Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Well, that didn't take long.

The New York Times accomplished almost overnight a consolidation of his Republican base that John McCain was encountering considerable difficulty doing. Some social conservatives were distinctly chilly toward him, with but a few reluctantly warming. Along came The Times with its slime job, and just about all the conservatives hotted up.

That's what the ideologically chi-chi Times does - or can do. It roils conservative/moderate blood.

Hollywood writer David Kahane wonders in dismay what The Times was thinking, running that half-sourced farrago of a Barbra Streisand hit-job on John McCain that snarked and sneered and amounted to . . . what? That eight years ago a sitting senator spent some time with a lobbyist who bore an uncanny resemblance to his wife . . . and you just know, deep down, that there was some canoodling going on, don't you? Come on, admit it. Even though we can't really prove it.'

As it ditched Hillary Clinton for the nebulous, platitudinous- and scary - Barack Obama, The Times chose to move McCain from his status as the left's favorite conservative to its most detested (and feared) Republican. None of what it said about his behavior rang true, and apparently none of it was.

With North Vietnam's finest shacklers and ropesmen having failed to break McCain over five years, this pea-shooter effort by the Times' best bounced off him like sleet. He denied it all calmly yet firmly, sent out his fundraisers, raked in buckets, and welcomed wavering conservatives home.

The Times should have foreseen the outcome of its McCain hit-job. But of course, blinkered as it is by ideology, it could not; just as neither it nor the mainline press for which it sets the agenda has been able to see perhaps a fundamental reason for the collapsing confidence with which it desperately is trying to deal.

The mainline press has produced a lot of reasons to explain its tanking circulation over three decades, with circulation decline translating into slumping advertising lineage, diminishing revenues, layoffs, buyouts and plummeting stock prices.

Among the offered reasons: the Internet, flight to the suburbs, transience, meism, changes in the use of leisure time, soaring percentages of women in the workforce, a shift from blue-collar to white-collar jobs (with a corresponding shift from afternoon to morning newspapers), the decline of reading in an increasingly video world.

Yet rarely cited in such litanies by newspaper people is the devout liberalism long infusing the press. It's the liberalism that the (now) late William Buckley first saw so clearly and, with such devastating eloquence, warred against.

It's the liberalism documented in the 90 percent of the Washington press corps telling pollsters they supported kook-left George McGovern for president in 1972.

It's the liberalism evident in the April 1980 preference poll of 500 of the nation's top editors, wherein just 2 percent said they wanted Ronald Reagan to be their next president, when Reagan was rolling undefeated through the Republican primaries.

It's the liberalism so smack-you-in-the-face obvious in the Pulitzer Prizes the press showers upon its ideologically favored own.

The Times' executive editor, Bill Keller, like those in the mainline press for whom he and his newspaper set the ideological agenda, denies any agenda exists. As he told Britain's Guardian in November:

"We are agnostic as to where a story may lead; we do not go into a story with an agenda or a pre-conceived notion. We do not manipulate or hide facts to advance an agenda. We strive to preserve our independence from political and economic interests, including our own advertisers. We do not work in the service of a party, or an industry, or even a country. When there are competing views of a situation, we aim to reflect them as clearly and fairly as we can."

Yet he and the mainline press do indeed work in the service of the liberalism that has driven many away from the mainline media. And such liberalism may explain why the McCain story got page-1, above-the-fold play but only a tiny headline ('McCain Disputes Article') showing above the page-1 fold directing readers to the page-20 next-day story on McCain's response.

We are in for one of the great conservative-liberal presidential battles. The very leftist Times has fired an early salvo, a backfire, really, to the conservative side's benefit.

Conservatives and Republicans know The Times and the mainline press will continue toiling on the Democratic side, whether for Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton. The joint effort will be made to draw John McCain as leading the nation to Bush 3: Eli Pariser, executive director of Obama-supporting MoveOn.org, terms McCain "more Bush than Bush." Sen. Clinton, recalling the 2004 devastating reaction to Dan Rather's Times-like effort to sink George Bush, says, "I won't let anyone swiftboat this country's future."

POWs who, with John McCain, prevailed against the worst the North Vietnamese ropesters could dish out, were integral to the post-Rather "swiftboat" enterprise that raised questions about the character of John Kerry and so helped sink him instead. As its liberalism may have helped drive down newspaper circulation, so the liberalism of The Times- with its sliming of John McCain- may have galvanized conservatives and Republicans to prevail against the Democrats in the fall.

boy, I want more people like you to be running the U.S. Army, the Supreme Court, the IRS. You're my type of people.

I feel safe with such intelligent people holding the reins of power. Oh, I know, even if you make a few missteps as an apparent whako, you would totally be able too run the country and deal smart with all our enemies. Just like Dubya did. He did real smart. We are in a godd war. We hat them islamics, becus they hate us, good amuricans. dog bless AMURICA. We ar du best inn thhe wurd. We got dog on or side.

