Reuters Admits Faking Photos, Still in Denial

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

This weekend was not a good one for Reuters.

First, it was revealed by Charles Johnson of the Little Green Footballs blog that a photo showing bomb damage in Beirut by a local Muslim stringer, Adnan Hajj, was doctored. Reuters promptly recalled the image and fired the reporter.

Since the original unaltered photo revealed that there really was a large explosion being documented by Hajj, Reuters accepted his excuse that the picture was only altered to "remove some dust marks".

Accusations that the photo was “sexed-up” to make Israeli damage of Beirut seem worse were dismissed. The photo was treated as an isolated incident by Reuters. It wasn't.

Prompted by Charles Johnson's expose, a reader led me to another Reuters photo taken by Adnan Hajj. The photo purported to be of an Israeli F-16 firing "missiles" at a Lebanese village.

That photo was also a fake. The original photo actually showed an Israeli plane firing a defensive flare. The flare had been labeled a "missile" by the reporter and then duplicated several times using computer software to make it seem that multiple "missiles" were being "fired" on a Lebanese "village".

In other words, the F-16 which Reuters purports to show firing missiles at a Lebanese village, was taking defensive measures.

This time the "dust marks" excuse could not fly.

When confronted by a second obvious forgery, Reuters was forced to retract all 920 photos produced by Hajj.

But Reuters is still in denial about several things.

First, Reuters retraction order makes it seem as if the second photo was discovered by an internal investigation. An internal discovery of a second faked photo makes it appear that Reuters is a responsible and objective news organization which takes seriously accusations of impropriety. It is not.

Second, and more importantly, Reuters is in denial that there is an overtly anti-Israeli bias in its reports and their accompanying photos.

Why is it that no one at Reuters caught these two obvious forgeries? It doesn't seem too far fetched to suggest that editors do not scrutinize closely those things that they already believe to be true about Israel. The photos showed what Reuters already knew-- namely, that it is Israel that is responsible for so much death and damage in the present Middle East conflict.

Which is why Reuters is still in denial about many other photos which are not outright forgeries, but which appear to be staged?

Such as photos of Korans burning. Such as the bodies of children being paraded before reporters for hours.

What Reuters and others in the mainstream media do not disclose about all of their photos from Southern Lebanon is that no reporter is allowed in the area without Hezbollah approval. Even worse, many of the photos of Israeli "atrocities" are actually taken at organized tours put on by Hezbollah.

The images are real, but the photos are neither spontaneous nor do they tell the entire story.

Without the two forgeries it would be tempting to characterize the reporters at these staged events as victims of Hezbollah censorship. With the forgeries, it is now clear that many of these reporters are participants in a Hezbollah propaganda campaign against Israel.

Without the forgeries it would be hard to swallow the notion that the local Arab reporters employed by the larger news organizations were neutral and unbiased in this war. With the forgeries, it is clear that at least some are actually combatants and partisans on the propaganda front.

Reuters won't see this. Reuters can't see this. To the editors at Reuters, Israel is the cause of the miserable condition innocent Lebanese civilians find themselves in. Photos showing what they already believe to be true will not be scrutinized.

We seldom question that which we already believe.

So, while Reuters is frantically implementing new procedures meant to separate forged photos from authentic ones, do not expect to see much change in the content of those photos. We will still see the bodies of children. We will still see captions blaming Israeli aggression for their deaths.

Reuters does not need a new editorial process. What Reuters needs is moral clarity. Given their track record, don't hold your breath that it will come any time soon.

A picture is worth a thousand words
And so we see Reuters becoming a willing propoganda arm of Hezbollah. Useful idiots indeed...

I wish I could be surprised...
I wish I could feel at least some element of surprise at Reuters' unethical practices, but I don't. I doubt I would be surprised at any biased and unjust acts perpetrated by the media. Every time I recall that, while in college, I considered journalism as a career, I feel a surge of gratitude that I was persuaded to follow another direction. A once-honorable profession has now become a joke and an object of scorn........and deservedly so. Today's journalists trample on sensitivies and shove aside compassion in order to get to a story. Major newspapers divulge secrets and write stories that border on treason. News stations are so blatantly biased that they offer only news stories that further their own agendas. Freedom of the press has been bent and twisted and so grossly abused that it no longer resembles the inalienable right intended by the Constitution. I am deeply ashamed of our media. They have contributed much to our unfavorable image in foreign countries. They have helped to create dissent and division among the American people. Their desire to further the cause of liberalism has robbed them of any sense of loyalty to their own nation....even during time of war.

shout it to the world!!
keep up the good work, town hall!! i just pasted this link onto several leftist blog sites where bullying pseudo-intellectuals try to pound down anyone who disagrees with them in their self-righteous loathing of the state of israel (yahoo.com.au)...not much to say when you see the proof

Any idiot can do it better
And they don't even do it well! Most Grade 8 boys can do a better job of Photoshopping than these inept Reuters "journalists" do; I have seen some excellent posters mocking the Sea King helicopters and a nice travel poster of Israel showing the Pyramids where Amon-Ra would be surprised to see them, both much more believable than either of those Reuters photos.

