Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sen. John McCain had just begun his speech from Kenner, La., on the year's last primary election night when distraught Republicans began e-mailing each other this message: Is it possible at this late hour for our presidential candidate to learn to read a teleprompter?

McCain's strategists, concerned that he has been out of the spotlight for months while Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton battled for the Democratic nomination, long ago planned to get some national attention Tuesday night. But McCain looked uncomfortable addressing a few hundred supporters at the dreary Pontchartrain Center in the New Orleans suburb.

In contrast, Obama's managers booked the huge Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., site of the Republican National Convention three months from now. The Democratic candidate showed off his oratorical skills before a big partisan audience.

JUSTICE HILLARY?

If Barack Obama is elected president, mutual friends say the best course for Hillary Clinton might be nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court rather than staying in the Senate.

Clinton is also talked about as suitable for secretary of state in an Obama administration. The consensus among her friends is that she would not be content forging a lifetime career in the Senate, as Sen. Edward M. Kennedy did after he lost the 1980 presidential nomination.

A footnote: The last confirmed Supreme Court nominee without prior judicial experience was Lewis Powell, a prestigious attorney from Richmond, Va., named by President Richard M. Nixon in 1971. No high court selection has had so modest a legal background as Clinton since President John F. Kennedy named football star Byron (Whizzer) White in 1962.

SEN. EMANUEL?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reported to be privately talking about Rep. Rahm Emanuel, currently House Democratic Caucus chairman, as the next senator from Illinois if Sen. Barack Obama wins the presidential election.

Emanuel told this column he is not interested in the Senate and has not talked to Pelosi about it. He also suggested that Pelosi might be saying she would regret losing him from her leadership team. However, the source quoting the speaker indicated she was enthusiastic about Emanuel's elevation to the Senate.

A footnote: The same source said Pelosi indicated House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer would be her eventual successor as speaker, even though she opposed his election to the second-ranking leadership position. Emanuel has been widely mentioned as the speaker of the next decade.

VICE PRESIDENT JINDAL?

Retiring Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia, a prominent Republican moderate publicly critical of his party's right wing, has joined conservatives boosting newly elected 36-year-old Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to be John McCain's vice presidential running mate.

Meeting with reporters, Davis said Jindal as the son of immigrants from India would add an ethnic element to the Republican ticket without turning off any voters. He noted that Jindal, who served briefly in Congress before his election as governor last year, has about as much federal experience as Barack Obama. "I don't know whether that qualifies him to serve as VP or not," Davis commented.

Jindal-for-vice president chatter got a boost when he spent a recent weekend as a guest at McCain's Arizona cabin.

COURTEOUS REPUBLICANS

Sens. John Warner and Pete Domenici, two senior Republicans not seeking re-election this year, made certain that Democrats narrowly passed their budget, 48 to 45, because they exercised old-fashioned senatorial courtesy.

The two most senior Democratic senators, Robert Byrd and Edward M. Kennedy, were not present for the vote because of illness. Warner and Domenici gave them "live pairs" -- not voting in order to negate the absence of the Democrats. If Sen. John McCain (the only absent Republican) had been there and Warner and Domenici had voted, the budget would have failed on a 48 to 48 tie.

A footnote: Sen. Hillary Clinton was absent, but Sen. Barack Obama was presented and voted for the budget.

Novak Ignores #1 issue
Bob, why have you yet to write about how Governor Schwartzenegger has broken the law by illegally authorizing changes to the marriage licences in California without an accompanying enabling statute? Why have you not alerted your conservative readers to the fact that Schwartzenegger has also promised to break the law and issue the illegally amended marriage certificates to hundreds of thousands of homosexuals from all around the country to get "married?"

I guess it's easier for you to focus on the real pressing stories like McCain not being able to read a tele-prompter.

Bob, I can understand why you and many other "conservatives" who failed to hold Romney responsible for his illegal actions doing the exact same thing Schwartzenegger is doing which is that it would expose you PseudoCons for who you really are.

But the grassroots knows what is going on Bob. You guys are totally disconnected from us.

For once Novak, can you please tell the truth starting with the fact that Schwartzenegger has broken the law and you have been totally silent about it.

The McCain Mistake
- was the GOP nominating him for President.

I'd rather see Jindal clean up LA for a few years, then run for President in 2012 - rather than sully himself has a running mate for this character.

In the meantime I think I'll vote for Bob Barr for Prez and whatever other Libertarians or Constitutional Party candidates are down ballot. If the GOP wants my vote back, they can start by voting against this farm bill, and for the FairTax.

Hillary for SCOTUS?
Have we ever had a Supreme Court Justice so inept that he failed the bar examination?

The Klutz Factor
Maybe McCain is the lesser of evils. But if he really can't read a teleprompter, and walks around with his collar up and shoe untied, we've got another Bush klutz who, in eight years, couldn't learn to say New-Klee-Er!!

Let's just hope he does not do a Dole, and run a sideline Viagra commercial.

Perhaps we have.

A poster on another column indicated that JFK appointed a 'sports person'.

I think his name was Byron White?

Does anyone know more details?

McCain cannot read a teleprompter, but Obama cannot talk WITHOUT one.

Ever listen when he is forced to talk 'off-the-cuff'?

It is a whole bunch of 'you know's, 'ummm', (big gaffe), 'ummm', (another big gaffe), 'you know'...

