Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The country witnessed a level of political engagement last week that we haven’t seen in decades. Thousands of Americans turned out in cities across the country to demonstrate their frustration and dissatisfaction with the current tax and spend policies of both political parties.

The estimated 2000 tea parties that blanketed the nation on Tax Day were more than a protest of the $180 billion economic stimulus package passed last spring. They were more than a response to the $345 billion housing bailout passed last summer. And they were more than a reaction to the reckless $787 billion “Recovery and Reinvestment Plan” Congress rushed through and President Obama signed this past winter.

This surge of public disapproval and, yes, anger, was a response to the fiscal incompetence at all levels of government, from local to state to federal. In the face of serious and debilitating budget shortfalls, states like California are raising taxes by the billions.

One of the largest protests took place in Sacramento, CA, where taxpayers came out to condemn the $13 billion tax hike the state legislature and Governor Schwarzenegger passed in February and to march against Proposition 1A, which Californians will vote on in May and would extend these tax increases for two years.

And it should be no surprise that New Yorkers also took to the streets. In fact, a recent Wall Street Journal editorial noted, “Like the old competition to have the world's tallest building, New York can't resist having the nation's highest taxes.” Albany’s push to be number one will mean that those in the top tax bracket in New York City will pay more than 12.6 percent – two points higher than even California.

Other states are joining the trend: Arizona, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin have all proposed tax increases.

Certainly the fear of an increasing tax burden was motivation enough for many protesters. But it’s not simply the ballooning budgets and obscene tax hikes that drove thousands in every state – both red and blue – to demonstrate against their government.

Americans were responding to the way an ever-expanding government threatens the country’s most basic values of virtue and liberty.

The original 1773 Boston Tea Party was held by colonists who had grown wary of the increasing centralization of British power that threatened their self-government and freedom.

Today we’re seeing a similar reaction to an increasingly out of control, distant, and arrogant federal monstrosity. Not only are we witnessing a dramatic increase in the size of government, but we are also seeing a fundamental transformation in the relationship between government, corporations, and citizens.

Just as importantly, there seems to be a shift in the way we think about responsibility. Government now rewards failure and punishes success, by bailing out mismanaged businesses, schools, and states, and even private citizens who have imprudently taken on more debt than they can afford. Americans are tired of it.

While the country is facing difficult economic times, the bottom line is more spending, higher taxes, and bigger government are not the answers to our economic woes.

If Washington – and Sacramento and Albany – want to encourage economic productivity they ought to support policies that encourage work, saving, and investment. They should permanently reduce taxes on savings and investments, lower corporate tax rates, and execute long-term entitlement reform.

Doing this might require a bit more creativity on the part of government. But no one said change would be easy.

It took eight years, the war in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, and a bad economy for President Bush’s approval ratings to bottom out and Congressional Republicans to be decimated. So it would be foolish to think one day of protests will have any immediate effect on President Obama’s poll numbers or the behavior of our legislators.

It’s not just the first months of the Obama Presidency that led normal citizens, many of whom have never before participated in a political protest, to join the tea parties. It was also a result of lingering frustration with Republican leaders, who oversaw their own spending binge and launched the bailouts in the sad last days of the Bush Administration.

It’s not about political party or ideology. It’s about freedom and responsibility. They are powerful concepts and the commitment Americans showed to those principles is potentially very powerful politically.

The Boston Tea Party was perhaps the pivotal event that led the colonists down the road to revolution and ultimately independence. Leaders in both parties ought to take this week’s tea parties very seriously.

Their jobs could depend on it.

Like the Addict or Alchoholic...
....that has to hit bottom to come to his senses, seeing the agenda the leftists have been drooling to enact in action has brought people face to face with leftist ideology.

Oh, is THIS what they meant by hope n' change? Oh, is THIS what they've been advocating in the universities for the last 40 years? Who knew?

Kinda like a Catholic going to a Baptist church for the first time. Who knew this is what they REALLY believe?

Ordinary Americans look at BO's leftist juggernaut and are saying: What the heck? This is not America.

Will enough come to their senses and stop the lefist rampage? I guess we're about to find out.

A Nation of Beggars
Many years ago this nation was a large, prosperous, wealthy, peaceful nation. The people worked hard and achieved comfortable livings and they were proud of their accomplishments. Then politicians began systematically looting the nation's treasury for their own personal wealth and power. They began stealing money from the productive and handing it over to the nonproductive, they began subsidizing other nations. The politicians dreamed up every possible way to get their hands on more money. They have succeeded now in bankrupting the country. This nation that was once proud and productive in on its knees begging other governments for loans and the citizens have been robbed of their money by failing systems by politicians that absolutely refuse to stop spending. In addition, the taxpayers who have provided the largess for so many are accused of stinking, terrorism, and being bitter by the very same thugs that have been stealing from them. The GD bastar** in Washington have turned the American people into beggars. These rats should be horse-whipped out the country.

WE HAVE TO KEEP THIS GOING
We had 4,000 at our Tea Party in Salem, Oregon and there were many people who drove by on their lunch hour to honk their horns and give us a "thumbs up" in support. We have momentum and have to keep it going in order to make a lasting impression on the no-so-bright dingbats in Congress. They should not underestimate the seeting anger that is prevalent in this country today. These people are motivated and don't like what is happening to the country.

