Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

As the political world recovers from the shock and awe of Barack Obama's impressive single-donor campaign contributions, a very important story slipped under the radar: The Republican brand is in trouble. The first stunning evidence of that is the fundraising.

As a group, Republicans traditionally have more money than Democrats. While everyone had a case of the vapors over Obama's ATM abilities, they ignored the GOP's lackluster dollar count. Those anemic numbers show how down-in-the-mouth and problematic its presidential field is. Still in a hangover from the 2006 midterm elections, the party lacks organization, energy, focus, purpose; maybe what it needs is a political Bloody Mary.

The other obvious problem is that Republicans need a new face on the party. For that to happen, George Bush needs to step back and let the country see how Democrats behave when they have the leadership. That will not happen easily with Bush, not even for the sake of his party. Why do you think he made all of those recess appointments? To send the message that he is relevant.

To make matters worse, no Republican leadership faces exist beyond Bush. Ask your average, mildly informed person who is the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and most will know it is Howard Dean. Do the same for the head of the Republican National Committee, and you will probably get a blank stare.

Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, appointed as a Bush friend, shares that post with Mike Duncan. What the Republican Party should have done was to elect its own chairman, a healthy process for any party.

It was the best thing the Democrats did with Dean. Love him or loathe him, at least Dean has a personality and a plan. Martinez? Not so much.

The Republican base is disgruntled with the party's lack of leadership, and that shows in the overall money raised. It shows in this "Great White Hope" philosophy that Republicans feel right now with a possible Fred Thompson candidacy. And it shows in the way conservatives and evangelicals are sitting on their hands.

Typically, Democrats are crying out for some savior who will swoop in to rescue everyone. The perfect example was the big flirtation with Wesley Clark in the last presidential cycle.

Now, Republicans are in search of their Gipper.

Fred Thompson is not the answer for the GOP as much as he puts a fine point on the fact that there is no solution, that there is a greater problem.

The unraveling of John McCain -- who could still end up the nominee -- highlights the party's plight.

Here was a guy looked at for so long as not just the inevitable nominee, but as the inevitable next president. He seemed unstoppable; he had appeal as a maverick, as an independent; it was just a matter of waiting for him to set up in the Oval Office.

Now he is in the fight of his life for the nomination. He came in third in fundraising; he has lost the appeal that made him so appealing.

A fundamental problem exists with the Republicans' brand: They are in a shaky transition period, one in which they need to redefine what it means to be a mainstream conservative. For the longest time, the Republican Party stood for lower taxes, less government and a strong national defense, the principles of Ronald Reagan.

For now, it seems stuck in a crisis of midlife proportions.

Surely, you jest!
You are JUST NOW stating the OBVIOUS? Where have y'all been?

Yes indeed. A Reagan Era Conservative needs to step up to the plate. The TERRIBLE THREE of the GOP AIN'T IT! I see NO difference between them and the Leftinistra morons currently in the mix...NONE AT ALL.

If another Gipper doesn't spring forth, this country is lost.

Gipper, someone whose lies stuck
Since Stockman is in the news today, we can stroll back through yesteryear when Reagan got elected promising to balance the budget. As soon as he was elected, he cut taxes, raised spending and created even bigger deficits than the ones he promised to get rid of. It took a real man (appitite for interns and all) to actually balance the budget.

Do you really want a "Reagan" anymore?
A lot of Republicans keep asking wistfully for "another Reagan." But maybe with the passage of time, nostalgia has grown to the point that they forgot who Reagan was.

First, Reagan was a Hollywood actor who was himself divorced and remarried, with children from both marriages. Today's social conservatives who profess to be horrified at parental divorce and Hollywood wouldn't have been too happy with him.

Second, while candidate Reagan (and then President Reagan) paid lip service to the hot-button social issues, they were NOT his main priorities and he didn't take many substantive actions along those lines.

I still have Reagan's original 1980 campaign brochures as memorabilia, and they don't even mention social issues much. They talk about national defense, they talk about the economy, they even talk about improving relations between America and our allies.

