Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Pennsylvania voters were the center of the presidential political universe this year during both the Democratic primary and the general election.

Their concerns and culture allowed Hillary Clinton to get her groove back in the spring and, in the fall, became the battleground where John McCain made his last stand.

Now two key Pennsylvania races -- for a U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Arlen Specter, for an open seat for governor now held by Democrat Ed Rendell -- are up for grabs in 2010, although the jockeying already has begun.

Eight years ago, Pennsylvania had two Republican U.S. senators, Specter and Rick Santorum, with Republican Tom Ridge as governor. Its congressional delegation and state Legislature were also solidly GOP.

Since then, the governorship, one Senate seat and a majority of the congressional delegation have shifted to Democrats. The only thing left in GOP hands is the state Senate.

“Being out of power can be good for political parties,” says Rob Maranto, a former Villanova political scientist. “It forces you to work harder to figure out what you really need to focus on, as opposed to what is superfluous, and it forces you to find new and more capable leaders.”

In the U.S. Senate battle, Specter still feels the sting of his tough 2004 primary challenge from U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey. Specter won -- but by less than 2 percentage points. Toomey, now president of The Club for Growth, remains noncommittal about a rematch.

Chris Matthews, the anchor of MSNBC’s “Hardball” program, tops the list of potential Democrat challengers; word is that he plans to decide in the early days of the new year. Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Bucks County “Blue Dog” is considering a run; state Rep. Josh Shapiro, a rising Democrat star and Philadelphia-area reformer, also is rumored to be considering it.

“For the Dems, a lot hinges on Chris Matthews, who has name recognition but is a nonstop talker,” says Maranto. His guess is that the party’s favorite may end up being Josh Shapiro, if he can find a way to out-fund-raise Matthews: “In any event, if Specter is beaten in the Republican primary -- an outcome that is at least 50/50 -- this is likely to become a Democratic seat.”

Thanks to the state’s two-term limit, Rendell will leave an open governor’s seat.

Pennsylvanians have a long history of switching parties every eight years, which in theory gives Republicans an edge.

On the GOP side, state attorney general Tom Corbett tops the list to succeed Rendell, followed by former U.S. attorney Pat Meehan and Rep. Jim Gerlach. No sign so far of a return by former Steeler and 2006 Republican gubernatorial nominee Lynn Swann.

The top Democrats are Allegheny County executive Dan Onorato, state auditor general Jack Wagner and Kathleen McGinty, former head of the state environmental protection department.

Pennsylvania’s 2010 races will come at a key time for President Obama; they will mark his first midterm election, the first real electoral test of his political tentacles.

If Obama is successful, then he could solidify Pennsylvania’s blueness. If he is on shaky ground, then all shades of red and purple could predominate.

“I think Pennsylvania remains a competitive state that leans blue but which cannot be taken for granted,” says former University of Pittsburgh political scientist Bert Rockman.

In the run-up to the November election, everyone around the country learned that Pittsburgh and Philadelphia served as Democratic bookends to the state's conservative Republican center and northern tier. Yet if you look closely at 2008's results, the more accurate portrayal now is of Democratic Philadelphia and her collar counties in the east with virtually everything else to the west being the Republican heartland.

In 2008, Clinton and McCain both staked everything on Pennsylvania. Obama stumbled badly there in the spring but by the fall won it handily -- which might make political-thinkers believe the state is now firmly blue.

Maranto disagrees: “GOP prospects are pretty good. Pennsylvania voters are generally leery of giving all the keys to the kingdom to either party; with Rendell having the governorship for eight years and the Democrats in control in Washington, it makes it easy for a Republican to run as someone assuring the separation of powers, or else run as the outsider.

“Either way,” he says, “it should make the Republicans highly competitive in Pennsylvania -- and lots of other states.”

Chris Matthews
I continue to hear Chris Matthews' name re the Democratic Senate contender..U gotta be kiddin!!! The last good idea I heard regarding said MSNBC "Celebrity" was the one espoused by Zel Miller several years ago when he talked about publicly "dueling" in the Public Square.
Cheers!!

Pennsylvania???????
I'm sorry but the whole State sucks!!!

Easy there 'The Roman'

If you take a look at the election results, 'That one' only won about 25% of Pennsylvania's counties.

I'm going to start a movement to have New Jersey annex Philadelphia and surrounding counties. This state without the unions and entitlement crowd will then lean heavily to the right.

Unfortunately...
Pa. is like my state...all the sensible folks are in the rural areas and small towns and all the leftards infiltrate the big cities enmasse and dominate the voting process with large numbers that the rest of the state can't match.