SUSAN BOYLE AND BARACK OBAMA
How does the 47 year old Susan Boyle differ from the 47 year old Barack Obama? Click ApolloSpeaks for the answer.

Peggy
You're exactly right. This grassroots movement will fizzle out and come to nothing without leadership. We must sustain and escalate the rhetoric. Obama and his leftist clique are unfazed so far. In fact, they're snickering at us. We need an even larger and more vocal demonstration on July 4th.

America Back On The Right Road?

Not yet. But it's a start.

The Tea Party Concept: A chance for America to get back to being America.

The left-wing, liberal in the White House jump started this new movement by ignoring tax payers, going on a spending spree (shear madness) and pushing America to socialism.

Obama lit the fire.

America is finally waking up!

I attended in NJ
In New Brunswick, where NJ gubernatorial hopeful Steve Lonegan spoke. There were perhaps 1,500 people present- and most were older; you know, the ones who know what we have here in America, therefore what we are losing. The crowd was neat and orderly, and the event went completely uncovered by the media, save NJ 101.5 radio- an excellent station here in Jersey.

Poster Joel- De O L has ot right- all non-Constitutional gov't powers must be stripped. The way gov't funds are allocated and budgeted inherently excludes any meaningful change. Its called a "cut" when a program's budget isn't increased, and failed programs are simply renamed or offered under a different division, but will be categorized as "eliminated". Government is designed to get only larger, and there is no way we can sustain the beast that has been created.

See You on July 4th,
I've never been one to go to rallies, I'm a letter-writer. But I went to my first political event on the 15th and I'll see you all -- everyone who is fed up with big government and special interests taking money from our pockets -- on July 4th.

The Constitution is not a Suggestion!

Next TEA Party protest?
Yes, I went to the closest one on April 15 (held in the early evening so as to get as many people out as possible--since most of the protesters WORK and pay taxes!)
The problem with simply sitting back now and planning to do it again on July 4--is that we CAN'T wait until July 4!!
LOOK what BO has managed to decimate in less than 100 days!! We can't wait another 3 months to see what he wrecks, what obscene bills he signs, what awful people he manages to find crawling out of the woodwork for his Cabinet posts!
We HAVE to get him and his thieving Cabinet OUT! Please, if you value your liberty and your country--DEMAND that SCOTUS actually HEAR a few of the "natural-born citizen" suits--not just dismiss them with no comment based on false matters.
SCOTUS does not want to actually hear any of them--because it would be forced to interpret Constitutional Law against the FACTS shown them. They can't MAKE laws--they would have to decide, based on what the Constitution says--if he is eligible to be President.
Since he is NOT--they would be forced to write their opinions, which go down in history as prescedents--as to why.
BO, his whole thieving cabinet, and all the bills he's signed into law would be out the window.
We could start over and have a REAL election--based on the lessons we've learned over these 90 days, and our American way of thinking. (which has finally kicked in).
We the People want our life, liberty, and the God-given right to pursue happines BACK.

Approval ratings
Obama's Approval ratings remain high. Yes, the country is angry, but unlike the 10% who attended the Rallys or support their ideas, most Americans are willing to give Obama a shot.

Yes, people are angry. In fact everyone is angry, but only a small fringe are angry for the same reasons as the people promoting these tea parties.

Russ from MI
"We need an even larger and more vocal demonstration on July 4th."
Great idea. Call it "Independence Day from Bureaucracy".

Time is critical
Gradually Americans are waking up to the cesspool our politicians have created. The collapse of our currency and bankruptcy are just around the corner. The irresponsible spending by this administration is at unimaginable levels, causing many to notice.

Political slugs continue to blame our fiscal situation on the failure of free markets. While the truth remains that our fiscal problems are the direct result of government's excessive spending and government's meddling in private affairs.

This new administration has bamboozled many into believing they have the answers and can be trusted. For the first time in this countries history, government (a failed government at that) is making decisions for banks, auto manufacturers, credit card companies and others. They promise to enact new standards on energy and environmental issues, though nobody can show factual correlation between co2 levels and perceived global warming.

Indeed the inmates have taken over the institution and threaten this countries survival. If you love freedom, independence and self determination you are appalled. If you believe as Obama, that he knows best how you should live your life, rollover and continue sleeping. When you do finally wakeup, your reality may well be a nightmare!

The United States of America, the greatest success story in the history of mankind, is on the verge of collapse. Truthfully, it may be too late to stop, especially considering the current direction of this administration. But if we do nothing, then we become as responsible as Barney Franks, Chris Dodd, Barack Obama and the many other lying cheats that brought us here.

These Tea Parties are perhaps too little too late. The stakes are extremely high. Civil chaos will follow a failed currency. If we are to save our society, we must save our currency!

Tea Party
Our party was in a small rural area and still drew around 1500 - 2000 people. I think the numbers they're talking are way low. I'll be at the next one and the one after that until these people in DC get it. Things can and will change if people want them to, remember it is "We the People". Good luck to everyone in these tough times.

