Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Conservatives had something to celebrate this past week in the way of a couple notable victories in battles in our ongoing cultural war. Two high courts, one in New York and one in Georgia, ruled supporting an understanding of marriage in state law as that which takes place between a man and a woman.

But, although a couple important battles have been won, there should be no doubt that a long and protracted war will continue. And it's worth paying attention to the very special weapons of this war _ words, and how they are used.

Usually, we think of words as building blocks for sentences, which are then used to construct ideas with which to make arguments. In today's culture war, battles are not waged with ideas, but by attacking the building blocks themselves _ the words _ and changing their meaning. It's kind of a verbal terrorism.

In this sense, I've come across an observation by the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius that really fits what's going on around us today: "When words lose their meaning, people will lose their liberty."

The reasoning of the deciding opinion in the New York case is so simple and clear you can't help but feel some sense of relief that the world indeed has not gone mad. The operative articles in the state's Domestic Relations Law, the opinion says, " ... nowhere say in so many words that only people of different sexes may marry each other, but that was the universal understanding ... in 1909" when the articles were adopted.

Furthermore, the opinion goes on to quote from the law: "The parties must solemnly declare ... that they take each other as husband and wife" and that clerks obtain relevant information from "the groom" and "the bride."

For the gay activist plaintiffs the offense here is that there is something _ in this case marriage _ that might actually have some real, irreducible meaning, not accessible to political activism. Sort of the opposite of Shakespeare's point that "...a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." That is, I commit a hate crime if I deny your claim that your dandelion is a rose.

The strategy in the assault on marriage is that if the institution is not providing what you want, change the meaning of the institution. Why it is the way it is, the fact that it has been this way from time immemorial and, indeed, the idea that there might be anything objectively true, becomes irrelevant.

The problem gets transformed from the preservation of the integrity of marriage, which was the original point of the law, to a claim that the law discriminates and "restricts an individual's right to marry the person of his or her choice."

Now the cheapening of language for political ends has great potential in the hands of a true artist and wordsmith like the Rev. Al Sharpton. Someone with Sharpton's skills rightly has ambition beyond simply changing the meaning of marriage. Sharpton takes on Christianity itself.

So, in recent days Sharpton has been critical of black pastors for "narrowly" focusing on such marginal issues as abortion and gay marriage and ignoring such pillars of the Christian faith as affirmative action (I've been searching for the chapter and verse on this in my Bible) and "ending" poverty (my scripture says that "destitute people will not cease to exist within the land" and explains that this is the very reason for the personal obligation to give charity).

"Right" Christians, according to Sharpton, would not seek to deny a woman's right to destroy the child within her (in this sense, black women, who account for 40 percent of the nation's abortions, must be a truly blessed community) or a "gay couple's right to marry."

Yes, if the black church had its act together, according to Sharpton, it wouldn't be so obsessed with the half million aborted black babies each year, the 70 percent of black babies born to unwed mothers, the 65 percent of black households headed by single parents and the rampant incidence of AIDS, and would instead focus more on the Voting Rights Act.

Can the Lord, as Christians understand Him, really be more concerned with majority minority voting districts than black children wandering the streets with no values, guidance or purpose in life?

I think Confucius had a point. If words have no meaning, if they can be manipulated and used as political tools, if indeed there is no sense of any truth rooted in tradition and experience, there will be no freedom.

Fortunately, a note of sanity was struck in New York and Georgia. But the war goes on.

Good column. Two things.
The redefinition, or deconstruction of the definitions, of words is very powerful, and Orwell used it brilliantly in his novel "1984" when one of the themes was the government's Newspeak program being utilized as a method of thought control.

My second thought: there's no restriction on the right of gays to marry; they simply can't marry people of the same sex. Just like everyone else. So in reality, they're not seeking the same rights as everyone else -- which would be the right to marry someone of the opposite sex -- but in fact are seeking new and special rights.

People who want to marry their pets or siblings could make the same argument. A line has to be drawn somewhere. Traditional marriage has served society well for thousand of years.

The war with words
Excellent article about the cultural civil war we are presently engaged in.

Not only are words being given new meaning but only certain groups are allowed to use other familiar words and phrases. (See Kathleen Parker's column "Putting Words to Rest from 07/07/06 here: http://www.townhall.com/Columnists/KathleenParker/2006/07/07/putting_words_to_rest ).

Pretty soon we'll only be able to say Good Morning and Good Evening....well, maybe not. I hear that in North Korea the masses are only allowed to say it is a good morning if it has been declared so by President Kim Il Sung.

More on redefinitions of words
It makes no difference how many times Rev Sharpton calls it a rose, it is still a dandelion. We really don't need to go into the fact that dandelions are this OR that, simply that they ARE dandelions.

Rev Al is a snake oil salesman. Or a magician if you prefer. He is working so hard trying to get us to see some inconsequental thing over HERE, that we do not notice the most serious happening over THERE.

