Turnout will drive PA 2010 Senate race

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

As with anything involving Pennsylvania politics, it’s complicated.

Much of Pennsylvania’s 2010 U.S. Senate race will depend on turnout in the primary and general elections.

Sounds obvious, right? Yet in an odd turn of political and geographical shifts, the Senate candidates will have little control over the outcome.

That is largely because of fiercely competitive primary races on both sides – for Republicans, incumbent Arlen Specter versus former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey; for Democrats, state Rep. Josh Shapiro versus former Philadelphia deputy mayor Joe Torsella.

In the middle, all of the traditional party organizations will concentrate more of their money and most of their bodies on the governor’s race.

An increased turnout will help Specter in the primary. Yet his voters need one really important thing: motivation to show up at the polls. The governor’s race just might be that motivation.

Toomey’s voters will come out, no matter what. Yet to win, Toomey needs to run a solid campaign with an adult at the helm dictating strategy, not ideology.

Governor's races are defined by the personality of the candidates; voters want to like, know and trust the person who is their governor.

Issues, however, drive federal legislative races.

That helps Specter in a general election but hurts him big-time in the primary. He is seen by the general electorate as a moderate who is not driven by ideology, which is why he was comfortable flip-flopping on the union card-check issue for the short term.

The four clear, credible candidates for the U.S. Senate, in a nutshell:

Specter: A known commodity and the state’s most dominant political figure over the past 30 years. Others have come and gone, but with a lot of luck in many close elections, Arlen remains. People don't love him, but many grudgingly respect his seniority. His vulnerability is spending – and if the primary and general races are defined by earmarks and Washington’s culture of corruption, he’s in big, big trouble: He is a master of inside-politics, willing to spend, and never has been in the lower-taxes, smaller-government crowd.

Toomey: A credible, younger challenger with a clear message on earmarks and spending. However, he is not a great orator and has not proven himself able to motivate people beyond the front-bench believers who are with him because he isn't Arlen.

Think of a packed church on Easter Sunday, when everyone in the congregation sees themselves as “saints”:

Those up front are there every week for every service; Toomey has already captured them because he isn't Arlen.

Those in the mid-pews are excited to learn more about the guy, but Toomey has not yet convinced them. (This is the key to his poor performance in Central Pennsylvania's conservative “T” when he ran against Specter in 2004; he needs them to win, and they want to follow him – but they need a reason.)

Those in the back pew are only there because it’s a holiday; they’ll vote in 2010, and Arlen has their votes because he’s the known commodity.

Shapiro: Clearly an overall good candidate, he appeals to Arlen's base for money and votes and could be seen as a newer model at a time when voters are looking for a trade-in. He appears to have only one problem: He’s a member of the Pennsylvania House, the absolutely worst recruiting spot right now. But Shapiro has done a good job of defining himself as a reformer and an outsider in the statehouse culture of never-ending corruption.

Torsella: A proven fundraiser, known in the Philly establishment as an all-around good guy, but he ran a lackluster, mismanaged congressional primary against Rep. Allison Schwartz that he should have won. At this point, it’s hard to see him beating Shapiro.

One wildcard is State Auditor General Jack Wagner, the only Democrat who won more Pennsylvania votes than Barack Obama in November 2008. Wagner getting into this race is plausible, but the smart money still is on Shapiro.

Can any of these potential challengers take out Arlen with an anti-spending, anti-corruption message? Will the stimulus vote be a plus or a minus for Arlen? How much will Obama help the primary-winning Democrat, since Specter has handed him several key votes in the U.S. Senate?

All of these unknowns will make this 2010 race of particular national interest.

PA is a Dem state
I doubt there are any credible politicos that truly think PA will go to a Republican in the Senate race or the governor's race in 2010. It was like McCain declaring certain states would be competitive and hoping that was enough to make it so. If Specter gets through the primary he will probably keep the seat in Republican hands. Otherwise, the state tends to vote Democratic for governors and Senators. It is what it is. Republicans that think Specter is too liberal will be even less thrilled with the Democratic alternative if Toomey comes out of the primary as the winner. Reality Bites sometimes.

