Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Ohio has a political-identity crisis. Is it a “blue state,” as demonstrated by Democrats’ statewide wins in 2006 and 2008, or a “red state” that is just fed up with the behavior of its former Republican elected officials?

“Well, it's more like an orange state,” said Bert Rockman, a political scientist from Purdue University.

Ohio, Rockman explains, is mostly up for grabs: “Through gerrymandering – and, yes, both parties do it – Republicans had for some time a lock on the state legislature and, therefore, a lock on the state's congressional delegation.”

That's changed some, precipitated by the misfortunes during Republican Gov. Bob Taft’s administration and by the difficult economic climate that Ohio, like other industrial Midwestern states, has suffered.

*** Special Offer ***

Democrats do well in the cities; Republicans do well in small towns and rural parts of the state. The suburbs are up for grabs; they lean more Republican around Cincinnati with more Democratic near Columbus.

Look at Columbus for how the state will go: It is a formerly Republican middle-class city that is now mainly Democratic; its typically well-off suburbs are still mainly Republican but trending lately toward Democrats.

“Generally speaking,” Rockman says, “despite much malarkey about Reagan Democrats, the Democrats have consistently held onto their working-class base” in the state.

This week, a former Republican congressman from Ohio, John Kasich, announced he will take on Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland next year. The ebb-and-flow of that race in many ways will reflect the mood of the country and whether or not the Democrats’ revolution of 2008 has legs.

Strickland’s counterpart in Pennsylvania, Gov. Ed Rendell, is a great admirer of Kasich (a Pittsburgh native) and calls him one of his favorite Republicans. Yet he says, predictably, that Strickland deserves to be re-elected.

“Ted has done a fabulous job in Ohio,” Rendell said, explaining that a governor’s role is to create an environment for job development, job growth and job retention – three marks he says Strickland has hit.

Statewide, Strickland is better-known. He comes from southern Ohio and is, as Democrats go, fairly conservative – though undoubtedly less so than Kasich.

Rockman anticipates this will be a real horserace: “A lot may depend upon whether voters think well of the current presidential administration … as well as what they think of Strickland, who still seems to be doing okay.

“Kasich will be a formidable opponent. … (He’s) an adept compromiser, across party lines on certain issues. If he doesn't make it, it will not be for lack of effort.”

Democratic strategist John Lapp of Ralston-Lapp sees it differently. “Look, you have a Republican field of throwbacks; Kasich is easily identifiable as a (Newt) Gingrich throwback.”

He believes Ohio Democrats have the better bench now and in the future, making Ohio a reliable blue state for perhaps generations.

The country is at a particular moment in time in which people are becoming more comfortable with a protective – and inevitably bigger – government than with a smaller one, which breeds longevity for Democrats.

Yet with big-government love comes the fact that someone has to pay for it, meaning taxpayers.

So what strengths do Strickland and Kasich bring to their showdown?

An ordained minister, Strickland is non-ideological; he won traditional Democratic constituencies in northeast Ohio and the big cities but also did well in Ohio’s Appalachian region. His appeal seemed broad in 2006, but that could have resulted in part from the scandals unfolding within Taft's administration.

Kasich, on the other hand, has dual appeal: A son of working-class parents, he is very tight on fiscal matters and pretty conventionally Republican in rhetoric. Tremendously buoyant, he has a genuine empathy for working people and the insecurities afflicting industrial workers.

Republican Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, told the Trib that Kasich’s candidacy will instantly instigate a debate over how Ohio is losing people, losing industry and raising taxes and how Ohioans must reverse that process.

“John Kasich was a reformer long before it became popular,” Boehner said. “He understands what needs to be done to enact real change in Ohio.”

How this goes is anyone’s guess, says Rockman: “It will hinge a lot on whom voters blame for the bad economic tidings in the state.

“… At this point, I think Strickland is likely to have the edge, but we are a long way from the election.”

Private Property Is A Myth
Justice Anthony Kennedy provided the deciding vote in the Kelo case that removed the last vestiges of private property rights in the US. Only by seceding from the US can the Constitution and private property rights be restored.

Wrong Column

Is this Ms Zito's column or Mr Jacob's? The exact same column is there.

Zito's actual article can be read here:

What is in her spot is Paul Jacob's article.
Someone's been asleep at the cut and paste slot.

THIS is Paul Jacob's article.

