Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The main reason I am writing this column is that many people have asked me how I first realized I was suffering from a brain tumor and what I have done about it.

But I also want to relate the reaction to my disease, mostly compassionate, that belies Washington's reputation.

The first sign that I was in trouble came on Wednesday, July 23, when my 2004 black Corvette struck a pedestrian on 18th Street in downtown Washington while I was on my way to my office.

I did not realize I had hit anyone until a shirt-sleeved young man on a bicycle, whom I incorrectly thought to be a bicycle messenger, jumped in front of my car to block the way. In fact, he was David A. Bono, a partner in the high-end law firm Harkins Cunningham. The bicyclist was shouting at me that I could not just hit people and then drive away. That was the first I knew about the accident. Mr. Bono called the police, and a patrolman soon arrived.

After I said I had no idea I had hit anyone until they flagged me down and informed me, Mr. Bono told The Washington Post, "I would not believe that." Fortunately, the investigating officer, P. Garcia, was a policeman who listened and apparently believed me. While Mr. Bono and other bystanders were taking on aspects of a mob, shouting "hit-and-run," Officer Garcia issued a right-of-way infraction against me, costing me $50, instead of a hit-and-run violation that would have been a felony. Following Officer Garcia's instructions, I promptly paid the $50 fine at Third District Police Headquarters in Northwest Washington, in cash and in person.

Officer Garcia's justification in believing me was soon confirmed by the diagnosis of my brain cancer, in which I have lost not only left peripheral vision but nearly all my left vision, probably permanently. Several people have asked me whether the person I hit was crossing in front of me on my left. I answer, "I never saw him."

The person I hit, identified by police as Don, with no fixed address, was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where police said, "There are no visible injuries."

On the next day, Thursday, July 24, there were more clues that something was seriously wrong. I lost my way to my dentist's office in Montgomery County and never found it. I also had trouble finding my way back to my office. After returning from a speaking engagement in North Carolina on Friday, I found it difficult locating my office in the 13-story building where I have been a tenant since 1964.

My wife Geraldine and I left Washington Saturday to spend the weekend with our daughter, Zelda, and her husband, Christopher Caldwell, and their children at their summer house at Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. When Geraldine noticed that I was having trouble following her in the Boston airport, she suggested I go to a hospital emergency room. I always resist such suggestions and did so this time, but fortunately Zelda prevailed. The CT scan at Salem Hospital showed a brain mass. I returned to the summerhouse and went into seizure the next day.

When Zelda said to call 911, I again resisted, but she again prevailed. I promptly suffered another seizure in the ambulance, the second of three seizures that day. I gained admittance to the high-quality Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, which has an excellent oncology staff. A biopsy was performed, which showed a large, grade IV tumor. In answer to my question, the oncologist estimated that I had six months to a year to live. Being read your death sentence is like being a character in one of the old Bette Davis movies.

I believe I was able to withstand this shock because of my Catholic faith, to which I converted in 1998.

I then called Dr. Donald Morton of the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, Calif., who removed a cancer from my lung in 1994 and has been a friend and close medical advisor. He told me that different people react to serious cancers in different ways and reminded me that I was a three-time cancer survivor.

Dr. Morton recommended Dr. Allan H. Friedman, a master surgeon who is chief of neurosurgery at the Duke University Medical Center.

After studying my CT scan and MRI, Dr. Friedman said a resection -- that is, a removal of the tumor -- was possible by surgery. Dr. Friedman had performed a similar operation this summer on Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts.

In today's world, it is up to the "informed patient" to make many decisions affecting treatment. Dr. Morton recommended that I go ahead with surgery by Dr. Friedman.

My dear friend, the Democratic political operative Bob Shrum, asked Sen. Kennedy's wife, Vicki, to call me about Dr. Friedman. I barely know Mrs. Kennedy, but I have found her to be a warm and gracious person. I have had few good things to say about Teddy Kennedy since I first met him at the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, but he and his wife have treated me like a close friend. She was enthusiastic about Dr. Friedman and urged me to opt for surgery at Duke, which I did.

The Kennedys were not concerned by political and ideological differences when someone's life was at stake, recalling at least the myth of milder days in Washington. My long conversation with Vicki Kennedy filled me with hope.

The irony of my going to Duke to save my life can only be appreciated by somebody who knows that I am a fanatic University of Maryland basketball fan with no use for the Duke Blue Devils and their student basketball fans, who certainly have not turned the other cheek toward me.

The ingenious taunts by the students at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium are usually directed against opposing players, but I am one fan who also has been the target of the "Cameron Crazies." During my last visit there to watch a game won by Maryland, students raised a placard with two pictures: one of Benedict Arnold and one of me. "Two Traitors, " said the headline.

But I was treated with immense courtesy and skill by the great Duke neurosurgical team. Dr. Friedman operated on me for over four hours, starting at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15. He later showed me before-and-after pictures, revealing that the 3-by-1.5-inch tumor had been removed. Of course, cancer cells remain, requiring a rigorous regimen of radiation and chemotherapy, managed by the Duke team and conducted at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington.

Al Hunt, who has become a close friend, though we disagree about almost everything, says it will be very difficult for me to inveigh against Duke in the future. I do believe he is correct. Al and his wife, Judy Woodruff, have been staunch pillars of support during this ordeal and helped arrange our living accommodations at Duke.

I am now at home in Washington, awaiting further therapy. Dr. Friedman recommended that I try to get back to at least parts of my normal life. He suggested reading, but also that I try to write columns, which is the reason I've composed this piece.

There are mad bloggers who profess to take delight in my distress, but there's no need to pay them attention in the face of such an outpouring of good will for me. I had thought 51 years of rough-and-tumble journalism in Washington made me more enemies than friends, but my recent experience suggests the opposite may be the case.

But Joe and Valerie Wilson, attempting to breathe life into the Valerie Plame "scandal," issued this statement: "We have long argued that responsible adults should take Novak's typewriter away. The time has arrived for them to also take away the keys to his Corvette."

Thanks to my tumor, the Wilsons have achieved half of their desires. I probably never will be able to drive again, and I have sold the Corvette, which I dearly loved. Taking away my typewriter, however, may require modification of the First Amendment.

