Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- The party of Ronald Reagan is alive and well, and it includes the voices of Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee -- even “Joe the Plumber.”

That was the message out of the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, the annual conservative conference historically held at the Omni Shoreham hotel here.

Gingrich, the retired House speaker and conservative guru, said this year’s CPAC, which ended Saturday, was the largest in three decades, with nearly 9,000 attendees.

"Conservatives certainly have more a lot more energy, creativity and ideas this year opposing the Obama agenda than they sure did supporting the Bush administration," said Charlie Gerow, a Harrisburg-based media strategist. Gerow is on the board of the American Conservative Union, which sponsors CPAC.

Not confined by the Bush political message or machine, conservatives are freer to explore a better way to lead and govern the country, Gerow said.

Meeting the past three days in the shadows of a Democrat-controlled White House and Congress, attendees debated what it means to be a conservative in the era of President Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

After losing the 2006 congressional midterm and 2008 presidential elections, they did not lack for debate over how to make conservatism relevant again.

President Obama's near-$800 billion economic stimulus package and newly proposed $3.6 trillion budget prompted plenty of discussion as well.

Internet technology was the big buzz here, as bloggers lined the hotel’s lobbies and halls, reporting and “Twittering” conference details.

"The biggest thing that Republicans should avoid is to become the party of no," said Mark Siegel, a D.C.-based Democratic strategist.

Siegel, who served in the Carter administration and has advised Democratic candidates during their own lean years, offered Republicans unsolicited advice: Instead of always saying “no” to Obama, Pelosi and Reid, a better approach for them is to say, "yes, but ... ."

CPAC’s conservative all-star line-up included Gingrich, former Republican governors Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Mike Huckabee of Arkansas; conservative radio talk-show giant Rush Limbaugh, and Joe Wurzelbacher, the Ohio plumber who became a last-minute slogan of the 2008 race. Romney won a straw poll as best GOP candidate for 2012.

All were crammed into the three days of speeches and break-out strategizing sessions intended to energize and renew the conservative movement.

Missing were last year’s GOP presidential ticket, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Alaska’s Gov. Sarah Palin, and George W. Bush, the titular head of the conference for the past eight years of his presidency.

"With the exception of Sarah Palin, McCain and Bush are now part of our past," said Maroof Ali, a conference attendee from Long Island, N.Y.

Ali, a pre-med student at New York’s Stonybrook University, said Palin would have been “the rock-star” of the conference if she had attended.

"Conservatives have plenty of energy and ideas for the future," he insisted. "In the era of Obama, Pelosi and Reid, we need to be more than the party of ‘no,’ and we also can't be an opposition party -- that would marginalize anything we wanted to achieve."

Gingrich entered the hall packed Friday with nearly 1,000 college Republicans in attendance, shaking their hands along the way as "Eye of the Tiger" provided background music.

He challenged President Obama’s attorney general, Eric Holder, who described Americans as "essentially a nation of cowards" on racial issues during a recent speech to Justice Department employees.

"We now have more than enough evidence of what this administration thinks of the American people," Gingrich said. "Let me say to Attorney General Holder: I welcome the opportunity to have a dialogue with you about cowardice, anywhere, anytime."

Romney -- who unexpectedly ended his presidential campaign at last year’s CPAC -- told the Tribune-Review that congressional Republicans should coalesce around good ideas and get them out there first: "That shows that we are not the party of ‘no’ but the party of ‘yes, and here is how we do it.’"

Finding a way to break through with that message is the challenge, Romney said.

Huckabee, now a political TV-show host on Fox News Channel, spoke candidly to CPAC’s conservative crowd.

"Of course we should talk about what we did right,” he declared, “but we must be more candid about what we did a lousy job with."

"Thanks to the stimulus package, Republicans have this great moment to distinguish ourselves from the Democratic Party," he added.

Limbaugh closed CPAC last evening by declaring that too many misconceptions exist about who conservatives really are, and he wants to change that. "When we (conservatives) look at a group of people, we see Americans — we don't see groups of people, we don't see victims, we see potentials." he said.

"Conservatism is what it is and will be forever. It is not something you can bend and shape," he said.

CPAC honored Limbaugh, considered by many to be central to the Republican Party’s future,

This month, Obama warned GOP congressional leaders to steer clear of Limbaugh's message. Yet, just as when Republicans were out of power during the Clinton years, Limbaugh's popularity has soared again; his ratings are at an all-time of high of 14 million listeners.

