Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- The renewed push for Senate confirmation of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations has picked up Jewish support that could neutralize New York's two Democratic senators.

Sens. Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton both voted against cutting off debate with cloture nearly a year ago when a Democratic filibuster prevented Bolton's confirmation. Jewish leaders, impressed with Bolton's support of Israel at the UN under a recess appointment, have urged the New Yorkers to back cloture this time. Schumer, praising Bolton's support for Israel, has said another filibuster is "unlikely." Clinton has not stated her current position.

A footnote: Republican Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio, by switching his position to support Bolton, now provides a Bolton majority in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota has pleaded with Voinovich and other doubtful fellow Republicans that the U.S. government should not be deprived of its voice at the UN.

MITT RISING

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, trailing in national polls of Republican voters, has the lead in organizing early primary states for the 2008 presidential run, in the opinion of neutral GOP politicians.

Romney is particularly strong in Iowa, where caucuses begin the presidential hunt. A win there would swell Romney's now anemic identification among Republican voters.

A footnote: A report in this column that Rudy Giuliani intends to run for president has been confirmed by one of the former New York mayor's closest Republican friends. He said Giuliani definitely is running.

BYRD DECLINING

Sen. Robert Byrd, the 88-year-old senior Democratic senator, has started to cast his votes from the well of the Senate for the first time in his 47-year career. To colleagues, that pointed up Byrd's declining physical condition.

Byrd has been a stickler for "old school" Senate procedures, including senators voting from behind their desks. He has become a solitary follower of that practice. But, using two canes, he now has trouble getting to his desk and joins colleagues in the well of the Senate to vote in front of the presiding officer's chair.

After the Republican failure to recruit the popular Rep. Shelley Moore Capito to run against Byrd in West Virginia, he has been heavily favored this year to win his ninth term against industrialist John Raese. Republican hopes have hinged on public perception of Byrd's frailty.

MURTHA'S MISTAKE

Rep. John Murtha, responding Wednesday to a defamation lawsuit filed by a Marine accused of killing Iraqi civilians in 2005, mistakenly said Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich had been "charged in the incident at Haditha." In fact, no charges have been filed against anybody.

Murtha quickly issued a new press release Wednesday deleting "charged" and describing Wuterich as leader of "the squad accused of killing two dozen civilians." The lawsuit accused Murtha of spreading "false and malicious lies" about the sergeant in his May 19 statement which said Marines "killed a number of civilians without anybody firing at them."

Although Murtha has carried his western Pennsylvania district by landslide margins and was unopposed in 2004, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry won it with only 51 percent. Diana Irey, a Republican county commissioner, is waging a vigorous campaign, and last week accused Murtha of "regular and willful misstatements of key facts."

LAIRD ON RUMMY

Melvin R. Laird, who as secretary of Defense was Donald Rumsfeld's fellow Nixon Cabinet member 37 years ago, has publicly declared his old colleague should have left his post after the 2004 election on grounds that one term is enough to lead the Pentagon.

Laird endorsed the one-term limit in Atlanta June 9 in a conference of former Defense secretaries. "I told that to Rummy, that he should stay only four years," said Laird. "He didn't pay any attention to me."

Bush advisers, with no replacement in hand, say Rumsfeld can stay in the Pentagon as long as he wants.

Mitt Romney -- the winner in 2008!
Robert Novak is the first major columnist to correctly call the Republican nominee for president in 2008 and the winner of the general election. Mitt Romney. Romney has, by far, the least amount of political and personal baggage of any potential candidate (or either party) and his strengths will be exactly what the American public will be looking for. I'm a conservative Midwestern type who assumed he inherited his money and he was elected governor in a deep blue state by being left of Rudy Giuliani. Wrong on both counts.

Read his history, read what he has accomplished and read his goals and beliefs. That he sold his common sense solid conservatism to the majority far-left of Massachusetts was amazing but his success in office has proven his abilities. He'll get past the "Mormon Thing" to where it will be an ADVANTAGE. The media won't be able to lay a glove on him. Romney will frustrate them to the extreme! He has the disarming wit and personal charm of Reagan and with vision and ability to match.

Check out the grass roots organizations already forming in anticipation of him throwing his hat into the ring. www.massformitt.com and www.americansformitt.com are two of dozens.