Support for me and promises of prayers sent for me poured in from all sides, including political figures who had not been happy with my columns. I'm told that President George W. Bush has not liked my criticism, particularly of his Iraq war policy. But the president is a compassionate man, and he telephoned me at 7:24 a.m. on August 15, six minutes before I went into surgery. The conversation lasted only a minute, but his prayerful concern was touching and much appreciated.

Touching, ;Prince of Darkness,'
I will pray for your recovery.

Bob, my thoughts and prayers are wi/you
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have been reading your column since I was old enough to read. In the time that you have left, please use it well.

Our prayers--
I'm so glad you wrote a column to let us know how you are. One needn't agree on issues to have concern for someone's health. May God be with you as you battle this dread disease. Write again and keep us informed.

Bless You
May the peace of the Lord be with you.

Novak: A Class Act
Mr. Novak, I loved your book, "The Prince of Darkness," and I'm happy to salute at least one journalist who has a lot of class, which is sadly lacking in many of today's TV, newspaper and radio journalists.

I hope you'll be able to resume your life as a columnist or at least as a part-time commentator on the national scene.

We miss old warriors like you whose life and work spelled Integrity with a capital I!

No time for partisanship
It is hard to believe that people could be hateful when a life is in the balance.

My father passed 15 years ago of the same type of tumor attacking Sen. Kennedy. It is probably the only similarity their brains ever shared. But policies or penmanship are never an excuse to wish someone harm.

I hope the haters can restrain themselves, and save their demonstrations of low class for less personal issues.

Mr. Novak
Prayers are with you and your family.

Poster called ex pat
shame on you. But typical of your lib posts. Can't y'all ever rise above yourselves?

I wish you a speedy recovery
And I know you have been told not to expect one, but that is what I hope you get anyway. Never give up, never surrender. I am not a fan of your work (I often disagree with you), but I have always respected you. Get well soon.

Ex Pat in Geneva
Come on, show a little class.

Bob Novak
Bob, we wish you well. Conservative or liberal we are all human beings. To those behaving poorly, show some class. All the best to you, Bob. - A loyal reader.

Great column for one of my boys!
A 17 year boy I work with recently had a brain tumor removed and is receiving daily radiation in small, focused doses at Sloan-Kettering. This is his second bout with brain cancer, the first occured when he was in second grade. He likes to read about the experiences of others, and I will send this article to him.

Feel better and fight on, Mr. Novak! I'd say things are looking good for you!

Your brain tumor
Bob, I have read and listened to you for years and you, and your family, are in our prayers. God bless you.

Ex-pat in Geneva & Vampire's Reflection
Dudes, quit drinking the kool-aid!!!!!
Valerie Plame WAS NOT A CIA UNDERCOVER AGENT or "OPERATIVE"!
She worked for the CIA at a desk job like thousands of other CIA employees. Her neighbors knew she worked for the CIA! The fact that you work for the CIA does not make you an agent/operative, it makes you an employee!!!! 99% of CIA employees have nothing to do with COVERT operations which is what you have to be involved with to be an "undercover spy". Valerie Plame had NO CONNECTION to covert operations.

Repeat: Valerie Plame had NO CONNECTION to covert operations.

If she had been an agent she would not have come under the protection of the law that you kool-aid drinkers like to quote because it only covers agents that are overseas or had recently returned from overseas.

Back away from the kool-aid and see the truth!

Bob Novak's Brain Tumor
Dear Bob,
The grace and courage you have shown in the face of the news of your terrible illness is an inspiration. Your article today was further inspiration. I, too, have not had much use for Senator Kennedy in recent years, but hearing of his kindness toward you has given me a different perspective on him. It seems that, in the end, we are all just ordinary people who have to deal with misfortune in our own ways. Mr. Kennedy handled his in a gracious and compassionate way, and that’s a wonderful story. I wish both you and Senator Kennedy the very best of luck in getting through the recovery from your surgeries. God bless both your families. I look forward to Ted’s return to the Senate and to reading more of your fine columns for many years to come.
Don Greco

Vampire's reflection
You remind me of Molly- this 16 year old girl from the school in which I'm a counselor. Molly chased another student into the bathroom to beat her up because the girl was wearing peace sign earrings and had a peace sign belt buckle. Molly decided the girl was a "poser", and didn't take peace or the peace sign seriously like she did! So- Molly was going to beat the snot out of the girl in effort to reinforce the importance of peace!

Here you appear, despite having no reflection, to make a sour, stupid comment that has nothing to do with the article and is completely crappy in light of the article's content. Why not go feel superior at someone else's expense, as vampires are wont to do.

Best of luck.
Maybe luck has nothing to do with it, but I wish you both luck and best wishes.

God bless
Prayers are with you and Ted Kennedy

Well Wishes
I was wondering about Bob when I was watching Kennedy speak at the Dem. Convention. So glad to see this article this morning! Thrilled to hear he is fighting and landing some good punches against his cancer. My prayers are with him as he goes through treatment and with his wife and family while they help him through and keep the home fires burning.

- For some of you getting ready to post an ugly comment... hate is a wasted and corrosive emotion.

All my prayers for a speedy recovery!
Bob,
Thanks for updating us on your situation. It was heartwarming to hear how Senator Kennedy and the Hunts helped you. In this time of increasing partisan politics, it's nice to know that people can and do set aside their political differences to help each other.

I hope that you'll be much, much better very soon!

Mr. Novak: God be with you. You and your

family will be in my prayers.

For Joe & SunThe1
A good question if ExPat is even American (definitely not a loyal one in any case).

Ex-Pat cannot show any amount, even "a little" of what he/she/it totally lacks (class).

Rasing Bob in our prayers today and following.

Unbelievable
Have some of you people no shame? Whether you agree with Bob Novak or disagree with him have some compassion. I have no great love for Ted Kennedy but I prayed for him during his recent health problems. Same for Bill Clinton during his. We are all human beings and precious in God's sight. Jesus told us to love our enemies not just people we like. I love how liberals complain about how meanspirited conservatives are but can spit out the worst hatred against people they disagree with. Who's being meanspirited now? By the way Bob best wishes during this trying time and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Novak
God bless you Mr Novak and get better
soon !!!!