Senator McCain
As an initial note, the NYT - despite its endorsement for Senator McCain for the Republican nomination - is still the Democratic Party house organ. There should have been no surprise at the piece on Senator McCain, and there are more to follow.

It is really hard to slime Senator McCain, as there is nothing to which he will not stoop to further his political ambitions. He is neither conservative nor a Republican, he just wears the label. He is left of Senator Clinton and approaches Senator Obama. Don't listen to his words, look at his actions. The NYT made some good points about Senator McCain's unethical actions; people are just ignoring it because of the implication of sex between the Senator and the lobbyist. But, we did not need the NYT, we have Keating Five, the Amnesty plan, and the thwarting of getting good justices on the Supreme Court. There are other examples,

Senator McCain does not deserve *any* elective office, much less POTUS.

Don't Blame The NY Times
for Sliming McCain.

All you Conservative Republican types seemed to be having so much fun doing it these past few months....
-------------------------------------------
Hear! Hear!

You are right about the far right wing, McCain hating whackos on TH-who are hopeflly a shrill minority with too much time to post incesantly.

But, they don't excuse the NYT who have also
been very unfair and irresponsible in their coverage of a good Anmerican, who will probably be our next President.

I supported Mike Huckabee more than most on this board, but I realize its time to unite behind McCain

If Huck manages by some miracle to cause a brokered convention, the Party Poohbahs will nominate Romney, and Orin Hatch for his VP-Remember, they still hate Huck.

And so do the little punks at NRO.
They dont hold a candle to Mr Buckley-they aren't even worthy to carry his
jock strap.

William F Buckley Jr.: Now there was the "true conservative" standing in sharp contra-distinction to all these underaged, semi educated mostly gen x whackos and a few grouchy senior citizens who wrongly trash John McCain.

As for Mr Buckly, he was intellectually briliant, kind and magnanimous to his philosophical adversaries, never had an unkind word for anyone, and all the while remaining true to his principles.

Learn from this great man whose likes we will never see again. And support our nominee as he did.

Maybe you should do more reading. He was alive on 8/24/2007 when he endorsed Obama over Hillary. REad it on yahoo news.

Saved the link but it has expired or I would post it.

Maybe you should read up on what his good buddy D. Rockefellor and their fellow CFR/Trilateral Co friends have planned for the country. It's grim.

Won't matter who is elected they own them all.

NYT is good for toilet paper.

and of course
of not being killed (AND being killed)

pax vobiscum

YES WE CAN!
A not even genuine American, possibly candidate manchurian (admit it, the ghosts of commies past; Khrushchev, Brezhnev, and Stalin still haunt thy subconscious), against a brother with hope that we can repair this nation and world, with the heart to work the streets of Chicago helping the poor, widowed, and orphaned strangers, our fellow American citizens, to prove he puts hard work into his hope, and the strength that comes from being a part of the most impoverished segment of our society, the African-American brothers and sisters of this nation who literally produced vast fortunes for untold amounts of white people, while themselves having the "good fortune" of not being killed . . .

means just one thing

Obama = POTUS

troughes re Ike
From the Eisenhower museum: Around 1924 young Capt. Eisenhower was 2nd in command of the US Army's first attempt to move forces by motorized vehicle across the Continental US. He wrote in his journal: "Everything possible must be done to convince our people to build better roads."
Around 1954 Ike signed the Interstate Highway Act into law.

"Shows how much he knew" in 24 and in 54.

And he was an ignorant sonofabeech about Social Security in 1954. It is and always was a Socialist Boondoggel, many have posted on how its original intent, in FDR's own words, has been Socialized even MORE.

SOME party of Patriotic and Liberty Loving Americans SHOULD have attempted its abolition even if it DID mean their disappearance.
It should be attempted now.
All YOU are saying is that Americans are a bunch of stupid, lazy, governmentit sucking, THIEVING pigs!

Don't show your ignorance.

Damn, boy, don’t you even KNOW what NAZI STANDS for!??? National Socialist German Workers Party!! Hitler OFTEN referred to HIS movement as National Socialism!! Libertarian Thinkers have been pointing this out for 40 years!! What YOU call “Fascism” and “Communism” are RIGHT NEXT to each other on the REAL political spectrum—not that “left-right” crap pushed by the Commies YOU’VE been sippin with yo mamma’s milk! Totalitarianism is a CIRCLE that touches back on itself with little to chose between Fascism and Communism. Actually, the texas oil millionaires have been the elite running this country for some time. The complete oxymoron "liberal fascists" is a figment of right wing propoganda. It cannot exist because fascism was a right-wing reaction to communism. Duh.

I will quote it again until I get a comment. Think of it as a game show:

Who said this and when?

