Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

WASHINGTON -- Both the Senate Republican leadership's unofficial agenda for the last pre-election session of the 109th Congress beginning this week and a privately circulated White House wish list are extraordinarily heavy. That means the planned adjournment date of Sept. 29 surely cannot be met, and even Oct. 6 may be too early. Yet, immigration is not mentioned on either expansive list.

This is remarkable because Republican members of Congress who talked to constituents during the August recess found the mood of the party's base remains as sour as it has been all year: unhappiness over too much government spending and unchecked illegal immigration under a Republican Congress and administration.

Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, a moderate conservative who is a hard-liner on immigration, was quoted last week reflecting the consensus of his colleagues. Congress will do nothing about immigration until its lame-duck session after an election in which Republicans may well have lost congressional majorities. Isakson stated these reasons for inactivity: Congressional field hearings on immigration will not be concluded until mid-September, and intraparty GOP differences on the issue remain unsettled. The failure of Republican leadership on the issue of the year is palpable.

In the House at least, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert is trying to address immigration. He plans to bring together chairmen of the House field hearings later this week to see what can be done before the election. But House GOP sources say there is no chance of the party accepting a guest worker program that is integral to any compromise reform. The resolute House Judiciary Committee chairman, Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, during the recess labeled as a "staggering burden on American taxpayers" the Senate-passed bill (approved by President Bush) because it contains the guest worker program.

Immigration is the most melancholy element of a depressing Republican year. The Iraq intervention and its aftermath have hurt, and Republican inattention to runaway government spending has been deplorable. But immigration is the issue most likely to cause rank-and-file Republican voters to stay home on election day, and it may cost the party its congressional majorities.

When Republican Rep. Mike Pence went home to his east central Indiana district in August, he found constituents upset -- as they had been all year -- about spending and immigration. Chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, Pence has courageously taken the position that a border security bill should not omit a guest worker program (that does not include a path to citizenship).

Pence, a rising star in the conservative movement, has faced a torrent of right-wing abuse for advocating a guest worker program that is condemned as amnesty for illegal aliens. Rep. Tom Tancredo, leader of the congressional hard-liners on immigration, has viciously branded Pence as an apostate. But Pence told me last week that Hoosier voters, when he explains it to them, will accept his three-part formula on immigration: protect the border, no amnesty for illegals and access for foreign workers needed by the U.S. economy.

Although no more than 25 House Republicans follow Tancredo's rigid line, that is enough to obstruct a coherent Republican posture. But many more conservative lawmakers write off any guest worker program as just amnesty. In trouble on Iraq and federal spending, Republicans are being lured into a nativist posture that is political fool's gold.

George W. Bush, John McCain and Mike Pence dread a Republican descent into nativism. In my half century of political reporting, I never have seen a candidate or party succeed in playing the economic nationalist card. Even worse, a divided party promises to go into the hazardous 2006 election after doing nothing about an issue its constituents think is most important.

"You get it!" Bush earlier this year told Pence after he agreed with the president that permitting new immigration is compatible with protected borders. "I not only get it, I lived it," the congressman replied, telling him of his grandfather, Mike, who emigrated from Ireland in 1923 and became a Chicago bus driver. Pence told me last week from Indiana he will try to make something happen in the September session. It is an uphill climb, but the grim alternative is a divided Republican Party going into this election campaign with a blank slate on immigration.

Why Not Stay At Home?
Let's see....if I go to the polls and vote for a Republican who is soft on Immigration, I will wake up Wednesday knowing that either nothing will be done or 12 million lawbreaking illegal aliens have been handed citizenship.
Now...If I don't go to the polls and the Democrats get in I will wake up Wednesday knowing that either nothing will be done or 12 million lawbreaking illegal aliens have been handed citizenship.

Wow! What a choice.

On the other hand, I could...COULD..go to the polls and vote Against any candidate who has been soft on Immigration. Republican or Dem. Makes no difference. Don't care what the opponent (for whom I will vote) feels, hears or says.