In a small town's
Editorial pages in the 1960's, I first saw your picture, (along side that of Mr. Evans).

In those early years in a small Texas town, that column was a first blush at political awareness.

As an adult and a political science major, I met you again in the cable news explosion years.

You've accompanied my political growth and love for the tumble of policy, argument and the American History of our times.

I'm grateful for the intelligence, the quality of presentation and the wide swath of knowledge that you've brought to the political dialog. You've made political life more fascinating for me.

You're quite the professional Mr. Novak.

Fight the good fight, Mr. N:
We need more from your typewriter. Keep on keepin on.

God bless.
He always does.

I have been through such a battle with a loved one. Her Catholic faith prevailed.

Mr. Novak
We are keeping you in our prayers. The road will be tough, but having worked in such an arena as Washington politics for so long, I am sure it will pale in comparison!

God bless you, Mr. Novak!

"three-time cancer survivor"

That's Amazing!

And number Four will be even more delightful :)

God Bless you Mr. Novak!

A man of his word
I echo the words fight the good fight and remember it is a good fight. A good fight indeed.

You and your family are in our prayers.

All good wishes
for a full recovery. Be not afraid. He goes before you. God Bless.

What a great column!
And those that wish him hateful ill will are precisely the one's that need to be totally drummed out of society. Be it the Plame's or the posters here, you have got to go.

Brain Tumor
To: Bob Novak
When I first heard about you accident, I could not believe the early stories the media were telling, and that we did not have the full story. They were all quoting the man on the bicycle. All seemed to make you out to be a bad fellow after all…”Running down a homeless man & fleeing away leaving him with serious injury”. I told every one that day that something was wrong with this picture!

I am relieved that the surgery is over & that it went well.

I know you don't know me, but I feel like I know you through you columns.

I wish you well & will keep you in my prayers.

Keep up the fight & the faith. God will give you the strength you need.

Prayers for Mr. Novak
God be with you.

Libs
It's nice to see the liberal left showing its true colors: the Plame's viciousness and the callous posts by Ex-Pat and Vampire. You may disagree with someone, but they are still a child of God and deserve dignity.

AND VALERIE PLAME WAS NOT AN OPERATIVE. SHE WAS NOT UNDERCOVER NOR A SPY. IT WAS COMMON KNOWLEDGE SHE HAD A DESK JOB AT THE CIA.

Prayers For Bob and Family
Pray for a speedy recovery. We need the Prince back in fighting form...

To one of my favorite columnists.....
May God favor you with His healing hand....Know that you are cared for by many people whom you have touched over the years. I wish you great success with your treatments.
Sincerely,
Mary Blumreich

Thank you, Mr. Novak
I have not always agreed with you, but have always enjoyed your work. May God bless you and your family at this time. We would do well to pray also, as Jesus commanded, for those who have posted such hateful comments, for they truly need His healing.

Stay tough, Bob.
Hang in there. We're all -- well, most of us anyway -- praying for you.

----------------------

And regarding the whole Plame kerfuffle, not a single law was broken by anyone, not even by Richard Armitage, the man now known to have made the "leak" in the first place, nor by "Scooter" Libby, who was strung up after a disgraceful fishing expedition solely because his memory of events was different from someone else's. Bush ought to issue him a full pardon before he leaves office -- right after he pardons Ramos and Compean. I would say that these men have suffered enough, except that they should not have suffered at all.

God bless, Robert
And to the vampire race, Joe Wilson was a liar who testified under oath that on his *mission* to Africa he did find that Iraq had been interested in yellow cake uranium for its nuclear ambitions.

Valeris did recommend her husband for the excursion, altho' she still publicly denies the truth, only heaven knows why.

She and her husband were listed in Who's Who where her employ at the CIA was also listed, so her job was no secret. She had not been overseas for years, ergo she was certainly not an undercover agent working sectetly inside Langley's CIA building. The whole secret operative garbage was invented by a media that thought it was looking at a way to get Rove fired or Cheney impeached.

They were wrong on all countrs forever, The idiot special pros. Fitzgerald know BEFORE he convened his grand jury that Richard Armitage at the State Dept. was the *source* of the leak and the pros. of Liddy was a joke from beginning to end, except he got convicted.

In the process, others lost their jobs and journalists in general looked like jr. high kids who couldn't read their own notes.

Novak kept his word until he was released by his source, but the entire event was little more than a tempest in a p*sspot.

RE: Phew!
Mr.Novak:

I was treated to your post-operation article that not only informed us all of your health status but heard and saw the words and actions of critics and allies alike. Being a fan, I was extremely impressed with your honest account and more so, I am delighted to learn you are on your way back. So please accept my sincere best wishes for a continuing recovery. May I join the millions who have prayed for your recovery while looking forward to hearing and reading your words once again. I wish I had met you while working for the Nationals as I did Tim Russert.

tumors
A brain tumer was my Mother's down fall and probably (did) caused her death.
I'm touched sir. I really am, and thank the Lord that the experts could help you.
Let the liberals squeal, squeal, squeal, they were so happy, poor Tony Snow was just another dead Repiblican, may they rot in Hell.

I'm the NRA and I vote

Best wishes Sir!!!!
There are many of us who have heard you speak and read your articles for many years.

May God Bless you and your family and grant you a speedy recovery!

(But definitely continue to watch out for those sports fans... they're tenacious and committed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Jeremiah 29:11
Mr. Novak,
I wish to share with you a verse that gives me strength in times of trial:

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11"

I pray that our Lord guide your doctors and comfort and strengthen you and your family as only He can.

Grace & peace

Worse than pathetic

1. Valerie Plame testified under oath, under penalty of perjury, that she was covert when Novak outed her.

CHECK.

2. Valerie Plame's boss at the CIA testified under oath, under penalty of perjury, to Congress that Valerie Plame was indeed covert when Novak outed her.

CHECK.

3. Fitzgerald, a Republican appointee, investigated who outed a *covert* operative and eventually prosecuted Scooter Libby for perjury.

CHECK.

It is hard to measure which is more pathetic. The denial that Novak is a traitor or the farce of patriotism that Republicans knowingly front.

To all of you weasels and the....
Wilsons, you are pathetic! Politics have no place when a life is at stake. Ted Kennedy and Bob Novak my prayers are for them and their families. God Bless!

