Will the Democrats have the time to read their own health care bill before voting on it?

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Desperate to save Mitt Romney's Republican presidential campaign in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, his advisers all wanted to attack Sen. John McCain but were divided about how to do it.

Coming out of his disappointing performance in the Iowa Caucuses, the Romney camp was united in the need to hit McCain hard for voting against President Bush's tax cuts. But the decision also to attack McCain's support for the liberal Bush immigration reform was opposed by a minority of Romney's advisers. These dissenters argued that Romney's hard line on immigration taken in Iowa did him no good there.

A footnote: The estimated 60 percent of New Hampshire "independents" who are Democratic-aligned voted for McCain in the 2000 Republican primary but are expected to be solid for Sen. Barack Obama in the Democratic primary this year. Nevertheless, McCain's strength with the remainder of the independents makes him the favorite against Romney on Tuesday.

SECOND PLACE HILLARY?

No sooner had Sen. Hillary Clinton slipped to a third-place finish in Iowa than her agents in Iowa were saying that their campaign would be content if she finished second in New Hampshire ahead of John Edwards and effectively drove him out of the race.

Those comments, in sharp contrast to Clinton's previous professions that her election as president was inevitable, constitute an attempt to lower expectations in New Hampshire. At the same time, Clinton has not abandoned hopes of defeating Obama in Tuesday's primary.

What Clinton cannot afford in New Hampshire, however, is another third-place finish behind Obama and Edwards.

HELP FOR HILLARY

Even before the bad news for Sen. Hillary Clinton was in from Iowa, two veteran Democratic political practitioners -- Chuck Campion and Joe Grandmaison -- were dispatched to New Hampshire to try to save her failing campaign.

Campion, a Massachusetts Democratic stalwart, long has been considered one of the Democratic Party's ace organizers. Not active until now in the 2008 campaign, Campion was a senior campaign aide for Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004.

Grandmaison long has been one of New Hampshire's top Democratic insiders. He now lives in Washington, D.C., where he is on the Export-Import Bank's board of directors.

WHITHER THOMPSON?

Published reports that Fred Thompson soon will withdraw from the Republican presidential contest and endorse Sen. John McCain have been traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign, trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson.

There is no question, however, that McCain strategists would welcome Thompson's endorsement if and when he drops out. It could help McCain in the Jan. 19 South Carolina primary.

A footnote: Out of money, the Thompson campaign took a unique approach to the Iowa Caucuses Thursday with a "blast" e-mail to the candidate's contributors: "Get out your Christmas card list, your PDA (personal digital assistant), your Rolodex -- any list you might have of families in Iowa. If you don't know anyone in Iowa, you can visit our Website and make calls today on Fred's behalf." Thompson finished third in Iowa, slightly ahead of McCain but far behind Mike Huckabee and Romney.

CAN RUDY LAST?

With Rudy Giuliani finishing a poor fifth in Iowa and figuring to be no better than third in New Hampshire, his campaign is telling Republicans to be patient and wait for the former mayor of New York to win in California, New York and New Jersey on Feb. 5.

Those three states will send 326 delegates to the Republican conventions, compared to 232 delegates from all the states voting prior to Feb. 5. Thus, Giuliani could get back in the race by grabbing a big share of the California-New York-New Jersey jackpot.

The question is whether Giuliani will be viable on Feb. 5 if he fails to win a primary before then. His best chance for an early win will be in Florida on Jan. 29.

Novak isn't supporting ANYONE -- it's not his style, and he just predicts finishes based on the information available at the time....
Suggestion -- read his excellent book, "Prince Of Darkness" -- superb reading!

Almost unbelievable - - -
- - almost. The way that too many people, unfortunately, delude themselves into thinking that Fred, Mitt or that Huckabee guy can best serve this country. McCain? Or the demented Democrats, Obama, Edwards and Obama, all socialists/Marxists?
My God, has the world gone totally nuts?!?
Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney are such pandering whores, it boggles the mind!
No amount of stemcell opinions, anti-Choice and gay crap can take the place of Our Country's Simple SURVIVAL in the order of priorities...
Thus, very candidly, there is No One I could vote for other than Rudy Giuliani, no one!!!
Just watching Huckabee with Chris Wallace on Fox. I want to throw-up! The absolute jerk!
God forbid he gets the nomination! Sad.

for jerabaub
jerabaub writes: "They don't believe it was worth the cost in lives and money, and again, whether the surge is successful is a moot point with them."

Now THAT is going a little too far.

Even the moderate Democrats don't think that the success of the surge is a "moot point." Independents are certainly happy to see our troops winning for a change, and Iraq quieting down.

They just don't think that what we achieved in the war was worth the cost we paid.

And neither do I.

No one wants to see Islamist terrorism defeated more than I do. I made that my absolute top political priority when I got to see 9-11 unfolding live on TV.

But there are far more cost-effective ways to fight Islamist terrorism than to imagine that an "Islamic Democracy" (whatever that means) in Iraq, to be achieved at any cost in blood and treasure, is some kind of magical beacon that will cause terrorism to melt away.

Islamic terrorism didn't originate in Iraq, despite what some neo-conservatives thought.

And it won't end there.

EM: sam DIDN'T REALLY post that, did he?

"Maybe I'm talking in circles but those circles have a point."

