Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sen. Joseph Lieberman's friends are certain that if Democrats expand their one-vote Senate edge in this year's elections, they will kick him out of the Senate Democratic caucus and, therefore, oust him as Homeland Security Committee chairman.

Lieberman risked the usual punishment of ejection from the party caucus when he endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain for president and actively campaigned for him. But with Democrats in a Senate majority of only 51 to 49, they would lose control if Lieberman defected to the Republicans.

After being defeated by an anti-Iraq war candidate in the 2006 Connecticut Democratic primary, Lieberman kept his Senate seat in the general election by running as an independent and now calls himself an "Independent Democrat." He became Homeland Security chairman under the Democrats' strict seniority rules by remaining in the party caucus. Despite his participation in McCain's campaign, Lieberman generally votes the straight Democratic line on issues other than Iraq.

ROMNEY FOR VP

Mitt Romney has pleased John McCain with his help since losing the Republican presidential nomination, but it remains unlikely the former Massachusetts governor will be selected for vice president.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush is reported by Florida Republican insiders as favoring a McCain-Romney ticket, added to backing from former White House political chief Karl Rove and some senior McCain campaign staffers. Nevertheless, the McCain consensus is that defects that made Romney a problematic presidential candidate also would hurt him as a running mate.

A footnote: Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty gets higher marks from the McCain inner circle than from conservative Republican governors and is in the running for vice president.

PETRAEUS TO NATO?

Persistent rumors that Gen. David Petraeus will be transferred from his Iraq command to NATO are attributed by Pentagon sources to his critics in the Army officer corps.

These sources consider it unlikely that President Bush, entering his final months in office, would shift Petraeus from the Army's most important military command to a relative backwater. Such an assignment is desired by fellow general officers, who resent Petraeus for outstripping his senior colleagues.

A footnote: One of Petraeus' friends in the officer corps suggests the best thing Bush could do for him now would be to permit his wife to move from the United States to Jordan for the remainder of his Iraqi command.

BUSINESS FLINCHES

The national business lobbies that have pushed hard for congressional approval of the Colombian Free Trade Agreement flinched when asked to help defeat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's unprecedented pre-emptive strike.

Pelosi moved to change the rules so the House would not have to vote on a trade pact that is opposed by organized labor and has been pushed by President Bush. When asked to join in trying to block Pelosi's move, Washington's top business lobbyists declined. Without business opposition, Pelosi prevailed in the House Thursday 224 to 195 on a largely party-line vote.

The lobbies explained they do not like to get involved in a procedural vote, as this would be. The real reason, however, may be unwillingness to confront Pelosi, who will still be around when Bush is gone.

MCCAIN'S LIBERAL

John McCain's presidential campaign has made clear to conservatives that liberal Republican Bobbie Greene Kilberg will not be running the party's national convention in St. Paul, Minn., this summer, as this column indicated March 22.

My sources had informed me that Kilberg, a longtime McCain supporter, definitely had been decided on as convention manager. This column's report created a firestorm of complaints from conservative activists and many McCain backers. The McCain campaign immediately responded that Kilberg was merely McCain's "liaison" with the Republican National Committee (RNC).

Since then, a McCain spokesman has downgraded Kilberg to "good friend" without a top staff position. RNC staffer Maria Cino is handling details of the St. Paul convention with an overall manager yet to be named by McCain.

Novak, the insider
One thing's for certain in national politics - if Novak doesn't know it, it isn't worth knowing.

One thing seems for certain - the fascist dhimmicrats don't tolerate 'mavericks' - and defections from the party line. Joe Lieberman, the man without a party, soon may find it to his advantage to defect to the republicans.

Anyway, as a devout orthodox Jew, it seems so incongruous for Lieberman to support the left's position on abortion. Is his conscience adequately assuaged by telling himself it's just politics? He's like the assassin who goes to Church before he does a job - it's just 'business'.

Some moral code...

