Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- The reason given by the White House for President Bush missing the 122nd annual Washington Gridiron dinner March 31 is that he will entertain Brazil's President Lula da Silva that weekend. But a key adviser urged him six weeks ago to skip the gathering of the journalists club.

The adviser attended the Jan. 27 Alfalfa dinner in Washington and was struck by the "tepid" greeting given the president by the elite audience. If an audience presumed friendly to Bush was cool, he feared the reception from hostile newsies.

Vice President Dick Cheney cleared up a schedule conflict so that he could substitute for the president at the Gridiron dinner. RUN, FRED, RUN

Close friends of Fred Thompson say his wife Jeri is urging him to take the plunge later this year and run for the Republican presidential nomination.

The former senator from Tennessee and current actor on "Law & Order," in private conversation, makes it clear that he is seriously interested in launching a candidacy that has attracted extraordinary attention over the last two weeks. However, he does not plan to announce his candidacy in the immediate future.

The major rap against Thompson is that he was not a hard worker during his eight years in the Senate. His friends respond that this is an easily correctable error and that the same complaint was made about Ronald Reagan before he ran for president.

BARACK BLOOPER?

Supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign continue to pound away at Sen. Barack Obama, two weeks after the fact, for saying "nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people." That is why, Obama said, he hopes for "a loosening up" of aid restrictions to the Palestinian people.

Clinton backers say this was not a conscious effort by Obama to display his political independence, much as Bill Clinton separated himself from black activists in the 1992 campaign "Sister Souljah" incident. They contend that Obama committed a blooper that revealed him as a novice who cannot go the distance in a presidential campaign.

Behind Clintonites harping on this incident is the political danger risked by any Democrat displaying sympathy for the Palestinian cause, as Hillary Clinton did when she was first lady.

WELCOME BACK, TRENT

Sen. Trent Lott has made a triumphal return from backbench obscurity to front-row leadership as Senate Republican whip, making himself essential to the party's leadership now in minority status.

Rank-and-file GOP senators see Mitch McConnell as far preferable to the departed Bill Frist as the party's leader in the Senate. But they consider Lott the invaluable wise old hand with experience working in a Republican minority. He was House minority whip in 1981-1988 and was elected Senate majority whip after the 1994 elections before becoming majority leader in 1996.

The irony of Lott's political resurrection is that he was forced out as majority leader in December 2002 thanks to loss of support from President George W. Bush, who is now held in low esteem by Republican senators.

LOUISIANA HAYRIDE

The decision by Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco not to seek re-election this year leaves the state's Democrats high and dry, uncertain whether former Sen. John Breaux will launch a late candidacy with no campaign money yet raised.

Louisiana Democrats are stunned that Blanco did not make a deal with Breaux to try to succeed her before she bowed out. The only record of fund-raising this year by Breaux, a multimillionaire Washington lobbyist, is an event for Blanco last month.

Blanco narrowly defeated Republican Bobby Jindal in 2003. But she has trailed Jindal, now a member of Congress, badly in the polls following her much criticized handling of Hurricane Katrina. Breaux, a popular figure during 32 years' service in the House and Senate, is the only Democrat given a chance to defeat Jindal (though one poll shows him also losing).

Fred's Electable, Stands up to Mexico
Fred's not perfect (he voted for McCain-Feingold), but he appears to be the best available Republican with a good shot at getting nominated and Elected. He would stand up to Mexico and our enemies, including China.

duncan hunter
Puffery is recognizable to this old wordsmith. When I was 64, I was still younger than the magnificent (by virtue of his record) Ronald Reagan was when sworn in. So I can't hold a person's age against him. But I believe that when we already have a man in the race who can be the best President since Reagan; the waters needn't be muddied by comment from Robert Novak, et al, that the Conservatives have no credible candidate running as yet. Duncan Hunter has been industriously at work in congress since 1980. He has worked to good effect. Check his record and stance on Trade, Immigration and Security. All due credit to Senator Thompson for his past endeavors; but Duncan Hunter is the only candidate who will get my support and vote.

my bad
Arthritic fingers make typing mistakes: Should have read "do no harm," not "so no harm."