Roman
we don't care what ya think! But I do like the way your state voted!

Roy / no worries
If Chris Matthews runs, Arlen Spector wins.
We're smart voters here! (see Santorum 2006)

Corndog
unless you're gonna register the trees in central PA to vote (ACORN?), carrying 75% of the counties means nothing.

wrightsrong52, That's funny.

My biggest fear living in PA is that upon my death I will become a registered dimwitcrat and start voting libtard.

Corndog
only if you lived in Philly! Your best chance is to get buried in Vince Fumo's district.

PA is Blue State

PA is more of an eastern state than a western one.

Look at what has happened to New England. NE has no Republicans now after the defeat of Christopher Shays, a moderate Republican and a good representative

When you have the creep, Barney Frank winning 79% of the vote in his MA district, you have committed left wingers.

I feel so alienated from that part of the country. It is as if they lived on another planet.

BenBarker
You are so right, and it is not just happening in your state. Texas is starting to be that way more and more. More and more folks moving here because of jobs. The city and intercity dwellers want to brag about "how pretty the country life is" but then turn around and put all thier crazy ideas and regs on us that live out here and try to make a living.
the proposed $175.00 per cow fart/belch tax will be enough to run us all out of business

Principle
Once over fifty percent of the voters depend on government handouts for their support, the gates of the national treasury will collapse. This is what is happening now. We have added bankers to the welfare state.

SPECTER STARTED GOP DOWNTURN IN PA

.....Pat Toomey was a popular conservative with a lot of support but in the primaries the RNC, GW and Santorum campaigned for Specter and put a RINO in the Senate ...this blew the credibility of the GOP in the State ...

.....Santorum got booted and Gw's popularity dropped like a lead goose ...

.....It is strange that union workers are so loyal to the Dems considering what they have done vis a vis jobs ...Dem controlled, heavily unionized States have become Rust Belts and disaster zones ...look at MI and the UAW ...US steel in IN & PA and the Rubber Plants in OH ...

.....It is also sad that a few big cities, that are liberal magnets for big government voters and corrupt politics can control the entire State ...maybe on a National level we need a new system based on districts instead of population ...why should the inhabitants of Philadelphia, Chicago, NYC etc control the National politics of States like TX and OK? .....COLOSSUS

Rednecks
Guess the people of PA like being called Bible and Gun Tooting Rednecks by Murtha and they like Kanjorski giving his family a good living off of their tax dollars for earmarks. When are the American people going to wake up to all the lies and stealing of todays Politicians. Just wait till Obama and Biden get into office. They want to help support the rest of the World because a lot of countries can't take care of themselves. Give our tax dollars to help with their school amd medical. They don't care about Americans today, just foreigners. Illegals get free schooling, medical and welfare off of our tax dollars and Americans are not rasing hell about it. Wake up Americans we need men and women in Washington that care about We The People and not anything else as they do today.

baseballdoc
You have asked a great question.
I think having too much power dooms the unions and their supporting politicians to failure. Unfortunately, it hurts those that do not agree with the policies as much or more than those who promote the policies.

Mathews Obama Biden & Ole Nancy
reminds me of when I was a kid and my Dad gave me a chaw of tobackie. It made me puke, and he you have to learn how to control your gag reflexes. I feel exactly the same way with I look at Mathews Obama Biden & Ole Nancy.

I learned to back then, but some reason I am unable to control it now.

Remember
Specter is a RINO.
Governor Rendell and the demoncrats in the Legislature officially made Pennsylvania THE VOTER FRAUD STATE.

Corndog #3: Good idea putting the most corrupt part of PA in the corrupt state of NJ.

BenjaminBarker #4: That's why Corndog's idea is so good.

SHUBI

.....It was FDR's Wagner Act that tipped the balance of power in favor of organized labor ...

.....Industries had to go all the way to the Supreme Court to outlaw sit-down strikes where the workers took over the property and shut it down ...when Governors were appealed to they sent police to protect the strikers "rights" against the owner's property rights ...

.....If you have read my posts in the past you know that I am not a big fan of unions who have, in my opinion, priced themselves out of the market and have lost jobs faster than business can create them ...