I know the year is new... only Jan. 6th, but THAT statement could very easily already be on the TH list of truly stupid, vapid, inane statements of 2008!

In fact, I just asked my 4yr. old grandson if circles had points, and he looked at me as if I had three heads!

And no, I wasn’t trolling for trolls. Honest. In fact, on Will’s column I even posted to you:

Anne: Were You Trolling for Trolls?
Try as I might, I couldn't find one round sharp thing or one point on a circle. I looked at the bowling ball, no point. I looked at knives they weren't round. Perhaps Sam has created a new theory of topology.

In logic and math, circular reasoning (Sam is coming close) is a derisive term that means there is no point to the argument. Hmmmmm.

I wonder what he is talking about? If you figure it out, let me know.

Answer the question

Maybe I'm talking in circles but those circles have a point

Anne.Don't You Know That McCain wrote it
McCain was the author of the Amnesty Bill that the American People overwhelmingly rejected!! Didn't you know that?

Life was pleasant when the vile

paulists were back in their paul-cave licking their wounds after the Iowa caucus...

Paul is a piece of trash! (Good enough for McCain, certainly good enough for paul!) You know what they say, "What goes around, comes around." and it's that "coming around" part that's a real bear! :-)

And the way the paulists have been behaving, they're going to be seeing A LOT of that "coming around" thing... Get ready children!

Night! :-)

Anne is a Neocon plant!!
If you notice, she and her buddies always suck up to the NEOCONS. She always defends the NEOCON position. I don't believe she knows that NEOCONS are Conservative frauds.

Of course if you get paid to be a hired gun like I believe she does then you would not say anything about the paymasters. LOL

Sam, all you do is talk in circles....

and make no sense what so ever!!!!

How do YOU KNOW that Thomspons DOESN'T understand monetary policy?

I'm not in the equation... it's THOMPSON. And you DON'T KNOW that he does or does not understand.

And you DON'T KNOW that paul is the only one who can beat the demos in Nov. Just more and more of the paulist's worthless, empty, vile propaganda.

I'm not McCain fan, but for you or anyone to call McCain a "pro-amnesty piece of garbage, 70 year old diaper bed wetting John McCain." is typical of you low life, ignorant paulbots.

And, oh yeah, how old is paul???? You'd best be careful about calling anyone "an old diaper bed wetting anything...." Isn't paul the OLDEST candidate????? Be careful!!!! :-)

And point on, how do you KNOW that paul does know. You don't! You're just assuming he does.

Debate
The liberal axis ganged up on Mitt and he stood them down. Go Mitt!

Beeblebrox: Agreed about Thompson!

This is a great little clip of Thompson's answers during the Iowa debate, and there is also another video clip of the post Iowa caucus a few days ago.

http://blip.tv/file/577345

It's worth watching again... and notice the approval lines (Fund)... Fred nails it every time!

I don't see Watts/Thompson, but I do see...eagerly... Thompson/Watts for just the reasons mentioned above. Watts would be absolutely wonderful.

And for what it's worth, I'm STILL mad at Watts for leaving Congress! :-( (Biggest mistake FOX ever made was NOT to pick up Watts two minutes after he announced that he was leaving Congress.)

Romney dirty trick
If Novak is correct then Romney doesn't deserve to be POTUS. That kind of dirty trick should be punished.

Furthermore, what does Romney have in the way of conservative bona fides that Thompson does not have.

This should be an easy choice people. Only Fred can win in November because only he can unite all three conservative groups.

So Sam, just exactly how do you know

that Fred Thompson doesn't understand monetary policy? Of course, you know that for a fact, and have proof, right????

Oh, and how are you so sure that paul really knows anything about monetary policy?

And if you want to know the truth, paul is a piece of trash.

Debate
Only Fred and Mitt look presidential. I think Mitt took a lot of low blows and stood up with class.

Gee aslan: You posting this on EVERY

thread?

One soldier.. "tells it like it really is..." Umm?

How about a lot of soldiers talking about paul?

That would be good too, right?

RON PAUL VS HUCKABEE AND McCAIN !!
A Soldier fighting in Iraq tells it like it really is and why Huckabee and McCain are frauds.

Sarah's wrong!
I know at least a dozen GOPer in CA that if Huck or McCain are our candidates then they'd rather see a Democrat screw the country up. BTW, that means if Rudy picks Huck as VP too.

Security candidate
Policies which lead to weapons system proliferation by Russia and China, as we've seen under Bush; policies which spread our troops around the world with ill-advised military adventures; policies which contribute to bankrupting our nation with supplemental military spending far beyond an already bloated defense budget are not logical security policies.

Candidates who promote these policies are not security candidates. They are puppets of the military industrial complex.

Predictions about winning in November
NH nominates McCaine. The rest of the states split between McCaine, Rudy and Huckster (Romney finishes 3rd/4th most of the time). Republicans end up with a ticket of one candidate who is strong on the pro-life message and on security. Fiscal conservatives will always vote republican because on a bad day, a republican's policy on tax is better than a democrats (so we don't need to fight for this group hard). Keeping republicans pro-life and strong on security will defeat Hillay or Obama in the fall. If we put a pro-choice candidate (Rudy) on the ticket or a newly-born-again conservative who has waffled on abortion (Romney), we will loose 80% of social conservatives who will stay home, 85% of evangelicals, and all minorities who tend to be very pro-life and earn less than %50k. The democrats can't beat a pro-life/security candidacy in November.

