Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

If you placed a bet during the presidential campaign season on whether Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were serious about hitting the ground running when they took over Washington, you probably have extra change in your pocket.

Whether it is George Bush with Iraq or Obama with the economy, politicians always have a bias for action. Obama's action today is economic recovery -- on speed.

The rush by the White House and Congress to "fix" things has been mind-numbing. But can't anyone pause long enough to make sure that what's being signed into law really is the right thing?

In 1920, before the Great Depression hit, our country was moving from an agricultural economy into an industrial economy. Today, we are an information/service economy, which means the things we create are not necessarily concrete, as crops and machines were.

"I think that fact alone has ramifications for a government stimulus," says Lara Brown, a political scientist at Villanova University.

Brown's concern is how exactly the stimulus money will "filter" into our less-than-concrete system.

"If we borrow money from China to give money back to individuals to spend (in the form of tax cuts or tax credits), will their spending eventually go back to China because they use it to make purchases at stores such as Wal-Mart?" she asks.

Which begs a follow-up question: How would that stimulate job growth here?

The current stimulus plan lacks ambition, innovation and creativity, Brown says. Government shouldn't create jobs; it should create markets that spur private companies to create jobs. "The government's job is to speed up the process known as 'creative destruction,' " she says.

Much of the money in the stimulus plan goes to states to help balance their budgets or to programs created long ago -- some successful (such as Pell grants) and some controversial (sexually transmitted disease prevention) -- but not many that are really "new" or experimental.

"Too much for too little" is Brown's assessment of the stimulus package.

You need a GPS system to figure the path this huge outlay of funds will take to excite economic activity for the next expansionary period.

One overlooked concern is the considerable lack of confidence our elected officials have in the energy and creativity of Americans to invent or innovate.

Instead, what they served up are programs that are just about helping people to hunker down and ride out the storm, such as food stamps and increased Medicaid payments to states -- necessary, perhaps, but too large a proportion of the stimulus bill.

"In short, the administration and the Congress didn't think 'blue sky' enough," Brown says.

Americans just now are getting a peek at all the spending and the lack of "change" they will see this year, says Congressman Mike Pence, R-Ind., who chairs the Republican Conference.

Pence says that after the "spending bill" (he refuses to call it a stimulus bill), more government growth will be on the table with the coming 2009 omnibus spending bill, the cap-and-trade bill and then the federal budget.

"There are thousands upon thousands of earmarks in the omnibus spending bill alone," he says.

In his press conference last week, President Obama mentioned not once but twice that he had a hard time taking seriously GOP criticism of the stimulus bill and federal spending, since Republicans grew the deficit to twice its size when they had power.

Still, it would have been swell to have someone put in this bill new investments into the biotech, nanotech, health care and alternative-energy sectors, to drive an "innovation era" -- and a message of "Oh yeah, we want you to be part of it."

Instead, we got a message of "Pass this bill and ignore its girth, or the sky will fall."

Democrats face some very tough choices: Will they confront their own special interests (such as autoworker unions), or will they just spend more money? Remember, fundamentally, Democrats believe public problems require public solutions.

Obama thinks that, for the most part, Republican economic policies have been catastrophically wrong -- and he's not been shy about saying so. He's using his brand and popularity for political and policy leverage.

So far, that leverage has carried the day.

Obama
believes the Republicans spent too much when they were in charge. He also thinks they cut taxes too much. So, what does he do? He spends even more and cuts taxes even more than Bush did. Take that Bush and Republicans. It is passed time to throw all of the clowns out.

Selena, Yes and ...
capital, business, and employment are mobile in the information economy. A Democrat Congress and Administration can chase all of out of the country, which could cause economy hardship for generations.

In the global economy businesses will seek countries that have an educated workforce and a business friendly environment. There are countries in the world that will provide these. As it now appears the US will provide neither under the Democrats there is cause for concern about the prospects of future generations.

