Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Bob Filner of California was so impressed by Al Gore's movie about global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth," that he has volunteered to head any campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination that might be launched by the former vice president.

Although Gore has professed no intention to attempt a presidential rerun, his film-boosting tour has built nationwide party support. Filner, who recently survived a primary election challenge in his San Diego district, is a seven-term congressman who would chair the House Veteran Affairs Committee if Democrats win control this year.

A footnote: Filner was the only Jewish House member among 28 who signed Rep. Dennis Kucinich's resolution advocating a Middle East cease-fire. Filner immediately was contacted by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the pro-Israel lobbying organization.

PELOSI'S SHUFFLE

House Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi, before hitting Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for criticizing Israeli conduct in the Mideast crisis, refused to sign a House resolution backing Israel.

House Majority Leader John Boehner declined Pelosi's request that the resolution call on both Israel and Hezbollah to minimize civilian casualties. Protracted negotiations between the leaders failed to reach agreement. Rep. Tom Lantos, ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee, did sign the resolution, along with Boehner and International Relations Chairman Henry Hyde.

Pelosi was not alone in scolding al-Maliki. After the Iraqi premier concluded his address to Congress, prominent Democrats peppered him with criticism that linked him to President George W. Bush.

PAGING SCHUMER

Republican senators, in seeking renewed debate on judicial confirmations before the November elections, want to spotlight Sen. Charles Schumer of New York on national television.

Schumer, who heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, was one of the most aggressive Judiciary Committee members questioning Supreme Court nominees John Roberts and Samuel Alito. During those hearings, Schumer expressed to colleagues frustration with his inability to target the conservative nominees.

In the belief that Schumer's performance hurt the Democratic cause, GOP senators want a high-profile nomination fight. During Tuesday's debate leading to Senate confirmation of Jerome Holmes as a circuit judge, Schumer voted no but uncharacteristically did not speak.

OHIO GOP COLLAPSE

Republican senators at last week's Tuesday luncheon meeting were stunned by news from Ohio of the Columbus Dispatch poll showing Sen. Mike DeWine behind his Democratic challenger, Rep. Sherrod Brown, by 8 percentage points.

The GOP senators had taken for granted that Sens. Rick Santorum in Pennsylvania and Conrad Burns in Montana are in trouble for re-election. However, it was widely assumed in Washington that DeWine was in relatively good shape because Brown is too liberal for Ohio.

Ohio, long regarded as the national key to Republican fortunes, is shaping up as a disaster area for the GOP in the wake of Gov. Bob Taft's unpopular administration. The Dispatch poll has Democratic Rep. Ted Strickland leading Secretary of State Ken Blackwell by 20 percentage points for governor.

PARTISANSHIP TRIUMPHS

Public signs of rare bipartisan cooperation on the superheated issue of abortion last Tuesday proved an illusion, when the Democratic leadership blocked a bill to strengthen state restrictions.

Republican Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, sponsor of a bill prohibiting transportation across state lines to avoid a state's parental notification or consent laws, worked out one amendment with liberal Sen. Barbara Boxer of California. Such a bill had passed the House many times, but never before won Senate approval. The 65-to-34 vote was approved by 14 Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (but not Boxer).

However, when a routine motion was made to send the measure to a conference resolving differences with the House bill, Senate Minority Whip Richard Durbin objected. Since polls show 80 percent national approval of this kind of legislation, Ensign has called for public pressure against Democratic obstruction. If that does not work, attempted parliamentary maneuvers would be long and difficult.

Wingo: LOL!
I stand corrected!

But your post raised an interesting thought (at least interesting to me).

If Gore-the-Moron-Down-the-Block has a journalism degree, how can he put out such an inaccurate portrayal of climatological change as "Inconvenient Truth" and make any claim to intellectual honesty or impartiality?

Of course, as soon as I wrote that sentence, the answer to my own question popped into my head: Journalist=NYT=leftist="truth doesn't matter, outcome does"=partisan journalism. Obviously taught in Journalistic Ethics 101.

Gore in '08 indeed
Al Gore is definately the most plausible ticket for '08 as far as the Democrats are concerned. He was fortunate enough to not be in Washington to support the Iraq war and then make excuses (the way Edwards, Clinton, Kerry, and Biden all did). He has been traveling with a message since losing in 2000, and has been consistant.