NOTHING IS GOING TO BE DONE!
As stated in other posts, there ARE LAWS ON THE BOOKS DEALING WITH ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. The AG knows this. The President knows this. Every politician knows this. There are laws on the books dealing with employers of illegal aliens. This, too is known in all strata of the political arena.
They are once again thinking how effing DUMB the American voter is. While they have laws they could be utilizing to fight illegal aliens and employment of illegals, they tend to go 'Listen to the people' or some such trash. They are stalling until the November Elections and then it will be back to status quo. If they come up with nothing and we still vote them back in, we are as dumb as they think we are.
President Bush 'Gets it'. He knows what he is doing and that ain't what the people want. He is trying to do the old magician's trick of making you watch one hand while the other is the cultprit. He KNOWS if the jobsites were hit and hit hard the jobs would dry up and the illegals would go home of their own accord. He KNOW we would not have to physically deport 12 million illegals. He KNOWS there are already laws dealing with this issue. Why does he not tell his AG to enforce them? Perhaps it is time the Republican Party decided whether it most needs the contributions of the fat cats who hire the illegals or the votes of the Americans who put his sorry arse in office in the 1st place. And the 2nd place as well.

Immigration best be put on schedule
The house and senate better think about putting immigration on their agendas and it better be just enforcement only, none of the other crap they want to throw in. They need to listen to their constituents if they want to keep their jobs - enforce the laws we have in place and secure the borders - it does not matter what Bush or anyone wants, it is what the American people want that counts.

Is it too late?
It is too bad that we seem to have a clear understanding of what needs to be done now. Our choices, at the voting booth, are really stinky.

Why didn't we have the outrage, we have now, during the primary election? We could have dumped some deadbeat incumbents and sent fresh blood to DC.

With the general election just weeks away Republicans could stay home and let the Dems win. But what a childish and foolish thing to do. Almost as bad as having reelected the same tired, bought and paid for incumbents in the primary.

Americans better wake up and learn that the primary is when you decide who you party will run and the general election is when you decide which party will control America.

The base won't stay home.
Novak needent worry, the Republican base won't stay home because of illegal immigration. We're mad as hell! (Can you say he** without getting banned??) We're gonna vote, allright, but Republicans like Pence better not count on us voting for him! If Novak wants the Republicans to win, he'd better hope we stay home! Remember when Reagan said he didn't leave the Democrat party, the Democrats left him? That's exactly how I feel about the GOP!

War-monger Barnes - Another Neo-Con
Barnes is happy to discard conservative principles as long as it's in blind, mindless support of El Presidente Jorge Boosh! Fight undeclared wars? "No problemo!" Surrender the borders? "Si, Senor!" Borrow and spend the country into bankruptcy? "Where do I sign?" Hand over our ports to a country with known terrorist links? "Free Trade is our God!"

It's the blathering of neo-cons like Barnes and his fellow "Beltway Boy" that destroy Fox News's claim to be "fair and balanced."

Neocon Carries Water for Jorge Boosh
Novak might have some credibility if he could simply count. The Immigration Reform Caucus, which Tom Tancredo heads, has over ONE HUNDRED members, not "25" as implied. Tancredo is a power to be reckoned with, not an extremist to be ignored. El Presidente Jorge Boosh does so at his peril. So do the members of the US Senate. Our president and his AG have no intention of enforcing the law. What has the country come to?

Got that Phone Call too.
I listened to Newty plead and explain that the world was coming to an end if I didn't support the cause.

I then told the beggar that donating money was tantamount to rewarding the behavior I abhor. So no money from me. And no votes either.

I also explained that I'm a swing-voter. I'm the conservative not tied to the Republican party. You can't ignore me for two or six years and then think you can scare me into voting you back into office.

She say's, "what about the Supreme Court?" and I asker her what about Harriet Myers? What an insult.

I hoped they'ed be smart and put another Repub in during the primaries. Now, I'm stuck voting for a political hack Democrat. And I'm ticked at the Demos for not putting up someone decent either.

Crpa. I'll just tough out the Dems for an election cycle.

Republican Phone Calls for Money
I have to laugh at some of the above posts and the reactions since I pretty well told the caller my feelings also. Yet the Busy Ditch began SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF HER LUNGS AND ARGUING WITH ME!
What made it worse for her was that I broke out laughing.
Here's some partisan broad, begging for money, not only disagreeing with me, but actually FIGHTING with me.
What's that old saying: You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar . . .?

"But immigration is the issue most
likely to cause rank-and-file Republican voters to stay home on election day, and it may cost the party its congressional majorities."

So, knowing this, why won't they do the right thing here (please interpret "right" both ways)? It's one thing to go against your base in hopes of getting elected; it's another to go against your base knowing that it might sink you. If these guys are too dumb to realize this, they deserve to lose. We need to make sure we vote in the primaries to try and get conservatives the nomination. Otherwise, I'm afraid Brian's right. We'll have to go through the desert to get to the promised land.