The counter example to high tax, low growth is Ireland, which lowered taxes and created a business friendly environment. In 2006 its corporate tax rate was 12.5%, which is much lower than the rest of Europe, and it experience a 6.1% real GDP growth. Here's what's strange
Here's what's strange
Congressional Republicans unanimously denounced the stimulus bill for any number of details that they selected out and then spun, they made long speeches about why it can't work and why it shouldn't pass.

Then, just before the final vote, they said they hadn't been given enough time to read it and railed against the injustice of passing a bill they weren't even familiar with.

Hello? Are we standing on the corners of cognitive and dissonance, by any chance?

Congress just had the worlds worst PR
We are recording the truth. A new venture at http//:www.letterstopotus.com

Salena asks,
will the Democats face their own special interests, or will they just spend more money?

Hmmm, [1/oooooooooooooth of a second elapses].
The Dems. WILL SPEND MONEY NO MATTER WHAT!

The Repulicans are just the lesser of two evils, much less. Though I do believe that Repulicans are less afraid to use the military for its intended purpose. The Democrats are such cowards that I could never trust them enough to vote for one.

stimulus
The opposition is Red,
and the leadership is Blue.
The stimulus has passed,
And man, we are so screwed.

Two "Uns" for one (vote)...
"Unsubstantiated As Well As Unstimulating"...
I'm willing to bet & believe it will only be a matter of (little) time before "the chorus" starts singing that old familiar hymn; "It's Bush's Fault"...
Alas,
"I voted against it before I voted for it"...
"We were lied to"...
Right up there with:
"The Dog ate my homework therefore, I didn't have time to read it"...

Didn't we learn anything from TARP?
If we learn nothing else from TARP, it should e that it was too big and passed too fast. There is no rational reason why the "stimulus" could not have gone through in smaller pieces with short term stimulus taking priority. Then there would be more time to debate and examine the possible consequences each step along the way. Of course we know that that cannot happen. When the economy starts showing signs of recovery, the urgency will quickly pass just as the urgency passed for more domestic oil when gas prices fell.

Obama's solution to Bush's overspending and doubling the national debt is to do the same thing. For those who think Bush was all wrong in his policies, please remember that after 9/11, the American people demanded that we make our nation more secure and that included the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security and all the defence spending connected to it. It also included Afghanistan. Although many of us disagree in hindsight that Iraq was a legitimate mission, it did suck up a lot of money and once we were there we had to finish what we started. What would be the thinking towards us in the Middle East today if we removed Saddam and left the country in complete disarray once we learned that there was no significant WMD problem? Other than speculation and accusation, has anyone come forward who was part of that process to say that Bush and company knew before going in that there were no WMDs? I don't think so.

It's a fight against ignorance
During the past 2 weeks every top of the hour network radio news cast about this bill has been the reading of a Whitehouse press release. Most people believe this to be a "hard fought" even handed balance between tax cuts and spending, while those of us that actually researched the legislation know it to be an abomination of Government expansion.

The oft decried "Bush Spending" was really a bi-partisan Congressional spending spree made up of veto proof spending legislation negotiated in both houses of Congress. Sure, Bush could have given symbolic veto's and further weakened his damaged Presidency, but chose to save his remaining political capital to face down opponents of the Iraq war.

The Dems role in Congressional spending during the Bush administration needs to be raised as an answer of Obama's claim that "Bush" caused all this by mis-managing the economy.

He's right!
"Obama thinks that, for the most part, Republican economic policies have been catastrophically wrong"

The problem is that they WERE democrat policies disguised as "compassionate conservatism". The train started out ok, with some temporary tax cuts, but failed to do anything to stem the illegal tide, get the burden off small business where America actually works, and picked up steam when democrats took over congress.

That run away spending by republicans never got vetoed and had lots of democrat support, just check the vote totals.

Obama is continuing the policies of Bush and calling it "new" as if we hadn't seen it before. We have finally been overtaken by the CRA, compliments of Mr. Peanut, and decades of democrat policy. This crash was inevitable.

