Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner's decision to withdraw from consideration for the 2008 presidential nomination has produced speculation at high levels of the Democratic Party that former Vice President Al Gore may run again.

Warner was to challenge front-running Sen. Hillary Clinton from the right, while Gore is on her left. Nevertheless, Gore succeeds Warner as the most likely "non-Hillary" to battle her for the nomination.

A footnote: Warner's withdrawal, after nearly two years of pursuing national support, puzzles Democrats. Only a month ago, he was asking prominent members of the party to back him. Even after getting out, he still told friends he believes he could have won the nomination.

RESCUING REYNOLDS

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has intervened with an independent expenditure trying to save Rep. Tom Reynolds, the national House Republican campaign chairman, from defeat in his upstate New York district resulting from the Mark Foley scandal.

The RNC is running an ad, which cannot be coordinated with Reynolds's campaign under federal law, on Buffalo and Rochester television stations. It attacks industrialist Jack Davis, the self-financed Democratic candidate, on his protectionist policies. "Jack Davis wants tariffs on many of the products you buy," says the ad. "It would be like adding a tax on them. Higher prices may not matter to millionaire Jack Davis, but everyone else would feel the pain."

Independent polls showed Reynolds down by double digits in a supposedly safe Republican district after it was revealed he had urged Foley to run for re-election. That gap has been lowered, and Reynolds is not now listed in private Democratic calculations as a sure loser Nov. 7.

NANCY'S RESTRAINT

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is not expected to actively support her longtime ally, Rep. John Murtha, in his bid to become majority leader if Democrats win control of the House.

Pelosi's non-support would guarantee election of her rival, Rep. Steny Hoyer, as the House's No. 2 Democrat while she becomes speaker without opposition. Murtha had strongly supported Pelosi in her 2001 victory over Hoyer to enter the party leadership.

Murtha, a hero to Iraq War dissenters, lacks support to defeat Hoyer without Pelosi's backing. Hoyer commands the widest popularity among House Democrats to be elected speaker but cannot cope with solid support given Pelosi by the huge delegation from her home state of California.

RIGHT GAINS

The House will be less Republican and perhaps Democratic-controlled because of the Nov. 7 elections, but it may be more conservative. The Republican Study Committee (RSC), the conservative caucus, will gain a higher percentage of House Republicans.

Three RSC members are leaving the House to run for higher office, while eight more are seriously threatened for re-election (though some may survive). Against that, seven new Republican candidates who are heavily favored to win and five others with a good chance are conservatives who probably will join the RSC. In addition, several non-RSC moderate Republicans may lose, possibly including all three GOP members from Connecticut.

A footnote: Businessman David McSweeney, the only Republican given a chance to unseat an incumbent Democrat, is expected to join the RSC if he defeats freshman Democratic Rep. Melissa Bean in their suburban Chicago district.

MRS. JUSTICE'S CHOICE

Martha-Ann Alito, wife of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, was listed on top of the host committee for an Oct. 11 fund-raiser in East Brunswick, N.J., helping State Sen. Tom Kean Jr., the Republican Senate candidate in New Jersey.

It is unusual for a Supreme Court justice's spouse to get involved in partisan politics, and pro-life activists were astounded that Alito's wife would back a pro-choice candidate. The Kean event was run by "It's My Party Too," the political action committee that raises money for pro-choice Republicans.

Kean's incumbent Democratic opponent, Sen. Robert Menendez, voted against Alito's confirmation to the high court. Kean has announced he would have voted for Alito.

Unfamiliar with Novak's work
Does he alway put news briefs into the opinion section?

YOU DON'T KNOW NOVAK?
Check out his bio Frey. Robert Novak is one of the most respected journalists in the business and has been around a long time.

And yes, sometimes he runs little news goodies like this in his column. After all, it is HIS column.

I would like to hear Robert's take on the race between Jeff Bingaman and Allen McCullough in my home state, New Mexico. While Bingaman is probably a shoo-in, challenger McCullough is coming up fast, something that has never happened before. Bingaman is the Robert Byrd of our state and has never been seriously challenged.

It is getting interesting though! Go Allen!

mmmmm
Oh well it's early Saturday morning.