Bolton's New Backers
This is good news for Bolton's chances for nomination approval this time. I have been a fan of Bolton's ever since he was first vilified as a 'junk-yard-dog'. He has certainly lived up to the reputation and thereby earned a lot of support. We need him at the security council sessions to defend the interests of the US vs the UN. And I sincerely hope that he lives up to the reputation which he has earned.

John Murtha
John Murtha has disgraced his country and the brave men and women who defend this country while in harm's way. He must be held to account.

novak
novak, novak,
he's our man,
if he can't do it,
nobody can .

Mitt in '08
I am very much a Giuliani supporter, but I really like Mitt Romney as well. I think he has proven conservative leadership and has a sharp appearance and personality. Would he get as much general support as Giuliani? I really don't know how much support he'd get in a national race. But he doesn't have any major baggage that Giuliani has.

Bolton cease-fire
Bolton's quick assent to a Lebanon cease-fire reinforces the judgment that Israel's military performance has been disappointing. Heavy air strikes have caused much damage - without rooting out hizbullah. A steady stream of Iranian missile resupply to hizbullah can only make the situation worse for the Jewish state. So-called `volunteers' from Iran can always buck up the Islamists. ( We know the `volunteer' ploy well from communist days). Since Bolton is a known hawk, having him up front in arranging a cease-fire seems the safest way to cut losses.

Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani
Neither of them is a conservative. They may be to the right of Hillary Clinton, but not much. Their support of gun control laws and being pro-abortion (don't call it pro-choice. If you won't condemn it you condone it. Don't split that hair with me) makes them vulnerable. They won't fly.

Romney
As a Massachusetts resident, I deeply regret any previous support for Mitt. He has proven to be one of the most finger in the wind politicians I have ever seen. In just the past few days he redirected the tiny sliver of state money that was intended for '05 flood relief in western Mass (Pittsfield, etc..) to the North Shore communities who were flooded last spring. Why? Because western Mass is politically insignifigant but the North Shore has many powerful folks from campaign contributors to allies in the legislature.

He has spun his abortion position so much, even a political junkie such as myself is not sure how he describes himself this week. And his policy on stem cell research is a fence-straddling joke.

In the Gay Marriage debate, he has bent over backwards to avoid sending the issue through the most direct constitutional amendment route. Instead he changed course midstream and now supports a petition that, at best, will come before Mass voters in '08. (Long after he is gone from Beacon Hill, but conveniently during a Presidential Campaign. Gee, what a surprise.)

Taxes are another issue where Mitt hides his true stripes. Although he is a so-called No New Taxes Republican, Mitt raised just about every state "fee" astronomically. A first time Drivers License now costs almost a $100. (He only doubled renewal fees rather than quintupling them). And don't forget that he claimed on his personal federal tax return for mortgage deduction purposes that his primary residence was in Utah, until a newspaper in MA got wind of it. "Taxes for thee, but not for me."

He also compromised on a disasterous state healthcare bill that basically requires employers with 10 or more employees to provide health insurance or face a fine. Worse yet, if the employer doesn't provide insurance and an employee has more than $50K in medical costs, the state can send the employer the bill.

Romney has been wrong for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and he is wrong for America. Period.

John Murtha
Mr. Murtha an Ex-Marine in Viet Nam??? Two Purple Hearts??? Combat Related??? I was a Corpsman in North Korea USMC. Mr.Murtha being an officer is hard to believe. "Semper Fi", "Always Faithful" He sure is not a "Chesty" Puller. General Puller would have put him in his place for not supporting his Marines.

Senator Murtha
Mr. Novak:

Might you find it in yourself to accumulate the military records of Senator Murtha and reveal to the public those findings, whatever they may be?

It appears to me that whenever he has been asked to reveal & disclose his military record to the publc, he has refused to do so.

It therefore, further appears to me that he is hiding something.

I stronly 'sense' that revealing his military record will uncover another John Kerry-like 'blemished military record', such as the those 'boat' (sorry, can't recall the whole name right now), veterans revealed about John Kerry.

Anyway ..... thank you for all you now do and all you've done throughout your career to keep us properly informed. Don't ever stop.

Best of everything to you and your loved ones.

Joseph Zito

John Bolton
As to confirming Bolton, he was not qualified, and he is NOT qualified.