Limbaugh said that conservatives believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

"If you wonder why I have to point that out, it is because we believe all three are under assault," he said.

First of all I want to applaud all of you for making this dazed, drug addict who has to be one of the largest pollers in the nation (to find out what he believes), titular head of the Conservative movement and the Republican Party.

LMAO heck limbawl's conservatives are all about dividing the American people into gays, "real" christians and Christians, "real" patriots and Patriots, disgusting. I don't care if you kill conservatism especially since its reaganism/hooverism economic policies are so damaging to the nation but please get out of the Republican Party. We do not want the single party system you are creating so quickly

Conservatives will rise again shortly
We predicted the fall of Liberalism, which means the rise of conservatism. The only question is what kind of damage will come from the Liberal's Trojan Horse in the meantime? See are many predictions at,

Demonizing Limbaugh
Since liberals become fascists once in power, they seek to consolidate the power of the government. This means controlling what the people hear. Therefore, voices that criticize the government must be silenced. Obamanation has Rush in its sightsand the full court press to demonize Rush by Obama and his administration is truly a creepy thing to watch. I watched a clip of Keith Olberman and Janeane Garofolo on http://www.moonbat.com where their sole topic was Rush. Janeane concluded that Rush is a narcissist who suffers from self-loathing. That all conservatives have some sort of mental disease. ALL CONSERVATIVES. And Olberman just sat there agreeing. The picture on the screen was of Rush lighting a big fat cigar. Reminded me of the guy on the monopoly game: the capitalist fat cat. Janeane also stated, without reservation, that Rush was having a women's summit in order to get a date, and she criticized women who have dated him as doing so only because he's wealthy. Janeane, who is some sort of liberal expert on psychological underpinnings of conservatives based on no education or experience whatsoever, just dogma, said that Rush had no female listeners and his reaching out to them would fail. I listen to Rush and he has plenty of female listeners call in, and they tell him it is a honor to speak to him. So much for Garofolo's credibility. But then, it isn't about credibility or facts. There was no opposing view on that clip, no one to speak for Rush. This is the kind of demonization that Goebbels was so good at, and to see it in this country is truly scary. To have the president of the US tell Republicans in Congress that "You can't listen to Rush Limbaugh and get anything done around here" is a threat, and picking out a single citizen to demonize is scary. And to think that liberals spent 8 years calling Bush Hitler. Look in the mirror liberals, who do you see?

Hal Drunkahue
Do you read the stuff you post for consistency?

"We do not want the single party system you are creating so quickly."

Which party is in the majority? Which party wrote the biggest spending bill in the history of the country without any Republican input? Which party rammed it through Congress without any subcommittee hearings or debate? This is dictatorial one party rule. Do you think we are all stupid here? And the worst of it is, you approve of this behavior. The Founding Fathers are turning in their graves. Take a break and try not to post again until you know what you are talking about.

conservatism
Without fail, one can always tell when conservatives are effective. The liberals will always resort to name calling and will spew hatred. Check out all the liberal comments about Limbaugh, Coulter, Gingrich, et al.

What ideas does this group have?
I am in the SF-bayarea and I'm trying to keep an open mind. I (honestly) cannot find what ideas the conservatives/republicans have that are different than those that led the US to get into this myriad of difficult situations. Maybe the claim is correct, MSM is blocking the effective dissemination of information from the 'right'. I'd like to know - if we can have a respectful dialogue about it, I'm willing...

Hal Donahue...........
Where would be without the codification of fraud perpetuated on the American populace in 1955? It's been an even playing field since 1998.......get used to it.

"..."You can't listen to Rush..." LOL the correct non-lying version is "..."You can't JUST listen to Rush..." A huge difference. He was laughing at both limbawl and conservative congressmen. Of course Rush being the brillant entertainer he is dropped a word LOL

Few folks called the failed bush Hitler because even Hitler displayed some level of competency in executing his evil. The failed bush was just incompetent period. Yet, here on this site you have the loon, McCullough, calling President Obama hitler in his headline today. Typical, say one thing do another

Rush was on fire at CPAC
I'm reminded once again how Rush kept my spirits up during the dark days of Clinton. After a morning of depressing news, I would turn on the radio at 12 EST and be refreshed and renewed, and by 3 PM, there would be a smile on my face. Despair displaced by optimism and resolve.

Annie Coulter was smokin' too.