The quote of the year
Everybody is and has been writing about Hill & Billy trying to get back into the whitehuse, along with the chances of whoever is also running. The thing is she hasn't officially announced that she will be running although she has raised unbelievable amounts of money.

There is an article on Drudge this morning where she states that :...she has thought about running for the presidency in 2008, but said she is committed to running for Senate re-election".

If she doesn't run (and the sun comes up in the west tomorrow) can the supporters sue her for fraud for her fundraising?

Parallels between Gore and Nixon
This may seem a little weird, but it's not far fetched to actually draw some comparisons between AL Gore and Richard Nixon. Both men lost very close presidential races mired with controversey. Yet, Nixon came back in 1968 to win the Presidency. Who's to say the same won't happen to Al Gore in 2008? There won't be a sitting president with coattails to run against and since everyone is so freaked out over Hillary running for President, Gore looks more and more like a very attractive alternate.

Hey it could happen, although the crystal ball is a little murky right now.

Gore
If Gore is to run for president in 2208 he had better start losing weight in 2006. The man is a blob. Gore, the environmentalist, has a mining operation on his property in Tennessee, he is the number one polluter in that county. The reason this is not brought out? His family controls everything that goes on in that particular county. This is but one of many reasons he did not win Tennessee in his run for the presidency.

You tricked me Bob
Good article that needed writing BUT I was hoping for something that would draw Al Gores attention so I could make a special request.
I read a factoid that claims the sun will burn out in only 30 Billion years. I wanted to ask Al Gore what sacrifices we Earthlings should make to ward off that awful thing.

This column
Kraut your question about a certain New York senator and her fund raising efforts is a subject that is already happening. Not too long ago one of the national associations for attorneys has had an ongoing case against her for just this reason. Her attorneys have been fighting tooth and nail to keep it out of the courtrooms.
This action was taken because she raised over 700K in illegal, or supposed illegal campaign contributions on her first sentatorial campaign. It would not be something new to her and her money raising efforts.
We will have to watch this because if she gets elected woe to the people of this country. You will see an change and an assualt on personal and constitutional rights that may change this country forever. She wants "POWER" pure unrestricted power. She will be many times worst than "Slick Willie" because has learned from his mistakes and she won't make the same ones.

Alas...
Would it be too much to hope for that Al would get the nod from the democratic party? I really believe you could then put up a bag of spinach to run against him and win the election going away. I can already hear the debates:

Moderator: Mr. Gore, what is your idea on solving America's "energy crisis?"

Gore: It's all about global warming, stupid! War crimes tribunals to those who deny this!!!

Moderator: Your turn Mr. e. coli.

Spinach: ............

Next day's headline: Poll results: In a survey conducted after the debate, results showed Al Gore far ahead of spinach among those likely to consider Michael Moore a god.

The rest of breathing, thinking America has the bag of spinach ahead by more than a 3 to 1 margin.

But stay tuned, a report out of the democratic camp indicates the party will leak allegations of the spinach unfairly enhancing a certain american sailor who then brutally beats up a man time and again, showing the spinach is nothing but a barbarian who is in favor of Gitmo and torture. CNN has obtained video of this barbaric act, but warns you it may not be suitable for children...

Yep, gotta love Al Gore and his wing of the party.

What could be more fun.....
.......than watching Gore and Hillary rip each other a new one in the primary? Imagine the incredible quotes the GOP could then use in the general election:

Gore: "Hillary, you're a fat socialist nut-job."
Clinton: "Al, you're a fat environmentalist nut-job."

And so on.

If Al's goning to run, won't he have to pull his incredibly fat head out of his incredibly fat butt?

Twodog: I agree
I think either Gore or the Hildebeast would pretty much assure a Republican victory, UNLESS the Reps put up some RINO like McCain or Giuliani.

titaniczilla
You missed one more similarity. Both Gore and Nixon were running for president after serving as VP for popular 2-term presidents when they lost.

And, as you suggest, both will be running without an incumbent opponent or an incumbent's hand-picked successor/VP as an opponent.

Having said all that, I have to say Gore is, if anything, less charismatic than Nixon and I don't think his chances are all that great unless the Republicans pick an even greater charisma-vacuum to run against him.

hill and gore
please say it isnt true ,if either of those libs get in power it will be time to look for another country to live in .