"...Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid. "

The answer is:
that noted Socialist,

dreamer from La-la land,

liberal fascist,

tin-foil conspiracy theorist,

America hater.....

Dwight David Eisenhower.
34th President of the United States of America
Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe.

In 1954. Shows you how much he knew. Did you read the part about the "Texas Oil Millionaires" and what they were trying to do?

Guess what, they succeeded with all you lemmings destroying our country for them.

Anna to Lilly
"Your boy Messiah is endorsed by Brzezinski"

I'm pretty sure Brzezinski is dead, Anna.

Perhaps you should spend more time reading the NYTimes so you can keep up.

McCain: ‘It Doesn’t Matter’

Don't Blame The NY Times

You can't blame the NY Times for Sliming McCain. All you Conservative Republican types seemed to be having so much fun doing it these past few months....

Astonishing
"I found one of your pronouncements in my notes."

How anal and without-a-life do you have to be to take notes on a message board?

Post Holer and Great Patriot...
"This country voted conservative from 1999-2004."

No it didn't.

Maybe you forget, but Clinton was President in 99 and 2000, and Bush has been President ever since.

Neither one is a conservative.

"Americans sound pretty stupid. Why do you hate America so much?"

I don't hate America. I grieve for what's been done to its citizenry. Saddest part is that we let it happen.

"Let's definitely hear it for intolerance. "
Yes, Lilly, and cult members like you get to decide what is a victim of intolerance and what isn't. What you describe is largely discrimination, not non-tolerance. I have difficulty feeling bad about not-tolerating teenage girls squirting out bast*rds without being responsible for them.

The cult of tolerance is why we have a Barak HUSSEIN Obama running for President.

For all your screams, Lilly about how terrible non-tolerance is, there's one fact you can't escape:

Prior to the 1960s and the cult of equality and tolerance, this country was making most everything worth having, was building most everything worth building, was telling the world how to better itself and when we spoke, even our enemies listened. It wasn't common for people to be on their 2nd or 3rd husband, it wasn't common for children to grow up illiterate, it wasn't common to murder 10s of millions of unborn children. Having a child out of wedlock wasn't tolerated, so it wasn't done.
We didn't tolerate drug abusers, so they weren't common. We didn't tolerate the graphic and vile content of movies and other entertainment, so the pr0n making up mainstream entertainment today was at most shown in back rooms.

It has nothing to do with laws on the books, but with the values of the culture. And this cultures values are basically, "hey, who am I to judge? I ain't nothing."

Proud Lib says
"Fiercely independently thinking conservatives read book or summary or simply hear the phrase. Inside two days all conservatives are repeating meme."

Well, except we have been calling liberals fascists since liberals started being fascists back in the 60s. Maybe, Proud Liberal, you just woke up and found out that liberalism as it is currently practiced, is a totalitarian scheme intended to steal liberty from the individual.

But let me break it to you PL, unless you are part of the ruling class when libs finally abolish the constitution, you will lose your personal freedom along with the rest of us. The difference will be that you were a willing accomplice and the rest of us will be victims.

soulsamurai writes correctly:
"The NYT was clearly and intentionally trying to get conservatives off of McCain's back and playing defense for him. "

This was obvious from the moment they released the story so good call. I'm happy to see someone else getting the agenda of the NYT. This story was purposefully fact-free. They could have gone after McCain on any number of issues in which he vulnerable but this particular story was chosen to make McCain a martyr.

The whole idea of the NYT story was to keep McCain from completely losing the conservative wing of the party prior to the convention - which has the possibility of being brokered. If conservatives start supporting McCain a brokered convention is less likely.

So Hannity, et. al., fell for it hook line and sinker. They rallied to McCain and the Times managed to keep McCain alive, at least for the time being.

Pinch does not publish pieces of this low caliber at this particular point in the campaign for without a carefully calibrated plan. People are so blind.

To jdw
Ah, jdw honey, I thought your name sounded familiar. I found one of your pronouncements in my notes. 1-19-08 1:39 PM: "Except for the prissy schoolteacher martinet in the White House, Truman, at the end of World War II...We would have taken the responsibility for policing the entire world upon ourselves BECAUSE [sic, all caps] we would have had a global American empire. As God no doubt intended...With the best army in history and the atomic bomb to back [it up] we could and should have had the first global empire in history."

So when you complain about Americans getting brainwashed into the cult of equality and tolerance, we see where you're coming from.

Sans Pareil plans to show up drunk at
the polls. Remember, the election officials can help blind or disabled voters, but aren't allowed to help drunk ones.

In any case, vote for Conservative Republicans for every position possible, to minimize the bad effect any of the 3 candidates would have on our poor old country.

"Liberal Fascism" meme
Guy writes a book. Fiercely independently thinking conservatives read book or summary or simply hear the phrase. Inside two days all conservatives are repeating meme.