Historic Preservation
A cure for this mania for historic preservation would be a law requiring the historic deciders to pay all taxes and upkeep on property they declare hisoric. Bill D.

No Way
Kasich doesn't have a chance. He will be utterly crushed when he goes against Strickland.

Ohio is firmly a blue state now and will be for the rest of our lives. It is an Appalachian state with high taxes and a declining productive class. Much of the population is on some sort of disability or other government subsidy. Young, well educated and skilled citizens leave Ohio immediately after graduation because of its shrinking employment opportunites and high taxes.

All of this is borne out by statistics and by observation. Drive around the state and you will see the many signs of decay.

Kasich is a weak candidate. Do not be fooled by the fact he substitutes for Bill OReilly on national TV. He is not very intelligent, nor is he strong and courageous. Like 95% of elected GOP white men, he's an invertebrate with no convictions for which he'll stand erect and fight. Like GOP men he occassionaly may slip and make a declarative statement, but when challenged will default to the white boy two step, white boy back step, and white boy apology and grovel.

I would suggest that Strickland not even bother to campaign, just raise funds that he can give to other candidates or that he can simply invest in his own retirement account.

And the GOP would do well to simply write Ohio off like they've done California or New York. Don't waste your time, GOP. Sit back and sip your gin and tonics at the club after your squash games and talk about short term interest rates.

Mr. Duval is correct
there is nothing historic about his barns. Sixty years is not historical. They are utilitarian and have gone past their usefulness. Ohio is covered with dilapitated farm buildings. Mr. Duval should call the Fire Marshal and have the buildings declared a fire hazard. Let the government bureaucrats duke it out with the pushy and nosey Historical preservation members. Do they delight in causing an old man grief? What if one of his great grand childrena are injured or killed in a fire in one of those old barns. Those old buildings go up in seconds. I want to see the names of the people on this Historical Preservation Committee. Are any of them personally gaining monetarily by forcing Mr. Duval to hold onto these buildings? Lawyers perhaps? The people in this county need to stand up and be counted. Stop being bullied. Perhaps Mr. Duvall can be a hero at ninety and defeat the monsters.

JD's
There are alot of great people in Ohio still. The Blue people are wrong for OHIO. Kasich will not get in bed with Planned Parenthood, homos, or the gambling idustry. He will not force the socialist ideology and sex upon our children in school. He will cut taxes which will bring jobs back to Ohio. He believes in fiscal responsibility. Although he does have a heart for the poor. Which I do not believe is the job of the government. He many try to use the government to help the poor. Is this spreading the wealth around or giving some a leg up? Kasich may not be a perfect man. But he is not an evil man. Strickland is a masked amoral creep with corrupt ideas for education. Ohio is the best State in the Union. I will not stand by and watch Strickland and that horrible Secretary of State Brunner, who threw the election to OBAMA, destroy Ohio.

JD I have found that most men are not willing to stick their necks out. I will have to settle for a good man at this point in history. We don't need to run a politician whose followers believe in conspiracy theories.

Strickland sucks
His admin. said app. two weeks ago that Ohio has lost more tax revenue than " expected " ??
what a bunch of...idiots..Like I could have told them that back in Nov. duh... And now Gov. Strickland is saying that he will have to " raise " taxes to help cover the loss. yet he is unwilling to cut state wages, working hr.'s or benifits to any of the the states employee unions. It is going to fall on us tax payers to bail out Ohio.
Just like mayor Colman of Columbus Ohio is saying that we have to raise taxes or else he will have to cut 200 pollice and fireman jobs..
Gob forbid that he and city council should take pay & benifit cuts. or maybe cut back on the " intitilment programs that don't give as big a bang for our buck...
And you all remember Mr. Colman don't you?? A dem. mayor who took $259 million from Mr. Obama, had a wonderfull photo opt. here & saved those poor 29 police /cadet jobs back a couple of months ago, he wasn't saying a thing then about haveing to raise taxes...

OHIO would be
lucky to have John Kasich. Send him over here to California if you Ohioans are not bright enough to snatch him up. :)

Thinker;
I'll gladly send ya " Strickland " his thinking is along the lines that Cali is use to.. ya now, just give money to illegals & medical help { free ofcourse } to illegals, grovle at unions feet. kiss the arse of the biggest money bags..

virus from this article
I got a trojan implanted in my computer when I opened this article and up popped a scurilous website called "truthaboutjohnkasich.com" chock full of a bunch of smears. I can't believe the frauds who concoct this sort of thing could ever hope to persuade anyone with these kind of sleazy tactics. But it is probably what we will come to expect when Obama takes over the internet.

wrong article?
I just went to the realclearpolitics link posted by heyteachkp at 7:26am and it looks exactly like this article.