God speed to recovery
Thank you for your report.
I've been wondering how you are.
Get well soon.

God Bless
Mr. Novak - Godspeed.

It makes no difference if I agree or disagree with your opinons.

Love you dude. See you there in the long run.

May God be with you!
It's wonderful that you are writing again - I hope to read many more of your well written articles! It is also wonderful to hear that kindness and good will often supercede political opinion. God bless you in your current fight, and may you feel his peace and love.

Dear Bob
It's Jeff Koopersmith here. I've spent twenty years attacking you and your kind re your neofacist theories regarding our nation. I am the guy who gave you the name - and the did the graphic illustration of you as "NOVAKULA" which hangs on many bulletin boards around the country. You probably have never seem it, but that's okay.

I am also a guy who has many friends and acquaintances on both sides of the aisle from my private practice in Washington since 1980.

And I am a guy who will tell you that I wish you no harm, nor ill, nor pain although you inadvertently have caused so much against the weakest and least prepared Americans.

I will be at your funeral - to honor you as a joumalist who stuck by his guns. I just hope you didn't do it just for the money. If you did
then you'll have Hell to pay Bob.

God Bless you. Don't give up that typewriter and if you must use a dictaphone to celebrate and regret your thoughts over these years.

Jeff

Dear Mr. Novak
Yours has been the first column to read, ever since you have been linked on Matt Drudge's web site. Before that, yours was the opinion I looked for on TV news and commentary shows. You are always the gentleman, with clear, incisive views, easily understood when not shouted over by less polite people whom you tolerate with good humor. Thank you for telling us of your illness and outcome. Please continue to write, no matter what. You have been and will remain, I pray, a teacher to me.
Best wishes,
Ron Pavellas
http://pavellas.blogspot.com

Thank you for sharing
your story. May you again be a cancer survivor!

Clear Thinking1
Clearly, your wonderful thought processes is intact! May God continue to heal you and may you soon be back to a regular schedule. There have been times when I have not agreed with you, but always, I am better informed after reading one of your articles. God Bless you!
We need your conservative voice today more than ever.

A BIG CHALLENGE
Live gives us challenges every day and you must have had many in your illustrious life. You are facing this, probably your biggest one with dignity and faith. I truly admire you for that, and will tuck you in my "prayer box" of people I pray for daily.
May you and your family find the strength you need to face today and your many tomorrows!

Charles Martel nailed it
Same here Charles. I wanted SO BAD to say "good riddance", but I DIDN'T DO IT....
Anyone who uses this opportunity to crap on Bob's head should be b*tch-slapped....

What Goes Around...
I can only think that he's fortunate enough to have the healthcare that he consistently fought to deny others. Certainly, my heart does not feel anything for the Dark Prince. He doesn't deserve anything less than indifference.

God Bless
God bless you Sir and hold you in his hands.
Just a thought, I am truly impressed with the number of “Patriots” who have been so kind as to comment on their unbridled adoration of the CIA, I wonder when this fever of righteousness came over them for I am sure that any mention of the CIA prior to “Agent Play me’s” issuance from the depths was not so jingoistic. Or could it be just a case of “the enemy of my enemy…” , no surely no human’s morals could be that bankrupt, could they?

Thankyou Mr. Novak...
I am happy the Good Lord has spared the life of one of America's great political journalists.

(But I do love the irony that the "Prince of Darkness" is a Catholic! :-D)

What a difference
Isn't it interesting how the 'compassionate' liberals (Wilson/Plame) responded to Mr. Novak's illness vs. the 'heartless Republican' President?

Here's to you, Bob Novak.
May you be healed and returned to good health. Your insight and wisdom are sorely missed, and, if for no other reason than to confound the miserable 'vampire' among us, may you return to your regular column (and life) soon.
God speed and best wishes always.

Mr Novak
Our prayers are with you. Keep us posted, and may the grace and mercy of God comfort you.

God bless!

Glad to see you.
May God be with you, Mr. Novak! I am glad to read you are doing well. I have been wondering about you and am very pleased to see your column.

God Bless you Robert Novak
You were very blessed to have your surgery on August 15,a holy day for Catholics.
The Feast of the Assumption.
Mary's assumption into Heaven.
I am also a convert.
Stay close dear Bob to the Lord.
He will never leave you nor forsake you.

from the other side of the aisle...
I, too, disagree with you on almost everything politically, but wish you all the best. I have missed your presence greatly and am pleased you are taking baby steps back to doing what you do best.

I imagine your experience will, perhaps, soften your stance somewhat, but I look forward to those views. (It's quite scary to think I may agree with you, though.) You have always been well-reasoned, articulate, and passionate. I expect you always will be.

Welcome back.

Stay strong!

Good luck, Robert
Yours has always been a must read column. You have been sorely missed during these critical times.

I see the leftist, no class low lifes have even showed up here to display their crass and boorish callousness.

And I read Timmerman's 'Shadow Warriors' which documents and confirms that the Wilsons, for political reasons, were really actively traitorous participants in the yellowcake ruse.

If it weren't for the cover they enjoyed from the disinformation media and various seditious legislators, these two low level scum might have been prosecuted for conspiracy to perpetrate a fraud.

Best wishes, Bob.

So Happy to Hear from You
I have been a catholic all of my life and although it is sometimes difficult to keep the faith I still strive to follow Jesus and his church.
I was so happy to read of your conversion and your devotion to Saint Thomas Moore one of the bravest and most devoted catholics of all time and a wonderful example to follow.
It pains me greatly to hear of all the christians that were exterminated in Iraq while the U.S. army stood by watching.
Finally the moslems have run out of christians to kill and hopefully there will be some kind of peace in the area no thanks to President Bush for waging this unjust war.
I wish you the best of luck in fighting this disease and remember that if Lance Armstrong an atheist can beat cancer then I am sure that with Jesus helping you you can do the same.

I will pray for you.
Al Lowich
Perth Amboy, N.J.

Best of luck to you and your family.
It has been said that the smaller the stakes, the bitterer the fight. The opposite must be true for there are few battles greater than the one for life or soul.

I shall have to readjust my opinion of the Kennedys and the Wilson-Plames.