So, I want to see several face to face debates, that ARE NOT orchestrated by the MSM.

~~~
No, our maverick will probably do a 'Legalize Marijuana' commercial.
He hopes to pick up the 'hippie vote'.
The last time I looked
it was up to the Govenor to name a replacement. In additon, what would be the ols normal ting to do was for O'Vomit and Mclame BOTH to resign so that the people could VOTE on the next Senator. But our new "leaders for life" have abandoned that tradition.
As for Jindal he would be a fool for running with Mclame. Beside, he needs some time as governor so he can learn the ropes AND the people can learn what he stands for (besided being elected).
Hillary SCOTUS??? Hahahahaha; of course if nominated, the Republicans would probably OK her. After all, the voted for that crazy Marxist Ginsburg.
General: McCain weak on security?
Will this hurt McCain?
WashingtonTimes-The most senior retired military officer to back the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, says the first-term U.S. senator will not give Sen. John McCain, a decorated war hero, a pass on the issue of national security in the fall campaign.
“It doesn’t take very long to uncover national security issues that McCain is weak on,” retired Air Force Gen. Merrill McPeak told The Washington Times.
“For McCain to think he has a monopoly on virtue in the national security issue is going to be shown a pretty flimsy idea very quickly,” he said of the probable Republican nominee.
This article is about the Supreme Court Justice. For the sailor, see Byron White (sailor).
Byron Raymond White (June 8, 1917 – April 15, 2002) won fame both as a football running back and as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Appointed to the court by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, he served until his retirement in 1993. He was married to Marion Lloyd Stearns in 1946 and the father of two children, Charles (Barney) Byron White and Nancy Pitkin White.
He was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, and died in Denver at the age of 84 from complications of pneumonia.
I goofed...White was a middle
of the road Supreme Court Justice not a super liberal justice. Ginzberg was appointed by Clinton when he retired to fill his slot.
My mistake.
McCain's Mistake
McCain made a mistake? McCain is a mistake. But he is our mistake and we can and will make a'silk purse out of a sow's ear'.
All conservatives know we did not choose McCain. Others did. They knew just waht they were doing,too.
We will not let them win. We will get behind McCain and if he won't fight these rascals,we will.
We have a mission and that mission is to keep our country safe in the hands of American-loving citizens.
The left will have to take our country.We will not hand it over to them.
Please citizens,search your hearts and look at the alternative to John McCain.
Can you live with being a part of condemning this country to an Anti-American so-called leader because of your disappointment in our candidate?
He is a loyal American,even considering his negatives.
We will start work to rebuild our party from the bottom up,after this election to make certain the next election will be a result of the rebuilding.
We can do it,but not if Barack Hussein Obama is in control.Think about it!!!
One Other Thing....
Check out.... N'COBRA....Just part of the reason we must persevere.
Reality
I was not happy when McCain ended up being our Republican nominee. I will admitt that I did exactly what I have preached not to do. I made a decision with out really knowing the person. I watched the hr long interview with Shawn Hannity, by the end of the program I was totally impressed with the chracter that I saw unfold. He is a very knowledgeable, I may not agree with him 100%, but I can guarantee that I disagree 100% with Obama. Think about your vote, do you want the government more in our lives? Do you want someone who stayed under the teaching of a hate filled racist for 20 years? Do you want the most left leaning Liberal in Congress running our lives? Do you want someone who wants to raise taxes of every kind, when it is a proven fact raising taxes hurts the economy and actually lowers government revenue. Do you really want someone in power that has no respect for the military. Well I for one want someone in the white house that I can trust, and don't have to worrie if he is planning on taking us back to the Peanut days. We see all the time how the peanut is still uninformed and wants to put his 2cents and spin on everything. A vote for a 3 party is a vote for Oboma. Think real hard before you put a left leaning liberal in the WH.
McCain is a terrible public speaker
Obama is one of the best public speakers since Reagan, and is making McCain look like George W. Bush II. You would think these public servants would get better coaching - it's not that hard. McCain also has a bad habit of making gaffes in public. It reinforces the stereotype of his age. This race will be another Nixon vs. Kennedy image contest which McCain will lose.
to Rowly
I appreciate your earnest attitude on this.
I've thought a lot about it. My conclusion is that we are stuck in a two-party dominant system for now, and the GOP is the only realistic vehicle to get large numbers of conservative (limited government) lawmakers, executives, and judges into power.
But the GOP has severely lost its way, and as long as they keep getting re-elected, the will not see their drift to the left (big government) as a problem that needs solving.
If McCain is elected, we face more years of out-of-control government growth and the erosion of our freedom while the GOP congress does whatever he wants (like under Bush)
McCain losing a few red states to BHO due to a large vote for a limited-government 3rd party would be just the message the GOP needs to get -the votes would not be wasted.
Either way (McCain, BHO, or HRC) we're screwed in the short term. Let's make sure it's not the long term as well.
McCain Is Still For Amnesty
John McCain has not changed his mind about "Comprehensive Immigration Reform", amnesty, at all.
http://townhall.com/columnists/AmandaCarpenter/2008/03/28/b loggers_press_mccain_adviser_on_immigration
“John McCain’s position on immigration is very clear and this a question that gets asked at townhall appearances everyday in media appearances and has answered the question at least a thousand times before the New Hampshire primary,” Schmidt said.
He explained, “Any person who supports John McCain’s campaigns is a subscriber to John McCain’s views"
A vote for McCain is a vote for surrender of your country.
Your vote for McCain will be used as proof that you want amnesty.
Many of us see another amnesty as the end of the Republic, the stampede it will set off will be overwhelming. If we don't stop the inundation none of the rest matters. We'll be a banana republic before the jihadis can get us. There will never be another GOP president or Congressional majority. Importing voters for the socialists is as stupid as it gets.
McCain keeps saying "Secure the border first". We know that he means amnesty next. The plan is to get the border state Gov's to declare the border secure. Conveniently, they are all on board the cheap labor express. Then his good friend Ted Kennedy will bring back McCain/Kennedy and McCain can provide his good friends across the aisle with their new permanent majority.
I will not vote for amnesty.
A Vote For McCain Is A Vote For Amnesty
The RNC has managed to nominate the author of the last TWO amnesty bill. They wanted to make sure that we who oppose amnesty would not have any choice in this election. We do have the option of voting third party or a write in. I intend to exercise that option. The argument that it is cutting off our nose to spite our face does not hold water. If the nose has a cancerous tumor the size of a RINO horn that will kill the patient, the prudent thing to do IS to cut it off. I do not have to vote for the guy who's telling me he will stab me in the back if elected.
more on 3rd parties
Also remember that Carter gave us Reagan, and Clinton gave us the 1994 Rep Revolution.
Clinton was Prez during the cold war - he botched almost everything he touched, but we made it through. I know we're still dealing with his legacy in Iran, but I believe there were going to be serious problems there no matter what we did.
Clinton is a particularly good example - Bush Sr betrayed conservatives (like Jr has - other than on national defense - and like McCain will continue to do). That allowed Perot to run as a spoiler in 1992 to give us Clinton. Gingrich and the GOP figured out what the deal was, and gave conservatism as good a try as its had since Reagan.
oh - and about the speaches
I don't give a rip if my guy can give speaches or not. I'm concerned about his love for freedom and our constitution.
A lot of what Bush has done bothers me, but I'm amused with his mistakes in speaking - all it does is keep his political enemies thinking he's stupid (which he's not) and getting off-topic.
I'm more concerned with stuff like his signing of McCain-Feingold, NCLB, Medicaire Prescription benefit, and massive growth in domestic spending.
Dear John...
Do you realize that Not drilling for domestic Oil will end the American dream for most of our Nation? Do you realize most American voters believe gasoline prices and jobs are Far more important than your national security agenda? And is it even possible for you to realize that conservatives are bypassing your ballot in favor of a 2012 match-up against Barack Obama?
Do not think that Hillary's ouster will put White Women voters in your pocket? Most White women are saying the same thing... "I don't plan on voting for either one."
It's the economy stupid! You are out of touch!
Why does this surprise anyone?
Ratas & Ratones,
Novak is a moderate weenie slime who remained silent for two years while Fitzgerald thoroughly abused the powers of the Special Proseocutor's office, put Rove through the wringer (four appearances before a Grand Jury) and railroaded Libbey. All the while both Novak and Fitzgerald knew it was Armitage who 'leaked' Plame's CIA status and Novak who blabbed it to the public because both of them opposed the Iraq war.
Bobzmcishl,
Bush was not nearly as bad as McCain is. Go back and watch a film of Bush's acceptance speech at the '04 convention. It was excellent. Bush does not have the wit and charm of Reagan, and he has made some terrible blunders (duct tape comes to mind), but he didn't finish 5th from the bottom of his class and he is not the egoistic, vindictive, purely political animal that McCain is. I despise McCain and I admire Bush, such is the difference in the character and motivation of these two men.
chris,
Your post is spot on. Rush Limbaugh argues that a 3rd party attempt at this late date would ensure an Obama Presidency. Like you said, the question is not whether we're screwed in the short term, but in the long term.
In 1992 Perot's 3rd party gave the Presidency to an undeserving and incompetent Bill Clinton. Two years later the Republicans won Congress in an unprecedented reversal that demonstrated the public's revulsion with Clinton's mendacity. But Slick Willie changed course and won a second term, and 16 years after Perot we are, as you so aptly put it, "screwed".
Will a 3rd party give us 8 years of Obama? I can't abide that.
abiding 8 years of obama
Obama looks much more like a Carter than a Clinton from my perspective. Bill was liberal, but very pragmatic. BHO seems like a hard-core ideolog.
If BHO is elected the country will be ripe for "change we can believe in" by 2012.
As long as we don't run another McCain or Dole the GOP should have no trouble.