And then there's the photo in which the "dead man" is seen sitting up under his "shroud" ...

For 60 years the MSM/DNC has been fabricating "fake but accurate" news. They have always favored the enemies of America and American values; be they Commies or Muslims. They will continue to do so until they no longer have any customers - which is not that far off it seems looking at the drop in the 2 big Times (NYT,LAT) customers.

Is Rusty Shackleford really Dale Gribble
Just a little King of the Hill humor :-)

Seriously though, it should come as no surprise that a news organization that refuses to even use the word terrorist to describe, well, terrorists would have doctored photos to smear Israel. We can see clearly that Reuters has taken a side, and we know which side it has taken!

Alana
Right on! But, your conclusion somewhat misses the fundamental point:

"Their desire to further the cause of liberalism has robbed them of any sense of loyalty to their own nation....even during time of war."

Quite right, and yet their real problem is that liberalism robs them of loyalty to truth, without which all is allusion or delusion. Truth is the value without which no nation or individual can survive. It's objective - wishes and lies do not change it. Someone mentioned semantics in another context, how the misuse of words leads minds astray. One of those misuses is the phrase "true facts." Facts are true, end of subject. True facts is redundant, and leads some to suppose that some facts are true, some are not.

I read recently somewhere that we are the "oldest continuing democracy." At first I was offended, for we are a Democratic Republic, not a democracy, and that's an important distinction, which few seem to adequately grasp. The writer a few sentences later used "Democratic Republic," still, calling ourselves a democracy might tend to confuse some, and we all need to not only understand but respect the wisdom our founders exercised in creating for us this governmental touchstone difference.

It's significant that we often read what an "infant nation we are." This is intended, I suppose, to increase our reverence, respect for opinions of older nations, regardless of their standard of living conditions and many other political/economic failures? But, we're not an infant nation! We have succeeded thus far in going where no other nation has dared to travel. The tragedy of media is that they hate the trip of this "one nation under God," and are therefore willing to lie, cheat, pervert reality, in their endeavor to set up roadblocks.

In an old Cary Grant movie, "The Bishop's Wife," he spoke the line, "Angels rush in where fools fear to tread," a clever reversal of the original quote, "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread." This nation is representative of Mr. Grant's line, and the original quote of media, other journalists, and "revisionist historians." "How stands the Union?" I pray in fact, this nation and its people stand far better than reality denying liberals would have us believe!

Reuters-Excellence in Anti-Semitism
This is yet another example of the liberal/anti-jew media placing all the blame on Israel, regardless of how they have to accomplish it. :(

The "doctored" photos
To Dee, Right on ! I wish I knew how to paste good quotes or actual artcles to Leftists' Blog Sites :-(. P.S. Kudos to Celtic-Dragon's comments also!. I read most all remarks when I can.(Time constraints).Thank God for some enlightened souls. I only can hope( and, yes pray) that we will prevail among such "bullying pseudo-intellectuals ". Oh, p.s. I live in Georgia, but am a transplant from the Northeast, and am happy to report that the 4th District woke up enough to defeat Ms. McKinney.

Facts?
Both "Jude" and "Alana" have it right.

Truth and facts are both victims of the liberal media. I have discontinued several news magazines as their obvious leanings are away from truth and facts.

Now, I feel I get more news and better opinions from Townhall. Even in this site, I sometimes disagree but here, I at least have the opportunity to agree, disagree or criticize, and add my own comments. It makes one feel they do have a voice that can be heard.

Fake Photos
Obviously, Reuters deserves the Dan Rather award for journalistic excellence. Fake memos or fake photos, it is the underlying truth that counts.

bennyboy - copy/paste
FYI, it is easy. Find the article or qoute you would like to copy and paste. Put your cursor at the top and hi-lite all you want to copy. Then hold the Ctrl button down and hit the C key, that's it, you have copied it. Now open the site and window in which you want to paste. Put your cursor where you want it to go and hold the Ctrl button down and hit the V key. Your article or quote will appear. Then you can trim it or edit it as you want.
I use this all the time in discussions with lefties. It drives them crazy when you pull quotes out of their own comments and destroy them with your rebuttal.

Propoganda???
Without commentary from the revered Marvin Kalb or the highly esteemed Dan Rather, how may we be so sure?

Oh for the days of three networks and the alternative government network (PBS) when bias, slant, and tilt still had their dignity.

