Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- House Minority Leader John Boehner, who had promised last May that "bad behavior" by House Republicans who voted against their leadership would not be rewarded, announced to a party conference Wednesday that reform Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona was being removed from the Judiciary Committee.

With the change in House control, several Republicans had to be removed from committees. However, Flake was about halfway up the Judiciary panel in seniority, and this was his priority appointment. The decision was made by the Republican Steering Committee, dominated by Appropriations members who resent Flake's vigorous campaign against earmarks.

Boehner later told Flake he was purged because of his verbal attacks on party leaders. Flake was undone by his critical remarks on CBS's "60 Minutes" just before the election.

DEMOCRATIC DISCIPLINE

The House vote Tuesday passing a Democratic-sponsored homeland security bill showed that Republicans are unaccustomed to being in the minority for the first time in 12 years, while the Democrats are exercising iron discipline in the majority.

Although the full Republican leadership attacked the bill as expensive and ineffective, 68 Republicans voted for it while 128 were in opposition. The supporters included such ranking Republican committee members as Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida (Foreign Affairs) and Peter King of New York (Homeland Security).

All 231 Democrats voting were in support of the bill, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi began the Democratic "first 100 hours" of rapid-fire legislation. Pharmaceutical industry lobbyists could not find a single Democratic member against a party plan to force down drug prices. One moderate freshman congressman said he was opposed to the measure but felt obliged to vote for a bill that was in the Pelosi 100 hours as a "leadership issue."

EXPLORER OBAMA

Sen. Barack Obama informed a major Democratic financial contributor that he probably will announce formation of a 2008 presidential exploration committee this coming week, which starts with Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday.

A political source close to Obama told this column he was not sure the exploratory committee would be named that early but added that probably would happen during the next three weeks. Actual announcement of his candidacy would come later.

A footnote: Obama canceled tentative plans to deliver the keynote address for Martin Luther King Jr. Day ceremonies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. University officials speculated that Obama's travel has been temporarily suspended as he approaches the start of his presidential candidacy.

ROMNEY VS. REAGAN

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's 1994 effort to unseat Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in Massachusetts continues to haunt him. A Democratic blogger named SoThisIsWashington posted a video clip on YouTube of a debate with Kennedy in which Romney deliberately separates himself from Ronald Reagan.

The video, from their campaign debate, shows Kennedy telling Romney that "your economic program" is "the program of Mr. Reagan and Mr. Bush." Romney responded: "Look, I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush."

In the same debate, Romney promised to "sustain and support" the Roe v. Wade abortion decision. Romney also was damaged with conservatives by a 1994 letter in which he claimed he was more pro-gay rights than Kennedy.

"DR. MULTIMILLIONAIRE"

Newly elected Rep. Steven Kagen, a rich allergist who self-financed his campaign in Wisconsin, by his own account taunted President and Mrs. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and presidential adviser Karl Rove during a White House function for new members of Congress in December.

Kagen told a group of activists that after he found himself in the restroom with Rove, he blocked the White House deputy chief of staff's departure by holding the door closed. According to Kagen, he then said: "You're in the White House and you think you're safe. . . . My name's Dr. Multimillionaire and I kicked your ass."

The new congressman said he said separately to both Bush and Cheney: "Thank you for coming to Green Bay. I couldn't have won without you coming." Kagen also said he approached Laura Bush and purposely called her Barbara, the name of the president's mother. Kagen's remarks were reported in "The Scene," published in Appleton, Wis.

Sounds as though our government is under siege!

re: Democratic Discipline
Lydia,

The sons of darkness are always wiser in their own generation than the sons of light.

So Boehner, the minority
leader is punishing his mavericks like Jeff Flake. If the R's don't take new direction, they will lose again in 08. Looks like Boehner is business as usual. We can only hope that pols like him get voted out in the primary when their turn comes up, and their replacement is a real conservative. It will take several elections to even have a chance at getting a significant number of conservatives into DC.

The way things are
“How does it become a man to behave toward this American government today? I answered that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it.” ~Henry David Thoreau, “Civil Disobedience,” 1849

Just as true today as it was in 1849.

Mixed Feelings
On Jeff Flake, my feelings are mixed.