John Kasich is a halcyon choice.

I wrote repeatedly in the run-up to the McCain Veep choice, that Mr. Kasich was the selection that would promote victory in 2008.

Kasich has lift. He can motivate, using what Ms. Zito herein calls his buoyancy, without creating frenzy and antagonism.

He's an American natural ... he's likeable. He has attributes that are Ronald Reagan like apart from his alignment to the Reagan political philosophy.

Because Mr. Strickland is a strong executive, the race between Kasich and the sitting governor will put into play philosophy of governance, over character and fitness to hold office.

This will be a clear comparison for the State of Ohio and the nation of the choices presented between the collectivist and meddlesome politics of the Democrats and the liberating, pro-growth and sobriety of the Republicans as exemplified by Mr. Kasich.

JD's handsome son - are you kidding me?
You dare to say that Republicans make no declarative statements and will not stand up for anything, when your "President" - B. Hussein Obama has YET to make a declarative statement and has YET to stand for anything except making America look like the worst nation that ever existed in the history of the World. You lying liberals never, EVER take accountability for anything, never stand for anything except your own filthy self interests, chief among which is America-bashing. As to Strickland, his platitudes and preacher-esque style of speech delivery will not save the lack of leadership and substance that he, as a Democrat, embodies and exemplifies. Strickland, while not liberal, still is a baseless Democrat, just like Obama - watch them both crumble in the light of fact and leadership.

Out of Ohio
My spouse and I lived in Ohio for several years and left as soon as we could retire. Taxes were high and going up...up...up to support entitlement payments, construction of various buildings and recreational facilities in disadvantaged areas, etc. Property taxes kept rising for new schools with all the bells and whistles and for higher pay to attract the best teachers, but academic progress seemed to lag while the athletic and extracurricular activities flourished. These situations seem typical nation-wide, not just in Ohio. But we found a retirement area with much lower taxes that has the essential services that a community requires.

Our children graduated from college while we lived in Ohio. They left Ohio to find jobs.

Strickland is a decent man but has the entitlement and empathy beliefs that drain the State's ability to provide an environment where its people can prosper. I hope Kasich's candidacy will turn that around.

For the good of Ohio
Stricktland should support Kasich.

Results
Kasich was one of the key individuals that balanced the federal budget that Bill Clinton often takes credit for.

The budget was balanced,I believe, after three veto's and a governmental shut down.

Good guy, not a nut job and well spoken.

Kasich term limits
Back i 94 Kasich ran on term limits and was one of the few Republicans that stood by his pledge.Kasich could still be in congress if he chose to.We need more like him.

Now hear ye this!!!
You can have Strickland. I'm a "Chrisstian Right, Reagan Republican!

I found he reference to 1 Samuel interesting, so I dug up the quote...

6 But the thing hdispleased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel iprayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for jthey have not rejected you, but kthey have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and lshow them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king. 11 And he said, m“This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your nsons and appoint them for his own ochariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. 12 He will pappoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 And qhe will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. 16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest 1young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. 18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord rwill not hear you in that day.”

What I have noticed
coming back to OHIO are amazing government buildings. And the private sector closing down. Time to lower corporate taxes and shrink government by 75%.

Strickland is not a decent man
He is bed with Planned Parenthood.

JD
What load of ignorant parasitic crap!

Blame the successful for the problems of the state.

Unionist! Parasite! Leech! Sluggard!

Tedmug and ReaganRepublican
Tedmug and ReaganRepublican. You two stupid mother effers. Go back and reread my post, morons. You products of incest mongoloid retards. You give conservatives a bad name. No wonder the communists think we're dumb.

You dummies typify why Ohio is going down the tubes. No wonder the GOP is dying.

I like John Kasich...
he's an honorable man. Ohio could do a lot worse than to elect him Governor. Send him to Washington state if you don't want him...the conservatives here would welcome him!

J.D.
I read what you wrote a couple of times and it still sounds like you like the fact that, for now, Ohio is a blue state. It also sounds like you think there isn't a republican conservative left. I also think your opine is full of the brown wet steamy stuff!