Best of luck to you and your family, Mr. Novak. I pray you make a full recovery.

Faith
Bob, great article. We are catholics with great faith and it is less important saving ones body than his soul. Your fight is surely designed for that reason by God. You have spoken out when others would not. God bless you.

CHUCK AND ELAINE

Nasty Stuff
On 11/19/06 my wife was diagnosed with a Grade IV glioblastoma. She had surgery, radiation, and continuing chemo. Nine months to the day after her diagnosis she passed into the arms of God. Brain cancer is nasty, nasty stuff.

Bob, I pray that you survive and that your family and loved ones are prepared for all the the ways they need to aid you in the days ahead.

Cross Fire
Robert Novak, you have been in the cross fire between liberals and cancer before. Just keep your head down while praying and your head up when writing. I truly wish you the very best. You're a better man than I am. Semper Fi

Hope You Don't Call Yourself Christian
You know, it's incredibly sad that there are so many hate-filed, juvanile, and vicious people in this country who cannot pause for one moment as a human being and wish a fellow human being well in their hour of despair. But that's where we're at. There is a time to put petty partisan attacks aside and demonstrate compassion.

I am not a fan of Ted Kennedy or his politics, but I wouldn't wish a brain tumor on my worst enemy. If I could, then that would say more about me as human being than anything else. I pray for the Senator's good health, as I do Mr Novak.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mr Novak as they are with Senator Kennedy.

And to those who can't resist taking vicious, petty cheap shots at Mr Novak, I sincerely hope you don't go around passing yourself off as Christians, because you're anything but Christians.

brain tumors
Having watched my husband go through what you have experienced, you find out who your friends really are. My husband's personality actually improved after this experience. It's nine years later and he is still with us. May god be with you

So good to hear from you!
Bob,

All the best to you. I am so glad you Dr. told
you to write again.

I have recently lost any way to contact a dear
aquaintance who has the same thing and maybe not
as good care.

It is reassuring to hear from you and I have good hope of your future.

Keep writing!

If you haven't had brain cancer
or haven't had a relative with it, lay off Mr. Novak regarding his "hit and run."

When I heard about Mr. Novak's brain cancer, my first thought was "That's why he had that hit and run!"

You know why? Because I, too, had brain cancer. I may still have some cells running around, but in February I will be a 5 year survivor. I know first hand about brain cancer.

Instead of raining on everyone's parade, be glad - and if you are a Christian, thank God - you don't have it. No matter what kind of brain cancer one gets, it's nasty stuff.

Consider the source...
"But Joe and Valerie Wilson, attempting to breathe life into the Valerie Plame "scandal," issued this statement: 'We have long argued that responsible adults should take Novak's typewriter away. The time has arrived for them to also take away the keys to his Corvette.
'"
How utterly classless and callous...but not unexpected from the Wilsons, a couple of self-aggrandizing publicity seekers. Best of luck to you, Mr. Novak.

The truth will set you free . . . .
Thanks for the insight on some unlikely supporters. Only those with small minds and an even smaller capacity to appreciat the human condition react like the Wilsons. Telling the truth for lo these many years has set you free. I, for one, will continue to look forward to your revealing and always well written words, words that make democracy in this country, in no small measure, possible.

God Bless.

I do not like Robart Novak
because of his anti-Israel rantings and anti-Semitism. He would have been far better off converting to Islam than Cathoicism since he has supported Hamas. However, I do feel sorry for anybody who has a terrible disease and for the uncertainty that they must feel about the future. This is tough thing to go through.

BOB NOVAK AND KENNEDY'S TUMOR ATTACK
How ironic: Bob Novak who was born one year and several days before Ted Kennedy, in the same month of February, suffers a tumor attack while vacationing at Cape Cod where the Senator suffered his attack 69 days before; then he compassionately receives medical advice from Kennedy's wife which he followed and may have saved his life. What a truly wonderful story. God bless you Bob and get well soon, both you and Senator Kennedy.

Novak writes:
But Joe and Valerie Wilson, attempting to breathe life into the Valerie Plame "scandal," issued this statement: "We have long argued that responsible adults should take Novak's typewriter away. The time has arrived for them to also take away the keys to his Corvette."

I expect no less from a couple of Liars. Had any in DC said the same thing about the swimmer, MSM would have been all over them.
God's speed Mr. Novak.

Prayers are with you
Dear Mr. Novak,
I continually pray for your recovery and, seeing that you are a man of faith, am heartened by your article that you are doing well. You know that you have been an upstanding man when the likes of the Wilsons are not on your side.
Thank you for all you do and God Bless!

Get well, We miss you.
Dear Mr. Novak, You are in our prayers, Now go one and heal. GOD be with you.

May God Be With You
Mr. Novak,
Here's to wishing you a full recovery. It sounds like there is reason for hope.
The comments of the Wilson's only show what kind of people the Wilson's are. I never did believe there was any vindictive motive behind you printing that Plame worked for the CIA. It was simply part of a story which Joe Wilson brought to national attention himself.
The best of luck to you.
But you might have to start wearing a Duke jersey, at least once in a while.

Good luck, Mr. Novak!
You've been in my prayers several times recently. Whenever I see a newspaper editorial page or read Townhall, I still see your picture. Probably will for the rest of my life.

Blessings, and the grace of God be with you.

Vampire and Ex Pat
It wasn't Novak but the liberal Dick Armitage who "outed" Plame. Plame wasn't an under cover agent. Fitzgerald never prosecuted anyone for outing an under cover agent.

Trolls, go away.

Welcome back...
Welcome back and thanks for the update. God luck and keep those columns coming...

Mr. Novak,
Let me first thank you for years of dedication to the conservative cause in the US. I always looked forward to reading your articles, and stayed well informed because of them during the past decade or so. Needless to say that you are terribly missed!

About two years ago I realized that within the so-called conservative movement, there were lots of lost souls; people who didn't really know Jesus. People who were not born of the Spirit of God; people who, like Nicodemus before he met Jesus, were religious but who would not be allowed at the end to enter the kingdom of God.

I always thought you to be an Evangelical Christian, although the fruit of the Spirit was not evident even between the lines of your writings. I must admit that I was shocked and saddened to read that you had "converted" to Catholicism.