We can get all up in arms about his committee removal as being "business as usual". But the fact remains that party discipline by the Democrats is one of the reasons why they are "effective". A lack of GOP discipline provides fodder for the Dems & MSM (sorry for the redundancy) and it showed at the polls in November.

As to him being part of a Cuban delegation attempting to ease sanctions, as a cigar smoker... I'm all in favor of that!! :-)

Dr. You're Not The Boss Of Me
So Dr. Multimililionaire is going around Mommy's cocktail party yelling "You're Not The Boss of Me" and "Nanny Nanny Boo Boo" at the guests? Well, that reflects nicely on his upbringing, doesn't it? His Mama must be so proud that everyone is saying "What kind of home was that little rat b***ard brought up in?"

This is the Ponytail Hippie who can't get out of the Sixties, whose fondest memory is still the day he urinated in the wastebasket of the President of his university. He has clearly gone through life peeing on other people ever since and he's proud to say so.

The only thing that is good about putting these people out in public is that finally the adults will get a stomach full and rise up and bring back the rule of adults as they did when Mr. Reagan came into power. I hope that this time someone will run on the platform "The Sixties Are Over" and make it stick.

my 2 cents
We should have lifted the embargo long ago. It's kept Castro in power ever since we imposed it - all he has to do is point at it and say something about the evil Yankees in el nordo being responsible for your misery and that's all.

Romney is a joke. Both the Globe and the Herald have been cutting him to shreds for months, maybe even years. He strikes me as no better than a hack and we CAN DO BETTER - A LOT BETTER.

Rep. Kagen from Wisconsin - I wonder if his kids are proud of him.

DR. MILLIONAIRE???????????????
Somebody needs to tell him that most people are allergic to uncouth jerks.

Dr. A - Hole
rude and uncouth leads the league

Dr. multimillionaire
I have worked in hospitals at an administrative level for about 40 years. Without a doubt, most physicians are complete egocentrics and behavior similar to Dr. Multimillionaire is quite normal for physicians. While highly trained, most are not well educated. Similar to priests whose sexual maturation frequently halts somewhere in the early adolescent phase, so does the typical physician's emotional development cease at about the same point. It is a pitiful situation. Both cases.

Bad Behavior
I hate to see when stuff like this happens. Our side is supposed to be the grownup side and they act like a bunch of spoiled kids.

Will someont please get their attention before the next primaries! Better yet, get a qualified candidate to run against him and vote the idiot out of office.

Why Flake was dumped-opposition to pork
Mr. Novak mentioned Cuba and alluded to comments by Flake before the election, but he omitted the real reason why Flake was dumped--his oppostion to earmarks and pork.

Jeff Flake stomped on the wrong toes....
Jeff Flake did nothing more than threaten the "good ole boys" and their business as usual attitude towards earmarks. By trying to save the American Taxpayer hundreds of millions of dollars in waste he gets himself ousted from the Committee? I'm pretty sure we won't get any realistic explanation from those responsible for that removal. They should, however be held accountable. Like that'll happen.........

Who won in November again?
The Republicans lost in November because they were defeated by the conservatives. Many GOP conservatives chose not to vote but eh Reagan Democrats went back to vote for the new Blue Dogs in their own party. The GOP should be consolidating the conservative vote under their tent rather than trash them further. The Dems under LolaPelosi obviously don't get it either. I suspect Flake's predicament reflects the establishment's fear of conservatives. That's is why conservatives, Republican and Democrat should re-register as unaffiliated independents. We probably represent more than half of all voters.

Party discipline
Of course the Republicans can't all read off the same sheet of music. They aren't part of a massive ideological movement like the Democrats' socialism.

"B. Hussein Obama"! By the time November '08 rolls around, we'll be really sick of this guy. That's why he won't be anything more than Hillary's running mate.

Steve Kagan, rich guy, now a rep in congress. Sure, he's a doctor, but does he feel your pain? With the adolescent attitude he exhibits, I'll bet his bedside manner REALLY sucks.

More on Kagen (sadly) My Congressman!!!!
For the full context on Kagen's remarks, go to today's Drudge Report. But here's some more good 'local poop' on the obnoxious freshman congressman.

Today's Green Bay Press Gazette. Go to greenbaypressgazette.com..reports that Kagen allegedly violated the FDA rules by manufacturing, selling, and injecting patients with homemade vaccines. It goes on to report that he engaged (allegedly) engaged in shipping the 'homebrew' interstate too!!