Andrews: Understatement of the decade
You wrote: "Gore is, if anything, less charismatic than Nixon"

LOL.

I have an old Pet Rock with more charisma.

If the Hildabeast and Al Bore got in power it would be time to move to a new Planet! They would destroy this one!

BrianR
I don't know about a Hill candidacy. Dick Morris, not the greenest apple on the tree, thinks she has an enormous "hidden" voter pool consisting of youngish single career women who still think they favor the feminist agenda. The fact that when that bio clock tick starts getting louder in the late 30's, they'll realize they been had, doesn't change the fact that she is their heroine now and could well get them to the polls for the first time. Hill would be a polarizer, and set records in total votes -- on both sides. I wouldn't, myself, count her out.

Pistol: LOL
I especially like the "hidden" nature of her constituency.

I agree, she's one of the most polarizing people on the political scene, and I think that's why she'd lose so dramatically. She's also energize the "hidden" constituencies of her opponent.

Then maybe we could just say goodbye to all of this Clinton nonsense. Talk about Clinton-fatigue!

Sheesh!

Those two people are exactly like AIDS or Herpes. They won't go away no matter what you do.

BrianR
you continue to crak me up! If either of those two were STD's it would be a one person epidemic!
Not even enough tequilla on the planet to make either one of them attractive to anyone!

Cat and NRA
Hahaha...

Ahhh....

Man, you guys are funny.

Cat: Yeah, you can drink yourself silly, in the morning wake up feeling like crapola, and THEY'RE STILL THERE!

NRA: In the case of the Hildebeast, wasn't that a $100,000 bill?

goshawk
where is the space ship , all the libs think there gonna take over, its all i hear where i live, unfortunatly i live in a liberal town and there all around me ,i cant stand it. its bush did this and bush did that ahhhhhhhh##

The spaceship...
...is in the process of being designed and tested. Check out Space.com for info about the X-Prize Cup just concluded today in Las Cruces, NM.

Meanwhile, for Jerry, here's a link to sign up for Novak's free weekly newsletter, which goes into much greater detail about the overall prospects and specific races at all levels. And good luck against Bingaman.

http://www.evansnovak.com/offers/offer.php?id=ENPR001.

I agree with Brian re Cat Trapper and NRA, and boy did I need a laugh tonight after slogging through almost 300 posts on McCollough's site (and posting a few myself).

I'm working to get Republicans elected this time because I can't stand the thought of the Dems winning anything. We Republicans aren't perfect, but if we folks in the street don't keep our elected officials' feet to the fire to make sure they remember how they got to Washington, then we have only ourselves to blame if they don't do what we want them to do (or give us valid reasons for not doing so).

I dread the thought of Billery getting elected--ever--because the first thing she'd do is declare the War on Terrorism won, the second thing she'd do is pull the funding for the military, and the third thing she'd do is kill NASA and private space development any way she can. Billy might've been a Bubba, but Hilly is a powermad non-normie who'd love nothing better than to find a way to have herself declared Queen. Allowing anyone to go into space, much less build cities there, beyond her reach and control, would be utter anathema to her.

Al Bore is, of course, even worse, but much less effective because he is a bore.

Still, back in about '02, I wrote a novel called The Second American Revolution, about an Al Bore act-alike and what he wanted to do to us--and what happened to him as a result. It's one of the five completed novels in The Starfield Valley Tales, available on my main website for free download.

Shameless plug, here. Click on my name here, go to Phoenix Lady's Nest on the blog roll, pick Phoenix Rising Presents, and then Starfield Valley Tales. As I said, the novels are free. The nice thing about being a novelist is all the truly nasty things you can do to people you detest--and get away with it because their names are changed to protect the guilty, and it's just a story, anyway.

Meanwhile, I'm watching our CD-5 race closely. I've made it my business to get to know Doug Lamborn, who will be one of those new members of the RSC mentioned by Mr. Novak, if he's elected, as he probably will be, given how conservative Colorado Springs is. He's getting beat up by his Dem opponent, a retired Lt. Col. who says he's the better man for helping the vets and active duty forces stationed here. Problem is, I wouldn't trust a Democrat as far as I could push him with my little finger, and I'm not very happy with the moderate Republicans here who claim they'd rather vote for anyone but Doug. At least Hugh Hewitt seems to have overcome his repugnance for Doug (he supported Jeff Crank, the annointed successor to Joel Hefley, and I had to take him to task about that on his blog), so maybe these others will, too, when they remember just what the Democrats will do if they get even an inch, let alone a mile.