Whats next??
I know that there was more people at these partys that has been reported, and one has to figure that for every person who did attened there was at least 2-3 who wanted to be there but couln't make it, also how many people didn't know one was being held that would have came???
The question at the beginning of the artical is whats next?? IF things do not change for the better and fast history will repeat its self. And perhaps it should..
I shall never ever bend my knee to any government.. and I will not allow my children to be forced into public servituded..

Decentralized Message = Confusion ?
I have heard it said that your greatest strength is often your greatest weakness (especially if one gets cocky). With the tea parties, the decentralized, largely-spontaneous reponse of the American people is a phenomenal strength. However, it also leads to a defused, confused, decentralized message. We are starting to see liberals and the mainstream media (but I repeat myself) try to discredit the tea parties by distorting or pigeon-holing the MESSAGE. Perhaps the movement needs to do a beter job of presenting what is multi-part message is. Even though the movement is decentralized, it might help avoid us being caricatured if we could present an explanation of our message better.

The Best Sign At The Party
My brother says that he saw the best sign at the Atlanta Tea Party. It said, "we didn't bring our guns THIS time!"

It was interesting to hear commentators from both CNN & NBC say that it was a protest against the Obama administration AND CNN and NBC. So, they are finally admitting their bias. The question is, how long before it all comes to a head.

While we sit and worry about Congress and the White House, I would like to know if Soros may have been the whole cause of our economic downturn. Would it have been possible for him to cause the oil speculation to happen, and keep it going for the whole period, before then selling short to bring about the collapse? Isn't he credited with bringing down the Bank of England?

If so, perhaps bringing back the practice of tar and feathing naked men and riding them out of town on a rail might be appropriate except we could just go one step further and ride him out of the country.

JonMoseley
We are mis-caricatured no matter what we do. The media is owned. Truth has no value.

Wrong--Dead Wrong
Quote:It’s not about political party or ideology. It’s about freedom and responsibility."

I listen to you and many posters on this site and they have no clue what freedom is. You argue the same old two party system politics that got us into this problem.

You hit the streets and will do little, just like the hippies of old. Your more concerned about your paycheck then about principles.

Freedom comes with a price. The price to stand alone, at best with the few that understand freedom is not about discusssion. But about my right given to me by my Creator that no government or individual can impose on me.

Most of you probably have never just walked out of the door of an employer based on principle. You sought another job before leaving and if you could not find. You justified why you could stay. Phoney at best.

They join the committed, but will disappear when the heat comes. I will stand and ask you to search your heart if your principled or just another ideologist like most Politicians that claim principle and go their merry way of negotiating votes or what is best for ME>

The Next Step
Our local group was astonished at the numbers of Americans who joined our event on the 15th, and the equally large numbers who signaled their support.
This has brought us together, not only on our own local level, but partnering with other counties around us to put together a viable plan of action for the future. One that will include addressing the city, state and national spending situations that are equally out of control.
Our main focus is to be more engaged and address these situations in a way that leaves no question in the politican's minds that we are not going away.Secondly to create other gatherings to bring more Americans into the movement and dissemenate information that the MSM is propagandizing for those now in power.
It will not happen overnight, but beleive me, people are mad and are joining together to bring this nation back to its Constitutional principals, and the morals that once made this nation the greatest nation on the earth.
So just get involved, your future and your childrens and grandchildrens future depends on your fighting for our Rights and Freedoms, or just sit back and watch America become France.
"It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless, minority, keen on setting brushfires in the minds of men" Sam Adams

Reform, rebellion, or revolution!
And the answer is, in order of my hopes are: Reform, Rebellion, or Revolution!

INDEPENDENCE DAY

.....JULY 4TH falls on a Saturday ...

.....This gives citizens who are fed up with Federal tyranny a couple of months to plan and execute a massive demonstration that will overpower the MSM attempts to obfuscate and distort the message of the TEA Parties ...

.....The theme on the 4TH should be Independence Parties ...Independence from Federal Government tyranny .....COLOSSUS

Next Steps
There is a compelling next theme for the tea parties: Throw Out Every Incumbent
That will get the attention of the Beltway...even if the Pravda media refuse to cover it.

Did y'all really take off your guns to go to the TEA Party?

I'm hoping Texas passes Open Carry, I'm tired of wearing jackets in this heat.

I attended a Belmar, NJ, tea party
3-400 braved the hail and some sleet of a spring northeaster to trudge the boardwalk of Belmar, NJ; people with Ironworkers and NEA (National Ed. Assoc.) on their coats, college kids with Dunkin Donut cuops, and at least one 71-yr.-old who said she had never demonstrated anywhere at any time before.

I'm going to one in Manasquan, NJ, the 4th of July, as my state is squandering my pension in bad investments (derivatives) and is proposing investing in toxic assets (losing billions hasn't been good enough) by Gov. Jon Corzine, an ex-master of the universe from Goldman Sachs.

My son wants to leave working in NYC for the rotten commuter and city taxes. Dems. have never seen a buck they didn't think needed higher taxation.

And as for fixing infrastructure, where were these Dem. Sens. and gov's when they had chances to fix our infrastructure? They were caving in to union demands, funding criminal orgs. like ACORN, and ignoring hard-working people trying to make successes of their lives.