.....With Obama/Biden in power the unions have new and powerful friends in the White House and "Right-to-Work" States might be in peril .....COLOSSUS

To a union man 1
You oppose my Total Tax Reform plan called “One Tax And Done”. Do you really enjoy paying much more for everything than you should have to pay; and do you enjoy seeing many union jobs taxed out of existence? There is something that you haven’t considered:

It is your duty to sell the plan. It is your duty and responsibility to your union, to go to your union meetings and remind the other members that they pay a lot of money to the union as dues, and that a lot of that dues money (how much?) is given by the union bosses to state and federal Democrat-party politicians to keep them in office. Your union bosses don’t give any money to Republican-party politicians.

It is also your duty to remind the membership that these Democrat-party politicians are constantly passing more and higher taxes, some of which are to be used to give an additional 845 billion dollars to the UN. These taxes have forced and continue to force many tens of thousands of employers out of business, out of the state, and out of the country, along with all the many jobs these employers provided. This is called outsourcing, and taxes are one of the main reasons for it. Hershey’s closing of the Luden’s Candy factory where Mom worked is a good example of this. Luden’s is a union shop, and the union jobs are going to Mexico, India, and Red China, thanks to all the destructive taxes the Democrat-party politicians passed and increased.

These same Democrat-party politicians are also trying to get amnesty for the many millions of illegal aliens, so they can take jobs presently held by long-term union members. Ask members of construction unions, who have already lost their jobs to illegal aliens, about this. The politicians you are paying to keep in office are taxing millions of union jobs out of existence, and are trying to get illegal aliens into others.

To a PA union man 2
Remember that, in 1990, these Democrat-party federal-level politicians greatly increased these taxes to force tens of thousands of employers to put millions of Americans out of jobs, to anger the people and get President Bush out of office. In 1991, the democrat-controlled PA state government did the same for no apparent reason other than “they could”. How many union members lost their jobs? Did the politicians ask for union permission to destroy jobs? All union members are paying the politicians to cut union members’ throats!!!

You must get the membership to send the local union boss to the state union boss and to the national union boss. The state and national bosses should go to the state bosses and national bosses of all the other unions. All the union bosses should go to the state and federal politicians to tell them that they will not get any more money, support, and votes until they repeal all these destructive, union-job-destroying taxes and get rid of the illegal aliens who are taking union jobs. If they don’t repeal the taxes and deport the illegal aliens, use the primary election to give your support to a candidate who will.

At this time, the state and national bosses can give copies of “One Tax And Done” and “How To Get Rid of Illegal Aliens” to each politician. I’ll follow this letter with state and federal versions of it. You probably haven’t thought about it, but if all those taxes had been repealed by 1946, we would have one of the best railroad systems in the world, and you wouldn’t have to worry that Amtrak might go under and your job might not last for ten more years – a concern you’ve expressed to me. The money that these taxes take from Amtrak is needed by Amtrak to stay in business and provide jobs; and the jobs taken by illegal aliens are needed by you and your union brothers.

Governor Rendell

He was a terrible Mayor of Philadelphia and a terrible Governor of Pennsylvania.

But you wouldn't know it listening to the Liberal Media.

They don't report all the shady back room deals. They don't report the tax breaks to Rendell's friends. They don't report the contracts to Rendell's Law firm buddies.

So the way to get elected in Pennsylvania is to appoint News Media owners to "Part Time" commissions and authorities, and they will report good things about you.

Pennsylvania?
Even if Specter is re-elected the Democrats win! A Democrat by any other name is still a Democrat.

If 2010 will bring any sanity to the Senate the attention needs to be focused on Nevada. Scary Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, has presided over a stunning display of stupidity in the Senate. Let us hope that even the liberal idiots that have migrated to Clark County from The Socialist Republik of Kalifornistan will fall off of the Socialist bandwagon.

Well when it comes to the Senate
I have to vote Democrat because the Republicans got silly and voted against the auto loan. I cant vote against my retirement plans. I think the Republicans are getting a bit lost in the wilderness, and it almost makes the Democrats look appealing (not yet)! But for governor ya gotta go with a Republican.

american vet is right!
In fact this column and discussion is a waste of time. Because it doesn't MATTER anymore! Thanks to the Dims and the Liberal socialist, America and it's people have had it! As the above are hell-bent on ignoring our Constitution and replacing our Republic with Socialism, if not outright Communism! We can discuss forever what is right or wrong but nothing will veer them from their path to Socialism.

People will find that their vote don't mean crap and the American People no longer have a say in anything the new Socialist Government does.