BTW
Didn't I hear Oprah introduce "Barak Hussein Obaaamaaaa" on at least one occasion?

W/O=

To jdw
Re "More Americans are voting liberal today because they have been brainwashed by the cult of equality and tolerance". Good God, call the police right now. That is the most disgraceful thing I have ever heard of. That equality stuff, pure Communism. I know I've heard that somewhere before, probably the Communist Manifesto...Oh, now I remember: it goes "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...". What a lot of nonsense.

Tolerance? What could be more un-American! Let's definitely hear it for intolerance. No Jews allowed in this country club, no blacks living in this town (that would be the one where I grew up), no blacks in the front of the bus, no women playing golf on this course, no Catholics in this bridge club, no divorced parents in this PTA, no homosexuals in this church, no pregnant girls allowed to finish high school, no Democrats on townhall...let's get back to The American Way.

John "Sidney" McCain
Basically threw in the towel when he allowed his campaign manager MacKinnon(sic) to dictate the tone of the campaign by threatening to quit if McCain 'bad-mouthed' Obama!
AND
By distancing himself from Cunningham the Senator was just reiterating his 'dislike' of that pesky little thing called Freedom of Speech & an American Citizen's Right of 1st Amendment protection
So as lilly & many other looney lefties would likely agree, John McCain is just a leopard who will never change his stripes.

Unfortunately, if we don't go to the polls in November the Lib-Dems will run the table and end up with not only the Presidency but the House & Senate with Super Majorities (no filibustering the Lib Scotus appointments!!)...
Thus, I have determined to show up hammered and vote for McCain then I can at least tell myself it was because I was too drunk to know what I was doing!

Con. Pundits on the Horns of a Delemma
The Conservative base doesn't have to write a column twice a week.

But for the conservative pundits, what are they supposed to do?

McCain has feet of clay, regarding his image of being above undue lobbyist influence.

McCain has taken many positions damaging to Conservatives. Particularly, his authorship of amnesty, McCain-Feingold campaign restrictions, and 2nd Amendment gun rights, among others.

I don't have to vote for McCain, but I don't have to write a column twice a week.

It's hard to be against the party's nominee for Conservative pundits. But writing support for a nominee that damages the Conservative message is a bit like having cancer. You don't die right away, but over time, it eats at your insides, or you go with the flow.

Will these conservative commentators still be Conservative, after having pushed John McCain for so long?

Will rank-and-file Conservatives recognize the Republican Party as Conservative if John McCain was to win the election, or would the Republican Party morph into a John McCain Party?

What kind of party would that be?

Rooting for Times
I, for one, am praying that the New York Times finds some real dirt that will force John "Mr. Amnesty" McCain out of the presidential race, once and for all. That way, the Republican Party could put up a real candidate as nominee, say like Mitt Romney.

Times, knock yourself on behalf of all Republicans who want McCain out!

Lilly
I wonder if Lilly really is stupid enough to think the dems are without corruption? Rent a clue Lilly, elites of both parties have sold their souls for a mess of pottage.

Your boy Messiah is endorsed by Brzezinski. You are so well educated you must know what the uber globalists have planned for the country. You down with the NAU? Excited about the "new world order".

Pelosis isn't corrupt? Draining the swamp means putting the cold cash guy on the ethics committee? Harry isn't corrupt? Feinstein isn't stearing military contracts to her husband? She publically states she is against the war I imagine.

Grow a brain Lilly.

I suspect an Obama presidency will make us look back fondly on the Carter presidency.

jdw
"More Americans are voting liberal today because they have been brainwashed by the cult of equality and tolerance"

Americans sound pretty stupid. Why do you hate America so much?

McCain
We have no choice but to vote for him?

Consolidated the base? You're dreaming buddy.

re jdw writes:
"That answers your question, even if you disagree with it."

No it doesn't.

This country voted conservative from 1999-2004. Do I need to remind you that Republicans controlled Congress and the Executive branch between 2000-2006?

What's needed is an analysis of "what happened?" If right wing media deserves the credit they give themselves for the rise of the conservative movement, then it also necessarily has to take the responsiblity for the fall. They can't have their cake and eat it too and take credit for the years 2000-2006, but then take no responsibility thereafter.

In order to answer the question you need to show what's changed?

Your "answers" were just as applicable during 2000-2006. It's not like the NYT has changed any.

jdw
"enemies! enemies! enemies!"

John McCain knows he's going to win over swing voters and swing voters typically aren't as tribal and enemy-obsessed as today's conservatives. They want someone they can live with in their living room every night for the next 4 years.

For the record, McCain is a Baptist and theoretically subscribes to the notion of "Loving your enemies."

I would have like to have seen Obama and Clinton criticize the NYT piece.