By the way, check out "A Conservative Comeback" on Flagwaver's blog to discuss exactly this issue:

Mickey, Irish
Mickey: wouldn't that be a hoot? Money and votes are the only things they understand.

Irish: As I just wrote, I'm afraid your plan won't work. As long as they get back into office, you think they care one bit what you say to them afterward?

We may well have to lose one or both houses this year; if it's one, I hope it's the Senate, as they're a pretty useless bunch of bast&ards anyway. Maybe THAT will send a wakeup call to the Reps.

I'm a conservative first, and a Rep a far distant second. I'm not voting for any clown who's no different in principle from his Dem opponent.

I refused to vote for Lundgren when he ran for Cal Governor, too, and he lost. But so what? He was no better than his opponent.

We may have to go through a bad season to get to a good one. We had to get through Ford and Carter to get Reagan. But as I've written before, it's like seeing a cancer on your X-ray. The surgery's going to be painful, but the alternative is worse.

danger ahead
If we are all mad as hell as I am and either don't vote or don't vote republican we might get Hillary in 08 and demicommie control of house and senate. We should vote republican but call our local politicians and tell them not another dime will we donate unless they shape up and follow the true conservative mold...those of us who have worked calling, posting signs having coffee parties for the cause..should tell the republicans running in our districts to get immigraqtion under control, secure our borders with the National guard, and keep the country safe from terrorists, some of whom are democrats
already in office. WE need to defeat any of those guys who are up for election, loudly make out voices heard, and keep fighting in the trenchs. If the libs take over we will be attacked in about five minutes after they are sworn into office. Get to the polls enmasse!God bless freedom lovers and conservatives whereever they live!

RINOS
BrianR-wonder if she was the same one who called me? I told her exactly the same thing except for the name of my rep-maybe if everyone does this,it might start shaking things up. I want the President Bush that I voted for back.

unhappiness over too much government...
Reply to "...unhappiness over too much government spending and unchecked illegal immigration under a Republican Congress and administration. "

My view is that IF the Rs DO NOT spend enuf to stiffle voter's appetite for more social programs then the Dems will promise much and get the votes.

Conservatives: Take Control of Debt and Government Growth Issues.

http://rycksrationalizations.townhall.com/

If the Republicans do not settle both immigration and healthcare the liberals will and the result will be higher taxes and 4,000,000 new votes for the left.

That will defeat the conservatives.

Spend defensively, close the borders, push illegal to the back of the citizen lines and keep the debt so high that the liberals cannot raise taxes. Growth will pay off the debt.

Illegal Immigration
The Republican party is living in La La Land if they think they are winning the hearts and minds of Latinos. What they are doing is losing the rest of us. Poor uneducated people are the Dems base. The more Latinos = more Democrats. The only time a Republican has won lately here in California is when they take a hard line stance AGAINST illegal immigration. Pete Wilson was losing until he embraced Prop.187.Then he won in a landslide. Our curent goven-ator won because he promised to overturn the just passed law giving illegals a drivers license. The more Latino Ca. becomes the more Democrats get elected. They just recently rewrote a law that says if you are caught driving without a license in Ca., your car is impounded. Now under the new law, that only applies to US citizens. Anyone else {illegals} gets theirs back in 24 hours. The logic behind this?? We won't give them a license, because they are here illegally. Therefore we cannot take their car for 30 days. I feel as if I am Alice falling down the rabit hole.

Just coincidentally
On Saturday, I got a fund-raising call from the RNC (Over the years, I've contributed regularly).

It was one of those "please stay on the line, Newt Gingrich has a message for you" calls. Before she could start the recording, I stopped her and told her there was no way I was going to contribute to the RNC, and that I made my contribution ($100, actually) directly to my Representative, Buck McKeon, because he is a good conservative, and to the NRA.

I also told her that until the Reps shaped up on immigration and spending, and stopped putting forward candidates that were RINOs, Country Club Republicans, and Rockefeller Republicans, I wasn't going to contribute one thin dime more.

Needless to say, that kind of took the wind out of her sails.

Our hardworking crooks in Washington
Constitutionally, the White House would be downsized to a double-wide, Congress would be an annual work-week, and the Pentagon would be sold with the proceeds going to the military that is doing the real fighting instead of career jockeying. The military would be on our borders not building roads, but pointing AK-47s at drug runners and coyote hustlers.

Our jobs would be back in our own country, as would our taxes handed out as 'foreign' aid and everybody would work and have health care.

Won't work? How would we know if it has never been tried? Particularly if we also established a real Supreme Court with accountability requirements.