Never buck the odds......
Being a PA native and former area chairman in the GOP I need to weigh in here. PA is a moderate state that swings back and forth. The 60's and 70's were Democrat , 80's and 90's GOP . BUT the governors race has a clear pattern which has been true all of my life.....PA voters switch parties every 8 years . Count on it. Let's take my lifetime: 1954 and 58-Leader and Lawrence (D); 1962 and 66- Scranton and Schafer(R) ; 1970 and 74 -Shapp(D) ; 1978 and 82 -Thornburgh(R) ; 1986 and 90 - Casey(D) ; 1994 and 98 - Ridge(R) and finally 2002 and 06 -Rendell(D). Never bet against the trends. The line should be telling you something. PS......I'm glad that I live in Texas.

We've Seen the Movie
But we know the script. We know how congressional elections will turn out from now on.

The race will be hotly contested. Millions, mabe billions, of dollars will flood in. The media will give us up to the second reports and all sorts of hypotheses, speculations, what ifs, pundits, and verbal food fights on TV. It will go on for weeks.

We will be told this or that election is a referendum on Barack, a referendum on the GOP. Is this the end of Barack's meteoric rise in popularity? Is this the beginning of a GOP resurgence? On and on and on and on it will go.

Then the results will come in and it will be a tie. . . except, of course, for the absentee ballots. They will be counted, recounted, recounted and litigated.

Finally, the liberal or democrat candidate will win by 75 votes.

And then the post election speculation, arguing, debating, wailing and whining by Sean Hannity will go on and on and on and. . . .

National Interest--My Interest
I am watching to see if Americans will keep voting for the best of two evils.

Or are they looking for principled men. Are they asking principled questions. Joe the Plumber asked a principled question, about his freedom.

When will other Americans stand up and ask principled questions, when will they demand principled answered questions.

This is not about weather one gets this or that. Unless your for government rights over individual rights and freedom. Then it is only how big will government will be. Ruling over the land for the majority/mob rule.

Voter fraud
It doesn't matter here in the land of Fast Eddie Rendell who wins anything. This next go around the Dems will win again. ACORN is rampant here and just in Philly alone the vote count was 104%--4 points more than all of the registered voters. Murtha won but was behind in the polls 20 points. Obama won every county on the western side of the state when McCain was leading in every county but one.

Hugo Chavez, or at least his voting machines, is alive and well in PA.

Yeah, konniebay
If I remember correctly there was the lasting image of Black Panthers "guarding" the voting booths in Philadelphia in November. And how do those Pittsburgh people go into a booth and vote for that scumbag Murtha? Its like they see the dims waving yellow and black towels or something. I mean Philly is a given with their track record since 1776 but Pittsburgh?

Pat Toomey Can CleanRINO Specter's Clock

The Quinnipiac Poll released March 27th has Toomey beating Specter 41 Percent to 27 Percent among Registered Republicans.

Toomey has the money and backing to take down The Perennial RINO Arlen Specter.

Specter is Toast.

Finding New Voters
Yes, ACORN or some other action group was alive and well here in Pittsburgh too!! They went to the Allegheny County Jail and registered over 500 new Democrat voters for the 2008 election. Because if they haven't been "convicted" of anything "yet", they had a right to vote. And, they were given absentee ballots in case they were still incarcerated on election day. But, the Democrats somehow find a way to fight the absentee ballots of our service people deployed overseas....

Tim
I'll wager that if (BIG IF) Pat Toomey wins the primary, He'll lose by 10 points.

The exact same margin that Santorum lost by!!!

The Demos know
that Acorn will deliver dead voters to them and President Zero knows that they will deliver the next election to him. They have long given up on earning the votes of the "middle". I hope that Toomey can win but it will have to be by an overwhelming margin to overcome this kind of banana republic FRAUD.

Consider this
Specter is a RINO who got GWB's support for some reason nobody has been able to guess, since Specter stabbed him in the back before and after that election. He didn't win by that much in the primary.
Fast Eddie "Slots" Rendell and the democ-rats in the Legislature officially made PA THE VOTER FRAUD STATE by officially sanctioning fraudulent votes. This was before ACORN moved in. Hopefully, conservative voters will be out in force, and former Obamba voters will have realized that the Obambacrats have totally screwed them, and they will vote conservative.

Ron
How could a conservative win in Pa.? You just said it is officially the "voter fraud" state.
So no con could ever win, right?

rw cons in Pa. WERE out in force in Dec. of 2008. About 20 to 25% of the Pa voters.

A republican (like Specter) can win the seat. A con won't have a chance. See Santorum Nov 2006 for the expected results of a Toomey run against ANY Dem.

Up Here WILLIEE,BACI Wrightwrong52 !