What I want to know is what was his cut in the Brawley incident and how much does he stand to gain with the Lacrosse players?

Good article as always.

Print size....
OK, some old guy has got to say it! Bring back the font enlarging click point at the head of each commentary!

Government is granting privileges
by dispensing heterosexuals the license to marry. The legitimacy of government rests on the recognition and defense of indiviual and private property rights, which are equal to all. Once government goes beyond that, it compromises it's legitimacy by dispensing privileges. Heterosexuals as heterosexuals have no rights. There can be no gay rights because there can be no heterosexual rights. There are only the rights of the indiviual. Why is the government handing out special status to anyone at all ?!

Not one word of the law will be changed
Jesus said that he did not come to abolish the law but to enforce the law -- that not one word of the law would be abolished until it had been fulfilled.

"Reverend" Al Sharpton's contention that he knows better than Jesus what is in the Mind of God is appalling -- but it is not surprising in today's world. Anyone who has been in a store and seen a toddler dismantling a shelf of toys and throwing things on the floor -- and seen how Mama appears like magic only when someone tries to STOP the mayhem -- knows what is going on here. The sin in their eyes is in restricting the destructiveness in any way, as long as it is THEIR destructiveness.

The answer to poverty...
2nd Thessalonians, chapter 3 verse 10 reads as follows: 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

This same principle is stated elswhere in the bible but I can't remember them off the top of my head

JohnUnderhill: You left out...
... the other key word in what I wrote: "new". The "new" part is the fact that you can't currently marry someone of the same sex -- or your dog or sister or more than one person, etc. -- and means that they're trying to redefine the institution of marriage.

Clear now?

REPLY TO SPECIAL 'RIGHTS'
The idea that a small group wants to gain new priveledges automatically makes them special. These priveledges are based on who someone has sex with. That makes them special-no one else has these same priveledges. Marriage is from God. The ability to marry is and shall be between a man and a woman only. Everyone in society shares this priveledge and no one shall be granted special priveledges based on who they have sex with.

Mixing with the pagans...
Ms. Parker, please stop confusing your authority with Confucius. Mixing the pagans with Christ is not helping the cause. Thomas Aquinas did this in the 13th century and the Catholic church has never recovered.

As for Mr. Sharpton, the apostle gives instruction to Titus regarding false teachers in the church.

“…there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers…whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain…They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.” [Titus 1]

A Line Drawn
BrianR has it correct when he writes "a line has to be drawn somewhere." It is now the task of conservatives and all sober citizens to make that line as solid as steel.

Good job.
What's even more amazing is that people like Ed Schultz say that the Left is the one being attacked in this "culture war".

Keep up the good work.

Collin

Traditional Family
The only place to see the traditiional family these days is on "Leave it to Beaver" reruns

Marriage is society's license to have ch

As to the two state courts that affirmed marriage between a man and a woman, well done. When is the Washington State Supreme Court's Chief Justice Gerry Alexander going to exert some leadership and get a decision handed down on the challenge to the WA state law defining marriage as being between a man and a woman? The case was heard 16 months ago. His opponent John Groen deserves serious consideration for this and other reasons.

Shades of Clinton, and
his infamous "Depends on what the meaning of 'IS', is."

All true conservatives know people like $harpton, Jack$on, Gay-Activists, Democrats and all Liberals. Twist the meaning of words to enforce a personal agenda. Distortion of facts and truth are automatic to these people.

It is also why it is all but useless to debate in an intelligent manner with them. No matter what is said in a statement, they will try and twist and turn it to suit their own outcome.

Witness in these comments as JohnUnderhill, responds to BrianR.
What a pathetic attempt by JohnUderhill to alter the meaning of the word "new."

No mother ,or , father in the HOME
L.B.J. and the liberal elite democrats destroyed the Black Family with the "WAR on PROVERTY" they replaced the "FATHER" with a "welfare check"
Very good article keep hitting them where it hurts elite liberal democrats can not FACE the TRUTH !!!!!!

brianR has a good point
I think he is trying to say that if we give these rights to gays then we will have to give the same rights to any one that wants to marry anything, no matter what it is. Ex. if a man wants to marry his sister. Or worse if a man wants to marry his brother he will have to be given the right to because he is just marrying his lover which is what gays want. When you marry as a man and a woman then you are creating a family and providing health and longevity to the human race. When you marry as a gay couple you marry only for your self because it can provide nothing to the rest of humanity.

Gay marriage abandons common sense
Because of the contractual nature of marriage, governments historically have not recognized marriages among mentally impaired individuals. The fact that the mental health field has not recognized the inability to incorporate one’s physiology into one’s personality as a mental illness is one of many inconsistencies that has rendered the effectiveness of psychiatry to that of shamans and witch doctors. The “special right” referred to by JohnUnderhill and BrianR is the setting aside of common sense with the legal recognition of an aberration of human nature as being “normal.”