Subject: Chris Matthews???
Hello, this is the same as running that dunce Al Franken, who is currently in the lead in Minnesota. This is exactly what happened in Washington State, remember??? HOW could they vote for that Moron Al Franken in the first place???
Yes, Rick Santorum helped the moron Specter, and got voted out for his help. WHY was Rick Santorum voted out, I never got that one?
Every one NEEDS to e-mail Specter, who was in October or November pushing for another Scamnesty bill, when 10 MILLION LEGAL citizens are out of work. HOW can the Demoncrats be so Stupid???
I agree Good Ol'Bad Guy, Harry Reid from SEARCHLIGHT, Nevada, needs a searchlight to find his SORRY ARSE!!! Every time he comes out to speak, I want to vomit! HOW was he ever elected to The Senate leadership??? HOW??
AND Harry Reid, the Hispanic's, and the Unions in Nevada are lobbying as I type for an Amnesty, Harry and Pelousy are both PUSHING for it, better get thee to http://www.NumbersUSA.com, and sign on and send those FREE, FREE, FREE, faxes to your congresscritters.

Al Franken....
mimimary,

The comedian Franken may be a good choice. He would go a long way in exposing that the Senate is itself a joke.

The Aging "Zito Pennsylvania"..
There use to be a time when the state power in PA was held in the Western part of the state...The population of Western PA is an aging and shrinking population...All Murtha jokes aside, politics in PA does not look like the days of Zito's youth...The population growth is in the eastern Philly suburbs and exurbs...Rendell won 7 counties in his 1st term election as Governor...Republicans like Specter can win statewide-elections...The Pat Toomey's and Rick Santorums will never again be a political force, statewide. Sorry Salena, the "vast right wing conspiracy" needs new blood and more babies to make the GOP a real player again.

Subject: Ralph
The Republicans "got silly" and voted NO on the stupid bailout??? YOU think it is OK for me who did NOTHING WRONG, and scrimped and saved and invested to LOSE big $$ in the stock market meltdown to say it is OK to save the Auto workers sorry butts when they didn't give a darn about the rest of us, but every time went on strike for THEMSELVES???? Sorry, I wasn't making BIG BUCKS, that could be invested while having the unions also take care of my retirement, I HAD TO DO IT MYSELF, and NOW you think it is up to the rest of the USA to make sure that YOUR retirement is fully funded???
I won't buy anything but a Ford product, all the rest of the USA made vechicles BROKE DOWN somewhere along the line, but that doesn't happen with my Toyota Avalon, or our Honda van, don't see any sitting along the highway either broken down! So much for crummy products that unions built, and unions think we should bail out! AND I'm from Michigan also, born and raised!

Specter
Left the people down on numerous issues, whether Democrat or Republican. The fact is, the issues we all fact are American issues & Specter is concerned only with his family, the law firm he will go to when done, & his crony buddies.
Too bad politicians elected think the have to abide by "the party" mantra, & they do not stand up for what the people of their districts want. For instance, being Democrat does not mean you like the idea of open borders for instance, yet all Dems seem to vote for almost no enforcement & benefits for law breakers.
Being Republican does not mean you vote for no regulation or poor regulations, when clear, concise, and effective regulation that protects the people is what is best.
When will we learn?

Pennsylvanians
were stupid enough to re-elect Backstabber Boy, Murtha. That pretty much defines the state.

Yo, Deputy #1: Them's FIGHTEN' WORDS!:-)

You have to remember that Gurtha Murtha was elected by a group in his district in WESTERN PA.

The rest of us wanted him OUT.... and had nothing to do with the ol' fat boy being re-elected.

And, truth be told, I'm not so convinced that he REALLY WAS re-elected.

Tim: Dep'ty is okay! He's had my "6" on

more than one occasion! He's cool!

Actually, he's been there for me on a LOT of occasions. :-)

Pennsylvania Governor's race
Governor Ed Rendell is a not so popular governor of Pennsylvania because he raised the state budget every time he submitted one higher than the cost of living, had a reputation of taking care of his beloved Philadelphia from revenue raised in other parts of the state, and his perpetual desire to toll Interstate 80. One of the individuals believed to be running for the office is the state Attorney General Tom Corbett.
But don't be misled by Corbert a Republican, he masks his law enforcement zealousness by making drug arrests all over the state. Drug arrests in Pennsylvania is like fishing in an overstocked pond. How about investigating homicide cold cases which there are many.

Tim:
First, I haven't called you any names, but if that's the way you want you got it.