I'm thinking Jindal, assuming he's able to improve the mess that is LA politics.
Side note -
I just realized something. I have voted for a four-letter word for President every single time I've voted (too young to vote Reagan), and this year will be no excception:
Bush Dole Bush Bush Barr
Clinton, Emmanuel, Jindal, etc ...
... forget BILLARY Clinton for either Supreme Court or Secretary of State.
She'll be secretary of Health and Human Services, and Colin Powell will be Secretary of State.
Bobby Jindal will make a GREAT VP. He's a staunch conservative, but he may be too young.
my other picks for VP for McCain?
Fred Thompson and Charlie Crist.
Nerous Nellies
If McCain's advisers think their guy is going to win an oratory contest with Barak Obama then they have another thing coming. But he doesnt have to. I heard both speeches. McCain laid out a series of positions on the issues which were fairly specific and addressed what he would do about problems that confront our country. Obama's well-delivered stump speech was the same vague pablum that he's been spooning up for months now and which didnt save him from being clobbered in state after state by the unlikable squawking crow of a Clinton. In this political year where nothing that was supposed to happen has happened I would almost venture to say that McCain is looking like the smarter bet to win.
John McCain's Negatives
Don't any of you think I haven't worried long and hard about our choices for the next four years.I did not come to this conclusion easily.
I know of no one who is more conservative than myself.Anyone who reads my posts know that.
I was the most adamant about the way McCain was chosen.Not by us,but by the MSM,Democrats,moderates,etc.It was well known who chose him.
If Barach Hussein Obama is president,with a Democrat congress,two or three picks to SCOTUS,we are like rats on a sinking ship,and sink,we will.
Besides more give-away programs like reparations,UN control of this country and loss of free speech,the Fairness Doctrine will be passed and all conservative voices will be shut down.
How in Hades do we get the conservative message out then? You tell me.
If Obama is president,you can kiss 2012 goodbye.He and the Liberals will have a knife at our throats and a boot on our chests.
But go ahead and lick your wounds and wait till 2012. Teach McCain a lesson. Problem we will ALL suffer for that folly.
speech delivery is not...
a huge concern for me but content is. McCain's speech in Kenner, LA was sophomoric in content. The constant repeat of "that's not change we can believe in" followed by a little chuckle would have been ok maybe once at the beginning and once at the end but the constant repetition just made it seem more contrived. I have heard better content coming from valedictory speeches at high school graduations.
So many think that McCain will win just because BHO is so far left liberal. That may have been true in the past but I am none too sure about this time around.
Whoever is elected in Nov., as has been pointed out by many other posters, the next 4 years are going to be a long, dark night for liberty loving Americans.
It seems as though our own government is doing everything in it's power to destroy what is left of our representative republic before our terrorist enemies can.
Congress has an unquenchable thirst for money and evidently they think there is a bottomless pit of it in taxpayer's pockets. With every new tax scheme they are taking away our liberty and our ability to live our own lives responsibly.
The American taxpayer is the only source of funds (other than borrowed money from China and elsewhere) so you would think that instead of punishing productive individuals and businesses that they would be doing everything possible to insure the success of those paying the bills. Instead they continue to regulate and limit and destroy the source of their own bread and butter.
I used to believe that elected representatives were for the most part honorable people doing the work the people sent them to do, wisely and responsibly. Silly me, now I know that is not the case.
This has been made clear over the last year and the many times the people have spoken so loudly and clearly that Congress was prevented from passing it no matter how many times they tried to sneak amnesty for illegals through.
chris
I like Barr also. I couldn't agree more with your posts. It is a long term vs short term decision and McCain is not the guy if we want to change the direction of this country and especially the direction of the republican party. A vote for McCain is a fear vote against Obama, a terrible reason for casting a ballot, or a vote is support of the liberalization (read fascist) of the republican party.
Look at Europe. That is the path we are on. Two parties with the exact same platform. A recipe for disaster. That is the most important thing in this election imo. Far more important than any specific communist policy supported by Obama or McCain. Cap and trade schemes to combat global warming is a far larger danger to the future of this country then the war against islamofascism. Europe is dead. It will be an islamic continent within thirty years. Read Mark Steyn's book. Numbers do not lie. A bloodless takeover thanks to the nanny state and multi culti feed goodism.
They will never beat us militarily but, they do not have to if we follow the European socialist model like Obama and McCain want to and way too many in both parties.
Robert Novak
writes, "The two most senior Democratic senators, Robert Byrd and Edward M. Kennedy, were not present for the vote because of illness. Warner and Domenici gave them "live pairs" -- not voting in order to negate the absence of the Democrats. If Sen. John McCain (the only absent Republican) had been there and Warner and Domenici had voted, the budget would have failed on a 48 to 48 tie."
That is where our party is. So courteous. So accommodating. If we do not penalize the republican party for moving left, then you have no one to blame but yourself when they continue to do so.
Jindal for VP
McCain-Jindal brings the best of the three strongest elements of the party together: the ideological social conservatives (i.e., those who understand that human capital and the context in which it develops, the family and the institutions that support it, are the important assets in any society and must, therefore, be protected and nurtured), the ideologically oriented fiscal conservatives (i.e., those who understand that low taxes and free markets are foundational to the American way of life), and the "get-it-done" pragmatists (i.e., those who have the know-how to put the ideas of the social and fiscale conservatives into action). Read more at my blog...
Farmer's Wife...
Well put! Dark days are ahead for liberty. Those days have started at the Gas pump. American Buying-power is drying up. The "American-consumer" feels like a duck in an Persian Gulf shooting gallery.
McCain is blind, absolutely blind, if he cannot read the writing on the wall. Without a major policy shift, McCain will make a Much Much Worse President than Obama. He will side with Liberals in Congress every time, leaving the blame of economic collapse heaped upon the Republican Party, and Conservatives in particular.
Which Party do we want to hold the White House when unemployment crosses 10% next year, and wages swirl down the toilet?
McCain,the right candiate?
I did exactly what I always told my kids not to do, make a decision about a person before you get to know who and what they are. The hr long interview Shawn Hannity had with Senator McCain showed me a man with humility, honesty, a love for our country, someone who knows and appreciates our military. I don't agree with him 100% of the time but I can guarantee I disagre 100% of the time with Senator Obama. Ask your self do you want our next president to be some one that is the most left liberal in Congress? Someone who can listen to the racist rant for 20 years? Someone who has no respect for the military and who believes terror is just a bumper sticker for President Bush? Someone who wants to raise taxes, every kind of tax and I am sure some new ones? A vote for a 3rd party is that kind of vote. Think hard about who you will vote for, the Supreme Court has finally made a small turn toward sanity, can you imagine Supreme Court Justice Hillary,or someother radical left leaning judge.
VP is meaningless
How effective has Cheney been in reigning in Bush's innate "compassionate conservatism" (read "liberalism")?
Not at all. It's a meaningless post, good only if the Top Dog dies.
McRINO and Obambi differ only on Iraq and taxes; other than that they agree on all the major issues, varying only on matters of degree.
The election of McRINO means the continuation of the Californiation of the country. He HIMSELF has proclaimed that he represents the "redefinition" of the GOP and "conservatism".
Conservatism doesn't need "redefinition"; it needs advocates and believers.
Rowley, Farmers Wife
Can't disagree with either of you.
Rowley, I'm still not totally there with you,
I'm doing a lot of thinking and praying. The one thing all of us must consider are the troops. Will our bailing out on them by either sitting it out, or third party (or perish the thought, crossing over to the dark side) help them? I do believe that an Obama win will encourage the terrorists, and all H will break lose on our troops before he ever gets them out,
IF he does. Who knows, what his real intent is?
Considering his family background.
McCain looked wierd, pasty faced, reminded me of Nixon in the debate with JFK. And that
smile, was wierd...I know could be due to the disfiguring he got from the melanoma surgery.
Did anyone else get the same feeling I did.
I didn't think he looked well.
Supreme Court issue is also meaningless
The two Justices most likely to retire are Ginsburg and Stevens, the two oldest and most liberal members.
Two liberals get replaced with two OTHER liberals; so what?
Further, SCOTUS appointments are always a crapshoot at best; O'Conner and Souter were both appointed by Republicans.
Further, here's McCain:
On Ginsburg: "Highly qualified"
On Alito: "Wears his conservatism on his sleeve" (meant as an insult)
Claims he'd appoint Originalist Justices, which by definiton are exactly the type who'd find McCain-Feingold unconstitutional, legislation he still considers his signature legacy. How likely is THAT?
Last year, in Wisconsin Right To Life v. FEC, McCain filed an amicus brief supporting the FEC. Fortunately, SCOTUS held for WRTL, partially dismantling McCain-Feingold.
I don't believe him for one second.
Sam & Chris are right
These candidates and parties have nothing for the USA. The Dems and Repubs both are leading us toward destruction. Vote for a a good third party conservative candidate that is not an incumbent at every level. This may not change the outcome but it may wake up the parties as right now they are not listening.
Robert...
Enjoy it while you can...you will be deleted soon,but not soon enough for me. I would love it if you were erased permanently.
You are so transparent. Nothing there. Just a make-believe resume and a penchant for grandiosity.You are so pathetic.
A socialist wannabe who comes here pretending to want McCain. We know who you like ...Obama,the pretender. You deserve each other.
TeaParty, no he didn't...
look well. But then he has always appeared frail looking to me.
I am very torn and have not made a decision as to how I will vote. I am not convinced that McCain can beat BHO even if conservatives hold their noses again.
