Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

On a hot summer night in July 1980, an unorthodox idea floated around the halls of the Republican National Convention in Detroit.

Started by the party’s “Howard Baker wing,” the buzz suggested it would be a good idea for the GOP to have nominee Ronald Reagan pick former President Gerald Ford as his running mate.

To the Baker wing, that would solve their perception of Reagan being too conservative to win and would bring a fractured party together.

But the former president would have none of it. Ford was no fan of Reagan; he blamed Reagan for losing his re-election bid in 1976. His answer to the proposal was one he knew would never fly -- a “co-presidency.” He was right and, within 24 hours, the idea was headed for the political history books.

Leap forward 28 years, and you have Hillary Clinton chugging along with a clear path to the Democratic National Convention but not to the Democrat nomination -- provoking plenty of talk of conjoining her with Barack Obama to “heal” the party.

Political parties do amusing things when faced with the perception that their team is in trouble. Certainly there is plenty of rumbling that the Democrats’ never-ending primary will blunt any goodwill they have earned since the 2006 midterm elections.

This is why you saw Clinton’s political obituary being written a thousand times over since Tuesday night by elected Democrats and Obama-loving journalists alike. Her thumping in North Carolina and her narrow win in Indiana gave them the license they believed they needed to show her the door.

Fair enough. Say the Illinois senator is the nominee. How does he unite his wing of the party (blacks, young people and educated, latte-drinking, elite liberals) with Clinton’s wing (whites, women, Hispanics and lunch-pail Democrats)?

To “heal,” does Obama need to conjoin with Clinton?

Former longtime John McCain adviser John Weaver says that whether Obama and Clinton form a ticket or not, “coming together” will not be a problem for Democrats in November.

“Expect to see a unity lap around the country at some appropriate time by Obama and Clinton -- it will happen,” he predicts.

Ever practical, Weaver says Democrats, “in a ‘change’ election, in a probable recession, with an unpopular incumbent Republican president, with an unpopular war, will be united.”

His thoughts are predicated on an inevitable Obama nomination -- but there is always the haunting reality that Clinton just can’t quit this race.

Clinton is, by her very nature, a “Clinton” -- and Clintons don’t get forced out of anything. History and behavior patterns prove that. So even a scenario of having the Democrats’ wise men or leagues of superdelegates knock on her door to force her out might not happen -- at least not publicly.

If Clinton decides to quit, it will be on a high note, after a win in West Virginia or Kentucky, with Bill and Chelsea at her side and a pledge to help elect the next president, Barack Obama. Not forced, kicking and screaming, but graciously.

Former Democratic National Committee executive director Mark Siegel concurs: “The process to the nomination will come probably to a conclusion, if not in West Virginia, then in Kentucky or Oregon, then certainly no later than the third of June.

“The brutality of the nominating fight will make the reconciliation that much more powerful,” says Siegel, who holds a doctorate in delegate math.

He says Democrats have weathered the roughest period of the campaign and are about to shift into general-election campaign mode: “The primary season was bitter, like a lemon. The summer and the convention will be sweet, like lemonade.”

Another Democrat strategist not working on either campaign privately disputes that sugary assumption. Clinton “still has the credentials meeting on May 31 that could force the seating of Michigan and Florida” delegations, this strategist says.

Clinton can make a case to stay in the race until the convention.

But, like Gerald Ford on that hot summer night in 1980, she’s not likely to consider a conjoined ticket.

It appears the fog is lifting from the eyes of the TH columnists. It never really mattered whom won, although I think Obama will generate more money and votes, because this election is all about the last few years of GOP leadership.

Make that '...matter who won...' not whom.

I didn't read Townhall for a couple of days, so I see the format has changed. Can someone tell me how this was announced? Thanks. There's always people like me who miss the train!

The back room deal will be made and the delegates will be in on the 'fix' so everyone will be made happy.

Here's the deal: Hillary will be Obama's AG.
Then she will be nominated to the SCOTUS, where there's real power.

Say hello to Justice Rodham (see ya' later Bill)

Now that's a scary thought, but it's coming.

Why the Obama-Clinton speculation is nuts
Would this work?

Politico-The sun may be setting on Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign. But it is only just rising on what promises to be months of obsessive speculation, cheerleading and naysaying in a media and political circles on the next question: Clinton for vice president?

Absurd, say some operatives and commentators. Don’t be so sure, say others, working hard to get the Obama-Clinton ticket aloft.

The Clinton veepstakes is an ideal subject for pontificating because so few people have any hard information to know what they are talking about. That makes it easy to bluster on both sides of the question with equal conviction.

That is exactly what Politico has done. Below are five reasons the speculation about her running for vice president is nuts. Here’s a link to five other reasons it may not be.

She will extract some promise before bowing out. Maybe Parker is right-SCOTUS. That way, if Obama loses, she's still good to run in 2012.
And he gets to appear to choose his running mate.
Maybe she could get him to pay her campaign bills.

How about McCain - Clinton?

Clinton-Obama or Obama-Clinton? Not So Much
Obama will be the nominee, Hillary will be the his VP running mate.

