Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

SAN DIEGO -- Mexican President Vicente Fox recently raised eyebrows north of the border when he said that Mexicans ought to be grateful for their heritage and asked them to imagine what life would be like had they been born in -- gasp -- the United States.

Well, for one thing, they'd have a much shorter commute to work.

No doubt about it. Fox has the gift of gaffe. He compared a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border to ``the Berlin Wall,'' boasted that Mexican immigrants in the U.S. are ``doing jobs that not even blacks want to do,'' called border enforcement measures ``disgraceful and shameful,'' and characterized the Minuteman Project as a bunch of ``migrant-hunting'' vigilantes.

OK, so maybe he got that last one right. But you get the point.

At first, Fox's rugged spirit seemed a refreshing change from the stuffed shirts of the corrupt Institutional Revolutionary Party, which controlled the presidency for 71 years before it was ousted by Fox's National Action Party in 2000. Fox also praised Mexican immigrants in the United States as ``heroes'' for their contributions to the Mexican economy -- more than $20 billion in remittances sent to Mexico this year alone.

Then the cowboy became an aristocrat. Suddenly, he was arrogant, meddlesome and boorish. These are serious times in the relationship between the United States and Mexico, and you'd like to think that the president of Mexico -- a country of 110 million people -- would be a serious fellow with serious thoughts.

If that's the case, and at this point I have my doubts, you wouldn't know it from Fox's comments suggesting Mexicans are lucky to have been born in Mexico rather than the United States.

The first thing that hits you is the absolute ridiculousness of the statement. Imagine a leader saying something like that in a country where, according to one recent survey, as much as 40 percent of the population would migrate to the U.S. if they could. Who's Fox kidding? In that scenario, the lucky ones are those with enough money to pay smugglers to buy passage to the United States, where workers can make more in a day than they make in a month back home.

Not that Mexico is a total bust. It works fine for some of its people. Perhaps Fox should have tacked on a qualifier, something to clarify that only some Mexicans are lucky. The wealthy, well-educated, politically connected, fair-skinned English-speaking Mexicans are the lucky ones. As they sit in their country clubs sipping fine tequila, they speak adoringly of Mexico and all that it has provided them.

It's the others -- the poor, uneducated, dark-skinned members of the working class -- who have to flee to the United States to feed their families. Those are the only Mexicans that most Americans will ever see, waiting tables and trimming hedges and waiting on street corners for day-labor jobs -- hired, perhaps, by some of the same people who decry illegal immigration.

Many Americans look down on that brand of Mexican, and they probably never think about the fact that, across the border, there's another kind of Mexican -- educated, refined and privileged -- who actually looks down on Americans. After all, the only Americans many of them will ever know are the rude tourists who come down to Cancun or Mazatlan and drink themselves sick, walk into restaurants with their shirts off, and demand that waiters speak to them in English.

These Mexican elites are the constituency Fox was addressing with his brutish remarks, and that's why the incident has largely been treated as a non-story south of the border. As far as the Mexican upper crust is concerned, Fox was just stating an indisputable fact.

The way they see it, why would anyone want to be born in the United States when they could be born in Mexico?

I don't get it. But, I guess, as a Mexican-American, I'm not supposed to. My loyalty lies with this country -- the United States -- where you're not locked into whatever station you're born into and where, despite the nonsense that populist doomsayers peddle to the struggling middle class, there's unlimited opportunity to better oneself.

That sure beats the modus operandi in the country that my Mexican grandfather called home as a boy until his family, for economic reasons, had no choice but to emigrate to America -- legally.

I'm grateful for his ordeal. It allowed me to be born in the United States, and, you know, one doesn't get any luckier than that.

I see
"characterized the Minuteman Project as a bunch of ``migrant-hunting'' vigilantes.

OK, so maybe he got that last one right."

This guy is getting tiresome beyond belief.

Once again, I'm voting one dinky check mark on the column rating. Maybe soon, TH will get the hint and drop this turkey.

Come on.
I read this man's column in the Fresno Bee, which is a mouthpiece for the left, and I accept that he is one of their proponents of illegal immigration. But should he be here? Absolutely not.

Alright
I'll tolerate that last comment about the Minutemen, Navarrette, since I don't look down on vigilantes or migrant-hunting. Any worse than that and I'll cut off my monthly contribution to your salary.

Naverette
Vote this bum out. One Check.

Or don't vote at all.
Anyway, shouldn't Big Rube be out doing the Snoopy dance right now? I mean, the open borders party has the House, strong support in the Senate, and an open borders elite in the White House....what could be better for him?

Elitism is a two way street
And the Republican leadership treats its people with a similar disregard.

