Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

It’s complicated.

Pennsylvania is a “purple” state that must go Democrat blue instead of Republican red for Barack Obama to win the November election. John McCain does not need Pennsylvania to win the White House, but Obama sure does.

Matt Lebo, a political science professor at the State University of New York’s Stony Brook campus, says that even with new states in play for Democrats, a winning electoral map for Obama without the Keystone State is difficult to envision. “If Obama were to lose Pennsylvania, it would be because he didn't appeal enough to her voters, even less so than John Kerry” in 2004, he says.

Lebo reasons that losing Pennsylvania in the fall points to larger problems. “Whatever it would be that would hurt him to the point of losing there, would also hurt Obama elsewhere, especially in Michigan and Ohio.”

University of Virginia professor Larry Sabato explains that America’s political landscape is like playing with 50 pieces of a complicated puzzle: “There are thousands of potential combinations of electoral votes, with over 80 ways the Electoral College can tie, and about 30 reasonable combinations that produce a tie.”

Sabato says that if Obama is losing Pennsylvania going into November, it will be a bad sign for his candidacy. “That would suggest that other, even more competitive states may be going to the Republicans.”

Pennsylvania has grown comfortable in her role as a battleground state. A high-roller in both the 2000 and 2004 general elections, the Keystone State became the center of the political universe this spring with the unprecedented six-week primary race between Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Clinton won on sheer political tenacity and a lot of sideline heavy-lifting by Gov. Ed Rendell’s political machine. Of the state’s 67 counties, Obama won just seven.

“One of the main reasons that Barack Obama did not do well here in the primary is that he is a ‘change’ candidate and we just don’t embrace change,” says Philadelphia Democratic analyst Larry Ceisler.

Ceisler, a Western Pennsylvania native, says most Pennsylvanians are born and die in the state and, “even if we lose our jobs, we stay here.”

He says Obama faces some obstacles among state machine politicians. For example, “he did not play the street-money game in Philadelphia and there is resentment for that. … He probably did not get a good black vote because of that.”

Ceisler says Obama's map to winning the state is the same map that any Democrat uses: “Roll up big numbers in the city of Philadelphia and just not get your head handed to you in Western Pennsylvania and the rest of the state.”

“McCain is going to be extremely competitive in Pennsylvania,” he warns. “I think from a personality standpoint, he is going to play very well.”

McCain’s potential challenges here will be the same that they are in every rust-belt battleground: his economic message, his position on the war, and George Bush as baggage.

Oddly, McCain’s age works for him in Pennsylvania; lots of older voters will be happy to support his candidacy rather than risk someone younger.

The key for McCain is to win over Clinton Democrats from the primary as well as to maximize turnout among Republicans and pro-McCain coalitions.

He needs geographical voting blocs to go his way, too. He must win the traditionally conservative “T” across the top of the state and down the center – but he also must “corner” Obama, meaning a four-corner strategy of wins in Erie (the northwest), Allegheny, Washington and Westmoreland counties (the southwest), Scranton, Lackawanna, Luzerne and Wilkes-Barre (the northeast) and Bucks County (the southeast).

If he can box Obama in those regions, he’ll win Pennsylvania and the White House.

Ceisler cautions that Democrats should not forget “the Ridge factor” – former two-term Republican governor Tom Ridge, considered a hometown boy from Erie down to Allegheny County – “even if he is not on the ticket.”

Ceisler, Lebo and Sabato all agree that while it is not impossible for Obama to win without Pennsylvania, it will come down to how many red states turn blue, and whether they are enough to compensate.

Lou Barletta - sign of times
I live in TX and I love PA. Heck, I love all our states. Any place in the USA is far superior to any where else on the globe.

Look at how well Lou Barletta is doing in PA.

A sign of the times.

Politicians - pay heed!

Cornering Penn-maybe or not
I'd be a bit careful about claiming I need or don't need any particular state. The last two presidential elections were so close a few thousand votes in a few states could have given Gore or Kerry or Bush near landslide elections. Or maybe the last few presidential candidates have taken the dangerous habit of writing off states too far.