Second, I had the signal dishonor of being assigned to NAVSTA Filthadelphia, when I was on active duty. While I was there I was mugged, and had over $1000 worth of camera equipment stolen. I was threatened by union thugs for having the temerity to walk to the Vet Stadium Subway Station to go to Independence Hall during a game during the NFL strike. I was called an ignorant redneck, and treated like an idiot, because of my Texan/Southern accent. Funny thing is the ignoarant anal orifices who did that had no clue what the large silver ring with the large Alexandrite in the center on the third finger of my right hand represented. Hint it was NOT a High School Ring. As far as I am concerned their is nothing wrong with Filthadelphia and most of PA for that matter that a visit by Fat Man or Little Boy could not rectify.

Deputy & Tim:Hey guys, we're on the same

side here...

Deputy, ya gotta give Tim a break... NO ONE expected the Eagles to do this well, and beat Dallas???? (They really did kind of kick some butt!)

And, Tim lets me hang out with him and sticks by me, as you do, when I get myself in trouble with the limited liberals....

Tim, you were pretty rough on Deputy.

Now, will you guys go get Backside Baci? Thanks.

:-)

Pa Blues
Look for Pa to get more Blue. The Dem machines in Pittsburg and Phila are the gifts that keep on giving. Delaware County is going Blue. Now here's the kicker. Reagan Democrats in Scranton,Wilkes-Barre,Hazleton and in Western Pa have sold out their values for upcoming welfare checks.
These are areas that consistently vote against their own self interests by voting for Hillary and Obama.
Her's what Pa will look like in 10 years or sooner. Everyone will work for Walmart but only 35 hours week and no benefits but will be happy as a pig in **** because they will have free healthcare!

Zito knows
She knows what she is talking about. Pat Meehan hasn't even declared yet and she has it nailed. He is the real deal and has a very good chance of connecting with PA voters. I hope Pat Toomey runs-everybody hates Specter up here. Everyone except Peter J Wirs and the GOP elites.

Tim
How 'bout them Birds? I didn't see it going that way at all. If that Iggles team shows up in the playoffs, they will smoke the Vikes and the Giants. It was bee-yoo-tee-ful! I feel bad for Romo but he has Jessica to comfort him...

Tim
Agreed. Running the ball and giving Buck a shot helped a lot. The D won that game, much as they have done all year. They are the best D in Philly since the "Gang Green" of 93. D Mac has put up with a lot of stuff, some deserved, some not, but he does need to quit the "Poor Donovan" routine. A lot of the criticism lobbed his way was for poor play and he should acknowledge that and move on. I don't think that he ever liked it in Philly since the draft. He is the best QB to wear midnight green, though. Let's hope that that is the team that comes to play in the postseason!

Tim:
I guess you are one of those ignorant anal orifices I ran into in Filthadelphia.

BTW, your comments about my camera gear are about as funny as rotator cuff sugery. Most of hat gear was gifts from my Dad.

Hey, Deputy and Tim: Don't MAKE ME have

to smack both of you up-side the head! :-)

And, just 'cause I'm old and short, 5'-2", doesn't mean I can't do it! My son is 6'3" and he's afraid of me!!!

(Well, actually he isn't... but he pretends he is, just to make me laugh!)

Geeze, football brings out the absolute worst in everyone....

Tim:
If you read my post about my experiences in PA, maybe you'd know why I think Pennsylvanians aren't worth p!ssing on when they're on fire.

Yoh Dep'ty: Even so, NOT COOL!
.

Mathews is sickening and sexist
I am not a Hillary Clinton fan, but Mathew's treatment of her during the primaries was disgraceful -- calling her a "she-devil," etc. Why is it okay for newscasters, etc., to make slurs about women (especially conservative women) but not about race? The CD containing "Barack The Magic Negro' is being (rightfully) condemned, but why didn't anyone in the media complain about songs calling Palin and Clinton "b*tches?" How come no one in the media was incensed by Obama supporters walking around with t-shirts calling Sarah Palin a c*nt?"

What a double standard!

Melissa: Spot on about Matthews!

In fact, the few times I've seen Matthews the past few years, I seriously wonder if he's not losing it.

When his brother, Jim, was running for Lt. Gov. in PA, he said that one of the most common questions he was asked was, "Why is your brother such a $&($%4)Y#Q ?"

About the Obama supporters walking around with t-shirts calling Sarah Palin a c*nt?

YOU ARE KIDDING! I didn't hear about that! Good thing I never saw on either... I probably would have to have said something, and then it wouldn't be pretty... etc., etc., etc.

Tim:
I said I would not p!ss on you if you were on fire. Do you need a translation?

BTW, I have not been called either a punk or twerp in about 40 years.

Tim
When it comes to your calling me names, I just consider the source as another ignorant, bigoted, loudmouthed Yankee anal orifice a la the Doofass.