What makes these two conservative icons so effective is their wonderful ability to illustrate absurdity by being absurd, and absurd is one of the nicer things you can say about Obama and his plans for "change."

Missed Romney but caught parts of Newt and many other forums on education, energy etc. There are so many intelligent people in the weepublican party, how in the heck did they pick John McLame to run up against the dhimmicrat machine? Maybe because he suited Rush's description of a bi-partisan to a T - walks over to the other side of the aisle, bends over and grabs ankles.

Great post Ayn! Pathetic drivel, Hal, as usual. I never bother with your's or other troll's dumpings, and yet, was curiously drawn this AM. Won't happen again. You are truly worthy of indifference.

Here's a great video, a short History refresher course:
http://www.wimp.com/thegovernment/

Rush is lying through his teeth
McCain is not the past. RINOs are not the past. Real, smaller government conservatism is not the future.

Reason why? Because Rush's bosses, the Republican Party leadership decided so.

RINOs McCain and Specter are running unopposed for re-election in 2010, because the Republican leadership wants them in power. McCain is not gone -- he is helping Obama by co-sponsoring the "cap & trade" redistributionist pollution tax.

It was not one party that passed the stimulus, it was two. There was a strong conservative challenge to Republican Arlen Specter last time he ran. The reason he was able to be re-elected and go on to vote for Obama's stimulus package was because the Republican establishment, including President Bush supported Specter, not the conservative.

The same thing is happening now. On Friday the chairman of the Republican Senate Committee said that he wants liberal Republicans as candidates, not conservatives for 2010.

The reality is that the Republican Party leadership gave up on small government. They just use Rush to lie to the rank and file so they keep sending the money and votes in to elect more RINOs.

Who will be the Republican nominee in 2012: Specter?

Almost everything Obama does could be filibustered if the Republicans stuck together. But Republicans don't want to. They vote to pass Obama's stuff, then vote to re-elect those who supported Obama.

"We do not want the single party system you are creating so quickly."

Which party is in the majority? Which party wrote the biggest spending bill in the history of the country without any Republican input? Which party rammed it through Congress without any subcommittee hearings or debate? This is dictatorial one party rule."

I can see your comment. Guess what you lost and badly. If you want a bigger voice win more elections. But you won't you are going to wind up a small regional party with mostly old bitter white men. Your extreme conservatism is dead. If you cannot find new ideas so is the Republican Party. You think you have little voice now? Wait until you lose even more seats in 2010. Your failed philosophy is helping create the single party system you see coming

"...And the worst of it is, you approve of this behavior. The Founding Fathers are turning in their graves..."

Oh no we are returning to the values of the founders read some real history. Start with the opening of the western frontier (Ohio River Valley). Cooperation, investment in infrastructure and individuals and government oversight and involvement were always there. Your extreme conservatism is based not on history but myth that never existed

How did McCain get the nomination?
John McCain got the Republican nomination because it was rigged. The Republican Party establishment wanted a RINO, either Giuliani or McCain, so they set up most of the delegates as winner-take-all in Democratic states like New York. That gave McCain an early victory, even though by normal, proportional rules Romney would have been leading on the day he dropped out.

The RINO Republican media also constantly talked about Democratic states McCain won like NH, while ignoring red states Romney won at the same time like Wyoming. The fix was in.

Rush Limbaugh=end of GOP
conservatives once again have elected Limbaugh as their interim spokes person until another gingrich comes along. In the Early 90's before Gingrich Limbaugh assumed this role and I beleive was eventually made an honorary part of congress. Gingrich's era was able to push Clinton to moderation.

History in its way often repeats itself. Certainly as Rush becomes the face of conservatism the back lash is once again predicatble and easily quatifiable.

Certainly limbaugh drove moderates and reagan democrats-out of the party insuring Clinton a second term. As the conservative movement has decided not to moderate-moderates, indpendents, and conservative dems will flee the party in droves almost insuring an second term for Obama.

Limbaugh might be a favorite of the right but embracing him is not a move that will grow the conservative movement-he will in fact cost the GOP voters and put upcoming seats in danger.

Please, if somebody has any empirical evidence that would suggest independents, blue dog democrats, or even former Reagan deomcrats would want to return to a polarized far right party please present it. As it has happened before Rush is the de facto leader again.

I mean has the GOP gone so far right they they have forgotten how to reach out? Methinks that time has come.

is in fine screaming, flaming liberal form this morning. Must have passed out early last night at the Legion or VFW.