Tanabear
I have had two of my posts rejected because when I tried to submit them a sentence appeared on the screen. Once it informed me that the post was rejected because the word p*** was in the text.

The second time there was the same message but the word was c***. That happened after I had written a fairly lengthy comment to Flagwaver on his Blog. That is very frustrating, just as I am sure it is intended to be.

Neither of my posts contained those words. I know that the first word means prostitute. I don't know what the second word that began with c means. I vaguely remember hearing it before, but I don't remember what it means.

I don't speak Spanish. Whatever is going on, Spanish is a part of it. I notice that you mentioned the word w*****k, which also has a connection to the Spanish language. I didn't write out the word in this post because I am sick of writing something and having it rejected because of words that were not present.

Tanabear, the word you included in your post above used to be used to describe illegal aliens. I am aware that it had a pejorative connotation, but back then I never gave it a thought.

Illegal aliens were not on my radar at that time. Now it looks as though someone is imposing a Spanish brand of political correctness on Townhall.

Oh! When I got that rejection sentence the text of my post was highlighted. I am not aware of the complexities of hackers, but I know that they infest the internet. I sure hope something can be done to correct what is happening.

Thin Ice
What looks good is mostly smoke and mirrors the housing boom created. 42% of job growth was tied to that market. The U.S. economy is on thin ice and whether or not we make it across the lake depends on energy prices, inflation, world market competition and our own tax policies.

The tax cuts were all we could get but, they are the wrong ones. The ones we got when to China with purchases of more Chinese goods.

We need reform like Ireland who not only decreased national debt from 120% of GDP to 27% but increased the wages of workers in mfg. from 1/2 ours to $1.30 higher than ours. Their workers wages went up 325% to our 60% over the same time period.

However, they cut taxes on the wealthy, business income (37.5 pts down to 12.5% from that 50% ratem=m and capital gains from 60% to 20%. But what they didn't cut was the low end and workers paid 20% and start at a lower wage than here.

However, which is better, a lower personal income tax rate for a worker or rising wages, smaller national debt, more jobs, better paying jobs, and a higher standard of living.

The purchase of autos by workers had cause KYOTO to say Ireland (now the 2nd wealthiest nation in Europe) needs to pay fines to the poor nations of Europe because their success is warming the world. Keep in mind that all of man's contribution to greenhouse gas is less than 1/2 of one percent.

the drive behind immigration
quote:
If Americans ever succeeded in getting rid of illegal immigrants – deporting those who are already here and preventing the entry of others – there would be an outcry from Latino activists, civil libertarians and the business community.

But that's nothing. Do you know who might really be furious? The Social Security Administration. If not for the billions in payroll taxes that illegal immigrants are paying into the system, the funding crisis facing Social Security would be much more serious and much more imminent. It is all thanks to the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, which made it a crime for employers to knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

True, the law is a joke that is rarely enforced, and that should bother the law-and-order crowd more than it does. But by forcing employers to require Social Security cards – even bogus ones – IRCA did manage to rope illegal immigrants into the system. Last year, contributions by illegal immigrants made up about 10 percent of the Social Security surplus – the difference between what the system takes in and what it doles out.

===============================

Why aren't voters told this?

Border Security and Immigration Reform
There are currently 12 to 20 million people in the United States illegally. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the on-going global war on terror, national security demands that we know who is in this country and that we control the borders to prevent our adversaries from entering. In addition, the economic impact of having large numbers of illegal aliens puts a tremendous economic burden on social programs, hospitals, law enforcement, and schools, especially in the border-states.

The following is a ten-point plan to secure the border, identify the people that are currently in this country illegally, develop a plan to assimilate those that are here that meet certain minimum standards and deport those that do not meet the minimum standards.

The first step is to close the borders – today. The illegal immigration problem should not be allowed to get worse. We should use the National Guard initially to assist the border patrol until a barrier/electronic fence can be installed. Such a fence would detect, monitor, and characterize persons and vehicles crossing the border illegally. The fence would allow for effective deployment of border patrol agents to interdict illegal border crossings. The fence needs to cover all 5000+ miles of the U.S. southern AND northern border.

Second, we should provide a path to a guest worker program that entails admitting guilt for entering the country illegally and paying a fine. This program would be open for only 90 to 120 days. People that come forward during this time would be allowed to enter the guest worker program provided they have no criminal record (beyond entering the country illegally). This permit will allow individuals to work in the U.S. legally for up to five years, after which, they must return to their home country. The fine could be paid over time, but if the worker fails to continue payment, their permit would be revoked. The guest worker program is NOT a path to citizenship.