Sir, please seek the Lord, search the Scriptures, fight against deception! By His grace, God has given you precious time to prepare for eternity. Repent, and believe in Jesus Christ! Reject fables, foolish pagan traditions and man-made roads to "salvation". Stick ONLY to the Bible, the Written Word of God to lead you to Jesus, the Living Word of God! There can only be one truth, and Jesus say He is it! Place your trust in HIM alone!

My prayers are with you, not mainly for your physical recovery, but rather for the salvation of your soul and eternal life in Christ Jesus.
Acts 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Best wishes
My very best wishes for your recovery Mr. Novack. I have always liked your writing and hope that you will continue.

To Guy from AE...study Christain church history. The Catholic church was there following the teachings of Jesus Christ long before any Evangelican Christian sects. Apparently you are not aware that the Catholic church also has the Bible.

shaking my head in amazement...
It has been fascinating to see the hate-filled liberals not only display their mindless hatred but also display it proudly--all the while proclaiming that it is conservatives who hate. By so doing they also announce their ignorance.

I too was diagnosed with a brain tumor, in 1992, though thankfully mine was merely large and growing, not malignant. My pain and misery was comparatively short-lived, not comparable to Mr. Novak's or Sen. Kennedy's, though I too had moments when I knew not what I did, nor will I ever, apparently, remember them.

I too was prayed for by many and I was surprised by the best wishes arriving from far and wide, even from friends I had not seen in 30 years.

God bless you, Mr. Novak, and may your recovery be as complete as mine.

Very glad that you are recovering
Thank you, Mr. Robert Novak, for another excellent column.
We are very happy that you are recovering and hope that you recover completely and very soon. We need, and appreciate, your factual rejporting.

God Bless You Mr. Novak ---
When I got my email today from TownHall.com I was so comforted to see your article! I had been praying for you, and wondering how you were doing. You will continue to be in our prayers, dear Sir.

As for the vicious attacks, as my mother would say, "consider the source." As others have posted here, I know about brain tumors. Seventeen years ago, Sept. 14, we received the news that my father had a brain tumor. I insisted that the doctor put my father in the hospital for tests because I was convinced that he had "something wrong with his brain". He had had a couple of seizures, and his behavior had changed. To all those who find in themselves to wish Mr. Novak harm, and delight in his diagnosis, I pray that you, or your loved ones never go through this horrible disease.

Dad only survived 4 days after receiving the diagnosis, but he is home with our Lord. Dad's brain tumor had 100's of smaller tumors surrounding it, so it was inoperable.

Our prayers are with you. Thank you for keeping us up to date.

and another thing...
I could relate to your daughter's insistence in your care -- I did the same thing!
JESS

lying under oath
Have you noticed that lying under when you are in DC gets a free pass. Remember Clinton, Wilson and Plame and how many others get to walk.

The difference of attitude by the Christian conservative versus the liberals towards a person with a serious health problem is astounding.

A brain tumor can cause so many health problems, blindness, deafness, paralyses, to numerous to mention. It can creep up on you or it can manifest itself all of a sudden. So yes it is possible not to see movement to the side. As Mr. Novak said he has lost his left eye vision. Until you have gone through such an event do not judge what you do not know.

Mr Novak my family will continue to keep you in our prayers. Your work is not completed.

Brain tumor
I was sorry to learn of Teddy Kennedy's brain tumor. I am sorry when anyone has a problem.
I am even more distressed about yours. I have not always agreed with your ideas and I always thought that you had a sour take on life, but I regret that you have this. Your opinions will be missed. I wish the best for you that is possible.
I am a retired internist and am curious to know what type of cancer it was. A mention was made that you had had three bouts with cancer. You wrote about the lung.
I am not a Catholic, but I am a Christian of sorts (maybe not a very good UMC), but I would be concerned about you in any case.

Changing Minds
Mr. Novak, I have wondered about you and am moved by the change this tumor is bringing to your life. It is apparent that we are all undergoing a change rather we want to admit it or not. Your life is showing me that even when we live by the sword, we do not have to die by it. Who knows how your life will finally end? What is apparent is that your living is making the case that hating is not forever, that the people you hurt on your way up, you will meet again on your way down and that we are our brother's and sister's
keeper. I will keep these lessons in my mind as I continue on my life's journey.

ex pat in geneva
I think Plame and her husband are traitors. They were working to undermine their president. She was not covert and hadn't been for a long time. I don't trust either one of them. Mr. Novak, I hope you have many years ahead of you. You are a good man.

wilsons
The Wilsons are typical of the hateful, nasty, unfeeling dems so I am not surprised.
I am happy that the surgeon was so skillful and I pray for Bob's continued recovery. There are not enough good ones like him in this country today.

Mr. Novak.
Sincere best wishes to you. I hope you beat it.

And if you do, just remember that it was earthly medical science that saved your life.

The best to you
May God be with you & your family, and help you thru this. As for the Wilsons, God will handle them in His own time. The hatred for their fellow man is a lot of punishment.

Mr. Novak

Am pleased to hear that your are doing better and alive. God is merciful and he will hear your prayers if you do ask. It had been real sad for me to hear all the hatred out there in our world of the unbelievers. God is in control
and He promised in His Word "Vengeance is mine". I have seen this promised come true a lot of times. Myself is going through hard times, since my husband is a survivor of Ca. It had been very difficult times, but The Almighty God provided my husband with a very
good Dr., who is very caring and understanding of the situation. Remember God work through mysterious ways and He never leave or forgets
us. He promised He will be till the end in our side.
I wish you and your family strength from above and that you be healed by Jesus Christ. Call on him and He will answer. Have faith and claim His Word. He will not fail. Am a living sample. Have a Jesus filled recovery!!!

GO MR. NOVAK!
May G-D bless you with recovery and peace!

Your Brain Tumor
I lived through a 4 1/2 year battle that my wife had with a brain tumor. She had three resctions and lived a good quality of life after the first two. Our own Christian faith kept us going.

Keep up the good fight. The treatments available today are better than 14 years ago.

I am praying for both you and Senator Kennedy.

What a trivial and meaningless thing....

".... it was earthly medical science that saved your life..." to say to a Christian.