Does anyone line birdcages with newspaper anymore? It is cheaper than paper towels but more difficult to determine when it is time to change.

GEM

You don't say
Yes Captain Renault, I too am shocked, shocked that there is gambling going on at Rick’s. Did you know that my sources in Arlen Texas report you as having died of a childhood illness in 1957?

New Journalism Mantra:
"If it Bleeds; it Leads. If it doesn't bleed there's always photoshop."

In case you just missed it...
In case you guys all missed it, the AP has also been caught red handed faking photos. Check out The Drudge Report for the link.

It is truly disgusting that there is anyone who even tries to make the argument that the MSM is NOT biased to the left. And not just slightly tilting to the left, but Left-Of-Lenin wackjob left.

Here in the good ol' CommonTheft of Taxachusetts, we suffer through the NYT affiliate, the Boston Glob (sic), which is so overtly dishonest, they've since simply stopped trying to hide it. They've been caught in so many blatent lies, one wonders whether dishonesty is a job requirement. My favorite was a "news" story from about a year ago where they reported that one of the Boston City councilmen (another wacko loony toon leftist liar) "discovered" more evidence of abuse at Abu Ghurayb prison. He held a press conference where he displayed what appeared to be photos of US Marines raping Iraqi women, and, as usual, the Boston Glob (sic) ate it up, printing that as fact.

It turns out that the photos were taken from an internet porn site, and depicted porn stars, not marines or Iraqi prisoners. So not only did the Glob (sic) print graphically pornographic images in their paper (in and of itself reprehensable), but they also blatently LIED about what they depicted for the sole purpose of making our troops look like monsters.

The Glob (sic) later printed a "retraction", but they did NOT come out and say the article was nothing but a collection of lies. They skipped over that important fact, and only apologized for the hard-core pornography they printed in the paper.

Like always, they blamed it on a "mistake", but any careful observer would notice that practically EVERY "mistake" made by the "oh-so-unbiased" MSM seems to take the shape of making the political right seem as horrible as possible. Such "mistakes" doing the same to the left never occur because mistake or not, they simply won't print them. How many people knew, for example, that Nancy Pelosi was involved in a scandal to bribe her fellow congressmen for their votes in favor of her being named Minority Leader, and that after the investigation, she was fined $25,000 for the illegal activity? Why did that not appear in the Glob (sic) or the NYT? Why did Ms. Dowd and "Dr." Krugman not spend 200,000 words condemning such activity? Instead they focus on condemning people like "Scooter" Libby and Vice President Dick Cheney for something that even THEY have argued was not only not a crime, but wasn't even wrong.

And how can the Times KNOWINGLY print classified information, which they KNOW will aid the enemy on their front page? Seriously, if Abreham Lincoln were president, Bill Keller and "Pinch" Sulzberger would have been summarily hung from the neck until dead, and any member of SCOTUS who bemoaned such swift and merciless action would have been tossed in jail -- WITHOUT a trial.

It is a truly sad state of affairs when the only "reliable" news is "news" printed for the sole purpose of helping maniacle monster murder more innocent children. Sadder still is that they are being allowed to get away with it.

Faked pics
Breaking news!
Reuters hires Dan Rather to defend photos!!!

This is not credible
If the second photo was not discovered by an independent investigation, who discovered it? Surely not this Shackleford character, despite what he is careful to insinuate. Where is the evidence that photos of Korans burning and bodies being paraded before media are "staged"? Where is the evidence that media can't enter Lebanon without Hezbollah permission? Where is the evidence that Reuters does not have the integrity of its profession? I see quite the opposite. I see a news outlet which, in order not to take any chances, promptly fired Mr. Hajj, analyzed nearly 1000 of his photographs, found only one more to have been doctored, but dumped the lot of them, just to be sure. If you want to talk about sexing up a story, let's talk about the way conservative commentators repeatedly show a tendency to rely on cheap speculation and inference to make all situations seem much more clear-cut, moralistic, and entertaining.

Bloody billboards
Dead women and children are Islamic billboards.

As mightily as Israel tries to avoid civilian casualties, Hezbollah tries even more mightily to cause them. The posing and parading of dead babies before cameras -- whose deaths are often staged by Hezbollah -- should tell us something about the death-worshiping Islamists and the journalists who serve as their propagandists. Each thrust of a lifeless body toward the lens reveals a celebration of death. It is a very ugly truth, and one we should not ignore.

Journalists should cover the events, but not be part of Hezbollah's sick ad campaign. Those dead-baby billboards are written in blood.

Hell, Malou...
Where's the evidence that the sun's gonna rise in the east tomorrow?

Use your head.

You must be a noob. Charles Johnson and his lizardoid minions are not the only people who have been tracking the works of al-Reuters for years. Just google "al Reuters" and you'll find plenty of what we're talking about.