That reflects the general attitude of the GOP rank-and-file back then. Back in 1979-80, surveys consistently showed that most ordinary Republicans wanted a President who would restore America's pre-eminence in the world, both economically and militarily.

Apparently that's not true anymore.

If today's GOP rank-and-file truly care more about stopping abortion and same-sex marriage than they do about stopping Islamic terrorism and Iranian nuclear weapons development, then they are going to get the candidate they deserve. And it won't be a "Reagan type."

To SteveL
Not all conservatives are of the hard religious bent. That is another myth promulgated by the leftist media. Some of us want a strong defence, low taxes, and a small government based on what the Constitution actually says. Some us oppose Roe V Wade for legal reasons more than religious ones.

Okay, liberalgoodman
Tell us exactly what Clinton did, all by himself, that balanced the budget.

Reagan indeed lowered taxes and the economy during his time in the White House increased federal revenue. The Democrat-controlled congress happily overspent the increased revenue. Since Reagan didn't control the budget, there was nothing he could do about that. Those of us old enough to remember the 80s remember Tip O'Neill and "Dead on Arrival."

Come to think of it, though, there are five major things Reagan did to bring the economy back around during his first term in office. Only one of them was lowering marginal tax rates. Can you name the other four?

Bush Family Style of Government
Too many Bush family cronies have been appointed to various positions (party hacks), taking the patronage system to extremes. Alas, the Bush Family has chosen to mortgage the future of the Republican Party for their immediate political gain. The end result has been a mediocre presidency and a weakening of the Republican party.

In addition, a failed policy in Iraq saddles the American taxpayers with additional debt and an uncertain future. The prospects of another terrorist attack on American soil loom before us, waiting for the moment a future administration lowers it's guard. Consequently, our largest cities are not really safe anymore, despite spending millions of dollars on "Homeland Security".

Articulate, strong leadership with verified conservative credentials like Ronald Reagan may not come along for another generation, if ever. So, America continues it's long decline, barely noticed by anyone.

I'm very sorry to agree with Geronimo...
...but I'm afraid that the older I get, the more I realize that a Reagan comes along once a generation at best. We may not see his like again in our lifetimes. I look years forwards and backwards from his administration and see only very, very small men.

I sincerely hope to be proven wrong.

Gipper
The man who can win one for the Gipper; more importantly for America is Rep. Duncan Hunter. I challenge each of you to check out his bio, record and stances oin the issues. The man was an Airborne Ranger in Vietnam. He was elected to Congress in 1980 and re-elected ever since. He has served as a member of the House Armed Services Committee since his second election, as Chairman for four years, and is now Ranking Member. His son Duncan D. Hunter is a Marine Captain who has served two tours in Iraq, and was just called up for a third tour there.

He has done things to help stanch the flow of drugs and criminals from below our Southern border. Check out the San Diego-Tijuana border fence. That was in 1994. He wrote the bill to extend that fence across the borders of
Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The fence is designed to both stop illegal crossing, and to save needless deaths in the desert. I could go on. But I hope you take up my challenge and learn for yourself of this good man for bad times. Duncan Hunter may not be Ronald Reagan; but he is the best candidate since Reagan.
I believe a Hunter-Palin ticket would be a winner.

The Republican Party needs to become the Conservative Party. All Rhinos need to take a backseat and I'm talking about phony Conservatives like Jack Kemp, Bill Bennett, etc. Phonies like these two sell out their principals for political correctness. At the risk of being repeatative here is my suggestion for the Conservatives in the Republican party:

1. Defeat all Rhinos in the primaries with true conservatives.
2. Elect conservatives who understand that survival in Washington does not include being liked by the MSM. Understand that they are there to vote for conservative values and that wasting time seeking the approval of the MSM is counterproductive. Stay off of the left wing news programs.
Adopt a new contract with America that would include:
A. Eliminating the departments of Education and Energy.
B. Reduce all government agencies by 20% except the military.
C. Overhaul the tax code and eliminate the IRS.
D. Overhaul our trade policies. Pull out of NAFTA and other one-sided trade agreements. Fair trade should be our policy.
E. Install a Realistic immigration policy that would include:
1. Prison time for CEO’s of companies hiring illegals.
2. Withdraw Federal funds from all sanctuary cities that harbor illegal aliens.
3. Stop the issuing of visas to anyone from any Middle Eastern country.
4. Cut off any and all aid to Mexico as long as it continues to subvert our border.
F. Pass term-limits for all of Congress. Six terms for the House and two terms for the Senate. Repeal the 17th amendment. Return the selection of Senators to the state legislators. Senators would then be free from fundraising 24/7 and could actually represent the people.
G. Invite the UN to leave the U. S. Cut the amount we contribute to this worthless organization.
H. Limit foreign aid to only those countries who are true allies of the U. S. Pouring money down U. S. hating third world countries should stop.
I. Bring home all our armed forces in Germany and South Korea.
J. Appoint Constitutional judges, who obey the Constitution, not make their own laws.
K. Install tort reform and reform our justice system.

butteblack
Wrong...
E. Kick the F..ken UN out of our country.

butteblack
The rest of it is spot on

Gabby
I agree, the Grand Poohbah of the Rockefellers, George Bush, has total contempt for conservatives. As he told the Democrats at their winter meeting, conservatives are a pain in the a_ss. They keep getting in the way of his liberal agenda. As to the radio talk show elites, I recall all of them reassuring us that it was OK to vote for Bush because he is nothing like his dad, that he was a true conservatives. And, conservatives fell for it. Conservatives won't be fooled again.

RINOS
RINOS are none other then socialist liberals. As a matter of fact, they are one in the same.

The Leftinistra (Armies of the socialist liberals) have completely taken control of the Democratic Party and much of the Republican Party...do your homework.

The only thing that can save this country is another Reagan. Period.

Any combo of Hunter, Gilmore, Huckabee, Thompson. Any other combo is a settle-for ticket for the sake of power; the welfare of the country be damned.

That is what we have had has SINCE Reagan...settle-fors.

As for Clinton...
He was another gutless wonder just like Carter and did nothing but trash the country. His wife will be worse.

Gipper?

No, we don't need a Gipper. We need a real Conservative, the Republican party needs an overhaul and the guys supposedly running it will not change business as usual.

I suspect they would give McCain the nomination no matter Fred Thomspon will have way more support. That would be the end of the GOP.

Perhaps then we can actually have a Constitutional party as a third choice?

Fred D. Thompson for President.

Liberalgoodman
In order to counter the Soviet Union threat, Reagan had to rebuild the military that was decimated by Jimmy Carter. In order to generate sufficient revenue for this task, he needed tax cuts to grow the economy. The Democrat-controlled Congress would only agree to the tax cuts if and only if they got massive pork spending programs in return. Reagan had to sign the bills into law, pork included, because in his mind the security of the nation is number one priority.

By contrast, Clinton did nothing for the security of the nation. Terrorists attacked us with impunity during his two terms, and he did nothing. The terrorists were busy planning for the big attack during those eight years, and we suffered the worst attack on US soil eight months after he left office.

Liberalgoodman, is that a record you are proud of?

There may be a reason........
Yes there may be a reason I have never seen Ms. Salena on Townhall before, it's because she is wrong.

Fred Thompson kicked buttocks in the LA Times (liberal rag)poll as well as Zogby and NewsMax. So he is not the answer to get Conservatives excited? Hmmm.

Hopefully your cooking skills are better than your political insights. Perhaps spending too much time in the Beltway and on liberal blogs?

Oops....
I forgot to mention the moronic out-of-touch liberal straw-man McCain. In a word......

Loser, and off his med's half the time.

Elections Not Won with Mouth
Salena, I just posted (click on Steve above) my first piece on Jason Altmire, "'BlueDog' or Lap Dog." Take a look at it. As you know, I also put up an extended response to this piece, which is also thought-provoking. I'm much more hopeful about the Republican situation than you are.