We can not allow ourselves to governed by liberals of moderate republicans, but I repeat myself. The republicans left standing seem to have finally tumbled to the idea that unless they return to conservative principles they will continue to lose elections, and they will.

This is not a stimulus bill it is a redistribution of what is left after losing 14 trillion dollars in net worth last year.

This is like putting a band-aid on cancer and saying, at least we did something. Doing something is not enough, it must be the right something.

What's the connection?

The clowns in Congress truly believe they will be able to borrow the trillions from China. Well, even if they would want to, they won't be able to. They aren't throwing good money on top of the already huge US debt they are holding now.
Get ready for galloping inflation, the Dollar will soon be worth about as much as Monopoly "money"...

why do we accept that the point of this bill is to stimulate the economy? Even the CBO says this bill will actually delay and reduce recovery. Might it be reasonable to assume malicious intent rather than incredible stupidity? Suppose the objective is a docile, controllable population. What better way than to eliminate any independent means? Then everyone will be completely dependent on the largesse of the elected officials. Slaves to them in fact.

How About: NO Spending Bill!
Now, THAT would stimulate me! A Congress respecting the Constitution.

Interesting analysis by Ms. Zito, but she assumes that government has some role, though small, in promoting a modern economy.

Retired Geek Stimulus Package

Create a randomly sorted database of all citizens on welfare. Although 3,880,321 were on welfare as of 12-31-07, the average size of a welfare family is 4.2, resulting in 16,297,348 actually living off of the welfare recipients check.

This is the equivalent of the actual population (not metro population) of New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas.

Deport all illegal aliens and create a database of where they worked (Approximately $160 billion -$10k per deportation).

Assign each person on welfare to a job that was left by an illegal alien.

Refusal to report to the job automatically and permanently drops the citizen from welfare for life.

The government would pay the business for the salary of the newly hired former welfare recipient, whether replacing a deported illegal alien or a new job creation, for six months (Approximately $166.4 billion - $10 hr).

Give each former welfare recipient $30,000, for expenses to relocate to the new job and incidental expenses (Approximately $480 billion).

An approximate $804 billion, deports all illegal aliens - this takes the drain off all of society - puts all welfare recipients to work.

The entire $804 billion is placed into the economy within six months and business's have money to improve, expand or hire other employees.

This would save or create 15 to 16 million jobs.

Everyone wins except the politicians.

No one (except the Democratic leadership)knows what remains in the final bill; neither what was added nor what was removed. Are you being deliberately obtuse? Oh yes, of course.

assuming for sake of argument that govt spending could help energize parts of the economy. Why wasn't the approach of passing the things that would have the most immediate impact done first while the debate about long term projects continued under discussion.

During the campaign the messiah promised he would be going over the existing budget line by line to eliminate any program that was either wasteful, no longer needed or duplicated services.

Funny how he is no longer talking about this approach. But in a federal budget of $4.5 trillion it is impossible to believe there are not vast billions that could rechanneled to other programs or even areas of gov't eliminated.

But of course that would involve gov't union jobs and the unions already own the dim party so that approach will be quickly forgotten as just another campaign lie of the new messiah that he doesn't feel the need to follow up on

So much for hope and change. The messiah continues as a status quo dim. He is loyal to his core to the unions, the lawyers, the lobbyists and all the special interest groups the dims cater to.

No hope, no change but the messiah maintains the love of his acolytes and the admiration of the msm for whom he can never fail. That is until he actually does fail to deliver on promises to the left, his core constituency and the group he is most loyal to

.....So far the only stimulation I've seen has been coming from the loins of Oberman, Matthews and Kathleen Parker .....COLOSSUS

You cannot spend your way out of debt.
Spending your way out of debt is the message that consumers have been using for decades as the mainstream media dream machine pushed this insanity through TV for years. Consequently, the government has promoted the same insanity. Beginning with FDR and the use of Keynesian Economics, translated, Deficit Spending, was the beginning of this insanity in government that was then pushed on the American people, mostly by the use of TV and advertising companies specializing in propaganda and brainwashing.