The American people don't want the immigration compromise that the elite in leadership want for the country. Well the republicans might learn that they are in their position to represent not to dictate. Might!

lighten up- Townhall isn't kos
Hey, lighten up. We can handle a little diversity here. Read the full article, get to know some Mexican Americans and work for a true solution to the immigration issue other than isolation.

THAT'S A GOOD ONE RUBIN
Thanks for the first laugh of the day, something much needed after reading the results of last nights election.

"SAN DIEGO -- Mexican President Vicente Fox recently raised eyebrows north of the border when he said that Mexicans ought to be grateful for their heritage and asked them to imagine what life would be like had they been born in -- gasp -- the United States.

Well, for one thing, they'd have a much shorter commute to work."

That's OK, the American Militia and Minute Men wouldn't have to travel as far either when they felt the need for target practice.

Good on Reuben!
Fox and the rest of the Mexican intelligensia are truly a bunch of terminally chauvinist, tiresome bores. Mexicans who by birth don't fall into that magic circle head north to better their lives and feed their families.

The Mexican intelligensia is the problem for Mexico, not Mexicans per se.

Lame Article again...
I welcome lib articles here. If only they could back up their articles with real facts and offer constructive ways to get thigns done and why those things need to be done.

Pointing out his Minuteman Project comment, these guys are simply protesters. They are not hunting down people for sport or executing anyone. They are simply protesters trying to bring attention to a very serious issue.

Hntr admin
MS-13 makes the American Militia and the Minutemen look like choir boys. They better pick their targets carefully. The last counts show MS being 180,000 strong. Oh boy.

J

jcdean
You really need to get yourself down to the remote areas of the border where many of the Minutemen operate and see what is happening before you label them as simple protestors. I agree with you that it is a serious issue, but it needs to be handled the right way. Starting at the very top.

J

Skip
You really should get out and see for yourself what is truly happening down there, I have. Then you can come back and offer some insight. Right now you just sound like a bitter person who don't know much about anything.

If a minuteman in your town were to go up to some kids smoking pot in the park and ask them to get down on there stomach at gunpoint until the authorities showed up, what would happen to him?? Of course you live in Montana, so your answer might not surprise most.

J

The Minutemen are heros
Protection of this country has fallen to civilians when it comes to our southern border. The Minutemen are only doing what Bush should be doing. Instead he signs for a fence that may or may not ever get funded.

Fox is a Mexican elitist who is woefully ignorant of the American (USA) culture. He is a loser to the tenth degree and unshamefully admits that he and his upper crust Mexican buddies need the pennies earned by their dark skinned, uneducated, illegal "brothers" who entered the USA via shadows and deceit. Now, that's a real arrogant and ignorant paperhead for you.

SECURE THE BORDER NOW!

SLW
plaasjaapie writes: “Mexicans who by birth don't fall into that magic circle head north to better their lives and feed their families.”

But, plaasjaapie, this over-the-top sugar-coating. In reality, a substantial number of Mexicans come here not to feed their families, but rather to get the American taxpayer to feed their families. Their US born offspring are entitled to generous food stamp benefits, their children in school will get free or reduced priced meals, and there’s plenty of outright welfare fraud enabling adults here illegally to get in on the goodies too.

But, it doesn’t stop there. Mexicans also come here to get American taxpayers to educate their children. The property taxes on the dwellings they rent or own come nowhere near covering the cost of educating multiple children, many of whom will require additional expenditures over native, English-speaking students. This problem is only compounded when they squeeze two or three “families” into a single-family dwelling.

And, it goes on. Mexicans come here to get the American taxpayers to pay for their medical care as well. By court mandate, they cannot be denied necessary care, and the definition of “necessary” can be very fluid. With no documentation which can be used to track them down, hospitals can expect to collect nothing from them for the care provided. And, they know this quite well, and happily take advantage of the situation.

The resentment of illegals would not be anywhere near as great as it is, if, as you suggest, they were feeding their families and taking care of their own. The reality is they are becoming a major drain on taxpayer funded resources by virtue of the fact that they cannot/will not take care of their own. They can send $20 billion/yr back to Mexico. They can afford to buy top-of-the-line pickups and SUV’s. But, food, schooling and medical expenses – well, those are the gringo’s responsibility.

Mexico may be a hell-hole, and I can sympathize with the plight of her people. However, I must draw the line at being asked to pick up the tab for their excesses. There is no “human right” to other peoples money so that you can have a half-dozen children and feel like a real man.

Mexico
I hear a constant refrain refering to Mexican crimaliens as "hard working, law abiding wonderful people".