Yes!
Until now, the only candidate I've been interested in is Duncan Hunter. I'd be more than happy to cast a vote for Fred Thompson, since I've been a long-time admirer of his. It never bothered me that he didn't make a big splash in the Senate. I'd rather have a legislator listen and think and so no harm than make a lot of noise and try to ruin this country ala Kennedy, Pelosi, et al.

baseballdoc:
Rest your fears. If the man is healthy now, he'll be healthy later. A person in their 70s in this day and age is just as healthy and robust as a 50-year-old was in the past. Youth is not always an indicator of good health (JFK).

killer:

If you followed the rules of spelling and punctuation that you should have learned in school (unless you went to a public school) your rants would be easier to read and understand. If I get it right, business is bad and Hugo Chavez is good. If this is true, you probably need a vacation...a long one (one way) down south...very very down south.

Fred's Candidacy
I love it... The liberals and nay sayers are already trying to trumpet negative mantra. The libs are wetting their pants at the prospect of Fred running. They know he'll bring it in on a landslide and their hopes of judicial legislation will be gone for our lifetime. The entire world is watching the conservative movement resurrection. Run Fred, your country needs you and the libs are too hate filled to realize that they need you as well. You can cure the country.

Known the name Fred since late 60's
In the 60's and early 70's we played music for anyone who would listen to our rock group.None of us were older than 15.We got a gig at a political rally for Gov. Ray Blanton(D) of Tennessee. We played for about 3000 people that day and if I weren't 13 years old, I would've voted for Gov. Blanton(D).He had a great speech and sounded good to a 13 yr. old.He won the election anyway. Enter Fred Thompson- Turns out,The good Democratic Governor was selling Pardons for cash money, at request.Fred Thompson was the Attorney General here in TN who went after him and vigorously brought him down. Now, Clinton may have done the same thing as he was leaving office (funds for his library were partly paid by the wife of one of his pardonees)
but a standing Gov. can't do it for cash. When the case against him was got so strong,he lost his job and was prosecuted. When I was old enough to vote,I went in the military and have been a Republican ever since.I've also followed Fred's career ever since and if anyone thinks he's "just an actor" then they don't know Fred very well. He is and always has been a straight shooter for his country.

Run, Fred, Run

Fred of The Future
Also from the Fox News Sunday Interview (3/11/07)

Thompson: We've got an entitlement program that's bankrupting us. We've got things going on in Thailand, in Indonesia, in places that nobody ever talks about anymore that could impact on us.

We've got Chinese government who we're mutually economically dependent upon right now. But you know, they're still a totalitarian government that is building up their military tremendously and has 200 missiles pointed toward Taiwan.

Those are all things that are going to have to be dealt with. And the American people, we've learned, are going to have to be brought along with the process and with what's going on - be honest with them and inspire them to do the right thing.

Thompson on Iraq

jerabaub, i submit that the question on Iraq and the way you framed the Mr Tompson's position is a little more detailed than you would lead one to believe... the question from Chris Wallace on the Fox News Sunday interview of 3/11/07 was

WALLACE: What would YOU DO NOW in Iraq?

Fred's answer is as follows;

THOMPSON: I would do essentially what the president's doing. I know it's not popular right now, but I think we have to look down the road and consider the consequences of where we are.

We're the leader of the free world whether we like it or not. People are looking to us to test our resolve and see what we're willing to do in resolving the situation that we have there. People think that if we hadn't gone down there, things would have been lovely.

If Saddam Hussein was still around today with his sons looking at Iran developing a nuclear capability, he undoubtedly would have reconstituted his nuclear capability. Things would be worse than what they are today.

We've got to rectify the mistakes that we've made. We went in there too light, wrong rules of engagement, wrong strategy, placed too much emphasis on just holding things in place while we built up the Iraqi army, took longer than we figured.

Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify things. I think we're doing that now. We're coming in with good people. We're coming in with a lot of different people. I know General Petraeus from when he was in Tennessee at Fort Campbell. He believes in the plan. He's convinced me that they can do the job.