Elected Republicans Have Little Choice
If you are an elected Republican you have little choice, but to back McCain. That said, McCain is a muddled message for Republicans.

Was the NYT piece up to professional journalistic standards? No?

But does that change anything about McCain's voting record?

Are Republicans supposed to rally around McCain because the NYT trashed him? What about the real meat of the story, the lobbying? After all, McCain is supposed to be "Mr. Klean." And remember, it's not the lobbying per se, it's that McCain holds himself out as being above lobbyist mechanations.

No, his feet are made of clay -- no surprise there.

I can't vote for the co-author of the amnesty bill.

I'd rather fight my political opponent face to face, as the loyal, but determined opposition (against their Socialist agenda), than get stabbed in the back by McCain and the rest of the open border/amnesty Republicans.

That's why McCain has an incoherent message.

Because amnesty and open borders are the gateway to big socialist government, just as sure as The New York Times is a Liberal Organ.

Tell me I'm wrong.

Post Holer - your answer
"So, the problem with Ross McKenkensie and Town Hall in general is that their have been umpteen articles about the NYT's hit piece and McCain, and absolutely no articles about why Republican voters are staying home, why independents are voting Democrat, and why Democrats have recorded record turnouts. "

More Americans are voting liberal today because they have had the ability to reason denied to them; the tools blunted and broken. More Americans are voting liberal today because they have been brainwashed by the cult of equality and tolerance, because they have been kept ignorant of history and taught a warped view of history. More Americans are voting liberal today because they are selfish, self-absorbed, hedonistic, greedy and unthinking.

Obama's getting such turnouts to the Democrat polls because he has the same appeal his kind have had for all history; the messiah. Someone upon whom the unthinking masses can dump the responsibility of their lives upon. Whether his name is Mohammed, Jim Jones, Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, David Koresh, or Barak Hussein Obama, he's still the snake-oil salesman the marching morons flock to.

Independents are voting Democrat for the same reason many conservatives are either voting Democrat or not-voting; the Republicans have for too long acted like Democrat wannabes.
Republicans offer nothing different, and they lack the charismatic "Daddy (or Mommy) will take care of you and give you candy, too" aura that Obama and even Clinton have.

That answers your question, even if you disagree with it.

Try again - Cam
"The "consolidation of the Republican base" evaporated when McCain showed some class by distancing himself from Cunningham's childish behaviour. After which, Cunningham and then Limbaugh denounced McCain. With friends like that, who needs the NYT?"

No, we saw typical McCain behavior:

A local conservative was asked to warm-up the crowd. He did so. In so doing he pointed out that Obama is a party hack, and used obama's full name.

McCain, having not even heard the remarks, threw the man under the bus and apologized to the enemy.

THAT is John Sydney McCain: appease the enemy, accommodate the enemy, embrace the enemy.... and stab his alleged allies in the back.

the NYT knew what it was doing
Okay, let's think long-term, shall we?

"The Times should have foreseen the outcome of its McCain hit-job. But of course"

Of course they did. Except it only partially worked.
The new pravda is that all of us conservatives rallied round McCain after this hit-job. It presumes A) that we weren't really just being consistent with our values and B) we changed our minds about McCain in denouncing this hit-job. Both presumptions are wrong.

The NYT fully expected its hit piece to consolidate the conservatives behind McCain. Why would it want to do that, when we all know the NYT wants and expects McCain to lose?

Pay attention now...

The MSM puts out the pravda that we conservatives rallied around McCain. McCain loses. The MSM declares conservatives irrelevant because he lost anyway, since it declared we rallied around McCain... knowing full-well we won't.

It's a no-risk gambit for the MSM and powers that be. If it works, they'll have removed the last bastion of opposition to the W.E.C. If it fails, their man is still in the White House and they (probably) still have control of Congress; the agenda continues unabated.

outdated
This column is outdated. The "consolidation of the Republican base" evaporated when McCain showed some class by distancing himself from Cunningham's childish behaviour. After which, Cunningham and then Limbaugh denounced McCain. With friends like that, who needs the NYT?

Mackenzie says:
"The mainline press has produced a lot of reasons to explain its tanking circulation over three decades..."

Of course Mackenzie fails to mention that the NY Times is the number one online newspaper destination with 13 million unique visitors each month - and that the Times - unlike Rupert Murdoch's detestable NY Post, actually features conservative voices like Bill Kristol and David Brooks.

He also failed to mention that the Times ad rates for online is up as is their revenue from circulation - though their struggling holdings - the Boston Post - had dragged down their profits.

I wouldn't write these guys off just yet...

Lilly
The Times spent an entire year working on the piece about McCain. Even though they found no proof and both parties denied it, they chose to go to print with it anyway. Not only does this not appear to bother you, you seem to believe the gossip.