I do know that if he does get the conservative vote and does win, he will see it as a mandate and think he has our approval for all his plans to take us further down the road to socialism.
We need to learn to use all avenues available to continue making our voices heard. NumbersUSA has been an invaluable tool in the past year. The American Conservative Union also offers ways of communicating with government on a whole host of issues as does the American Solutions website.
Becoming politically pro-active is a must if we are to have any chance at all of halting the left and correcting the course government has taken.
Beware
Fellow Republicans:
Beware of the organized disinformation and propaganda campaigns that the Dems have been waging for some time now. Some of the posts on TH and similar sites, as well as some of the folks who call in to conservative talk radio shows, that beat the "McAmnesty", "RINO", and "there's no difference between the two parties" drums are intended to drive a wedge between voters and the Republican party leadership. In fact, the Dems are probably paying people to do these posts (guerilla marketing).
Don't fall for it. The only way Obama can win is if conservatives disengage.
Novak, retire and get a life
Talk about meaningless nonsense. This column could easily have come from an empty headed first year journalism student trying to finish an assignment at 3:00 in the morning.
Mr. Novak, you have written very little of substance for a long time now. I guess your only real claim to fame was writing about Valerie Plame, which was a ploy on your part to gain some air time. Any bona fide, respectable journalist would have steered clear of mentioning any CIA employee by name without substantial research first.
Get a life. And quit cranking out sophomoric columns with no content.
F/S
Re public speaking abilities: it's a question of Form over Substance, in't. Problem is, substance is often lacking also.
As for how Obama will perform in debates: He will do what all Dems do, regurgitate practiced talking points whether or not they are on topic. Didn't you watch the Dem primary "debates"? What a joke. McCain at least attempts to address the questions and is criticized because his responses aren't polished. Back to form over substance...
81% of Americans support greater...
use of domestic energy resources.
The nationwide telephone survey of 1,000 adults was fielded May 29 – June1, 2008 at a Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) phone facility using live callers. The sample was drawn utilizing a Random Digit Dial (RDD) methodology. Sampling controls were used to ensure that a proportional and representative number of adults were interviewed according to the latest demographic figures available from the United States Census. The margin of error is calculated at +/- 3.1% at the 95% confidence level. Margins of error for subgroups are higher.
The complete survey analysis is available for free at http://www.AmericanSolutions.com/EnergySecurity.
I am a part of the 81%, hardly a minority.
McCain does not support increased domestic energy use and instead wants to make CO2 a commodity to be bought, sold and traded and limited by government, which amounts to the largest attempt at restructuring the economy since the 1930s. Looks like McCain sides with a minority of Americans on this issue.
Darby, that's paranoia
Your assertion is necessarily predicated on the idea that the GOP is still enjoying its usual strong support, and the facts and figures simply don't bear that out. The most recent poll numbers indicate Bush's support is now down to a record-setting low of 28%. How could it possibly be that low if real conservatives were still supporting him?
Why are GOP fund-raising efforts failing so badly?
Why did the GOP manage to lose BOTH houses of Congress in a single election in 2006? Which in fact mirrored the Democrat's loss of 1994.
Why does GOP registration keep falling as a percentage of the registered electorate while the Dems stays the same and "independant" keeps increasing?
The plain fact is that conservatives are in revolt, in huge numbers.
Disconnected Dem Of The Week –
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA)…
This week the California Democrat was enraged by Republican efforts to carefully examine the future costs of a late-arriving version of the Climate Tax Bill. Instead of working to relieve the energy crisis, Boxer was attacking Republicans and attempting to push through a plan that would make matters worse. Her proposed legislation would devastate our economy without any proof that it would help the world’s climate. This act of duplicity proved that Democrats are completely out of touch, and demonstrated once again they will do or say whatever it takes to push their liberal agenda through the Senate.
I never said we don't need alternative energy sources. Those still are being developed and I have no doubt that American ingenuity if allowed to work will bring forth solutions.
In the meantime, American consumers need relief at the pump, in the grocery store and for everything else that is adversely affected by the high cost of imported oil. Using our own is simply a matter of common sense.
in #41 BrianR writes "VP is meaningless ... good only if the Top Dog dies."
The only value is that the VP will have an excellent shot at the Presidency one day.
"... How effective has Cheney been in reigning in Bush's innate 'compassionate conservatism'"
Cheney is the VP because he's completely on the same page as Bush.
in #44 BrianR continues, "Supreme Court issue is also meaningless..."
I totally agree with that post. We've got Alito, Roberts, Scalia and Thomas from Republicans, but we've also had O'Conner, Souter, Kennedy and Stevens from Republicans. With a Dem congress and McCain's disdain for limited government I completely expect choices like the latter group from him, not the former.
in $47 Robert writes "McCain ... he is a great ideological mesh to the rest of the country ... You radical righties have had your time..."
No, we haven't had our time since Bush took office. You might argue we had it with Reagan (but he had a Dem congress) or with the Rep Congress from 1995 - 2000 (but with a Dem in the white house). Bush - after running as a conservative in 2000 - has been a big-spending populist, not a conservative.
King Lib, great points
First, thanks for the kind words; I appreciate them coming from my favorite -- and the most rational here -- lib.
First, McCain himself has boasted that he's "redefining" conservatism and the GOP. Sounds a lot like the same self-proclamation Schwarzenegger made, and that's why I constantly point to California as the destination to which THAT path leads.
And, like you, I question how many in the GOP rank-and-file still support Bush. I mean, let's face it, how many can there possibly be when he only has a 28% approval rating? When 60%+ of the country thinks we're heading down the wrong road?
What the hell's Rove smoking? These guys have their heads buried so firmly in the sand only their tail feathers are visible.
Rowly, Chris, et al
Back when, I messed around with third parties and candidates thereof. I think this has given me a decent perspective on what they can and cannot do.
I regret all the laws that restrict ballot access. I want every flake and fool to have their very own party and add to the list of parties every two years. That way, the idiotarian vote will get properly diffused and stay that way. In the meantime, we have to go with what we have got.
Third parties are extremely personality dependent. Bob Barr does have the type of personality that can score important points if he ever gets aimed in the right direction.
The type of conflict we are currently in can be resolved in our favor "Over There" only if we sustain that effort by having less government "Right Here". It is a theo-cultural struggle between volitional endeavor and prior restraints. The more of the latter we put on ourselves, the more we aid and abet
those who would destroy us.
If Barr campaigns on winning the war through less government and attacks McCain as a wet-behind-the-ears butterbar who would not make a pimple on a Chief Petty Officer's posterior, then Barr will help shape attitudes that benefit the country as a whole.
If on the other hand, Barr adopts the more traditional rightist position of "command isolationism" (same thing as "command economy")
then he does the opposite.
The former approach will help McCain if he takes the heat like a gentleman who is willing to take all necessary corrective action. And it will leave Obama, elected or otherwise, in a weakened position as he will be seen as advocting defeat abroad so as to have disaster as home.
So the ball is in Barr's court. Wish I knew sombebody who could get his attention.
Chris, minor point
Actually, when he was a Congressman, Cheney was a conservative icon. I suspect he's been keeping a low profile to distance himself from being painted with the Bush Brush".
As to the VEEP being positioned to become future President, that historically doesn't work out. Edwards, Gore, Kemp, Quayle, Bentsen, Humphrey, Ford, Ferraro... all were VPs or VP candidates, and none came anywhere near the Presidency.
The only exceptions I can think of in recent history are Nixon, VP under Ike; and LBJ, VP under JFK.
Darby, you and the GOP leadership keep telling yourselves that and see what happens in November.
I have never voted for a Democrat in my life & am not about to start now. I'm a conservative/libertarian first and a Republican second. In the last 6 years the GOP has gone and joined the Dems on everything except national defense (which I appreciate), and I am fed up. You've got it backwards to suggest this means I'm working for the Democrats - its the GOP that has turned into Dem-Lite. I'd love to go through the details with you if you want to try to refute me.
Ooops!
I left out Bush 1, as Reagan 3.
Of course, when he ran as his own neo-con self, he then lost.
If refiners were free to offer long-term (30-35 year) non-breakable contracts to buy any and all domestic oil at $80 to $90 a barrel, we would be running surplus in fairly short order. In fact, some of the boys would be paid to keep the oil in the ground, like when the Railroad Commission used to limit production.
This would lower our own cost of living while reducing the funding available to terrorists. A good example of what I mean when I say that we win this war by having less government at home.
AnOther R.D. Novak mistake
Bod, what is your problem with staying to the story you headlined.
Your article was to be about McCain, an drifted to BO, the DNC, Hillary and everyone else.
John McCain is fine and will do well in the fall elections.
His opponent must prove he would be just another Bush term, and there is no Republican Politician running that would sink his chances to be elected by doing that.
Ex-Wyo, here's the problem
with what you've written. BTW, I certainly appreciate your ardor for your candidate. Nothing wrong with that.
But we heard all the same things when Clinton was running against Bush 1. The world was going to end.
In reality, what happened was that the GOP found its principles -- and backbone -- and in the next mid-terms took both houses of Congress, essentially gelding the guy (obviously, only politically) for the rest of his administration.
I'll put my money on that -- and maybe a conservative GOP offering in 2012 -- over the liberal policies Mr. "Reach-Across-The-Aisle" McCain will be putting in place with NO opposition from his fellow (R)s.
I occasionally listen to a talk show host from Atlanta. Neil Boortz. I was a loyal listener until several months ago. He is funny,opinionated and I often do not agree with him,but listened,anyway.
