Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Agents for Sen. Hillary Clinton, trying desperately to keep alive her presidential campaign, are privately telling Democrats that she is so "tight" with a dollar that she would not continue her contest against Sen. Barack Obama if she did not have a chance to win.

That was a reference to Clinton pulling $11 million out of her family's newfound personal fortune to maintain her candidacy. Saying that she would not waste money on a futile effort, her supporters imply she will still find a path to the presidential nomination.

With not enough primary elections left for Clinton to close the delegate gap between her and Obama, her strategists have to rely on the arguments they make to super-delegates. But they are having trouble selling their claim that Clinton would not be spending her own money if she did not harbor some secret tricks.

MCCAIN'S EVANGELICALS

An invitation for Sen. John McCain to meet with evangelical leader James Dobson at his Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., so far has been rebuffed by the McCain campaign.

Dobson has indicated he cannot support McCain for president. His opposition reflects continued resistance to the prospective presidential nominee among Christian conservatives. They take issue with McCain's current positions on stem cell research, immigration and global warming, as well as his past sponsorship of campaign finance reform.

Many of Dobson's followers are looking beyond 2008 to seek a new leader of the conservative movement for the 2012 election.

NO THANKS, CHENEY

Key Republicans in Mississippi, stunned by the loss Tuesday of a supposedly safe congressional seat, grumble that Vice President Dick Cheney's campaign visit to the district probably hurt more than it helped.

Their complaint is that the vice presidential visit was a "distraction," which diminished the effort to save the election. These critics put the visit by former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee in the same category. National Republicans spent millions of dollars on the race in an unsuccessful attempt to tie the conservative Democratic candidate to Barack Obama.

It is generally agreed that the Democratic winner, county official Travis Childers, was a much better candidate than the Republican loser, Greg Davis, mayor of a Memphis suburb. But any Republican likely would have been able to beat any Democrat in the north Mississippi district if the tide were not running strongly against the GOP.

APPEASING THE AGGIES

Any real chance to sustain a presidential veto of the farm bill vanished because of what senior House Republicans heard from President George W. Bush when they were summoned May 9 to the White House for a pep talk.

Bush informed the assembled Republicans that he was about to veto the final version of the farm bill for excessive spending. But he went on to suggest that Republicans from agricultural districts, hard-pressed in a tough election year for the GOP, would be free to vote their own interests. This was seen as caving in to the "aggies."

The outcome of Wednesday's vote was a foregone conclusion. Republicans supported the measure, 100 to 91, as the bill passed by veto-proof margin of 318 to 106.

RON PAUL'S TROOPS

There is no sign so far that the resources of Rep. Ron Paul's Republican presidential campaign will be made available to former GOP Rep. Bob Barr as the Libertarian Party candidate, but McCain strategists fear that will be the case.

Barr is running on much the same issues as Paul, including opposition to the military intervention in Iraq. Paul, the Libertarian candidate in 1988, has never ended his campaign for the Republican nomination and has continued to pile up impressive primary totals against Sen. John McCain. Paul has indicated he never will endorse McCain.

Without help from Paul's impressive national network, Barr would be unlikely to perform better than the usual Libertarian presidential nominees.

mccain made a speech. i swear he did
does anyone out there remember that Mccain made a speech last week, a speech tha he himself labeled as major? His "Impossibloe Dream" and "Wouldnt it be Loverly" speech. therein lies the answer as to who will win in November.

"Puzzling mix of issues. ...but why on earth (or heaven?) is there a "Christian" party line on immigration-- too many Catholics coming in? Or global warming --a distraction from the End Time?"

As another poster pointed out, immigration is never an issue. Illegal invasions are. It's a matter of national security as well as rule of law.

Global warming, the way it is being addressed and handled, is anti scriptural. Greenies set up nature as a god. They are more interested in caring for polar bears than people and more interested in the well being of spotted owls than human being made in God's image.

As far as you crack over end times, what you don't get is the end times will come on God's time table, not yours or mine or Al Gore's. And when we reach THAT appointed time, there is NOTHING anyone or anything can do to halt it.