You'll wager with what ?

Your wife's check ?

Heh,Heh !

But again , I digress.
Joshie Shapiro is a " Who He ? " Specter Wannabe.

Torsella is a Non-Starter.

Toomey ,who just stepped down as The President of The Club For Growth, has The Financial Backing .Financial Creds,Congressional Creds.

You're Blowin' Smoke !

I'll Be BACHHH !

right down here Timmy boy!
once again who is Williee and Baci?
Others who you disagree with?
I ALWAYS post with Wrightswrong52 (the right is wrong!!)

My money's is good and so is my wifes. Will you be betting with your mom's money? Your Dad's? Do you still live at home, btw?

No smoke, just results.
Once again, look at how rw cons have done in 2006 in pa? in 2008 in pa?

Why would 2010 be any different?

Anyone But Specter
I'd predict Arlen Specter is going to be RETIRED. Americans needed him to stand firm with those who opposed the porkulus package and the rest of the insanity. Arlen Specter betrayed the Constitution and all America-loving Americans. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins will also have a mountain of opposition when running for reelection.

A Dem friend of mine worked for Spector
he was really impressed with him. A Republican, no doubt, but without all of the crazy nuttery of a Santorum. My friend claimed Spector wasa very intelligent man, even when he disagreed with Spectors decisions or votes.

A loon like Santorum disn't have a chance in PA because he was so crazy that even the Cons knew it. Santorum claimed medical lawsuits were the cause of high medical costs (if 5% means that much, then he was correct... nerver mind the 30% going to CEO overhead) and then his wife successfully sued for well over the limit he screamed about. Hypocrite.

Santorum also successfully bilked the state out of money for his children's cyber school when he didn't live in the state. Loser. He also had a temper tantrum when he claimed an opponent did not live in the state, all the while owning property he never even visited.

Can you blame other Cons for ousting him? Sensible Republicans will keep Spector because he is intelligent. Cons will vote for the looney Right and continue to lose.

Get Rid Of Specter
Specter must GO ! Toomey is by far the better candidate. Specter is now and always has been unreliable and not to be trusted. If you vote for him it is the same as a vote for a democrat. At least with a democrat you pretty much know what you're getting (liberal crap), with Specter you get someone who "speaks with a forked tongue"

Yeah Your Down There Wrightwrong WILLIEE

So,how long have You been livin' off your old lady's money and blowin' it gamblin' ?

Hmmmmmm Obamaboy ?

As far as The Pennsylvania Senate Rece is concerned ,Real Conservative Pat Toomey can take down RINO Specter and then step on Little No Name Joshie Specter Wannabe.

You Blow Smoke Out Your Bum,Lib Bum !

Dim Tim
No gambler here home boy (do you sleep in he basement?)

Specter wins if he wins the primary.

Toomey loses EVEN IF Murtha the Dem candidate, rw drone!

In any case it will not be a conservative. Bet your basement room on it. Because you don't have a house.

Hey wrongsrong52: You DIDN'T ANSWER THE

QUESTION!!!!!!!!

Explain the DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BHO's "redistribution of wealth" and Marx' "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

We're waiting.... hehehehe

Wrightswrong,WILLIEE,BACI !

Well Porch Boy,You run your mouth about Harrah's and don't gamble .
That makes You Bullcrap.

You hawk TH, a Conservative Web Site and seek out negative attention.

That makes You Bullcrap !

You're Self-Created Bullcrap !

Deal with It,Sad Sack !

Specter is now a long shot to win The Republican Primary, because Toomey leads among Registered Republicans 41 Percent to 27 Percent.

Ya can't beat Former Pennsylvania Congressman Pat Toomey with Little Joshie Whatsawhosit.

Reply to JD's Handsome Son....

"whining by Sean Hannity will go on and on and on and...."

lol...you crack me up.....lol

Ron_PA: Excuse me, but Specter is

NOT a RINO.

He's a dem-o-crat who's cleverly disguised as a RINO!

And with a little luck he'll be promoted to an out of work politician.

Specte has to go
He has proven beyond a shadow of doubt he is no longer worthy. Who ever is running that belives in the constitution, smaller government, and less taxation should get the vote. Regardless of party.