Before the last election when we gave up the ghost and lost both houses,he was on a tear.Every day,he railed at the Republicans because of spending,etc.They deserved it,too.
His mantra was...'the Republicans deserve to lose,so they will learn their lesson'. Said he would not vote for any of them anymore. Urged others to do the same. Just stay home.
This went on for months.Over and over. Then,when he saw they were losing,he said he did vote Republican. No mention about how many numb-brains he caused to not vote at all.
Some naive people listen to the pundits to get their information and it is often wrong-headed.I blame people who have influence for getting the wrong message out.
I e-mailed him several times before and after the election ,saying that I thought he contributed to the loss.He never responded,nor mentioned it.
The old saying 'I'd rather have the devil we know,than the devil we don't know',applies to MCCain and Obama,in my book.
FDR's America
in #80 ex-Wyomingite writes "... Do you all remember FDR? You're still living in FDR's America..."
Agreed - I think FDR was every bit as liberal as BHO. He just started with a relatively limted government.
My problem with McCain is that on domestic issues, he would be another FDR. And if he wins the GOPs in congress will just go along with him, as they have with Bush Jr.
If BHO wins - AND if it is OBVIOUS that it was because conservatives have revolted - the GOP will fight Obama's moves to the left. I just hope there's enough GOP left in the senate to do it. As I've said, I think we're screwed either way in the short term.
Oh - no way BHO gets re-elected president one time - let alone three.
enough of the obama fear tactics
For any of Obama's agenda to get through, it needs to pass Congress.
How about the McCainiacs encouraging those of us Republicans who would sooner be hanged than to vote for John McCain accept the reality that our conscience would never allow us to vote for that man, and that some of us believe that we will actually have WORSE government under McCain than Obama because under McCain the Republicans in Congress will be pressured to side with the McCain/Democrat agenda, while with Obama in the White House the Republicans in Congress will be free to start acting like Republicans again, since the hijacking of the party by the Bush/McCain nonconservatives will have finally been overturned.
Furthermore, Obama is likely to govern on a lot more moderate agenda than one might expect. Yes he has the most liberal voting record in the Senate, but he is also highly intelligent. I think he is smart enough to know that if he tries to put the agenda through a President that he has been supporting as Senator then his Presidency will be a failed on.
Furthermore, we are headed for Great Depression II. Do you want a Republican at the helm when our economy suffers the biggest depression in our history?
No, if you believe in Republican principles, and if you are intelligent enough, you will recognize that the only hope for the future is for McCain to lose in November.
lay off Novak
I don't understand the problem you guys have with Novak. He is what he is, and hasn't claimed to be anything different.
Butcher (#81) - Novak almost always jumps around to many unrelated topics in his columns. He's basically a political gossip column.
So what's the problem? Even if he doesn't share our point of view, he brings out inside information that might not have otherwise seen the light.
Mistakes
We are going to see the terms "mistake" and "McCain" a lot this campaign. Sure wish the Republicans had decided to run a candidate this election season.
so forget about McCain
Forget about trying to elect McCain.
Let's focus on electing Republicans in November.
That means elect Republicans to Congress.
For those of us who think McCain is a horrible candidate, for God's sake don't stay home. Do what you will in the Presidential race (I'm not sure how I will vote, except I know I will not vote for McCain), but vote for Republicans for House and Senate.
Of course, I am talking about real Republicans.
There are no doubt going to be a few congressional races where the Democratic candidate stands up better for Republican principles than the Republican candidate does.
So, in summary, go out and vote, and vote for the best candidates.
at some point it would behoove..
both Republican and Democrat voters to come together on one thing and that is the economy that we all must deal with. I know that we will never be on the same page on social issues and that is ok, we can have those battles.
When it comes to everyday financial well being all of us are facing the same exact problems. I assume and mind you I don't know for sure but assume that even financially successful Democrats apply some conservative principles when it comes to making the most of what they earn to meet the needs of their families.
When there is too much month at the end of the money it can be traced to either the unwise use of what is available or to that of too much government intrusion.
McCain
Why would Bobby Jindal be second fiddle on a losing ticket? He's smarter than that. He has very conservative core principles, which is why he won decisively in Louisiana - a notoriously corrupt democrat stronghold.
McCain has no core principles and is easily maleable. He's already bought into the global warming hoax and is spouting more socialist propaganda than Canada, England, Sweden and Obama combined.
It really makes no difference whom he chooses as a running mate because he will lose in a landslide unless he changes his tune.
Capitalism and conservatism works every time it's tried.
the speeches
I heard McCain's speech on the radio and saw Obama's on TV.
I agree with the assessment that it appears everyone has come to that McCain did a lousy job.
One thing that I thought was foolish was that because it was the day that Obama clinched, it was a day for him to come across as a statesman in his speech. McCain should have recognized that was the mood of the day and delivered a "statesman" type speech instead of a partisan one.
But of course the bigger problem was simply that the content of the speech itself was weak, and he did a lousy job of delivering it.
My hunch is that Obama is going to clean McCain's clock.
McCain's advantage is experience, but the #1 issue will be the economy, and I don't think McCain is going to be able to convince anyone that he has any better clue about the economy than Obama does. McCain has no background in it.
Now that might actually be an asset because I think McCain's biggest problems is that on areas where he has a lot of experience (e.g. foreign policy and immigration) he tends to be dead wrong, but because of his experience and his inability to learn from experience, he will take us over the cliff come hell or high water.
Obama might just have enough hesitation about being a know-it-all that he might hesitate when we're at the precipice.
Jindal
I completely concur, Bobby Jindal is an incredible leader and the last thing I would like to see is his political future tainted by being associated with a McCain presidency.
If there were a McCain/Jindal ticket and it loses in November, I think Jindal could come out fairly unscathed and still live up to his potential in the future.
However, if we had a McCain/Jindal ticket and it won in November, Jindal would forever be tained with having been the #2 man in a failed presidency, just as most everyone who has served in the Bush administration is now damaged goods.
Farmer's Wife
Democrats will do nothing to aid the economy as long as there is any chance Bush will get any credit for it.
There is nothing that would aid the economy more than lower gas prices and less dependency on foreign oil.They could start that ball rolling ASAP,if they wanted to.They do not.
Dear King Liberal
You need to define your terms.
What is the far right?
I heard Rush also.
He was making the point to McCain that George is not as unpopular as McCain thinks. That McCain's strategy may end up backfiring. Many of us hold to the tradition that it isn't respectful to the office.
McCain has always reached out to what he believes are the moderates.
In my opinion moderates are people that lack courage and unwilling to do the homework to decide what they believe.
If believing that everyone should pull their own weight, obey the law and commandments laid out in Holy Scripture, love God, family and country, Proud to fly the flag, respectful to elders, believer in private property, capitalism, low taxes and minding my own business .... is extreme then I guess my great grandparents were radicals. We true conservatives will never budge because what is right is eternally right.
A reason to vote.
I did what I always told my kids not to do, I made a judgment about someone before I took time to learn what he was about.SH interviewed Senator McCain for an hr,what I saw was a man who loves America, knows the value of our military. No I don't agree with him 100% of the time but I can guarantee I disagree 100% of the time with the liberal left Senator Obama. Voting a 3rd party is a vote to put a tax hungry leftie in power where he can apoint judges, and we have seen for many years what happens when a liberal judge is on the bench! It might be a vote for the lesser of 2 evils, but I sure don't want to have to depend on a liberal left person for my safety!
Future SCOTUS?
"White was a middle
Are you saying the recent Democrat 'ploy' about filling a SCOTUS seat with a like-minded, same sex, etc as the Justice retiring (ala Sandra Day O'Connor) didn't apply when Clinton appointed Ginsberg?
Not even by political leanings!!!
A "middle of the road" (moderate) Black man, replaced by an "extreme leftist" (uber-liberal) white woman?
How did Clinton ever get the title "First Black Prsident" making decisions like that anyway?
As for Hillary being nominated (and appointed if the Dems get their anticipated 60 plus seats) to SCOTUS - it would serve to fulfill her lifelong dream of tearing apart the US Constitution to a degree even the SHE-BEAST wouldn't be able to accomplish as President.
Her "deal" with Obama & the Dem Leadership had to have something along these lines as incentive for Hillary to cave in.
RE: Chris
Great posts today! Thanks.
moderation is a good thing...
if you are counting calories in an effort to loose weight, or enjoying a drink or two at the end of the day or enjoy being out in the sunshine.
When it comes to things that are of real importance and necessary for survival moderation will not work. Strong conviction and focus based on tried and true principles and unwaivering application of them is what has always worked for individuals in attaining personal goals and has worked for this nation as it was founded. It has in it's short existence, compared to other governments, given it's citizens the liberty to make the most of all the opportunities we have had.
Government has been slowly and patiently usurping that liberty and limiting the ingenuity that brought us to super power status. At a critical time for America, Democrats and some Republicans (McCain in particular) in Congress can think of no better way to help than to implement the most egregious and oppressive tax scheme in American history, all in the name of saving the planet.
Even if you believe the planet does need saving and that their solution is somehow realistic, my question isthis, what are they saving it for? It certainly is not for the continued liberty of American citizens!
The best way out of a difficulty is through it.
Jindal
Elvis,
I agree we don't know Jindal well enough yet.
He was only a House Rep for a couple of years, and has been governor for five months. I'd like to see him finish at least one term as governor, and assuming he still looks good, run for POTUS in 2012.