Take a look at history- most Presidential races are not that close in electoral count. Pick the wrong states to write-off and you're toast.

Then there's also the possibility ..
that Hillary will be the candidate and PA could go for her. Don't laugh. She has not released her delegates.

Boy, these Obama columns just KEEP ON
COMING (and coming.... and coming....)

Whether they're interesting or not, whether they're just a rehash of what was said more artfully last week, whether or not the columnists has lost all perspective and is really just churning out another hit-job or fluff piece.

I guess that's one of the dangers of working on a political website: all the John McCain and Barack Obama columns, written by marginally passable, not special, writers, tend to start to blur together and congeal into one big lump of agitprop.

Let's see what information Salena Zito has to impart to us this week:

“One of the main reasons that Barack Obama did not do well here in the primary is that he is a ‘change’ candidate and we just don’t embrace change,” says Philadelphia Democratic analyst Larry Ceisler.

Hmmm. Fascinating, fascinating. Glad I came to Townahll for that nugget of info.

Just a little over 3 months till the election....

...Also the possibility
Robati:

Or a conservative state for Barr instead of McCain??

Neither seems very likely but then ... who thought we would have these two numbnuts in the first place?

Pennsylvania grassroots speaks
Mayors know what is up in their towns. True retail grassroots politics.

PA mayors view immigration control as a major issue.

Neither the Dems nor GOP can wish that away.

The nearly 400 members of the PA statewide mayor's association voted unanimously to award Lou Barletta "Mayor of the Year" for his work in combating the illegal alien problem.

Fear the Rendell/Nutter machine
I just spent a sabattical in PA. I came away impressed by Gov. Rendell, not of course for his liberal policies, but his old-time machine like tactics on behalf of hillary. Zito mentions him, but does not stress him enough.

Add this to black, new Mayor Nutter of Phil., and i'm afraid that the substance of Zito's column is about 5 years old. Unfortunately, I think a more relevant yeardstick was Rick Santorum losing to Bobby Casey. For me Santorum is about as an appealing pure conservative (defense, social issues) and a good man No scandals)and yet he got beaten soundly.

PS I think that, even though we know what he means, the poli sci prof who used the term "street money" in the Phil black neighborhoods can be accused of racism, or at least condescension, as in 'these poor ignorant folks, they'll only vote if we slip them a sawbuck' etc. That attitude, and especially that rhetoric, will get the conservative clock cleaned, and rightly so.

With Buck as an ally,
who needs enemies. thanks for the 'shotgun blast first, ask questions later'treatment.

Yes, I am from the Peoples' Republic of MA, but if you had ever read any of my posts, you would know that I am part of the 1/3 of MA conservative citizens who are against everything this commonwealth stands for.

I don't think winning PA will be as easy as Buck alleges. But i do agree with him that the key area is the northeast. if i were john and cindy mccain i would set up light housekeeping in Scranton. it and the whole corner is filled with what used to be called Reagan democrats. there mccain must stress his pro-life bona fides, but it has to be more than that.

somehow, mccain needs an infusion of Reagan style optimism, confidence, cheerfulness, leadership qualities.

as always, the whole election will come down to the 20% in the middle. TH readers on the one hand, and daily kos on the other end, can be taken for granted. how to charm, more with honey than vinegar, another 11%, that is the question, and on the face of it, obomination is more charming than johnny mac.

Thanks Buck, better to save
our verbal nuclear weapons for the demon-crats.

PS I'll throw you this one. My brother was on active duty USAF. He said that the other guys called him and other MA residents m*ssholes. And that is an apt description of the clueless 2/3 of this state who vote for Kennedy, Kerry, Barney Frank, etc. literally ad nauseum.

Buck, another peace offering:
I just read on the Boston Herald site (much more conservative than the ultra-liberal Globe, baby brother of the NYtimes)that Bob Kraft, owner of the NEPatriots, is contributing the maximum amount to McCain. a very 'patriotic' act, pun intended.

happy Sunday, although its raining up here, may not get to golf this afternoon.