IF CLAMS WERE VOTING

.....ELVIS ...I agree! .....COLOSSUS

Boo Hoo Hoo
Mitt is negative! Gee whiz - has anyone taken a look at the liberal web sites? McCain and Huckster supporters are whimps just begging for a beating from the liberal gutter machine.

Error in column - Rudy 6th, not 5th ...
Novak writes that Rudy finished fifth in Iowa. He actually finished sixth. Dr. Ron Paul was fifth, with 10 percent of vote to Rudy's 3.5 percent. Paul, who is as anti enthanol subsidies as you can be, was just 3 points behind McCain and Thompson. Pretty strong for someone who was at 0 percent a half year ago in that state.

Lastest Rasmusen (sp?) poll I just saw had Cong. Paul at 14 percent in N.H. - good for 3rd - still not good enough to earn him a seat at Fox's candidate "debate" Sunday night. Amazing! but probably a gift for Ron Paul and his message of limited government and adhering to the Constitution.

I am enjoying Mr. Novak's book, though!

mitt
this notion that divisive campaign tricks can't be used is nonsense. Perhaps the duel eunuchs oblahma and old huck think that they are such nice pricipled persons they can't get down and dirty but the nature of politics these days is comprimise don't work especially with the dims. No matter how many times they lose they are more akin to cockroaches that keep creeping from under the woodwork. If pelosi and reid return as leaders in congress I wanty somebody around to essentially B*tch slap them weekly and whenever they don't do their job for the country. Old huck and oblahma want too many people to like them to take a stand. We suffred eight years of an indecisive bubba. Dangerous days in a dangerous woprld demands we have a leader willing to take a stand and not worry about whether or not swimmer kennedy approves

Mitt Romney's latest dirty tricks...
Mr. Novak points out that the false rumors of Thompson stepping down "have been traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign, trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson." He can claim that his other lies are contrasting, but this is just dirty. And when we find out that he is behind the push polling, we will not be surprised. Romney is not only dishonest about his own views and stances, but he is willing to do anything to disparage the other candidates. What a lousy human-being, forget presidential candidate.

Hope
Lets hope NH puts an end to McCain. He could never beat Obama. McCain still supports amnesty and he must go. No matter what else you may like about him - he must pay for his willingness to pander to the illegal aliens.

Romney
can and should air contrast issues ad and let voters decide. Ignore those who respond calling them negative ads which is what is being done.

Explain why Huckabee labeling Romney "dishonest" but not refuting Romney's ads is OK with evangelicals who seem to see what they want to see.

I sense MSM is heqvily covering Huckabee and spinning him in order to see him nominated and defeated.

I keep reading about voters wanting change and Obama and Huckabee offer change. No one anwaers, however, what change exactly do voters want?????
Left to Obama, and leftish to Huckabee?

Novak
1.) Rudy did not finish fifth in Iowa. He finished sixth. The first five were: Huckabee, Romney, Thompson, McCain, Paul.

2.) Rasmussen released a poll today showing Hillary 10 points behind in New Hampshire. Unless Obama has a MAJOR stumble tonight and she doesn't, he will win New Hampshire and go on to win the Democrat nomination.

3.) Thompson finished third, and has no reason to be disappointed when he's had no media coverage. He still edged out McCain, who was being heavily promoted in the end days to Iowa as possibly managing to win both of the first two contests.

4.) Voters in New Hampshire can only vote in one contest. Both Obama and McCain heavily rely on independents. Which way they break will determine whether Clinton and McCain take the day, or Obama and Romney do. It is possible for Obama and McCain to both win, and I think nigh impossible for Clinton and Romney to both win.

baseball doc..and others
hey doc...since when is the average voter is as smart as a clam! my vote is for the clam!romney has referenced every so-called negative ad to facts! and mc cain says it aint so! bull,mc cain! i heard romney on many details..concerning trade and business matters..and many other things..i mean details! he is very SMART! but we dont want brains in the white house...we want good ol boys career politicians! mc cain says romney doesnt have international and foreign affairs experience...they said that about reagan, too! duh! the person who said or inferred that romney would hold his delagates for a cabinet position..excuse me? he is worth about 300 million..he doesnt need a cabinet position! he may end up with the best cabinet postion--president! no wait a minute..the voters want a clam like john!the surge is working..then elect colin powell..he always says if your going to war ..go all out! or dont go at all! elvis

Didn't mean it to apply to all.
I said this...

"Christians don't act like that in MY neck of the woods, but it seems to be pretty common in Arkansas and Iowa."

and did not mean it to apply to everyone from that area, I take each person on his or her own merits. Huckabee only won 47% of the evangelical vote and even some of them didn't really know what all he's been up to, either, so it wouldn't apply. Only those who knew he's been dishonest and didn't care and there were plenty of them around, too. Whereby their fruits, etc. Mine, too. We're all accountable, no matter what we call ourselves or claim to be. And until Huckabee apologizes to Romney for slamming him on not signing a bill on cloning/embryonic stem cell research and stopping gay marriage, I will not accept his apology for saying he never should have told a rapist/murderer that he hoped he'd be set free, no matter what his victims wrote. This man did threaten to kill babies of the rape victims if they told, too, and Huckabee knew that. Romney never did anything like that, so get real.