If any group is hoping for and working toward a one party system it is the Democrat/Socialist Party. Unfortunately, there are the likes of Specter, Snowe, and Collins who are willing to aid and abet the enemy (and yes, the Socialists are the enemy of the American people and the American way of life).

Those of us who want to resurrect the Conservative movement must get ourselves off our butts and motivate true Conservatives to run against the far too many RINOs throughout the country. We should also encourage Blue Dog Democrats to recognize the dangers the Democrat/Socialist Party represent to the Republic and the Constitution. There are likely a few who in their heart of hearts are truly Republicans but, like Specter, Snowe, and Collins, keep their party identification as a matter of personal convenience, not personal convictions.

The Battle Is On!
For my money Rush is probably the best conservative speaker in the country and he doesn't need teleprompters! The phony, Harvard-educated Obama is an ideologue with speech writers galore and he can't hold a candle to Rush's eloquence and espousal of his sincere belief in his philosophy based on conservative principles.

He rocked the CPAC hall and at home watching the Great One's first appearance before a national audience on national TV (Fox channel) I stood up and clapped with the thousands in Washington, D.C. His first speech to the nation was a rousing, rollicking success and Hal in Pa. was reduced to groaning, swearing, and kicking his dog.

Stand by, Liberals, the counter-revolution is coming and it's going to bury you!

That is easy the vast majority of the US is not extreme conservative nor do they want religion mixed in with their politics

Michael
“I (honestly) cannot find what ideas the conservatives/republicans have that are different than those that led the US to get into this myriad of difficult situations.”

In the spirit of “Reader’s Digest”, I’ll address a single issue here:

One of the ideas that conservatives hold to is free market capitalism, and the single issue at hand is the mortgage debacle. Trace this disaster to it’s’ roots and you’ll find Jimmy Carter’s signature on a bill called “The Community Reinvestment Act” (CRA). This “Act” effectively forced banks to behave contrary to their best interest, thus removing a measure of freedom in the banking market, and make loans to people lacking the means to repay.

During his SOTU address, the good Mr. Obama slandered the banking industry for making these loans. He must have conveniently forgotten his having participated as legal counsel for the plaintiff against Citibank and forcing the bank to go against its best interest and make these bad loans. When right-thinking republicans foretold of the coming disaster that would result from the CRA, they were “poo-poo’d” by left leaning democrats and events were left to unfold on their own. We now have a mortgage crisis.

Had the democrats left the free market to its own designs, we would not be facing this issue today.

what ideas?
Science and technology have passed the conservative republicans right on by. huge social changes have occurred that the Republicans were slow to debate or offer solutions. Solutions for the lower classes are few and perceptions of this class are off the charts. The republicans have lost the majority and preaching neo fascism will not get it back. A revolution is needed to break up the power base so that small enterprises really can compete.
A example is the loss of the Hispanic vote. The Hispanics are basically a Republican group in their beliefs. the Republicans abused them and the demos were right there to pick them up. This same thing goes on with other minority groups does anybody on the Republican horizon really have a clue how create a new base

Name call away and why do you mention my military service I seldom do?

"..If any group is hoping for and working toward a one party system it is the Democrat/Socialist Party..."

See here you go with this silly socialist BS. It is the Democratic Party's mission to win as many elections as it can as big as it can.

"...Unfortunately, there are the likes of Specter, Snowe, and Collins who are willing to aid and abet the enemy (and yes, the Socialists are the enemy of the American people and the American way of life)."

Silly name calling yet again no matter how many times you say socialist it does not make it true, unless you also want to call the founders socialists. You want to take out Arlen in a primary? Go for it I know several good folks who would make a good Democratic Senator from PA. Remember failed senator Santorum?

"Those of us who want to resurrect the Conservative movement must get ourselves off our butts and motivate true Conservatives to run against the far too many RINOs throughout the country."

Conservatism failed look around you. Most of the country knows it

Limbaugh and conservatism?
I'm a Republican who saw nothing but "beautiful goose eggs" in ideas and constructive dialogue at the conservative gathering. All that the conservatives were able to muster was more ideological insults. Still no ideas or solutions from the far right. Limbaugh may or may not be off his narcotics addiction, is he now on steroids too? Fortunately for America, the audience that is only able to grasp ideological soundbites is not a voting majority.