Heres the story:

Hillary will string the primaries out to the end and about June 15 concede to Obama. This June 15 date is right after MI and FL delegates and votes are counted, which still did not make Hillary the winner. The DNC will amend their amended rules to count and seat these states at the convention.
Hillary and the DNC will spin it and say Hillary stuck out the process only because she did not want to disenfranchise the poor MI and FL voters. The DNC will concur and try and make Hillary look like she cared more for the "people" than she cared about be President. At tha point Obama with the "help" of the DNC and Dem insiders select hillary as VP running mate. Hillary will plush and tear up and thank the people she has given voice to. I'm starting to get weepy now.

Obama / Clinton?? Never.
This woman has lived her ENTIRE life wanting & planning to be POTUS. She is not going to accept 2nd chair to a novice who can only be helped across the finish line as victor with her on the ticket...8 years down the road she is too old to fulfill her lifelong obsession, especially if the Dems use the AGE FACTOR against McCain now.

It is more likely she will stay in this to the bitter end, hoping more dirty laundry on the Messiah becomes public before the convention and she can step in as the NEW savior!

Failing that, she will bide her time until 2012 when she will run again. As an Indie IF Obama wins this time around but with the Rezko trial really just beginning as well as myriad other factors (THE Mrs to name but one), Barry faces looonnnggg odds, even against a 70 something (albeit with good genes that have a proven 90 plus year shelf life).

Agree with you it's a long shot for Mr. Obama without her.
I don't think she would be considered too old in 8 years. She'll be about 67 or 68. It wouldn't be for a man, and women are longer lived. How old was Mrgaret Thatcher? Golda Meir?
The dems can use it against Mccain this year-but maybe she ought not to put quotes on tape to that effect. :-)

I don't think so. Hillary has roughly the same therapeutic properties as battery acid on a sunburn. Her 'high negatives' -- which is pundit-speak for 'people don't like her' -- are the highest since polling began.

At this point, husband-in-name-only Bill has managed to alienate even die-hard Democrats with his poor behavior. This lovely couple can't see themselves exiting the stage, but everybody else can.

TH is having many technical problems. I noticed comment pages are experiencing numerous issues. It appears that someone on TH is trying to fix the problems. I posted a comment that I thought TH's re-design was done poorly, but I think that after they get the problems fixed things will be back to normal.

Anne what do you think
Great article

McCain - Clinton...??
Ret.Geek... That's a great joke!

RG: Not with two huge egos...
They're going to duke it out to the end....

Great Article
but McCain and Clinton??

MyOpine
How do you think McCain - Clinton would work?

Anne
Why not McCain and Clinton?
Came close to being Kerry McCain once;
http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2004/5/23/122006.sht ml

Clinton endorsed McCain for Kerry's VP in 2004.

I want a BJ...
...in the White House. No, not the Clinton kind, but Bobby Jindal as JcCain's running mate.

Ummm....
... Make that McCain.

Why not Mccain - Clinton?
No one in their right mind would ever want HRC and their VP.... Probably be the SHORTEST presidency in history...

If you are still on the page, please email with your comments about what you don't like about the re-design. I have a contact at TH that I can pass your concerns along to. My email address is mrmcoupeth@yahoo.com.

My main concern is that I think the posts are harder to read. What do you think? You should know that, earlier today TH was having some technical issues due to the roll out.

Good morning to all!

Highly improbable
based on the personalities of the two candidates in question.

Obama and Clinton have never been "close" in the collegial Senate sense- he views her as an opportunistic schemer (good guess), she views him as an upstart (typical for her). Keeping peace between the two, and the factions they represent, has been one of Harry Reid's biggest headaches for the last few years.

Now, add in the personal animosity that's developed between the two in their struggle for control of the Party. Its closest comparison is Stalin vs. Trotsky in the USSR following Lenin's death. If you'll recall, that ended rather badly for Leon Davidovich- in Mexico City in 1940. There's at least as much bad blood between these two as there was between Trotsky and Uncle Joe- and for roughly the same reasons. ("I am the most radical!" "No, I am!" "I am the future of World Socialism!" "Sez you!" "Oh yeah?" "Yeah, and I'm taking you down!" "You and whose army?" etc., etc.)

Finally , the Hildebeast played second fiddle to a man she doesn't even respect (Bill) for a quarter-century to get the power she lusts after. She is SO not going to do likewise to a guy she regards as a snot-nosed wannabee. After all- She's The Queen, D****t!

My guess is, she'll stay in, do her best to bloody Obama at a brokered convention, and then sit back and wait for 2012. I'm looking for blood on the decks, as they say in the Navy, when the traveling circus gets to Denver.

So, who wants popcorn?

cheers

If HRC would ever become Vice President, the President would do well to have a food taster on his staff.
Jim, Austin,Tx

New format
Is disturbing, but the system seems to crash less often.

Obama will never be VP for HDR since he will lead in delegates, so scenario 1 is out.

Obama will never ever select HDR as his running mate. He has undoubtedly heard of Ron Brown and Vince Foster, so all he would be in the history books is the first "black president-elect". With her as VP-elect, there would be about a 99.9% chance of his having a fatal "accident" prior to Jan 20, 2009.