Not for this thread, but pirate story
for real.

From a former sailor, my cousin:Philips’ first leap into the warm, dark water of the Indian Ocean hadn’t worked out as well. With the Bainbridge in range and a rescue by his country’s Navy possible, Philips threw himself off of his lifeboat prison, enabling Navy shooters onboard the destroyer a clear shot at his captors — and none was taken.

The guidance from National Command Authority — the President of the United States, Barack Obama — had been clear: a peaceful solution was the only acceptable outcome to this standoff unless the hostage’s life was in clear, extreme danger.

The next day, a small Navy boat approaching the floating raft was fired on by the Somali pirates — and again no fire was returned and no pirates killed. This was again due to the cautious stance assumed by Navy personnel thanks to the combination of a lack of clear guidance from Washington and a mandate from the commander in chief’s staff not to act until Obama, a man with no background of dealing with such issues and no track record of decisiveness, decided that any outcome other than a “peaceful solution” would be acceptable.

After taking fire from the Somali kidnappers again Saturday night, the on scene commander decided he’d had enough.

Keeping his authority to act in the case of a clear and present danger to the hostage’s life and having heard nothing from Washington since yet another request to mount a rescue operation had been denied the day before, the Navy officer — unnamed in all media reports to date — decided the AK47 one captor had leveled at Philips’ back was a threat to the hostage’s life and ordered the Naval Special Warfare Command team to take their shots.

Three rounds downrange later, all three brigands became enemy KIA and Philips was safe.

More pirates
Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday, I asked why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:

1. Obama wouldn't authorize the Naval Special Warfare Command SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours, going against Onsite Commander (on scene commander) recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, Obama imposed restrictions on their Rules of Engagement that they couldn't do anything unless the hostage's life was in "imminent" danger
3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the pirates all sighted in, but could not fire due to Rules of Engagement restriction.
4. When the navy Rubber Inflatable Boat came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to Rules of Engagement restrictions. As the pirates were shooting at the Rubber Inflatable Boat, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.
5. Obama specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge Captain and SEAL teams.
6. The Bainbridge Captain and SEAL team Commander finally decide they have the Operations Area and Onsite Commander authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead pirates.
7. Obama immediately claims credit for his "daring and decisive" behavior. As usual with him, it's BS.

If You Read The JMO51 Post
@ 8.m. carefully, you'll detect a note of fear.
......................................................................

That's the key. It's the power of the Tea Party Movement. Rush Limbaugh/Talk Radio and Bill O. and Glenn Beck of FOX NEWS bother liberals tremendously. But a grassroots movement is different. The Tea Party concept is real. It has support. Above all, it's a concept the Obama/Soros/Carville Gang fears. Why? One reason. It could kick them out of power.

Whats next?
Now is the time for you to support your state or push your state to claim State Sovereignty! Like so many others, it is the State that gives power to the feds, not the feds to the state. Our Constitution has been trampled, our freedoms threatened, Now we push for reform!

tea parties vs his popularity
so flap ears hasn't heard about the tea parties.

But I bet the fraud in chief knows the numbers of every poll in the universe that rates his popularity.

But like the clinton's he feels the need for daily polling just to reassure him self he has the undying love of every leftist on trolls on planet.

But it seems he lacks the descipline to address any problem and there is no telling what will occupy is limited mentality next week.

He has screwed up the economy with almost unlimited new spending, and spent the last couple weeks assuring the euros and the tinpot dictators running central and south american countries americans are really not nice people but are far too arrogant for their own good.

But looking at the latest pictures of kim jong mentally ill, the messiah had better travel to n. korea soon or he will miss the chance to trash america with dear leader before he checks out for his dirt nap

Dislike Democrat Talk
When Hillary Clinton ran against Barak Obama she reiterated the theme, "Let's take our country back." That has overtones of dictatorship of the democratic party and when you consider that ACORN pretty much put Obama in office you have the makings of a correction which the tea parties were a first step. Cap and Trade will bankrupt industry and cause pain for every American. This is endemic socialism of the most radical kind. Obama wants to install computer controls on the electric grid so that they can calculate carbon taxes and levy that against the power company's and those who fuel our capitalist economy. Obama's brand of politics has within it power to regulate everything and burden the economy with suffocating taxes. This will all be follow up to the financial disaster we have encountered last fall and this winter. His trillion dollar bail outs will extend pain onto future generations.

Ms Schaeffer
Best column I've seen on the tea partys. When the GOP understands that it is conservitive ideas they need to embrace, they will get the votes they need to win.
Kirk

A waste of time
I'll be very surprised if the tea parties are anything more than a passing fad. At best, they allow people to commiserate and vent, but don't expect anything to come from them. Those in office are not about to change their ways simply because a few thousand people share a vague anxiety about the poor fiscal state of our nation. We need a leader with the vision to tell us that unless we get our act together and do without some things, we headed for a fiscal calamity.

