote for the Democratic candidate just think of the impact.

Vote for one of the opponents IF you can, if not, just don't vote for the office. Let the other voters vote count a little more.

The candidates will get the message that the voter is still important and we are tired of the manipulation.

As for me, I could not vote for Arnold here in California, but I could choose to vote for the Libertarian or not at all for Governor.

It would certainly be fun to watch the reactions of the losers and their handlers trying to explain how the American people decided to take control.

And the next elections campaigns would CHANGE.

By the way, this would be a perfect time to do it. Give us a chance to have a more civil campaign for the next President.

Think about it.....

YAWN!!!!!
Kimberly still throwin' it around...? Kim, baby...
Robert Byrd is still in office...get your claws into him...not only is he a racist bigot, but he should be getting his meals in a nursing home by now. Tell me why you have never called him out?
Kim...Kim....Kim, did you retire for the evening?
I thought so...Democrats of his ilk, are not on your radar.

So, Unknown.. that would mean
you are getting ready to sign that little request that Kimberly is about to draft...you know the one..where the 'Ds' ask Robert Byrd to resign because of his outright, blatant racism and bigotry...happened about 20 years ago...but who's keeping track of time. Some one said he has changed.... Let me know when that paper is drawn up...

i have a question
now i am still wondering why him saying one word he may or may not have know the meaning of or him possible saying the n-word 30 something years ago has anything to do with this election when he has not done anything else in office to seem racist. Plus why is this stuff only coming out now. i heard unknown say Mr Allen said the macca(sp?) word several months ago why did they wait till a month and a half till elections to relase it.

Also what about Mr Webb. i heard tonight unconfirmed by me on the mark lavin show that in the same washington post article that talk about mr allen it said webb went around some LA neigborhood when he was younger and shot pellet guns at Black citizens yelling racial comments.

I was also unaware that Byrd renounced his affiliation with the clan where can i confirm that information.

This is one reason why i hate humanity we are so quick to jump on a single miss-step no matter how much evidence to the contary we have about how a person acted in the past. All it takes is one accusation and your life is in the toliet for years even if it isn't true.

Couldn't stay out any longer

"i heard unknown say Mr Allen said the macca(sp?) word several months ago why did they wait till a month and a half till elections to relase it."

No. That tape was released by the Webb campaign within three days of the incident.

"Also what about Mr Webb. i heard tonight unconfirmed by me on the mark lavin show that in the same washington post article that talk about mr allen it said webb went around some LA neigborhood when he was younger and shot pellet guns at Black citizens yelling racial comments."

Perhaps you should question what you hear on the radio and go read the sources they cite. The Post quoted a former co-worker of Webb who said Webb told him that in the early 60's Webb and friends would ride around Watts pointing unloaded guns at black people. Further, that they were caught once and beaten, at which point they stopped. I think this is not a true story, since even before 1968, Watts was not the safest place around, less so for white folks. If you think that a car full of white 20-year-olds could get "caught" pointing guns at people in Watts and merely be "beaten," I've got some nice farmland in Arizona for you.

"This is one reason why i hate humanity we are so quick to jump on a single miss-step no matter how much evidence to the contary we have about how a person acted in the past. All it takes is one accusation and your life is in the toliet for years even if it isn't true."

"BS Dectector - We reap what we sow. That means you condon and support it thus are part of the problem."

Mine was a thinly veiled reference to the fact that this scandal-starved political environment was fed for 8 years by partisan Republicans who going to any lengths to be rid of Bill Clinton.

Would you be happier if I had said "Republicans reap what Republicans sow"?

"It's all about keeping those seats and the power in Republican hands, regardless of whether the candidate is a sexual predator of underaged boys or a known bigot." Or a sexual predator and rapist who lied to a grand jury under oath and suborned perjury. Oh, wait, that was your man, wasn't it? Those in glass houses should examine them before hurling bricks.