Talk about "DOUBLE MINDED"--Huckabee
has *two faces* which he talks out of. A few days ago he *pretended* to take the high road, by pulling a negative (anti-Romney) ad--and then showed it to all the reporters (who then broadcast it FREE all over the state).

One of the anti-Romney points in the "pulled" ad was that Romney did not execute anyone. Well, DUH, since Massachusetts has no death penalty! Huckabee also blamed Romney for the MA health care plan including abortion, while the ACTUAL PLAN which Governor Romney signed had no abortion benefit.

It was the COURT that mandated and inserted the abortion benefit. Every ACTION which Romney took--his DEEDS rather than past words--was *firmly* on the "pro-life" side, such as vetoing embryonic stem cell research paid for by government.

McCain & Huckabee are security risks.
During his run against Bush, McCain told a reporter the first thing he'd do as president would be to go in and get Sadaam Hussein. This was before 9-11. He also sang "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" during this campaign. John McCain is running his platform on security, yet his own bad temper and lack of control over his big mouth could be a security risk for us, no matter how much we spend on defense. The same can be said for Huckabee, who has had to apologize repeatedly for his own outrageous comments and behavior. Both of them are thin skinned, bad tempered, and have been lying repeatedly about Romney. They do make a nice couple and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if they are intending to run together. If they do, the Repubs can kiss my grits good bye. That is also why the liberal media is pumping those two to the max, they know some people have their limits, regardless of party affiliation, even if they don't.

In context
>Iran is not a big problem<

Standing alone, that statement is true. However, in conjunction with China and, especially, Russia, Iran is a problem.

Americans like to think that we won the Cold War, and that Russia is now a paper tiger with no claws.
The reality is that Russia is poised economically to become one of the planet's major economic powers, as is China.
While the military industrial complex in this country wants us to believe that Islamics are the threat to western security, anyone with a realistic view of global politics realizes that it's Russia and China that pose the only real threat to the west, both militarily and economically.

Beans for brains...
Pinto Man writes:

"Novak can't get it right. Romney is a loser."

Based on what? Beating the pants off every well known candidate in Iowa, except the one who told evangelicals if they didn't vote for Huckabee, it would have a "chilling effect" on any other evangelical running? Huckabee's campaign is already having a chilling effect on anyone else who wants to run as an evangelical, because he's been running such a two faced, hypocritical campaign against such a decent man like Romney and so many of them don't seem to care. Christians don't act like that in MY neck of the woods, but it seems to be pretty common in Arkansas and Iowa. Are those the churches who were paying Huckabee $25,000 a shot to speak, then asking for clemency for murderers and rapists?

Use McCain's own dishonesty...
This morning, McCain's spokesperson Jill Hazelbaker was quoted in the NY Times trying to lie about Mitt Romney's very well known successes in business, the Olympics, what he did as governor, etc...

“It is laughable that Mitt Romney would think anyone buys his latest act as an agent of change, when the only thing he’s ever changed are his positions on every issue of importance in this election.”

I buy Romney's record over McCain's, thank you, anyway. :)

Waterboarding
Democrats want laws against waterboarding, just like they want any laws that can impead anything conservatives would want to do. Because to Democrats, conservatives are the biggest enemy. But in the end, to them laws are only to control conservative behavior. If it would serve their purpose, the Democrats would break any law in an instant.

McCain
I wish someone would clarify for me. Early in his Presidency Bush had been saying that Iran was one of the three countries in the Axis Of Evil. It wasn't untill a few years after that McCain said "Who knew Iran was going to be such a problem" I think McCain is out of touch.

McCains bill for finance reform basically improved nothing in finance reform. How can anybody be so out of touch with what could trully work in that area.

Did McCain trully think that his immagration bill was any good? I didn't, and I haven't heard him expain why I should think different.

I'd like to support McCain, but I think he panders way too much, and I think he is out of touch with what works, and what can be implemented that does work.

the mood of the body politic
The Iowa votes for the Huckster were mainly evangelicals (60% of caucus goers) based on "moral values"... both he and Obama represent fresh faces... people are sick to death of Presidente Jorge, and weary of the Clintonistas. Close scrutiny of the Huckster's REAL track record and positions will cause him to slide.

Sen. Juan McQuisling has surged because Mitt meanders terribly, Fred seems not to have been ready for prime time (though his positions are excellent), and the war news has finally become less disappointing. Also, the MSM has willfully dismissed Fred T., Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul. I like what Fred SAYS, though I fear that he has been a stalking horse for the ILLEGAL-loving McQuisling.

http://mediacom.mediacomtoday.com/community/
http://www.fred08.com/Index.aspx

Some have posited that Iowa did not indicate a dire concern about ILLEGAL aliens. Actually, it was simply not a key topic. Regularization Rudy, the Huckster, and the others have been born again border enforcement guys recently... even Scamnesty Bill sponsor Sen. Juan McQuisling says, "I got the message" (Middle America is ANGRY/righteously indignant about ILLEGALS). Shrillary was nearly mortally wounded in the recent debate when she let her guard down and revealed that the left wants to give ILLEGALS the vote thru the motor voter fraud shell game (licenses for ILLEGALS).