Another publication ran a story wherein a man claimed to have done drugs and had sex with Obama in 1999. There's no proof, and the accuser failed two polygraphs, but the story is out there. Do you believe that, too? Does it bother you that this has been printed about the liberal messiah?

What's good for the goose...

Priorities
On Super Tuesday, February 5th, Hillary Clinton garnered more votes than all Republicans put together.

Which is a d**ning indictment of the conservative movement and in particular the right wing media. The right wing media is the vehicle for the right wing message, after all.

So, the liberal media does a hit job a Republican. Whoop dee doo.

So, the problem with Ross McKenkensie and Town Hall in general is that their have been umpteen articles about the NYT's hit piece and McCain, and absolutely no articles about why Republican voters are staying home, why independents are voting Democrat, and why Democrats have recorded record turnouts.

One of these topics has a real impact on Novemeber. The other just makes for fun reading.

No one is going to take right wing media seriously until it takes itself seriously. Making a quick buck slamming liberals always comes before anything else.

In other words,
I love the New York Times!!! Love it, love it, love it!!!!

Personally
I love reading the NY Times. It prints more in-depth news from around the world than any other paper in America. The Tuesday Science section is one of the most up-to-date and superior to all similar newspapers in the world, with all the recent scientific news and superb graphics. I have even occasionally corresponded briefly with some of these scientists following an article.

The Business section is interesting and full, even to me. The Arts section bring news and ideas that I might not be exposed to otherwise unless I was willing to sit at my computer all day and weigh 400 pounds.

The Sunday Times is really one of the highlights of my week - It takes about 2 hours to read everything. I particularly love the Book review supplement, which includes critiques by famous authors and shows me the way to books I might have otherwise missed. A new translation of War and Peace? found about it in the Times. Newly discovered memoirs of a holocaust / poet survivor? Wouldn't have known except for the times.

Get a grip, folks.

MacKenzie dead wrong
Just because the NYT did what we all knew they would do, it does not mean conservatives are lining up to support McCain. Far from it.

This changed nothing. McCain is still a seriously flawed candidate, and unless he makes a huge, sincere, and very visible effort to court conservatives, they will not support him in large numbers.

He obviously thinks he can win without us, and maybe he can. The shine is starting to come off Obama - he's being exposed as an extreme-left unqualified fool. Practically anyone can beat him.

Why does this column have five stars?
I am sick of the ignorance (or stupidity) of those who ever assumed the NYT would NOT do this to McCain, despite endorsing the guy! The NYT, and most libs, know that with McCain they will have endless fodder for their paper, which of course is why they picked him to be the GOP candidate (along with the GOP.)What fun and games they will have trashing a liberal who pretends to be a conservative.

And then you have McCain's liberal voting record....which actually is something the NYT will support for the most part, so they will have to come up with other "juicier" stories.

The columnist says, "Conservatives and Republicans know The Times and the mainline press will continue toiling on the Democratic side." So? This is a surprise? WHY then did the GOP force McCain to be the "inevitable" GOP nominee???

Republicans Unite!
Gov Huckabee vs McCain Debate!!

http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Blogs.View&Blog_id= 1517

Stop the NYT and their Progressive agenda to moderate and weaken the Republican party!

Insist on the debate now!

Conservatives must unite and take back our party now before it's too late! Stand up and give conservatives a voice!

Stand up and support Gov Huckabee's bid to bring the nomination to a brokered convention!

Ross
writes, "The New York Times accomplished almost overnight a consolidation of his Republican base that John McCain was encountering considerable difficulty doing"

What? Nobody polled me. I think he is a skirtchasing nitwit and the allegations are most certainly true and irrelevant. I still won't vote for him. On the surface, he seems much more palatable than Hillary or Barak but, he is not. He is a puffed up tyrant no different than either one of those except much older. The only difference anyone can trot out is Iraq. He is a moron that will probably do more harm than good and they are not going to immediately withdraw troops regardless of what they say. All of them are extremely dangerous for the health of this country and the only thing we can do is put good legislators in office to stop their idiocy.

I have been saying Obama is going to win and I still think that. It probably won't be a blowout however. McCain might actually eke out a victory if circumstances help. The death of the party is assured either way. At least if a dem wins, the dem party will have a hard time coming back after the fallout. I am writing in a candidate.

Progressives Like the NYT Win Either Way
Even if McCain wins - the Progressives will get what they want. Hello! Democratic turnout and enthusiasm for Hillary and Obama during the primaries so far has been far more than Republican turn out. Do you seriously think Sen McCain will have the coat-tails to help Republicans hold on to their seats in the Senate? Can we even hold onto more than 40 seats to block Supreme Court appointments or filibuster bad bills and legislation?