Why would we not take any chance, even though there's certainly no guarantees, to not be run out of that place? I mean, we've got to take that opportunity and give it a chance to work.

Good News
I find this to be good news that Fred Thompson's wife is encouraging him to run. Either he or Newt could easily have my vote. Rudi will have to really work hard but I will listen to him as well. McCain has no hope with me. He might as well save the postage and stop mailing me those fund raising letters.

Oh, Killer, enjoy your Kool-Aid.

BrianR
Rush has a great parody of "Girly Man" Edwards singing "I am Woman".

Baseballdoc: I think Thompson's fit to survive until 2017. Can't prove it, though, but IMO he's a lot fitter than McCain who has cancer.

Fred Thompson or Newt Gingrich are the only two viable Republicans in this race. America cannot afford to put a RINO or a puking socialist like Hillary in the White House.

Thompson
Everything I read about Thompson says he is a real conservative. I am ready to switch from Newt to Fred and cheer that we finally have someone with my values and someone who can be elected.
All you folks who are tired of these wimps we have elected and the wimps who are running now--Let's get together behind a good Republican!!

"W" opts out
Just a note about "W" opting out:
Doro Bush was at CPAC, where I had a chance to talk about her new book. She noticed my "I LIKE CONDI" button, made favorable comments and smiled as I gave her a button.
When I asked if she would be sure to show it to her brother, you know, the president, she laughed and said he would get a big KICK out of it. Then, I believe she said that he enjoys hearing this stuff about her.
Or was it wishful listening?
None the less, our group, http://www.thinkcondi.net, has sincere private citizens who are organizing across the nation to show strong support for Secretary Rice to run in 2008.
We have all heard the buzz if Cheney has to step down, and that Larry Sabato considers VP Condi Rice as a major shake-up for the GOP in 2008.

Fristy loves Thompson , too.
Fristy, strongly endorsed Thompson last week stating: "He's a fine man, and real good at watching balloons float about a room."

Fred's not JUST an actor
Sorry, Fred Thompson was a real person with a real job (attorney) for many years before he became an actor. In fact, the story is that he became an actor when the producers of a movie about Fred's real life couldn't find anyone else to effectively play the part.

He's cool as an actor, he was super-cool as a Senator, and if he became President, I'd finally look forward to listening to any presidential speech.

Bush and the Republicans have done little to "sell" this war to Americans, but the Dems are mistaken if they think Americans are eager to lose it. I think Fred might just be able to verbalize the need to succeed in Iraq--and even elsewhere.

baseball_notsy re: Edwards
Sorry, friend, if Edwards wants sympathy then he should pull out of the race. Otherwise, just like everyone else trying to become Prez, he's fair game and deserves absolutely no special consideration at all.

Besides, Breck Girlie Man Edwards is such an absurd piece of fluff that he simply BEGS for being made fun of.

And to think the Dems used to ridicule Quayle.

Yikes!

JFK did not really choose LBJ. He was pretty mucy thrust upon him as the only way to carry Texas. Or maybe it was the only way to carry the South. I don't remember which but LBJ's Veep slot was purely political.

Need new approach
I don't know much about Fred Thompson. Given the current crop of GOP candidates for president, the conservatives are not exactly smitten with excitement.

I have read where Thompson endorses the Bush policy on Iraq. If so, that will be a huge handicap for him in the general election.

You can splash perfume on a pig, adorn the beast with ribbons and a bonnet, but at the end of the day all you have is a pig.

Such is the Bush policy on Iraq.

A candidate can exude "gravitas" for the camera, his baritone voice can resonate throughout the halls of congress, but if what he is selling at the end of the day is simply a rehash of a failed policy in the mideast, I am not buying, and nor will a majority of American voters.

Need new thinking.
I don't know that much about Fred Thompson.

But I have read where he endorses the Bush policy on Iraq. If so, he will be severely handicapped in the general election.

You can dress up a pig, place ribbons and bonnets on it, even splash the beast with perfume, but at the end of the day, it is still a pig.

Such is the Bush policy on Iraq.