I never heard anyone espouse the idea that if these creme de le creme people were to stay home, they could could put their esteemed energy and willingness to work for the betterment of Mexico. Why does Vicente et al want these super citizens to leave the meso-American workers paradise? Doesn't he want them to unleash their pent up power and energy to improve their native soil?

Consider the roots of the current scam!

Fox
Isn't Fox just a Mexican Kerry?

Just Shut Up.......Cayte la Boca!
Another crappy article by a true hack, posing as a respectable journalist.
One check mark for mediocrity and irrelevance.

We know who you are, Ruben. Do not think us so stupid, that you can appease us with churlish drivel.

Jake,
I asked you to give an example of something the Minute Men were doing in the remote areas of the border that justified Navarrette's slur. I said that many people will not be able to go there. That means that I won't be able to come back and offer any insights, doesn't it?

You then ask me about a Minute Man coming up to some kids in the park smoking pot, putting them on the ground and holding them for the authorities. You want to know what would happen to that man. Beats me. they might give him a medal for keeping the park clean.

I think the kids here usually drive up one of these mountain trails to smoke pot. You get locked up for smoking in the park. I guess the kids here go up in the mountains to smoke Yeah! I guess we are a little behind the times. I also guess you wouldn't like it here. There is a solution though. Stay home! Don't come here.

Then you say that I sound like a bitter person who doesn't know much about anything. Your next insult is that since I live in Montana my answer might not surprise most. What the devil are you talking about?

I'm "a bitter person who doesn't know much about anything"? I thought the subject here was Ruben Navarrette's insult of the Minute Men. Just what exactly did I say that causes you to claim that I don't know much about ANYTHING?

You then pose a hypothetical question about kids smoking pot in a park and being forced to get on the ground and wait for authorities. Did that happen in some remote area? Were some pot smoking kids treated that way by a Minute Man? If so, why not just say that? Could it be that if you did you might have to give enough information to document that alleged incident?

Or, do I give you too much credit? Perhaps you are not smart enough to anticipate being asked for documentation. Speaking of documentation, are your documents in order?

As far as my answer not surprising "most" since I live in Montana, you have apparently decided what my answer would be, based on my Montana residence. OK! What would my response, or the response of anyone living here be?

When I said that your comments were typical, you have confirmed that they are. Typical of a fairly ignorant leftist who is unable to do anything beyond insulting people in an incoherent manner. What do you think you know about Montana? You don't make that clear, but you are insulting at the same time.

You sound like an ill mannered child, so go stand in the corner. Repeat one thousand times, "I will not embarrass myself again making ridiculous, incoherent posts on Town Hall ever again. Or at least until I get out of middle school".

P.S. Were you one of those kids caught smoking pot? Had you guys just jumped the border and fired up a J to celebrate? If that's what happened, I guess I can understand your being miffed. If you were one of the kids, stay in the corner after you complete your first punishment, and repeat one thousand times, "I will never smoke pot and butt into a conversation adults are having on Town Hall again". Can you remember the assignment? Can you remember anything?

Illegals
So enforce the laws on the books or modify or remove those laws. Drop alternative language accomodations. In the meantime, enact legislation permitting seizure of assets of those employing illegals (even as nannies) and see the illegal labor market dry up.

Bait and switch
Why is the minutemen comment any less ridiculous than the rest? For those of you who agreed with it, you probably agree with the others as well. So by what logic does he base his decision to arbitrarily single that one out? Its not like its factually correct. Look up “hunting” and “vigilante” in the dictionary. The minutemen meet neither of those labels.
I would respect him much more if he would just come out of the closet as a total open borders wacko. At least they are somewhat consistent. But instead, he tries to bait us with opinions that sound sensible, then throws in something like this. I think is goal is to keep both sides fired up, without anything actually being solved. Because when it does, he’ll be out of a job. His last name gives him certain credibility on the immigration issue that allows his employer to overlook his consistently weak arguments and lack of logic. It won’t fly if he tries to take on any other issues.
About the American tourists, I don’t defend the rude drunkenness, but I don’t see what’s wrong with them expecting waiters, bellhops and others in the hospitality industry speaking English. If it wasn’t for us English speaking American tourists, there would be a tourist industry in Mexico to employ these people.

Mexican Nationalist
President Fox shouldn't worry too much...before long Speaker Pelossi will have all Illegals legal and everyone will live happily ever after!

correction
The last sentence of my above post should've read:

If it wasn’t for us English speaking American tourists, there would NOT be a tourist industry in Mexico to employ these people.

Hmmm
Unembarrassed Believer - I guess you're wrong, apparently TH *is* supposed to be a kind of conservative kos. Ronald Reagan would be proud.