Even if America is ultimately not yet ready for an Obama or Clinton because we fear liberal Judges and/or pulling out and conceding the war in Iraq. And even if conservatives go all out to help McCain win because as Newt Gingrich said, "opposing him 20% of the time is better than opposing Obama 95% of the time." McCain will surely support the Fairness Doctrine, because he still resents the conservatives that opposed him (just look at his response to critics of Campaign Finance Reform and Amnesty, and just days ago his response to conservative radio host Cunningham, for proof), it won't matter to McCain if we help get him elected.

Who knows if we can trust him to follow through with his reluctant promise to cut taxes? McCain will surely support the Kyoto Protocols, and he will likely move us closer to open borders and a North American Union. And it really won't take that much longer for Progressives like the NYT to "change" America with McCain at the helm - because a good number of RINO's and CINO's can't see the forest for the trees and have been all too willing to moderate and compromise their principles for expediency, or at least, the illusion of it. They win either way.

Shame on us if we let it all happen.

No Suprises from the Main Stream Media
It's nothing new that the MSM wants to make the news rather than report it. It's a given. So what if the NY Times shows its hand now, it was predicted that it would do so, after selecting John McCain as the Republican most admired by liberals. Now that it has helped him (or likes to think it has helped him) dispense of the other Republicans, it's time to get out the long knives and make sure that a real liberal gets into the White House. This is something I've been hearing would happen for weeks (at the least) now. Thank goodness we have blogs like this, and AM Talk Radio, and editorials in newspapers like the Richmond Times-Dispatch. If it weren't for that, the situation would be much more demoralizing.

If the election were held tomorrow, it looks as though Obama would win. I don't know what might happen between now and November to change that. I don't know if Ralph Nader will be able to make enough difference this time. I don't know if the Clintons will get rid of Obama somehow. Of course, they would want to make it look as though some angry racist white supremacist did it. Maybe Obama will discredit himself with an inability to perform beyond vague mutterings of hope. However, it seems as though an unfortunately large portion of the country is riding a wave of unreflective sentiment, and it's not going to matter if Obama shows himself competent or not during the campaign. After the election, if Obama wins, we will have to trust to our system of checks and balances to keep us from going to wrack and ruin. Speaking of checks and balances, it seems that Justice Ginsburg has been holding out for a Democrat president before she retires. Maybe we should all invest in promoting Nader as well as McCain for the next eight months.

A successful democracy requires an educated citizenry. We seem to be operating on the level of choosing "American Idol" in looking for a leader to run our country.

All part of the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda
Are we going to fall for this trick once again? The political left has been working hard over the years to get its far left EU socialism to be seen as acceptable. The GOP provided the opening by becoming the slighly left big government party, and the Dems predictably moved further left.

This is all part of the internationalist agenda that is deep in the heart of our political elites. They are squandering our resources, weakening our military, selling out our sovereignty, and mortgaging our future, all with the intent of furthering their vision of a new world order, a one world government.

The next step is to grant the UN taxing authority, and this will be a big item in both the L.O.S.T. treaty and the Global Poverty Initiative being sponsored by Sen. Obama.

If you are concerned about this movement of our country into the new one world socialist state, you are going to find yourself with few choices. Neither party is concerned about it and are actively working against those who wish to see a free, independent, and strong America.

It is not true that we have no other choice, nowhere else to go. If you need a place to start, visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. To borrow some flowery rhetoric from Obama, - WE ARE THE ONES WHO WILL RECLAIM OUR INHERITANCE!

Check out the site, why not? The elites have robbed us of our birthright, and we cannot afford to allow that theft to continue. Thanks, Joe

What Really Didn't Take Long...
Your shallow analysis presumes at the outset that "that didn't take long" for the NYT to reverse it's endorsement of McCain and start attacking him. But what really hasn't taken long is how quickly you've began to underestimate the strategic and political shrewdness of the Left.

What really hasn't taken long is for conservatives and indeed for America to mindlessly capitulate to the path set out and planned by Marxists.

If the Cold War was simply about the arms race, the Berlin wall and the USSR, then perhaps we won Ask yourself, how long did that take? 45 years or so?. Our economy was stronger, and they were embroiled in a costly war with Bin Laden, they couldn't keep up.

The Marxists may yet have the last laugh though as Russia's economy is booming, ours is sagging, and now we're engaged in a costly war with Bin Laden. Democrats (aka Commie sympathizers) are about to sweep our elections, and put the last nail in the coffin with their socialist programs, rampant spending, sweeping tax increases, open borders and global treaties that will yield our sovereignty to International tribunals, chaired by third-world dictators. How long did that take? 25 years or so?

The Left is Succeeding
Even if McCain manages somehow to win in November, George Soros, the MSM, the NYT, the Democrats and the rest of the Left will all have succeeded in the long run by dividing the Republican party and further marginalizing Conservatives.

