Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The joke among Republicans when Howard Dean became chairman of the Democratic National Committee was that Howard Dean had become the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

They saw the brash, unorthodox, failed presidential candidate from the tiny state of Vermont as a gift that would keep on giving. What they got instead was a low-key party-builder with a bold idea to place money and people on the ground in ruby-red states that Democrats typically wrote off.

That Republican “joke” greatly facilitated President Barack H. Obama's victory Tuesday night.

Purdue University political scientist Bert Rockman says Dean’s “50-state strategy” – compete in every state, regardless of whether it’s Republican-red or Democrat-blue – was very controversial in Democratic circles, but it was strategically right.

Rockman stresses that Dean’s strategy would not have worked with a different kind of candidate, such as John Kerry or Hillary Clinton, because “Obama was able to mobilize hugely African-Americans, young people and other minorities.” That worked especially well for him in the South and in Indiana.

Another major factor in making this work was Obama's ground and Internet campaigns; both were textbook lessons on how to apply new technology and old-style Chicago retail politics to a presidential campaign.

But the ground game and Internet network would not have existed if Howard Dean had not pioneered them. The whole model for Obama's campaign was Dean’s; Obama even brought the 2004 Dean campaign’s Internet team to Chicago to build his own network.

When Dean burst onto the scene in 2003, he was the candidate of change who believed the best way to win was to win everywhere. His was a campaign infrastructure that believed it could stand up to the political establishment on the single most difficult issue of that time, the war in Iraq. And it was a campaign predicated on the belief that someone from outside Washington without a long D.C. resume could effectively compete with the resumes that come from Washington because people want change.

Right message, right infrastructure – but, ultimately, wrong candidate.

So, Dean took that philosophy, and the people-power he had built, and elbowed his way past establishment Democrats to become the DNC chairman.

He did not make a lot of friends along the way. The clashes between him and then-chairman of the Democrats’ congressional campaign, Rahm Emanuel, were spectacular during the 2006 mid-term elections. Both wanted the same outcome — a midterm sweep of Congress — yet disagreed over the path to get there. Emanuel wanted to stick to targeted districts; Dean fought for possible wins in Bush-weakened swing districts.

Dean prevailed, and so did the Democrats.

Dean's strategy was an investment strategy. His assumption was that if you get locked into a rigid blue state/red state map, you will have no room to spare. Consequently, you should invest in a strategy that has a higher probability of yielding a surplus, even if it carries a higher probability of not meeting your minimum target in the short run.

Rockman believes Dean ultimately was right. The proof is the president-elect with a healthy Democratic Congress as his wingman on policy and on the courts.

In the end, for every Republican who lost or had a close electoral shave, it is hard to separate success of the Democrats’ strategy from the impact of President Bush's deep unpopularity and a worsening financial crisis. The moon and the stars all came together to make Dean and Obama look good.

Throughout the campaign, Republicans were stunned by Dean’s strange silence, but that is what a good party chairman does. And that is what Dean ultimately became; he never became the joke his detractors expected.

Now that Democrats have won, the DNC chair will answer to whoever becomes the Obama White House’s political director, making this the time for Dean to exit his post.

So, what should be next for the good doctor from Vermont, who as governor held the distinction of having more constituents with health-care coverage than any other governor in the union? A man who was, yes, a moderate, fiscally conservative chief executive, despite the image most people have of him?

If President-elect Obama is as serious about health care as he claimed to be on the campaign trail, Dr. Dean may become his health-care czar at the Department of Health and Human Services.

We as a nation are doomed if we depart
from the Federalist ideas of our so-called "Founding Fathers".

Unfortunately, the road we're on has a lot of dangerous curves, the tires are wearing out, the brakes are shot, the drivers have all been drunk, and we're carrying a load of explosives in the back: high taxes, freedom to sin (and restraints on religion), too much "entanglement in foreign affairs" (per Geo. Washington), paying too many people to be unsuccessful (welfare, unemployment, bailouts, etc.)...

This is the recipe for the USA becoming a third World state like Zimbabwe (also ruled by a black man who started out as a teacher).

I believe the Bible refers to our situation in Romans Chapter 1, verses 18-32.

May the LORD give Barack Obama the wisdom to lead us away from disaster and back onto the path of righteousness. May the LORD forgive us for not using our prosperity wisely. May the LORD bless the USA.