It's still amazing to me that atheists/agnostics, humanists, secular progressives, etc. feel the need to go out of their way to say anything.

The ONLY thing that Mr. Novak needs to remember is that WE ARE praying not only for him and his family, but for his surgeons and health care providers as well.

I'm confident that Mr. Novak knows God is with him always.

Bob Novak
I have long enjoyed reading your columns. My wife passed away in 2003 after fighting a malignant brain tumor. She was operated on by a surgeon who studied under Dr. Friedman and had similar post operative treatment as you indicated you are undergoing. I have hope and pray that progress has been made in the intervening years and that you far surpass the longevity predictions with a good quality of life.
Sincerely,
Frank Boyle, Captain, USN Ret.

compassion
"Ye without sin--cast the first stone. How cruel some can be but many more will pray for you Mr. Novak and my husband and I will join our voices with theirs....God keep you!

Best Wishes....
You must know of many....the unknowns...readers who have said a prayer for you, your loved ones and the continued good health and strenth for you doctors. Your story of kind old Ted Kennedy, reminded me of my friend's experience years ago, when he dated the daughter of one of the Chicago Mafia bosses. He was so taken by how polite and caring the father was, as they chatted, until his date was ready. Long story short, don't get too sappy on us about Ted Kennedy, p-o-l-e-e-z-e!

see to it that you get better.
Dear Sir!
I have read your columns avidly for a number of years and sometimes I agreed - sometimes I did not. That's my favorite type of thinker. The ones I dont ever agree with a boring - the ones I always agree with make me wonder whether I am maintaining the level of sanity and wisdom I expect of myself.
So, after several years of admiration for your work, please get well. And get back to work. And please make me doubt my knowledgde and ideas. I need that.
Gog bless - God's speed - beat the cancer!
Sincerely,
Vladimir Weissman, Copenhagen, Denmark
PS: I hate Ted K. He has done enormous damage to the US and the world. But I sincerely wish he will beat his cancer. So, when he is fully recovered, we again can hit him in the head with arguments. Please tell the Kennedys their bitter political oponents from overseas wish Ted a speedy recovery. And thanks to mrs. Kennedy for advising you. Now, that is true American aristocracy.

May the Lord bless and keep you
May the Lord cause His face to shine upon you and give you peace.

Our prayers and support.
Mr. Novak, although politically we do agree in some areas, this has nothing to do with your phyicial health. My friends and I will pray for your speedy recovery and for continued strength for you and your family. We look forward or reading many more years of your columns.
God bless you,
Reid M. Baron

My Brain Tumor
Mr. Novak, You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am fighting ovarian cancer and know how scarey it can be. And how difficult it is to adjust to the change in your lifestyle. Hang in there! We look forward to more of your wonderful articles and point of view. Though I am a conservative, I know that when the chips are down we are all fellow Americans.

You have made the world a better place
Bob,

I have been reading your columns since I was a teen (I'm now 54) and almost always enjoyed and learned from them. You have a clarity of thought that few possess. I wish you the best.

Dear Bob,

Our family was saddened to hear of your illness. We met several years ago when you were in Syracuse for a game and did your show from the NBC affiliate, there. My husband ran the camera and I assisted you.

I remember thinking you a lovely man. You asked about our family and spoke of yours with great tenderness. I later happened upon a news blurb which said you were a convert to Catholicism and that while others might not believe it made a difference in your life, you knew that it did.

As a Catholic, myself, I can only say that as the gentle person we met that day, you truly do embody a peaceful and kind spirit. You and your wife and family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Linda DeMerle-Tubbs

Evans & Novak
I watched Rowland Evans and Bob many years ago when they had their weekly show. I admired them then and have been a fan of Bob's even after 'Rowly'passed away.

Mr.Evans,I hope if you should read these posts, you will consider the sources of some of the posters. They just can't help themselves. That's the way of some of the left are and you know it all too well.

Mr.Evans,I hope your cancer was caught in the early stages and that your surgery and the medicines will do the trick.

Cancer is a terrible thing, but many are curable. I hope you will be well soon and back at your job. We have been missing you .

You have been in our
thoughts and prayers since first hearing of your diagnosis. Thank heavens you listened to your daughter - may God be with you now and in the days ahead. And please keep us posted - we have felt as though we "knew you" even though we are strangers.

Bless You.
God bless you Mr. Novak. You're the best.

Cindy
God bless you in your fight with cancer. You will be in my prayers.

Good To Hear Of Your Progress
Welcome Back!! While I do not always agree with your political philosophy I very much respect your opinions, and read your columns. You are a good man Mr. Novak, and are in our prayers.
BEAT THIS THING!!

Wishing you a speedy recovery,
and looking forward to many more excellent writings...

Sharing your Catholic faith...
...and all our prayers are with you!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and please keep the columns coming.

Bill

Blessings
I join others in praying for your healing.

Don't believe them
The doctors who say, "six months or a year." I suppose they have the experience, but there are more things that are "dreamt of" than what their experience would tell them.

I've asked Bishop Sheen to help me out, put in a word, about my left hip (bone spur, bursitis)--probably the least of my physical problems. The pain and aggravation has largely disappeared. I wouldn't be surprised if the x-rays validated this fact.

Anyhow, your article from start to finish is very moving.

I look forward, if I may say so, to hearing your comments about McCain's first five years or so. As President, that is.

Great therapeutic article
Good doctors are rare in our HMO world. It sounds as if you have several. God has looked at you and said "not yet". I am at about 50/50 in agreement with your published opinions, but in this circumstance I address you as well as Senator Kennedy, as a fellow human. Get well soon and Godspeed.

fight the good fight
I lost a husband to brain cancer in 2000. He had a Grade IV glioblastoma multiforma (sp?), which originated in the brain, and for which there is no cure. My husband was given "a couple of months" and lasted for six (from diagnosis, which took 2 months). He, also, took his death sentence with grace and dignity. I admire your forthrightness and honesty and pray that you will be able to continue your good work for many days--weeks--even years. When the time comes, I pray that you will rest at ease knowing your life's mission has been fulfilled. God Bless! -Karen

Prince of Darkness ...
... is always in the light. God speed Mr. Novak ... God Speed.