Unless a republican is capable of independent thinking, and approaches Iraq and the mideast with a sober assessment of reality, I don't think he can win the presidency in '08.

Fred Thompson may have a gravelly voice, but that is not a sufficient reason to lead our nation in these perilous times.

A new, baritone voice enunciating the same tired policy on Iraq is not going to get much traction.

"W" bowing out?
I think he thought his time better spent in contact with a world leader than journalist. He might learn something or impart an insight that might help solve a problem while entertaining Brazil's President Lula da Silva.

At the press dinner he will not do neither as their minds are closed and he has heard their versions of the world affairs many times before.

How's Thompson's Health?

.....I agree that Thompson looks very attractive and might just be what the Republicans need to stem the wave of Socialism that threatens our Nation ...but he is 64 and would be 66 when he took office and 74 if he served two terms ...so I would like to be reassured that he would select a bona-fide conservative as VP in case he cannot serve out a full term ...

.....I am sure that JFK did not consider this possibility when he selected LBJ ...the two men detested each other .....COLOSSUS

he is the real deal. he makes decisions based on what he believes in.

Black and White Brian
After reading your post, I might suggest that your deriding President Bush for "the while interrupting himself by the interjection of one incoherent sentence into every other" might seem to be a case of one in a glass house throwing stones. Or a pot calling a kettle black.

I cringe when Bush makes his numerous grammatical and pronunciation errors, not to mention the twisted sentences, but I will resist ridiculing him for speaking errors until I'm a little closer to perfect myself.

As for Fred Thompson, I was deeply saddened when he decided not to run for his Senate seat again and I would happily vote for him for President. His political positions are good and his demeanor is GREAT.

Media support for Fred Thompson
Is this the 3rd, or is it the 4th article in the last 2 weeks about Fred Thompson? He sure is getting a lot of support from the media, isn't he.

Go,Fred,Fred, go!
I have encouraged Fred Thompson to run for a couple of reasons. One the intense scrutiny he'll recieve, revealing any concerns.ie William Rushers' article said"He didn't have a flyspeck on his record".2ndly Fred does seem to be a real conservative!I've been digesting every bit of info I can find about him.So far so good!

Go Fred.....
As far as I'm concerned, Fred Thompson is the only real possiblity out there to defeat Obama or Clinton for the Presidency. The rest of our so-called candidates are buffoons.....

By the way...I wouldn't vote for John Edwards...but dang people, at least have some compassion for the man and wife that are going through such a life changing ordeal as cancer. Politics aside, these are Americans you know. (Even though they are Democrats.)

Grow up and sit at the big table of life instead of rummaging around on the floor with the rabble. Take the high road. You'll sleep better at night.

We will all reap Mr Bush's whirlwind
Not showing up for the press is but a glimmer of the real problem.

Not showing up for the presidency, including in defense of our sovereign borders and in so many other actually important ways and/or not picking up the commander-in-chief's baton and showing up for Iraq's and Syria's and Iran's bloody terrorists is of greater concern.

Instead, in demonstrating the definitive style of the second-class man he has long appeared and has turned out to be -- the while interrupting himself by the interjection of one incoherent sentence into every other -- by having both championed and surrounded himself with Gonzales/Miers-styled mediocrity, Mr Bush, (whose prior "management" track record includes his having fired Sammy Sosa from the Rangers and, despite John Sununu's own fallibilities and limitations, having fired the effective backbone of his also-woossy father's pathetic "administration" from it) has sewed the winds of failure.

The kind of failure whose consequences will likely include Mankind being plunged into a new islamafascistic-hesperophobia-driven Dark Ages from which our species is unlikely to ever again emerge into (Judeo-Christian/Western/Human Civilization's) Light.

Jindal Rocks
God keep Bro. Jindal from making stupid mistakes! (Think Trent Lott, George Allen, Tom Delay, etc.) Nobody's perfect...

Cheney as Understudy
Bush isn't going to show up before possibly hostile press people and they are sending Cheney in his place?

If the consequences weren't so tragic, we could all be enjoying the best comic theater of our age.