To quote the Tuna, "Let's hold up on the
annointing oil just yet." He was talking about Romo but could be talking about dims. Some very blind and dumb people gave them the reins based on propaganda machine media (hey, pmm not msm - it just came to me and with Oblaba's Truth Squad it will fit perfectly) developed by Hi-liar-y and BJ, the projectionists (vast left wing not right), and honed by Dean undermining our troops while they fought for us with his Vietnam revisted tour. That is the reason for the voter being so confused about dims. Drilling, coal and nuclear will ruin our environment even though the rest of the world is using it and saving and building jobs, pro choice is progressive but let's don't worry about those infants in the last trimester and the judges that condone it, illegals are the backbone of the country while they drain our social, medical and education system and will mean more votes and the ultimate Dean and Oblaba award, the terrorists win! Guilty as he!! and in control of the world. Ain't it a great country!

This is actually a blessing ....
we have to build on the local level. Civil disobedience is required. The money that is sent to capitals should remain home at Town Hall.
Big, coersive, distant government is in the long run, as much of an enemy, and possibly more so than foreign governments.
The only friends of Big Government are those who are recipients of funding stolen from others.
Possibly folks should read the 'boring' material written by the founders instead of being good little consumer-producers.

Words of caution
The author is correct that OB has an opportunity to implement profound changes to our American way of life.

Before he and the heavily democrat congress proceed it would be well that they weigh carefully the words of Windston Churchill:

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure. It's the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. Its inherent value is the equal sharing of misery."

-Winston Churchill

Dean had NOTHING
to do with this train wreck. it was 100% McCain.

Cliff, you're right & colngprnts, no way
do these dims give a hoot about history except how they can revise it like good little leftists. Cliff has the right idea that I called for after 2006 to get the House back. I've given up on red state senators primarily because of McCain, Lugar, Hagel, Graham, Stevens and the NE rinos. Locally in these districts we can make our points in the previous post. Energy, immigration, judges and dims do not think like normal Americans. If you give them facts, now that we can talk normal without racism applied to every word, we will win. Work towards 2010 and Palin/Jindal will win in 2012. The facts and the economic/global disaster will be on our side not counting the new Gestapo and illegals that will vote (barring a saving filibuster).

Once again...
...leftists celebrate NOT the fact that they convinced a majority of the populace to vote for the better candidate and party for the good of the country - but that they were able to bamboozle more of the population to believe their fairy tales...the last laugh actually goes to muckmood armadinnerjacket.

my 2 cents
let's lick our wounds, grumble, shout a bit, grin and bear it for a bit and then come out swinging because the first thing that b o is going to do is to sign the Freedom Of Choice Act, in other words - abortion on demand.

Catholics out there - recommended reading:

"Confronting the Language Empowering the Culture of Death" - Studies in the thought of John Paul II, compiled by William Brennan

Sapientia Press of Ave Maria University

We have a fight on our hands and untold millions of babies are counting on us to help prevent their murder.

50,000,000 is enough

God is watching us

Over confidence will be down fall
The bail out of 2007 was wrong just as all forms of welfare. The democrats can take the mandate from the conservative base and become over confident or the Republican party can wake up. In 2010 there should be no Democrat running for any office that does not have an opponent remember 2006. It is time to stop giving Democrats free rides and use the campaign contributions of unopposed officials to unseat Conservatives and Republicans. Welfare of the corporations or the healthy is wrong and benefit no one in the United States.

To Summarize:
Dean is a genius because he put industrial strength duct tape over his mouth, stayed away from news cameras and climbed on the back of the wagon of the Biggest Cheater Ever. Wow what a guy.

Less was more Patrick
Ms. Zito connects some valid dots in an effort to fathom the stradegy of Chmn Dean. What was missing is the remembrance of Dean's infamous growl and the subsequent tossing of rotten vegetables from the main stream (drive by) media, driving the poor man from the stage of relevancy. The action by the press was totally opposite of what the judgmentalists rightistas say the media does - uplift the democrats without exception.
Big exception there. Anyway, Zito is clear about the obvious. Mr Dean kept the discipline of his objective. He did not volunteer for Limbaugh and Hannity fodder.
the results speak for the plan. Patrick says that 'they' can "take the mandate from the conservative base". Look, ideas have no patent pending. Good leadership is not waiting for approval from the left out. The conservative base is a myth for certain today.
The base is a two legged chair, it cannot stand without the prop of a third leg, that leg is the myth of Ronald Reagan.