TEA Parties Require Two Part Solution
TEA Party participants, to be effective, need to continue their activities on two levels. First to continue organizing and communicating their conservative values throughout their communities. This will likely include huge local and national events on July 4th.
Second, and possibly more importantly they need to seek local elective office. In our constitutional democratic-republic system of government, the only real way to effect positive change is by being elected a representative. For too long conservatives have ceded local elected positions to liberal democrats. They in turn are all too happy to groom those local officials for higher office and help them win. It is time to end this liberal treadmill and elect conservatives to everything from Dog Catcher to County Commissioner.

Baseballdoc
You are spot on. This July 4 we need to come out an protest even louder. If we don't do it, then we have no one to blame but ourselves. This is about Liberty vs tyrany, constitutional gov vs an a powerful gov.. This July lets send a even bigger message.
Kirk

A poncho
Please try reading the sign again, it reads "Impeach the BELTWAY pirates". Your silly atempt to imply a race issue is dumb and rude.
Kirk

The power of words...
JMO51 said "most Americans are willing to give Obama a shot."
John in LA heard "we didn't bring our guns THIS time!"
Paul from Ks said " Throw Out Every Incumbent"

I say: stay mellow, write your representatives, stay connected, call your local MSM and tell them you aren't listening/watching.Write letters to the editor and keep your powder dry.

P.S. The part about the naked guy on the stick is something to not talk about. Do not talk.

leave
Forget the tea parties. Time for Texas and other states to secede from this godless United Cesspool from hell and forge a new destiny.

jeffjen
The numbers for the tea partys nation wide, are between 450,000 and 500,000. That is more then a few thousand. If more turn out on 7-4-09, it will wake up the pols. I don't care about dems, I want to take back the gop from the libs in it.
Kirk

The
tea parties should extend to smaller Cities & Towns. The broader it is the more effect it will have.

Maybe next time the tea bagger graduates from CNN, etc. will see fit to treat American Constitutionalists better and not violently assail them in their ugly and rude manner.

Passing fad?
The tea parties were about a reorganization of thought. To downplay the significance of the tea parties is to downplay the historical significant of any burgeoning philosophical movement.

To want perfect coherent thought in such a movement is not only impossible, but undesirable. Philosophical debate takes time. Real movements take time and that is good thing. It is easy for shallow movements to be coherent at the begin because there is no depth to them (anti war protest).

Also, there was not only talk and protest there were call list being accumulated and debate for what was next at these parties.

I don't think this is the end of this.

Can the crazy liberals on this site stop saying this is a Republican movement. It's thoughtless. There was a reason why most of the Washingtonian Republicans kept their mouths shut and it wasn't because they were hoping this would hurt Obama. They are worried more than the Democrats are rightly so.

Political Actions
Have you already forgotten the election of 2008?

Funny Stuff
I am not downplaying the significance of the Tea Parties. Any broad movement like this is significant. But you would all do well to curb your enthusiasm just a bit.

For example, the author writes the we haven't seen this much civic engagment in decades. Oh really? Any recent elections come to mind? Any protests against the Iraq War. etc. etc.

This was a significant event, and may become a significant movement. But until it shows some legs, be more realistic.

Tea Parties: The Beginning!
The Tea Party in Phoenix was a success, around 5000 participants, some decent speakers, and plenty of right on signs and loud exhortations like: NO NEW TAXES!, NO BAILOUTS!, and THROW THE BUMS OUT! I got there an hour and half early and there was already about 500 people there. I wore my DPMS Arms cap and there were many pro-second-amendment people in the crowd. One guy had a sign that said "Impeach Obama" and I went by I said to him, "Yeah, and send him back to Kenya". A good time was had by all.

We must take our country back and not by donating money to causes that squander it and that may not truly represent their purported and often conflicted goals but by everyday citizens being involved and shaking things up. Taking money out of politics is one big first step. Term limits for elected office and pay-for-performance is a must. Also the benefits attached to any office should be on par with main-street and not politicians voting their own long list of privileged and elitist benefits on the taxpayers’ dime. This will get their attention. Vote the bums out and demand reform as above!

I’m quite familiar with Western European socialistic governments. They are big, cumbersome, inflexible, onerous as all get out to the point of oppression, and VERY unresponsive to the needs of its people except for what is deemed “good enough for the masses”.

Maybe
What we need to do, as far as the Tea Party movement goes, is put our own candidates up for the 2010 election.

Imagine if we put up candidates up for Congress in every state, and we were able to get a sizeable number of candidates into Congress.

If we could get enough into office, we could strongly challenge the democrats and sweep aside the weak, gutless, and ineffectual republicans.

Next we need...
1)A zillion man/woman taxpayer march on DC this summer.
2)A multi thousand man/woman taxpayer march on every city hall, board of left wing indoctrination (board of “education”) when they are in the budget proposal stage. We must demand cuts in spending across the board, especially for the outrageous compensation for public parasite teachers, cops, etc.
3)If just 10% of property owners would not pay their property taxes we would bring the crooked, corrupt, cowardly politicians to their knees. They can’t throw 10% of the population out in the streets for not paying taxes.

texas tea party
our small town had 300 people show up the day before to protest the spending. It shocked everyone

John PA
the author writes the we haven't seen this much civic engagment (sic) in decades. Oh really? Any recent elections come to mind? Any protests against the Iraq War. etc. etc. John

============================

You could also say civic engagement came in 2000/2004. I recall 2004 being a massive surprise to the left.