Kagen ran against John Gard who was our current Wisconsin State Assembly speaker a Republican. I ran for my local State Assembly seat.

I campaigned this year and was in a dozen local parades with doctor multimillionaire. (So I've got to state that everything I say here is alleged, as his stepmother is Northeastern Wisconsin's most prominent attorney). Google Mary Lou Robinson.

Listen to this double standard. Candidate Kagen was a half hour late to an appearance before the Oneida Nation (Indian tribe). When he arrived he tried to dismiss his lateness by stating, "I'm running on 'INJUN' time!" The tribe and liberal press totally dismissed his blatant racial slur. Such a slur would have ended a conservatives political career.

Kagen constantly (and out of earshot to others) made obnoxious comments to me, which I dismissed because the comments were absolutely stupid and nonsensical. This guy is going to (if not already) become the JOKE OF WASHINGTON.

No recall yet?
Kagen's remarks were reported in "The Scene," published in Appleton, Wis.

What's wrong with the voters in Wis?

DavidMac how Right you are!!!
John Gard, who ran against multimillionaire doctor klinker. One of his ads challenged the "no patient left behind" claims. He uncovered that the doc DIDNOT accept medicare patients!

On Charley Sykes (go to wtmjradio.com.) talk show Thursday, patients called in giving accounts of their personal experiences. The bad doc, they said, sought out every opportunity to embarrass, belittle, and humiliate them. This is consistent with the current published reports.

Barney fife, icebox Jefferson, theirs a new clown in town!

"Rand"y..Too Soon...
Gannette newspapers, abc/nbc/cbs, is what most limit themselves to.

The majority here are blue collar, union paper workers, all good people but under or misinformed. In the outlying areas its farmers, controlled by their dependence on $ubsidie$.

In this state, incumbents are 97% re-elected, and he who spends the most money wins.

Take up a big enough collection and I'll run.

Thank you, Rep. Kagen
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Rep. Steven Kagen for proving beyond any doubt that it's not just attorneys who can be disgustingly obnoxious--and PROUD OF IT.

Is it not a crime to forcibly hold someone, as Dr. $$ held Mr. Rove? Surely there's a zealous prosecutor around to press this case. If it's good enough for the Duke lacrosse team, it's good enough for Dr. $$, especially since he has publicly admitted the crime.

A party of unity
I've heard over and over how the Republicans should behave more like Democrats and unite under one group of core beliefs in order to be viewed favorably by the media.

This is ridiculous, Republicans have been trying to walk a tightrope and please everyone for at least the past four years and it really looks like it's worked as planned. One of the most blatant examples is that of Chafee in Rhode Island. The Republicans merely looked over the fact that he had voted with the democrats in nearly every Senate vote in his career and gave him 100 percent support. He showed his thanks by first losing the election and then blocking John Bolton's nomination to U.N.

The only way the Republicans can gain back support is if they find some candidates who are leaders and who are strong in their core beliefs. Then voters such as myself will have a reason to go out and campaign for them. As of now, the Republicans don't have many good leaders, consequently they have a declining number of followers.

What did you expect?
Hello, these are democrats we are talking about. The president told America during the campaign, this is the kind of behavior to expect from these people. The votes have been cast, and the commiecrats are going to make everyone in country and the world pay for it.

Great News.
This guy is trying his best to follow in the shoes of the chief divider and his mentor John McCain. He is very involved in keeping our southern border wide open and the flow of cheap labor flowing into this counrty. He's an arrogant punk Globalist. What is wrong w/the AZ voters anyway? And there's poor J.D. Hayworth out of a job. AZ voters are totally confused and backwards. Good for the Congressional leadership. Mitch McConnell - its your turn to take put McCain in his place. DD

Why Lydia, you phonetically 'cursed'....
Lydia, you're my favorite TH 'church lady', and I'm shocked that you found a way around the sensors. Shame on you, and they will do it every time. Phunny pun..indeed.

Flake
Its good to see Flake being removed from the Judiciary committee.

It will be even better when the people remove the scumbag from Congress.