Winning Pennsylvania
As a resident of Pennsylvania from one of the north central counties, I can tell you that I will NOT be voting for Obama. One sign of hope I'm seeing in the northeast is the fact that Kanjorsky is having to campaign hard against Barletta. I can't remember ever seeing so many ads from him before. I think he's running scared....and I hope that the tide is turning. Of course, many of us think Rendell is a total buffoon who has done nothing for most of the state and are eager to see the last of him.

What if Ohio and Pennsylvania switch?
We will know in three months.

I don't think anyone argues Obama won't get at least 95% of the black vote in Pennsylvania.

But McCain is the type of candidate who will do well in most parts of Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia and other major cities.

I think Zito raises some valid points.

A good question is whether there is more likelihood Pennsylvania goes to the GOP, or Ohio going to the Democrats.

I can see both happening.

A poor economy, plus corruption in state GOP circles, has put Ohio in play for the Democrats.

The more McCain can run as a maverick republican, not the candidate identified with the establishment GOP, the better chance he stands...especially in Ohio, but perhaps also in Pennsylvania.

All Obama all the time
Townhall is becoming all Obama all the time. Hardly a mention of McCain his record his policies his actions. Its all about Obama. Even the posters never mention McCain. Yesterday, I counted the references to Obama and compared them to the references to McCain. Obama has it four to one.

How can Conservatives complain about the MSM when their media is all Obama all the time, even if it is to criticize him. What does it say about McCain that this election boils down to a vote against Obama.

HERE IN PA

AMAZING.

Only way to describe the fact that PA is in play for McCain.

It tells much about the "quiet" support for McCain and why the polls remain close.

Consider the following. THEN consider that McCain is doing well here. It's nothing short of astounding.

1. PA is run by a powerhouse Dem. Machine out of Philadelphia. Dems. have ran the House of Rep. for over 35 years.

2. Every large city newspaper-Philly Inquirer,
Philly Daily News, Allentown Morning Call, Harrisburg Patroit, Pittsburg Post Gazette-might as well be on the "Obama For President" payroll. This is what we put with by the "objective" print media here in PA.

3. The state's governor, Ed Rendell, is one of top Democrats in the nation.

However, no one here has forgotten "Rev" Wright. Also, the comments made in San Franciso by Obama during the PA primary have not been forgotten.

The White Working Class Vote IS a huge factor in PA. In this election, too.

If you're looking for a reason why McCain, who despite everything, might pull victory from the jaws of defeat, look here.

Joseph
was right in his post. Bucks reflexes are the fastest here at TH, too. The Santorum/Weldon scenario is what I beleive will happen here in PA in the fall. I don't think McCain has a chance in PA. But reality awaits!

Then it is over
"The key for McCain is to win over Clinton Democrats from the primary as well as to maximize turnout among Republicans and pro-McCain coalitions. "

When McCain came to Wilkes Barre this past week even after days of phone banking and local publicity the crowd was less than 800 people in a 1700 theater. No interest, none at all. The old warrior is simply losing folks at every stop

Hal

Keep the record straight. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is a Democratic stronghold.

Here's what matters. If McCain wins it will NOT be because of McCain. An AGAINST Obama vote will be the reason! This election could mirror the last one with Ohio and Florida, and now PA, being key states. It could be very close. Again.

Problem with Obama
is he loves to see himself on camera.

He is chicken shi% when it comes to facing a townhall meeting with McCain. Obama is not able to face the public and answer questions from ordinary people is pure chicken shi%.

He should lose evey state and get the message that people vote for someone who speaks to them and not have to go to Germany and boost that country up. What a shameful act Obama is.

Come on Obama, face the townhall people, show some guts.

It could but from what I see it won't even Republicans are simply disgusted at the conservatives. America deserves better than McCain and the old conservative hate and division

Don't underestimate the demonic dems

They do have a stronghold in PA. Just ask Curt Weldon!!

"Berger began his spring offensive in March 2006 with a fund-raiser for Weldon's opponent, Joe Sestak. Almost universally despised by his Naval colleagues, the former vice admiral was forced into retirement for what the U.S. Navy charitably called "poor command climate." Before being recruited to run for Congress, Sestak had not lived in Weldon's district for 30 years....................."