Deans Attitude toward the electorate
Q: As president, what would be the least popular, most right thing you would do?
DEAN: I signed a civil unions bill which gave equal rights to gay and lesbian people when only 35% of the people in my state supported it. That's what American people want. They do not want people who are going to promise them everything. What they want is somebody who's going to tell them where they stand.

Salena
Did you get Pennsylvania really, really wrong? LOL

Will Gingerich be the GOP's Dean?
Or maybe even Huckabee? I will be interesting to watch the Republican Party attempt to rebuild itself after losing it conscience along the way. Both these men have been working behind the scenes to get the GOP back on track. The old illuminati have blown it. We need some fresh faces and the guts to remember the old ideas.

Howard Dean
Must be doing his laughing in a Rubber Room these days. Has anyone seen/heard anything from him?

good column
Dean is a smart competent man. He has a personality which is not what we tend to choose in a president, and so he likely will never get that job. But any job he gets into he is likely to do a good job.

It Was Bush
Yes Howard Dean did a great job building the Dem party into a 50 state battle. But it was Bush who caused the Republican Party to once again become diminutive and irrelevent.

Look back 8 short years. When Bush was sworn in the Republicans controlled the executive and legislative branches and had a majority of state governors. Instead of further building the party, he frittered it away. It was not his national defense strategy but the tactics of fighting the terrorists. The surge worked in Iraq because he listened to the commanders on the ground. The same tactics could have been used from the get-go rather than the minimalist approach by Rumsfeld.

Instead of listening to his conservative base, those who put him into office, Bush decided to side with those who hated him, the liberal base of the Democratic Party.

Gingrich or Huckabee won't be of any help. Gingrich brilliantly made the 1994 sweep in the House, but blew that with his childish feud with Clinton leading to the government shut down. Huckabee is not a conservative. I don't care a whit that he is pro-life. That alone does not define conservativism. He loves big government and big spending. He is a populist that thinks he can crack jokes like a late night pop show.

COUNTER ATTACK

.....Peter Hitchens waved good-by to America and wrote that we had begun the long slow decent into the Third World ...well I'm not going without a fight ...

.....Conservatives who are looking for a place to congregate and mobilize a comeback of Conservative values should check out Michael Reagans new web site http://www.reaganaction.com ...

.....The time to take a stand against the Socialist tide is now ...the first battle will be in 2010 .....COLOSSUS

Enjoy it while you can, Dean...
After Obama destroys the economy and the Democrats get trounced in the 2010 mid-terms as a result, Howard Dean may not be laughing.

And if one of the many pending birth certificate lawsuits against Obama and the DNC are able to expose the candidate as a fraud who is ineligible to serve as President, Dean may be crying as he seeks counsel to defend himself against class action lawsuits from everyone who submitted campiagn contributions to a Kenyan-born con-man.

Dr. Dean may become his health-care czar
Well at least you got his title right. CZAR

Those Who Laugh First Laugh Last!
I once had an opposing attorney who stole a lot of money from me by unethical acts say to me, "I know the money belongs to you, but you're never going to see one dime." My Italian friend said, "You know Mr.....those who laugh first laugh last." And, he did have laughs at my expense, but a few months later, his picture was on the TV and reported that he had been shot by a former client's ex-husband in his office which was very sad, but it made me realize that life is very short and our actions in this world can help people or hurt people and those who laugh at those who are hurting are only hurting themselves. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time and I do believe that the truth shall prevail in time, so in the mean time, remain optimistic and in peaceful ways attempt to seek the truth and continue to look up for guidance.

Salena
This satire is almost as good as Coulter, almost not quite, lmao.

Rose somehow
they fooled 60 some odd million! I hope the "some of the people all the time" part of that quote isnt what we have just experienced.

Cliff @ 12:59
When you talk about civil disobedience, don't forget about Obama's Gestapo which will be armed with the weapons presently carried by our military and which will have permission to shoot as their choice.

colngprints; They already know this.

Terry: After abortion on demand come mandatory abortion, like in China.

Deal Done with Dean
What everyone is missing here s the the undisclosed millions from Move on.Org that went into all of these races. And as well the get out the vote ACORN scam, funded by the DNC, funded by one of the richest hedge fund owner George Soros, who will be lightky spanked by Waxman in his congressional hearing.

Middle American Values

Howard Dean just doesn't share middle american values.