Lieberman for VP or Condi
Since the time Fred Thompson jumped into the race and McCain was hanging on barely, this has been an entertaining movie. Now we are almost back to the ordinary. It was fun again with Obama and his substandard home loan and substandard preachers hate comments, but even that has wained. Now it is "Guess the VP" for entertainment.

It sure would rock the boat in the Obama camp with Ms. Rice.

I don't know anyone who ...
...votes for a Vice-president.They vote for or against a Presidential candidate. The Veep's only constitutional job is to preside over the Senate,a very rare occorance.Ceremonial mostly. The rest of the time he just hangs around waiting for the President to die.

Mitt was my choice for president this year. But I will NOT vote for McCain just to get Mitt a ceremonial job!I rather see us defeat McCain this year and put up Mitt in 2012.

Either Romney or Crist
Rice has been a disaster as secretary of state.

She is a neocon, and in my opinion, McCain needs to distance himself from that crowd. He already has neocon advisors in his campaign whose advice on Iraq has so damaged the Bush administrtion.

Don't get me wrong. Now that we are in Iraq, we must not fail..and to that extent I support McCain more so than the Democrats whose irresponsible withdrawal would turn a disaster into a catastrophe.

I just wish he exhibited more of a hard-headed realism, and less of this leftist-inspired neocon nonsense dreamworld of turning muslim societies into democracies. Stability, yes. Democracy, are you friggin serious?

I like Romney as a vice president, or perhaps Crist of Florida. Pawlenty is from a relatively small state. To counter the democrats almost certain victories in mega-states like California and New York, McCain would need a mega-state like Florida, and of course Texas.

Goodbye Joe
With his incessant coddling with Republicans, if they had won 50 seats, he would have caucused with them anyway. With any luck, McCain with pick him as his VP candidate and he can drag him down like he did Gore.

All you yellow dog Lames
aught to get off of Lieberman's back. As Noval said, he votes Dem on everything but Iraq. Hah, so does McCain so they would be a good match. That being said, he will not be Mclame's VP choice. mcLame has a butt-boy that has been sniffing around for two years now, good old Linseed Oil Graham. That is the one good thing about the Mclame run. Perhaps if we are lucky Graham will accept the VP ticket AND resign his senate seat to run. Then we here in SC can get a real senator instead of a RINO terrorist coddling liberal puke.

Cough it up, Vic
We want to know what you REALLY think of Graham.

:-D

oh well.
There is an argument some make to the effect Joe Lieberman is a nice enough fellow, but sometimes forgets whether is in on the floor of the U.S. Senate, or the Israeli Knesset.

Now, I don't believe that is the case.

I simply believe Lieberman views the security of Israel, and the security of the United States, as one and the same.

Is that a distinction without a difference?

You decide.

The fact Hannity and Limbaugh shill for him does not necessarily redound to his favor.

But I am sure he is an honorable enough fellow, despite their endorsements.

Vic may be right about Linseed Oil Graham.

I am sure he will be offered a position in McCain's cabinet, if the GOP triumphs this November.

Savage99
lol, I have sent him numerous E-Mails. I hope he doesn't think I will vote for him.

I do hope he resigns so that Governor Sanford would appoint a real conservative.

WANT INTELLIGENCE IN A V.P.?
I would opt for McCain/Lieberman. He seems to be about the most intelligent of any possibles I can think of. The fact that he votes according to critical thinking is a nice change from the normal lock-step voting we see constantly, particularly in a big block (-head) part of the Democratic party.

While I have voted Republican about 95% of my voting life, I know how to split tickets and do when I believe it's the right thing to do. I have a Democrat Senator who many times votes the way I wish my Republican Senator would. That's pretty bad. And it makes me wonder (well, not really) where the Republican's heart is. In his pocketbook maybe?

The Canary in the MIne
Israel is like the canary in the mine shaft when, and if, its light is extinguished by Iranian-sponsored terrorists the western world is next--especially the USA. I believe Lieberman recognizes that danger and that's one reason he supports Bush's military effort and McCain's campaign.