But, that's NOT TO SAY that we can't make PA a Republican Commonwealth....

In fact, just ask halDoofus. Even he's helping the Bill Russell-R campaign to roll out ol' Gurtha Murtha to the dust bin of history! :-)

Oh and, thanks doofus!

Doofus whines:"The Americans want change

Uuuh, no they don't! Only the intellectually limited libs who are "blind followers" of Marxist Obama.

You know, the whiners who think the govt. owes them.

Ah yes we do but conservatives certainly do not somehow they bought into a manufactured mythology and history bearing little symbolence to facts. Kind of like that Utah e-mail you posted on BO blog - did you retract that yet?

for JMO51
JMO51 writes: "How can Conservatives complain about the MSM when their media is all Obama all the time, even if it is to criticize him. What does it say about McCain that this election boils down to a vote against Obama."

Conservatives have never felt comfortable with McCain and his maverick image. Polls show that conservatives still like Bush more than they like McCain, exactly the opposite view from the entire rest of the country.

So unlike Reagan or Bush 41, the only way to get conservatives to vote in November is to get them to vote against Obama. They sure aren't voting because they like McCain. Most of them don't.

And the kind of hard-right, anti-immigrant, anti-gay, pro-life, bomb-Iran hawk that the conservatives could really get enthusiastic about (a guy like Tom Tancredo or Duncan Hunter) wouldn't stand a chance in the general election.

Infanticide
Obama defends infanticide.

It's far more sinister than that....

Bush is underestimated - he will

Did anyone get the number of the bus
that ran over McCain this morning on CBS.

Hagel and Reed were on, both giving glowing reports on 'Bama.

Hagel twisted the proverbial knife so deep in Juans back, I swear I could see the blood splattering on the screen.

Hagel even as much as said he would Obambis VP.

BlackMan1
It does sadden me to see an old war hero like McCain losing it and even resorting to clear lies, personal attacks and using the troops to justify himself. It is sad, very sad. He served the nation well once upon a time

"Resorting to lies"
What lies?

I agree we haven't heard many lies from Obama. But then, we haven't heard much of anything of substance. All we hear about is change.

Change to what? More socialism? Giving in to Islam?

Any why can't McCain tell about Obamas shortcomings; that's a personal attack?

Exactly right, Bucko sweetie pie...

That's exactly where I lived.. Chester
County... horse country, and I still have a house in horse country!

And my kids went to Episcopal Academy and Agnes Irwin. Anymore questions????

And, you little impudent punk, I KNOW EXACTLY who my congressmen WAS and IS... But for many years, Curt Weldon had an office at 30 S. Valley Road in Paoli. But, THAT was not the point.

THE POINT WAS, (pay attention here!!!) the background... and the liberal dirty politics... even in DC, behind Curt losing that election. And it was NOT as simplistic as apparently you're only capable of understanding!

Now, sit down and shut up until you 1. get some manners, and 2. learn a few things about what really happened!!!!!!!!

Okay, believe what you will...

I haven't the time nor the inclination to bother with an ignorant, ill mannered and insignificant delinquent, know-it-all, such as yourself.

Your behavior and posts just demonstrate that you're beneath contempt.

And, btw, at least neither of my kids would EVER, in a million years post, or speak to anyone as you do.

Trust me, little delinquent, you obviously have not even a clue what proper etiquette or good form is, as you've demonstrated so very well.

And "We don't tolerate... " Who is "we?" You and your little playmates at Conestoga public school? Ha! I live right smack dab in the middle of what you only wish was "your turf" and obviously more "connected" than you could ever hope to be here or in DC.

Dream on, but don't bother me anymore. :-) Cheers.

Why dims will lose
They've based their whole strategy on fooling (lying) to the American people in the name of politics. It would be comedy central/snl hilarious (pathetic comedy) if it weren't so deadly serious for our troops. Once again the likes of Wallace, Stephanopolous, Scheifer and Brokaw try to give credibility to the shifting war strategy of the Oblaba/dims with some idiot anti-war critic like McCaskill or Hagel or trying to determine what amount of days Oblaba means and when they start. What a crock! This guy couldn't command troops or protect this country with Dwight Eisenhower and FDR as his advisors.