If he becomes corrupt, liberal, or wussy? too bad, pick someone else.
I will say this - almost all of the negative stuff I've read about Jindal so far has been from socialist sources. Most of their negative stuff sounds positive to me, and I'm taking the rest with a grain of salt at this point.
No one is perfect. I was fully prepared to hold my nose and vote for Guiliani, Romney or Huckabee this year, and I liked Thompson a lot. Jindal looks way better than any of those guys. I hope we get the chance to find out for sure.
McCain's VP?
So, McCain is benign and boring, sucks outside townhall meetings, and needs a nationally-known, smart, charismatic personality who is just as talented as Obama on stage in packed houses. Oh, and who happens to have 20+million feverish loyalists, ready to go door-to-door for McCain, in his back pocket. Gee, who could that dream-mate be? If McCain misses Huckabee on this, I'll go with Barr. Forget the next 4 years. I won't care.
ex-Wyomingite
Actually, Barr will probably get my vote, not Obama. I know to many like yourself, the practical affect is for Obama but, that is the problem with our politics and I, for one, am voting to help change that.
Btw, my wife already cancels me out in every election. I will continue to cast ballots for James Inhofe, Tom Coburn, and Tom Cole for as long as they wish to represent me in that hellhole in DC.
Don't believe anything McCain says
McCain is a terrible candidate. He looks like milk toast and has the posture of an old man. He appears to be doddering and has a hard time reading his teleprompter.
He refuses to be forceful when criticizing his opponent, I suppose, saving his anger for conservatives. He has used the "my friends" phrase so often it reminds Republicans that they are not really included in that greeting. McCain doesn’t seem to like conservative Republicans, possibly because I don't know a single Republican who would walk two blocks to hear him speak.
If McCain wins (a miracle), he'll ditch his obvious imitation of being a Republican and continue behaving like a liberal. Offending Republicans is how he made himself a Media Darling for years. You can't trust what he says. He gained the nomination by lying about amnesty. The only way McCain will truly act like a Republican is when his poll numbers are so low he will be forced to put in writing the conservative principles he intends to follow.
Did anyone else notice McCains speech?
Fox,CNN and MSNBC all carried it live on Tuesday but McCain did not time his speech to finish before the SD polls closed which win or lose Obama was going over the top.Fox stayed but CNN and MSNBC cut away to declare Obama the first Black candidate to win a major party nomination. This is a huge story even if you don't like him.That McCain's people did not plan for this shows that they don't know simple TV coverage basics.And God was he dull as hell.
The GOP did not nominate McCain. It was Dem's and Indi's in cross voting open primaries.
#10: At least McCain's first action in office will not be to surrender the country to the terrorists like Hussein will, since he is one.
Tea Party #36: Hussein wants the troops to go thru hell before he pulls them out, because he is one of the devil-worshipping terrorist who will put them thru Hell.
If we would have been drilling our own oil all along, we would have all we need now. Along with this, if all the destructive taxes had been eliminated, we would have all the alternate energy sources that were prevented by government's taking half the operating capitol of all our businesses and industries every year since WWII.
Lower gas prices
Eliminate the 18.4 cents per gallon federal pump tax, and the 32 cents per gallon, PA State pump tax. Eliminate all the other taxes in existence, on all levels of government, which add up to one-third (1/3) of the price – of everything.
You could greatly reduce the price by writing a law which declares that ALL OFFSHORE OIL BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and hiring the oil companies to drill, pump, refine, and deliver all petroleum products to us for the cost of processing plus 10 cents per gallon profit.
This would eliminate the foreign nations’ price per barrel, the speculators’ add-on charge, the oil-tanker-ship charge, the oil spills when the tanker ships run aground, and the clean-up cost thereof. This would reduce the price for refined petroleum to well under a dollar a gallon, and make us independent of the Arabs and all other oil-selling peoples.
You could also reduce the price by no longer wasting our oil and wasting our food supply by diluting our gasoline with alcohol and making it inefficient. Gasoline provides energy by exploding in the engine, while alcohol burns and does not explode, providing no energy.
"if he does get the conservative vote and does win, he will see it as a mandate and think he has our approval for all his plans to take us further down the road to socialism."
On the flip side, the hard left will also see an Obama victory as approval. With a hard liberal POTUS married to a liberal senate and congress, it's all over. Remember the many amnesties we defeated? That would not be possible in a full blown lib take-over. If a Repub is POTUS, that might damper the full liberal agenda and dems might try to go more center to appease middle America the way Hillary did after seeing all dems tossed and replaced with repubs.
The liberal repubs were then thrown out and conservative dems voted in...who were actually closet libs. Just smart enough to campaign on a conservative platform. The newly seated dems did WORSE than what the repubs did. Yet more are being voted in, which sends the signal that America is more liberal than conservative.
We have a lot to think about.
here is your answer:
We the people pay all taxes, and we are the sole ultimate source of all tax revenue. Regardless where government initially collects the money, all tax money ultimately comes from us, the people, even though business has to pay thousands or millions of dollars at one time, and get it back from us one dollar at a time.
Since we the people are the one and only source of all tax revenue:
There should be only one tax to collect all tax revenue.
It should be a single, simple, fair, direct, graduated, individual, full-income tax levied on living persons for each level of government: One Tax and Done.
The best thing that government can do to help the country, the people, and even government, is to repeal all of the many hundreds, or thousands of existing taxes, fees, and charges. These taxes are the federal deficit. These taxes are the high price of everything. These tax eliminations are spending cuts. Every tax that is eliminated is a tax that we the people no longer have to pay. These taxes are the difference between the price we pay for health care and everything else, and the price we would pay if these taxes were repealed. Eliminating these taxes will remove them from the price paid for everything by everyone, including government.
One Tax and Done will provide many benefits to all, even government:
One Tax and Done will end government-caused recessions because governments would cut off their only source of tax revenue.
One Tax and Done will stop reductions in tax revenue because people reduced their use of water, sewage, and other governmental services.
One Tax and Done will reduce the price paid for everything by one-third.
so much and want her gone, would they vote to put her on the SCOTUS?
elvis
You're right. I can't tell you how many people believed the Clintons to be resourceful and even lethal and that there was no way she wasn't getting the nomination.
What happened?
How did she lose to a spanking new senator with radical views and known treasonous relationships?
I don't even want to know what force is behind him. Just get him out of our government.
BO backers are cultish and appear to be in some sort of religious frenzy. They make me genuinely nervous. Nervous enough to vote McCain.
various responses
in #110 Ron writes "The GOP did not nominate McCain. It was Dem's and Indi's in cross voting open primaries."
True. But the GOP set up those primaries on purpose to favor moderates over conservatives. There are a lot of subtle tweaks to the rules that happen beforehand that have a large effect on the ultimate nominee.
"... terrorists like Hussein will, since he is one."
Stuff like making fun of BHO's name or calling him a Muslim or a terrorist or Dumbo is not going to help get him defeated. It just makes you look looney. Why not focus on his serious shortcomings such as his Marxism, ultra-radical associations, hateful brand of Christianity, or desire to appease our enemies?
"If we would have been drilling our own oil all along, we would have all we need now..."
Very true. The problem is - even if we were supplying all our own oil, it would still be on a world market, and other countries such as China would still be buying oil from countries that hate us, and they would still be getting rich enough to do something about it. Goodness knows the USA has made many blunders in the middle east, but it always has been and always will be a problem area anyway - especially with their oil money.
In #111 Ron writes "... hiring the oil companies to drill, pump, refine, and deliver all petroleum products to us for the cost of processing plus 10 cents per gallon profit..."
Price controls - and all other government meddling with supply and demand - ALWAYS cause more problems than they fix. They usually include, but are not limited to, inadequate supply and resulting rationing.
Ethanol delivers less energy per volume than gasoline, but still explodes just like gasoline. Anything that burns will explode if properly mixed with oxygen in a closed space.
liberal mandate
in #112 Karufe writes "... the hard left will also see an Obama victory as approval."
The hard left will always do what it does. I don't care what they think.
It's what the moderates and conservatives think that matters. Remember after Clinton was elected in 1992 the left thought they had a mandate, but everyone else remembered that Clinton was elected with only 43% of the popular vote (with Perot taking 19%) - I heard that number repeated endlessly. The GOP got it right that time, and swept the 1994 elections.
That's why I think it's so important that there be a substantial vote for limited government 3rd parties this time (as opposed to Perot's populist Reform Party) - so the GOP will have clear evidence of why their butt has been kicked. Writing in someone, staying home, or voting for Obama will send the wrong message - or no message at all.
Karufe continues: "... Remember the many amnesties we defeated? ..."
You know you're desperate when you're trying to use the defeat of amnesty for illegal aliens as a reason to vote FOR McCain.
Karufe
As Yogi said in his whimsical way ,'it ain't over,til it's over'. Just because she called off her dogs,doesn't mean the hunt's finished.
She may have gotten what she wanted in her meeting with the 'precious one'Thursday,but it's temporary.
As a Clinton watcher who followed all their scandals,closely,(I still have numerous tapes of under oath hearings),I have ideas about their tenacity.
If you have not followed their climb up the ladder from their days in Arkansas,you do not know the lengths they will go to in order to get what they want.
I will believe it when I see it that they have given up on their quest.If they do give up,it will be the first time.
Vote Bob Barr....
I pretty much agree with some of the sentiments that Chris has posted. I want to see the GOP have its arse handed to them in this presidential election.