Then, the public education system was hijacked, and the job was complete.

Americans have become de-sensitized to reality, and have lived in a Media Produced Dream world for decades, and none so much as today, with the advent and proliferation of computers. Computers, just like TV's could be used as a very helpful tool, and in some cases, they have been used in this way, but much more harm has been done through these mediums than good.

Buy this, buy that, and if you have already bought this from us, we now have a new and improved version of that junk you bought last time. Buy this, and you will be more sexy, prettier, smarter, stronger, smell better, etc. and if you cannot afford to buy it, we have an easy payment plan. Thus, people have gone into debt at levels they cannot pay, in the quest to achieve the American Dream on credit. The government did the same thing and also promoted this insane idea. Today, personal debt, corporate debt, and the national debt all have a direct correlation, and the band plays on, and Obama and these socialist idiots are saying they can Spend Our Way out of Debt, and the band plays on.

basballdoc
be very careful in what you post. Talking of being stimulated by messiah might lead to getting dates from bawney fwank and an invite to join nambla.

of course
anyone surprised that the democrats would enact an agenda-laden spending/stimulus plan that dwarfs all previous gov't spending hasn't been paying attention. they have no real opposition, they have a voter approved mandate from a "majority" of fellow americans (51%), the perfect scenario/excuse (economic "catastrophe"), unbridled belief that gov't can fix everything and the backing of irresponsible media. want to send a message back to them? return your "rebate" check with a note to ms.pelosi, mr.reid and pres.O "NO THANKS, I DON'T NEED YOUR "HELP" signed a concerned and patriotic citizen" maybe they'll get the message.

Smelly Stuff.
Giving politicians stimulus money to fix the economy is no better than letting the Fox fix the chicken coop. Politicians are only interested in getting reelected. The money they receive from Washington will be distributed to political friends and not make jobs for unemployed strangers. But if you throw enough of the smelly stuff against the wall some of it will stick. Lets hope it trickles down.

Wise Up People
As everybody knows the Republicans and the Democrats have had control of our nations political arena for over 100 years,and they have had ample time to create and establish a good running economy as well as a great country. What have both parties ended up doing with this power? They both have had their hands in ruining this nation both financially and in our security. I believe the best thing we could do for our nation is in 2012 vote in only a politician that will folllow and abide by our Constitution. This sacred document was prepared and written by true patriots and is the reason we have a free nation today. We need to return to their ideals and beliefs so our country can become great again. We need the Constitution party in control of our nation, no other party will give the people freedom and greater control over their own lives.

Bailout Bash In Fantasy Land

Dear Leader:

I know that you swore to uphold the Constitution, protect American po'folk and claim to be a "citizen of the World", but how do you feel that the corrupted United Nations is now asking for a bailout from the United States, which already pays more than any other country?