So much stupidity
For all of those who believe conservative principles brought us this mess get a grip. It was Republicans who abandoned Conervative Principles and spent and spent and spent who did this. Look at the mid-term and 2008 election results in districts where Republicans were replaced with Democrats and you might understand. The winners in the majority of those districts were won by candidates whose candidates campaigned on Conservative Principles who just happened to be Democrats.

It is the simpleton who looks at this and thinks that because Democrats now have the majority they think that conservatism is dead. The American people were sold a pig in a poke. They wanted Change. They wanted Change from the big spending inside the beltway mentality that has brought us to this mess. Just because a few very vocal Liberal voices have drowned out the rest does not mean that Conservative Principles are the tired old failed policies of the past. In fact the opposite is true.

We Americans who think and use a little common sense are very concerned. I tend to Judge a person by thier deeds and not what they say. So far President Obamas' deeds do not impress. He complains about the huge deficits he inherited but in less than a month he managed to create a larger deficit than 8 years of Bush. He complains about the excesses of the CEO's of Bank Executives but instead of doing something about the root causes of this Banking Debacle he actually keeps pouring all our dollars down the huge sinkhole and to make matters worse he actually egages in all the behaviors that he critizes others for. The big difference is that he uses public money for this while the Bank Executives at least can argue that only a portion of public money was used.

I see no Change, I see no Hope, all I see is the same old tired spend, spend, spend policies that help create this mess.

Democratic motto:

Talk about OLD ideas, the Democratic motto has not changed since Karl Marx!

"We got ours, as scumbag lawyers, and now we are going to take yours and give it to the scum and dregs who vote for us!"

conservatives
All too many so called republicans and conservatives are too young to know the late 70's when during Carter the term had coined the word "Stagflation" with 22% interest and 9% unemployment and inflation.
Businesses failed and we got out of the turmoil without spending money that was not yet earned or was ours but those of successive generations.
My only complaint is the conservatives are not calling for term limits to add some courage and integrity to our system by getting rid of the old bulls and cycling more people through government.

Democratic Help?

Never, ever listen to suggestions from Democrats. They are forever the same, "Be like us and worship at the alter of liberalism."

Limbaugh hates America
druggie boy Fatso Rush is nothing but a thrice-divorced childless windbag who hates America. This is who leads the party of "family-values".

I mention the fact that you are a Telephone Colonel because it demonstrates that you are a prime example of the Peter Principle. Look it up, as you are fond of saying yourself, if you don't know what the Peter Principle is.

Why do you call the expression of opinions name calling? The Democrat Party, in my opinion, is rapidly morphing into the Socialist Party. Espousing, adopting, and voting for Socialist policies and programs makes one a Socialist. That's my opinion and the Constitution guarantees my right to express that opinion.

The Democrat Party is employing the tactics of Socialists to win elections. Making the masses dependent upon the government for their very survival is a primary Socialist goal and the Democrat Party is seeking that end with great vigor. And far too successfully, regrettably.

And just how is my expressing my opinion regarding RINOs such as Snowe, Collins, and Specter, and labeling them as such, name calling? Using the term Rebulicans In Name Only describes these people quite precisely. Truthfully now, would you be at all surprised if any of these RINOs would kiss Harry Reids ring tomorrow and join the Senate Democrat Caucus ala Jumping Jim Jeffords, former RINO, VT?

As far as replacing Specter with a Democrat goes, you might as well, since Specter votes like one anyway. I'd rather the people of Pennsylvania have an opportunity to actually have a real choice in the next Senatorial election. How about Lynn Swan to oppose Specter?

What what do DO, not what we SAY
"I tend to Judge a person by thier deeds and not what they say."

Me too. That's why I know the Republican Party is a socialist and big government party, despite what they (Rush) SAYS.

They haven't seriously tried to cut the size of the government since Gingrich and the government shutdown in 1995.

Unlike Reagan in the early 1980's, Bush and Republicans made no attempt to use conservative principles to fix the economy during the past 5 years.

As someone mentioned above, there is no Republican proposal for government reforms like term limits, balanced budget amendments, etc. There is no New Contract With America.

Today's Republican Party is the most empty, awful disagrace of a political party I have ever seen. It has nothing to do with Ronald Reagan's party which I joined in 1980. Really it is more the absence of a political party than anything else.

The Republican Party right now seems to consist of nothing more than listening to Rush Limbaugh talk on TV and hoping there is a back lash against Barack Obama. Even if Republicans were magically swept back into power tomorrow, they have no idea what they would do, just like they had no plan under Bush. A bunch of deer caught in the headlights, sleepy deer.