What little of his activities at the UN that have been in the news that I could stand to watch, I consider him to be a disgrace and embarresment to the United States.

He is just another neoCON hack trying to destroy the world.

Modern Day Taitor
Good Joob Novak

You have Murtha on the ropes, now deliver the final blow to this Modern Day Benedict Arnold. Reveal his militarty record, a straight jab, and send him down for the count.

Murtha You are Traitor Scum.

Raidencraig
Do you really believe that the Muslim hatred of the U.S. is completely due to our unwavering support of Israel?
You mus be painfully naive and completely ignorant of history regarding Muslim "tolerance" of other faiths and their particular view of infidels and the prescribed treatment-
Also, when did we ever have the "credibility" that you mourn so in the Middle East?
Are you not old enough to remember the overthrow of the Shah, and the hordes of Muslims protesting and screaming in the streets? At that time,
we had a certifiable pacifist in the oval office, so how does that line up with your reasoning that everything that has gone wrong in the Middle East is THIS administration's fault-
A good many of the problems that we are now having to face are directly due to blunders by the Carter and Clinton administrations.
And yet these two failed ex-presidents cannot simply shut-up and go away, they still must have their worthless opinions heard-

I take it that you are none too fond of lox and bagels,it really shows, if you know what I mean!

Giiliani will never get the republican nomination although he might get the vice-presidential nomination. He's for a woman's right to an abortion and for gay rights. In short, too respectful of a woman's right to choose and too respectful of other peoples' differences, something the republican party is way short of.
Romney's a Morman. Will never happen.

Murtha
Mr. Novak, please, please dig into Murtha's "war record"....I, like many others think he has thing(s) to hide. As an Army widow, with a son and son-in-law fighting in Iraq, I find Mr. Murtha totally disgusting and nothing more than a traitor to our country and our beloved military! The country needs to see this man as he really is....kind of like we all came to see Kerry.

Too many cooks spoil the Republican brot
It is normal that when a party in power has a president not able to run again there will be a myriad of choices. Certianly, Republicans would seem to have more choices than Democrats. I am a Conservative first and a Republican though my heart is leaning more to Libertarian. I am also a conservative Christian, a retired teacher of history and government, and have been active in Virginia politics for years.

This is the way it appears to me and I don't know but a few insiders, not the many our noble columnist knows and on a first name basis too as he does.

I have problems with most of our possibles. John McCain would seem like the one who could most likely win if against a Hillary or a Gore. I would likely support him because I want a winner and we need one badly in 2008. However, he has had a liberal track record. The most positive thing is the film made on him and his POW days and from this I do have to feel he is a real man, an Eisenhower type. But no Ronald Reagan who I loved.

I love some things about gutsy Rudy, but he is too liberal in social issues. Some in my state talk about George Allen, and he is loved by some conservative talk show hosts. I just can't feel he is ready, but he'd be great as a VEEP. Thumbs down on Mitt Romney. He does dodge issues as someone wrote in this forum and I have Mormon friends who say that if he is a true Mormon it can mean a real difference in his approach to foreign policy. As "the chosen race" which we as Americans are to those of the Mormon faith, what would prevent him from nuking anyone who disagrees with us. Before you shout that I am being extreme, I suggest you study history and that faith.

I would support any of the above against a Democrat of course as we are at war. A religious and a culture war. I must say that none of the above are number one with me.

I support Condi Rice. I don't agree with her on everything, but she has to back the president. Giving away land to the Palestinians, a group of fugitives who were kicked out of other countries to begin with, was a major mistake. However, I think she would be a great leader. It is time we had a woman for president, not Hillary; but a Republican. It is time we had an African American and that would be good for the very soul of our nation and would heal many old wounds.

It is time for Condi Rice, but she may have to be drafted. Yes, I have bought some "Condi for President" buttons already.

Can't support fraudulent Mormons!
When Mormons stop trying to convince people that they are Christians, I'll be able to support them for office. Although I agree with Mitt Romney on nearly every issue, this desire to muddy the waters of Christianity is too much for me. I can vote for a Mormon who openly admits that his religion is not Christian, that he believes his god once walked around as a man on another planet, that he rejects the trinity (believing instead in an endless stream of gods), and that he hopes one day to become a god himself. But until Mormons admit what they are, I can only ally myself to them in a limited fashion.