We are to be wise stewards of the earth, understanding the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. We are to care for God's creatures with the understanding that we are worth more than hundreds of sparrows according to his word.

This green business is nothing more than pagan nature worship. And if we are in the last days, than going green won't stop the earth from having her devastating contractions.

Dobson
McCain and his tendency to rebuff James Dobson when Dobson requests a meeting shows McCains disdain for evangelicals.I am a very right leaning evangelical and do give Dobson much of my attention, and do trust his judgement.

Look at any Dobson book. Do you see anything in there that is against sound evangelical family policy? I didn't think so. I never heard of James Dobson until Reagan appointed him.

If McCain thinks he can win a presidential election without the evangelicals, he had better go back and check every winning republican presidential candidate, take away evangelical votes and see that they would have lost without them.

Republican losses
Now that Republicans' candidate is chosen, any Republican candidate running in these early elections will be at a disadvantage. The Dems are out, hot and heavy, voting for the girl or the black guy. They're unlikely to cross over and vote for the Republican.

These Republican losses are understandable and not a definitive indication of how the fall election will go. (Not that the Republicans have done much to redeem themselves since they were kicked around and/or out last election....)

Unfortunately, with McCain "excitement" spread between Dems and Republicans, with lots of Republicans not so very excited, the fall election could still be loaded in favor of the Dems.

Love that spending
Is this indicative of how Hillary 'balances' a budget?

George in CA
I rather think the "evangelicals" have done little to "lead the GOP off a cliff". Had the GOP Representatives paid more attention to the "evangelical" message, many out of office today due to scandal would yet be serving this nation and God. The "evangelicals" never endorsed the irresponsible Fiscal policies pursued by the GOP leadership this century. Further, and more to the point, McCain doesn't have to go on his knees to any constituency, and Dobson's followers are a legitimate politcal constituency like any other under the US Constitution, (I doubt if he has been invited); these people do vote however, just like anarchists, US communists, Muslims in this country (radical or not), and many other constituency groups, and no one requires, no I suspects solicits, your "delight", much less approval.

why do you find these issues a "puzzling mix"?
the "immigration" issue refered to has nothing to do with IMMIGRATION, which is a LEGAL form of entry into this country; it is about the belief in a nation of laws and not men's whims of the moment for whatever self-serving politcal and/or financial reasons. Oh, and in case you've missed the entire trend, there are more than a few "evangelical" Catholics.
As far as Global Warming goes, most all believe in the responsible stewardship of God's world, but involving a PROVEN theory, absent of PANIC, and conscience of the impact of "solutions" upon the poor around the globe!

Nice Article...

It's refreshing to hear how McCain can't face the music. Won't face the music. And can't imagine the musicians switching to taps.

Sounds like McCain and Hillary have a common-ground?

Evangelicals
I am an evangelical and am delighted that McCain has rebuffed Dobson. The evangelical leaders have led the Republican party off a cliff. McCain does not have to pray at the feet of the evangelical leaders. He is conservative on the most important issues and certainly heads and shoulders above either Democratic candidate. I believe he can win in November and when he does, Dobson please stay home.

Religious mysteries
Regarding evangelical voters. "They take issue with McCain's current positions on stem cell research, immigration and global warming, as well as his past sponsorship of campaign finance reform."

Puzzling mix of issues. I can see a "party line" on stem cells, but why on earth (or heaven?) is there a "Christian" party line on immigration-- too many Catholics coming in? Or global warming --a distraction from the End Time?

Hey maverick...
"A fighter who dodges sniper bullets. "

There was never any real danger...
I heard from another poster they do not use silver bullets in Bosnia.

Hillary's spending, so what
Who bought it? Did anyone fall for that one? Hillary's spending, OK. Now what? Whats suppose to happen now. Are the Super Delegates suppose to switch sides and run to her because she's spending. What does spending suppose to mean? Is it proof of her chances of winning the nomination. There comes a time when you have to face reality. With Hillary's over active imagination, facing reality doesn't come easy. By staying in this contest, Hillary is making everyone play in a world her over active imagination created where she comes from behind and wins the nomination because she's a fighter. A fighter who dodges sniper bullets.