If conservatives do not unite to force a brokered convention and take back our nomination process, get ready to say hello to more Liberal Fascism in America. You better get used to the idea of the Fairness Doctrine, of Amnesty and global treaties that give away our sovereignty, of higher taxes and regulation, of Universal Health Care, of gun control, of liberal Supreme Court Justices and so on. C'mon, wake up and open your eyes, before it's too late! The real threat is not terrorists over-seas, they cannot defeat us - it's the "enemy within" we can only defeat ourselves and the NYT is not only counting on it, they're facilitating it.

Lefties piling on
The Sierra Club, which calls itself "nonpartisan," has piled on with a series of smeary press releases asserting that McCain has spent his congressional career siding with "special interests."

McCain is probably the only Republican who would give the Sierra Club the time of day, but they have shown their true colors by defaulting to their Democrat-good, Republican-bad monotone.

A group called Republicans for Environmental Protection has called them on it.

Today's NY Slimes
Now their trusty and reliable reporters are covering the "fact" that McCain may not be eligible to be POTUS.

This is based on McCain being born on a military base in the Canal Zone.

Who does the fact checking there? Hamsters?

A military base IS Amaerican soil.

Wishing Doesn't Make it So
I cannot believe how stupid you are Ross. This was not a slime job, you dolt.

The NYT was clearly and intentionally trying to get conservatives off of McCain's back and playing defense for him. The NYT wants liberal/moderate McCain to be the Republican nominee because it weakens the Republican party and marginalizes Conservatives. The MSM is intentionally and strategically trying to influence the selection of our leadership to their advantage, and blind ding-bats like you and too many other bloggers and so called conservative commentators are playing right along with them.

The great liberal-conservative battle is really going on right now - but conservatives in their zeal to not pull out of Iraq have pulled out of the battle here at home with liberal fascists instead. Fools like you have abandoned conservative principles, waved the white flag of surrender and joined hands with John McCain, the NYT, the MSM, and the Democrats alike. You're in complete denial, you're pretending McCain is a conservative, and that he's going to be your champion, and there's going to be this great battle between McCain and the Left, but it's all a charade. Simply wishing him to be a conservative won't it make so. The Marxists didn't have to brainwash you - because you stopped thinking for yourself already.

Electability of McCain
McCain may or may not be a conservative, but I feel more secure with him leading us than I do with Clinton or Obama. At this point, I just want our country to survive the next four years, even if it's going to take a lot of hauling on the ropes in 2012 to pull us back from the leftward leaning that seems unavoidable at this point. If we can get some decent, non-activist Supreme Court justices appointed as well, so much the better. That may or may not happen with McCain, but it absolutely will not happen with Clinton or Obama.
Rich, not Wealthy, am I to infer that you think it possible that McCain is the Manchurian Candidate? Where is Frank Sinatra when we need him most?

Shocked, Shocked
I doubt that anyone (except maybe a few Evangelistic Christians in the Deep South) cares whether John McCain had an affair. But given the fact that our Republican administration has notoriously been legislatively responsive to lobbyists, it is ridiculous for McCain and the entire GOP and Republican electorate to act shocked, shocked when the media reacts to a media report that a female lobbyist hung herself around his office and his neck and bragged to everybody about her access to him. What does everybody think Washington lobbyists do for a living? And I haven't seen proof that Ms Lobbyists, whatever her name, was an imaginary person or a figment of the NYT's imagination.

First, it was to be expected
as soon as McCain became the presumptive nominee that the MSM would turn on their annointed Republican. But, Ross, for you to contend that McCain is a conservative is beyond the pale. He is a socialist at best up against 2 marxists, at the moment, soon to be one marxist.

Also, to conclude that the Vietnamese/Chinese/Russians never "broke" McCain seems specious at best. How do you know they did not "break" him?? Why did they allow him to live while killing most all of the other POWs?? The only reason that I can think of is that he was still useful to them. In what way was he useful?? We will probably never know, but that he was useful is evidenced by his survival.

So, the Times may have generated outrage at their slime job, but that does not mean that all conservatives have forgiven McCain for all those knives in the back over the last 7 years or more.

Audi10, I agree that the Times did not learn that lesson, but tell me what lesson have the liberals ever learned (other than that spineless Republicans will bend over backward to appease the unappeasable).

Shut up about my sister
The common saying in the playgrounds of the Italian neighbourhood where I grew up was that it was perfectly okay for a boy to say "My sister is a moron" but utterly beyond the pale for any other boy to say "Your sister is a moron."

That is the ethos the Times forgot (or perhaps, in the elitist play-date universe where they met only people exactly like themselves and maybe had no siblings at all, never learned) when it attacked the Republicans' sister.

In fact, it is the exact same ethos Al-Qaida forgot when it attacked us on 9/11.

Be not decieved by our intra-family squabbling. When someone threatens us from outside, we close ranks.

So, NYT, shut up about my sister. Or watch your backside.

say, what?
Holy swiftboat!!!!!
