Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Thanks to vacancies created by last fall’s election, then-president-elect Barack Obama faced the first dramas of his administration: Finding credible, re-electable bodies to fill those seats.

Remember the good old days of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and whether or not he could legally appoint someone to replace Sen. Obama? Then there was the near-anointment of Caroline Kennedy to replace New York’s Sen. Hillary Clinton.

After much controversy, Roland Burris took Obama’s Senate seat, N.Y. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand replaced Hillary, Vice President Joe Biden’s former chief of staff, Ted Kaufman, took his place in the U.S. Senate, and Michael Bennet of Colorado now sits in Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s Senate chair.

The 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution established the direct election of U.S. senators. Each state legislature is empowered to create a system in which a governor appoints a replacement to complete a Senate term or to serve until the next special election.

Only Oregon, Massachusetts and Wisconsin do not allow their governors to appoint, thus requiring special elections. Oklahoma requires a special election with a limited exception.

Alaska, Arizona and Hawaii require their governors to appoint a replacement from the same party as the departing senator; Utah and Wyoming require their governors to appoint an interim senator from three names provided by the party with the vacancy.

Since the 17th Amendment’s adoption in 1913, 184 Senate vacancies have occurred due to deaths, expulsions or resignations. Of the 184 replacements, 64 chose not to run in the next election, 34 lost the subsequent election and 22 lost their party’s nomination; only 60 went on to win the voters’ support.

Of the four latest appointees, Delaware’s Kaufman has said he will not run; New York’s Gillibrand and Colorado’s Bennet will run. Illinois’ Burris has not announced his plans.

In addition, Robert Byrd’s Senate seat from West Virginia and Ted Kennedy’s from Massachusetts could become vacant before 2010. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick can’t appoint a senator, but West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin can – and likely would appoint himself, or resign and be appointed in a political deal.

Sort of in this category is Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania’s five-term Republican senator who switched parties this spring. Although not appointed, he has been anointed by Obama and Gov. Ed Rendell as their man; both are demanding that fellow Democrats fall in behind him.

Here’s a breakdown of how each of these anointed senators looks today:

Specter: Making it through the Democrats’ 2010 primary is a big “if.” Beltway Democrats worry about his ability to hold off an aggressive challenge from U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak of Delaware County, who will be well-funded and who doesn’t have a lot of party-primary vulnerabilities – unlike Specter, who has many. Specter needs to assure Dems that his party switch was made on principle, not calculation. And he needs to show that his seniority and his White House support will help Pennsylvanians. The economy will not weigh heavily here; this election will be all about Arlen Specter.

Burris: A disaster. His only hope is to have such a crowded primary that, as the lone African-American candidate, he consolidates African-American support – but the Dems will be careful to make sure that doesn’t happen. Burris as the nominee means the seat is as good as gone for Democrats.

Gillibrand: Had a shaky start but is a talented, tough politician who is likely to steady herself and improve her position; she also has a first-rate team. Her close polls versus Rep. Carol Maloney are largely because she is unknown. But she is a fund-raising machine, will swamp Maloney with money and use that advantage to polish her image. Maloney will run an aggressive campaign and hit her where it hurts – on guns and tobacco – but Gillibrand will prevail. The economy won’t be a factor.

Bennet: Doesn’t seem in any danger of facing a primary, but is likely to have a tough general election because Colorado is a swing state. He needs to build up his image, introduce himself to voters (most of whom don’t know who he is) and show that he can get things done for Colorado. This is where the economy could matter; voters may punish the party in power if things haven’t improved. If voters think the economy is turning around, he’ll have a much easier time.

Kaufman: Ted always was a placeholder; he will pass in favor of Biden’s son, Beau. Yet Republican Rep. Michael Castle is looking strong to win the seat. Castle is running to cap a career and to avoid a tough re-election – and the tide may be with him.

17th amendment
this abomination should be repealed.
Senators are not supposed to represent the people in their state. They are supposed to represent THE state.