Third, people that enter the guest worker program will be issued biometric identification cards that contain fingerprint, photograph, and DNA data. Employers will use ID cards to confirm a person’s eligibility to work legally in the U.S. For U.S citizens, proof of citizenship will be required for employment.
Fourth, anyone in the country illegally that fails to come forward during the program window will be permanently barred from obtaining a guest worker permit or from obtaining U.S. citizenship.

Fifth, any illegal alien caught in the U.S. after the initial 90-day period without an I.D. card, will be photographed, fingerprinted, DNA sampled, and deported to their country of origin and will never be allowed to enter the U.S. again.

Sixth, anyone deported who returns to the U.S. illegally is guilty of a class D felony with a mandatory minimum sentence of one year and deportation to their country of origin.

Seventh, any U.S. citizen or foreign national involved with smuggling of illegal aliens, i.e. providing false documents, transportation of illegal aliens across the border, or assisting in smuggling operations is guilty of a Class B felony with a mandatory minimum sentence of not less than ten years. Providing food, clothing, and shelter to illegal aliens would be a misdemeanor, with a sentence of up to one year in jail.

Eighth, any business owner and/or company personnel who knowingly provides employment to an illegal alien is guilty of a Class D felony punishable by fines and/or imprisonment increasing in severity based on the number of occurrences, from one to five years.

Ninth, medical facilities that treat illegal aliens must report it immediately or forfeit federal reimbursement dollars (Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) for that patient. States are free to allocate their funds as they see fit, consistent with this program.

And tenth, guest workers enrolled in the program are eligible to apply for citizenship after completing their term as a guest worker, but they must return to their country of origin while waiting for their citizenship application (or additional guest worker permits) to be processed and adjudicated. Applications will be processed in the order they are submitted, and will use the current process for citizenship applications. Anyone remaining illegally in the U.S. after their term as a guest worker permit has expired is guilty of a class D felony. This would eliminate any possibility of another guest worker permit or U.S. citizenship.

Guest workers are not eligible to become citizens by means of marriage. They must complete their terms as a guest worker and submit their applications as described above. Once the first guest worker permit is completed, individuals may request additional guest worker permits and submit their application for citizenship while working in the U.S. on the second permit. Children born in the U.S. can claim citizenship rights, but only if their parents are in the country legally. Having children as citizens of the U.S. will not provide rationale for legal guest workers to stay past their permit limitations. It will however, provide compelling rationale for the citizenship application that goes through the appropriate process.

The U.S. is a country that operates by rule of law. It is imperative that anyone attempting to enter this country understands that breaking the laws of the United States results in serious negative consequences. This program may seem harsh but we can no longer afford to have people streaming across the border. The risks to our homeland are too great. This plan is a compromise between the multiple, and sometimes conflicting needs of border security and the economic impacts of illegal immigration. It opens the door for a very limited time to becoming a legal resident in the U.S., then closes that same door, never to be opened again. If the provisions of this plan are enforced, illegal immigration will no longer be an issue.

Simple Folk Out In Fly-Over Country
Bush, McCain and Pence ... How's that for the modern day Three Stooges? They just don't get it. Millions upon millions of poorly educated, unskilled illegal-aliens have, and continue, to flood across our southern border. Rome is burning while Nero and his quisling Republican Congress fiddle. But, according to the northeast, Rockefeller, big-business wing of the Republican Party, I'm the guy who's not in sync with what's best for this country.

I'm here in North Carolina where we're on the front line of the invasion. Our schools are filling up with kids who don't speak English and it's costing us a fortune. Our hospital Emergency Rooms are clogged with non English speaking non-payers and it's costing us another fortune. The best estimate is that nearly $500,000,000 out of the state's budget is spent on services to illegal-aliens.

The State Police say 20% of all DUI arrests in the state are Latinos and in Charlotte the figure is 25% of all DUI arrests. We've had an incredible number of innocent motorists killed by drunk illegal-aliens. Rape, especially gang rape, seems to be a sport for illegal-alien males. We've got every Latino gang imaginable operating on our streets and Spanish graffiti is now commonplace. Holding them in jail and state prison is costing the taxpayers another fortune.

Four houses down the street from me we've got a nest of them. There are up to a dozen cars and trucks parked on the street, drive and lawn each night. There seems to be a half dozen kids, 3 women and perhaps 8 or 10 males who live there. They built a shed in the back and it seems like one complete family is living in it.