I disagree with Ruben on immigration, and several other things, but I also think that he has a good analysis and is an interesting writer. And he's quite right on the situation and attitude of the Mexican upper class, which is a prime exacerbation of Mexico's internal problems - which then become our problems.

And, Dios mio, people, if you're going to criticize en espanol, can you at least spell it right? Or else callese su boca, por favor.

Get Rid Of This Doofus Now, Please
Having this dork's columns here just shows why the Republican Party just got its rear end handed to them. Moderation gets you NOWHERE in politics.

Town Hall has Bush apologists all over, and now this liberal wussy boy?

No wonder the Right's becoming irrelevant to the populace.

Poor Vicente Fox
Too bad for both countries that Mexico doesn’t have it act together. Due to corruption, drugs, and violence Mexico languishes while a Communist dictatorship in China changes policy [“It is good to be rich.”], and several ‘Shanghais’ sprout – a huge country growing at 10% a year.

If Mexico grew at that rate, they would be complaining about immigrants from the U.S. taking ‘good Mexican jobs’ instead of obnoxious tourists. Then consider all the snow-bird retirees and their Social Security checks the country would attract.

Snotty Rueben
American tourists "drink themselves sick"??
Listen Rueben,my illegal alien next door neighbors(12 men packed in a 3 bedroom home) put any tourist to shame in that department. In the warm months, they fight and pass out on our front lawn. They leave us to pick up their beer bottles. They drive drunk. The cops do nothing.
If you live in a glass casa,Rueben, you should't throw stones.

Ruben Navarrette`s Article tuesday
Yes, I read it today due to many problems with yahoo yesterday. His comments about the minutemen are unfortunate at best. You guys know him better than I do. This is my first read that I recall. He could have skipped the part about the drunk or uncouth tourists which while a minority are certainly present.

However, the general and somewhat specific gist of the article as concerning things "in Mexico" was rather accurate.

I concur, however, that the border needs some dutiful attention. We cannot simply go on and on receiving immigration indefinitely, especially when it's illegal.

I know that a lot of blacks are unhappy about losing work they would otherwise do, and so are poorer whites.

Anything we couldn't get done that way would simply get put on the back burner or we invent something technical to do same. I don't mind a limited number coming across legally to work at specific jobs for a limited time, and there should be some who become residents by applying for it in their countries, at home, as the law provides since a long time ago,(it takes five years of legal residence before applying for citizenship) through normal channels where they are evaluated as to their past history, health and general fitness for residence, but with limts as to the numbers of persons each year from each country. When you come across that way, you pride yourself much more than when you sneak in, no matter how needful your personal situation is.

I am totally biligual spanish having lived in numerous latin countries for many years including Mexico. But that doesn't relieve me from the responsibility of thinking about what is good for the U.S.A.

We are shipping lots of jobs overseas to get a better position for sales of (U.S.) sic, products. At the same time we're importing cheap labor to do other things in the U.S. Where in h'll are average americans going to work in a few years? The jobs are going to China, India and just about anywhere the owners and stockholders can make a better buck. Let's take a long term view at what is really happening to this country. It's not just a voting shift or new welfare people. It's bigger than that. Huh!!!

Cynthia tucker sells-out African America
http://www.controlcongress.com

Cynthia used her voice today, at the Atlanta Journal Constitutional editorial page to rant about anyone who dares attempts to enforce our immigration laws. Her article used stereo types and no facts to support that our economy would collapse without an unlimited supply of illegal immigrants. Even the most liberal open border economist like Paul Krugman admits that illegal immigration is a drain on our economy.

Cynthia lets talk about facts. African Americans have been the biggest victims of illegal immigration and many do not support the open border-Amnesty immigration policy that you promote. Read for yourself.

WASHINGTON — Frank Morris has been outraged as he has watched leaders in the African American community stand arm-in-arm with Latino groups in support of immigrant rights.

Morris, the former director of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a retired college professor and a current board member of the Center for Immigration Studies, said immigrants compete directly for jobs with African Americans, driving down wages and working conditions while in the country illegally.

“As long as there is an available labor supply, (immigrants) will be preferred to African Americans,” Morris said. “Employers prefer illegal immigrants because they can be exploited without any recourse.”

Robert Brown, an Emory University professor who studies African American politics, said many blacks are “less than sympathetic” to the plight of immigrants. Although many aren’t willing to speak publicly on the issue for fear of angering Latinos, a peek inside the editorial pages of African American newspapers, glimpses into town hall meetings and a look at national polls all indicate that many black Americans are uneasy about supporting immigrant rights.

Do you think Cynthia is an elitist selling-out hard working families by her support for open borders?