2010 Senate Race
Unlike California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona (and soon to be Texas), Pennsylvania's demographics have not for the foreseeable future made it impossible for a conservative Republican to now be elected. Illegal immigration turned a state that was quite capable of electing conservative Republicans (California with Reagan as governor and President) -- to one where the GOP has almost no chance in a Presidential race. In other ways, the GOP has damaged itself in PA. Specter is running -- forgetting Toomey there is stil a pretty good chance that he will not be running in a year from now. Specter is in his 80s and has had multiple serious medical scares over the recent past. The GOP has performed very badly in recent years for the GOP (See Rendell v. Fisher, Casey v. Santorum and Rendell v. Swann). It would be tough for Toomey to be elected over a generic Democrat since Pennsylvania has not have a recent good track record in supporting conservative GOP members in state wide races (Ridge and Specter were not conservatives -- and Santorum was crushed). If Specter wins the primary, he will likely win the election though.

Not about this col. But truth on pirates
From a former Sailor (a cousin):

Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday, I asked why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:

1. Obama wouldn't authorize the Naval Special Warfare Command SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours, going against Onsite Commander (on scene commander) recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, Obama imposed restrictions on their Rules of Engagement that they couldn't do anything unless the hostage's life was in "imminent" danger
3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the pirates all sighted in, but could not fire due to Rules of Engagement restriction.
4. When the navy Rubber Inflatable Boat came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to Rules of Engagement restrictions. As the pirates were shooting at the Rubber Inflatable Boat, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.
5. Obama specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge Captain and SEAL teams.
6. The Bainbridge Captain and SEAL team Commander finally decide they have the Operations Area and Onsite Commander authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead pirates.
7. Obama immediately claims credit for his "daring and decisive" behavior. As usual with him, it's BS.

feargalx
Santorum was beaten with lots and lots of money from outside the state. And look at Pennsylvania and you will find that except for 6 of the counties every other one is majority Republican. So just don't go right off the Republican party with your supposed brilliance. Your analysis would be helpful if you had the slightest clue what you were talking about. But of course then again another liberal on the loose.

renny
Great information! Thanks!

I suspected as much - more restriction than response.

While Obamaton is taking the bows, it's the military, that he's cutting funding back on amidst his obscene spending orgy, that really deserves ALL the credit.

While everyone is now imagining a more decisive anti-pirate role to be taken by this two faced professional prevaricator, B. Hussein's preparing to appease even further. It's a wonder he hasn't apologized to the Somali pirates...and sent reparations.

Obsessed with Specter
Zito sure is obsessed with keeping Specter in the senate. She's using this space to praise and divert the focus away from what a reptilian toad Specter really is: literally, figuratively, and politically.

She keeps trying to make a case for him when there isn't one to be made. Even people that have supported him wonder why he's running at all. Is he really so obsessed with power that he can't imagine the senate continuing on without him. His hubris is overwhelming.

He's had several bouts with cancer and he looks it - like death warmed over. When he speaks, he sounds like he's croaking, or choking on sand paper.

As to Toomey's public speaking - he a great public speaker: articulate, polished and personable.

Zito, forget it. If you're looking for a ticket to the big time, get yourself another sponsor to promote and PR for.

Anne
Re Specter:

"NOT a RINO.

He's a dem-o-crat who's cleverly disguised as a RINO!"

________________
You may not know how right you are. It was just an accident of chance that he initially ran as a republican for the senate seat. He would have preferred to run as a democrat but that wasn't an option.

And the reason he survives is that he consistently pols higher among democrats that republicans.

His presence in the republican party is like having a spy/saboteur in your army.

He's trying to sweet talk the republicans with opposition to the so called 'card check' (or the vote the way the union tells you or we know where you live) Act.

However, in the final analysis, it would be much better for the republicans if he were beaten in the PA primary and the seat eventually lost to the dhimmis.

Note: given what B. Hussein has been so far, I don't discount the possibility that Toomey might eventually appeal to even the Christian left.

Operation Chaos PayBack

In that spirit of good clean Redblooded All-American Fun so successfully championed by Limbaugh and the Dittoes, I plan to register as a Republican to vote for Specter in the primary.

That will make the general election a win-win for me. I might even vote for Specter over Shapiro. Both are competent and intelligent, which matter to me far more than party affiliation, but Specter offers Pennsylvania the power of his seniority.

People in Pennsylvania
I beg of you not to send Arlen Specter back to Washington. We need to throw our all the incumbents especially those whose living has depended on being reelected. He is great if you like a wishy-washy person in office, but right not we need real leaders and Arlen Specter is not one of them. He's a good finger moistener.