My state, my city, my neighborhood is slowly being turned into a third-world cesspool.

The last Democrat I voted for was Jimmy Carter back in 1976. I can't bring myself to make that mistake again. But, I've come to the conclusion that voting Republican is just as useless, maybe more so.

Rule of laws and wars baloney
I hear all of the speeches on the US being a country run on the rule of law. That only applies in the US when it does not interfere with profit. We are a country at war with terrorism but only when profits are attached.

We open the borders to terrorists because open borders are good for profit and only fight wars in countries where there is the potential for profit. Iraq, Afghanistan, and probably Iran, but not Somalia, Lebanon, North Korea, etc.

We pander to the communists in China (profit) and scorn others such as Cuba and Venezuela (no profit).

We enforce the laws on drugs (no profit) but ignore the laws on immigration and hiring immigrants (profit). We even extend the laws on drugs to seniors going to Canada to buy prescription drugs (no profit) but then have the proceeds from the development of new drugs fund the FDA that regulates the drug companies. (profit). The list goes on and is long.

It is this hypocrisy that is ruining the repu-tation of the US in every corner of the world. We talk tough and then turn our backs on corruption. Our leaders have no credibility and Americans are loosing theirs for appearing to support it. If it is the US brand of Democracy that we give to countries, the people of those countries do not want it. Elections all over the world are going against the US model and US friendly leaders, Palestinians, Iraqis, Latin Americas including Mexico (almost), Germans, Italians, Japanese, .... and much of the move is to the left.

We are on the last legs of being a powerful nation and on the road to a big fall. It is not a failure of leadership, they are right on plan. It is all about the profits.

Illegal aliens amd republican employers
By all means, enforce the laws. Washington is playing into the hands of the illegals. There is an illegal woman "in sanctuary" in a Chicago church There is already a court ordered deportation order. The immigration folk, on probable orders from WashDC and Rove, will do nothing. As a consequence she has the authority of some Mexican goddess. If they had gobe in right away, the matter would have been yesterday's news.

This weekend we are seeing a four day march by advocates of changing the laws, They know what the laws are. Enforce them.

Rove has some cockamamie idea that these illegal aliens and their naturalized compadres will become GOP members. The Dems here have been organizing these puppies for decades.

The companies that hire illegals are subject to fines. Get to it. Continue the fines.

We have a large underclass already which -- if welfare reform is a true bill -- need to find work. It is going to increase wages, no doubt about it. But it will lower welfare costs. Every job has a market clearing wage.

The last two days the Chicago Tribune has begun a series on how horrifying things are for the illegals -- no health insurance, etc. Looks like they want to legalize them and provide health insurance. Who will have to pay? The employers.

Translate the article into Spanish and have it shipped to Latin America. You come to this country, you take risks. All our ancestors did -- and with no health insurance themselves.

immigration
I am convinced immigration is not the most important issue facing our country but I am also convinced that unless a "House-like" version of an immigration bill is not passed and signed before the elections a great many Republicans will be "at home" with their money and their votes.

To understand the frustration we Southern California Republicans have with Washington, just come to LA/OC for a few days.

Nativism & Torenst Right-wing Abuse?
It seems that Mr. Novak is more concerned with Republicans 'getting something done' and their losing power because the 'hard-liners of immigration' will not compromise that having EITHER party stand on principal and accomplish WHAT IS RIGHT! He would condemn Tom Tancredo's steadfast standing for our laws and the legal, right handling of the problem rather than denounce the soft, quasi-conservatives like Pense, who are willing to compromise the laws of our sovereign nation in the spirit of just getting something done and in finding common ground with the Left in order to do so. He has inappropriately framed this issue (or at least this article) as being about what parties will take, or remain in, power, but that is not the core issue and is emblematic of why our political dealings have gone so far South for the last 5+ decades. Rather, it is about finding long-term solutions to fix wrongs that have plagued this country for years. This doesn't always get one elected in the short run, but it does protect and strengthen our nation in the long run.

Enough about Novak (as it is not about him, either!); let's address the problem. First of all, as stated by others above, we need to apply the correct, righteous handling of the problem for the long-term good of our country: close the boarders, enforce the boarders through deportation and then decide what to do with the law-breakers that are already here. Secondly, to say that the workers are a boon for our economy is just plain dishonest, as it has been well-documented the drain they are in terms of social & medical services. Also, if we need more workers, let's put our over-weight teens, non-high school grads and welfare recipients to work rather than bringing in folks from other countries, many of whom have no loyalty or love for this country other than the money they can make. This brings me to my third point, which is that many of these folks are not assimilating into our country and embracing it ideologically, as was evidenced by the recent immigration protests. We could easily end up in a similar position as France now is as demonstrated by their insane riots conducted by their un-assimilated immigrants.