We need fewer of the "RINO" and "Rudy McRomney" commenters on here, basically people dissing their betters. No, we will not resurrect Reagan and run him again, but there are many good candidates out there, including the Big Three. Winning in politics is NOT dependent on shooting your mouth off and then doing nothing about the hard work of winning elections.

All the best.

Not quite sure what cooking has to do with my writing, but just for the record I am not a liberal, I worked for Reagan, Bush 41, Ridge, Santorum and Bush 43. I am on the board at the Heritage Foundation New Media.
If you would take the time to please re-read the sentance you are referring to about Fred Thompson, I never said he was a bad candidate, quite the contrary I find him interesting at the least, what I was poining out was that his candidacy was a fine point on the fact that there is is a greater problem within the party

Down to Only One Conservative Issue
Conservatives sure are fractured. Some believe the Iraq War to be the most vital front defending the United States from Muslim terrorists while others dismiss it as a strategic blunder. While virtually every conservative agrees Roe v. Wade is the most malignant Supreme Court decision, some think the federal government should regulate abortion while others believe it the province of states.

The only idea we stand on united on is the abstract notion of shrinking the federal government. I'll go out on a limb by saying I think that to most conservatives, this means that the federal government spends too much money. If this is the case, then there is only one policy we can have common cause on, we should promote, and is really the only cure for the bloated government. That policy is a return to the gold standard.

The federal government grows and continues to grow and continues to accumulate a massive debt simply because it prints the money. If everyone had a currency press in their house they could buy whatever they wanted because they'd always have the means to pay for it. Same for the federal government: it will always be able to pay its debts by printing more money. The gold standard would stop that immediately: restricting the amount of new money flushed into the economy to the amount of new gold extracted from the earth would literally stop the presses. Then the politicians would truly be accountable for the fiscal decisions they make: they would either have to raise taxes, for which they'd be immediately elected out of office, or they would have to drastically cut back on their spending. In the short-run inflation and interest rates may pose a problem, but in the long-run, social security, medicare, other welfare and pork will have to go.

Two candidates I otherwise have problems with are the only two I know of that have at least paid lip-service to sane monetary policy: Guiliani and Paul. But I'm convinced that the gold standard is the only issue, so those two are the only ones I'm prepared to vote for at this time.

Ideas & Solutions
Personally, I see Gingrich as the one capable of taking hold of the mantle. I don't agree with him precisel on every issue, but I agree with him to a very, very signifigant degree. I know his own personal failures, but I am not concerned with those... I am concerned with choosing the candidate that wishes to enable America to compete in the 21st century... and I am convinced Gingrich would excel quite sufficiently at that.

Guliani Tough enough to Defend US
I listened to the speeches in Iowa over the weekend. Gulliani is the only Republican who knows how to fight the War for preservation of the West. Al Qaeda has a twenty five year plan and we have a 25 hour plan. If we elect Gulliani
we have at least 8 years of someone willing to kill our enemies where they live. If we let the Dems get in, you all will be listening to call for prayers from the local mosque, while watching your children and grand children getting blown up at school or while shopping.

Bush has been as stupid as the Democrats said he would be. Gulliani is not stupid. Read his book on leadership. He knows how to manage the country. Now, he is weak on the border issue because he is pandering to the Hispanic vote. He is also pandering to the pro-choice vote. I think his calculation on this is wrong, but if real conservatives and libertarians will not support him, he has to go for support somewhere.

The best thing about Rudi is, he is a patriot. He doesn't really want to be President for the sake of being President. He doesn't need the job that ages people 20 years in 8. He already will go down in history as a great leader. It is time to put a great leader in the White House.

Stop
Stop with the Giuliani kudoes, he's a loser. Giuliani is only popular in the blue states, liberal tax-spending Hillary country, he's terribly weak in the red states he must carry. Fred Thompson is the only possible winner, he has the enthusiasm within the mainstream conservative Republicans, all Fred needs is a good running mate, like possibly Tancredo or Hunter.

Misapprehension of the signs of the time
Wrong, we already have another Ronald Reagan albeit a relatively inarticulate one.
Reagan (God Bless him) was a cold warrior of the WWII generation who understood the primacy of the danger facing the United States as the Soviet Union and understood the need to stand against it.
The Democrat didn’t then and don’t now as they continue to fight every initiative.