I never had sex with that sheep?...wjc

If one believes that both Group-A (those who prefer to mate with & marry sheep) and Group-B (those who prefer not to mate & marry sheep) suffer exactly the same restrictions under current law--i.e., the prohibition against mating with & marrying sheep--then that person must also believe that were the law to be changed in favor of mating & marrying sheep, then both Group-A AND Group-B would have the same rights: Both could marry a sheep OR not marry a sheep. So, there would be nothing "special" about this new right, after all, anyone and everyone would be allowed to bed & wed a sheep. And, if it seems ridiculous for Group-B to have the right to marry a sheep (when they have absolutely no interest in sheepish relationships) then it must be equally ridiculous for Group-A to seek to change the law on the basis that Group-B would now be entitled to the same (and therefore, the NOT AT ALL "special") sheep-marrying rights granted to Group-A.

JohnUnderhill
You prove my point. No matter how you twist and distort the meaning of a conversation, the goal is always the same. To force others to accept the abnormal as normal.

You argue that a new law, passed for special interest. (homosexuals) Once past and applied to everyone is no longer "special" Well duh.--So somehow, in your mind, that makes it right. The context of this column is talking about exactly what your doing. Or did you extract a different meaning than the rest of us?

debishop before you
or anyone else marries a goat, I think it only fair to ask the goat if he wants to marry you, don't you think? And while we're at it, let's have the goat read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, just to make sure he speaks English and isn't an illegal Mexican goat. Of course I suppose illegal Mexican goats don't have rights either since rights are not really rights, they're privileges granted by the King and taken away by the King. That's why the Founding Fathers fought a Revolution, to establish constitutional republican privileges, not rights. Does anybody here know the difference between a right and a privilege?! Does anybody?! Does anyone here know where rights are derived from? Why a right is natural and inalienable? And a government granted privilege is evil and immoral and an abrogation of natural rights? We're lost, we're really lost, the day no one any longer can understand the monumental difference between natural right and government granted privilege!

alwaysquestion...
I was addressing my sheep-marrying post as rebuttal to JohnUnderhill's earlier post. I used his terms and phrases to counter his Group-A v. Group-B comparison. Sorry, if that was lost on you. I agree with you that there is confusion regarding the difference between a 'right' and a 'privilege,' however, I wasn't addressing that issue.

JohnUnderhill:
Are you a dolt?

Because currently only marriage between a one man and one woman is legal, though it's legal for EVERYBODY. Anything else is a redefinition of the institution of marriage.

Is THAT clear?

Reply to johnunderhill
Your fundamental error is in believing that all discrimination is unjust. Though you did not say that explicitly, it underlies your argument. Some laws do discriminate because they have to. For example, criminal laws are applied differently between children and adults because, though both are citizens, they are different in important ways. Society has an interest in marriage because it implies that children are likely to result, and that they have special needs best satisfied by the parents living in a committed relationship. People who can not or wish not to have children are not prevented from marrying because society recognizes the complimentary nature of men and women and that it is natural, and I underscore natural, for them to mate and establish a stable relationship, with or without children. (to be continued)

Reply to johnunderhill
Discriminating against this is unnecessary. However, Society has no innate interest in homosexual marriage because it is essentially sterile. (to be continued)

Reply to johnunderhill
It doesn't mean they can't adopt or use donors to produce children, but this is artificial and not something unique to them. (to be continued)

Reply to johnunderhill
So can heterosexuals. Furthermore, there is no natural complimentary role between man and man or woman and woman. This doesn't mean they can't love each other as friends or even have sex, but society, having no animus against friendship or control over sexual activity, has no special interest in these relationships.

(I broke this post up because I was trying to figure out what word(s) I was using the Townhall censor didn't like. Apparently, it was the "sprm" in front of "donor". Add an "e" to "sprm". WHAT A CROCK!

To JohnUnderhill:
If you ever see this post, which is doubtful as this column has fallen off the screen.

You are wrong in your response to my post. You ARE a dolt.

If you think you can prevail in an argument of logic by simply restating your same, tired, old arguments again and again and somehow... what?... the world is going to change and all of a sudden you're right and logical?

Let me tell you what that is, bud. Like Einstein said, the definition of insanity is performing the same action time after time after time and expecting a different result.

Flushed with Pride
I have to say, I hear ya, Star Parker. I haven't been this incensed since activist liberals changed the definition of a bathroom in the '60s to "a place where people of different races come to excrete waste."

To BrianR
Who writes:
"My second thought: there's no restriction on the right of gays to marry; they simply can't marry people of the same sex."

Actually, gay men are seeking the same rights as women: the right to marry a man.

But on another note, do you really want a gay man to marry your sister or daughter? It doesn't sound like the recipe for happiness.