Therefore, we need a three-pronged approach to this problem: stop the tide of illegals (including guest workers or any other such nonsensical designation) and bust companies who employ them. Two, change the way we look at the lower-paying job, utilizing the forces within our borders to work just as they did before illegals became our mainstay for economic machine's diet. Lastly, deal with those that have already broken our laws to come and live here. This issue is not only a legal one, but one of national security.

ziggy
Conservative Republican threatening to vote Democrat or not to vote at all reminds me of a little piece of doggerel -

Me and Cy went to the circus.
Cy got hit with a bowling pim.
We're gonna' fix that goshdarned circus.
We'll buy a ticket and won't go in.

Any conservative that votes Democrat to get even is not being true to his own values, and is letting emotions, instead of logic, control his/her life. Any Republican who doesn't vote at all is not fulfilling his duty as a citizen of this country.

This year, I'm not giving my cash or time to the GOP because I am no longer sure of what they stand for. But, in November, I'll vote for the best candidate, and that will almost always be a Republican.

immigration
If the Republicans really wanted to remain in power, they would have secured the border. This is step number one and would have been a winner. Secure the border and then deal with the illegals.

gridlock
Povidus has it right. Our only protection is gridlock. Personally, I will divide my future votes between the Constitution Party where a candidate is on the ballot and the Republicans.

Neither party..
enforces the immigration laws on the books. Rather than enforce those laws, Republicans (RINOs) are using this to appear "compassionate" while the Democrat's so-called reform laws do not address the illegals but rather seek to fine those companies who hire them while still taxing legal citizens to provide social benefits to the illegals. Both sides are failing us on illegal immigration by allowing the illegal aliens to break laws which, if legal citizens broke would result in their imprisonment.

(Politically correct racism.)

Perhaps the Tide Has Not Reached DC?
I continue to struggle to understand the positions taken (or not taken) by our leadership in Washington.

It also seems to me that many of the nation's pundits - including several on Town Hall - fail to appreciate the gravity of the tide of illegal immigrants sweeping up from the south.

Is it that they have not yet reached DC? Or is it simply that they are not yet buying homes in gated communities to convert into boarding houses for day workers?

These flood waters do not seem to be a problem to them.....yet.

But what happens when the 12 milllion get their amnesty and each of them brings in another 3.5 (or so) additional family members, most of whom will need extensive social services?

Who will pay for those services, Mr. Novak?

RINO Coup'
Isn't that just ducky tanabear!! A supposedly conservative web site with politically correct words you can't use in a post. Ya just gotta love it.

BTW, what's wrong with this site? I tried several times to sign in using the password I chose when I registered and was rejected. It worked OK the a few days ago. When I requested my password be emailed me I was given a new one not of my choice. Anyone else have a similar problem. Just curious.

Richard Nixon is famous for saying Republican candidates should "run to the right, govern from the middle"...that is to say, establish conservative bone fides until you get elected. To me, Pence followed that line. A conservative is a conservative because of ideological principles. Those principles establish lines in the sand that no one is allowed to cross or compromise. That fact is something the party leadership either doesn't believe exists or has forgotten. I suspect the Elephant party will have their memory refreshed come November, but it will be to late.

The conservatives of the country started the take over of the Republican party in 1964 with the nominating speech by Ronald Reagan and the acceptance speech of Barry Goldwater. Our opposition within the party was what was then called the Rockefeller Republicans. Over the years as we gained in strength we did take over the party and succeeded in placing it in power in '94. However the RINO'S remained and now have effected a coup'.

Come November I will have had the vote for 48 years and have never voted for a Democrat. I will not this time either, but I also will not support the Republican party with contributions or my vote, thus rewarding it for bad behavior. I will not support a party leadership that interferes in a primary against a conservative candidate to return A Specter to office. I will not support a party that attacks a conservative primary candidate in support of the likes of a Chaffee. In Florida in '04 Katherine Harris was asked to step aside so that Mel Martinez could be elected to the senate. I don't know what pressure was put on her but she did that. Now, two years later the party not only has abandoned her but has actively worked to get challenges to her in the primaries. I will vote for her on the 12th, but in my opinion she will not get party support in the general and will be defeated by Nelson. The prez's brother will be the architect. In passing, I think what the Dems did to Joe Lieberman was despicable. BUT he IS a Democrat. Why has the Republican party not only abandon the Conservative REPUBLICAN candidate in that race but in hushed voices that can easily be heard, actually supported the Democrat?