He could play a critical role in pulling away American Jewish voters from the Democrat Party. It's apparent that no Democrat president, much less Barack Obama, will say to Israel, "Got your back!"

Obama's core constituency is no friend of Israel in my opinion and American Jewish voters must recognize that fact and swing to the Republican side--or stand by the sidelines as Israel is devastated.

Despite the liberals' Pollyanna, "See-no-evil" outlook Iran means to destory Israel and I believe the Democrat Party would let it happen. Whoops!

McCain/Romney to Win California/MidWest
Romney, Giuliani, or Bloomberg would all work for McCain if he intends to take California. Any of the other named VP hopefuls will not. McCain will need someone who is well-vetted and already on the national stage, like Romney, or Giuliani, with no real skeletons coming out in the last minutes of the election. Also, McCain needs a VP that will pull the Party together and be able to raise funds of which all three mentioned above can. Romney has also won the Mid-West which is important to McCain if he is to win. Romney won Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan and would have won Wisconsin if he had not have withdrawn from the race. Giuliani gave McCain California, New York, and other North Eastern states, also important to McCain. Bloomberg would also most likely give McCain some of the North Eastern states and provide considerable means of monies that McCain also needs badly. Any one of the three can help with economy issues which seems to be the most important part of this election and will likely become more important as the year extends into November. Romney and Huckabee has energized much of the Republican base. It was Romney that drove a record Republican turnout in Minnesota. Minnesota's Governor looked a "little tired" to the Republican base, and thus gave McCain nothing. Go Romney, Good-bye Pawlenty, it is clear Pawlenty's star has fallen into the reality of his mean-spirited nature.

McCains VP
McCain needs to choose an evangical running mate that is very strong on social issues.

All this talk about left leaning republicans helping McCain in California, NY and the like, is nothing compared to the evangical vote.

Look back to the 2000 vote, check out how many evangicals voted for Bush. Now check out 2004 and see how the evangical vote gave Bush the presidency.

The republican party has seen scores of evangicals leave the party for a third party. Does the republican party really want to become more central and left leaning? Do they really think they can win the White House without the evangicals? I say the republican party needs evangicals, like the democrats need the black vote.

The black vote has slowly come to the right through evangical blacks.

I say, McCain choose a strong evangical, a very right leaning conservative evangelical or you might not win the White House.

You got it! The notion that American-Israeli relations are some form of zero-sum game is
suicidal wishful thinking. That which enables Israel's survivial helps us out and vice versa.

Western Civilization and Christendom------that is us, folks-----can survive heavy casualties
but cannot take dhimmitude.

Having said that, I hasten to add that aid to Israel (and everywhere else) should be altered so as to eliminate the need for same.

There is a simple principle to be followed. It is called fire and movement.

Romney is best choice by far
With more and more people depressed as they feel the effects of the down-economy, Mitt Romney would be the best choice for McCain's running mate. This would be a winning ticket both strong on the war and the economy.

Dr Richard Land wants Condi as VP
One of the strong evangelical voices in our nation is Dr. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention, based in Tennessee. He is on record showing support for Condi as McCain's VP. She is a preacher's daughter who finds faith as her source of strength to endure the attacks by the liberals and those who seek to sabotage the president.

She is still the most popular Republican in Washington DC, with a job approval rating of 60%.

If McCain wants her as his VP, the only people who will complaining are the anti-Bush people and Democrats. it is that simple.

She is a fabulous person and a real star in the Republican party.

Romney Energizes Pro-lifers
Wounded Knee, Exactly, which is why Pawlenty will not work for McCain, and why a McCain/Romney ticket can. Romney energizes and gets the vote from strong pro-lifers, like myself, and from many others. You make the point that without the evangelicals, a Republican Presidential candidate will not win in November. Finally, Wounded Knee, I applaud your discernment that many are leaving the Republican party, and in my state of Minnesota, with our Governor, and his attacks on undocumented workers, his secret meetings Minnesota Supreme Court justice selections, and his administration ignoring the needs of Native Americans to buy, sell, and travel in Northern Minnesota, the Republican party is becoming the party of hate. When our Governor could have been strong on social issues, he was giving his billionaire buddy a ballpark by taking the voice away from the voters. I became so upset that I thought never to vote Republican again. There were legislators, on both side of the aisle, who would have worked together to place an amendment for babies, to our state Constitution, on the ballot, but Pawlenty acted in his typical manner to ignore true needs and concentrate his efforts on the elite. Following Pawlenty's actions, I thought that all Republicans must be liars, but then our President kept his word and appointed two (2) pro-life judges to the U.S. Supreme Court. McCain will not win the White House with Pawlenty on his team.