The GOP has to understand that it is time to get back to its pledge of limited government...yep the Ron Paul kind of limited government.
We have statists on the right and the left, and there really isn't a dime's worth of significant difference. One wants to steal private property to fund entitlement and welfare programs. The other looks for every excuse to fund any war against any perceived enemy they can find.
Both party's want to print money to fund their spending habits with no acountability and devalue your life's savings because the alternative, raising taxes, is too politically suicidal.
Its time to send a message to the GOP to steer it back to its so-called believe in limited Constitutiojal government.
Novak is always doom and gloom
He set off the entire Joe Wilson-Valeria Plame krap that got Libby indicted himself.
And he predicted defeat for Bush in both 2000 and 2004. He was right on the Rep. defeat in 2006 only because he always predicts the worse and occasionally it happens.
Fitzgerald was the problem, not Novak
in #122 renny writes "[Novak] set off the entire Joe Wilson-Valeria Plame krap that got Libby indicted himself."
Novak is a journalist. If they start ratting their sources (in this case, Armitage), no one will talk to them and their raison d'etre is gone.
If Armitage was a real man he would have stepped forward to end the whole charade. But of course he's just a lib that Bush should have FIRED like the rest of them when he took office.
But the real miscarrier of justice was Patrick Fitzgerald. He knew the whole story within a week of starting his investigation. Having no crime to prosecute, he went on a witch hunt trying to get people to perjure themselves. I'm no lawyer, but that's got to be worthy of disbarment or censure for prosecutorial misconduct or something. It was very similar to entrapment.
He should have held a press conference, named Armitage as the leak, said that no crime had been committed, and folded up shop a week after he started.
ex-Wyomingite
Thanks. I,of course agree with you. I have done a lot of soul-searching to get here,but I am here.
As far as I can remember,we have never had an anti-American running for president on a major party ticket.This is totally new.
Muslims are changing the landscape of the UK.Do we want this here? Obama has said he would take their side.I,for one am not ready for the burka's jilbabs,hijabs and veils.
This is a pivotal time in our country.We need a patriotic American as our leader.I believe,with all his other faults,McCain is that.
chutzpah
ex-Wyomingite, who the hell do you think you are? Why do you assume you own my vote by default? How dare you!
If you and/or the GOP want my vote, you can earn it, not count on me voting the same party I usually vote!
I'm not punishing anyone with Obama. I'm not going to vote for him or any other Democrat this time. If the GOP wants my vote, they can show some inkling of commitment to limited government - the only reason I've ever voted for them.
I'll most likely vote for Jeff Sessions in November because keeping conservative Republicans in the Senate will be critical during the benighted next 2-4 years (regarless of who is the POTUS).
Other than that, what reason other than "Boo! Hussein Obama!" has the GOP given me to vote for them? Not good enough!
"... The only brand of conservatism they support is their own narrow brand..."
As I said before, I would have voted for Romney, Guiliani, Huckabee, or Thompson. They all had problems, but they were at least pretty conservative on two of Reagan's three legs. McCain's only got half a leg (socially liberal, fiscally liberal. Good on defense concerning Iraq but AWOL on border security, which is equally important).
There was a very wide range of policies I vehemently disagree with (such as Guiliani's pro-choice and Huckabee's fiscal populism) that I would have been willing to overlook.
McCain is the spoiled brat - willing to do anything to get the liberal media to like him. He's the one that's crossed the line. I'm over here on the same side of the line that I've always been on.
"That sounds like a declaration of war to me"
Oh - that's who you think you are - Buggs Bunny...
Chris
"You know you're desperate when you're trying to use the defeat of amnesty for illegal aliens as a reason to vote FOR McCain."
A likely Obama presidency is reason enough to vote FOR McCain.
The point was that if conservatives are in a tantrum (like myself) over the lefts take over now...you ain't seen nothin' yet once the dems unbridled legislative power goes into affect.
Some of us realize that and are doing what we can to halt a complete overhaul of our constitution and moral decency. Like many others here, I too have served my country honorably and have more than earned my right to freedom, liberty and all rights provided in the constitution that I, at one time, have actively defended.
I am also entitled to a vote. One that will be cast for the guy who isn't so preoccupied with gratifying the whims of 'other countries' or rationing our individual supply so not to offend 'other countries' or promising to strip our defense to show good faith to 'other countries.'
each person's vote
Karufe, I respect your opinion that "A likely Obama presidency is reason enough to vote FOR McCain."
It is not a good enough reason for me. We've weathered bad presidents in the past due to the Founders' genius in creating the separation of powers. I also believe in the people of this country. If Obama turns out as evil as people are saying, his political power will be rapidly diminished.
"... I too have served my country honorably and have more than earned my right to freedom, liberty and all rights provided in the constitution that I, at one time, have actively defended. I am also entitled to a vote..."
I never served in the military, and I have profound respect for you and the others who have done so. Either way you, of course, have the entitlement to your vote.
I just don't appreciate people like Ex-Wyomingite that speak like my vote belongs to the GOP no matter what.
McCain
To point out what a candidate does is fine, but to call it a "mistake" in headlines is out of bounds, and is only used by writers to call his integrity and decision making into question. You seem to believe that you are the ultimate judge of a candidate, and have the right to set us straight! We are not the nitwits you think we are, and are quite able to evaluate a candidate without constant interference from the bias of opinion writers.
McCain - Novak Reports
I so appreciate the insider reports from Mr. Novak. Concise, factual, and as Jack Webb would say ... 'Just the facts, Ma'm'. I'm puzzled by the consistent mediocre and low ratings given to Mr. Novak's columns. Are readers evaluating the excellent factual reporting or just damning the unpleasant facts that Novak reports? Pandering fools like Bill O'Reilly, a media empty suit, can't reach the kneecaps of Novak in terms of integrity.
MCCAIN/JINDAL 2008! a winning ticket
Jindal was on Geraldo tonight and this guy would be an excellent running mate for McCain.
Huckabee could do rallies in the south and also where where the bitter whites cling to their bibles and guns.
Romney could do his fantastic rallies over in Utah, the West, and Michigan.
I like Huckabee and Romney but McCain will not choose them. If McCain chooses Jindal, I think he's got a winning ticket.
It will be wonderful to see a younger candidate show Obama how a real man acts, speaks, and doesn't have to use affirmative action to win an election.
IT'S RAINING MCCAIN HALLELUIAH !
Obama = Rev. Wright
Lest we EVER forget.
Bumper Sticker
Where can I get my "I'm a bitter clinger" bumper sticker?
Bumper Sticker
Or better yet "Bitter Clingers for McCain"
McCain will be a disgrace!
Imagin Mccain giving a speech at the UN. He can't even read a prompter. Many people in the GOP have been brianwashed to always think democrats are liberals and anit America and would always raise taxes. But as you look at what the GOP has done in the past year, you only see disaster. Now McCain is trying to seduce evangelicals by talking about judges. They think Christians are narrow minded people who think judges will to our work of evangelizing and doning the work of Jesus Christ. My wife and her family have always voted Republican. But my work in the past few weeks just showing them the lobbyist that run McCain's compaign and the the people they have worked for. Also showing the lies of the Iraq war and testimonies from former Iraq veterans. All that has changed their mind and we now believe Obama will be a breath of fresh air. He has banned lobbyist money from his campaign and from the DNC. Signs of change to come!
Senator McCain
All of the backers of Senator McCain are describing him as the lesser of two evils. Well, the lesser of two evils is still evil. As long as we support any nominee of the Republican party because they are the lesser of two evils, we will never get a good candidate again. Now is the time to abandon the Republican party and their nominees and either find or form a third party to nominate candidates who are good for the USA.
to Retired Geek and Efi
Retired Geek, excellent points in #137.
Where does McCain fall in your list? with most of the Republicans or most of the Democrats?
Efi, you're not fooling anyone. If I don't vote for McCain it will be because he's too similar to Barack Obama.
You should do your homework, by the way - McCain has apparently purged all the lobbyists from his compaign staff (although he's still taking their money). Obama isn't taking money from lobbyists, but he has several on his staff. Obama is hardly as pure as the wind-driven snow.
Efi writes "Many people in the GOP have been brianwashed to always think democrats are liberals and [anti] America and would always raise taxes."
I know that many Democrats love America - but Democrats are all liberals (any conservatives like Zell Miller - or even moderates like Lieberman, have been run off), and they do always try to raise taxes. It's not brainwashing, it's the way things are.
It's the Price of Gas, Stupid !
Excellent statistics from Retired Geek!
Now how do we could get McCain to follow the Republican Party on those issues?
Energy is the #1 item on voters minds. It now trumps everything according to Reagan-Democrats.
8 of 10 voters equate "following politics" to watching bread rise. They have no clue as to what Obama or McCain stand for, none. And voters are looking for a pro-energy candidate.
McCain can either roundhouse Obama on oil drilling, or he can kiss his dreams goodbye. As of right now, Obama is heading to the White House and America is headed for disaster.
You're way out of touch when you say that Zell Miller Democrats have been driven out of the party.
The reason the Democrats did so well in the US House of Representatives elections in 2006 is precisely because their head honcho for getting Democrats elected, Rahm Emanuel, ENCOURAGED conservative middle america districts to nominate conservatives. And many of them did, and many of those won. There were very few districts in which a Republican was replaced by a liberal Democrat.
Emanuel's mandate was to get Democrats elected, and he fulfilled that mandate by seeing that Democrats got elected, no matter what their particular policy views.
Note that 2 of the 3 recent special elections where the Democrats took over a House seat were won by a CONSERVATIVE Democrat.
So next year there is going to be a very big block of conservative Democrats in the House. The question will be to what extent they roll over for Pelosi and to what extent they ally themselves with Republicans on policy issues.