17th ammendment
The drafters of the constitution showed more geinus by having legislatures produce Senators. The difference between the house and the Senate was intended for purposes not understood by the common folks. The 17th amendment was adopted when educated folks were a rarity. But, that's still true today. There is now an assault on the Electoral College by the same uninitiated folks who are the majority.
It would further diminish our constitutional democracy as created by the founding father's genius if the Electoral College was to be eliminated. But, ignorance is bliss.

Direction?
Please point us in the right direction to replace these idiots w/ true patriots/statesmen. If your state is in Constitutional crises, please ask your Tea Party to protest at the officials' local offices, and let us know how we can HELP YOU!

I will NOT sit back apathetically and let my freedoms disolve while they orgy in their new-found, communistic fantasy. Let's get busy, Folks, and defeat this insanity before obama turns our Country into a big, efeminate, impotent communist Cuba.

LORD, have mercy on us! Please go worship God today. HE's worthy of praise...not michael jackson...

AMEN!
LORD, have mercy on us! Please go worship God today. HE's worthy of praise...not michael jackson...

An excellent suggestion, Helen, and the only solution to our ills.

Why bother?
Brad: "AMEN! LORD, have mercy on us! Please go worship God today. HE's worthy of praise...not michael jackson..."

Unlike Michael Jackson, your stone-idol god has accomplished nothing.

The problem with Bennet
is that there is no one in the Republican Party in Colorado who can reach out to swing voters. Who are they going to run? Hapless Caplis? If Bill Owens comes out of retirement, he can make a run at it, but DickWad has a notoriously thin bench with which to work.

With the economy further in the tank
If dims can't be defeated then we're not working hard enough. There is no way anyone can speak with certainty that anyone will automatically win. There is every possibility that BDS and GOP leadership, like other short term 24/7 news cycles, will be a distant memory when Nov 2010 gets here. I fully expect 94 to be recreated and will do everything in my state to get more conservative locally. With Perry or Hutchison we've got a lousy immigration choice because neither one will shut down the pathway.

Don
"Unlike Michael Jackson, your stone-idol god has accomplished nothing."
Idols, and worship of them, are forbidden to Christians.

Don:
You call molesting and preying on young boys accomplishing something?

Michael Jackson's greatest accomplishment was that he demonstrated that one can change one's skin pigment from black to white is so desired.

Ms. Zito
In every state, in the Union, Republicans are attempting to design the 2010 ballot. They are trying to create new Counties and new Cities. They are putting rights on the ballots, which are acts of redundancy. Unfortunately, they have no "Issues" which have resonated with the "Voters". The republican party must find a way to change the "Game". Without a game changing strategy, republicans will become the first casualties of "Hope"! Politics in America have "Changed". 2010 will pose a single question for republicans and their candidates; Has the Republican Party "Changed"? Based on that single question, I give the party a 30% chance? Conservatives rarely "Change", it would be "Sacrilegious" to even try.

Fuggedaboutit in NJ
The *people* couldn't do any worse electing senators than what the idiot legislators in this state do every day they're in session. They could as soon appoint Michael Jackson's chimp as anyone worth sending to DC to rep. the State.

The only good thing about the nonsense going on in NY's senate is it overshadows the stupidiy that normally passes for public discourse here.

killer the clown shows up
so the fool who claims he is a graduate of hahvad where the average iq exceeds 180.

That is except for fellow graduates, swimmer kennedy, flap ears the fool, heinz-kerry and of course killer himself.

But like all the phoney elitists who join with the dims because they fully believe that education alone gives the right to rule over other, killer proves that by intelligence alone he is totally unsuited for the job.

But also like all elitist killer is that stupid that he sees nothing wrong with more gov't intrusion over the lives of american and it's citizens.

Like all the trolls killer has never voiced objections to the huge deficits of his messiah and savior, killer seems fully in lock step with the cap and trade that will raise trillions in new fees and taxes as well as place hundreds of new regulations on the citizenry

So killer the clown, how exactly does more and bigger gov't benefit america. But then again you probably look forward to having your life controlled by big brother, b hussein obamarxist and his soon to be appointed hundreds of czars

The Secret to Winning in 2010!!!
Check out this blogger, and you will be HOOKED. http://www.theblacksphere.net He is refreshing, and his book is AWESOME! Talk about changing the conservative and Republican landscape!

