Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- Pressure is mounting within the Senate Democratic caucus to strip Sen. Joseph Lieberman of senior committee positions if he defeats Democratic nominee Ned Lamont in Connecticut, but Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is expected to beat that back.

Lieberman will remain part of the Democratic caucus even though he would be elected as an independent after losing to Lamont in the Democratic primary. Many liberal senators, angry with Lieberman for supporting President Bush on Iraq, don't want him to chair a committee in a Democratic-controlled Senate. He now is senior Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee.

Reid says nothing publicly but is expected to save Lieberman. Disciplining fellow Democrats is not Reid's style, and Lieberman's vote could be crucial in taking Senate control from the Republicans. Reid and Lieberman also have a particularly close personal relationship.

VOTING ON BOLTON

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will meet Sept. 7 for a second try at recommending confirmation of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, but it may fail again for lack of Republican unanimity.

Republican Sen. George Voinovich, who deprived Bolton of a favorable committee vote in 2005, has changed his mind because of Bolton's performance at the UN under President Bush's recess appointment. However, Sen. Chuck Hagel, the committee's second-ranking Republican, has been less impressed by Bolton. He will decide his course based on a meeting with the UN ambassador after Labor Day.

Even if Hagel votes no, the committee could send Bolton to the Senate floor with an unfavorable recommendation as it did last year. The issue is whether the Democratic leadership will block his confirmation with a filibuster.

NERVOUS REPUBLICANS

A political indicator of hard times ahead for Republicans is frantic activity during the current congressional recess by GOP staffers contemplating life under a Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

Several Republican aides, including many working for House members from safe seats, are seeking employment elsewhere. Most of them have never worked under Democratic control and dread the prospect of minority status on Capitol Hill.

Other aides, working on House committee staffs, would lose those jobs in a Democratic House and want to transfer now to work for safe Republican members.

ENDANGERED HAWAIIAN

Sen. John Kerry has included Sen. Daniel Akaka, a 16-year Senate veteran facing a serious threat in the Sept. 24 Hawaii Democratic primary, among three endangered anti-war Senate candidates in a personal appeal for funds.

A recent e-mail dispatched by Kerry ("Support Strong Leaders Who Aren't Afraid to Tell the Truth About Iraq") requests funds for the campaigns of Sen. Bob Menendez in New Jersey, Ned Lamont in Connecticut and Akaka. Menendez was recently appointed to the Senate, and Lamont is opposing Sen. Joseph Lieberman. Akaka until recently had been considered a safe incumbent but now faces a formidable primary challenge by Rep. Ed Case, first elected to Congress in 2002.

Akaka lost prestige this year when he failed to pass his signature bill to give native Hawaiians the status of an Indian tribe. He has stopped his practice of always following his powerful senior Hawaiian colleague, Sen. Daniel Inouye, even when he deserts the Democratic party line. Akaka did not join Inouye recently in voting for the offshore oil-drilling bill.

MONEY FOR PATRICK

A contributor to the re-election campaign of Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy of Rhode Island will gain admission to a "New England clambake dinner" Saturday Oct. 7 at the famous Kennedy compound on Cape Cod in Hyannis, Mass.

Washington lobbyists received solicitations from the congressman and his father and stepmother, Sen. and Mrs. Edward M. Kennedy. Requested contributions were $1,000 per person, $5,000 per host, $10,000 for a co-chair and $20,000 for a chair.

Even a chairmanship will not buy an overnight stay at the Kennedy compound. "Reservations are suggested at the Four Points by Sheraton in Hyannis," says the invitation.

About Lieberman...
I am amazed at the Democrats' animosity toward Joe Lieberman, a party faithful who was nearly the Vice President of the United States and who today would be the Democratic front runner for President if the Dems had won the White House in 2000 and 2004 is absolutely being railroaded by his party. Based on his voting record he votes the party line 9 out of 10 times. That will not change if he wins as an Independent. But the Dems hate him just because he supports the President of his country on the war issue. This is the same war that a large majority of the Democratic congressman and senators voted for, but now loudly denounce. I guess it is okay to be a Democrat who dissents, as long as you don't dissent with any part of the Democratic party line. Yes Lieberman lost the primary, and yes he has a right to run as an Independent. Polls indicate he will win, yet the Democrats will do all they possibly can to stop him. What a pile of stinking hypocrites. The thing that I don't understand is why the Republican even stays in the race while polling in the single digits. He should drop out so that Republicans can vote for Joe in good conscious, even though a vote for Joe is a vote for the Democrats. At least it would keep the most radical faction of the liberal wing of the party at bay.