Kagen without a license
Go to Michelle Malkin's website to the story of Steven Kagen D.-Wis. Click on the Dan Riehl highlight and read how Kagen's "medical practice has been violating the law by operating without a license" and is allegedly in violation of federal law for manufacturing and selling allergy shots wihtout a valid license".

Flake
Jeff Flake has said he thought his removal from the Judiciary Committee was due to his support of amnesty for illegal aliens. Good for Boehner. The Chamber of Commerce types who want to keep importing workers for the jobs that can't be exported will be the end of the Republican Party. I will never again vote for anyone who will not uphold the laws they have passed. Amnesty in 1986 has resulted in 10 times the number of illegal aliens today. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. One more amnesty and there won't be a need for another, it won't be our country anymore.

Romney
If Romney is a fake, or an oportunist, or a flip flopper, then so to was Reagan. Reagan's govenorship saw liberal abortion legislations pass into California Law. Reagan's administration saw higher spending, as a percentage of the economic size, than we have under Bush at present.

If you can do better than Romney now then you could have done better than Reagan then.

If it's marriage you want to defend why elect a divocee? If it's fiscal restraint why the record spending?

If Reagan is the quintessential conservative then Romney at least matches him, and he's the only viable conservative candidate in sight.

Book of Mormon, not part of Bible.......
And those who try to make it so, are warned not to. Lydia..What relationship does GOOD have with EVIL. You cannot COMBINE them, they are oil & water, and we're not making good seasons* salad dressing..

So, you're cuter than the 'church lady'. I don't care about the cute factor (much). Give me a little talent.

First 100 Hours
Let's see what's happened in the first 100 hours...

* The minimum wage is raised. Except of course, for a business in San Francisco where Nancy Pelosi, our illustrious new Speaker, told them (her consituents) that they didn't have to "conform" to the new minimum wage laws.

* A bill is introduced to stop "grass roots groups" and label them as "lobbyists". Labor unions and such can spend their member's money any way they see fit, regardless of how they feel politically. They don't have to register as lobbyists. But if a group starts in AnyTown, USA that wants to go after abortion or same-sex marriage....they have to register as lobbyists. Can we stomp on the First Amendment any more diabolically than that? Talk about limiting free speech! What a bunch of hypocrites!

* Barbara Boxer attacks Condoleeza Rice PERSONALLY because she doesn't have cildren and can't understand or truly know what it means to sacrifice one's family. Rice chose a political career. She chose not to marry or have children. By all appearances, you'd think the feminists in this country would embrace this woman as a role model. She did this on her own! But NO! She's condemns as not having a clue! Another double standard by the feminists!

These first 100 hours have been a real eye opener. God help us!

"How Sweet It Is!"
Sweet, watching repubs and shrubbies being force fed their sour grapes and crow. Judging by the above posts, the 'misery index' is already high and shows signs of skyrocketing. Enjoy, I know I will.

Congressman Jeff Flake
I have heard many good things about Jeff Flake but did not see his votes on many issues take on anything close to fiscal conservative desires. He is a social conservative and his wanting those prohibition against women, gays and other restrictions, may not serve his constituents well.

I'm a Goldwater Conservative and do not my federal government involved in my social personal decisions. This movement by the Social Conservatives will destroy the entire Republican party and push Democrats into power that I doubt would be of any use to our futures.

I'm tired of fight for individual freedoms only to have them thrown back at me as silly liberal actions. Freedoms are what make America the greatest land on earth and the relgious right would be advised to stay away and leave our Constitution alone.

Flake is no loss to me on the Judiciary Committee as I want someone who represents individual freedoms.

Humiliation of Kark Rove
The only reason Rove didn't wet himself is that he was on the way out rather than on the way in. It's just this simple the remote-control bullies in the GOP can's take it when it's up close and personal. rove should be thanking his lucky stars that he didn't get a whirlie. Oh well, there's still time. Republicans: your payback is just beginning.

This is Novak "reporting"
I met Robert Novak at a University of Illinois breakfast a decade ago, and after listening to his rant for half an hour I concluded that everything he says is intended to persuade, not to inform. In other words, he is a salesman (and a pretty good stand up comic) but definitely not an honest or courageous broker of factual material. I encourage you to base your discussions about who might have said what on reports from honest brokers. Otherwise you are just rolling in the snake oil.