Don
The Christian God has never been based on a stone idol; that would be the muslims, who bow to a rock in Mecca, dolt.

Arlen Specter

The nice thing about Arlen running as a Democrat is I can now vote against him.

I have been waiting years for this opportunity.

Scrap Iron
I agree that the 17th amendment should be repealed. The constitution set us up as a union of states. The House represented the states by population. These were voted by the peoople in the state with the states with more people having more Representives. The Senators were to represent the state governments with an equal number for each state. This was meant to limit the control of the federal government.

Stuck

The one thing I used to envy the Brits for was that the PM did not have a specific term - they could kick him out whenever the wanted to.

The problem with that is - the party picks the PM and the party has too much control. The Brits are now complaining about their government like crazy.

At least though, they don't have a dictator. Wonder if they'll come over and rescue us as we helped (better late than never) in WWII?

Credible? Gun Control H.R. 45!
Gun Control in America under the radar: Go to any government website and type in HR 45 or google HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm Licenseing & Record of Sales Act of 2009.

Allegedly this will make it illegal to own a firearm or any rile with a clip or any pistol unless it is registered; you are fingerprinted, you supply a current driver's license, social security number, submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any time of their choosing etc. - a must read - according to news reports on the web by credible reporters. Check it out -

This means that the government and the criminals will have guns if they continue to take away all rights to guns little by little through laws under the guise of for your protection but really appear to be trampling on all of the rights of the American people - who voted in these people?

Let's Talk for Real

We have let the useless parties lead us by the noses to elect their preferred candidates.

We supposedly could say "we" the people elected them, but who pushed them to the fore? Whose approval let them know it was okay to run, and okay to be president? Who helped them raise money from the true backers (not people on the net as one liar claims)?

We need to stop being sheep. We need to select our own candidates before the politicians do. Select someone with brains, character and statesmanship instead of self-serving political cunning.

I have a new blog on the subject, if you are interested. "The March of Mind". The comment section kept telling me I was too long winded so "blog." Which I did.

http://patfromtexas.blogtownhall.com

The three traitors who voted krap and
trade in NJ will have to tough time getting re-elected.

An entire tea party was held at the Hamilton office of Chris Smith. LoBiondo and McHugh will have hard times, too. Live by the sword, die.

My tea party was in Jackson, NJ, about 1000-15000 people, many from the Belmar march on 4/15 (that about 3-400). Many signed up for buses to DC Sept. 12.

Go to tea parties in DC Sept. 12 and let's show the thugs in the White House a million people on the mall.

That should be 1000-1500
not 15000. Sorry.

renny
at the tea party in gilbert, az there were 2500-3000.

There were a variety of speakers all addressing the dangers the dims and flap ears present to our freedoms.

But the one interesting part was the call for some people calling themselves the arizona rangers. They led the participants taking the oath to defend the united states and the constitution.

Too bad such oaths of office are meaningless to flap ears and the congressional dims who are marching in lock step with the wannabe dictator, trying to destroy this country to implement socialism

Reliable applicants wanted
Ms. Zito,
Obama doesn't know any credidable applicants to refill the vacancies. All those he is familiar with are the scrapings from the bottom of the barrel of humanity.

Darrell
Of course he's got people he can appoint, all they need is a criminal past or a resume' enhancing tax cheating "problem"..or is that "Mistake." And if he runs out of applicants he can always turn to the DemonRAT majority for suggestions.

Michae/Scrapiron..Exactly. It's been a disaster, but it was passed in the days when the people were gullibly trusting their political party hacks..ooh wait a minute..what year was that? 2008?? These Senators instead of representing their states as the Founders designed it, they become king and queenlets representing only themselves, while looking down their noses at the great unwashed. No more Mr Smith's going to Washington and being naive enough to believe the Constitution. They don't even fillabuster like they used to, now it's just a silly sham.