Whose side are you on? The U.S. or the U.N.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And, those going to the Bailout Ball, please think about whether the American tax dollar should protect your job or bailout Asian banks and the U.N.'ers that rape, murder or sit idly by.
The French Generals said NUTS to the Germans in WWII! Screw the "Nuts" because it is more like drop dead.
(h20skier and I are going to leave the US and take our O&G with us)
Ditto Mike in Illinois
Constitutional Party sounds like the route to go, but how will you get the word out. The Main Stream Media would not even sell advertising to anything or anybody that would upset the apple cart. Look at how the MSM got on the Socialist Obama and the DNC band wagon, and used so called news programs to Promote Obama, while damning Bush, Palin, McCain and Republicans generally.
Obama'a latest quote:
"I did not have sex with that woman,Nancy Pelosi"
In fact, Nancy just screwed the whole country.
Conservatives, "Consider Nationalizing"
====
"Fiscal conservatives" have said that the U.S. Government should at least consider nationalizing the country's banking system as a means of moving beyond the current lending crisis.
"This idea of nationalizing banks is not comfortable," said Sen. Lindsey Graham. "But I think we've got so many toxic assets spread throughout the banking and financial community, throughout the world, that we're going to have to do something that no one ever envisioned a year ago, no one likes. To me, banking and housing are the root cause of this problem. I'm very much afraid any program to salvage the bank is going to require the government... I would not take off the idea of nationalizing the banks."
Rep. Peter King also said "nationalization" should remain on the table.
"President Obama mentioned not once but twice that he had a hard time taking seriously GOP criticism of the stimulus bill and federal spending, since Republicans grew the deficit to twice its size when they had power."
How does that statement correlate with even more spending? BIG lack of credibility here! These statements are made by a simpleton for simpletons and have no bearing on the problem at hand except to deflect criticism. Throw the bum out he's already shown his incompetence and complete lack of candor.
Dusty
No one had read the entire bill from the very beginning. The Republicans were not interested in passing or crafting a serious stimulus bill, and they weren't interested in doing anything that would support Obama.
I would bet you my house that all of the posters on TH who are railing bumper sticker slogans and meaningless tripe don't know what it says, either, and never did.
O.
God, you are stupid.
Do you read what various, non partisan economists are saying, or are you just opening up TH every morning to see what you should be thinking?
People who say this stuff really crack me up. So you think if you take the same people, slap a new label on them, voila things will suddenly be different? Hilarious! You complain about your rights or lack there of, but what of the rights of the citizens who disagree with you? Governing will always be done on compromise, so you need to learn where you compromise and where you don't.
Show me people who say "WE need a new Party!" and I will show you an arm chair quarterback couch potato. Someone who shouts plays at the tv, but who has never actually participated.
Stimulas Plan?
I guess that's what it's called and yes, I'm stimulated. But not in a way I can print here.
What's alarming is that none of our Demoncratic "leaders" in Foggy Bottom have actually read the entire plan.
They just voted for it and went on holiday to leave us all wondering just exactly is in the plan and how much it's going to cost us.
I don't think it will work and all I've seen and read so far looks like so much "business as usual" from the Demoncrats. Thievery ss always.
Just a reminder, most of the problems we are looking at right now are rooted in high energy prices and out of control spending and those are largely the result of the death of 3,000 American civilians, brutally murdered, by Osama bin Laden.
Bin Laden had killed another hundred or so, I believe by the time an American president, bill clinton, decided not to arrest him when the Sudanese offered him up. Seems the lawyer bill, didn't think he had enough evidence to try him in a court of law. He was too busy selling missile secrets to the Chinese and pardons to hundred terrorists and tax evaders of others to be bothered. 3,000.
I take it you have read this bull and know exactly whats in the Dimocrat spending bull. Its just the way Pelousy wants it and the reason for all the hurry so that no one will have time to read it. We are told that if it isnt passed immediately life as we know it will end but the truth is it has to be passed quickly or the economy may start to recover on its own and the Dimocrats will lose a chance to rob us blind as they always do when they are in power.
Democrat's Goodie Bag
The Spending Bill is nothing more than a goodie-bag for Democrats to buy votes and change the landscape even more to favor 'Democrats forever'.
Red States will pay for not supporting Dear Leader. They will get the crumbs from Democrat's tables.
The Good News.......
obama looting the treasury and spreading the spoils amongst his political base will work to stimulate the economy!
The Bad News: Just in the eyes of the media and his supporters.