Bottom line is they jumped right on the anti-surge/"war is lost" bandwagon of Pelosi/Reid/Kerry/Durbin/Kennedy -heck the whole bunch- which means they don't care what the strategy is as long as they can talk down the admin/military strategy whether in Iraq or Afghanistan. An emboldened jackjob in Iran or terrorist recruiting is a direct result of the msm/dim agenda of snatching defeat from the jaws of necessary victory (self fulfilling prophecy of Vietnam revisited).

Pennsylvanians are just as aware of this as anyone else. The Republicans better make sure they keep reminding voters.

Jeff Davis Would Be Proud
Pennsylvania and Ohio are slave states. They will do what they're told to do. They will go socialist this year and they will dutifully give up their guns.

Where else are they going to go? Who else but their Messiah will give them their surplus government butter and cheese?

They will forget Obama's condescending remarks. All that you need do to slaves is pat them on their heads, promise to lighten their load a bit, then shaft them thereafter.

Those with slave mentalities accept their lot in life. Standing independent of Hillary or Obama is hard work, too much for slaves to endure.

Sure, sure, go cheer the Steelers and the Eagles, give each other high fives. Whatever. But don't you dare try to get off the plantation because the Earth is flat and you'll fall off.

It is over for McCain your guy is using the troops what say you about that last ad pure lies, disinformation and crying. The troops kn ow it and you darn well should too. That is my comment last night. McCain is desparate and can not even fill small venues....I hate to see a hero like him so desparate and weak...

Why do I even bother with you maroons...
Obama is up by 12 in the recent Quinnipiac and 6 in Rasmussen in PA (and Ras is a Republican pollster guys). He actualy increased his leads by 4 points and 2 points in the last month in both polls. He's trending UP in PA, not down (and this is before his recent 5 point bounce in the Ras and Gallup polls nationally came out this weekend after the trip).

McCain has a reasonable chance to pick off upwards of three Kerry states (NH, MI and MN). He's trailing in all three but the demographics play well for him in NH and MN (namely, very few black people) and MI is always a crapshoot and is in play if Romney is the VP.

But PA is hella locked for Obama, just as it was for Kerry and Gore. Stop lying to yourselves, this is why people laugh at you. You might as well say that CA is in play or NY.

538.com has PA as an 80% shot for Obama in PA, as strong as SD is for McCain.

Stop being silly and try looking at things rationally, not through the eyes of a drooling sycophant.

halDoofus: Where DO YOU come up with the

outrageous fantasies you post?????? When you're drunk, or just after you've done yet another header off the bar stool?

Inquiring minds want to know... 'cause you DO come up with some far fetched, crazy illusions.

But, thanks again. More money for the "Elect Bill Russell" jar.

Questions for Hal
Hal, when you were an officer and gentleman by an act of congress, was it your style of leadership to tell your subordinates that their missions were hopeless and that they were losing?

Did you spend your time engaging in hairsplitting debates and arguments with those you served with, while they were trying to accomplish things?

How long have you been a total dick?

I do know the Air Force lowered its OTS selection standards back in the '70s. Those were dark days for the military. You were fortunate, weren't you?

Thankfully you're out and can't do any more damage.

Our military is doing very well over there as many of us with loved ones know.

Go git fitted for a turban so your fellow citizens can know what you're about. Quit skulking about in the shadows. Come out, let us see who you are.

Dallas Cicero: Excellent! NAILED it!

In fact, I think you covered pretty much everything... HA HA HA...

halDoofus was, as I've been told, a "pencil pusher." Nothing more, but we certainly can understand why he most likely was not let anywhere near the troops.

And YES! You are SPOT ON! "Our military is doing very well over there as many of us with loved ones know."

A number of us are frequently in touch with troops who are there... some who have volunteered for their second and third tours, (this does NOT include "Robert" however, who is there only in his dreams!) who report that things are going VERY WELL!