Mitt double minded??????
I may be wrong but I see Mitt mostly as a business man. On the order of some one who runs Toyota. He can present both sides of an arguement and decide the best way forward. As opposed to the people who run GM who only see one way forward. Who is more successful?? Toyota or GM. Thats not double minded to me. It's openminded. But open minded is only good if it bears good fruit.

Your post raises some compelling issues.

I agree with your observation, even if based on anecdotal evidence, that independents are extremely opposed to Iraq...they HATE this war... and it matters not one iota whether the "surge" works or not.

They will break very heavily for democrats in the election, altho Ron paul and even McCain might peel off a few of them(Yes, McCain is for the "surge" but independents at least recognize McCain had the judgment to understand the necessity for far more troops from the beginning, unlike our clueless president).

They don't like this war. Originally, they only were against the manner in which it was being (mis)managed by the administration. Now, they oppose it, period.

They don't believe it was worth the cost in lives and money, and again, whether the surge is successful is a moot point with them.

And they blame Bush for getting us into this thing in the first place, even if lots of democrats voted for authorization to use military force.

They will break very heavily for the democrats in this election, and that is just the way it is.

Baseballdoc
ditto what you said!!!!

On McCain and waterboarding
Although I certainly regard John McCain as an honorable man, I don't believe he's the right man to be Commander in Chief. I think he's just too scarred by his experience as a POW to be able to make tough decisions in the kind of conflict the U.S. is in now. The jihadi forces the U.S. faces now will no more reciprocate any Geneva Convention consideration America shows to their captured forces if they manage to grab any of our boys than the North Vietnamese reciprocated it to our POW's even though we extended Geneva Convention considerations to its captured combatants. The terrorists we fight now already have abundantly proved - well before any American boots were on the ground in Iraq - that they don't need any excuses to be barbarians. In fact, I wonder if it's ever occurred to McCain that the open door he pushed for years ago to North Vietnam on the part of the U.S. - without putting any preconditions or demands on making North Vietnam answer for its abuse of our POW's - only encourages enemy forces we find ourselves up against to ignore any semblance of Geneva Convention consideration. McCain's open-door attitude to North Vietnam only reinforced the message to all potential future U.S. combat opponents that regardless of what you do to our boys, you won't have to worry about facing any punishment for it.
And regarding waterboarding or any other coerced interrogation technique, I'll put the issue simply: if a terrorist group captured your loved ones and the government came to you and said it had in custody an associate or someone else (not a U.S. citizen) who could potentially provide valuable information that could aid in a rescue but was stubbornly silent, and the government gave you the power to decide if coercive interrogation techniques would be used on him to try to induce him to talk, what would you decide? The issue is simply which is more important to you: the lives of your loved ones or sparing a terrorist some TEMPORARY discomfort.

History Repeats Itself
Here we go again, Mitt is going to squash McCain in NH. Wasnt there similar talk about Mitt squashing Huckabee in Iowa? Mitt is going nowhere except home!

Romney and Iowa
The reality is that Romney should be pleased with his 25% second place Iowa result. This isn't exactly the state where a blue-blood Republican should do well against an evangelical populist, regardless of the money spent.

I suspect Romney will do well in California and other western states as well as the Northeast. It looks like every delegate will be golden for Republican aspirirants. Romney's biggest problem may be that none of the other candidates will suggest their delegates move into his camp.

Whoever survives between McCain and Thompson will get the other's delegates. Between that person and Giuliani, the survivor likely gets the delegates.

Romney and Huckabee may be the odd men out, but they can possibly leverage their delegates for promises of cabinet positions.

Rawmoney Strategy: Spend cash, look good
Ron Paul took over 10% in the Iowa caucus, handily beating Rudy Giuliani and finishing right behind both Fred Thompson and John McCain. This despite that Rudy Giuliani made more visits to Iowa than Ron Paul. And, entrance polls showed that Ron Paul took first place (29%) among independent Republicans!

ROMNEY'S QUANDARY

.....Why not run a menu of McCain's record and let the voters decide? ...

...1. Voted to not drill in Anwar ...

...2. Voted against Bush tax cuts ...

...3. Co-authored McCain/Feingold ...

...4. Co-authored Kennedy/McCain ...

...5. Is against water boarding as an interegation tool ...

...6. Want to close Guatanamo and run terrorists through our judicial system ...

...7. Buys into Global Warming regulations ...

What makes McCain a hero?
I cannot see any thing heroic about his history except he spent 5 years in a POW camp and has supported Bush in the Iraq War. But are these two things enough to put the label of hero on him. McCain-Feingold and his over-whelming support of Amnesty makes him a no-win in my opinion. How Americans can support this man after last Summer's Amnesty bill and the anger he showed over the Amnesty Bill's downfall is beyond me. This man is shell-shocked from being a POW and will not keep us safe. It's a terrible thing he spent so many years imprisioned by the Vietnamese but this doesn't make him a good candidate for President, just as Hucklebee's being a Baptist minister and a Christian make him the better man for the job. If we have to settle for people like Obama, Hillary, Guiliani, McCain, or Hucklebee then I fear for this country.

Pain
Understated at this point, is the fact that as long as the GOP keeps McCain, Romney, Guiliani, Huckabee and Thompson in the race, the votes will be divided. And this favors Huckabee because he has a solid group within the GOP who vote for him because of his perceived moral position. As Iowa showed, they do not stress the other issues. This group is delivering South Carolina, and if in Florida, there are still five candidates in that race, he will almost certainly win there as well. It doesn't take a genius to do the math. Huckabee will get his 30%, the other 4 will divide up the other 70%.