Today’s Reagan would be a slightly more articulate George W. Bush doing the same things that has made the Republican Party and W unpopular. It is the astounding level of invincible illogic, selfishness, ennui and ignorance on the part of a wide swath of the American People that is the greatest threat to this Republic. Challenging this pervasive stupidity is really beyond the ability of any one man in any office. It requires the same stalwart focus that Reagan and Bush have demonstrate.

The day is coming when W’s term will be recalled with nostalgia if any one of the amoral leftist non-entities in the Democratic field wins in 2008. We got bigger problems than one Man or the party can address and reversing the stultification of the majority of Americans is likly impossible.

The candidates on the Republican side aren't collecting money because We (Republican Donors) don't like the current crop.

Ron Paul, the Constitutionalist
Letters: Texas congressman stands against government excess

"Since the big government-loving socialistic Democrats and the big government-loving fascist Republicans are virtually identical, any presidential candidate who is an uncompromising defender of liberty and the Constitution is rare indeed.

Texas congressman Ron Paul is a unique politician with a backbone and principles. If there's a 430-1 vote in the House, it's Paul who stands alone. If he believes a bill violates the Constitution (as many do), Paul casts a "No" vote. This has earned the former obstetrician the nickname "Dr. No," as Paul routinely votes against wasteful government spending and pork barrel projects. This philosophy even extends to bills that would funnel cash to Paul's Houston-area district.

Paul is one of six Republicans who voted against the unconstitutional (as in not declared by Congress) Iraq war. Despite consistent opposition from collectivists in both parties, the congenial Paul maintains his principled stance in a city where statism is the official religion. While he is old enough to collect a fat congressional pension, Paul refuses to take a cent of taxpayer money for that purpose.

Attention, lovers of liberty, the overtaxed and overregulated. Ron Paul wants to reverse the march towards Orwellian government. Check out this modern-day Patrick Henry at ronpaul2008.com and on YouTube."

shubi
Giuliani is pro-open borders and anti-gun. This does not a conservative make.

Putting lipstick on a pig
After 6 years of govt control the American people have realized the GOP is nothing but lies. No matter who is the face of the party your ideas stink.

Patience
May I remind everyone that the Primaries are TEN months away! It is waaaaayy too early to start moaning about the lack of a viable candidate.
Historically, the best Presidents rose to prominence in the runups to the election just a couple months before the primaries.

Let's not panic yet, there's plenty of time. Just do what you think is right, canvass for your choice, and day by day a leader will emerge.

And she gets paid for this?
Nothing new here - just 620 words of regurgitation.

My only comment is - how quickly can you dismiss the Newts and Fred Thompsons of this world? Two lines? Rather than complain about the state of affairs, how about suggesting a solution?

Ms. Zito, try taking a look at a Krauthammer or a Novak column to learn how to add to the discourse through your writing.

Hope this helps.

Hunter Thompson
BTW, my choice is a Hunter-Thompson ticket.
Besides the virtues of those men, you could get a lot of burned out hippies voting for that ticket, thinking they're voting for the Gonzo journalist.

Liberty

You stole my thunder and I'm kind of glad for it. I'm getting sick of trying to convince my fellow "conservatives" that Ron Paul is our last hope to save this country. I'm a little baffled that a group with so much common sense still does not get it. Instead of clammoring for the only conservative candidate, they bicker about gay marriage, abortion and the phony balony "war on terror." Most people in this country are Libertarian at heart and if Ron Paul had a chance to debate the democrat candidate he'd wipe the floor with him/her. Keep up the good work Liberty, I can't do it anymore.

Every time the GOP calls me for $$$
They get an earful of how badly they're doing, and not one dime of my hard-earned bucks.

And so shall it continue, until things change dramatically.

RINO Rudy? No way in he11.

McCain? Lunatic, who wants to be Emperor, not President.

Romney? I don't know enough about him, but maybe.