Bob, you are the best!
For many years I have had the greatest respect for your intelligence, honesty and courage. Your autobiography provided so many great insights into the inner workings of Washington. If only journalists were as direct, honest and clear in their thinking as you have been over the years. My family and I are praying for your health and happiness ... and I am thrilled that your spiritual awakening has so greatly helped you through these times.

God Bless You!

Keeping score
Mr. Novak, I’m praying for your recovery from this terrible disease. Even when we’ve not agreed, you have been a decent and honorable man.

The witness you’ve given to the goodwill of people who disagree, sometimes vehemently, over matters political stands as a lesson for all of us. I join you in saluting Senator and Mrs. Kennedy, President Bush, and Al Hunt and Judy Woodruff for the kindness they’ve shown you in your time of need.

Sadly, there exist those whose hearts are made of stone, whose true colors are also revealed in troubled times. Let everybody here note and remember the basic meanness of:

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wilson
Some of the more vituperative left-wing bloggers
David A. Bono, of the law firm Harkins Cunningham
And, from this very thread, we should add such oxygen thieves as Ex-Pat in Geneva, Vampire’s Reflection, and JL.

These people need to be in our prayers, too – maybe even more so than Bob Novak, since they are more desperately in need of the Lord’s mercy.

More in common...
Thank you, Mr. Novak, for reminding us that we are all human. As McCain said, and I believe, we have more in common, even with our political "enemies" than we have differences. It will be a wonderful day when we can all lay aside our petty arguments and hatemongering. I'm terribly sorry that it took a brain tumor for you to experience this peace and good will. Best wishes and many Hail Marys on your behalf.

Thank you and good luck
Thank you for sharing your experience and I want to wish you the best of luck in your recovery.

Mr. Bono should hang his head in shame. Although he did the correct thing in stopping what appeared to be a hit-and-run driver, it is amazes me that people in this day and age will still take part in a mob-style conviction even as a policeman was handling the problem. As a lawyer you would think Mr. Bono would be especially wary of presuming to play judge and jury without due process.

As for Joe and Valerie Wilson, are we really surprised? After all, Hell hath no fury like a liberal whose dishonesty is exposed for all the world to see.

Missing your work
By mid-August, I found myself checking your archives to see when your last column had appeared. Near month's end, I figured that, after 50 years, a guy can take a month off if he wants, in order to be refreshed for the campaign sprint. I still thought I was right when I finally saw your 27 Aug column.

Now, although I had considered a health setback as also being a possibility, I am sad to hear that that is what has occurred, and I pray for your full recovery from this.

I'm pleased (but not surprised) to read that you credit your faith as your strength. I've never really understood the phrase "God-fearing Christian" because, to the contrary, I've found non-believers to be far more fearful when it really counts, while believers find both strength and peace during challenge or crisis. Finding comfort from your foes fits right in with that.

To many more columns of first-rate reporting.

novak
may God bless you and keep you.

i find it interesting that the most partisan columnist finds solace with those from the opposing side.

it is in keeping with my belief that as americans we are way to dismissive of the other side.

we are all americans and that is more important than who is liberal or conservative.

Novak prevails
The haters have again shown that they have cancer of the soul and spirit. Not much can be done to help them. Thank goodness you have such excellent care , and you have the support of all of us out here in the anonymous USA. You will prevail because you are respected.

I would suggest
That our Republic would be better served if those holding supposedly "opposite" principles valued those principles highly enough so that they did NOT become "good friends." When it happens with those in the 4th estate Truth is often sacrificed to such relationships. Or even worse, true friends are.

Bob, I sincerely hope, as a Cameron Crazy, that you come through this, but I still maintain that there is TOO MUCH "civility" inside the Beltway that allows EVIL to prosper and strangles Liberty, rather than too little.

Glad Ted the Rapist/Murderer was nice to you, still doesn't change who and what he is and the IMMENSE THREAT he represents to the Republic and My Liberties. I could have wished you kept some perspective on that.

Perhaps the problem is that all politics is indeed Local and you guys have all been practicing Local Beltway politics for too many generations. It is a incestuous cult whose results are all too obvious.

the big mick

God Bless you!
Your story both saddens me and gives me hope! Never let the bastards get you down! What ever God has planned for you... I'm sure it's a good plan for you are a good man! God Bless!

Ex-Pat in Geneva, Vampire’s Reflection,
I hope that God finds it in his wisdom to hit you with a bolt of lightning, Cheers

Bob Novak one of the best columnists of his time. May God watch over you and your family in these tough times.....

Robert Novak brain surgery doctor
I am not surprised that the Anti-Semite Bob Novak in critical times did not mind that his surgery was performed by a Jewish Dr. Allan Friedman, a master surgeon who is chief of neurosurgery at Duke University. I am sure it must be because he could not find a Palestinian “freedom fighter” with an MD degree to perform it?

And ye shall know them...
Vampire & ExPat - may your shameless, depraved, shriveled little souls find mercy at the judgment.

Whatever it is you are selling, it is difficult to imagine how a well-adjusted and compassionate person would want to buy it. Rest assured, I will remember your poisonous comments from today, whenever I chance to come across any other comments you care to offer.

You are an abomination before God and Humanity.

Our Thoughts and Prayers are With You
My 42-year-old wife is dying from multiple brain tumors. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Nat
.....and mine with you and your wife....

Mr. Novak:
My family's prayers are with you. My husband and I have read and listened to your commentary for years. You are a beacon of light in a world otherwise full of crazies and darkness. I hope the only thing you have to give up is your Vet!!! Sounds like your typewriter is still pretty sound. Thank you for your years of service to the journalistic cause!!!

Well Wishes
It was my pleasure meeting you at Wilkes University in April. I have been watching you since 1980 which means 28 years most of my life.
Speedy Recovery!

Bob Novak's brain tumor
We will keep you in our prayers and have dearly missed your wit and wisdom.

Stellar Journalist
Mr. Novak, you are the best.

I hope this message finds you well, as active as can be, and mentally alert.

Time has proved you absolutely right about your "New Journalism" you write about in your magnificent autobiography (beginning p. 221).

Some day I wonder if we'll learn anything more about Mr. Sullivan's "accidental" death--if there is anything else to learn.