Personally i would have had no problem with what Bill Clintion did in the white house if he hadnt commited perjury (not sure if that is spelled right). Even though i feel commiting perjury or any crime in office is an impeachable offense I hated the scadal then and thought it was a waste of time and tax dollars.

and you never answered my question about sticks and stones

not retorical
it is trying to find out why people now a days seem so thin skinned about anything that could even be possiblably considered offensive. Just remmeber everyone THERE IS NO CONSITUTIONAL RIGHT TO NOT BE OFFENDED, so please lets all be the adults i know we are.

Okay, let's restate the issue

The is not the words that Allen used 30 years ago; it's whether or not he lied when he said he "doesn't remember ever using that word and nor was it a part of my vocabulary."

If more evidence mounts, then he looks worse and worse. But with the focus now elsewhere, there may not be any more evidence.

Allen may be the only Republican in the country thankful for the Foley scandal.

.

maybe
i would like to dig more into this allen thing i personally dont think he is a racist cuz of one word when he really has not done much of anything else to show himself as one but i need to do some digging. Do you know where i can find a copy of the video where Mr allen said macaca or whatever?

and about the Foley case the man is sick and this should have been reported sooner but if my information is correct everyone seem to ignore it, the pages, the Dems and the Reps so a big GRRRR to all of them.

I know it's late, but UNKNOWN
By the DEM's own timeline...BYRD is still a racist. If he is "so called" forgiven for being a KKKer...(by my estimation that is the absolute worse thing a human being can do) why is it so hard to forgive someone who 'perhpas', 'supposedly', 'may have' used a perjorative 30 years ago?
The difference is Byrd=Dem....Allen=Repub and we need to get as many Republicans as we can...fighting the issues does not work so tear them down in the dirtiest way dems know how...character assasination. Works every time!

unknown
unknown writes:
"I've seen two interviews, one on "Hannity and Colmes" and the other on "Hardball/w Chris Matthews", in which Robert Byrd renounced his KKK affiliation."

Yeah, I saw that too..wasn't that the one in which Robert Byrd was STILL using the n-word?? Wait, let me go google it for you...

Yeah, Fox News Sunday, March 2001.

Let's not forget the 14 hours and 13 minutes he spent in an unsuccessful filibuster during the debate over the 1964 civil rights act.

Of course there is this gem: "As recently as 1997, he told an interviewer he'd encourage young people to become involved in politics, but with this warning: "Be sure you avoid the Ku Klux Klan. Don't get that albatross around your neck. Once you've made that mistake, you inhibit your operations in the political arena."

Even now as senior Democrat on the Appropriations Committee he is regularly hailed by fellow Democrats as the conscience of the Senate.

Yeah, don't want to make THAT mistake.

What a load of garbage..(BS)
""Allen may be the only Republican in the country thankful for the Foley scandal.""
I don't think so, BS...Democrats and Bill CLinton will be forever grateful that his red face is off the telly.
I am still trying to figure out why anyone must have their character sullied because of a slight of memory way back 30 years. If the truth were known, we are all guilty of using a perjorative, and not just toward the African race. This is all a ridiculous arguement and democrats EVERYWHERE deserve to lose over this....anyone ever hear of the issues, anymore?

there is more
now i have heard some people mentioning mr Allen saying the word macaca or something like it on some tv interview a few months ago, i have not seen it myself and would like to know at least what station it aired on if at all so i can varify it. I dont have a clue what the word means but it is something offensive to the black community.

Ecclesiastes 7:21,22
"Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others."

There aren't too many who haven't cursed the race of another man at some time or other in their life.