The difference is:

Liberals normally protest; by nature they react to collective thought.

Conservative do not protest; by nature they think individually.

It was a surprise to both parties to see conservative who normally think and live very independently gather so massively with similar grips.

Perhaps the Tea Party message wasn't crystal clear because conservatives have many issues with government and, don't have a lot of experience at relaying them at protests. I know it was my first protest, I'm sure others as well.

BTW - one has to wonder how many people didn't come or had to work - that agree with the basic Tea Party message? I sure know the truckers agree -- our Tea party on a highway, exhilarating - yet deafening - from truck horns.

Jo

Yer dreaming?

"Liberals normally protest; by nature they react to collective thought.

Conservative do not protest; by nature they think individually."

People, of any political stripe, rarely think ndividually. Your kind of "liberals bad: conservatives good" posturing is juvenile. AS I said, any kind of broad effort like this is meaningful. However, whether it is significant depends on what happens going forward.

Red and Blue
In my car we were red and blue on the way to Columbus, Ohio Tax Day Tea Party. Both parties have and are letting us down in a leviathan way.

I heard a Fair Tax speaker at the event. I did research and I am convinced this is one piece of legislation that we have to get passed. The red and blue in my car that day have agreed on this issue.

Shrinking the federal government and getting it to STOP outrageous spending is the second part, in our opinions, to repair our severely ailing economy.

Lucy

texas tea party
our small town had 300 people show up the day before to protest the spending. It shocked everyone Lucy

========================

Congrats! I live in a small working town where many wanted to go but couldn't because of work - yet 500 still showed up.

What The Average Citizen Can Do
1. Send out periodic e-mails, phone calls, letters, etc. to your local and state representatives expressing your concerns and ideas. You can also send these to the media. Don't be afraid to call them out on their bias.

2. Keep participating in these blogs! Start your own site, thread, etc. Help build the movement on the net. I truly believe this is where O's biggest advantage came from during the election.

3. State your case. Talk to relatives, friends, neighbors, and other acquaintances about the direction of our country. Let them know what will happen if we don't change course.

4. Participate in or help to organize a local tea party rally. Invite speakers to talk about fiscal responsibility, etc. Be careful to remain non-partisan. There are plenty of independents and blue dog democrats who have valid concerns as well.

5. Involve the youth! Lead by example and teach fiscal responsibility and conservative values whenever and whereever you can.

6. Volunteer to help out a local or state candidate whom you support in his/her bid for office.

7. Condider running for office yourself. This country needs impassioned, intelligent, responsible conversative leadership!

numbers of attendees
Not only were there 4,000 to 7,000 in Col. Ohio, the honking cars driving by with drivers and passengers giving us thumbs up tells us that our numbers are huge!

Brown Pirate?
It looks like Pancho @9:19 needs glasses. As I read the sign in the photo accompanying the article, it reads "Impeach the Beltway Pirates" -- pretty much the sentiment I found at the tea party in Santa Ana, CA. We're in this mess as a result of mismanagement, arrogance, stupididty, cowardice, and pandering by both Republicrats and Democans. We really need a reset button for Congress.

Observations
I attended the local event here and was struck by the absolute randomness of the attendees. Every demographic was represented to include various minorities.
Having read through the posts thus far, what I would say is significant and starkly different about this movement (and yes, movement is the correct term), is that it cuts across all the supposedly divisive societal lines.
Make no mistake, this is not about race, this is not about labels such as left or right or democrat or republican. This is even about class. This is about how completely upside down our political system has become. It doesn't matter who occupies the white house or the halls of congress. They all need to be made to realize that elected officials work for the people. The sooner we get back to that principle, the better we and the nation we love, will be.
We need to keep the momentum going and simply get involved in the process. I have heard it many times, but it still rings true; "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." It is time for each of us to take personal responsibility and do what we can to effect the change we want.

John - PA
People, of any political stripe, rarely think ndividually (sic). Your kind of "liberals bad: conservatives good" posturing is juvenile. John

===============================

What's juvenile is not acknowledging the differences of the two parties. Liberals LIKE collectivism and conservatives do not. Do you deny this?

BTW - I didn't say either party was good or bad -- you took it that way. Which is telling.

Just curious do you deny that liberals publicly protest more often than conservatives?

What's Next?

Well, if history is any indication, what you'll do next is keep pretending these protests were more widespread and diverse than they were, keep chanting the same failed anachronistic faith-based mantras, rant about ACORN, Ayers, and Wright some more, and scream conspiracy at every turn, particularly when you get your butts handed to you in 2010.

Next Steps ...

The event we attended 15 April in OKC was very gratifying. There were a variety of messages that document government over-reach, over-spending, over-taxation, over-regulation. Every last person I saw there was uniformly peaceful, polite, and of good cheer - all share outrage and an aversion to the palpable change in the relationship between The People and the federal government.

We should not be surprised at the diversity of messages. Elected officials and bureaucrats are so busy encroaching upon our freedom in so many areas it seems like playing "Whack-a-Mole" just to keep up. And each of us sees a different facet of all this activity.

