Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The issue of international trade has produced a tense internal Democratic confrontation between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Charles Rangel, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Rangel has succeeded in negotiating a compromise trade bill with Republicans on his committee (led by Rep. Jim McCrery) and the Bush administration. But Pelosi is attuned to the wishes of Democratic Caucus members, who are being pushed by organized labor to effectively bar imports produced by lower-wage labor.

Rangel's moderate position faces a challenge within the Ways and Means Committee from Rep. Sander Levin, chairman of the Trade subcommittee. Levin's Detroit-area district contains United Auto Workers members and pensioners who want trade protection.

AVOIDING A DEBATE?

Rep. Rahm Emanuel, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, pleaded a family commitment as the reason for turning down an invitation to debate his Republican counterpart on national television last weekend -- the third time since the first of the year that plans for them to face each other on TV have gone awry.

Rep. Adam Putnam, the 32-year-old chairman of the House Republican Conference, and the 47-year-old Emanuel are rising stars in their respective parties. But television producers have been unable to get them together, most recently on ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos.

Although Republican operatives have spread the word that Emanuel is avoiding Putnam, no such accusation has come from Putnam himself. Emanuel's staff says it is strictly a scheduling problem, and he will be face to face with Putnam before long.

PERLE ON IRAQ

Ex-CIA Director George Tenet had the date wrong but the message right when he said neo-conservative policymaker Richard Perle was advocating intervention in Iraq immediately after the 9/11 attack on America.

Tenet's memoir ("At the Center of the Storm") reports that Perle had advocated an assault on Iraq when they met at the White House on Sept. 12, 2001. But Perle let it be known last week that he was out of the country that day and never said what Tenet claimed.

However, over the telephone on Sept. 17, Perle told this column that there were few good targets in Afghanistan but many in Iraq. Perle, a former assistant secretary of defense, was then chairman of the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board.

LUCKY COLEMAN?

Political insiders believe first-term Republican Sen. Norm Coleman caught a break with the prospect that comedian and radio talk show host Al Franken will likely be his Democratic opponent for re-election next year.

Minnesota went largely blue in the 2006 elections, and the overriding Republican national outlook for 2008 is poor. However, Coleman leads Franken, a polarizing figure, by comfortable margins in all polls. Wealthy lawyer Mike Ciresi is also seeking the Democratic nomination, but Franken is equally well financed and is a favorite among anti-Bush activists.

A footnote: Republican Sen. Gordon Smith, considered vulnerable for re-election from the blue state of Oregon, also was fortunate in losing his toughest Democratic potential foe. Rep. Pete DeFazio decided instead to stay in the House, where he is chairman of a Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee.

BILL'S BLACKS

With Sen. Hillary Clinton battling Sen. Barack Obama for the African-American vote, Bill Clinton has been named honorary chairman of the 15th annual Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Golf and Tennis Tournament next month.

The "two-day retreat" June 24 and 25 will be held at the Landsdowne Resort in Landsdowne, Va., 35 miles from Washington. The charity event to fund college scholarships will simultaneously hold golf, tennis and whist competitions.

On April 20, lobbyists and other contributors to African-American members of Congress received a mailing: "Just a reminder that you have less than 40 working days (Monday-Friday) to register [for the tournament]."

As Will Rogers said:
"With Congress, every time they make a joke it's a law, and every time they make a law, ..."

Why add one more comedian?

Racism and Race Hustlers
Can you furnish the dates for the White Caucus, as well as those for the Yellow-Tone-Skin, and Neutral-Color Caucus outings? Each time I see the Clintons connected to black events and places, my thoughts note the racism connected with those two people. Bill Clinton should have shook off this connection when it started but he likes it and she wants to be the 2nd best black president. That is not only pandering but it promotes racism. Does the White Caucus vote Democrat or Republican?

TeeHall
What a great comment! White Caucas and how it votes ..I've thought of it myself. Why doesn't THIS obvious question come up more often?!!!

What do you think

What do you think about Hillary's faux southern accent?

What is even more
amusing is after all the pandering to blacks, the Clintons are going to be thrown under the bus when it comes time to vote. The blacks will go for Barack, and well they should. Blood is always thicker than water.

Clinton fools no blacks with his "first black president" shucking and jiving. The blacks want a genuine first black president and they stand a good chance of getting one if they don't vote for old Hillery.

I can't remember when I've had more fun watching politicians. Hehehehe.

Hill
is the new black woman who wants to be president. What's the matter don't you all see her blackness. Bill did it much better and managed to make blacks think he was their hero. Got it give it to him for pulling one of the biggest con jobs ever in politics.

I just posted Chapter 18 of Juliet's diary. Michael Moore takes a beating.