Children are at the helm of the Democrat
party at least in the primaries. If they don't get their way they'll-well behave like children. Joe has the guts to stand up to them at HuffPo and Kos. You won't see that courage from Kerry. So far Hillary has not bowed down to the pressure and that is to her credit. I'm sure the Republicans would like to see a Feingold/Lamont ticket or a Kerry or Gore and anybody ticket. If you can't stand up to the kids in their rooms on computers in their mom and dad's house, how can you stand up to Ahmadinejead or Assad or Kim Jong Il or even Chirac? I beleive that the democratic electorate will take control in the election and be the responsible opponent they should be.

This whole war argument
is just plain offensive to me. You can be a peace-nick and chant verse about loving one another or you can be a war monger looking to nuke anything that offends you. Both ends of the spectrum are kooky and should be avoided.

Sen Lieberman has grasped the truth of the matter. Islamic controled countries absolutely feel the need, as a religous command, to dominate the world. That means Americans and 75% of the world has to either convert or live under Islamic Law if "they" win. The only other alternative is death.

The planners in Washington have found, or perhaps stumbled, into a solution to this threat. That is to corrupt the islamic population with western vices and freedoms to dilute their religous fever. It is working in Turkey and now we are trying to put that to good effect in Irag. Why people don't get this concept is beyond my understanding.

Irag is an ideal spot to do this as it is not only centrally located in the Middle East but it has a long and deep history of religion. Irag's very location divides the muslim countries geographically, perfectly. Saddam had already broken the back of the religion but he was a nut-ball and very aggressive. Although Iraq could have been constrained for many more years it was only a matter of time before they either handed off WMD's to someone else or used them themselves. That was my greatest long term fear and why I supported the War. Still do.

Unfortunately while we are working to put a "political cancer" (freedom) in the center of the region Iran has stepped forward to take the lead in world terrorism. By now everyone should see where Irag was heading by the next generation. Iran is going to further disrupt world harmony, or at least the current level of peace, to fulfill their wish to prove Allah Is Great.

I really think we are headed for another World War centered in Europe and the Middle East. It may be just like WWII except this time the muslims have already infiltrated Europe and the UK. This one is going to be real ugly and most assuredly Atomic.

We better hurry up and finish our goal in Irag so our "cure" can spread before the real shooting starts. I think Lieberman "gets it."

Dems in control?
If republicans fail to vote, en masse, come election time, or if they choose to throw their votes away ( in order to be righteous in defeat), then we WILL have the government we chose. And it ain't gonna be pretty.

THINK. Think what it will mean if we ALLOW the demonRATS to ever gain control again.

What does it matter
I am amazed that anyone can find any room between the parties for an independant. I see so little difference between the parties there is no one to vote for. Dems have no ideas but spend more money and Reps cant execute the simplest task without screwing it up, oh, and spending more money. There is not an effective leader in the bunch. They are all muney grubbers and suck up to the corporations for special interests and that is the platform. I can't find coherance in any of them or from 99% of what is written on this site. We have serious problems that make even terrorism a fly speck and nothing is being even talked about let alone doing anything. They are money grubbing fools and I don't see one of them that cares a whit about anyong but themselves.

Dangerous Democrats
If the Democrats gain in power, the destruction can become a reality and devisate our children's future. The Democrats are Hell bent on educating our children trough the public schools the very unhuman and an un-natural indoctrination of the pan-sexaul tree. I wonder if concerned parents compare this education to the family tree of life. Life or death, this is what our country is facing, the domestic war. The war of whom will educate our children and what the future holds for us, mankind???? To climb the pan-sexual tree, an activity for chilren?????