Remember, these are Democrats in districts where the voters do not support the Nancy Pelosi agenda.
And keep in mind that these guys have to face the voters every two years.
I'm not sure how this is playing out in the Senate, certainly there are a few conservative Democrats in the Senate but not very many.
But the notion that the conservative Democrats have been drummed out of their party is nonsense.
In fact, I believe they largely hold the balance of power right now in Washington and are liable to wield even more power next year. They are the ones that President Obama is going to be fighting to get his agenda adopted.
lesser of two evils
Forget about which candidate is the lesser of two evils.
The question that really matters is:
Which is the lesser of two evils, a McCain administration or an Obama administration. In my view an Obama administration is, because you will at least have a genuine opposition party in Congress, even if it is a minority. And if the Republicans in Congress can make their case with the American people, then they have a shot at prevailing on some key issues.
If you have McCain in the White House, who in Washington is going to be fighting against that nation-wrecking "comprehensive" immigration reform bill? Who is going to fight the phony legislation against global warming?
You will have hideous politicians like Lindsey Graham prancing around Washington calling the shots, by virtue of the fact of being the President's buddies.
No, a McCain administration would be a monstrosity. An Obama administration would likely not be one, because there will be a genuine battle for the hearts and minds of the American people.
So the question is not whose policies are the lesser evil, McCain's or Obama's. Of course, McCain's are the lesser evil.
The question is whose administration would be the lesser evil. And the answer is, Obama's.
so-called conservative Democrats
bot_feeder, I hope you're right about conservative Democrats (in #144). I'm well aware of what happened in the three special elections and in 2006.
What I've seen indicates that these (new D House Reps) are people who ran as conservative Dems, but toe the Dem party line when they get to Washington.
John Breaux, Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman were the last conservative Dems in the senate. That's where it counts. A few sure-enough Conservative Dems in the House won't mean much. Name just one conservative Democrat in the Senate and I'll think differently about this.
"The question will be to what extent they roll over for Pelosi and to what extent they ally themselves with Republicans on policy issues."
Exactly.
Maybe it's both - These new supposedly conservative Democrats are allying themselves with Republicans as they roll over for Pelosi.
Like with the Farm Bill.
A McCain Mistake
Insulting President Bush. It's dividing the Republican Party. It shows he still holds a grudge for losing in 2000. It appears petty and unStatesman like. Believe me, it will not win votes!
McCain Polling 29% Hispanic Vote
While driving off millions of long time GOP voters with his amnesty plan, McCain has been chasing 29% of 6% of the total vote.
Great Plan!
Hahahahaha, VaPat!
Talk about penny wise and pound foolish!
For The Mathematically Challenged
McCain has thrown out 15-20% of the conservative base who will not hold their nose for another cheap labor importer to garner 1.74% of the total vote.
The Libertarian and Constitution Parties thank you!
Virginny Patriot and john McCain
Count Virginny Patriot amongst the 30% of conservative Republicans' white supremacist fringe. He/she is afraid of amnesty for about 5 million Mexicans illegally living in this country; and nothing else but this drives his hatred of John McCain. In reality, McCain hasn't the will nor the power, even as President; to push an amnesty bill through Congress; But Virgy Patriot and white supremacists have to find a whipping boy;
It mot as well be McCain. --WHY?
Because; McCain hasn't openly expressed enough hatred for illegal immigrants. He's "too liberal," to HATE any ethnic group.
10% is more than you think
Robert, I don't know if that 10% of the base number is right.
But even if it is, it would have been more than enough to cost Bush the election in both 2000 and 2004.
Who is leaving who?
Robert writes "... the size of the "conservative base" is smaller...because a lot of people have left it over anger at Bush"
We're still the conservative base, and we figured out that Bush ISN'T conservative. It's Bush that left us to be "moderate". Your concept of Bush as a hard-right-winger has skewed the rest of your political analysis.
Now, McCain may be able to win without the base as he does attract independents. But the media, whose praise he has sought by repeatedly stabbing the GOP in the back, will abandon him for Obama now that the chips are down.
At this point I don't know that I care if McCain or Obama wins - I just want the GOP to understand that it needs to return to limited government.
some common ground with Robert
Robert, "Iraq and deficits out the wazo" ARE limited government issues.
Also, I'll bet if you did some in-depth polling you'd find that most people upset with Bush over the botched Katrina rescue never vote Republican in the first place. Those who do mostly understand that the first response was the responsibility of local and state governments, not Federal. But I'll agree with you that Bush has not done a good job picking competent people to delegate and advise.
Robert continues: "One can claim Bush is not "conservative" or "far right' but the only people who buy that are the far right. The rest of the American people including a lot of people who voted for him are rejecting the "far right" because they believe Bush and his policies are a result of it."
You're probably right. That is why I don't want McCain continuing to sully the name "conservative" as Bush has done - and one reason why I won't vote for him.
"If one was going to try and say "bush isnt our guy" the time to have done it was pre 06 elections"
For what it's worth, I was excited about Bush in 2000, but he has been "not my guy" since March of 2002 when he signed McCain Feingold in an obvious violation of his oath to uphold and defend the constitution. All this other stuff has just been salt in the wound. I held my nose and voted for Bush to keep Kerry out in 2004, but I'm done with that.
"It is the end of the right wings influence on politics." Keep telling yourself that. Fans of limited government are out of luck for the next few years, but the political pendulum never stops swinging.
Protest by voting libertarian
This may be the libertarian's best year. They are the only party that says throw all the bums out...republican holdovers and democrats alike along with their Earmarks.
I will do my part
to keep Juan McCain from the White House. A McCain defeat will be the best thing that can happen to the Republican Party. Obama will be just another Jimmy Carter. After four years of Obama, the country will be better for it because the American people will throw his a ss out after four years, and the GOP will not nominate another RINO in 2012.
dreadnaught
"In reality, McCain hasn't the will nor the power, even as President; to push an amnesty bill through Congress"
You are proof that TH does allow idiots to comment. Where in the hell have you been he last year? Ever heard of McCain-Kennedy? The bill be revisited and President McCain will sign it the second it hits his desk. BTW, enforcing immigration laws, or any laws that is currently active, is not white supremacism or racism.
People like dreadnaugh
does not realize what illegal immigration is doing to this country. Or, maybe he does and that's why he supports it. As an immigrant who waited in line for years to gain entry into this country, and finally got my citizenship, here is my take. I live in a southern California town where the Hispanic population is 80%, mostly illegal. The town is going bankrupt. Social services are overloaded. Schools are overrun and overbudget. The worst thing of all, from what I have witnessed, is the lack of attempt to learn English and to assimilate. There is no need to learn English here, because everyone speaks Spanish. Even little children speak to each other in Spanish. Spanish television and radio is dominant. Everything in public in Spanish. You may ask what is wrong with that? Plenty. This is an English-speaking country. If the children of immigrants are to succeed in this country, they must master the English language, just as I would have to learn Spanish if I move to Mexico and expect to succeed. The alternative is to be English-illiterate and pick oranges for the rest of your life, and that is what everyone here does for a living, even the second generation. Illegal aliens and their children are a drain on the system and the American people. A third world country and socialism are not far behind. Then again, maybe that's what people like dreadnaugh want. He has no answers, so he calls people who does silly names.
Gambler 5112
"The defeat of John Mccain will be the best thing that could happen to the Republican Party". Your words. That may be true,but will it be best for the country to elect Barack Obama?
I think not. If McCain is elected,immediately,work could start on bulding a viable party for the next election. It is too late for this one. If not to rebuild the Republican Party,then another stronger one.
I think Obama would do so much damage,we could not recover,ever. Even if only a fraction of his proposals come to fruition. We will be ruined,as a country.
Action
said, "Bob, why have you yet to write about how Governor Schwartzenegger has broken the law by illegally authorizing changes to the marriage licences in California without an accompanying enabling statute?"
In case you did not follow the amnesty battle last year with McCain, Bob Novak was in his corner. Novak scolded those of us who were against illegal immigration. He used the liberal lines like "We are a nation of immigrants", and conveniently left out the work "illegal".
When one is young and naive, he is usually a liberal. Once in their middle age, people become more conservative. As we get old and feeble, we revert back to liberalism. Novak is in the third stage of his life.
Who would be worse?
Rowly, I'm with Gambler5112 on this one. Forgive my broken record, but if McCain is elected, the GOP in congress will do whatever McCain wants, continuing their slide to the left. The Dems will go with McCain on any move left.
If Obama is elected, history shows that the GOP will grow a pair and fight him. Maybe we'll even see evidence of these conservative Democrats I'm told exist - you never know.
So even if Obama is more liberal than McCain, the country may move farther left with McCain as POTUS.
Also consider that the country survived FDR, JFK and Carter. They've all done permanent damage, but it can be mitigated - or even turned back if we can get the GOP to return to first principles.
But continuing to reward the GOP for abandoning those principles is a step in the wrong direction.
chris
I do see your point.I just think if Obama is elected,he will change the country,with the help of the left-wing congress.
I am afraid for the country.We have NEVER had someone running for president like this.We have had liberals,but not this kind.
Hillary is liberal,but I don't believe she is anti-American.I cannot say the same about him.He and congress will have us answering to the UN.
I also don't think McCain is anti-American.He displeases me in many ways,but I am not afraid he will bankrupt the country and turn us over to the United Nations.