Bob keeps hanging them out to dry
Wow, it only took Bob Novak 5 working days to correct the record, save Tenet, and hang Perle (who told no lie about his whereabouts).

Yet, he let Scooter Libby, Karl Rove, et al hang in the wind for years, while feeding the moonbat left's conspiracy theories about this administration.

Then, Bob, has the gall to keep writing about the "very unpopular war", "the weak president", etc. Bob, you helped cause these things!!! Nice of you to suddenly become a truth-teller in setting records straight. As Reagan said about Carter, "Job well done", Bob.

Nancy
Keep up the good reporting Bob...Pelosi is a joke...Charlie is a few cards short...he's a veteran like me, so I won't trash him now...Grandmaster Ro

Tax and Trade Charade
The Democrats miss the real reason our workers cannot compete in the world market: Our incredibly unfair, non-border adjustable corporate tax scheme. To add insult to injury, we inflict the second highest corporate income tax in the OECD. We shoot our workers in the foot, then wonder why the products they produce effectively limp into the world market. This is insane.

.....getting out of the WTO and adopting John Linder's H.R. 25 "Fair Tax" would solve a lot of this problem but what are the chances of that? .....COLOSSUS

Betty, baseballdoc
Good luck getting Congress to do anything that benefits corporations, which are all Evil.

They've spent years convincing Working Americans that any tax on corporations, the higher the better, punishes "corporations." Apparently these Working Americans believe that the tax will be paid by the Overpaid CEO (if it has ever even occurred to them that some PERSON(S)--worker, shareholder or customer--will pay the tax).

Sure the "Fair Tax" would solve the problem, but it just takes toooooo much power away from the politicians. Ain't happenin'.

Novak: Poppycock
Bob Novak: Can you spell the word "poppycock?"

On my TH site (click on name above), I'll be writing soon on why I believe Robert Novak has outlived his usefulness for conservatives and is essentially carrying water for the Democrats. In the past six days, 820 people have read my daily columns, 230 of them yesterday, including my in-depth, MSM-free analysis of the Republican debate. Please come and visit.

Black Caucus SPOUSES Tournament?...
I don't think I'd let MY wife go.

PERLE ON IRAQ
Sorry Mr. Novak, but Perle on Iraq doesn't save "Slam dunk" Tenet from deserved blame for Iraq!

steve
lol, only poopycock i see if from u wannabe.

Fair Tax
How can the word about the Fair Tax Amendment get out to the people? A change in our tax laws MUST happen. Call and write your congressperson.

TEEHALL
I agree...it is time to end all "special interest" caucuses - they have no place in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! There is only ONE category of Congressional membership and that is that the member be an AMERICAN! I don't want to know if they are black, yellow, green or purple...just that they love our country and are willing and able to represent their constituents, NOT their own special interest group!

You People Hate So Much
Townhall.com is using the southern strategy. They are using your Fear and Hatred of Blacks, so that you will continue to support the Republican Party. That’s why most of their articles about minorities are negative.

When I was young my grandfather would say “If you want to control people give them something to fear or hate”. This statement has been true throughout history, from Hitler to current day Terrorist. It funny how our domestic (KKK) and foreign Terrorist are both driven by hatred.

It's funny how No one Hates a Slave. But a Free Man is always Hated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Strategy

yo dix
so what does that say about your hate for the rich and successful? your hate of anglo history? how about you hate of the right wing? teach us oh lefty, you are the authority on hate

For Dixiecrat
Actually, most conservative don't write negative articles about minorities. That's because we seldom write about minorities at all.

We tend to write (and talk) about "people" instead. You know what "people" are. "People" are what you get when you stop being a bigot by assuming everyone must be categorized into some ethno- or religious- or gender- centric slot.

When the subject of "minorities" does come up in conservative think piece it is almost always in reaction or response to some bigotted pandering by the left, as with the posts you are responding to and the discussion in Novak's column.

Conservatives don't pander to minorities because we don't feel guilty about them. And we don't feel guilty about them because we haven't done anything to them. We know we haven't done anything to them because to us they are not "minorities". They are "people" (Are you starting to get the drift?).

Any liberal who figures this out makes great progress in his personal growth. That's why most liberals who do figure it out soon become conservatives.

Hill and Bill and being black
Bill Clinton was identified by author Toni Morrison as America's first black President because of the circumstances in which he was born and raised, not because of any affinity he had for black people.

Slick Willie was born and raised by a single mom without the benefit of a father, or even a father figure. He also grew up in relative poverty.

These are circumstances that many blacks in America can identify with. But more to Morrison's point, American blacks can much more easily identify with Bill Clinton than they can with any of your typical whitebread Presidents or candidates like the Bushes, Giuliani, McCain, Edwards, Gore, or...Hillary!