If you aren't enthusiastic about Huckabee, then you need to pray thet at least two of the GOP candidates drop out before super Tuesday. I realize some are posting about Thompson. However, his campaign has yet to show that he has the base of support necessary to win any of the early primaries - and that will leave him starved for the money required to compete. Romney has the money to keep running, but his problem is that McCain and Guiliani look like they will stay in the race at least throught super tuesday - and that means that the vote will continue to be divided. And this will enable Huckabee to continue to do well in relationship to the others.

One writer posted that the idea of Huckabee, Guiliani and McCain makes him ill. Believe me, I understand his pain.

Anne
Good Morning Anne;

Yeah, my definition boils down to in general, if it is true then it is not an attack ad unless it has nothing to do with the office being sought.

Immigration
McCain-Kennedy.

CLUELESS

.....The typical voter is as cluless as a clam ...knows little about the issues and how they will change our Country, our future and our world ...they are like insects who cannot reason but only respond to stimuli ...

.....A populist preacher (Huckabee) and a new face who gives inspiring MLK type speeches gets on a podium and spews out platitudes and banalities and the crowd stands mesmerized like a snake before a snaker charmer ...

.....An Independent NH voter was asked his choice and he replied that he was wavering between Obama and McCain ...when asked what attracted him to those candidates he said that Obama would get us out of Iraq and that McCain seemed to be sincere ...I wonder if he knew that McCain was a bigger hawk than GW and certainly had no plans to pull the troops from Iraq? ...

.....With voters like this I sometimes wonder why I bother at all .....COLOSSUS

I live in northern Massachusetts, just over the NH border. I shop in NH all the time.

The folks in southern NH absolutely hate the Iraq War, and they hate Bush for having gotten us into that war. Remember that a lot of them are transplanted Massachusetts folks, social liberals who moved across the NH border to reduce their taxes and housing costs.

Obama will be popular with them, because he's been against that war from the beginning.

iowa
what else can iowa mean except that it is the first test to see how well your message has resonateds with the voters. Any candidate that can't fine tune or clarify gets lost in the shuffle. Iowa is vastly over rated but sdtill the excuses come out. The clintons alas make the most implausible of excuses to cover their sorry behinds. We hear that the miossus clinton was never ahead in iowa and never expected to do as well as she did. That she started out in with singal digit support and worked her way up. But the clinton's never want to face the truth that they were always in front until the very end and looked to iowa to start the road to the expected coronation. Now they are in NH prompting the same message that didn't work in iowa but are now saying they will be satisfied with a second place finish. We keep hearing this lame campaign strategy that she has 35 years of working for change but never hear the details of how she made a difference. The notion that she is battle tested is likewise absurd, any critisism directed her way always resulted in her assuming the role of victim. As for change, the only change that motivates her is change of residence. The mansions in wash and ny are nice but not the power base she lusts for.

Hey Vic: Good Morning! Spot on...

There is a difference between "smear ads" and "negative ads."

That is to say, what might be considered a "negative ad" could in fact be TRUE!

However, we too often hear "negative ads" that are either not true, or as you so aptly pointed out, a half-truth, or skewed, which to me (and I believe to a many others) is nothing more than a "smear ad."

If EVER, we need "truth in advertising" we need it in our election process.

Honesty
Mr. Novak,
We need honest, objective reporting to select a President. We don't need guys like you trying to manipulate the results. Thank God the people of Iowa didn't fall for all the false media and false ads.

You can influence guys like Rush, but the people of Iowa, who talked face to face with Huckabee cut through your propaganda.

We like what we see in Huckabee. I haven't met him, but I listen to what HE says, not what you guys say. He has a website. Thank goodness I don't have to rely on TV and newspapers and townhall columnists.

The TRUTH WILL SET US FREE.

jim bowie
That false rumor of Fred dropping out and going over to McShame has been tracked back to it's source in the Romney camp.

I do not believe
Independants in New hampshire who over-whelming supported McCain in 2000 are suddenly going to support a guy who refuses to wear the American flag on his lapel.

These are patriots with deep roots who recognize a true American hero when they see one and also are smart enough to see the threats to our country. The only man running with the experience and gravitas to lead this country at this unique time in our history is John McCain.

The good folks in NH will send a message on Tuesday that will propel McCain to the WH next year and we will all be better and safer for it.

Dead Fred
Mr. Boring is leaving so and tossing his votes to Mr. Maverick anti free speech(McCain/Feingold), pro war, pro amnesty, anti tax cuts McCain. Whopdeedo.
Mitt like Barrack is an empty suit who will do and say whatever he has to do to win votes.

As bad as he is Barrack is worse. Voting for Obama would be a vote for all republicans for Nancy, Harry, Barney, Charlie Rangel, and every tax and spend plan available. They would represent not a new deal but a raw deal for every small business, big business and wage earner in America. Soft on national defense, illegal immigration, raising taxes, pro government paid for abortions, pro big social programs and anti capitalist. All the makings of a banana republic, led by a man who looks good on tv but has a record with no legislation introduced and defined only by Oprah as the messiah for the United States. Scary.

No republican is this scary.

McCain-Feingold.

good analysis from Novak
McCain did not spend alot of time or money in Iowa. Romney did, yet lost.