Fred Thompson: Yes.

Recent GOP policies like Amnesty (Bush, Senate), No child behind, drugs for seniors, McCain-Feingold: These are GOP policies? Losers all.

And the GOP wonders why it's having a hard time raising money.

Well, duh! Take off the blinders.

CNN Poll
A new CNN poll is out basically Guiliani 27, McCain 24, Thompson 11, Romney 10, Gingrich 8 etc.

Without Gingrich it is Guiliani 30, McCain 24, Thompson 12, Romney 10.

If Guiliani keeps flip/floping on social issues he will gradually drift down (8 points from his peak in the overall averages so far).
McCain may be getting some help from the Surge (I want to see more polls).

Thompson may have leveled out in spite of a lot of hype (I want to see more polls).

Romney is not getting traction and probably won't until Thompson decides (Romney is up 3 in the poll average in the last quarter, about 1/2 of Thompson supporters list Romney as 2nd choice).

Droping Gingrich does not change much.

This is only one poll. Let us see if the above are confirmed by other polls.

Get over the Gipper
Until this party gets over the death of the Gipper and comes out of the past we will continue to be part of the past. I loved the Gipper. I cried for a solid week when he died. I met him twice. My uncle worked for him for eight years and remained friends with him until the day he died. The Gipper was a forward thinker that added a good dose of common sense reality, but he was reacting to the reality of the time. Now we have new realities and we need a strong, determined conservative who knows when to compromise and when not to. What is really needed the most is Gipper communication skills. He had a knack for getting people on his side. He could expose stupidity without humilating someone. Let the Gipper rest in peace. Learn from him, emulate him as best you can, but quit trying to fill his shoes. You will come up short every time. You will be disappointed every time.

P.S.
William Bennett is not now , nor has ever been a RINO. Your confusing civility with being a RINO. Big difference.

Redefining?
I don't agree that Republicans need to get into "redefining" ourselves as Selena Z. said. We just need to restate our ideas (read F.Hayak, Milton Friedman, R.Reagan) and elect those who act upon our tried and true visions of low taxes, strong defense, individual liberty and smaller government.

Libertarian at Heart
I am a card-carrying Libertarian. I joined the Libertarian Party (LP) because I do believe in smaller government (I think the days of the Gingrich-Clinton standoff, where only "essential personnel" were allowed to show up, were a good starting point), and I have a major problem with the agenda of the social conservatives in the Republican party.

I believe that a primary role of the federal government is to protect its citizens from foreign attack. That includes the invasion occuring over our southern border or via hijacked 767s. So, the "mainstream" Libertarians who have control of the LP, and who oppose hunting down and eliminating the terrorists in Iraq and elsewhere, and who oppose limiting access to the USA to law abiding immigrants, have forced me to consider the Republicans.

None of the current candidates makes my socks go up and down. I don't know enough about Thompson's positions to have a strong opinion. I think McCain is an Dole clone who thinks he has it coming to him because he's put his time in, despite the fact that he's been on the wrong side of just about every issue but the WOT for me. Guiliani and Romney do not appear to be fiscal conservatives, although Romney might be more fiscally conservative in an non-Kennedy environment.

So, the only Republican at the moment that does anything for me is Newt Gingrich. He is scary smart, he is on the right side of most of the issues (I could do without some of his socially conservative positions) and he makes the liberals apoplectic, which I think is a good thing.

I echo the comments of others who have expressed their wishes that the Republican party would limit its agenda to building a strong defense, cutting taxes, reducing spending, and the reducing the overall scope of government. I could get on board with that limited platform without hesitation.