But enough for tonight. I can't see straight anymore.

Ooops!

Hillary
I love when conservatives refer to Hillary as "Hitlary." Tell me, please, do you really think Hillary Clinton is the equivalent of Hitler? Be honest here. What makes this even funnier is that any time anyone even remotely connects Bush to Hitler, the right froths at the mouth for weeks on end. So tell me, how do you justify the Hitlery nickname? Anyone?

concord2123
Name calling quickly gets tiresome, doesn't it? Its common on these posts, and i did it myself at first, but it soon palled. My take is that its a much more common failing on the left, both in these posts and in the MSM. Lefties tend to go ballistic when someone refers to them as unpatriotic, socialist, or even liberal. The response is rarely in political terms. Racist, mean-spirited, corrupt seem to be amongst the more favored responses. Of course i'm a conservative, more and more proud of it, and so my perception could well be distorted.

This doesn't make sense
How can Algore run for president? I thought it moved back to France already.

Concord
We justify it because it's funny. Believe it or not, some of us laugh when we see the word, "Hitlary".

demorats
i watched a debate between hillary and her opponent spencer in new yaark ,they had an audience full of liberals cheering and clapping for hillary ,as i watched and listened to her she didnt miss a moment to blast bush and republicans from what i saw spencer should win in november plainly because he made more sense than hillary, she hardly makes it as a senator let alone wanting to be president, she seems to think its a secret that she is going to run for president,GOD HELP US if she does and wins its bad enough she is in the senate pushing liberalism as she does, lets hope she loses the senate seat. she plays all sides nowadays to make herself look like shes not the rabid liberal that she is,very cleaver but its not fooling most people that know how her and her husband really are.

Bore again?
Just what the country needs. Might be good though, hopefully he would lose AGAIN. Sorry Libbies, know you get your lace undies in a ruffle on the subject, but he DID LOSE in 2000.

Bad side is, we would all be subject to his pre-adolescent voice, soprano whinning. Boo hoo its not right, I should be the Pres. I wanna recount, sob sob I wanna recount. You don't do it, I'll sit here and hold my breath till I turn purple.

demorats
the demorats had control for forty years and they complain about the bush administration for not doing anything, how come they never even tried to get a perscription drug plan for the elderly,it may not be perfect but the gop at least started it but the dems whine about bush doing nothing where were they during there 40yr riegn on a whole lot of things they blame the gop for not doing now and how could the gop get things passed with the demorats costantly putting a wrench in the works to make them look like they could not get these important bills passed so to bring it up in election time that if we elect them it will be better.

concord
Maybe you could get angry if someone made a movie about a New york senator getting assassinated...

Name Calling for Hillary
You really don't have to call Hillary Clinton Hitlary or what ever. She and Adolf Hitler have one thing in common, the sheer lust for POWER! She's a Radical Liberal, one of those that Rush Limbaugh talked about. She's one of those who believe that we the common people of America don't have the intelligence or common sense to know what's good for us or how to run our lives. The Radical Liberals will do that for us.
There have already been senators and representatives (Democratic) who have confabed about how they can change the laws and get the Constitution changed to suit their programs, or should I say their progroms for the future of America.
These people have already tried many tricks such as, slipping little provisos and changes to major bills to be passed. They also are playing and counting on the apathy of the American voter.
What was it the news commentators stated the other day, less than half of the people who can vote do so. Scary!
The people in the European countries overrun by Hitler found that their freedoms were taken away bit by bit, will Hillary and her cronies take ours away like that? Making it seem in the process that they are doing us all a favor and that we'll be better off with out those freedoms?
I personally don't want to her to have that chance. She's raising lots of mnoey, were from? Probably those people who have always given the Liberals money, those on the coasts and the coast border states. But what about the heartland? We common people out here? Its something scary to think about Hillary as president! That's REALLY scares me!!!!!!!!!!!!