I am not saying Romney is finished, far from it.

Giuliani did not spend time in Iowa either.

"Romniacs" can spin it anyway they wish, but the facts are not in dispute. He spent lots of resources in Iowa, and did not win.

On New Hampshire, Novak is correct that independents voted for McCain in 2000. Since Obama seems to be drawing large numbers of first-time voters and independents(in Iowa anyway), maybe independents will abandon McCain for Obama in New Hampshire and elsewhere.

Romney must win New Hampshire decisively, if for no other reason than all the money he is investing in his campaign, his being a former governor of a neighboring state, and with Obama peeling away some independents who might have gone for McCain.

Bouette, I agree with your comments on Rudy. I believe the neocons who gave such bad advice to Bush on Iraq have abandoned his administration, flocking to Giuliani's. That in itself is enough to turn me away from Rudy.

The logical heirs to Bush administration policies would be either Giuliani or Romney, which is precisely why I am leaning toward McCain, Ron Paul or even Huckabee..this despite McCain's support of the surge...at least McCain realized from the beginning that we needed far more troops(advice Bush ignored), even as I now disagree with going into Iraq in the first place.

Ron Paul is my sentimental favorite, but I will probably vote for McCain, although Huckabee is appealing if for no other reason than Rush Limbaugh hates him.

At any rate, I don't want a continuation of Bush policies.

I don't think the nation does either.

This is How Huckabee Wins?
First question;
- Who are his backers.
- SBC ministers and other coalitions
- Ministers remind members that Mitt is a Mormon.
- They claim they have noting against Mitt.
- They claim they are neither for or against Mitt.
- They reminder members that Mitt belongs to a cult and are not Christians
- A cult means other than God and Christ are worshiped. the Devils is the only alternate.
- Mormons preach another gospel and Galatians 1:8 which they say condemn their practice.

Next Question:
What is this other gospel?
- According to them the Gospel is centered in Jesus Christ and Faith in Him and Him alone, and nothing else.
- then they say nothing else is necessary, neither work, baptism, the law of Moses, obedience or anything else is necessary. Faith alone in Jesus Christ alone is all you need.
- Then they say, there are not may ways to heaven there is only one, and that is through Jesus Christ.
Everyone applauds heavily. I know because I have heard them. And I can prove it.

If their sermon was true and their arguments correct, I would say thus saith the Lord, But they are not true and I claim the right to a rebuttal on that fact. They are claiming that, The of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as corrupt, liars, and reprobates in the faith. Simply not true, not even in your imagination.

Because I am ignorant I must seek to know and understand. Because I am a law breaker I must be obedient to the law. Because I and in sin I must repent. All this I do with an eye single to the glory of God through Jesus Christ the Son of God, the only Begotten, a perfect man. Our roll model.

If I put my faith in Jesus Christ alone, and do not the other things can I really be saved, and serve and bless and glorify God and Jesus Christ? I cannot imagine how that can be. My faith grows as the spirit teaches me, the truth, enlarges my soul and expands my understanding through Jesus Christ. Amen!

Attack ads
Attack ads; LOL, this is another one of those terms that the pundits beat around like eggs for a soufflé. When you boil it down to how it is actually used by the political class what it means is…Any add my opponent uses that doesn’t make me look good.

Here is what the definition should be:

Any a political advertisement that:

1. Tells a lie about the target, or distorts the truth to the point that any reasonable person would assume a lie about the target.

Ex: An ad which says candidate X supports wife beating because he opposed a law increasing the penalty for wife beating. (The law would make wife beating a capitol offense but the add omits that.)

Not an Ex: An ad saying candidate X is soft on crime because he advocated early release of violent criminals from prison and actually had a record of doing that at a rate higher than most others in similar position.

Note that any ad that truthfully explores a candidate’s past political record is NOT an attack ad unless it distorts that record to the point that it is tantamount to a lie.

2. Tells negative stories about the target based on his or her personal life that have nothing at all to do with the office being sought.

Ex: An ad which speaks negatively about the candidate because they are divorced.

Not an Ex: An ad which speaks negatively about the candidate because he routinely cheats on his wife. (Shows he can not be trusted)

Opinions Mean Nothing- Lacking Substance
Opinions have no substance, coming from whom ever they may.

This truth in fact will prevail for eternity.

Opinions like hot air, are blown about as puffs of smoke on the wings of time, more over, if we build on them, on sand we build, to be destroyed by the storms and winds of time.

When our feelings rule our head, our feet are on shoddy ground. A Godly mind doeth meditate to shore up anchors of truth that glories in its solitude, uncomely passion subdued. Wherefore truth is not an opinion. Truths are anchors of the soul, as faith and confidence accepts in gratitude, all that divine providence bestows.

I can say that ignorance prevails in the minds of man who seek to justify dishonest immoral means they employ, which destroys their own self respect.

How can we believe an honest man, if our own corrupt mind abhors the words of truth, which condemns the strategy, we thought to justify.

Truth will singe the souls of men whose thoughts, dreams and deeds have been alter truth make virtue sin, self-destruction from within.

“There is no power but of God.” Godly power lies in the truth, and if we love him the love of truth will dwells within us. If the truth dwells within us; the light of God illuminates our soul, and who shall not see that light.