No Condi!
Whoa! Not just Democrats would object to her being tapped for VP! She may have been a highly successful provost, may speak fluent Russian, may play a mean piano; but she changed from a loyal, competent head of NSA to being completely co-opted by the anti-Bush, anti-Israel factions in State.

She has been totally inept at straightening out the mess at State. She's too much ambassador, too little manager. And what does she know about economics: Me university, you alumni, you send money, me stash it away and raise tuition.

McCain needs Economic help in VP
Tom,
I suspect that you are right that the DEMs would have a hay day with Condi. I think she would be a good VP but, has been to closely tied to the Bush Admin. and therefore the news would help Obama or Clinton to trash her. What McCain needs is someone that will help him with California and also have some economic background. Romney, Huckabee, Crist, Pawlenty and other VP hopefuls have governor backgrounds, however, Pawlenty has a 1 billion dollar state deficit. Also, Pawlenty refused to back a pro-life amendment to the MN Constitution. Therefore, for 2 reasons Pawlenty is out, he is really not pro-life and can't manage budgets. Huckabee is pro-life and would pull the far right back to McCain, however, his views would fail in California. Romney is pro-life and has economics and likely would help in California. This makes him the most likely winner for McCain. Romney also did very well in the Mid-West on McCain-Pawlenty turff. McMain-Pawlenty lost North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota (Pawlenty's home state). Romney won them all. Romney would of won Wisconsin as well if he had stayed in the race. Gulliani is not pro-life but is well like by California and New York and other eastern states that could help McCain. I don't like Gulliani but he might be helpful to a McCain election win. Gulliani also would not draw back in all of the far right of the Republican party, which is a negative to him. Romney's problem is that a share of the religious right, that hate Mormons, would have a hard time to vote a McCain-Romney ticket. But, that's not going to be a real problem. Also, Romney, and Gulliani or Bloomberg would be very helpful to McCain on donations to his campaign. Something huckabee and Pawlenty won't be able to help with. I think McCain wants Pawlenty, but, he will likely loose if he selects him. Pawlenty is no help in California, and wont be able to raise money like McCain needs to win. A loose, loose, loose choice. Romney is a win, win, win choice.

Condi is a lightweight
I agree, Tom. To select Rice as VP simply because she's black and a woman would be further evidence that the GOP is determined to become dhimmicrat lite where the demographic trumps competence. If it should come to that, Rice is no more presidential than Obambi or madam klintoon.

Vic

"Perhaps if we are lucky Graham will accept the VP ticket AND resign his senate seat to run. Then we here in SC can get a real senator instead of a RINO terrorist coddling liberal puke."
__________
Hear, hear - he is quite the boy a-hole, a typical amoral, narcissistic boomer. SC has a real winner in DeMint whose honor, in a region where such has meant everything, is quite intact. But Grahamnesty threw honor overboard when he decided to court the media and go RINO for national recognition. I wouldn't be surprised if SC rejected him in his next senate election just as NC rid itself of Edwards.

If McLaim chooses him out of political gratitude, he won't have to worry about conservatives holding their nose and voting for him - they won't even bother.

McLaim chooses him out of political grat
If McCain chooses either Pawlenty or Graham he will lose, even quicker if he chooses Pawlenty. McCain must bring someone in that will activate the base, including the religious right, and help him in California. Neither Graham or Pawlenty can do that. The news forced McCain on us as the candidate, and now wants to force the wrong VP on us as well.