Liberty, Devil, Ron Paul is an idiot
if he thinks the US or any country will go back to the "gold standard". It is a non-starter and only a lunatic would recommend such a self-destructive fiscal policy. While I do like some of his positions, this alone will put in the same category as Ross Perot. He too had many very good ideas, but was a lunatic is several crucial areas and the general perception of him was a lunatic not fit to be POTUS.

a different kind of president
What the Republican Party needs is not another Ronald Reagan, what it needs is to go into oblivion. The party has become just the other half of the two party power stranglehold put on America. Niether party seeks to serve the country, only to gain and hold power until the next election. If they really cared about our nation, they would have a selling message that could not be beaten anywhere. Go out on the campaign trail, and all you hear is the same old propaganda! I wouldn't vote for the Dems or the GOP. As a matter of fact, I am going to vote for myself, and I hope you will check out my website;
joeolivaforpresident.org

Right on dave stone!
Someone asked me who among the current crop would be the best to lead the country in these troubled times. I was, and am, completely stymied.

Rich

You're right of course. Imagine having money in your pocket that is actually worth something. Oh, the humanity!

Rich
Echoing DevilsPaintbrush, of course monetary stability is lunacy. It makes much more sense incessantly inflate away the public debt. I wish I could do that with my mortgage.

Galltegfa

Look up Newt's record on the second amendment and then tell me he is scary smart. To me the ultimate judge of a politicians character is their willingness to "allow" honest citizens the "privilage" to defend themselves. I'm sorry but Newt is just plain scary.

Liberalgoodman
is the kind of kool aid liberal that thinks Clinton walks on water.

The Bible talks about how, in the end times, there will be a man that everyone believes no matter what. As demonstrated in the "Left Behind" series, he ends up head of the UN, kills one of the delegates, and tells everyone that "he shot himself". They all nod in approval since the "fair haired boy" can do no wrong, even when he's killing people.

Clinton could do the same and still be perfect in the eyes of liberals.

If I actually remember correctly, Reagan raised taxes at first, cut spending, then started to cut taxes back down. In fact, I think Reagan's first year saw the biggest tax increase in history, if I'm not mistaken.

Clinton was able to ride the wave that Reagan created in the tech sector.

If I remember correctly also, Clinton's "surpluses" were projected, and they never accoutned for any increase in defense spending post 9/11.

Rich, please explain
how going back to the gold standard is a disastrous fiscal policy.

Thanks.

Newt and Gun Control
I believe Newt voted against the ban on assault weapons, so he's not totally anti-gun. What I've gleaned from his few comments is that he's personally not sure about allowing the average Joe to own military grade weapons. Now whether that's actually a pragmatic perspective, which I would expect from him, or sitting on the political fence, which I wouldn't expect from him, I can't say. Perhaps there's a little of both.

On a theoretical level I believe that every law abiding citizen has the right to defend himself as he sees fit. On a practical level, I don't think I want my next door neighbor keeping a large stock of high explosives in his basement, especially if they could take out a city block, or a nuclear divise, because the radiation might get a little hot. And I get a little itchy myself when I see a pickup truck full of deer hunters filling a cooler with beer first thing in the morning. So maybe Newt's letting his practical side temper a strict intepretation of the second amendment. Surely there are people in your world who the thought of having a loaded gun on makes you slightly uncomfortable.

And though I agree that the second amendment is an important issue, I put reducing taxes, reducing government spending, and reducing the scope of government as more pressing matters at this juncture.

2nd amendment the only guarantee
It's the single most important of them all, IMO.

Otherwise, what is the "court of last resort" for the American people?

SCOTUS?!?

Actually Newt voted against the assault weapons ban before he voted against it. In typical political maneuvering he placated both sides while accomplishing nothing. Brilliant! And all the sheep applauded.
I've read all Newt's "Civil War" books and believe me he knows full well what weapons our second amendment was designed to protect. The fact that he voted contrary to his beliefs, for the sake of politics, proves he is just another pandering politician and not worthy of our respect.
As to the high explosives, nuclear bomb argument that is just plain silly. And as an American I have no problem with anyone owning any firearm they want. All our gun laws were initially enacted to keep guns out of the hands of blacks and immigrants. Today we cannot defend ourselves and consequently maniacs can shoot up schools without fear.
The second amendment is my litmus test and any politician that ever violated it can go to he11.

Boy this pundit shows the problem!
John McNobrain has never been a shoein for anything other then leftist weekly. He should be kicked out of the party for being a democrat, but then should 20 others!