Let's Demand Integrity over Exploitation
WELL SAID STAR! It's as if you were reading my mind WORD FOR WORD. Wow! Yes, as a young Black man I am SICK and tired of politicians (especially on the Left) exploiting race and all the while doing little if anything to address issues of racism. But I like how you pointed out how this all says something about us the American people for letting politicians get away with such nasty mudslinging and race exploitation. We need to never tolerate such cheap politics and demand that those who with to represent us in this great Republic do so with integrity. Folks running for office can no longer be on an "integrity fast" yet think they can quickly gain my respect or vote by simply using trigger words to get me to hate their opponent. No see, we must be much smarter than that and not let them think so. Along with a demand for virtue, we must demand that those seeking to represent us explain why they are the one to vote for (due to their solid stance on issues--solutions). When I was single, I never approached a lady who I was interested in with lines of how the "other guy/guys" sucked. I came at her with who was and what I was all about. That was just the beginning. Then I had to actually prove it. We need to tell the folks on the Left and anyone for that matter (Right or Left) to stick to explaining to us who they are and what they are about. Them we must have them PROVE IT! But before we give them that chance, let's demand they stop the mudslinging if they expect our vote.
Good work Star!

this is a very good point however there are some differences between possibly saying somthing and writing it down, but your right it was 30 years ago who cares i would much rather find out what they plan to do in office then see the negatives of the opponet.

Getting Tired of Same Old Saw
I'm getting tired of hearing all this nonsense about Webb's campaign discussing Allen's racism while poor old George just wants to talk about issues.

Webb has never been focused on Allen's racism, even though the issue has been pervasive thanks to Allen's own persistent missteps and outright lies (Does anyone really believe that a confederate-obsessed young man never once used the n-word?). A few days ago Webb even refused comment when flatly asked by Wolf Blitzer to give one.

Webb keeps asking everyone to get back on the issues. Instead, we were treated to Wolf Blitzer asking him THREE times about an article he wrote 27 years ago. Then, when Webb finally asked whether they could just talk about foreign policy Wolf wanted instead to discuss whether Webb thinks Allen is a racist. Webb DECLINED.

This is all a lot of crap. Webb desperately wants to talk about issues. Allen, on the other hand, claims to want to talk about issues, but is running nothing but a smear campaign consisting of finding middle aged women who think Webb insulted them when they were 20 years old. I think the latest ad from Allen is one where Webb is accused of being for higher taxes. Did the Republicans actually quote any speech or read any Webb position paper to make this assertion? NO. They simply named a couple of liberals and said Webb wants to be like them. Absolutely pathetic.

If Allen wants to talk issues, why doesn't he?

By the way, I see no mention in your column of the fact that Allen refused to debate Webb in front of the NAACP, even though Allen claims that he's much more in tune with African Americans than Webb. What's he afraid of?

What the ... ??
Big belly writes that Webb's waiting to "cash in" on the campaign like Lamont and that "Webb's campaign managers have already set events in motion by sending limos and private jets for Sharpton,Jackson and Maxine "wierd hats" Waters to accomodate their busy schedules."

NRALifer calls him a "liberal" and a "quitter".

Where do you guys come up with this garbage?

NRALifer, perhaps you are not familiar with Webb's strong pro-second amendment stance. It's totally indistinguishable from Allen's. And since you seem to be impugning his character, upon what do you base the assertion that he's a quitter? He spent four years in the Reagan Administration, not 10 months as misrepresented by that lying campaign ad. And he resigned rather than see a reduction in the Navy's fleet. He was a policy level guy. If he disagreed with the policy then he had no choice but to resign or to do something that offended his conscience. As for the "liberal" tag. You really crack me up with that one. I guess you mean by that he isn't blindly in favor of going to war without an exit strategy or a decent plan for the occupation. Maybe that's because he knows what it's like to kill and have people trying to kill you and thinks we should only do that when we have to.

And Bigbelly -- Mr. Webb was doing quite well without having to "cash in" on the campaign. He's got plenty of money, so what's your point? You talk about people like Sharpton and Waters. Where the heck did that come from? His campaign never had any money until the last couple of weeks ago and I haven't seen anything about limos for Sharpton or Waters. Oh, I get it, you're just throwing it out there because it'll get the more ignorant readers of this column all twisted up. It's misinformation deliberately put out there to manipulate people instead of making them focus on issues. Well, carry on, you're a worthy acolyte of George (I never met an issue I really wanted to debate) Allen.