You could paint a leopard to cover up the spots, but when the paint wore off (or even if it didn't wear off), the creature under the paint would still be a leopard.
There was "Hope" probably as in vain as the hyped "Hope" in the campaign that Obama would turn centrist when nothing in his mentors or his behavior would have suggested such a thing.
I did have hope also, but not a very strong or realistic one.
Too much--too fast...
The spending bill needs to be sent for signature quickly--because the economy is in danger of starting to recover on it's own.
Did anybody realize that crude oil is down to $32 a barrel? It went down $2 on Friday alone.
WE are still willingly spending more and more money per gallon at the pump & at the private businesses that will in turn employ some of our kids. What goes around comes around--Pelosi will get hers; as will the rest of the trio. When all the taxpayers revolt and refuse to work--how are they going to spread the wealth?
I believe I'll just quietly continue to selectively spend on what I personally want to buy (gold is good) and decide for myself to only spend at my own selected places.
If you don't buy from Wal-Mart, China won't get the money...
Hunker down? Yes--but at my own behest, not theirs.
LoneRules is a Class-A Hypocrite!
Funny how this moron [conveniently] forgot to mention that the true-blue state of New Mexico is ranked #1 in federal handouts.
An excerpt from the HEADLINE: New Mexico gets $2 for every dollar in taxes, New Jersey only 61 cents.
The utter hypocrisy from the left knows no bounds.
Also funny, Lefties will never mention the FACT that red states consistently give much more to charitible causes than blue states. Lefties are nothing but hot air when it comes to reaching into their own pockets and contributing to anything worthwhile. As always, they want someone else to give their hard-earned money instead via BIG government coercion.
Does anyone in their right mind take these Lefty loons seriously?
He was groomed and trained by the Soros Machine and others to do just what he is doing. Selling. He had no part in this 'Stimulus Bill'. It was cobbled together by the left-wingnuts like Soros who crave socialism.
The news media did their part in creating this charlatan. Their aim,also is to destroy any opposition,especially demonizing the Republicans,24/7.
B.Hussein and his lapdogs,the MSM have sold this country down the river. The socialist-leaning congress was all too willing to buy this pig in a poke. Our downfall is on their watch. They are responsible for the damage.
Salesman Of The Year
The NRA recently named Obama as Salesman Of The Year because of the fear that gun ownership would be prohibited. This in spite of the Heller Decision, in which SCOTUS held that an individual has the right to own firearms.
Since then, there are waiting lines in gun shops.
So, there is one industry that has been stimulated by Obama.
Still Hoping for Change
I have never seen, in my 67 years, a grown man in such a frenzy as Obama. He is behaving like a squirrel on cocaine, the Energizer Bunny on speed.
The Lib Dem-majority Congress, joined by three feckless pretenders - Spector, Snowe and Collins -have joined the scurrying rats. Spector did so for a good personal reason. He got multi-millions into the Porkulus package for cancer research. He has cancer, apparently a cancer that has effected his reasoning ability.
Similar to Ted Kennedy who was brought in like Weekend at Bernie's - the movie - for the cloture vote and initial senate vote on the Porkulus package, Spector has his selfish motivations.
Kennedy could not be carted in again for the final Senate vote, but Brown (D-OH) was flown at our expense as taxpayers back and forth from his mother's wake to cast the last vote in the Senate late Friday night.
The rammed through emergency measure was so important, but Obama did not sign it Friday night, Saturday morning or declare all government offices open 24/7 until the crisis is resolved completely. Instead Obama is delaying signing for his Denver campaign show, again at hundreds of thousands of dollars of our money to haul him and all required for Presidential travel from DC to Denver and back.
(cont.)
Still Hoping for Change - 2
If GWB had pulled a stunt like this the Lib Dem Obamaniacs would have howled for his lynching. Oh, wait a minute, they are already anyway and Cheney's too.
The only crimes Bush/Cheney have committed are dealing with Islamic jihadists trying to take over the world for Allah. Bush/Cheney have done this better than almost all of the four Presidents and VPs before them, certainly better than Carter and Clinton.
Obama shows some promise. He did vote for renewal of FISA before his inauguration. He has not closed Gitmo nor decided yet what to do about the nice men there after ordering suspension of their trials. He has let strikes continue in Afghanistan and Pakistan killing "civilians."
So, staying calm as this frenzy swirls around us, we wait, watch and hope for good results. Even a dying person I have heard clings to hope for change, good change, improvement.
Yes,you're right. They are trying to deflect any negativity from Dear Leader. They have their work cut out for them,don't they?
Much as I hate what is happening ,it will be fun seeing the left get their come-uppance.
They say even a blind hog finds an ACORN sometimes.
Hope you took the 'missus' out for lunch or dinner.