Bush clueless on immigration
Bush and Rove have mistakenly concluded an "open-door" immigration policy permitting hordes of illiterate, ignorant,low-skilled 3rd world and hispanic immigrants onto our shores will induce many hispanic voters to look favorably upon the GOP on election day. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many Americans of hispanic descent, who came here legally and who thru hard work have made a success of themselves, feel a sense of shame toward Bush and his advisors over the obsequious and servile pandering demonstrated by this administration in a last-gasp effort get their vote. And fair-minded Americans of all persuasions are enraged over the crass political machinations from an administration that so lightly bestows the honor of U.S. citizenship upon a group of people who violate our laws, while law-abiding people who play by the rules must wait for YEARS to gain citizenship. Damn right I'm mad.

Immigration and Sovereign Native Amer-
ican tribal nations are two things that the federal government have allowed to go into latches legal problems by taking little or no action. New York has a problem with both.

Immigration and Republicans
Congress need not do anything about immigration. No new immigration bill is necessary because the laws are already in place to: 1) enforce the border, and 2) deport those here illegally. Since the laws are already on the books, it's the Executive Branch's duty to enforce these laws. The President has failed his duty.

Since nothing will be done about illegal immigration while this President or any Congress is in session (except for trying to shove amnesty down our throats), I vote for gridlock the next two years. Gridlock would be good: no new taxes, no new spending programs, no new federal regulation, nothing. Perhaps two years of gridlock will make the GOP wake up, someone decent will come out of the woodwork to run for President (who out there can I vote for now? McCain. . ? Neocon dream. Allen. . ? Phony. Rudy. . ? Statist. Romney. . ? Mormon.) Two years of gridlock may be the best thing for those who consider themselves conservative.

What?
I don't understand. George Bush is clear in his insistence on an amnesty program. As far as Pence is concerned, I saw him on C Span, and what he described seemed to be a program that simultaneously implemented a guest workers program with a path to citizenship, while offering a promise of secured borders. I don't believe the promise.

For one thing, there is a general fuzziness about amnesty/guest worker, path to citizenship. To me, the confusion that I feel is largely based on my distrust George Bush. He demonstrates that he is willing to ignore national sovereignty and national interests to implement his globalist agenda.

For Bob Novack to describe Bush, McCain and Pence as dreading a descent into "nativism" really shows how elitist and out of touch with the majority of the American people they are.

The republicans may very well lose control of government in the upcoming elections. If they do it will be because they worked at losing it. We will all suffer because of them.

About the only thing you got right Novak
Is that immigration is the #1 issue for American voters this Nov.

Much of the House will remain - except those opposed to the plan passed in Dec., the rest will be GONE.

Much of the Senate will be GONE, replaced by any one not holding all these cockamamie ideas such as guest worker, or path to citizenship.

It is an issue that IS dividing the Republican party but also the dems are having some trouble with it too.

The American PEOPLE want a SECURE BORDER, not a virtual border. We want to keep SOME people from entering and nothing the Senate has discussed will do that.

Lastly, ANY PATH TO CITIZENSHIP is just WRONG. Granting lawBREAKERS rights not given to others who DON'T BREAK LAWS is the LIE the American people see right through. And we HAD AMNESTY before, what did it get us? 20 million more aliens.

Pandora's Box
Mike Pence is no rising star. His guest worker program could in no way be described as amnesty for illegals. When someone goes against President Bush their hail as some rising star or another John McCain. Pence's guest worker program was just dumb. Who in the world is going to pick up and leave and then apply for a visa in which to enter again. It's Pence's ideas lets just all twelve million of us volunteer to leave with our American born children and then wait for who knows how long to re-enter. Does that make sense. Rising star my foot. President Bush should have spank him and sent him to his room for coming up with something so dumb. Those against the war were just waiting for someone to open that Pandora's Box. Anthing to get our troops out of Iraq and on the borders. Who in the world was so shortsighted not to see this coming. Now we're hailing that nut Pat Buchanan as some prophecy guru who's done nothing but bash Republicans and Conservatives. When the polls show the American people more concerned about the economy and immigration and the war in Iraq as almost dead last what does that tell you. It tells me you gambled wrong and now you have given those who are clueless what this war means less interest and less patience when our very lives depends on well the American people knows the dangers of fighting terrorism.