The life that we live, the words that we share, like a spiritual fountain, offer hope to those in darkness, freedom to captives of ignorance, greed, selfishness and sin. But if the salt hath lost its savor, it is herewith tossed out to be tread under by the foot of man.

When I see the truth denied, and deception exalted to make a trap, to exploit, take advantage and rule unrighteous over the life of man, the spirit of the Lord is grieved and sin lies at the door.

In these truths I rejoice. Amen.

Drawing the Line
I'm so tired of the personal attacks! I'm okay with contrast ads - I'm one of those strange people that thinks issues are relevant to campaigns. And while you have to always consider the source when viewing an attack ad, no one is more motivated to scrutinize a candidates' record than his or her opponent. That scrutiny is important and it's part of what makes our system successful.

That said, I'm tired of personal attacks. Criticism of a voting record or issues position is one thing. But character assassination is another. Words like "dishonest" and "phony" should not be used by candidates - they are personal attacks. They have no substance (kind of like Sarah's posts).

Romney can take the high ground now because he's steered clear of personal attacks. But if he tries to follow McCain and Huckabee down the low road, it will hurt more than it can ever help.

They have gotten away with it so far because Evangelicals are grasping for any excuse to dismiss the Mormon candidate. But hopefully voters in other states will be smarter than Iowa voters were.

Truehawk you are so wrong...
Mitt has never been the one to bring his religion into this campaign. He would rather keep it out as would most LDS-Mormons. As also would the Founding Fathers BTW. Mitt has ran on issues the entire campaign. Some ads are about his policies and then some ads are contrast ads that point out others weaknesses. I am not worried in the least bit about Mitt's campaign. I am also from AZ and think he should POUND McCain on immigration issues. In AZ last election we passed by an overwhelming majority tough immigration laws that McCain has fought against even in his own state!!!
Mitt is still on target. He may even come in second but I am not worried about that either. Would I have liked him to win Iowa? Of course. New Hamp? Of course. In Iowa he had the evangelicals come out in force and even in NH I don't consider that a true republican state not when anyone is allowed to register to vote how they want. Let's continue on and see how this plays out because alot of these guys are only going to win one state.
It's all good...

Misread 06 and 08
Well Bob, I gave you a two. You didn’t get a one because you did hit Clinton so the column wasn’t a complete loss. You and the other long term pundits are so in love with McShame. I’ve got news for you Bob, ya’ll are all so in love with Iowa and based on Iowa, McShame should drop out and all his supporters go to Fred. Regardless of what happened in Iowa and what may happen in Hew Hampshire, McShame will not do that good in SC. In addition, any Republican candidate who doesn’t remember the lessons from that immigration debacle will get blistered before it’s all over. You of the Washington elite misread the 06 elections and you are still misreading them now.

As for Shrillary, if she doesn’t at least tie for first place in NH she is toast. Even though she has bought up the black politicians in SC, Obama has shown that he can get white voters. That will probably be the most significant impact on black voters in SC regardless of what the so-called black leaders do or say. Blacks have longed for their candidate and only voted for someone like Hillary because they feared a Lamocrat loss in the end with worse results for them. (Even though even if the Lamocrat won it is still worse for them.) Now that Obama has demonstrated that he can draw a lot of white votes outside of urban settings, I think black voters in SC will flock to his banner.

Immigration
McCain has to be attacked by Romney on Immigration. Romney is the only true anti immigration candidate left. That creates a justification for his candidacy. It is also a wedge issue with independents and McCain was the leader of Amnesty.

In IA Huckabee had camped out there for 9 months. 60% of the voters were Evangelicals. 1/2 of them valued religion more than anything else. That is a set of conditions that will not exist in other states. Huck will be much more vulnerable to attacks going forward.

Romney can get a lot of the independents if he campaigns on immigration in NH.

I get sick to my stomach ...
every time I think there is a chance that Republicans will be represented by McCain, Rudy and Huckster.

Thompson's not out
Novak's been trying to write Fred off for some time now while unabashedly promoting the greasy McCain.

Even though it was disappointing that Thompson didn't do better than third in IA, he dispelled the media created myth that he's not willing to work for his points - and he didn't lie and pander like the Huckster, who won't do nearly as well in NH given it's paucity of 'born agains'.

The Huckster is a loser for the GOP and the Dems know it.

Novak Predicted a Romney Win
Novak, who kept writing puff pieces on Mitt while slamming Huckabee, is all part of the revival movement for lay preacher Mitt. (Yes, it was Mitt who preached about religious liberty not long ago, not Huck, in Mitt's thinly veiled attempt to manipulate the media into covering an event planned by Rich Lowry.) Novak then wrote one of those articles attempting to manipulate voter turnout by acting like a mysterious internal poll revealed to Novak that Mitt would win. The religious zeal is all on Mitt's side, with his evangelists like Rush and Hannity on the radio all day begging for converts.

Clueless Novak
Novak can't get it right. Romney is a loser.

Handicapping
Bet on the grey, Robert, bet on the grey.

Mitt lacks clarity on
all positions, is it any wonder he lacks a clear strategy? Mitt's only strategy is to re-direct voters to what is wrong with the other guy and then make up stories to divert voters from his inconsistent record. A DOUBLE MINDED MAN IS UNSTABLE IN ALL HIS WAYS - MITT IS DOUBLE MINDED ABOUT EVERYTHING!!!!!