Military records of Murtha/Kerry
I've seen both these names besmirched, despite their heroism. Why? Because they're Democrats? Why? Bush/Cheney, etc., skipped out I guess....

So anti-Murtha/Kerry people need to show their proof here, now, and always.

P---EEEEE---UUUUU!!!! It stinks!!! Is Sean Hannity here?

Romney and Mormons
The whole debate about Mormonism as a legitimate Christian movement is a waste of time. Do they believe in Christian doctrines as taught by Christ in the Bible, and accept Christ's divinity? Sounds Christian to me. It's like trying to say that Judaism isn't an Abrahamic religion, because it's not your particular brand and rejects doctrines which your religion has long held as key tenets.

That being said, do I as a Mormon support a Romney candidacy? No. I do not think his governing credentials hardly as glowing as those of Rudy, who stopped the breakdown of social order in New York and directed a superb example of small government principles to work in the largest city in the nation. Furthermore, I believe him the staunchest defender in word and deed of the principles of liberal democracy against Islamist totalitarianism of all the candidates, and hope he can have a chance to work as Roosevelt and Reagan did in their times. Romney may have a few good points, but religious beliefs are ultimately so irrelevant in a candidate. What matters is his/her grounding in the political and moral bases of liberal democracy, and solid footing there transcends style or choice of worship. In a nation as religiously diverse as ours, that's ultimately what unites us.

Romney, Mormons in govt
Of all the GOP contenders for 2008, Romney most reflects the positions and attitudes of the conservative base, ie, qualifications for judges, abortion, fiscal policy, etc.

For those few misguided and ill-informed who challenge his Christianity, and this is no forum to debate religion, the following are an abbreviated list of Mormons at the highest levels of government who have served their country well (and without the scrutiny a Romney candidacy seems to have generated): Harry Reid, D-NV (current Senate Minority Leader); Gordon Smith, R-OR; Gen. Brent Scowcroft, Bush 41 Nat'l Security Advisor; Mike Leavitt, current Secy. of Housing; Bay Buchanan, U.S. Treasurer; David Kennedy, Secy. of Treasury; Ezra T. Benson, Secy. of Agriculture; plus dozens of governors , senators and congressmen over the years from several states.

Though I'm personally a great admirer of Giuliani, and think he would have wide appeal nationally, he would have to assure the conservative base of the most important of his political philosophies: his criteria for Supreme Court appointments. At this critical point in our history, there is no greater threat to our democracy than the judiciary!

jackrabbit...
It's easy--all Kerry has to do is release his records to ALL as President Bush did. He hasn't and he won't.

reply to Kanawah and thoughts on Rom-bo
Kanawah:

You are right - Mr. Bolton is not qualified for the UN. He is a forceful non-appeaser who doesn't give the time of day to those who believe that diplomatic surrender to Islamo fascists and neo-communists (Russia / China). If he was a pasta spined weenie who tried to make nice with everyone, then he would be most eminently qualified.

At to Mitt:

I am a Massachusetts resident and I voted for Mitt. But that was because he was the closest thing to a Conservative running that had a chance of winning. That's sort of like saying I am going to vacation in Worcester because it the closest thing to Orlando we have around here in Massachusetts. Mass conservatives often have to settle for less.

The point here is this, Mitt and Rudy are not really running for POTUS, they are really running for VP. That they have a VERY good chance of picking up.

It's about time
With the war in Iraq, the way the United Nation votes, and Hezbollah at the doorstep of Israel you would think Bolton would have gotten Jewish support sooner then this. As a matter of fact I can't see where the Democrats ever cared if Israel survived or not. It must be that not caring if Israel survived or not because the Democrats sure has gotten the support from a lot of the Jewish people.

Giuliani or Romney
If that's the best the Republican Party has to offer I might be staying home along with several million other Republican/independent voters in 2008. I suggest people start looking hard at the governor of Mississippi, especially now that Allen has shown his cooked pasta vertebra.

The John Bolton Tenure
Several folks have been arguing that John Bolton should be recalled from the U.N.

I agree; he should be recalled.

But he should be the ABSOLUTELY LAST member of the U.S. delegation to be so recalled.

Guliani is great, Romney...hmm
Guliani would have my vote, not sure about Romney.