What's next? Success in changing the trajectory requires -

[1] Persistence .. never give up
[2] We must clearly assess the totality of the grievances so we can name, personalize, and isolate the root of our grievance, so we can propagate an unambiguous, easily understood message
[3] Focus on what unites us (see [2]), lest we fall prey to factionalism
[4] We must make our case as widely and persuasively as possible
[5] We must be vigilant to further government over-reach

There is much more that needs to be said on the topic, but I am most concerned about [2] and [3] at this point.

v/r,

-- Bud

Dream on
The most that can come of the tea parties is that maybe a few incumbents will lose their seats in Congress. I suppose that may be satsifying to some, but it ain't going to amount to a hill of beans when it comes to putting America on a better course.

For those who still believe in the tooth fairy, Obama says he will bring the deficit down to $533 billion by the end of his term. After that, the CBO projects it will rise again and reach $1 trillion by 2018.

Maybe some of the tea party enthusiasts on this board can tell us just what it is we need to do to prevent this from happening. Since everyone is against paying taxes to finance the things they expect from government, whose ox are you going to gore so we can start to get our spending under control?

This is where the rubber meets the road, and as far I can tell, the tea party attendees have yet to smell the coffee.

Jo
Of course there are party differences.

However, one of them is NOT that one group thinks individually and the other does not. There are indivually oriented liberals and conservatives and there are group-think liberals and conservatives.

DOn't be simplistic.

Or...

You could get a grip and realize that the anti-evolution, anti-birth control, anti-stem cell research, anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-raising-taxes-to-pay-for-your-spending (notice a trend here?), position is a political loser and will continue to be one as time goes on, however right you might think you are. You might recognize that it is hypocritical to chant "US, the home of the free, get the government out of our lives" while supporting a drug war that has us harboring 25% of the world's prisoners, along with all the other laws limiting personal behavior.

You might revamp the GOP into a science-respecting, financially responsible (no more borrowing and spending), militarily responsible (no more wars based on speculation), socially tolerant party which follows the lead of Jesus in bringing about social change, not via laws forcing people to behave, but by the example of walking in His footsteps.

I know, its a crazy thought, but I can dream can't I?

re: More TEA anyone???
Look, I really was excited to be at the TEA party I went to and I heard some good people from just the community speak on the way this gov. has become one of tyranny and Taxation oppression!!! What really boils my blood and makes really resent this present group of clowns that are in office is the way we were called "UNHEALTHY" and "RADICAL EXTREMISTS" yOU know this is what is an example of someone who does not have one clue on the way Americans really feel about the way Glowbama and his cronies are working in this country to tear it appart, and if you think that they won't stop-think agin!!!

Tea Parties: What's Next?

The answer to the question is simple.....

The "Walk on Washington" Tea Party slated for July 4, 2009.......

THe Next Step!

"Walk on Washington" is fine.

But we need political fire power, too.

ASK THESE QUESTIONS OF YOUR U.S. SENATORS AND YOUR U.S. CONGRESSMAN/CONGRESSWOMAN.

1. Do you support the Tea Parties? YES OR NO?

2. Will you stand with us at the next Tea Party? YES OR NO?

3. Will you take our message to the congress and the senate BEFORE AND AFTER the Tea Party? YES OR NO?
..........................................................................

The true affect of this thing has not yet been felt.

We're off to a good start and..........

We've Only Just Begun!

You're Busted!
The following was reported by a local radio station. After a person in my area,(sorry their name wasn't reported) attended a tea party, and might have been seen on TV. The person was mailed a delightful unsigned note on West Allis Police Department official stationary. (West Allis, WI, a suburb of Milwaukee). The scribbled note said: "
"What kind of ("word begins with an "A""), are you? "You blame people that have not been in office 100 days yet." "Blame the real one's -> G. Bush and the Republican Party." "8 years to (should be too) long.

Supposedly the W.A.P.D. is "looking into it".

It seems that DHS report regarding "right wing"....er ah...extremists is being taken seriously by law enforcement!

Keep it up...
...but we need to do more to beat the dems at the polls. The answer is not to be more like them but to refine our message. A message stressing individual liberty can resonate with a larger percentage of the population and help to turn traditionally democratic voters. See more ideas on what we need to do here:

We
definitely have to keep the momentum going.
Don't make the mistake thinking they didn't hear or listen..they heard..why else would Janet NappolitRENO (on the orders of the magic messiah) issue that fatwa against all
patriotic Americans, calling us 'Right Wing Extremists' including our Veterans. The fact they mentioned Christians who believe in the Second Coming of Christ makes this even more egregious, because I would say the majority of the folks they labeled do have Christian
faith..you know first they will come for those of us who are evangelical, Full Gospel Bible Clinging believers; then they will come for
Christians whose doctrine is of various shades of our orthodox belief; then they will go after everyone else. They will label anyone who has an honest, biblical disagreement with their core
values that enable them to call evil good and good evil..be it homosexual marriage, abortion
or whatever other immorality God refers to as SIN in scripture. This is literally a battle for the soul of this nation, between good and evil.

What is
needed is to list the acceptable things like following the constitution.
And a list of things that absolutely will not be tolerated any longer.

Following that, we need designated leaders.
Country wide,State wide and local.