God Bless Them ALL!

ReadABook
He's back-k-k-k. What is a maroon? I thought it was a color or to be left on an island or something. Who are you calling a 'maroon'?

Curt Weldon
Curt Weldon was a good congressman. So his family got caught up in some hanky-panky.

I don't know anything about his successor, but if he is a Democrat,he is or soon will be much dirtier than Weldon ever was.

But the more crooked a Democrat is,the more popular with his constituents he is. And that's just the way it is.

Rowly (#73) writes
"I don't know anything about his successor, but if he is a Democrat,he is or soon will be much dirtier than Weldon ever was"

Wrong tense Rowly--it is already known that Sandy Burglar campaigned for Joe Sestak to SPECIFICALLY remove Weldon; proof that a SEWER is actually cleaner than Sestak!

svpallava
I did say'he is or soon will be'. I knew if he was a Democrat he was crooked. Did not realize it was Sestak. I saw him on the Donnelly hearing yesterday.

I didn't know Sandy'The Theft' Berger helped him. Sestak,on the hearing was absolutely sickening with his condescending voice and words. A typical liberal.

Thanks for the info about Sestak. I still say Weldon was a good congressman, who got too close to exposing the criminal side of some Democrats. You just do not DO that!!

PA will probably fall to McCain
"Readabook" is dreaming a leftist dream: "But PA is hella locked for Obama, just as it was for Kerry and Gore... You might as well say that CA is in play or NY. "

PA is not a traditional Democrat state like CA or NY. It's a moderate state, with strong Democrat machines in two major cities and a Republican near-lock just about everywhere else. The key this year is that Hillary Clinton won PA handily, and McCain will capture a fair percentage of Madame Clinton's votes, for two reasons:

1) About 24% of Clinton's supporters remain off the reservation for the Democrats, and this has not changed much as the campaign has worn on.

2) The Bradley effect is going to eat Obama's lunch in the general election the same way it did in the primary. Pennsylvania is arguably the nation's most racist state. Obama is going to lose about 5% of his base simply because that many Democrats will never, ever, vote for a black candidate.

Consequently, Obama will not win the Democratic strongholds by the usual margins, and will thus lose the state. The current polls -- reflecting only political junkies in the wake of an Obama media flood -- mean nothing.

I lived most of my life in Pennsylvania, with about a 10-year stint in Alabama -- so when I say PA is the most racist state in the nation, I'm not just whistlin' Dixie.

(Unrelated to this topic, please visit my political blog, "Plumb Bob Blog: Squaring the Culture," at http://www.plumbbobblog.com. Click on my nickname and follow the links on my townhall blog. Thanks.)

National Popular Vote
The real issue is not how well Obama or McCain might do in the closely divided battleground states, but that we shouldn't have battleground states and spectator states in the first place. Every vote in every state should be politically relevant in a presidential election. And, every vote should be equal. We should have a national popular vote for President in which the White House goes to the candidate who gets the most popular votes in all 50 states.

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC). The bill would take effect only when enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral vote(270 of 538). When the bill comes into effect, all the electoral votes from those states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

The National Popular Vote bill has been approved by 20 legislative chambers (one house in Colorado, Arkansas, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Washington, and two houses in Maryland, Illinois, Hawaii, California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont). It has been enacted into law in Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Maryland. These states have 50 (19%) of the 270 electoral votes needed to bring this legislation into effect.

Pennsylvania
I just don't see Pennsylvania as being the one crucial state to decide the entire election. Right now we have a lot of time before election day, so I really don't count anything as being crucial.

What boggles my mind is how intelligent people can be brainwashed into believing whatever is thrown at them. How these same people can allow the MSM to decide for them who will win an election and be the leader of the free world.

I see BHO and JMc as both having less than what is needed in a leader of the free world. How these two recieved the nominations I feel is in direct proportion to the MSM.

Let's roll up our sleves and goout and have some old fashioned grass roots campaigning where the VOTERS decide the outcome.

Susan - National Popular Vote Bill
This bill is liberal garbage and a waste of time. This change would require a Constitutional amendment.