One only needs to look at history. Nixon loses in 1960 in a close election and comes back in wins two terms later. I don't think Gore is a winner for the White House, but definately the nomination.

BrianR
Gore for Village Idiot?! He's clearly underqualified. As I understand it, the position of village idiot requires an ivy league LAW degree. Gore has an ivy league JOURNALISM degree, which may qualify him for "semi-moron down the block," but never "village idiot." He could never handle the responsibilites that being the idiot for an entire village necessarily entails.

The worst R is better than the best D??
Lincoln Chaffee
Olympia Snowe
George Voinovich
Jim Jeffords
Lamar Alexander
Arlen Specter
Bob Taft
...shall I go on?

These 'hobson's-choices' are not better.
They are analogous to: It's better to kill yourself with a gun as opposed to death by firing squad. I am sorry, but the result is the same.

Perhaps the worst CONSERVATIVE may be better than the best LIBERAL, but (R) does not equal c.

UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment for Lu
Lu,for what it is worth, the president that espoused anti missile defense and originated the "anti anti missile" treaty with the USSR was none other than Richard Milhouse Nixon.

Ohio
We really need Ken to straighten out this mess Taft created. Strickland is not the answer, and the Ohio GOP better snap to it, if those Dispatch poles are anywhere near accurate! Personally, I don't believe they are, and Strickland won't prevail unless the dems crank out the voters. I rather think that after 04, they don't dare repeat their crack for registration shemes.

DeWine will win, too, . . though if there's a need for change anywhere, its in our Senatorial representation. I have to agree, the cronyism sucks big-time, and we need fresh horses in our GOP stable! I must add, however, that we probably need a change of stable-hands , managers, and handlers, or we'll be stuck with the same mess in eight years!

Blackwell better do a bang -up job when he does get in! He'll need a great record of accomplishment when we run him for President in 2012!

A scary visual..
President-- Al Bore. VP-- Hillary Klinton. House Speaker-- Nancy Peloski. UN Secretary-General-- Bill Klinton. Uuugh!

The demo's raving about Al Bores fake disaster movie provides an insight to their thought process. I shudder to think of them in control in time of war.

Socialists
Ehe promblem with most Americans is that ignorant. Taft is and was a diaster, but you don't throw out the baby with the bath water. I tend to look at the over all picture. Who will defend this country against the Islamofacists, surely not the Dems. To bad people don't go back and read some history. If the Dems. win localy or nationaly this coutry is done for. Not all Rep. are created equeal, but the worst Rep. is still better than the best Dem., if there is such a thing as a best Dem. Why are we in this mess, Jimmy Carter, Bill Cliton, M.Half bright and company. Our fight against Terrorism is the first priority nothing else matters if we don't win. The Dems. will destory this Country. The Dems have been fighting missle defence since Regean. I guess we will have to wait til North Korea hits a target in the U.S.

Ohio Politics
Mike DeWine -v- Sherrod Brown
What differentiates these two lifelong members of politics and political families is abortion.
DeWine is a moron with the convictions of a typical lawyer turned 'law-maker' member of the hand-picked two-party system.
Sherrod Brown is no different other than being a Socialist.
Bob Taft: imbecile/boob
The Ohio GOP is getting exactly what they deserve. Playing favorites for the last sixteen years by asking Taft to back off Voinovich, then Blackwell asked to back off Taft, etc, etc.

Of course, electing Dems in OHIO will only speed up the inevitable crash and burn of what's left of the OH economy. Replacing corruption with corruption won't solve anything. (wake up voters) Replacing a tax and spend GOP majority won't be any different from tax and spend D majority. So-'BRING IT ON!'

I do see Blackwell's candidacy as tragic. He probably could have defeated Taft eight years ago, but the movers shakers and string pullers in OH's GOP had already promised Taft (daft) his shot at Governor for not challenging Voinovich 16 years ago. Instead, accepting the Secy of State. Then they did the same thing to Blackwell and now that all the favorite sons have had their chance to play in the Governors mansion look at the mess they left.

I say, "GOOD RIDDANCE!"
This two-party system has got to go. Nothing will change if we keep voting for the same hand-picked idiots who happen to be members of the political class system. WAKE UP!

bored to tears with his feras
do we need a repeat,of the global elite.I have not burned down the jungle out side my back door. nor built a dam across three gorges, nor flown my plane to China to complain . what a pain.

I agree with the column's title!