Jeff
I would hope that person is considering a law suit.

Politicians, Unions, and Taxpayers
Raising taxes is an offset to mismanagement. No tax should be raised to support any government function until the function in question has been thoroughly audited and all waste, fraud, and abuse eliminated from the function. Additionally, any function needing new dollars should be prepared to: 1. Cut its work force by 15%. 2. Eliminate all Union involvement. and 3. Submit to yearly audits until all vestiges of mismanagement have been certified as removed. In a Republic government employees work for the People, they are paid by the People, they are answerable to the People; therefore, labor Unions have no business interjecting themselves between the People and the worker. Eliminate Unions from government.

In my life I have tied yellow ribbons around trees, worn MIA/POW bracelets, stuck yellow ribbons on my car, voted in every election, mailed tea bags to the President, attended political rallies, served 2 years in war, spent 26 years in the Army during which I was forward deployed for 6 years in the Fulda Gap to provide first resistance to a Communist strike. My government is now totally controlled by Left Wing radicals, my President huddles with Communist practitioners at every available opportunity, our MSM is nothing more than a Communist mouth piece, our culture is in shock, our economy is a mess, and the opposition Party is totally impotent. My effort has been wasted, my service squandered, and the future of this once great country is so heavily mortgaged it probably will not survive. Symbolism is a fool's attempt to demonstrate bravery from a safe distance. It does nothing.

Science Avenger
You made a list of assumed truths about conservatism and called it a "trend". As a social worker, I can attest that most of our gov't funded interventions for various social problems do FAR more harm than good, as evidenced by the exponential increase in the scope and severity of social problems over the past three decades. In addition, I have found without exception that it is ALWAYS the personal value system along with support outside of gov't programs that truly helps people make changes. Helping people AVOID many "services" is often to their great advantage- and yet people like you seem to think we need more of that which destroys lives, families, communities, and ultimately all of society.

Your list of "anti" this and that is a littany of truncated assumptions that attest to the non-critical nature of your thinking and certainly absence of practical experience.

Don't be such a Debbie Downer here at townhall. We the people have only just begun to fight. Those in Washington who believe this is a passing fad are going to get the shock of their lives come election day. We are sick and tired of being robbed every year and our money used as bribe money to get people to vote the way the congressmen and women want them to vote. Maybe we were slow in finally getting awakened to the horrible path Washington insiders are taking us down, but we aren't stupid and lazy like many who voted for some of these politicians. We don't want politicians in Washington any longer, we want patriots and those who are fiscally responsible. Those who are there now have no idea what being fiscally responsible is. Throw all the incumbunts out should be our rally cry.

We Pennsylvania Real Conservatives are already moving to "Primary " and take down The Perennial RINO Senator Arlen Specter with Former Congressman Pat Toomey, who just stood down as The President of The Club For growth to take down Specter .

The Quinnipiac Polling has Registered Republicans supporting Pat Toomey 41 Percent to Specter 27 Percent even before Toomey announced at The Philadelphia Tea Party .

We,take Down The Socialist incrementally.

Start now ,to Primary out RINO Republicans with Real Conservative Candidates for 2010.

This way,we Walk The Walk and Not just Talk The Talk.

I'd call the U.S. Attny.
Tea Party,

If it was I that received that letter, I'd be on the phone with the U.S. Attny. right away.
I don't know if it was actually an officer that wrote it, and as one of those "Christian pro-life right wing extremist", I usually support law enforcement. But even if someone had stolen letterhead paper, I'd consider it a serious breech of security worth more than just, "looking into it".

Here's something simple and effective...
April 20th is "Read the Constitution Day". To commemorate the occasion, we're asking every one of you to Print and Mail a copy of the US Constitution to those that need it most: our elected and selected representatives in Federal government! Just follow the four simple steps shown here: http://unite4liberty.net/instructions2.htm

Tea Party Poo-Poo'ers, now hear this...
Obummer said he never even heard of the Tea Parties and has no idea what went on. Talk about arrogant insolence. Well, to paraphrase W after the 9/11 attacks, he's gonna hear from us. THE WHOLE WORLD is gonna hear from us. I was at the Tea Party in Chicago, and this was not a fluke. What shall we do next? There's only one thing: March to Washington. MLK did it and was effective. During Viet Nam, we did it. And this is big enough to do it again. A revolution is brewing...

Johns denial
John says:
Of course there are party differences.

However, one of them is NOT that one group thinks individually and the other does not...
=============================

The parties *differences* are quite striking. Let's make it simple for you John.

As a *majority* --

Do you agree the left is collective?

Do you agree the right is independent?

Tea Party
I am sorry to say that I did not participate in our local TEA party. I feel I let my fellow Americans and myself down by not being there. It wasn't about taxes for me, it is about responsibility. How can we expect our children to be financially responsible when our leaders aren't? How can I teach my Son to stand up for his rights when I missed a prime chance to be heard ?
The "powers that be" keep talking about do overs with different nations we have had relations with in the past. How about a do over in Washington? Can we Impeach them all? Who is in power that a simple majority in America actually believes in? They used to say "don't trust anyone over 30" Now we could say "don't trust anyone of the three branches of government!"
IMPEACH THEM ALL.
